No matter what your answer is, you simply do not have a choice anymore - and it is frustrating many who felt they were prepared for just about anything. As we go about our lives, just living to survive the next day, there are many - especially this time of year - with the population tripled because of the many tourists - that are ready to make your life a “living hell.” Claudine Morales found that out first hand when she and her husband were looking for health insurance and came across a card they picked up while at the local supermarket. “It said that it was low

cost, Obamacare and everything that made sense to us,” Morales recalled. “When I spoke to the gentleman, I told him that it was easier (and safer) for us to meet him at a restaurant. The meeting was great and he pointed out all the posi-

tives of this policy he had.” After the first meeting, the “insurance agent” asked for another meeting and to bring a cashiers check if Morales wanted to start coverage immediately. At first she and her husband were

hesitant - wanting more of a paper trail (check, credit card), but also wanted to be covered immediately. “I should have known something was up when he asked if we could meet outside the restaurant because he had several appointments that day,” she

explained. “When I handed him the check, he told us that his business is going so well, they ran out of printed receipts, but he had my home address and would send it right away when he got back to the office.” That was the last time

Morales saw this agent, who said his name was Chris. Her check was gone and so was he. Even the phone number that she contacted him on - was not working. Morales is certainly not

Scams target people of all backgrounds, ages and income levels across this country. There's no one group of people who are more likely to become a victim of a scam, all of us may be vulnerable to a scam at some time. Scams succeed because they look like the real thing and catch you off guard when you’re not expecting it. Scammers are getting smarter and taking advantage of new technology, new products or services and major events to create believable stories that will convince you to give them your money or personal details.

DON’T BE AN EASY TARGET If you've only ever met someone online or are unsure of the legitimacy of a business, take some time to do a bit more research. Do a Google image search on photos or search the internet for others who may have had dealings with them. If a message or email comes from a friend and it seems unusual or out of

character for them, contact your friend directly to check that it was really them that sent it. Keep your mobile devices and computers secure. Always use password protection, don’t share access with others (including remotely), update security software and back up content. Protect your WiFi network with a password and avoid using public computers or WiFi hotspots to access online banking or provide personal information. Choose your passwords carefully. Choose passwords that would be difficult for others to guess and update them regularly. A strong password should include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Don’t use the same password for every account/profile, and don’t share your passwords with anyone. For those, like Emily Watkins of Dania Beach, who is not an internet user, there are street/home scams that will come face-to-face with you like Morales. She and her boyfriend are seniors who are on a fixed income and know that they have to be careful. “We had someone call us on the phone and said they have an arrest warrant for me - and started to tell me that if we didn’t surrender our bank account numbers and credit cards to them, I would be picked up and arrested,” Watkins said. “I hung up and called BSO who told me that these scams exist and do not

give out any information to anyone over the phone.” From Dating Scams to Employment Scams, Fake Checks, Loan Scams, Lottery Scams, Pet Scams and the popular Property Rental Scams, there is a lot to worry about. Scammers use authentic property rental websites and online classifieds such as Craigslist to advertise rental properties, which they do not own, for a significantly discounted rate. When you contact these scammers, victims are asked to send the money via instant money transfer services such as Western union and MoneyGram. Once the money is collected, the scammers disappear. In order to minimize your chances of becoming a victim of a rental scam, it is recommended to pay for a vacation property with a check or credit card only. From an area like south Florida that has watched enough disaster relief scams, you would think we would all be prepared. But in reality, there is no way that will happen. Too many bad people out there with bad intentions. Be as careful as you can!

Celebrating our Active Hallandale Beach Community

By Mayor Joy Adams Hallandale Beach is made up of so many impressive people! The City Commission had the opportunity to meet and celebrate some of them during last week’s meeting. Six teens from our O.B. Johnson Park Teen Zone program participated in the Fitbit Tropical 5k Marathon last month. Ken McKenzie, a Recreation Leader in our Parks Department, helped the teens train for the race. Nike Miami, Life Time Athletic Events and Bekindr donated entry fees, gift bags, running gear and a post-race breakfast. Thank you! Our athletes also had the opportunity to meet an Olympic runner. We look forward to cheering on our Teen Zone athletes in future races. I’m extremely proud of our Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (HBCRA) staff members. Their programs help to create so many opportunities in our City. The goal of the HBCRA is to enhance quality of life by eliminating and preventing blighted conditions by creating community partnerships, fostering business growth, creating jobs and revitalizing neighborhoods. The HBCRA has a variety of residential programs including, but not limited to, first time home buyer assistance, paint vouchers and storm shutter/impact window rebates. bers of the Planning Committee for the Superbowl 54 taking place next year in 2020. The Big Game expects to bring various tourists and businesses from all over the world. I look forward to having visitors experience South Florida, specially Hallandale Beach, and hopefully generate opportunities for our community. Stay tuned as we plan next year’s big event. Please note that the local Broward County Library, adjacent to City Hall, is having a free book giveaway this Thursday, February 28, at 430PM. The next day, Friends of the Library will be

Finally, I want to take a moment to recognize St. Matthew Catholic Church for its great festival! It provided a great opportunity for members of our community to come together. 8th Annual Environmental Education Forum - Thursday, February 28

Light & Tasty Salads Are A Spring Favorite

While the calendar says the end of February, the weather outside feels a little bit like summer. When planning your meals this time of year, something light is always popular. Tasty chicken, tuna, egg and potato salad will hit the spot. CHICKEN SALAD • 1 1/2 cups chopped cooked chicken • 1/2 cup sliced celery • 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onion • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1/8 teaspoon pepper • 1/3 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish • 2 teaspoons prepared mustard • 2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped

In medium mixing bowl combine first three ingredients. Stir in the lemon juice and pepper. Combine the mayo, pickle relish and prepared mustard. Add this sauce to chicken and gently stir in the eggs. Cover and chill until ready to serve TUNA SALAD • 2 5-ounce cans water-packed tuna fish • 2 to 4 tablespoons mayonnaise • 1 rib celery, diced small • 1 small shallot or 1/4 red onion, diced small • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)

• 1 tablespoon pickle relish, optional • Salt and pepper

Use a can opener to cut open the cans of tuna fish, but leave the lid in place. Holding the cans over the sink or a bowl, press the lid into the tuna fish and tilt the can to drain all the liquid. Remove the lids and transfer the tuna fish to a mixing bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, celery, shallot, lemon juice, pickle relish (if using), a sprinkle of salt, and a few cracks of fresh black pepper to the tuna fish. Stir with a fork to combine, breaking up any large chunks of tuna fish as you go. Add more mayo if you'd like smoother, creamier tuna salad. Taste and add more of any of the ingredients to taste. Use immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to a week. EGG SALAD • 8 hard-boiled eggs, peeled • 1/3 cup mayonnaise • 2 teaspoon whole grain mustard • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice • 1/2 stalk of celery, minced (about 1/3 cup) • 2 tablespoon finely chopped chives • Paprika, for garnish • 1 baguette, quartered • Lettuce • Salt & pepper to taste

Roughly chop hard-boiled eggs and transfer to a medium bowl. Mash with a fork to break up yolks. Add mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, celery and chives and mix until evenly combined. Slice baguette pieces in half lengthwise and divide egg salad between bottom bread halves. Sprinkle egg salad with paprika, then top with lettuce and remaining bread halves.

POTATO SALAD • 2 pounds potatoes (5 to 6 medium), • peeled and cut into 3/4-inch chunks • 1 cup Mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons vinegar • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 cup thinly sliced celery • 1/2 cup chopped onion • 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped (optional)

Cover potatoes with water in 4-quart saucepot; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 10 minutes. Drain and cool slightly. Combine Mayonnaise, vinegar, salt, sugar and pepper in large bowl. Add potatoes, celery, onion and eggs and toss gently. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
