John Lennon at 80: One Man Against the Deep State ‘Monster’ By John W. Whitehead
John Lennon, born 80 years ago today on October 9, 1940, was a musical genius and pop cultural icon. He was also a vocal peace protester, anti-war activist and a high-profile example of the lengths to which the Deep State will go to persecute those who dare to challenge its authority. Long before Julian Assange, Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning were being castigated for blowing the whistle on the government’s war crimes and the National Security Agency’s abuse of its surveillance powers, it was Lennon who was being singled out for daring to speak truth to power about the government’s warmongering, his phone calls monitored and data files
illegally collected on his activities and associations. For a while, at least, Lennon became enemy number one in the eyes of the U.S. government. As the New York Times notes, “Critics of today’s domestic surveillance object largely on privacy grounds. They have focused far less on how easily government surveillance can become an instrument for the people in power to try to hold on to power.” Indeed, all of the many complaints we have about government today—surveillance, militarism, corruption, harassment, SWAT team raids, political persecution, spying, overcriminalization, etc., were present in Lennon’s day and formed the basis of his call for social justice, peace and a populist revolution.
For all of these reasons, the U.S. government was obsessed with Lennon, who had learned early on that rock music could serve a political end by proclaiming a radical message. More importantly, Lennon saw that his music could mobilize the public and help to bring about change. Lennon believed in the power of the people. Unfortunately, as Lennon recognized: “The trouble with government as it is, is that it doesn’t represent the people. It controls them.” What Lennon did not know at the time was that government officials had been keeping strict tabs on

the ex-Beatle they referred to as “Mr. Lennon.” Incredibly, the U.S. government, steeped in paranoia, was spying on

Lennon. By March 1971, when his “Power to the People” single was released, it was clear where Lennon stood. Having moved to New York City that same year, Lennon was ready to participate in political activism against the U.S. government, the “monster” that was financing the war in Vietnam. The official U.S. war against Lennon began in earnest in 1972 after rumors surfaced that Lennon planned to embark on a U.S. concert tour that would combine rock music with antiwar organizing and voter registration. Nixon, fearing Lennon’s influence on about 11 million new voters (1972 was the first year that 18-year-olds could vote), had the ex-Beatle served with deportation orders “in an effort to silence him as a voice of the peace movement.” Lennon was the subject of a four-year campaign of surveillance and harassment by the U.S. government (spearheaded by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover), an attempt by President Richard Nixon to have him “neutralized” and
domestic spying can become unmoored from any legitimate law enforcement purpose.” The government’s paranoia, however, was misplaced. Despite the fact that Lennon was not part of any “lunatic” plot to overthrow the government, the government persisted in its efforts to have him deported. Equally determined to resist, Lennon dug in and fought back. Every time he was ordered out of the country, his lawyers delayed the process by filing an appeal. Finally, in 1976, Lennon won the battle to stay in the country when he was granted a green card. Lennon’s time of repose didn’t last long, however. By 1980, he had re-emerged with a new album and plans to become politically active again. The old radical was back and ready to cause trouble. The Deep State has a way of dealing with troublemakers, unfortunately. On Dec. 8, 1980, Mark David Chapman was waiting in the shadows when Lennon returned to his
of the FBI’s moniker for Lennon, called out, “Mr. Lennon!” Lennon turned and was met with a barrage of gunfire as Chapman—dropping into a two-handed combat stance—emptied his .38-caliber pistol and pumped four hollow-point bullets into his back and left arm. John Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. He had finally been “neutralized.” Yet where those who neutralized the likes of John Lennon, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy and others go wrong is in believing that you can murder a movement with a bullet and a madman. While Lennon’s legacy lives on in his words, his music and his efforts to speak truth to power, unfortunately, not much has changed for the better in the world since Lennon walked among us. Peace remains out of reach. Activism and whistleblowers continue to be prosecuted for challenging the government’s author-

2021 Broadway Concert Series The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s 10th Anniversary Season
OCTOBER 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10
The Aventura Arts & Culture Center continues to prepare a reopening plan which outlines new procedures and protocols which they will follow. The plan has been developed in accordance with CDC guidelines and in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. While the theater remains closed, they continue to look at all aspects of the customer experience with the goal of providing the best possible experience within the new guidelines that will include physical distancing, required masks or facial coverings, extensive cleaning and sanitizing. The health and wellbeing of their guests, staff, volunteers, artists, cast and crew remains their top priority. While the theater lights remain dimmed due to the impact of COVID-19, the Cultural Center wanted to provide an update as they look to the future. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center continues to follow the guidances of local and state officials and remains prepared to respond and adapt to evolving directives. At this time, they do not know when the theater will be permitted to open, but they are preparing for a variety of scenarios based on the evolving science and guidance of health professionals. The practical considerations of the performing arts industry are uniquely challenging. National tours are not able to rehearse or make plans to go out ‘on the road’ and physical distancing requirements limit seating capacity in ways that make it difficult to viably open the theaters. These realities have created challenges for the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and their peers. While the community may be starting to reopen, it’s clear that theater venues will be among the last facilities to reopen. They
continue to reschedule many of the concerts and events they had slated for the summer and the fall. With all that, The Aventura Arts & Culture Center still looks toward the the future and are proud to announce their 2021 concert series. 2021 Aventura Broadway Concert Series: The Stars of Broadway Broadway’s brightest stars are coming to celebrate the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s 10th Anniversary Season as part of the 2021 Broadway Concert Series. When she performs “live” in concert, it is amazing to experience the ease with which she moves back and forth from one genre to another, as if she were gifted with the vocal ability to perform each genre as well as all the others. She has performed for sold-out crowds in venues across the country and throughout Europe. 2021 Medicare Open Enrollment in a Virtual World Tips for Navigating Plan Options During the COVID-19 Pandemic By Betty Assapimonwait
The annual Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plan open enrollment period is traditionally a time for educational events, classes and one-on-one meetings, but this year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there are some new and different ways to learn about Medicare. October 15th to December 7th is the time when millions of people eligible for Medicare can access the latest information about available health plans for 2021. In Florida alone, nearly 2,378,854 people are enrolled in Medicare including almost 2,277,335 with Medicare Advantage. There are resources to help you choose the plan that’s right for you without having to leave home, including informational websites, virtual educational events and one-on-one virtual
meetings with sales agents. At the same time, it’s important to safely access Medicare information online while protecting your personal information and avoiding fake offers and other scams. Here are some tips on how to prepare for the Medicare fall open enrollment period: 1. Use an online tool: Go to the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov to compare plans, benefits and an estimated cost for each plan based on an average member. If you are interested in Medicare Part D, which helps cover the cost of prescription medications, you can also enter the names of prescription medications you take to ensure those medications are covered by the plan you are considering. You
can enroll directly on Medicare.gov. On Medicare.gov, you can also learn about and enroll in Medicare Advantage plans, sometimes called Part C or MA Plans, you can also visit an insurance company’s website to learn more about what they offer. Insurance companies that offer Medicare Advantage plans can provide you with detailed information about their plans and services, plus prescription pricing information and other benefits. You can also check to see if your primary care physician or other providers that are innetwork with the Medicare Advantage plan. 2. Sign up for a virtual education workshop: Many insurance companies are offering online workshops to review the 2021 Medicare
Advantage plan options. Also, check to see if you can set up a virtual one-on-one meeting with an insurance company sales agent – by phone or video chat. Before you attend a virtual event or meeting, find out in advance how to log on to the meeting to avoid technical issues. It’s a good idea to also prepare a list of questions so that you can ensure you get the information you need. Discuss if your doctors accept the plans and that the medications you take are also discussed. Does the plan include vision, hearing and dental coverage? Will Telehealth services be covered? Is transportation to your medical appointments included?
3. Protect yourself against Medicare scams: The federal Medicare agency has warned that scammers may try to use the Pandemic to steal Medicare beneficiaries’ Medicare numbers, banking information or other personal data. Scammers may try to reach out to you by phone, email, text message, social media or by visiting your home. Only give your Medicare number to your doctor, pharmacist, hospital, health insurer or other trusted health care provider. Do not click links in text messages and emails about COVID-19 from unknown sources and hang up on unsolicited phone calls offering COVID19 tests or supplies.
If you are not comfortable accessing plan information online, Medicare.gov has an option for setting up a phone call. For more information, go to: Medicare.gov. Or call: 1-800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227).

Why Is Now The Best Time To Treat Your Varicose Veins?
(L) VenaSeal™ differs from traditional vein treatments in the way it quickly causes occlusion within the vein. Treatments take only 20-30 minutes each. (R) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98 -100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a very thin laser fiber through the affected vein via a needle so there is normally no scar or incision and requires no sutures. By Dr. Susan Fox, DABVLM, D.O., RPVI, FSVM
OCTOBER 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 14
If you are ready to treat your varicose veins, you’re likely tired of their unsightly appearance or, more importantly, want to rid yourself of them for good so that they don’t cause deeper health problems down the line. Why is now the best time to treat your varicose veins or venous insufficiency? Well, with Covid, people are going out less, travelling less, working from home more and more able to wear compression hose and not care about the down time or bruising that though minimal, may interfere with normal life. Life is not normal at the moment and with this slower pace of life, people have more opportunity to take the time to treat themselves. As well, most people have met their deductibles by this point in the year and the vein treatments are often covered by insurance or can be funded through health spending accounts which will be lost if they are not used. Whatever the reason, treating your varicose veins means getting to know the different varicose vein removal procedures at Fox Vein & Laser Experts, South Florida’s best vein removal center. When you’re ready to undergo treatments for vein
removal, it’s likely that you’ve already done your research. You’ve probably looked up the best vein removal treatment centers in south Florida and asked the basics like, “Are laser vein removal treatments effective?” “Wiil they hurt?” “For years now, I’ve come across hundreds of patients who would visit our office feeling apprehensive about their vein removal treatments,” Dr. Susan Fox, owner and founder of Fox Vein & Laser Experts says. “They don’t realize that by treating their veins, they may be opening up their world to a range of benefits and overall improved health.” Providing you relief, both physically and aesthetically, from your varicose veins, has been a passion of ours for as long as we’ve been in business. We know how important feeling and looking good is to your daily routine, which is why we have a multitude of ways to treat your leg veins once and for all. “We want to ensure that no matter your age, skin type, or vascular issues, there is a way for your legs to be restored to good health,” Dr. Susan Fox says. “The reason why we have so many different varicose vein treatments is because there are many different types of veins and we like to be
specific to get you the best results. First, it’s important to know whether the bluish, purplish veins that you see on your legs are in fact, varicose veins. A lot of times, people confuse the more severe varicose veins with the less obvious spider veins that are pretty common as well. Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen or felt through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red and blue vessels that also twist and turn but are tiny. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin, as well but are very small and often fan out in arcs. What most people don’t know, however, is that both spider veins and varicose veins are often connected. Self magazine reports, “Patients who have varicose veins almost always have spider veins, too. However, some people get spider veins and never have a problem with varicose veins.” Whichever the ones you have, both can cause symptoms. Around sixty percent of people with only spider veins have symptoms of burning, aching, itching throbbing or other symptoms. Almost 90 percent of people with varicose veins have symptoms of
swelling, aching, burning, throbbing, skin discoloration or hardening of the skin and even ulcerations on their ankles or legs. Now that we’ve cleared that up (pun intended) let’s take care of those legs! Here are the different varicose vein treatment options available at Fox Vein & Laser Experts: Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98 100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a very thin laser fiber through the affected vein via a needle hole that typically involves no incisions and leaves no scar and requires no sutures. Small pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. During the treatment process, the blood from these veins is redirected to better and more competent veins and the insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. Sounds perfect? Wait, it gets better. These kinds of procedures can be done in just a 30-minute
window of time and there is little to no down time afterwards. In studies, around 50% of people had no pain afterwards and most only described it as a two to four on a scale of 1 to 10. The pain usually is relieved by a little ibuprofen or naproxen for a few days and you can return to most normal activities immediately. Varithena Ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins, foam sclerotherapy is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a medicated solution is injected directly into the affected veins. When injected as a foam rather than a liquid, the solution can target some of the larger, underlying varicose veins that cannot typically be treated with sclerotherapy. The foam irritates the lining of the vessel walls for longer and pushes the blood out of the way, causing them to stick together and close shut, rerouting the blood through healthy veins. While you may feel a sting at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy is not considered a painful technique and is minimally invasive. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct it into the

CITY NEWS person is afraid of needles, laser is an option and we have cutaneous lasers as well, that remove these tiny red veins without much difficulty. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or miniscule red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh which uses microbursts of energy to close shut teeny veins without any down time or scarring. This procedure often seals the tiny veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions often with amazing results.
VARICOSE VEINS? Continued From Pg 14 problematic vein watching everything as we are doing it. The person has no down time, usually no to minimal pain and only needs to stay active and wear compression hose afterwards. VenaSeal This is a great non-surgical approach to removing your varicose veins. VenaSeal™ attempts to treat veins by fostering a clot to form by injecting a crazy gluelike substance into the vein. It causes the vein walls to adhere and seal shut. As long as no one has had an allergic reaction to crazy glue or surgical glues, this is an option for the treatment of veins.
Dr. Susan B. Fox, DO RPVI, FSVM is board certified in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and has been a vein and laser expert for decades. She and her staff are experts in Laser treatments.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy A surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins, ambulatory phlebectomy is an in-office procedure that requires local anesthesic (think lidocaine like at the dentist). The veins are teased out through the small holes without
causing any major scarring or requiring major surgery, which is a significant advancement from the extensive vein stripping procedures of the past. Most often this is done with pinholes that don’t even need to be closed with sutures. Although this procedure
requires small incisions in the skin, most patients return to normal activities immediately afterward without any necessary recovery time. Spider Vein Removal Often, spider vein removal is cosmetic even though they may
cause symptoms. The gold standard is sclerotherapy where a solution is injected into the vein with a teeny-tiny needle and the vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut closing off that tiny vein over several weeks. It often takes several sessions for all of the veins to go away. If a

Acqua Bistro Continues To Set Culinary Standards The Perrone Family Has Been Doing Italian cuisine the Right Way For The Past 58 Years The Perrone family has been recognized for serving exquisite Italian cuisine for the past 58 years in South Florida and the tradition continues at Acqua Bistro located inside the Aquarius Condominium at 2751 South Ocean Drive in Hollywood Beach. Domenico and brother Frank, began making pizza at the once famous Doria’s Italian Restaurant on Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach before becoming the owners in 1970. They developed a steady following in the community and opened Pier Five in 1979 followed by their flagship eatery aptly named Villa Perrone in 1988 located next to the entrance to Gulfstream Race Park. After 14 lucrative years of pleasing the loyal diners with their delectable Italian fare, they closed the doors only to open their next venture years later in
downtown Hollywood named Perrone’s Cucina Italiana. Domenico had trained his son Peter in the art of fine Italian cooking and restaurant management where Peter has taken the reigns from his father managing and preparing all of your favorite meals. Acqua Bistro is a smaller, more quaint establishment than the other Perrone establishments, but diners can enjoy the beautiful ocean view as they join friends or family for lunch and
dinner available Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant will gladly cater your office party or host a gathering in an adjacent room that can comfortably accommodate up to 70 guests. The lunch menu features hamburgers and cheeseburgers with fries or savor their mouth watering chicken parmigiana hero or the traditional tuna fish sandwich or the popular chicken wings. Many folks choose to eat their dinner earlier and the Sunset Menu is available for
lighter eaters from 4:30-6:30. The entrées include soup or salad and coffee or tea and a dessert. The wide variety of selections range from Spaghetti and Meatballs to Grilled Salmon and New York Strip Steak for the carnivores. The meals are served with your choice of potato or vegetable. The traditional dinner menu is quite extensive serving some of your favorite dishes such as Il Pescatore consisting of fresh clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops
and calamari over a bed of linguini or Veal Saltimbocca topped with prosciutto, mozzarella cheese and spinach. Many opt for chicken or veal parmigiana, lasagna or penne a la vodka topped in a pink sauce filled with prosciutto and onion. My personal favorite is the Perrone’s signature seafood classic Snapper Pescatore. It will tantalize the taste buds of those who relish their shellfish as the snapper is served in a light marinara sauce with shrimp, mussels and clams. With the Thanksgiving Day holiday approaching, please join the Perrone family on November 26th for a feast. Call to book your reservation at: 954-589-1796. Acqua Bistro is located In The Aquarius Building 2751 South Ocean Drive, Hollywood, Florida 33019. Valet Parking is cheerfully validated inside the restaurant.

For those of us who joined with John Lennon to imagine a world of peace, it’s getting harder to reconcile that dream with the reality of the American police state. The complaint also alleged that Saltzman Friedland took credit for “other people’s work” by promoting misinformation about the COVID-19 Pandemic and that she “refused to do anything to protect Aventura’s children” because she allegedly refused to engage in the community effort to oust a convicted sex offender from the community because she knew the sex offender personally from their time growing up in Columbia.
