Assisted-Living Resort
Staying Innovative with Activities & Outings in Assisted Living Story by Chris Snyder Director of Community Relations of Timeless Life Care
At Azalea Gardens Assisted Living resort our commitment to our residents and families is matched by our commitment to the activities and outings that we provide for them. The activities planned at Azalea Gardens are to help improve the quality of life for the seniors and are designed to meet their physical emotional and social needs. It is the Activity Coordinators job to keep a record of activities used with the residents, for one-onone, in room activities as well as those used in group settings, and to gauge the ability levels of resi-
dents and determine some activities that may be more beneficial to them. Monthly calendars are created each month by Chris Snider, Director of Community Relations for Timeless Life Care and are mailed out to keep everyone informed of the planned activities. These help the residents, the staff, resident families and others know what is coming up and what to prepare for. Many of these activities are planned weeks or months in advance and are based around monthly themes that involve the holidays or other large events, such as Independence Day (in the USA), Canada Day (In Canada),
Remembrance Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and many more. It is a challenge for our activity director to keep things fresh and
interesting for so many residents in order that they don’t become bored and even irritated with activities that no longer present a
challenge or new and creative ideas. Activities need to attract

1st Priority 24 Hour Water Extraction & Clean-Up Using the latest technology to restore your property to its pre-loss condition (954) 923-9822 • (305) 517-1417 A Job for Professionals Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. A small area of mold and moisture can spread to big damage, it’s 1st Prioritys job to eliminate it. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st
Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. It’s Better To Hire 1st Priority It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority a licensed building contractor for mold remediation and mold assessment has 10 years experience in the industry. They can use that experience to find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-the-art technology.
Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition using all new materials. To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-ofpocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in

DANIA BEACH - A visit to Brighten Dental Care can be downright relaxing. And the reward is a beautiful smile. Brighten Dental Care is a multispecialty office, including Endodontist Root Canal Specialist, Periodontist (gum surgery specialist) and Orthodontist, where a patient can take care of all his or her dental needs. “Our goal is to provide each patient with the very best possible treatment in a way that fits his or her individual needs, expectations, and budget,” Dr. Gupta says. “We will inform a patient of what we think is the best course of treatment.” Dr. Gupta and his friendly staff Kiran

“Normally I am very scared of the dentist. Hence, I had not been to one in 10 years. But Dr. Gupta was very calming. He assured me that I would not be in pain, and he was right.” – Robyn Almodonai
(Office Manager) Brittney (Patient Coordinator, Elsa (Dental Hygienist), and Marilyn (Senior Dental Assistant) go out of their way to make patients feel at home and their visits enjoyable. Snap-On Smile WHY Snap-On Smile? No shots. No drilling. No adhesives. You can even eat while wearing the Snap-On Smile® appliance. Patients looking for a noninvasive, reversible, affordable approach to restorative and cosmetic dentistry are excellent candidates for Snap-On Smile. It’s an easy, quick and affordable solution for patients who want to feel better, look better, and function better. Patients using Snap-On Smile report an immediate boost to confidence and self esteem. Most are impressed with the natural look and feel of Snap-On Smile and are grateful for the brief time investment - about two weeks - to achieve such life changing results. This revolutionary appliance is the ideal solution for solving a wide variety of short- and long-term clinical challenges, as it serves as both a non-invasive restorative option as well as a diagnostic appliance. Applications include using Snap-On Smile as aesthetic provisionals for implant restorations, as cosmetic removable partial dentures, and even as a long-term smile Laser Dentistry Many people, both adults and children, dread going to the dentist because they fear the Novocain and drilling that have long been the standard treatment for cavities and other tooth repairs. Now, laser dentistry can eliminate the need for both of them. “The laser can cut teeth and gums, fix cavities, do gum and bone surgery,” Dr. Gupta says. Because there is no drilling necessary, the annoying and sometimes frightening sound of the drill is also eliminated. “The dental laser uses water to cut, not the heat of the laser,” Dr. Gupta explains. “It
checks bleeding immediately, making it easy for the doctor to see exactly what he is doing, and it instantly kills any germs it touches, which helps to prevent the possibility of infection. The motto for the laser is, “no shot, no pain, no drilling, no kidding!’ and it’s certainly true.” Electronic Injection, Nitrous Oxide, & Oral Sedation For the times when an injection for anesthesia is necessary, the Midwest Electronic Injection machine makes the process easier and virtually pain-free. The device electronically measures the amount of pressure in tissues so when the liquid anesthesia enters, it is precisely the right amount.” Anxious patients can benefit from nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and a single oral dose of sedation medication before any injection. “Many fearful patients prefer this type of anesthesia,” Dr. Gupta says. Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain Syndrome Another piece of equipment treats TMJ pain syndrome. The removable retainer type device creates space and flexibility in the jaw, allowing more blood to flow and causing pain to lessen. “TMJ can be a debilitating disorder,” Dr. Gupta says. “With this device, we can help the patient get back to normal.” Professional Whitening Professional whitening can be achieved in two ways: bleaching at home, or with an in-office procedure. With at-home bleaching, the dental professional creates a custom-fitted tray molded to the patient’s teeth. A spacer material coating the tray allows exactly the right amount of bleach into the tray, a process that eliminates overflow or waste. The patient uses the trays at home according to instructions given by the dentist. When bleaching is performed in the office, the dental professional can
carefully control the bleaching material. Some of the brand name bleaching systems being used at Brighten Dental Care are Zoom, Sapphire, and the most powerful, Deep Bleaching System K O R whitening. Gone are the days when straightening crooked teeth required unsightly metal bands, brackets, and wires. Instead, Dr. Gupta is certified in the use of Invisalign, braces that are virtually invisible. Implementing the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, the lab creates a series of precisely customized invisible aligners. Now you can have a beautiful smile with invisible braces within six months to a year, without a metal mouth. The invisible braces are a set of aligners which you change every two weeks. Apart from teens, adults are perfect candidates for invisible braces. No messy and awkward metal brackets and wires, less frequent visits, usually 6 to 8 weeks and Brush and floss as usual. Dental Implants Implants are a wonderful alternative to dentures or bridges. They can also be an adjunct to make dentures more comfortable. Once they are put in, they are as strong as real teeth, and can look just as attractive. “You can replace just a single tooth, or all missing teeth with dental implants,” Dr. Gupta says. Veneer Smile Make-Over If teeth have permanent stains or are uneven, broken, misshapen, or have noticeable gaps, laminates or veneers may be the best way to create a beautiful smile. Dr. Gupta uses an amazing product called Lumineer by Denmat.. These thin porcelain laminates bond to the front of the teeth to create a nearly perfect surface. The procedure is permanent and carries a three- to five-year warranty, although many veneers have been shown to last 15 years or longer. A Perfect Smile For Every Budget With interest free or low interest payment plans from Care-Credit and Chase Health Advance, you can have the quality dentistry now and pay it later in small monthly payments (subject to credit approval). So no more excuses, you can have the extraordinary smile you always wanted without any fear of pain or Pesos.

CITY NEWS Don’t let return charges on your leased car put a dent in your wallet (ARA) - The allure of a new car and low monthly payment options draw many people to lease a car, even though they could face serious fines and extra charges when they return the vehicle at the end of the lease term. If you’re leasing a car, however, you can take steps to avoid getting dinged by lease return charges. Sweat the small stuff Just about every vehicle on the road has some scratches, nicks, chips and dents; parking lots and garages can’t protect a vehicle completely. Inevitably, doors get dinged and bumpers scuffed. And even if the blemishes on your leased car are small, don’t think the dealership won’t notice. Even small flaws can quickly rust and grow into large headaches, so fixing the problem as soon as possible is always the best solution. Fortunately, you can avoid marked-up repair costs by using Scratch Fix touch-up paint products from Dupli-Color. The innovative solution can be used for nearly any surface paint damage, and is available in hundreds of exact-match colors for a seamless fix. The easy-to-use car touchup paint features a roller ball tip for precision, taper-tip brush for full coverage and clear coat to ensure an exact
manufacturer-approved match. Scratch Fix costs a small fraction of what the dealership will charge for a professional repair, and is an easy way to restore the appearance of any vehicle - leased or owned. Tire check Like a pair of shoes, constant use will cause tires to wear down quickly. Tires are often one of the first places a dealer will look when inspecting a vehicle, and besides being a safety concern, bald or damaged tires can cost you big when your lease is up. Tires with less than one-eighth of an inch of tread need to be replaced before the dealership’s inspection. An easy trick to get an idea of whether your car needs new tires is the “penny test.” Simply place a penny in the tread of each tire with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If the top of Lincoln’s head shows, it’s time for new tires. To get the most life out of your leased car’s tires from the get-go, check tire pressure regularly and rotate your tires about every six months. When your lease end date draws near, do a full check on all tires and replace any that show cuts, cracks or bulges in the sidewalls or treads. Purchasing new tires may seem expen-
sive, but paying for them to be replaced by the dealership will likely cost you even more. It’s in the details Before you hand over the keys for inspection, make an effort to get the vehicle looking and working exactly as it did when you drove it off the lot. Check that all features, including the sound system, keyless entry, windows and any other components, work properly and that all extras, from luggage racks to the spare tire cover, are accounted for. Though these extras may seem insignificant compared to the vehicle itself, the leasing company will check every single aspect of the vehicle when you return it. To give your lease a good-as-new appearance, consider having the vehicle detailed before inspection. Turning over a vehicle that has already been thoroughly cleaned
will make for an easier and less costly trade-in. By taking advantage of the tips above, you’ll skip the headaches when it comes to turning in a leased car.

ROCK THE VOTE! MEET THE CANDIDATES VYING FOR AVENTURA’S CITY COMMISSION By Lisa Overing - Aventura Digest
OCTOBER • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10
How much do you know about how Aventura really functions? If you can only fill a thimble with your knowledge of local civics and politics, it’s time to school yourself on how the city of excellence works and choose the candidates who best represent your beliefs and hopes for the future in the municipal election on November 6, 2012. Aventura has a Commission-Manager form of government, whereby the city commission functions as an elected, legislative branch and the city manager functions as the executive branch. The city manager oversees daily city operations, administers the city’s service providers, prepares long range plans, and implements policies enacted by the city commissioners. The mayor is the ceremonial leader of the city, presiding over commission meetings but casting a vote as an equal member of the commission. Aventura has seven commissioners. These commissioners enact ordinances and laws, adopt resolutions authorizing actions by the city, review plans for the development, and establish the policies governing the city. The composition of Aventura’s city commission is getting ready to change, as three seats are up for re-election with two commissioners subject to term limits. The city manager, Eric Soroka, remains, as does the sitting mayor, Susan Gottlieb, and three city commissioners: Luz Urbaez Weinberg; Billy Joel; and Michael Stern. Seven candidates are vying for these three commission seats. They’ve pressed the flesh at condominium meetings for several months, shaking hands and
discussing their qualifications to run for office and their positions on hot community issues, including a charter high school, property taxes, traffic congestion and red light cameras at major intersections. Candidates running for seat 1 must reside north of the Lehman Causeway. In this race, Sergio Vuguin challenges incumbent commissioner Teri Holzberg for her seat. Aventura commissioner Bob Diamond termed out and cannot run again for seat 3, where candidates must reside south of the Lehman Causeway. Rosa Naccarato and Howard Weinberg are competing for Diamond’s former seat. Like Diamond, Commissioner Zev Auerbach also termed out and cannot run for re-election as commissioner at large for seat 5, which has no geographic restrictions other than residing within the Aventura city limits. Voters can choose one of three candidates to replace Auerbach: Enbar Cohen; Ian Llobregat; or Gary Pyott. For whom will you cast your vote? Aventura Digest and South Florida Sun Times interviewed the candidates to help you decide who best represents your vision for Aventura. All candidates were asked the same questions. Some of their answers were edited for brevity. TERI HOLZBERG Age: Not disclosed. Status: Widowed. Hometown: “Brooklyn, New York. But I feel like Aventura is my hometown.” Years Living In Aventura: “I have lived in Aventura for 27 years. Prior to that, I resided nearby in Highland Lakes for 20
years.” Education: “I have a two year degree from Brooklyn College.” Current Occupation: “I have served on the city commission for over five years. I know every nook and cranny of this city. My (late) husband, Harry Holzberg, was one of the first city commissioners of Aventura. Prior to my retirement, I was an HR director for an electronics firm.” Hobby: “I enjoy reading and I have nine grandchildren.” Favorite Quote: “I don’t have one.” Key To Success: “Listen. You are never too old to learn. I have learned so much on the city commission over these years.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “We have to go through the school board. You just can’t go ahead and start a high school here because we have no property and we have no money. While it’s a good idea, you need seven or eight acres and $40 to 50 million. I think Krop is a great high school. We have wonderful teachers. Our graduates go onto the finest, top schools in this country. I am so proud of them.” On Taxes: “Right now, we have the lowest property taxes in Miami-Dade County. We privatize many services and have a balanced budget.” On Red Light Cameras: “I think it is a great idea. I’m 100 percent for it.” Biggest Problem In Aventura: “Traffic. We’re on US1. But we have a good police department that stays on top of the traffic.” Why I’m Running: “It’s important to continue what I started over five years ago on the commission. I want to make sure the new library is finished. We’re opening up a new town center in Aventura and I
want to see it happen. I want to help this city for another four years, knowing what I know. I have been to every city commission meeting since 1996.” My Hope For The City’s Future: “I hope we continue to thrive and have a good economy. Opening up the new town center should help and attract new business. Let’s stay on this path. I’m proud of Aventura.” SERGIO VUGUIN Age: 43 Status: Married Hometown: “Buenos Aires, Argentina.” Years Living In Aventura: “I have lived here for 11 years, since 2001.” Education: “Bachelor’s degree.” Current Occupation: “I am a teacher. I am a Physical Education teacher at a charter school in Broward County.” Hobby: “Sports. My favorite sports are tennis and soccer. I used to coach soccer in Sunny Isles Beach.” Favorite Quote: “I don’t really have one.” Key To Success: “Be patient. Keep trying. Never give up.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “2,000 families need a high school here, in Aventura. I am a teacher and I support the idea of a high school in Aventura. I know how hard it is to have 45 kids in a classroom, which does happen in Krop. That makes it impossible to transfer learning, sometimes. I think the city needs to find a way and solution for everyone. We have two excellent middle/ elementary schools, then most kids go to Krop or Mourning. Teachers should have no more than 25 kids in each class. Now,

the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. How Do Leaks Happen? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. Is Mold Making Your Home Toxic? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. What Is Mold? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. Goodbye, Mold Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced.
Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition with new materials. Ozone Treatment If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1ST PRIORITY RESTORATION: They Will Take care of The Problem From A to Z 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, sanitize it and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-tofinish, 24-hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its pre-loss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors in reducing or eliminating structural damage. Disaster does not knock at the door—it occurs unexpectedly. 1st Priority’s goal is to respond quickly and restore your home or business with the least amount of inconvenience to you.

to accommodate their residents with these outings. Recent outings have included places like attending professional baseball games as a way to get out, have some fun and cheer on their favorite team, picnics at Miramar Regional Park, a trip to Butterfly World and even a trip to the movie theater to catch a flick. The quality of life for seniors in our facility is important and the activities designed by
our activities director for the seniors to participate in to enhance their emotional, physical, mental and social well-being are usually always created with this in mind. Azalea Gardens Assisted-Living Resort is focused on carrying out these diverse, therapeutic and enjoyable activities to help improve the quality of life for their residents and to enhance the well-being facility overall.

individuals and be fun for groups as well. Where some residents may enjoy crafts and singing, they may dislike gardening and exercise. Others may love trivia and reminiscing, but this could become too repetitious for others. The creative and fun part of an activity director’s job can help to balance for them some of the stress they deal with trying to come up with a variety of activities that please the most people. It can be particularly difficult to come up with, and always have readily available, activities to meet everyone’s mood, whim or preference on a daily basis. So it is a formidable challenge to keep all our residents satisfied. When our activity director constructs activities to involve more therapy that looks more like fun than therapy, the benefits can be multiplied. Many of the activities incorporate using the outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful gardens, fish ponds, gazebo’s and much more. Greg Anderson, President and Owner of Timeless Life Care commented that “Nature is a uniquely powerful tool used to help our residents feel alive and strong”. For some later stage Alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers sensory activities that stimulate and provide pleasure are most beneficial. An activity like this might be finger painting, or working with clay. Some Alzheimer’s patients need only to feel the clay or paint through their fingers, feeling the texture, seeing the colors, watching it move through their fingers, to experience therapeutic benefits. Aroma Therapy and Spa Day is an activity where they incorporate different smells, with stimulating body in hand massages. Parties are great fun for Azalea Gardens to get many residents involved and introduce a theme on a large scale involving decorations game prizes, foods
revolved around the theme, music and entertainers too. Some of the more popular party themes used in ALF activities are the holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, Easter and Thanksgiving, but also Valentine’s Day, Independence Day, Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and even luau’s or fashion shows are great ways for residents to let loose and have some fun. Recently Azalea Gardens hosted a white theme party that was a huge hit that brought the families, staff and residents together. Activities that appeal to individuals as well as groups are games and crafts. Some of the more popular games that are liked enough to include quite regularly on an activities calendar are bingo, reminiscing activities, trivia, paper crafts, coloring pages, clay crafts, matching games, word games, and puzzles. These can be activities easily adapted to residents of varying participation levels or used as in room and one-on-one activities. Activities beyond games and crafts that can get seniors up and moving a little more are exercise classes, even wheelchair exercises, Wii bowling tournaments, and some other video games good for coordination building and movement. Activities like travel videos, sing-alongs on CD or DVD’s, audiobooks and music programs to explore musical instruments, are also very welcome to most people looking to do something less ordinary. Field trips can be some of the best activities to refresh the residents. Stretching their legs for a couple of hours doing some shopping at the Dollar Store or Walmart, or picnics at the local park, trips to the zoo, museum or a local event can be all that’s needed to cheer a brooding bunch. Sometimes something as simple as taking the residents on a scenic tour bus ride can be very enjoyable and relaxing to them. Several months ago Azalea Gardens purchased a brand-new 14 person shuttle bus

these schools are good schools right now but they could be better. Perhaps Krop could expand as a solution, as the school commissioner for MiamiDade County said. Let’s find a solution for the community, not just one person.” On Taxes: “They are the lowest in the whole county and I want to keep it that way. Now, creating a new high school will not increase our taxes. Local parents want to have part of the school bond, if passed, for a high school in our area for this problem.” On Red Light Cameras: “Half of the city loves the cameras. Half of the city hates them. My wife got a ticket. The cameras present money to the city. Of course you should stop, but you should be able to make a right if you are in the right lane (at Lehman) if there is no traffic. If you don’t, everyone behind you gets really upset (honking). Biggest Problem In Aventura: “This is a beautiful city and there are no big problems, but I do talk to people. Flooding is a problem and some streets are hard to walk, just from rain. At Promenade Shops during rain, you cannot get out of your car.” Why I’m Running: “I am not a politician but I have a commitment to my community. I have experience walking around the city, seeing the problems. Now, Aventura is great but we still need to upgrade. More families are moving here and I will continue working for them. I walk our streets. I shop here. I know my city. We need a bike path around Turnberry Circle. People on the path with strollers and small children complain about bikers. Then bikers ride in the street and risk injury.
We also need a bike path over Lehman Causeway so there are no accidents. We need little updates to this city. That is why I am running.” My Hope For The City’s Future: “I am a simple citizen who loves Aventura. I work as a teacher from 7:30 to 5. Whoever sits in this chair needs to work and compromise with the residents they represent. That means all of the residents, not just a few. I want to see more people vote in our elections. In Aventura, we have 16,000 voters, but only 4,000 vote. We need people to care. In Argentina, if you do not vote, you are arrested. We need more connection in our community and more communications. We have a beautiful art center now, but not enough people use it because they don’t know about it. We need facilities that are for everyone, like movies in the park more often. We did this in Sunny Isles Beach.” ROSA NACCARATO Age: 49 Status: Single Hometown: “I was born in Calabria, Italy and immigrated to the United States in 1965 to MiamiNorland, now Miami Gardens.” Years Living In Aventura: “18 years.” Education: “I graduated from Broward Community College and majored in the court reporting curriculum.” Current Occupation: “I have been a court reporter for 30 years.” Hobby: “I love traveling. I also enjoy cooking and biking around Aventura. I am a good Italian cook and make a great pizza. My Dad had Tony’s Pizza.” Favorite Quote: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt Key To Success: “Be dedicated. Anyone can succeed if they apply
themselves and work hard. I have learned a lot just from endeavoring. No guts, no glory – I believe that.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “I don’t believe the city could afford to build it on their own. It’s a financial issue. I think the superintendent got all the parents to understand that there would be another high school in Northeast Dade, not necessarily Aventura, if they support the school bond referendum, which I am in favor of.” On Taxes: “I think we live in one of the most economical cities in the county. 1.726 – I don’t know anyone with a millage rate that low.” On Red Light Cameras: “They are life saving. We have a lot of runners. There’s been a great improvement since they were installed, motivating everyone to follow the law.” Biggest Problem In Aventura: “The biggest problem is traffic and we have no access to public transportation, no rail systems. We don’t want to stop people from coming but we need to get cars off the road and find ways to improve commuter services. The shuttle proposal, itself, is not enough.” Why I’m Running: “I have lived here 18 years. I own my home. I have a business background, a clean slate, and an open mind. I owe nothing and am indebted to no one. I am committed to maintaining our excellence. I worked with FPL to add palms around the interior of their area and beautify. There are pedestrian beacons coming for the crosswalk on Williams Island Blvd. and I brought attention to that problem. I have always worked with the community.”

Dual-enrollment programs jump-start students’ careers cally and professionally prepared high school students, arming them with tools and resources that can improve their college and career decisions,” says Steve Pappageorge, dean of the College of Continuing Education, New Programs and Outreach at DeVry University. “Programs like DeVry University’s Advantage Academy can help remove barriers to college access while introducing students to career opportunities in high-demand fields.” Triplets Simeon, Sydney and Shea Spivey can attest to the value of dualenrollment programs. Each of the incoming high school seniors is deep in college planning mode and currently enrolled in Advantage Academy. Columbus City Schools (CCS) and DeVry University cover their tuition costs, so they can graduate from high school with two years of higher education to put toward fouryear degree programs without incurring student debt. “Advantage Academy has helped me become more familiar with the college experience and realize all of the benefits it offers,” says Simeon Spivey. “My siblings and I hope to attend colleges on the East Coast, and we feel more confident knowing we’ll be applying with associate degrees under our belts.” When they graduate in June 2013, the Spivey triplets will be two years ahead of their peers academically. By 2018, approximately 63 percent of the 47 million U.S. jobs will require workers with some postsecondary education. Dual-enrollment programs provide high school students with an effective onramp to college and career success, helping to close the gap between students’ knowledge and the skills needed to achieve professional success in a globally competitive economy.

(ARA) - In today’s globally competitive economy, a college degree is increasingly becoming a critical factor in attaining career success. Yet, as of October 2011, only 68 percent of the year’s high school graduates had enrolled in a college or university, even though the national unemployment rate of high school graduates is nearly twice as high as that of college graduates - 7.9 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Addressing the need for more collegeand employment-ready high school graduates, many policymakers, educators and researchers promote dualenrollment programs as an effective vehicle for building a workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a 21st century economy. Dual-enrollment programs allow high school students to jump-start their postsecondary education and career by enrolling in college courses before they graduate, earning both high school and college credits in the process. DeVry University, for example, launched its Advantage Academy in 2004 to improve college access for high school students with limited financial resources. In two academic years and one summer session, students can earn an associate degree in a high-growth career field while they finish high school. Eligible high school students in the public school systems in Chicago, Atlanta and Columbus, Ohio may enroll to earn their associate degree in health information technology, network system administration or Web graphic design. Graduates of the program can either enter the workforce or enroll in a bachelor’s degree program at DeVry University or another institution. “Dual-enrollment programs help meet a growing need for more academi-

I coach little league baseball. I coach my boys. I have three kids.” Favorite Quote: “Well, for the past year, all my kids keep saying is, ‘Vote for my Daddy!’ That’s my favorite quote.” Key To Success: “Always focus on doing the right thing, as difficult as it may seem.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “We had a very productive meeting with the superintendent. I support the $1.2 billion bond. As commissioner, my duty will be to push the school board to build a new high school as close to Aventura as possible to solve the overcapacity problem. But I will not support a tax increase in our millage rate or eminent domain for property. I will push the school board to use the bond money for a school and my children will attend it. It won’t be funded by our city, it will
be funded by the school board and will increase everyone’s property value.” On Taxes: “1.7 mills is the lowest in South Florida and I will not support any tax increases. I have a proven record of lowering taxes. I was vice mayor of Surfside and lowered taxes there for the first time in 10 years. I reduce taxes and improve services.” On Red Light Cameras: “They save lives and reduce accidents. Aventura Charter School of Excellence (ACES) receives funding, a small part from that. The first $100,000 (from the red light camera revenue) goes directly to education and that’s fine. Cameras definitely generate money to maintain services without raising taxes in addition to their most important function, which is saving lives.” Biggest Problem In Aventura: “There are no very big problems; it’s amazing. But the biggest problem is traffic. It is a double edged sword. Everyone complains about traffic but they don’t complain about low taxes. Revenue comes to this city from condominiums (property taxes) and the mall, both of which create traffic. We need to find creative solutions to take cars off the street with shuttles to the tri-rail. The proposal is to shuttle employees from tri-rail to the hospital and shoppers to the mall.” Why I’m Running: “I am the most qualified candidate from actual experience and education. This is not a passing fancy. I believe in local government. I was raised to give back to my community. One way is serving my community as a public official and I’m good at it.” My Hope For The City’s Future: “Because of term limits, just about every seat (on the commission)
will be new in the next two years. I want us to transition effectively to maintain a city of excellence. Services will remain high, crime will remain low, and taxes will not go up. I will make sure the new library opens in calendar year 2013.” ENBAR COHEN Age: 24 Status: Single Hometown: “Aventura is my hometown! I was also on the board. I have a non-profit background with several organizations, including Haitian relief efforts.” Hobby: “I enjoy basketball. I am an avid Heat fan. I also do a lot of volunteer work.” Favorite Quote: Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” Key To Success: “I have learned to be patient, not reactive. I listen to all sides.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “I am a graduate of the high school that our residents complain about. I know it has overcapacity. I used to be in the lunchroom unable to get lunch before the period ended because it was crowded. But I’m not so sure about a charter school. The $1.2 billion bond looks like it will be passed and I hope it will be approved. It will appropriate funds for a high school in Northeast

I enjoyed interviewing all the candidates running for city commissioner in Aventura’s municipal election on November 6. While the pundits speculate about the presidential race, which is likely the most important election of my lifetime of 49 years, we overlook how important it is to become involved in local politics and how the neighbors we elect can influence our standard of living. The democratic process is alive and well in Aventura, with concerned citizens opining about issues that are near and dear to their hearts for months now. I live in Aventura parttime, spending some time in Hidden Bay and the rest in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. I was startled when I came upon a petition in my condo mailroom for a charter high school and realized there are a lot of parents interested in having their children continue the high quality education they receive at Aventura Charter School of Excellence (ACES). I think everyone understands that we just can’t opt to build a charter high school, no matter how appealing the idea may be. It takes millions and millions of dollars and a parcel of land that we just don’t have. That doesn’t mean that the demand for a new high school of some kind should be arbitrarily dismissed or delayed. Everyone should be interested in having a local high school that can deal with Aventura’s booming population of youngsters, not just the parents of teenagers. I have heard mixed voices about Dr. Michael M. Krop High School. Several neighbors are very pleased with Krop and downplay the overcapacity problem. Others are ready to move from Aventura lock, stock and barrel to be closer to schools like Pinecrest and an environment that may be less prone to drug problems, should one exist, somewhere. That’s really the biggest complaint I have heard about Krop, and in Krop’s defense, drugs are a problem in high
schools across our country. But propping up Krop’s recent crop of graduates accepted into top schools isn’t the best rationale for the school remaining the top choice for Aventura residents. While certainly a noteworthy accomplishment, most every high school in the United States can cite graduates that go onto Yale or some top university; that is not unique to Krop. Frankly, if Aventura or Northeast Dade had a high school with the standards of its charter elementary school, my family wouldn’t live parttime in Mississippi. We’d relocate full-time to Aventura, comfortable with the choice we made for our 14year-old son’s education. The lack of an acceptable high school is the ONLY thing that holds us back. Our boy attends a public high school in Mississippi, and we’re not entirely pleased about that school, either, in spite of its fine instructors. But with the mixed opinions on Krop and the jury still out on Mourning, it just doesn’t advocate making a change. Not for my family. And we’re not the only parents with these concerns. There are thousands and thousands of us. Most don’t say anything, though; they just move or send their children somewhere miles away to a school that they wouldn’t attend otherwise. This problem impacts Aventura’s property values, regardless of whether you are the parent of a teenager, a young single person, or a retired couple. Having another high school, another public high school, for Aventura’s teenagers isn’t just about the “snob” appeal of living in the Aventura bubble. Kids have to be shuttled back and forth constantly and parents of teenagers have enough stress as teeny-bopper taxi drivers. Those who say the high school
choices are fine in Aventura take for granted that ACES is full and has a lottery for admission. If ACES never existed, certainly these kids would go elsewhere. But at what expense to parents? At what expense to the quality of life of the children involved, the kids who can be our community’s future leaders? All of the candidates running for city commissioner have heard our voices about high school choices. They hear us loud and clear. It’s so intriguing that Aventura has three candidates for commissioner who emigrated from other countries: Israel; Argentina; and Italy, with most of the other candidates hailing from the greater New York City vicinity. Most people who live in South Florida are what I call firstgeneration South Floridians, adults who relocated for their careers or retirement or sunbathing or horseracing preferences. It would be so wonderful to have more second and third and fourth-generation South Floridians. With another high school, we might just be able to achieve that. 33180 and 3 3 1 6 0 should be able to be zip codes for life.

Dade. I want to facilitate a series of meetings and a task force to discuss the problem of overcrowding and once the bond passes, I will find a way to alleviate the overcrowding by either: creating another school, but not a charter school, either near Aventura in Northeast Dade or within Aventura, itself, or have an extension and expansion of Krop. I understand the underlying bureaucracy of the school system and know who to work with.” On Taxes: “Aventura hasn’t raised taxes in 17 years and we still have the lowest millage rate at 1.72. We can continue with that tax rate. We get a big bang for our buck and have great curb appeal. Residents will not see a tax increase, but they will see an increase in property value that will be reflected in their tax bill.” On Red Light Cameras: “They definitely save lives. I run the Aventura Circle every morning and was almost hit by a car. They shouldn’t be at every intersection like “big brother.” But they are a deterrent and people now make cautious stops. I think an effort to stop, then roll through is fine. I am not for the expansion of more cameras. Accidents should be reviewed every six months and then determine if the cameras are in the right places. I am not for speed cameras, though.” Biggest Problem In Aventura: “Civic engagement and participation. Get involved. If you are paying taxes, you should have a stake in what’s happening. I want to make sure everyone is informed and involved.” Why I’m Running: “I’m running because I want to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas. I think it is important to have someone from a non-profit background on the commission, someone with my background (as we have many business professionals). I humbly ask for your vote.” My Hope For The City’s Future: “I want to see the community more enjoyed, property values to increase, and a safe community. Marketing.” Current Occupation: “Exotic car consultant for high line autos like Ferrari, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce…I specialize in getting the very first cars that come out.” Hobby: “I am a fitness enthusiast, but naturally, not with a gym. I enjoy outdoor parks without gym memberships. I am involved in BarStarzz, which is fitness and calisthenics without gym equipment for kids, like monkey bars. I am their community outreach coordinator in Miami.” Favorite Quote: ‘Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you do, you will be successful.” Key To Success: “Honesty. Transparency. Integrity. My business is about credibility and my reputation.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “I am neutral on the situation. I have heard both sides. I’m for it if we can do it without raising taxes. The $1.2 billion bond over 30 years will only raise taxes $10 a year for the first 10 years, then go up to $27 a year for the remaining 20 years. The bond will improve school systems but I do not think it is specifically for the high school. It is to improve facilities, expand and add classrooms, not to build a charter school. On Taxes: “I won’t raise taxes. I want to keep them low for residents with a beautiful city and a high quality of life.” On Red Light Cameras: “I think it is a great idea. Some people don’t like it. For Aventura, it is a good way to maintain traffic control. I support them.” Biggest Problem In Aventura: “Honestly, I think there are no issues in Aventura and it is great the way it is. The charter high school idea is not a short term issue to solve and is not feasible at this time.” Why I’m Running: “I want to get involved in politics and believe in starting in my backyard. I want to get people under 35 involved. We would have newer ideas and a healthier lifestyle. I want to promote more outdoor equipment in Aventura. I will represent everyone and am also representing the growing number of younger people moving into the city.” My Hope For The City’s Future: “People know Aventura because of the mall. It is beautiful. I want to promote beautiful things in the city and keep crime rates low. The city manager and police have done a great job.”

On Red Light Cameras: “That was initially very controversial because it was looked at as a revenue producer versus a safety mechanism. I believe it has prevented accidents; that is why it was adopted in many cities. Yes, there is a penalty for running a red light, but it is a lesser penalty than an accident and I believe we were successful in reducing traffic accidents in Aventura and, therefore, reducing fatalities.” Biggest Problem In Aventura: “I don’t really believe we have any major problems in Aventura. Our goal is to continue providing excellent services:

There is a major difference between listening and hearing.” On Building A High School In Aventura: “It is a great concept but not practical at this time. Those who talk about a high school want it operated like the charter elementary, with Aventura residents having the first opportunity (for admission). If we had a high school, I believe it should be open to all high school age children. I don’t believe those paying into the tax base demonstrate a need for a charter high school in Aventura. There are opportunities for a quality education at existing local schools without raising taxes to Aventura residents.” On Taxes: “I believe our current city manager has worked diligently in past budgets and the current fiscal budget to provide excellent services without raising taxes and we have the lowest taxes of any municipality in Miami-Dade County.”

We have a great city.” Why I’m Running: “I believe I am the most experienced candidate to serve the needs of the entire community. I’ve been a resident and involved in the city for a long time and want to extend my service to the city. I was originally the chairman of the school advisory committee for the charter school. I also spent seven years on the community advisory board overseeing programs and common areas for the city. Over 90 percent of the residents here live in some condo or homeowner association. No one has more experience with association living than me as this is my profession.” My Hope For The City’s Future: “I hope to build on the excellent programs and services that we have, offer programs and services to all ages: seniors; children; and adults. I want to work with our police department. They do a great job, but there is always room for improvement for citizen safety.”

You may have instantly received news at the monster full moon in Aries last month, September 29, but if not, it will come through soon. Taurus (April 20- May 20) As the month begins, you may have noticed that those around you have
been more fragile and excitable than usual. A lot of challenging developments were coming up as a result of the full moon of September 29. The first few weeks will be important Gemini (May 21 - June 20) Last month may have ended on a jarring note. The difficult full moon of September 29 may have delivered news about a friend, or if you’re single, someone you recently met and are dating. Or, if you have children, one or both

may have been on your mind. Either the person who was the topic of the full moon was in crisis, or, conversely, caused a crisis for you.
Aries 7 degrees, a sign that blends well yours. If you were born within five days of July 29, you were in that group that was to reap some beneficial results.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22) September likely ended on a jarring note for you as cosmic storms were moving in and creating havoc in many places, especially for a cardinal sign like yours. A monstrous full moon in Aries on September 29 lit your house of career status and reputation (tenth house). That full moon was in hard angle to Pluto in your house of competitors / detractor.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) The full moon of last month, in Aries, 7 degrees, that appeared September 29 might have brought you an unwanted surprise, most likely about money. The full moon will still be strong and possibly delivering news in the first few weeks of the month.
Leo (July 23- August 22) The month opens with emotions at a high pitch. You are one of the more fortunate signs, for the monstrous full moon, September 29, occurred in
Libra (Sept. 23 - October 22) You have just come through a very difficult full moon on September 29 (plus or minus four days), which still exerts strong pull in the first few weeks of October. This full moon appeared in Aries, in your seventh house of partners who are aligned with you, and also people that are
directly opposed to you. Scorpio (Oct. 23 - November 21) For some reason, Saturn has received a bad name among people who have not studied astrology closely. If you were to do so, you would see that Saturn conjunct the Sun, as you will have in the coming three years, could help you materialize a dream dear to you in the way no other planet can do as effectively as he can do. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - December 21) You ended September on a troubling note, as the monstrous moon of September 29 was not likely an easy one. It lit your house of romance, so you may have seen a side of character of someone you are dating that you found troublesome, or it may have been that your sweetheart was in crisis and needed your assistance. Capricorn (Dec. 22 - January 19) You are a cardinal sign,
considered very active, for the cardinal signs are associated with the north, south, east, west points, and they define direction for the rest of the signs. In addition to Capricorn, the other cardinal signs are Cancer, Aries, and Libra. Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) The difficult full moon of last month, September 29, appeared in Aries, a sign that blends well with yours, so you may have been a bystander to others’ difficulties and were put in the role of helper, rather than the protagonist in the story. It’s possible that you experienced difficulty in travel. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) You are a highly creative sign, and although entrepreneurial ventures truly intrigue you, you tend not to have to concern yourself with only financial questions. Lately, however, it seems that the balance of your daily activities has tipped much too much in the direction of financial management.
Outsmart hunger with 3 easy tips (ARA) - As the air turns crisp, it can be tempting to indulge in delicious food favorites and hide those few extra pounds under a sweater. But you shouldn’t have to choose between sticking with your weight management plan and enjoying satisfying and delicious foods. There are some easy and tasty tricks to having your cake and eating it too. “For those looking to manage their weight, protein and fiber filled foods are helpful to feeling full longer. Typical protein options like Greek yogurt and eggs are not good sources of fiber. One option, Kellogg’s Special K Protein Plus cereal, has 10 grams of protein and also three grams of fiber. Special K also offers tasty meal bars and shakes to take with you on the go to help avoid those tempting cupcakes at the office,” says registered dietitian Sylvia Melendez-Klinger. Melendez-Klinger shares her tips
on ways to outsmart hunger: • Get those greens. Filling up on low-calorie, nutrient-dense vegetables is a great way to incorporate vitamins and minerals into your diet - and help fill you up at the same time. Not a salad lover? Integrating veggies into your diet can be as easy as topping your sandwich with spinach and peppers or baking chicken with carrots and onions. • Protein packs a punch. Choosing foods with protein will help you feel full longer. “I love options like Special K Protein cereal, bars and shakes, which provide a winning combination of 10 grams of protein and up to five grams of fiber to help you satisfy hunger longer,” comments Melendez-Klinger. • Pump up the produce. Adding seasonal produce to each meal is another flavorful and delicious way to watch the scale. While summer may be best known for bringing fresh
produce options to the table, fall ushers in a new group of colorful and nutrient-dense varieties of its own, like apples, yams, beets, pumpkins and carrots. Burn some extra calories by walking to your local farmer’s market to buy fresh, local options. Special K Protein products can be found now in the snack, cereal and sports nutrition aisles of grocery, convenience and drug stores nationwide. For more information about how Special K can help you outsmart hunger, visit www.SpecialK.com/ProteinEffect.

HEALTH Many adults are not aware of important vaccinations they need (ARA) - Which vaccinations should adults get? If you answered, “I don’t know,” don’t worry - you’re not alone. A new national survey of adults in the United States reveals that more than twothirds don’t know which vaccinations they need beyond just the flu shot. Adults need vaccinations not only to protect themselves from serious diseases but also to prevent spreading illnesses to their family, friends and other loved ones. Millions of Americans get sick from diseases that can be prevented by vaccines each year, causing them to miss work and leaving them unable to care for those who depend on them, including children and aging parents. Even though many diseases can now be prevented by vaccines, there are still nearly 1 million cases of shingles (which is caused by the chickenpox virus) in the United States every year, and almost one out of three people will develop shingles in their lifetime. Also, cases of whooping cough have increased significantly within the last year - there have been 26,000 cases of whooping cough reported in the
United States as of early September, which is more than twice as many reported at this time last year. To help people get the vaccinations they need, Sam’s Club is offering 10 vaccines this cold and flu season at all locations with a pharmacy. In partnership with Mollen Immunization Clinics, the retailer is providing an expanded menu of vaccines administered by registered nurses through Nov. 15. Specific vaccines include the following: • Flu - Protects against influenza (also known as the flu), which is a contagious respiratory illness • Pneumococcal - Protects against pneumococcus, which can cause several infections, such as pneumonia • Varicella - Protects against chickenpox • Herpes zoster - Protects against shingles, which is caused by the chickenpox virus • Tdap - Protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (also known as whooping cough), which is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection • HPV - Protects against human papillomavirus, which is a sexually transmitted

THE NAKED TRUTH: How to prevent baring it all due to hair loss (ARA) - Whether it’s a few extra hairs in the sink or a completely bare scalp, baldness is a common issue for many people - not just men. Balding generally refers to hair loss from your scalp, usually caused by genetics, environment, various medications or an underlying medical condition. It is often characterized with a receding hairline and thinning crown near the temples and mid-anterior scalp. The word “alopecia” is the medical term for hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia, a typical pattern of male baldness beginning at the hairline and gradually receding, is the most common form of hair loss, accounting for more than 95 percent of the cases in men. A quarter of those men start seeing signs of hair loss before they reach 21. But there are also several hundred diseases that include hair loss as a primary symptom. By age 35, two-thirds of American
men will experience some degree of noticeable hair loss, and by age 50, about 85 percent of men have significantly thinning hair. Most people dealing with baldness have hair follicles with an inherited or genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative or byproduct of testosterone. Hair follicles that are sensitive to this hormone begin to shrink, which over time shortens the lifespan of each affected hair follicle. Eventually, these follicles prevent hair from growing altogether, resulting in a bald spot. Even though baldness is perceived to be a male condition, women actually make up 40 percent of American hair loss sufferers. Hair loss in children is also more common than most people think and currently is responsible for about 3 percent of all pediatric office visits in the country. Balding can be slowed or

even stopped if caught early enough. Many experts agree the best results happen when you begin treatment as soon as possible after the hair loss begins. There are several ways to treat and handle alopecia today, most of which are indicated by the severity or progression of the disease. While some people let their baldness naturally run its course, others use hairstyles, makeup or clothing to cover the condition. There are also medications and surgical procedures available to treat and prevent hair loss, but individuals should always contact their doctor to first discuss their options before pursuing any treatment. The most popular over-thecounter (non-prescription) topical hair regrowth treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) contain minoxidil, including Rogaine. Minoxidil is not intended for frontal baldness or receding hairline.

What are postmenopausal women leaving unsaid? available treatment option and create a plan to properly manage their symptoms. Baby boomer women need to take control. To the women who led the sexual revolution, speak up! Be vocal about your vaginal health and talk to your doctor about the postmenopausal vaginal symptoms you may be experiencing. Ask About A Treatment Option If you’re experiencing postmenopausal vaginal symptoms, including vaginal itching, burning and dryness, painful intercourse, urinary urgency or painful urination, one treatment option to discuss with your doctor is ESTRING® (estradiol vaginal ring). ESTRING contains a plantbased form of estrogen, which works like your body’s natural estrogen to treat these local symptoms. Once inserted, ESTRING works to help relieve these symptoms by releasing a steady, low-dose of estradiol for a 90-day treatment period. ESTRING is inserted once for a 90-day treatment period and removed after 90 days. So after you insert one, you’re done for 90 days. You do not have to remember to insert it every day. Estrogens should be used only as long as needed. You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly (such as every 3 to 6 months) about continued use of estrogen-containing products like ESTRING. You should discuss the potential benefits and risks of ESTRING with your healthcare provider. Do not use ESTRING if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, have or have had cancer of the breast or uterus, had a stroke or heart attack, have or have had blood clots or liver problems, are allergic to any of its ingredients, or think you may be pregnant. For more information on ESTRING, please see: http://estring.com/#ISI full h t t p : / / l a b e l i n g . p f i z e r. c o m / S h o w Labeling.aspx?id=567 , including a boxed warning, and http://labeling.pfizer.com/ ShowLabeling.aspx?id=568 on Estring.com. (ARA) - Characterized as a generation who led the sexual revolution in the sixties, many baby boomer women are reluctant to talk with their partners or healthcare professionals about the conditions they’re experiencing as a result of menopause, including vaginal atrophy (a-truhfee). Why are they suffering in silence? And why has this discussion remained taboo even though it is shared by women everywhere? There is some basic information women should be aware of and an option that is available to help women relieve their postmenopausal vaginal symptoms. What is Vaginal Atrophy? As women experience menopause, their bodies produce less estrogen, a female hormone. Lower levels of estrogen can cause changes in the body, such as atrophy of the vagina and lower urinary tract. Atrophy is the thinning of these tissues. These changes typically start during and continue after menopause (or “postmenopause”). This is the time in a woman’s life when her menstrual cycle ends. Many women will be around 51 when this happens. Recognizing Symptoms Unfortunately, many postmenopausal women may not be aware that their vaginal symptoms may be related to menopause. While most postmenopausal women are aware of hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings, fewer have heard of women experiencing symptoms of vaginal atrophy. These symptoms may include vaginal burning, itching and dryness, increased urgency in urination and painful sexual intercourse. Women may find these postmenopausal vaginal symptoms difficult to discuss and may hesitate talking about some symptoms, like painful sexual intercourse. Taking Control Although more than half of postmenopausal women experience vaginal dryness, a recent online survey conducted by HealthyWomen.org and Pfizer Inc. showed that 46 percent of postmenopausal women are not aware that prescription treatments are available to help manage the postmenopausal vaginal symptoms they are experiencing. Although these treatments are not right for everyone, many women have found success managing their symptoms. It’s critical that women not only understand what they’re experiencing, but to communicate how they’re feeling to their healthcare providers so they can receive an accurate diagnosis and learn about an

(http://www.newsusa.com/ ) -A recent national survey by Fannie Mae revealed that Hispanics place more value on the idea of homeownership than all Americans, and 73 percent of Latinos believe that https:// esecure.tdbank.com/net/firsttimehome buyers/default.aspx is a good way to build wealth to pass along to their families. However, trends suggest Hispanics are more likely to lack basic financial literacy skills, which can hamper the community’s home buying and long-term financial success. The first-time home buying process can seem like a daunting experience. But with the right resources, such as TD Bank’s five-step guide for firsttime home buyers, Latinos can turn the process of buying a family home into a teachable financial experience for both themselves and their children. Here is some of TD’s advice: #1. The importance of saving: According to a recent national survey by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, nearly half of Hispanics polled revealed they do not have savings. The best way to teach children about saving is by encouraging them to do it. If they get a weekly allowance, ask them to put away 25 percent to save enough to purchase the latest video game or toy they

want. Then, explain to your children what a down payment is, and how saving for one can help reduce a home’s cost. The bigger the down payment, the smaller your home loan, therefore the lower the interest rate. #2. Budgeting and determining what you can afford: Living within your means is key to long-term financial success. Unfortunately, Hispanics are more likely to report struggling to pay their bills on time, which presumably means many Hispanics spend more than they make. It’s important to discuss budgeting at an early age with children. By reviewing your income and current monthly debts, you can determine your ideal monthly mortgage payment. From there, you will be able to narrow the focus of your house hunt to homes you can afford. #3. Understanding credit and loans: Having bad or little credit makes the goal of owning a home a struggle. To drive home the lesson about credit and loans, offer your children a loan to purchase the new shoes or outfit they want. Require them pay you back monthly with a portion of their weekly allowance.
