Boulevard south, Moore was met with mid-day traffic that would take her 45 minutes to get to her destination. That is something that you would never expect. Not in this area. Home for Moore is on

the ocean, and getting to that destination is never easy – anytime of year. “I was completely worn out – just coming home,” Moore said. “I was with one of the residents of my building, and we couldn’t believe the traffic. I know

it’s the season, but this is crazy. Forty-five minutes to go a little more than five miles is really crazy!” Packing your patience is fine to say, but the traffic patterns throughout south Florida have made it tougher and tougher to

get around – especially in communities throughout Southeast Broward and Northeast Miami-Dade. For as long as many can remember, traffic has always been a major obstacle during the winter months. Visitors coming

from everywhere to escape the cold weather. But times have changed, and even though the countless hours of planning to keep up with the growth were done with the best in mind, the traffic – at most times in December, January, February and for most of March - is really tough to maneuver. For longtime Hollywood resident Cameron Smith, the idea of getting anywhere in south Florida during peak times is normally tough enough. Miami, Fort Lauderdale and every other suburb in Miami-Dade and Broward is usually a headache in the morning and early evening on the heavily traveled freeway system, but now add in those side streets that are also loaded with visitors, and you have a real mess. “For me, as someone who works in Fort Lauderdale – right off I-95 is good and bad,” Smith pointed out. “Once I get to Oakland Park Boulevard, it may be three blocks, but the traffic sometimes comes to a standstill – the same on the way back, which is worse and really

Celebration, Accomplishment and Unity in Hallandale Beach

The past week, Hallandale Beach was marked by celebration, accomplishment and

unity. I would first like to congratulate Mr. Hubert Jackson for receiving the 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award. Each year, the City’s Human Department Services recognizes an individual or organization that exemplifies the life and legacy of Dr. King within our City. Mr. Jackson was born in Hallandale Beach and has lived in the community for over 70 years. He has served the community for over 58 years as a philanthropist, activist and

City employee. Mr. Jackson was a member of our Public Works team for over 40 years. He is a past President of the local Optimus Club, a worldwide organization dedicated to working with young people. He is also a gifted poet and volunteers with the Parks Department and Police Athletic League as a basketball and football coach. Congratulations and thank you for all that you do, Mr. Jackson. I would also like to extend congratulations

to our City Clerk, Jenorgen Guillen, for earning her Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) certification. The CMC program is designed to enhance the job performance of City Clerks in municipalities of all sizes. To earn the CMC designation, Clerks must take part in extensive educational programs and have relevant municipal experience. It is wonderful to see emerging young professionals moving forward, growing and bringing innovation to our City!

The City’s annual Community Unity Hope for the Holidays event took place on Saturday, December 15 and was a great success! Thank you to our Parks and Police Departments for organizaing such a wonderful event. Hope for the Holidays provides toys and gifts for members of the community who are in need. It also provides a festival environment for all and featured live entertainment, local food vendors and games. It was heart warming to see

the community come together! As we continue the holiday season, I would encourage all to take time to think about those who are less forand undertunate served. City of Hollywood Schedule For Christmas Eve & Christmas

Hollywood - City Hall and Administrative Offices will be open on Monday, December 24th from 7:00 a.m. until noon. In observance of the Christmas holiday, governmental offices will be closed on Tuesday, December 25th.

Garbage and Recycling Services: No garbage and recycling collections will take place on Tuesday, December 25th. Collection services will resume according to the normal operating

Getting The Chance To Make A Big Impact Great Opportunity For Young Artists To Showcase Their Artistic Ability

Hollywood - In celebration of Black History, the City of Hollywood African American Advisory Council is hosting a city-wide Youth Art Contest. This is a great opportunity for budding young artists, kindergarten through twelfth grade, to showcase their artistic ability for a chance to win prizes. History of the Christmas Tree - From where did it originate?

The history of the Christmas tree comes as a shock to many. This famous symbolism of Christmas is displayed in homes in the United States, Europe, and in many countries around the world. There is no evidence that the modern custom of a Christmas tree originated in paganism. The Romans did decorate their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. Late in the Middle Ages, the Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen trees in their homes or outside their doors to show their hope in the forthcoming spring. The modern-day Christmas tree evolved from these early German traditions.

History of the Christmas Tree - How did the tree come to the U.S.A.? The history of the Christmas tree in the United States dates back to the time of George Washington and his defeat of the German Hessians in the year 1776. The Hessians were exuberant because they felt they held a winning hand in the war against George Washington and his troops. The war was during the Christmas season, which for the Germans was a time for food, songs, and decorated trees. In their busy efforts to celebrate the season, they paid little attention to their military duties. Therefore, the German Hessians became easy prey for Mr. Washington. His troops were able to sneak in and defeat the foe who was illprepared for the onslaught.

After the war in 1776, many Germans stayed in the United States, introduced the Christmas tree, and shared their traditions. The size of the tree was limited to 8 feet, and decorations consisted of dolls, as well as sugar items. As the years went by, the United States realized the need for a Christmas tree market. The first supplier, by the name of Mark Carr from the Catskill Mountains in New York, took it upon himself to cut down fir and spruce trees that grew in abundance. The blood is diverted down better and is more competent in the veins. The patient is placed in a compression hose for a few weeks and told to walk as much as possible.

ON THE CUTTING EDGE WITH VENASEAL Venaseal is one of the newest FDA approved methods of closing off varicose veins and getting rid of venous insufficiency. It uses a crazy-glue like cyanoacralate solution to close off damaged veins. The patient has to first have a venous ultrasound to diagnose venous insufficiency. They can resume most normal activities even immediately afterwards. With any vein procedure there are always risks of blood clots and other more rare risks. This procedure is covered by medicare and done in the office in a matter of minutes.

‘HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS’ Golden Isles Tennis Women Host Annual Holiday Celebration For Needy Youngsters For years, the Golden Isles Tennis Women have carried on the tradition of collecting toys at their annual Holiday celebration to benefit our needy youngsters. With this year’s event being held this Saturday from 2-6 PM at Foster Park, “Hope For The Holidays” continues to work with the kids in the Palms Community - even though the funding was cut nearly $50,000 this year. The yearly luncheon has grown - and included community minded people such as longtime residents Phyllis Broccone, Fran Markowitz, Susie Lewis and new Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Adams as well as Police Chief Sonia Quinones. “This is such a great group of people who have stepped up to make this all possible,” said Barbara Southwick, who has been on board from the beginning. “This year's luncheon was hosted by Joy Cooper at her home - and everyone had a outstanding time.” Southwick admits that if it hadn’t been for the hard work of the tennis team, this year would not have been possible. “The City of Hallandale Beach has some very progressive and positive residents,” she explained. “They just do everything behind the scenes and never ask for recognition.”

The Perfect Christmas Dinner

You sit down to Christmas Dinner Tuesday with your family - and you are treated to quite a feast. With all the beverages and appetizers that are associated with this festive gathering - you always want to leave room for the main dish and a side dish that will please every member of your party. This year, a delicious Peppered Rib Roast will be served upon the table and the smiles will not go away. Also, the Perfect Mashed Potatoes to serve up with this mouth-water roast. PEPPERED RIB ROAST • 1/4 cup coarsely ground pepper • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom • 1 beef ribeye roast (5 to 6 pounds) • 1 cup soy sauce • 3/4 cup red wine vinegar • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1-1/2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1/4 cup cold water

Combine the pepper and cardamom; rub over roast. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the soy sauce, vinegar, tomato paste, paprika and garlic powder; add the roast. Seal bag and turn to coat; refrigerate overnight. Drain and discard marinade. Place roast on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Cover and bake at 350° for 2 to 2-3/4 hours or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 145°; medium, 160°; well-done, 170°). Let stand for 20 minutes before carving. Meanwhile, for gravy, pour the pan drippings and loosened brown bits into a saucepan; skim fat. Combine cornstarch and cold water until smooth; gradually stir into the drippings. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve with the roast.

In a large pot, cover potatoes with water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until totally soft, 16 to 18 minutes. Drain and return potatoes to pot. Use a potato masher to mash potatoes until smooth. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt butter and milk until warm. Pour over warm milk-butter mixture and stir until completely combined and creamy. Add sour cream and stir until combined. Season mashed potatoes generously with salt and pepper. Transfer potatoes to a serving bowl and top with remaining two tablespoons butter. Season with more pepper before serving. Merry Christmas!
