Contemporary artist Skip Hartzell creates paintings, works on paper, and sculptures of man’s best friend. Skip Hartzell’s dogs are anything but ordinary. Donning a shirt that reads, “I support putting dog abusers to sleep,” with dog patterned suspenders – it’s clear from the first introduction that Hartzell’s affinity for canines transcends the average. The artist is extremely passionate about his subject matter and donates proceeds from the sale of his artworks to animal-rescue no kill shelters. The biggest disservice a viewer could do to Hartzell’s work is liken it to mere dog-art. Hartzell is not a dog-painter, but instead an artist who is keen on exploring the
movement, form, and energy embodied by man’s best friend. “Dogs are always in the moment. Although nothing in life has held my attention longer or has been more fascinating to me than dogs, my work is about much more than that. It is about form, movement, color and texture. The dogs are a recognizable common denominator that allows me to communicate my joy of living, passions and sentiments.” -Skip Hartzell. The recipient of a BFA in Sculpture and an MFA in Painting, young Hartzell taught high school students for two years while continuing his creative studies at the University of Iowa. Soon after, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois with the intent to pursue
art full-time. After struggling to make end’s meet as an artist, Hartzell began taking up freelance illustration work which eventually evolved into a full fledged 35-year career in advertising and marketing. It wasn’t until Hartzell retired from his illustrious career that he fell back into art making full time. The most noteworthy of his inspirations? You guessed it. A longstanding, and deeply embedded love of dogs! The artist will be exhibiting at Aqua Art Miami, December 5-9, 2018 during Art Basel Miami Beach Week. A Dramatic Change In Vision For Dr. Henry Cherrick Retired Dean of UCLA School of Medicine, Seeing Colors For The First Time In 10 Years!
OCTOBER 2018 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8
Hollywood - You will have to excuse Dr. Henry Cherrick if he spends more time than usual looking at the lake behind his home. For nearly 10 years - both of his eyes had started to develop cataracts - and while he really never noticed that things were going downhill - it took a trip to the DMV to change everything. He then realized that he had been slowly losing his vision. “I knew I was having problems with my left eye,” Dr. Cherrick said. “When I failed the eye test to get my license renewed; that was it. Something had to be done - I was not living a quality life, not being able to see very well.” When his own ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Lane suggested he go visit Dr. Stanley Braverman at The Braverman Eye Center’s new state-of-the-art facility in Hollywood, it was indeed a life-changing decision. “From the first time my wife and I met with Dr. Braverman, it was amazing,” Dr. Cherrick, 78, said. “He not only found that I needed to get my left eye done, but said I had cataracts in both eyes.” Because of the pre-surgery workup (chest X-ray, EKG, etc.) that is required for cataract procedures, Dr. Cherrick opted to have both surgeries done within three weeks - and the results completely blew this one time dean of dental and medicine at UCLA, completely away. “I really never have had problems with my eyes in the past - other than wearing glasses for the past 30 years,” Dr. Cherrick said. “Someone who was a pathologist like myself and constantly putting my eyes to use with a microscope, sharp eyesight has never been an option.” But even though he felt that his eye sight has always been okay, after the left eye, Dr. Cherrick’s opinion changed - in a hurry. “I have to tell you that having that left eye done was amazing,” he recalled. “From watching a video to going over all the scenarios, I was ready and anxious. The results were impressive - to say the least” with the Symphony Extended Depth of Focus lens implant. While it took just over five days to see things starting to come into “focus” - Dr. Cherrick began noticing improvement immediately. In fact, on the sixth day, he started to see things like never before. “I could not recall ever seeing colors as vivid and sharp,” he said. “I also could read the paper without glasses, which I really had never been able to do. I was
ready to get the other eye done.” I didn’t even think I had a cataract in my right eye until I had the left eye done and realized how poorly I was seeing out of the unoperated eye. The second eye surgery came three weeks later and after that surgery, life has never been better. He can now see colors - vibrant and bold - and things that he never realized existed before - are indeed a major focal point. “I had worn a shirt for years and never realized it was blue,” he laughed. “I can sit outside all day and look at the colors and everything I never noticed before. I also find myself watching a lot of TV to see those colors pop out like never before.” With both surgeries out of the way, Dr. Cherrick and his wife are living a great life and this time around - seeing everything. “I cannot say enough about the staff at the Braverman Eye Center,” Dr. Cherrick explained. “My wife and I love Dr. Braverman!”

Andrew Gillum, left, with Chris King - his running mate, campaigning with their wives.
Ron DeSantis puts on his Claude Kirk mask routinely while campaigning against Andrew Gillum. The Republican candidate for governor also does a pretty good Donald Trump impression. With Halloween approaching, I won’t be going to a movie theatre. I fear Ron DeSantis will be there to yell boo. By Steve Schneider - Broward Resident
made sure she ordered home delivery of The Miami Herald and the now-defunct Miami News. She believed newspapers, and the reporters who worked for them, did our country a service by providing information and giving people a way to exchange opinions and question conventional wisdom. Born to a poor family in the Bronx, in New York City, months before The Great Depression devastated our nation, Frances also helped me confront problems I had with reading and spelling. We had moved to South Florida in 1966. That was the year that Robert King High, a liberal mayor from Miami, ran for governor. I don’t remember the details from that long ago campaign. However, I know my mother was disappointed that Robert King High didn’t make it to the Governor’s Mansion. Years later, I went online to better understand that campaign. According to Wikipedia, Robert King High fought corruption in Miami and supported civil rights. But Claude Kirk, the Republican candidate for governor, charged Miami had become the second worst crime city in the United States. Kirk also branded him an “extreme liberal.” Without proof, he linked Robert King High to corruption. Sound familiar? Ron DeSantis puts on his Claude Kirk mask routinely while campaigning against Andrew Gillum. The Republican
candidate for governor also does a pretty good Donald Trump impression. With Halloween approaching, I won’t be going to a movie theatre. I fear Ron DeSantis will be there to yell boo. A few years later, my fifth grade teacher at Sabal Palm Elementary School, in North Miami Beach, told me about a courageous journalist who wrote honestly and bravely about racial injustice in the South. My teacher taught me about Ralph McGill, and it’s fair to say Ron DeSantis is no Ralph McGill. Consider a recent article in The Tampa Bay Times. “You do not look to find the most radical person in the Democrat audience,” he said after reporters documented a number of racist people and groups lurking around his campaign. “I’d like you to start doing that because I can tell you it’s not very difficult. I can find anti-Semites around.”. DeSantis sounds like a bully. He’s just sticking out his tongue, holding his breath, and, like his hero, Donald Trump, saying, “Oh yeah. I’ll show you.” He has. The above newspaper quote was just the warm up. DeSantis is now going all out to tar Gillum and his 39-yearold running mate, Chris King, with charges of anti-semitism. It’s part of the same plays Kirk called five decades ago: Dump as much crap as you can on the campaign trail and hope it sticks. It stinks, but I don’t think it will stick. I say this because people across our state

The August article said, “While finishing college at Florida A. & M., he became the youngest city commissioner in the history of Tallahassee, and then, when he was thirtyfive, he became its mayor. Gillum portrayed his own rise as proof that Florida had once been a more progressive place, and that the recent conservative regime has been a deviation. “We’ve got to reinfuse into our public education what used to exist there,” he said. The 39-year-old politician was speaking at a church in Dania Beach before he won an upset victory in the Democratic primary for governor. Gillum was born in Miami to a poor family. His father struggled with alcoholism and at least some of his brothers spent time behind bars. Gillum’s grandmother ingrained in him an appreciation for education, telling the young man to “bring it home,” as in bring home the lessons you learned at school. In contrast, I wasn’t much of a student. But I’m 60-years-old now, which is as far as my mother got before she died from a heart attack on Nov. 6, 1989. As I get ready to collect social security in less than two years, I grasp the influence my mother and people from her generation had on me when I was growing up. I remember that Frances, my mother,
are meeting Andrew Gillum and Chris King in person and getting a feel for them. Some folks learn more from television news programs and newspaper articles. Lots of people are even flocking online to get the truth. Andrew Gillum and Chris King represent the opposite of hate; they are serving up hope and joy and the opportunity to bring progress back to Florida, even if their efforts will be resisted by a Republican majority in the state legislature. The young, liberal, Democratic duo support Medicare for All, a $15 an hour living wage and a major increase in spending on public education, among other things. They want to pay for their proposals by increasing the taxes corporations pay. Andrew Gillum and Chris King also want to legalize marijuana and tax it. During the Democratic primary, the Orlando Sentinel reported, “King wants to use taxes on weapons and bullets to pay for gun violence intervention and prevention programs, school safety measures and studies of gun violence.” We’ve got a few more weeks to go before we learn what Florida voters will decide. However, as Election Day approaches, I think back to 1970. I was attending J.F.K Junior High School, in North Miami Beach, that year. My civics teacher required us to memorize the entire U.S. Constitution, including the preamble. It began, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union...” That fall, as my mother helped me prepare for tests in civics class, Reubin Askew, a liberal politician from upstate Florida, was running for governor. He defeated Claude Kirk even though he proposed implementing a state tax on corporations. Reubin Askew wanted to dedicate that tax to increased funding for public education. Sound familiar? I guess you can tell I believe in free speech. But this is the first time I am paying for it. I’m doing it because this election puts me in touch with my roots. The campaign is also stirring feelings and thoughts I have struggled to comprehend for weeks now. I think it comes down to this: my mother passed away on Nov. 6, 1989, at around 10:50 p.m. Twenty-nine years to the day, possibly by 11 o’clock at night, I will learn if the values my mother held dear are affirmed by Florida voters. DEFENDER OF BUSINESS defends small business owners and has your back
OCTOBER 2018 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 12
Fort Lauderdale - We hear the horror stories. How small businesses are bullied and eventually forced to close. It happens every day, and there are very few people who really care about – or want to put a stop to it. In a world where being pushed around is as common in business as it has ever been, it is indeed refreshing that you have someone in your corner, and with Adi Amit, Esq., you have an innovator in watching out for the smaller business and those being taken advantage of. A difference maker throughout his career as an attorney, prior to opening his own office, Adi was indeed the driving force behind the creation and growth of the Employment Litigation Department of the Fort Lauderdale law firm Lubell Rosen, where he developed and implemented programs that protect the smaller businesses – often from their own employees. This is someone who has always elevated himself to a position where he could make the most of his talents, and now, he has that opportunity. As they embrace the grand opening of the practice in Fort Lauderdale, Adi and his wife,
Milena, bring years and wealth of experience that reaches to their own families. The experience of working hard and representing people has been in their blood. “It’s always been about looking out for the little guy,” Adi explained. “It is something that I have always done, and now, people need us more than ever before.” Through the years, with his military background, Adi has always been tough, never backing down, and doing everything for his clients. He is regarded as one of the best in a very talented south Florida having been selected as a Super Lawyers Rising Star® over the past several years. In developing a strategy that would help him defend the “mom and pop” businesses, Adi used his experiences of seeing many employees attempt to rip the smaller companies off – and that is exactly why he is excited about what he and Defender of Business do. From winning overtime suits through dismissal or after jury trials – to very topical minimum wage cases against employees, who colluded against the company they were working for,

This is where Defender of Business steps in and changes everything. “The cost of legal fees in this market could be $450 an hour and if you wanted to retain an attorney or the firm, it could, normally cost you Thousands of Dollars, so the little guy is backed into the corner,” Adi pointed out.” “We are cost conscious and charge less than the Adi Amit, Esq. is rare in this day of everyone looking out for market value for our themselves. FREE Clinic For Small Businesses The drive and focus of Adi Amit is the reason that hundreds and hundreds are educated in so many
phases of business. Because Defender of Business is so concerned about the future of some of those smaller “mom and pops,” they are offering a FREE clinic to small and mid-size business owners regarding wage and hour laws and Department of Labor regulations, retaliation, and discrimination issues, and record-keeping requirements, every second Wednesday of the month from 4-6 p.m. “What we want to create from this clinic is a culture of compliance with the rules and laws, and knowledge and awareness that we pass on to help businesses - especially small and new ones protect themselves,” Adi said. “Each clinic will feature different topics that will deal with everything needed to know. We also have question and answer sessions as well, which are very important.”

‘Families Sued By Their Live-in Housekeeper, Nanny And Au Pair Have A Voice’ One of the biggest surprises going on – especially in south Florida are the ones that you would never, ever expect. Au pair, nanny and livein housekeeper services have long worked out for the best in many families. But in some cases, the families who have treated their au pairs and nannys as family members are being taken advantage of because their relationship is informal - and that becomes a problem. If you are familiar with them, a housekeeper, nanny or an au pair become part of the family, traveling and often enjoying the perks that come along with it. But
you would be surprised how things turn south - in a hurry. “If you have either had an live-in housekeeper, au pair or nanny - or know someone who has, the relationship is based on a trust and bond,” Adi explained. “But what it all comes down to is the family is NOT protected at all. Years after, they face a claim by the person who lived in their house, claiming to have worked a lot more than the actual work was. There are no time clocks or records kept. That is where we come in and fight for them.” Remember, Adi and Defender of Business continue to fight hard for the little guy - just like you and I!

L.M.R. Public Adjusters Work For You Leor Meir Rabin’s Decades of Experience Has Paid Dividends For His Many Clients Hollywood – As he sits in his office – along heavily traveled Hollywood Boulevard, Leor Meir Rabin receives call after call on his cell phone – coming from his clients – about his business. In a world of taking shortcuts and looking at the bottom line, Leor is certainly refreshing, especially in his competitive universe. While Leor and his L.M.R. Public Adjusters will not promise you everything under the sun, they will make your life much, much easier - causing less headaches - and that comes from years of watching things done the wrong way. While many in this competitive business will make claims that they never live up to, L.M.R. Public Adjusters goes several steps beyond - working for their clients around the clock - from day 1. Through his impressive past in many facets of business – here
in the United States as well as his native Israel - Leor has earned a reputation of taking cases that he knows are favorable. He simply will not take every case that comes his way. “I give out my personal number to clients who know that they can count on me to be there for them every step of the way,” said Leor. “The thing I learned through the many years is if you are only in this to make money, and not to look out for the welfare of your clients, you will not last.” Leor, who knows every facet of construction, codes and anything to do with real estate and structures, is indeed so valuable. He knows how to help people who truly need it. His vast experiences continues to help so many. L.M.R. Public Adjusters does not work for the insurance company - they work for you. Offering residential and
commercial services, they are licensed and bonded property loss experts. Perhaps the most important part of Leor and his company is they know what you are entitled to receive after a loss. “What we ultimately do is help you through the claims process until your insurance claim is settled,” Leor pointed out. “With our years of experience in this field, we come to your home, association, or business to evaluate your loss and provide you with a FREE Claim Review!” Leor’s experience in dealing with insurance companies throughout the years, also has a great sense of what those companies will pay out, and that is something that very few public adjusters can claim. OFFERING A NUMBER OF CLAIMS By giving Leor a call, you will
have so many questions answered – quickly and to the point. With many south Floridians, as well as those in other countries, wanting him to fight for them, he is busy year round. “This isn’t just about a hurricane season kind of thing,” he explained. “What we do is year round, and that is why we handle so many claims.” From water to fire, property, mold, hurricane, pipe burst insurance, sinkhole insurance and wind flood damage, L.M.R. Public Adjusters covers it all. Fire departments throughout the U.S. respond to an estimated 1.5 million fires every year. These fires cause property damage exceeding $10 billion annually. Flooding, whether due to a broken water main or flash flooding, is always frightening. Regardless of where the flood water originated. Drying out a flooded property must be done
by specialists. Pipe burst damage doesn’t just occur from flooding after heavy rains. A broken pipe, a leak in a dishwasher hose, or a stoppage in your plumbing system can cause costly damage to your property. When it comes to mold, you simply cannot rid it by yourself. Having professionals do the job will save you plenty in the end – especially when it comes to your health. “In the end, if there is anything that we represent it is the regular guy – just like you and me,” Leor said, with a smile. “That is why I have this phone for you to call any time of day. It’s about helping people just like you and me.” Living in south Florida, we already know about hurricane season. The potential damage from hurricanes can last years.

CITY NEWS overseeing multiple properties requires you to keep a tight rein on expenses and manpower. When you can’t be everywhere at the same time, working with the most qualified, experienced partners is the best way to ensure that everything will move swiftly and smoothly when you need to file a claim with your insurance company. “As we all know, filing for insurance claims is never easy, Leor said. “In the case of a condominium, when damage occurs, there is so much to know. Everything is not black and white. We have the knowledge and skill to intervene on your behalf, acting in whatever capacity the situation calls for - public adjuster, loss consultant or insurance appraiser.”
LRM PUBLIC ADJUSTERS Continued From Page 14 “I am sure a lot of companies look forward to hurricane season and the thousands and thousands of claims that follow,” Leor explained. “But we do not chase storms. With us, this is a year-round deal and we have so many other claims to handle for our clients.”
Those daily homeowner claims – such as roof leaks and other things that happen are indeed a way of life, and Leor understands that as much as anyone – as a homeowner with a family. In addition, if you have a business or businesses - or happen to live in a condominium, L.M.R. Public Adjusters is in your corner, too. As a business/property owner,
WHAT IS A PUBLIC ADJUSTER? Insurance companies hire insurance adjusters to protect their interests and their shareholders profits. The state of Florida grants policyholders the right to
hire their own insurance adjuster, known as a PUBLIC ADJUSTER, to protect their interest as well. Public Adjusters are licensed in the same way as insurance company adjusters are licensed, and we even attend the same continuing education courses. In fact, many of our adjusters used to work as insurance company adjusters, and are well versed in all the ins and outs of insurance claims. Our business is Public Insurance Adjusting. With our experience, it would be safe to say that even a savvy policyholder would not be able to maximize their claim recovery efficiently as we can. We take the insurance claim woes off your shoulders, we estimate and calculate what we believe you are entitled to recover for your loss, and we negotiate a maximum settlement on your behalf. We routinely secure settlements higher than a typical policyholder would be able to recover on his/her own. LEOR MEIR RABIN, P.A.

Founders Day Takes Center Stage In Aventura By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest
For the past 12 years, Evelyn Draper and her family have taken part in their community’s biggest event. As a resident of any city that hosts a day that is devoted to the community and the residents who make it special, Draper is excited about this year’s 23rd anniversary of incorporation on Sunday, November 11 - with its annual Founders Day celebration. “The past few years, we have brought some friends out to see what our City is all about,” Draper said. “We are so proud of this community and love the many things about it, so when we have an event like this, we want to show it off a little.” Located at 3105 NE 190 Street, things get started
from noon – 5:00 p.m. at Founders Park. This year, with it being the official Veterans Day, the celebration takes on a new meaning. In addition to celebrating Aventura, it is also a time when we also pay our respects and give thanks to those who have fought - and continue to fight for our freedom around the globe. “The Founders Day event is really something that we came to three years ago for the first time,” Eli MorganMiller explained. “My husband is a veteran, having served in the 1990’s, so this is kind of a special Sunday for the entire family. My parents will be in town from Boston, so I am very excited.” What this day is all about for every age is an anniversary bash with stilt walkers, jugglers, char-
acters, activities, food, and pure entertainment! Having the opportunity - in November - to enjoy a beautiful outdoor day, participating in fun games and getting creative at the interactive art and science stations, is what this is all about. Since Aventura is a destination and so many flock to the impressive landmarks that the City has, it is nice to know that the locals can come and enjoy, sharing excitement with little ones at Toddler Town, relaxing under the dining tents - while catching a game of football on HDTVs. “The fun thing about Founders Day is you can come and relax and see many of your neighbors,” Draper pointed out. “Last year, they had fantastic food trucks as well as
enjoying performance acts on the community stage featuring the Aventura STAR talent competition, and much more! THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW Free parking will be available at the Aventura Government Center Parking Garage just west of Founders Park and at the Harbour Center on the corner of NE 188 Street and NE 29 Avenue. Is There A Path To End The Autism Epidemic? New published science and the screening of at-risk children before they receive any vaccines may provide a middle ground between the “all or nothing” positions of the two warring sides of the vaccine-autism debate, according to one of the leading critics of the government’s current vaccination program. On one side of the debate are parents who believe that today’s high number of mandatory vaccinations (children in the 1960s received three vaccinations, today’s children receive 38) can cause autism in vulnerable children. On the other side are government health officials who deny any a link. However, critics claim the government is being influenced by pharmaceutical companies whose revenues from vaccines exploded from $170 million in the early 1980s to more than $60 billion today. A study published in 2013 in the European Journal
of Clinical Investigation concluded that the pharmaceutical industry “masterfully influences evidence base production” and also “exerts direct influences on professional decisions and health consumers.” “There is a wealth of relevant scientific studies that prove that autism prevalence has skyrocketed in the United States,” says J.B. Handley, the father of a child with autism and author of the book: How To End The Autism Epidemic (https://www.chelsea green.com/product/how-toend-the-autism-epidemic/.) “And since 2004 there have been 11 groundbreaking discoveries in separate but related scientific fields that, taken together, reveal one of the causes of autism.” Handley says those discoveries, published in peerreviewed journals, include the work of such respected researchers as Dr. Carlos PardoVillamizar, a neurologist at
Johns Hopkins; Dr. Christopher Exley, a professor of bioinorganic chemistry at Keele University in England, and the late Dr. Paul Patterson, a professor of biological sciences at the California Institute of Technology. “Because of this new, published science,” Handley says, “we now know that autism is created by immune activation events in the brain during critical phases of brain development, typically by the time a child is 36-months-old, and that these immune activation events in the brain can be triggered by the aluminum adjuvant in vaccines. While the first of these discoveries occurred in 2004, the critical missing pieces have only fallen into place since 2010.” All the while, the autism rate has exploded. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the rates for autism in children went from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 36 children
in 2017. Handley says returning to the vaccine schedule used in the mid-1980s provides a moderate solution. He also believes that there should be thorough screening before any vaccines are given to determine which children are at-risk from serious vaccine injury. “We have the capacity to systematically assess the children who are more vulnerable before they receive a vaccine,” Handley says. “These children are at risk and it is the duty of our public health program to protect them.” Handley believes these are some of the steps that should be taken: Removing vaccine safety from the Centers for Disease Control. Having the same agency that is in charge of promoting vaccinations also in charge of vaccine safety is an inherent conflict, he says.
Screening vulnerable children should be implemented immediately. Some vulnerabilities are because of genetics, parental health histories of autoimmunity, and other children have problems that are apparent with a physical exam. Children who may have adverse reactions to vaccines also frequently have such conditions as ear infections, dark circles under the eyes and eczema. Test children before giving booster shots. Booster shots are provided for most vaccines. Handley believes many of these shots are unnecessary, as immunity has already been accomplished through the initial vaccine. A simple blood test would reveal if a booster shot is really necessary, he says. A child should not be vaccinated when the child is sick, has eczema, is taking antibiotics, and several other conditions. “I’m not against all vaccinations all the time,” Handley says. “But more screening to spare at-risk infants would be a positive step in the right direction.”

HEALTH Veterans and Abuse Victims Find Relief From PTSD Through Ketamine Combat veterans can’t always leave behind what they saw and experienced on the battlefield when they return to the civilian world. While some ease back into their old lives with minimal problems, many suffer from post-traumatic-stress syndrome so severe that they need professional help to overcome both it and the depression that often accompanies it. For some, that means seeking relief from their condition through one of the many ketamine centers that have opened in recent years throughout the United States. At these centers, doctors administer ketamine infusions to treat such conditions as PTSD, depression, anxiety, OCD and chronic pain. Extremely good effect is found at stopping suicidal thoughts. “Some researchers have called the drug the most important discovery in half a century,” says Aimee Cabo Nikolov, administrator of the Ketamine Medical Clinic (www.ketaminemedicalclinic.com) in Miami, a division of the Neurosciences Medical Clinic. Nikolov, who operates the clinic with her husband, Boris, and a team of medical professionals, says about 35 percent of the
patients the clinic sees are military veterans seeking treatment for PTSD. Nikolov, who has a background in nursing, has dealt with her own PTSD issues, though hers were caused by childhood abuse issues rather than combat. Like the clinic’s patients, she found ketamine to be a helpful ally in battling mental health problems. “Ketamine infusions have lifted a lot of my own depression,” she says. It’s only fairly recently that ketamine became popular as a drug for battling such troubling mental-health conditions as PTSD and depression. Originally, ketamine was developed as an anesthetic in the early 1960s, but it wasn’t long before people began using it as a recreational drug that was known on the streets as Special K. It’s still used as an anesthetic, but over time some in the medical profession began to realize it could be used to treat depression and PTSD. Studies have shown that Ketamine infusion can produce significant and rapid reduction in the severity of PTSD symptoms. Just what is PTSD? Here’s what the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says:
The cause and symptoms. PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after going through some sort of trauma, such as experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. Some symptoms include reliving the event, avoiding situations that remind you of the event, having more negative feelings and beliefs, and feeling jittery or always on the alert. Trauma’s effects. Trauma is actually fairly common and doesn’t always lead to PTSD. About 60 percent of men and 50 percent of women experience at least one trauma in their lives, the VA reports. For women, trauma is more likely to be the result of sexual assault and child sexual abuse. For men, it’s more likely to be because of accidents, physical assault, combat or a disaster. Prevalence of PTSD. About 7 to 8 percent of people have PTSD at some point in their lives, and about 8 million adults in the U.S. have PTSD in any given year. Women are more likely than men to experience PTSD. About 10 percent of
women will have PTSD, compared with about 4 percent of men. Nikolov says that patients at the Ketamine Medical Clinic receive
treatment that is individualized for their specific situation. Generally, though, that means six to eight initial ketamine infusions two times a week. That’s followed by boosters, which can be one infusion every two to six weeks. “Ketamine has been described as rapid-fire treatment for depression,” Nikolov says. “For many veterans suffering from PTSD, ketamine is providing hope after other kinds of treatment didn’t give them the results they needed.”
Is Your Back Killing You At Work? Here Are 5 Tips That Can Help The work day ends, but the back pain doesn’t. Sitting all day at a computer takes a toll on our backs, yet for a large percentage of Americans, sitting in front of a computer sums up their job description. And that work-related back pain that starts out minor can soon become severe, causing problems
in all areas of your life. “The longer you have a back problem, the more damage it will create, the more it will resist getting better, and the more time it will take to heal,” says Bradford Butler, a chiropractor and author of The Blueprint for Back Pain Relief: The Essential Guide to Nonsurgical Solutions (www.drbrad
fordbutler.com). “So, the best course is to prevent back problems from happening to begin with.” He offers a few tips for those whose jobs require them to sit, sit and sit some more: Watch how you sit. Most people are putting pressure on their backs, necks and shoulders

because they don’t work in an ergonomically correct position, Butler says. Here’s how to achieve the optimal position: Sit with your body no more than an arm’s length from the computer and mouse, and don’t lean your head and neck forward. You should be able to rest your hand comfortably on the mouse with the elbow at the same height as the mouse pad. The monitor should be 2 or 3 inches above eye level. Choose the right chair. Ideally, you want a chair with lumbar support. “If there is no lumbar support, you can place a pillow behind your lower spine,” Butler says. Chairs that can tilt back also take pressure off the base of the spine and help prevent back pain. But if back pain has already started, Butler suggests placing ice between the lumbar support and the back for 20
minutes to reduce inflammation. Don’t cradle your phone. Have you ever pinned your phone between your shoulder and your ear so you can type while you talk? Butler has a one-word piece of advice: Don’t. “The intense strain from holding the phone that way for more than a couple of minutes can have a lasting effect on your posture and add to your back and neck pain,” he says. Take a break. For about five minutes every hour, get up and move around. Take a walk, stretch or do anything that takes you away from the computer and lets your body escape all the sitting and staring you’ve been doing, Butler says. Unload some baggage. Do you carry to work a bag or briefcase that’s so heavy even an Olympic weight-
lifter would feel the strain? If it weighs more than 10 percent of your body weight, then it’s putting too much of a strain on your back, Butler says. He suggests you lighten the load or get a different bag, preferably one with a long strap so it can be carried across your chest like a messenger bag. That can reduce the diagonal load on your back. “It’s important to understand that your spine was designed to move,” Butler says. “If you are sitting for a good part of your day, you are effectively doing the opposite of what keeps your spine healthy. “The old saying ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ couldn’t be truer, especially when it comes to your back. Prevention is a mindset. You probably already do it in other areas of your life. When it comes to your back, you just need some new thinking and new habits.”
REAL ESTATE 5 Issues You Face When Inheriting A House Estate Executors Have To Balance Family Needs And Best Options At An EmotionallyCharged Time The recent death of legendary singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin initially posed a quandary for her four surviving sons. Because she didn’t leave a will, her $80 million fortune – including Franklin’s numerous real estate holdings – likely will take longer to divide, and the process could become complicated. Although Franklin’s sons appointed her niece to execute the estate, the situation brings to mind how family feuds and other problems can potentially result when inheritance portions aren’t clearly defined, or when an executor may be in over their head. Many newfound executors can face uncertainty and feel stress when inheriting a property after the death of a loved one. “Inheriting a property can come as a shock and may feel like an insurmountable obstacle,” says Alex Lehr (www.lehrreal estate.com), a real estate broker and author of The Unexpected Sale: Guidance For The Executor / Administrator Of An Estate. “Especially in the wake of a family tragedy or death, being the executor of an estate can be challenging. And usually the biggest asset in an
estate – and the most difficult to resolve – is a house.” Lehr provides a list of important decisions the executor might face when a house is part of an inheritance: To keep, rent or sell. Competing interests among siblings can make the right decision difficult. “Caught in the middle, the executor has to ask the heirs to keep their emotions under control and put the rational facts on the table,” Lehr says. “Selling is often the best decision if medical bills, tax issues or other reasons require cashing out. And it produces a specific amount that can be divided equally.” Can you manage a property investment? When considering keeping the property in the family, the executor needs to be objective about the beneficiaries’ dependability. “Would you choose the other beneficiaries to be your partners in any longterm investment?” asks Lehr. “Could they get divorced, go bankrupt or bring other entanglements?” And if you decide to rent the property, Lehr says there are issues to consider such as the local market for rentals and your ability to maintain the property. Establishing value of the property. If one heir or beneficiary wants to buy the house, the
estate must determine the market value and get a fair price for the heirs and beneficiaries. “One way is to get two appraisals, and to look at estimates from a real estate website such as Zillow,” Lehr says. “Alternatively, the executor can put the property on the market with the expressed provision that one of the heirs has the right of first refusal to match the highest offer.” Repair and renovate? The executor must
make sure the house is maintained in good condition, necessary repairs are carried out, and that it’s kept insured. “An executor can be personally liable for failure to maintain a property that results in losses for the heirs,” Lehr says. “But how much work is worthwhile before putting a home on the market? That’s a big question that depends on the property and circumstances.” Furnished or unfur-
nished? It’s not unusual for an inherited home to be filled with a 30-year accumulation of stuff. “In most cases, when the property goes on the market, thinning out the furnishings will help it show better,” Lehr says. “Nine out of 10 buyers first see the home in online photographs.” “Being an executor is a high-responsibility, timeconsuming, and often thankless job that people often take on while grieving,” Lehr says. “It’s up to the executor to assess an estate.”
