Registration for the City of Aventura’s Youth Sports 2018-19 Season opens on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Children are offered the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational seasonal sports leagues including soccer tots for ages 2-5 and basketball, girls’ soccer and boys’ soccer for ages 5-15. After-school sports programs are also available and are scheduled with a convenient time slot right after the child’s regular school day ends. Afterschool soccer is available to children in grades K-3,

after-school basketball is available to children in grades K-8, and afterschool tennis is available for ages 6-14.

Aventura’s Fall Adult Softball Opens in September The City of Aventura’s Adult Softball fall season starts on Sunday, September 9, 2018 and runs through Sunday, December 16, 2018. Adults can get in on the sports by joining a softball league. Registration is now open! The registration fee is $600 per team. A discounted fee of $540 is available for teams where all of the team members are Aventura residents. All teams must register in person only at the Community Recreation Center, Founders Park, or Waterways Park.

If you are interested here is some helpful information: Find the right glove. When you’re playing defense, you’ll wear a leather

glove on your non-throwing hand to help you catch thrown or batted balls. If you purchase a new glove, you will want to “break it in” by removing the stiffness of the new leather. There are several methods of doing this, leaving it in the sun with special oil applied, or playing a lot of catch with it.

Get a pair of cleated shoes. Cleats are used in several sports and give you better traction while running after a ball or between bases. For softball, rubber or plastic cleats are appropriate. Metal cleats are typically banned in softball leagues, as they pose a danger to sliding runners and infielders who try to tag them.

Look for additional, optional gear.

These include batting gloves, which cushion the hands, protect against blisters, and improve bat grip. Some players who frequently slide into bases choose to wear sliding pads.

If you don’t know you have a bad habit, obviously you have no motivation to break it. But it is the mysterious habits that we do subconsciously – or almost subconsciously – that can do the most damage to our lives.

“Sometimes bad habits can veer into addiction territory,” says John Collopy, author of the book The Reward of Knowing (www.john collopy.com), “The most dangerous bad habits are the ones we don’t realize we have.”

Collopy is a successful real estate broker today who is the owner of 38 real estate offices in Minnesota and Wisconsin. But it was not an overnight success.

He had a long uphill battle against demons he didn’t know he had. He thought he had moved past his troubled childhood with a dysfunctional family and abusive father. But when he became an adult, he quickly became dependent on alcohol to get through the day, and he also had anger management issues.

“Pinpointing bad habits is not as easy as diagnosing a drug or alcohol addiction,” says Collopy.

“Honing in on why we think the way we do, and

why we do the things we do – that takes some deep reflection that many people won’t take the time to do.”

He says that it was only after he dived deep into his own soul that he realized he had subconscious bad habits and he needed to break the cycle. He says he makes a conscious effort each day to make choices that align with his personal life goals.

He offers these suggestions for those who may be struggling to understand why they continually seem to make the wrong decisions. Start with identifying where you are stuck.

The first step is identifying the exact moment you realized you were doing something that you knew you didn’t really want to do. Find the trigger. As soon as you have located the exact moment you went off the rails, try to find out what triggered your behavior that you want to change.

Ask yourself: is this behavior moving me towards my life’s goals? By keeping your ultimate goals in mind, it will make it easier to take the smaller steps needed to obtain those goals.

Don’t let bad habits cause you to have a

mediocre life. Sometimes bad habits are not as serious as alcohol or drugs, but nonetheless they wear you down so you are not as productive and happy as you could be. Don’t allow bad habits to make your life less fulfilling than it should be Ask for help. If it is a small habit you are trying to break, just telling friends about it can help you internalize the need for change. If it is a big problem, don’t be afraid to seek professional help.

“Our habits – good or bad – determine if we reach most of the goals in our lives,” Collopy says.

“What I’ve learned is that you have to identify the underlying cause of the bad habits before you can break them.”

“The National Football League succumbed to pressure, made historic admissions and then took steps to compensate former players and reduce head-injury risk for current players.”

Thompson outlines four major phases of the scandal: Dr. Omalu’s discovery.

In late 2002, while the DJIA was in the midst of a 38% decline, Dr. Bennett Omalu discovered that former NFL player Mike Webster suffered from an incurable neurological disease linked to repeated head trauma called

chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Omalu and his colleagues issued the first scholarly report on CTE on American football players in the journal Neurosurgery. The NFL asked Neurosurgery for a retraction, but the journal declined.

“Meanwhile, evidence for a link between football and CTE continued to mount,” Thompson says.

The Dow and faith in football fall.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 54 percent of its value over a 15-month period in the financial crisis. “With mood reaching a negative extreme, researchers in late January 2009 announced more CTE findings in former NFL players,” Thompson says.

The NFL continued a defiant tone, but the pressure for change was growing.

The NFL acts. In December 2009, the NFL conceded publicly that concussions can lead to long-term brain problems.

Over the next few years, it settled a massive lawsuit brought by thousands of former players, began rule changes to discourage hits to the head, and announced a new sideline concussion assessment protocol. “From 2010-15 as mood trended positively, the NFL became more conciliatory toward former and current players,” Thompson says.

Market correction and more NFL unrest. Stocks headed down in late 2015 and so did the NFL’s image.

“If social mood trends negatively, it will likely expose football to more scandalous revelations,” Thompson says.

Engler, who has a background in psychology, counseling and research, says “We take time to go through our clothes closets and toss out what is outdated or no longer fits—but do we do that with our emotions?

Clearing out your emotional closet will likely improve all aspects of your life. But more importantly, it’ll offer you the opportunity to discover your present self, which is frequently lost in the shadowy maze of your past self’s memories and experiences”. In her work as an intuitive/life-coach, Engler says she sees encouraging success with her simple 3step technique, which she designed to bring change through mere mindfulness and common sense. She says, “It’s a matter of being conscious of the critical difference between who you’ve been and who you are now. Without the extra baggage of outdated beliefs, you can move more easily through the open door of who you want to be, who you were meant to be. This technique is easy. It’s like shampooing your psyche—wash, rinse, repeat.”

The 3 steps are as follows: Step 1) The Self Quiz Write down on separate

slips of paper the emotional issues you’d like to overcome, particularly targeting experiences you feel have damaged you. Note when it first began and the undesirable conditions that developed as a result.

Lay out all the slips on a table with a wastebasket nearby. Read one issue at a time, and then ask yourself these questions: “Does this past experience have anything to do with the person I am now? Does it truly still bother me? Is it possible I overcame this long ago, or do I need to keep carrying it with me?

Am I okay right now and going forward?”

Chances are strong that you will answer: “I’m not that person anymore. I’ve already gotten over that, and I see now that it’s not worth holding onto.” At this point, you joyfully wad up that outdated version of yourself, shoot it into the wastebasket and go to the next paper and repeat the process until the table is clear. It’s then that you realize that you need to update your emotional operating system at least as often your phone’s! It’s a simple matter of mindfulness. By asking yourself the right questions, you can proactively change the course of your life through the, sometimes eyeopening, answers you get.

This brings us to the next step.

Step 2) Create Your F.A.T.E. – Engler says, “In order to effect true change in your life, I suggest using the quantum law of attraction. In The Pearls of Wisdom, the angel’s note says, ‘When spirit joins with heart, mind, and body—as One and of One—only then shall you truly see that ALL things are a possibility.’ It’s easiest to remember this magical secret by using the

acronym ‘F.A.T.E.’ To manifest whatever you desire in your life, the simple key is to align your Feelings, Actions, and Thoughts to create your desired Experience. To put it even simpler, if you can pretend to the extent that every part of you believes that your wish has already happened, then the quantum field of manifestation will match that state and make it so. Ultimately, the universe cannot decide things for you, it can only give you more of what you already believe to be true.

So, choose your feelings, thoughts, and actions consciously—and by law of the Universe—it will appear like Magic!”

Moving on, after you have become conscious of your current feelings and decluttered your emotional closet; and after you’ve become mindful of what you truly want in your life and understand how to “create your fate”, you are then ready for your final step.

Step 3) Forgiveness and Gratitude – Forgive yourself and others for all harm and damage and never look back. Engler says, “When you look back, you re-engage your past self and abandon your freshly de-cluttered present self… To anchor your positive life changes, you must try to stay in gratitude by focusing upon that which is good about yourself, about others, and about your life overall. Like attracts like. Whatever you project is what the Universe will assume you have chosen for yourself, and it will give you more of the same. So stay mindful of who you are and the choices you make, and you’ll give both the Universe and yourself something to smile about!”

We watch it on TV with great interest.

Those who have talent attempt to impress judges and viewers in an effort to live a dream and become a star.

While everyone wants to jump into the spotlight with their many talents, it is a reality that very few reach a place where only the most gifted reside.

Last year, Amy Rosen and her lifelong friend, Cathy Morrison auditioned for the annual Aventura Star talent competition.

While both fell short in an attempt to win this event, fun was had and lessons were learned. Both are thinking about coming back this year - as the event is now holding open auditions for the competition in October at the Community Recreation Center located at 3375 NE 188 Street.

“We had a great time, and while we never knew what to expect, I think the lessons that we learned were valuable if we decide to do it this year,” Rosen said.

“When we were younger, both of us danced and even performed, so we felt that it would be natural for us to do it again. There were some very talented people who auditioned.”

From the brightest magicians, acro-

bats, dancers, actors, musicians, and singers - of all ages - this competition is one that many have been anticipating - to audition as an individual or in a group of no more than five.

“I watched many of the performers last year,” April Castillo said. “We have a very talented community here in Aventura. I was blown away by some of the voices that people had - and they weren’t just adults. Some kids who showed up last year had so much talent.”

With the Aventura Star finals being held on Sunday, November 11 as part of the the City’s 23rd Annual Founders Day celebration, auditions are scheduled on the following dates and times at the Community Recreation Center located at 3375 NE 188 Street: Saturday, Oct. 13 - (noon-2:00 p.m.)

Sunday, Oct. 14 - (noon-2:00 p.m.)

Tuesday, Oct. 23 - (5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.)

Wednesday, Oct. 24 - (5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.)

Obviously, each contestant (individual or group member) must be an Aventura

resident and is required to complete an application form which is available online at cityofaventura.com; all members of a group act must place their group name on each form. Participants 18 years of age or older must sign a City of Aventura adult waiver form. Participants that are under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the City of Aventura minor waiver form. In addition, a parent or legal guardian must be present at the time of the audition.

A sound technician is available the day of finals. Participants must have already provided CDs (with a backup on hand), marked with name, track number and any stage directions on the day of audition.

Performances are limited to three minutes. The finals will be live and lip-syncing is not permitted. Finalists will be contacted by phone number that is listed on the application no later than Friday, October 26, 2018.

First place winners will receive a $65 gift certificate to the Aventura Mall.

Second place winners will receive a $35 gift certificate to the Aventura Mall. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

A Counselor’s Guide: 10 Tips for a Smooth High School Experience

By Harriet Levy - As a former high school guidance counselor, I used to spend most of my day listening. I encouraged students to talk. Feeling stressed, they said, was their automatic response to demanding teachers, parents’ high expectations, and the drama of shifting friendship alliances.

Daily dilemmas and problems affect everyone: the terrified boy who just heard rumors he was going to be jumped after school, the teary-eyed girl whose teacher embarrassed her in front of the class, the endless “he said-she said” conflicts, the bewildering symptoms of panic attacks, the anxiety of constant testing and fears of not measuring up, the distress of being harassed or bullied, the complications

of two separate homes.

One after the other -the cutters who want to stop the pain, the abused who suddenly wear clothes that reveal their bruises, the pregnant girls filled with remorse and indecision, the depressed who write suicidal intentions in their English essays, the bulimics who can’t resist their compulsion.

For many teenagers, high school is the worst time in their lives. In a huge school of 3,000 or more students, it’s easy to feel lost in a sea of bodies and faces, all seemingly bigger, smarter and more attractive. Everything is intensified, including loneliness and depression.

But it is possible to get through happily and successfully. Based on four decades of observation

and intervention, following are my top 10 suggestions for a smooth (less bumpy, anyway) high school experience.

1. Make a connection.

Joining a club or sport (or both) is the best way to feel included and involved.

A strong support group of even a few good friends defeats alienation.

2. Communication is the best problem solver. Talking it out clears up confusion, uncertainty and misunderstandings. Find a mediator, if necessary. (Parents are not good mediators -they are not objective.)

3. Accept the fact that life is not fair. There will always be those who have more and look better.

The earlier this concept is understood, the easier to ward off jealousy and envy.

Repeat 100 times, “I might not have everything I want, but I have everything I need.”

4.

Attitude is everything. Rudeness, disrespect, defiance, and temper tantrums might feel good at the moment, but will only cause hostile reactions. Polite behavior will bring favorable results.

Practice eye contact and a

firm handshake.

Apologize when necessary.

5.

Observe people who appear confident and self-assured.

Imitating their mannerisms, gestures, posture, and tone of voice will assist in overcoming a shy and timid nature.

6. Hating a teacher is not a good reason to fail a class. Refusing to complete assignments or follow directions will not punish the teacher. It’s a huge leap in maturity to finally understand that learning is possible even if the teacher is unlikable.

7. Drop the phrase, “I’ve never been good at ...” tests, math, spelling, whatever.

Using these words repeatedly makes it true, limiting any possibility of future achievement. Listen for negative self-talk and immediately substitute a realistic positive comment.

8. A broken heart will mend eventually.

Experience is the only way to learn that recovery after a breakup is indeed possible. The intensity of first love is very strong; do not even attempt to remain “good friends” until you can see the other person

without a stomach lurch.

9. Suicide is not the answer. Understand that life won’t always seem so awful, that troubles today might look and feel less overwhelming tomorrow.

Even though they can’t fix all problems, there are many adults at school who will listen with compassion and empathy.

10. Just do it! Laziness is not a permanent condition like height or eye color.

Success means doing whatever has to be done, when it has to be done, whether you feel like it or not.

Bonus tip: Practice deep breathing. (Check Google for proper technique.) Mastering this skill

will enable you to fall back to sleep, ease tension before a test, and relax during moments of anxiety.

The energy of the high school environment is exciting and stimulating.

But watch out -- that energy can turn positive or negative in an instant.

Always be aware of your direction, and pay attention to your own life lessons.

6 simple tips to prevent a fall (BPT) - Overwhelmingly, people say that they want to stay independent and in their own home as they age. One way to ensure they can is to learn about fall risks and make changes to reduce their chances of falling. Because, while one in four older adults falls each year, there are ways to be prepared for the changes of aging in order to prevent falls.

“The misconception is that falls are a normal part of aging, but this is untrue,” says Kathleen Cameron, senior director at the National Council on Aging’s Center for Healthy Aging. “Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you’ll inevitably fall at some point. There are proven ways to prevent falls, so older adults can live healthy, safely and independently.”

Every 11 seconds an older adult is seen in an emergency room for a fall-related

Is There A Path To End The Autism Epidemic?

New published science and the screening of atrisk children before they receive any vaccines may provide a middle ground between the “all or nothing” positions of the two warring sides of the vaccine-autism debate, according to one of the leading critics of the government’s current vaccination program.

On one side of the debate are parents who believe that today’s high number of mandatory vaccinations (children in the 1960s received three vaccinations, today’s children receive 38) can cause

autism in vulnerable children. On the other side are government health officials who deny any a link.

However, critics claim the government is being influenced by pharmaceutical companies whose revenues from vaccines exploded from $170 million in the early 1980s to more than $60 billion today. A study published in 2013 in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation concluded that the pharmaceutical industry “masterfully influences evidence base production” and also “exerts direct influences

on professional decisions and health consumers.”

“There is a wealth of relevant scientific studies that prove that autism prevalence has skyrocketed in the United States,” says J.B. causes of autism.”

Handley says those discoveries, published in peer-reviewed journals, include the work of such respected researchers as Dr. Carlos PardoVillamizar, a neurologist at Johns Hopkins; Dr. Christopher Exley, a professor of bioinorganic chemistry at Keele University in England, and the late Dr. Paul Patterson, a professor of biological sciences at the California Institute of Technology.

“Because of this new, published science,” Handley says, “we now know that autism is created by immune activation events in the brain during critical phases of brain development, typically by the time a child is 36months-old, and that these immune activation events in the brain can be triggered by the aluminum adjuvant in vaccines.

While the first of these discoveries occurred in 2004, the critical missing pieces have only fallen into place since 2010.”

All the while, the autism rate has exploded.

The Center for Disease

Control and Prevention noted that the rates for autism in children went from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 36 children in 2017.

Handley says returning to the vaccine schedule used in the mid-1980s provides a moderate solution.

He also believes that there should be thorough screening before any vaccines are given to determine which children are at-risk from serious vaccine injury.

“We have the capacity to systematically assess the children who are more vulnerable before they receive a vaccine,” Handley says. “These children are at risk and it is the duty of our public health program to protect them.”

Handley believes these are some of the steps that should be taken: Removing vaccine safety from the Centers for Disease Control. Having the same agency that is in charge of promoting vaccinations also in charge of vaccine safety is an inherent conflict, he says.
