CITY NEWS Aventura’s charter school promotes diversity, high achievers By Lisa Overing - Aventura Digest
It’s no wonder that parents of Aventura’s teenagers are clamoring for their own high school, a continuance of the excellence experience received at ACES, the charter school for Aventura. When graduating from eighth grade at ACES, just about any other school could be viewed as a step down from the educational standards and socialization opportunities achieved at ACES. The Aventura City of Excellence School is ranked second among all Florida K-8 schools participating in the FCAT exams, moving up from a fifth place finish last year. Established in 2003, ACES has its eye set on being number one, in spite of scoring issues and an already geeky high performance score that’s difficult to improve
upon. “Our mission is not only academic excellence,” says Julie Alm, principal of ACES. “It’s not just the FCAT scores. Our program is about social responsibility and reaching the whole child, to be happy as an individual.” After exhilarating mental challenges in the classroom that consistently garner top honors in district math and science competitions, school partnerships with organizations like the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and The City of Aventura’s Community and Recreation Center provide students with the amenities like professional lighting, production crews and top notch athletic equipment to excel in nearly any nonacademic aspiration. School talent shows in
Aventura are akin to a real offBroadway performance. The school already has its own version of American Idol. Kids stay grounded with other, less glamorous special interest clubs and the hands-on science curriculum that includes a fully organic garden managed by the student body. Alm hopes to add baseball to the school’s lineup which currently offers volleyball, basketball, football, and soccer. With 984 students comprised predominantly of Aventura residents, the school admitted 108 new children into kindergarten. Alm says that the annual electronic lottery following open enrollment leaves 1,300 students on the waitlist for ACES. Most graduates of ACES continue to high school at Dr.
Michael M. Krop and the new Alonzo and Tracy Mourning High School, with some attending private schools including University School, American Heritage, and Pinecrest. “Interestingly, last year was the first year of seniors at Krop who came from ACES,” Alm says. “In turns out that Krop’s top students were from ACES.” With a small, average class size of 22 students in grades four through eight, ACES has a low student teacher ratio and a relaxing atmosphere with many classrooms offering a waterfront
view. The school has a full-time, certified police officer provided by the City of Aventura to promote a safe environment and parents are contractually required to volunteer 20 hours annually to school pursuits. The school comprises the diversity of Aventura’s population, but Alm says that ACES children all look the same in their uniforms, until they speak, that is. “When they talk, you hear 18 languages spoken among the student population,” says Alm. “The majority of our students are bilingual.”

I was concerned watching Hurricane Isaac cross Florida. His wide, outer bands circled my Aventura condo while we battened down the hatches for his impending visit to my home in Mississippi. With two waterfront properties, the serenity of that lifestyle choice is counter-
The sky becomes a formidable purple and black hue during broad daylight. The tide that calmly rocks us daily becomes a violent, nonending churn with relentless rain that seems Biblical in its intensity. To me, it feels like the embodiment of the wrath of God. The rain lasts forever, pelting post-Andrew windows that you pray will not shatter or allow water intrusion. This symphony of storm commotion and low pressure lasts for hours with thunderstorms and lightning. And in the updraft of the thunderstorm, a tornado is born. If you’re in a skyrise condo, about the worst sound you can ever hope to hear, aside from the incessant pounding of rain booming on the glass during the hurricane, is the shrill, sudden beeping of the weather channel. It’s code for some weath-
erman thinking there is a bull’s eye on your condo. You refugee to the hallway with a cell phone and pillow. And wait. My friends, Liz and Mindy Bloom, had frazzled nerves in their tower suite on the 28th floor of Hidden Bay during Isaac. They thought the storm was long gone over the Keys, but torrents of water kept falling. The ocean was a black, churning fright. One night, they got a text alert to take cover immediately during a tornado warning and waited in the hall for 15 minutes until it dissipated. “On Saturday, at 3:23 AM to be exact, I was awoken from a deep sleep by a wall of water hitting my window,” says Liz Bloom. “It was raining so hard that I thought the hurricane hit dead on, but those were just the outer bands. It was really scary stuff.” The Bloom sisters rode out the hurricane, but some people evacuated. It’s a damned if you do or don’t dilemma. You think you’re an idiot to stay and an idiot to leave, sitting in the exodus of traffic on the Turnpike when nothing may happen except a lot of rain. So, here I sit, on August 28, watching the bayou rise over the dock in our backyard, hoping that Isaac’s twisted eye becomes disorganized enough to just have it rain like hell and scatter a few branches. Isaac needs to keep moving. I have a flight out in two days. I’m headed back to paradise, to Aventura, to check on my condo and put the furniture back on the balcony…that is until Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, or Michael stare at Florida and the Gulf of Mexico again, with their evil eye.

acted with stress every hurricane season. Hurricane preparations create emotional anxiety and cash hemorrhage. My husband got our generator going as I updated our insurance coverage and shopped for supplies. Beyond flashlights, candles, batteries, nonperishables and three trips to Lowe’s, we bought 125 bottles of water, 24 bottles of Heineken Light, three bottles of Louis Jadot Beaujolais, and one fifth of Crown Royal. Last count, the Isaac due diligence splurge was up to $900. Ouch. Worrying about the next hurricane is the price we pay for living in paradise. Aventura’s luxury condos offer the most spectacular views in South Florida. Serenely private and secure, many complexes are soaring glass towers, testaments to modern architecture on acres of landscaped grounds surrounded on two sides by water. Jazz vocalist Paulette Dozier, will give audiences the chance to relive an evening with singer Billy Holiday in “Lady Day, at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,” as an up-close reminder of what the real-life effects, in the spotlight, will do to someone like Billy Holiday, one of the most well known performers in music. Born Eleanora Fagan, Billy Holiday was a true artist during her time and
rose as a social phenomenon during the 1950’s. Her soulful unique singing voice and her ability to turn any song she came in contact with into her own style of music, made her the superstar she became. Today, Holiday is remembered for the masterpieces she created, and her ability to live the words she sang. Although she never went through any technical training or even so much as learning how to read music, she
quickly became known as one of the most active and vibrant jazz singers in the country. Holiday’s career received a big boost when she recorded “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” and “Miss Brown to You,” which eventually became an important part of American jazz. Paulette Dozier does a great job as Holiday, singing the hits with the same depth and emotional vibrancy that Billy herself would do. She
doesn’t try to imitate the star, but takes on the role with somewhat of likeness. Paulette gives the perfect performance at the old Byron Carlyle Theatre, now The Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre. As a senior at a Chicago high school, she enrolled in the Navigate to Nursing (N2N) scholarship program, a dual enrollment program offered through Chamberlain College of Nursing. The program allowed Trevino to better understand the demands of college courses while contemplating her own future career. The hands-on experience helped her develop key skills she may need if she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, such as the ability to complete assignments in a timely and organized way and a comfort level interacting with faculty and students in online discussion boards. Chamberlain’s N2N scholarship program provides up to $8,500 in assistance for tuition to allow qualified high school seniors to begin earning college credit – online and on-site – toward a BSN while in high school. Trevino completed one course on campus and one course online through the program while completing her second semester of her senior year in high school. Eligible students must have a minimum high school cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and submit a let-
tion. Though this news is concerning for healthcare providers, it has ripened the employment market for incoming graduates. While many industries are decreasing the size of their workforce, nursing is growing twice as fast as the general economy. A March 2012 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report projects 1.2 million job openings for nurses by 2020. Similarly, a 2011 report from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing indicates the average job offer rate for BSN program graduates at the time of graduation is 56 percent, compared to 24.4 percent for all new college graduates. Today, Rachel Trevino is enrolled in the three-year BSN degree program at Chamberlain in Chicago. She has narrowed her focus in nursing to labor and delivery. “Chamberlain’s Navigate to Nursing scholarship program helped me transition from high school to college level courses and assignments,” Trevino says. “I always intended to pursue nursing as a career, but getting a head start in high school eased my nerves about attending college and gave me the confidence to be an active participant in a more advanced college environment.” Whether they are tailored to nursing or other growing industries, dual enrollment programs help students prepare for college success and a future supporting the nation’s workforce. It may be in Your DNA: Restless Legs Syndrome (ARA) - Around the dinner table, some families may talk about their urges to move around their “shaky legs” (a feeling usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant leg sensations), while others commiserate about their “creepy-crawly” sensations or their uncontrollable urge to move their legs, which could relieve discomfort. Regardless of the family nickname, they could be discussing Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), a neurological condition known to run in families. Studies have now identified some of the genetic markers of RLS and RLS is often found in families where the onset of symptoms is before age 40. One study showed that close family members of patients with RLS like siblings or parents have a significantly higher risk for RLS (77%). While RLS occurs in both men and women, the incidence is about twice as high in women.
Primary RLS is a long-term neurological condition characterized by an urge to move the legs, associated with or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations. Security number,” Junker says. “Learning how to use the Internet safely is also important to protecting your identity. Social networking, online banking and other online conveniences also open consumers to risks of identity theft. There are also products that consumers can purchase, after researching them, to help monitor their identity.”

Here’s how to begin. General maintenance guidelines All hardwood floors should be cleaned regularly to remove dirt and grit from between the floor boards. Avoid using a wet mop which can dull the finish. Instead, sweep with either a dust mop or broom that features exploded tips, or vacuum the floors using a vacuum with special hardwood floor attachments or one with the beater bar turned off. Wipe up any spills immediately, using a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, starting at the edges of the spill and working toward the center. Allowing spills to remain on hardwood floors could damage the finish, as well as the wood.

Avoid walking on hardwood floors with sports cleats or high heel shoes in disrepair. These can scratch the finish, or even dent the floor. Placing felt pads on the bottom of furniture legs will also minimize scratches. Further minimize scratches by placing scatter rugs at all entrances to help keep small stones and debris out. But choose wisely. Scatter rugs with rubber backs can discolor wood floors. Special rug mats can be purchased from a wood flooring retailer to protect the floors from discoloration. You’re not “finished” just yet Knowing which type of finish applied to protect the hardwood floor is important. Different flooring finishes require different kinds of care, so if or when in doubt, contact the flooring manufacturer or a wood flooring professional in your area. There are three major types of wood flooring finishes available - surface finishes, wax and acrylic impregnated - and the experts at the National Wood Flooring Association, www.wood floors.org, stress that using the right maintenance products will protect and prolong the life of the floor. Surface finishes, also referred to as urethanes or polyurethanes, are practical and very popular. They remain on the surface of the wood and form a protective coating that is water-resistant, durable and requires minimal maintenance. For cleaning purposes, use products recommended by the flooring manufacturer. If the floors were finished or refinished on site, contact the installer. If neither is
known, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner which can be purchased at a retail flooring store. Never use wax-based or petroleum-based products on a surface finish floor, as they will damage the finish. Wax finishes soak into the wood, harden to form a protective penetrating seal, and when needed, are maintained with additional thin applications of wax. Only solvent-based waxes, buffing pastes or cleaning liquids made specifically for wax-finished wood floors should be used. Use cleaning products, available at retail flooring stores, made specifically for wax finishes. Follow the directions carefully to determine how long the cleaner should remain on the floor. Once the floor is clean, apply a new coat of wax to restore luster. Acrylic impregnated finishes are injected into the wood to create a super-hard, extremely durable floor. These finishes most often are used in high traffic areas of malls, restaurants and other commercial settings. Cleaning an acrylic impregnated floor depends on the finish. If the floor has a urethanebased finish, follow the same procedures suggested for surface finished floors. If the floor has a nonurethane-based finish, use a spray and buff system, as recommended by the manufacturer. Don’t hesitate to investigate It pays to be knowledgeable. Proper care and maintenance will protect and prolong the performance of hardwood flooring for a lifetime, and even longer.
