Relief For A Baseball Icon Bucky Dent’s Cataract Surgery Is A Homerun At Braverman Eye Center
OCTOBER 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8
While Bucky Dent is most famous for his home run in a tiebreaker game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park at the end of the 1978 regular season, this south Florida native has done so much during his 67 years. As a former football and baseball standout at Hialeah High in the late 1960’s, Dent’s career has truly been filled with more ups than downs – and being part of the historic New York Yankee organization for decades – he cherishes every moment. But as much as he has been “Superman” to so many baseball fans throughout the years, Dent is just like all of us when it comes to his eyesight, and when he had cataract surgery on March 12, it brought relief from years of vision that wasn’t so perfect. His visit to the spacious, state of the art, Braverman Eye Center in Hollywood for an initial consultation, brought smiles and plenty of optimism about his vision and how it could be corrected. “My eye doctor back in Connecticut felt that I needed cataract surgery, and because of my home here in south Florida, immediately suggested Dr. (Stanley) Braverman,” Dent recalled. “From the first time I went for the consultation, it was
amazing. Dr. Braverman and his staff went over everything with me.” Like anyone when it comes to having anything to do with the eyes, Dent was obviously concerned, but that meeting with Dr. Braverman eased all of that. Dent has been wearing glasses for years, and because his vision was getting blurry and he was having a tough time seeing, the surgery was needed to keep up that quality lifestyle. Because of his busy schedule, still working with the Yankees, his plan was to do the first one in March, which was successful, and then come back later on and get the other eye done. “I can tell you this, within the first few days of the surgery – when things started to come together – it was amazing how clearly I was seeing. Because the other eye needs to have the same procedure done, you can see the difference.” As for the surgery, it could not have gone better. Dent was pleased. He is looking forward to getting the other eye done and cannot recommend Dr. Braverman and the Braverman Eye Center enough. Said Dr. Braverman, “Bucky had a great result from the surgery. He is 20/ 20 with no correction!” “The experience was tremen-
dous and there was NOT a step that wasn’t explained,” said Dent, who also had his astigmatism corrected at the same time as the cataract surgery. “It certainly makes my daily life a lot easier.” DENT’S GAME 163 HOMER Dent’s unlikely homer 41 years ago is one of the most famous plays in history. The bat he used to clear the Monster wasn’t his own. Teammate Mickey Rivers, another south Florida prospect (Miami Northwestern) noticed that Dent’s bat had a crack in the handle, and so he lent his lumber to Dent midway through his pivotal plate appearance. Dent is the only player to homer in a one-game tiebreaker out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup. He hit out of the ninth spot in all but 12 of his appearances during the 1978 campaign. He wasn’t the only player who homered that day at Fenway. Future Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski and Reggie Jackson also had homers as well, with Jackson’s eighth-inning solo homer proving to be the difference in the one-run contest. Dent’s moment in the sun didn’t end in the tiebreaker. After a quiet ALCS performance against the Royals, he hit .417
WHAT ARE CATARACTS? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. CATARACT SURGERY: WHAT TO EXPECT Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to
have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This Femtosecond Laser Assisted Surgery reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made clear lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses

OWN A DUAL PURPOSE PROPERTY The Benefits of Buying a Vacation Rental Home as a Real Estate Investment. By Irene Davis Beachfront Realty
places to buy a vacation rental because it already attracts visitors year round, proving that beaches are still a major draw for travelers. So with the combination of websites like VRBO.com, and Florida being such a highly desired destination for vacationers, in my opinion it makes owning a vacation rental in South Florida a perfect investment choice. If you are interested in a vacation rental property that fits the above description, I have reviewed the market and I feel Bay Harbor ONE in Bay Harbor Island is it! A few facts about Bay Harbor ONE: • 36 brand new FULLY FURNISHED units by Steven G. INC, and is pet friendly. • Includes concierge and Shabbat elevator.
• 15 to 20 minute WALK to the famous upscale Bal Harbour Shopping Mall, restaurants and miles of beaches. • RENT IT OUT 52 TIMES A YEAR!!! The homeowners association allows this and gives buyers the flexibility to use their own unit anytime. Bay Harbor ONE was built with the express purpose of encouraging short-term vacation rentals, so buyers will NOT run afoul of the condo board. A RARE find for this location and is written in the condo documents. • Run your vacation rental like a business. You will have to apply for a “vacation rental” LICENSE, BEFORE you rent your Bay Harbor ONE unit out as a shortterm vacation rental. In popular tourist markets like Miami, you can make more money from your luxury unit by renting it out weekly, than through long term leases. You can rent your unit out
yourself or use a vacation management rental company. • 7% Leaseback program - Take advantage of the Developers incentive. Designed to offer maximum benefit of ownership. What does this mean for you? • Explanation: With a FULL PRICE OFFER, Developer will manage buyers vacation rental for two years. • Example: Unit # 301 is a 2/2.5, 1380s/ft condo listed at: • $871,000 X 7% = $60,970 X 2years = $121,940 divide by 8 = $15,242.50. (There are 8 quarters in 2 years.) Every quarter for two years, the developer will cut buyer a check for $15,242.50 and
pay your taxes and HOA fees. What is the catch? You and your family can NOT use the vacation rental for two years. The demand for vacation rentals is at an all time high, and continues to grow. With the cities of South Beach, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale all less than a half an hour away, living or vacationing at Bay Harbor ONE is the perfect location to experience South Florida at its very best. Events like Super Bowl 54, held in Miami February 2020, Art Basel, Boat and Car shows, Fashion, Music, Movie and Food Festivals draw crowds of people needing places to stay in comfort. Buyers, call me for a tour of Bay Harbor ONE. Limited inventory! Make your investment work for you!

Feeling overwhelmed? Tips to make time for self-care (BPT) - Ever feel like the days just get away from you, and you don’t have time to do the things you need to do, much less want to do? Often wish you could just spend your evenings or weekends on your personal goals, practicing self-care or just relaxing? There are many ways you can take control of your time and take better care of yourself. Sometimes it’s a question of prioritizing what you want to do - and outsourcing the rest. Simplify meal prep and cooking. Unless cooking is enjoyable and relaxing for you, chances are you get home from work stressed and hungry - and tired of takeout. Fortunately, there are dozens of options for letting yourself off the hook when it comes to cooking from scratch without sacrificing good, healthy meals. Today many plans exist for ordering pre-packaged ingredients and recipes in a manageable form for you to prepare at home, with minimum fuss. Not only are they delicious,
but you can find services that cater to particular health plans or your specific dietary needs. Get help with pet care. Unless you have kids old enough to take care of Fido, or you enjoy taking him for his walks, it’s easy to find pet care services, or even a reliable neighborhood teenager, to help walk the dog or check on the cat, particularly if you work long hours or travel for work. Doggy day care services, boarding and grooming experts also help lift some of the burden of caring for your furry friends. Outsource house cleaning. While we all wish we had beautifully organized, clean homes, it’s almost impossible to do everything we’d like to keep our houses in great shape. There are many affordable cleaning companies that offer a variety of services that allow you to choose which tasks or rooms you most need help with. Many home cleaning services are available weekly, every other week, monthly or one-time, so you can
pick the service that best suits your lifestyle. Imagine the hours of reclaimed time and peace of mind you’ll have, knowing you’re coming home to a beautifully clean home every night. Prioritize health and exercise. You try your best to exercise, so why not give yourself the most help you can to meet your wellness goals, and a reward when you achieve them? Hiring a personal trainer or signing up for a class that will inspire you to keep up your fitness level is an investment in yourself that will pay dividends in your future, and make you feel great right now. Whether it’s Zumba, spin class, yoga or Pilates, any activity that helps you build strength, flexibility and fitness is worth the cost. Then be sure to
treat yourself with an occasional massage, sauna or spa visit whatever helps you relax and feel good. Take a time-out. When you are able, plan your next vacation for a location that will be fun and relaxing. If a long vacation is not in the cards, plan a mini-break,
Something as simple as spending a night in a local hotel - with as many amenities as you can enjoy - will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. You’ve earned it. The next time you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed, choose to outsource those tasks
even just for a weekend, to get away from the daily routine and let you focus on yourself, your significant other or your family.

The Humane Society of Greater Miami has launched an important fundraising effort that will enable the organization to take in and treat even more of the community’s homeless animals. The $1.5 million initiative will be allocated for expansion of the Humane Society’s facility, a project that began in 2017 and is set to break ground in 2020. As Miami-Dade’s pet homelessness problem continues to be a prominent issue, the Humane Society’s capacity to assist remains limited. As an adoption guarantee facility, the Humane Society is able to provide shelter and care for hundreds of dogs and cats while they wait for their permanent home, no matter how long it takes. However, once there is no more space in the facility, they are no longer able to take in additional animals. By adding space that will be dedicated to taking in pets who need extended time at the shelter due to medical needs or other processing requirements, they will be able to give even more homeless dogs and cats in need the extra care that they require and a chance at a happy and healthy life with a loving family. “This project will allow us to save more dogs and cats than ever by increasing the amount of space we have available to pull animals from local open-admit shelters, thus keeping them off the streets,” says Executive Director, Laurie Hoffman. “We need to create more room to receive animals,” Hoffman adds. “The additional space would allow us to quarantine and treat them should they get sick, and in the event that the disease contracted is contagious, we need to have the ability to isolate them from the rest of the shelter animals in order to ensure every pet’s excellent health. This project will be crucial in helping us achieve those goals.” Not only will the expansion allow the Humane Society to

take in more animals than ever before, it will help them take in even more large dogs. Large dogs (dogs over 40 pounds) make up more than half of the organization’s canine population. The overabundance of large breed dogs is not a problem unique to this Miami shelter, but is present in animal shelters and rescue groups throughout South Florida. Labradors, Bulldogs, Shepherds and other large breed mixes enter shelters daily and unfortunately, there is not always space to take them all in. The new wing will allow the organization to take in twice the amount of large dogs, which they hope over time will lead to a notable reduction in the number of big dogs roaming the streets. CITY NEWS Will An Apple A Day – Along With Checkups - Help Keep Tooth Decay Away? Eating may be a necessity, but when it comes to your teeth and gums, all that munching also can lead to quite a battle raging in your mouth. Some of those foods – especially the sugary and starchy ones – act like invading forces, feeding the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease, even as the saliva in your mouth fights back as best it can, trying to ward off the detrimental effects of the acids and enzymes. “Tooth decay can be a problem for people of all ages – children, teenagers and adults – and yet it’s completely avoidable,” says Dr. Seth Newman (www.asktheorthos.com), an orthodontist and co-author with Dr. Steve Giannoutsos of Giving It To You Straight: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Orthodontics But Were Afraid To Ask. Newman and Giannoutsos say that there are plenty of ways that what’s in your diet affects not just your weight, but also your teeth and gums. “Most people know that sugar and processed snacks can lead to tooth decay, even if they don’t always avoid those foods,” Giannoutsos says. “But there are other foods that also can be troublesome, and many people may not realize that.”
He and Newman provide a few tips for making sure your diet isn’t harmful to your oral health: Watch out for bread – and chips. Chomp down on a candy bar and you might think to yourself that you better brush soon, lest the sugar go to work on your teeth before you can head it off. But the same thought might not occur to you when you’re eating breadsticks. Yet, foods that are high in carbohydrates and starches – such as bread, chips, pasta and crackers – contribute to the plaque acid that attacks tooth enamel. Braces come with extra concerns. Beyond the usual dental care, there are additional dietary worries to consider when you have braces. People wearing braces should avoid foods that are too hard, sticky or chewy, Newman says, such as gum, nuts, corn chips, hard taco shells, hard candy and popcorn, just to name a few. Develop good food-choice habits. When you’re grocery shopping, always check the nutrition labels. “Selecting snacks that are low in sugar can help combat tooth decay,” Giannoutsos says. “If poor nutrition continues, your oral
health will decline, potentially resulting in gum disease and tooth loss.” Fruits and vegetables that are rich in fiber are a good choice for improving your oral health. Examples are apples, carrots and celery. In addition, milk, cheese and other dairy products are excellent options because of the calcium, phosphate and vitamin D they contain. Finally, drink fluoridated water as much as possible. If your tap water doesn’t include fluoride, check with your dentist for a fluoride supplement. Ultimately, more is at stake than your teeth and gums. Left untreated,
Giannoutsos and Newman say, oralhealth problems can have a detrimental effect on your overall health, contributing to such conditions as heart disease and diabetes. That’s an additional reason why regular checkups – along with brushing and flossing – are so critical. “It’s hard to resist your inner sweet tooth, so I wouldn’t say that you should never indulge in treats,” Newman says. “But when you do, brushing your teeth as quickly as possible afterwards will help decrease the risk of decay.”

The Lillian S. Wells Foundation has donated a $5 million gift to complete the Broward Performing Arts Foundation’s $30 million Campaign for the Parker that will provide capital improvements to the iconic Parker Playhouse. “The Wells family continues to leave an indelible mark on our community and for that we are incredibly grateful,” said Kelley Shanley, president and CEO of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which has managed the Parker since 2005. “With their support and the support of all our donors, the reimagined Parker will serve as a cultural, entertainment and education venue for generations to come.” The Lillian S. Wells Foundation has provided institutional support to the Broward Center for three decades. The Foundation’s first gifts were to the capital campaign that built the theaters 30 years ago. In 2014, a donation from the Wells Foundation created the Lillian S. Wells Backstage Plaza to provide access to excellence in entertainment and education at the Broward Center; and, most recently, its gift to the Campaign for the Parker brought that fundraising effort to its goal and named the hall at Parker Playhouse, the Lillian S. Wells Hall. “My grandmother
Lillian was so shy, I don’t know what she would think about having her name on so many buildings today,” said Barbara Wells, president of the Lillian S. Wells Foundation. “I will always honor the desires of my grandparents and father. I try to support everything they liked. But now, the Parker is for me, and I am really excited about it!” Parker Playhouse will be transformed with upgrades, renovations and new spaces that will take the popular entertainment venue to the next level. The classic elegance of the Parker and popular continental seating configuration of the theater will be maintained. Many original architectural features will remain intact and the original façade of the building will come to life in the stunning new lobby. Upgraded systems, stateof-the-art equipment, advanced acoustics and new hospitality experiences, with private donor and premium lounges and a signature bar area in the lobby, will elevate the Parker to a new standard. “The heritage of the Parker and the legacy of the Wells family have been woven into the cultural fabric of Fort Lauderdale for more than 50 years,” said Richard Welch, chairman of the Board of the Broward Performing Arts Foundation. “Through their contributions they
have made our community better. Their spirit lives on in the Parker and the Broward Center.” After receiving funding from the City of Fort Lauderdale to kickstart the Campaign for the Parker, the lead gift came from S. Donald Sussman in whose honor the Sussman Grand Lobby will be named. JM Family Enterprises, Inc. donated $1 million and will be recognized with the naming of the Parker stage. Other million-dollar gifts came from The Peck Foundation, Milwaukee, and Linda Haller and they will be honored with the naming of the Bar in the Sussman Grand Lobby and the VIP Lounge, respectively. Bank of America, through its community development grant program, provided a grant of $500,000 and will be recognized with the naming of the Guest Services area in the new main lobby. Other major gifts came from; Deborah and Gary Wendt, Mary Jane Harlow Charitable Trust, Dr. Nile and Bette Lestrange and the Slattery Family Foundation. Renovations to the Parker have begun. As the project will be completed in phases, the entertainment venue is anticipated to remain operational during the renovation. Sport Aches And Pains Getting You Down?? Let The Power Of Shockwave Therapy Heal Your Entire Body!!! The Shockwave Therapy healing method uses modern technology to provide patients with safe and highquality physiotherapy treatment. This method of physiotherapy works by accelerating the healing process in the body through stimulating your metabolism and improving blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue. The shockwave machine applies strong energy pulses to affected areas, which occur for short periods of time creating microcavitation bubbles that expand and burst. The resulting force penetrates tissues where it stimulates the cells that are responsible for connective tissues and bone healing. The effectiveness of this method offers many benefits to help the body when it has not been able to heal itself. Extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (ESWT) has been widely used in clinical practice for managing various orthopedic conditions. The ESWT has shown to exert an overall positive effect on the treatment success rate, pain reduction,
and range of motion restoration in patients with soft tissue disorders. Various research studies suggest that focused shock wave therapy can relieve pain and can serve as an ideal alternative treatment option. The efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been shown to be a great alternative to standard treatments and surgery. Shockwave Therapy Treatment Has Shown Great Benefits For Muscles And Tendons In These Areas • Elbows • Neck, Shoulders • Hands, Wrist • Back, Hips, Groin • Legs, Hamstring • Knees • Shin, Achilles Tendons • Feet, Heels Plus the energy pulses of the Shockwave Therapy healing method have also been able to provide patients with safe relief of general muscle aches and pains, as well as provide general wellness massage and skin elasticity benefits.
Main Benefits Of Shockwave Therapy Treatment Non-surgical Treatment, Easy to Apply - Clients don’t need to worry about undergoing painful surgical procedures to heal. As an easy and effective procedure, Shockwave Therapy is beneficial since the modern machines used are intuitive and easy to use, therefore clients can apply this treatment. Accelerated Healing - The key benefit of Shockwave Therapy is that it highly accelerates healing, allowing clients to go back to their normal lives within the shortest possible amount of time. Just by undergoing a few sessions of this type of therapy, one can start to feel the healing effects in minutes. Safe and Effective, with Minimal Side Effects - This method has been tested by highly-qualified professionals who confirm that it is safe and effective. Another key benefit that people who undergo Shockwave Therapy appreciate is minimal side effects. This means that patients spend their full time on healing without
the pains and down time of negative side effects.
