Brightline / Virgin Trains USA The New Aventura Stop Will Be a Major Transportation Boost For The City The $76 million in funding that was approved by the Miami-Dade Board of Commissioners on October 11th for Brightline, now also known as Virgin Trains USA, to build a railway station in Aventura seems to be a win-win situation for everyone. Not only will it enable commuters from downtown Miami to access the Aventura Mall, Aventura Hospital and local businesses and professionals, but the complement for Aventura residents will be to zip down to the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Miami Arena, Bayside and downtown offices in just minutes. The best part? No traffic and parking issues. Aventura City Manager Ronald Wasson confirms the benefits. “I believe this will be something special for Aventura,” he says “The Brightline/Aventura stop will be a major transportation boost for our city. Not only will it easily bring Brickell and the new Downtown Miamians to our businesses, retailers, restaurants and professionals, but the door opens both ways for our folks here to catch a train and hop downtown for sports and entertainment.” Wasson is very familiar with this type of commute. He formerly was the city manager of Rockville Center, a station stop on the Long Island Railroad with direct connection to New York City from the most eastern parts of the Island. This window of opportunity opened for Aventura on October 11th when the Board of Commissioners of Miami-Dade County approved $76 million to fund Virgin Trains USA, the brand name for Brightline, to build a station in Aventura. Tri-Rail had been trying to do the same

thing for a few years, but was blocked with permitting and approval issues complying with new railroad regulations. There was much discussion at that Miami-Dade Commission meeting on Oct. 11th. Based on the current $9.75 ticket cost for the Miami-to-West Palm Beach Brightline Express, Commissioner Joe Martinez felt that the fares on Brightline would be out of reach for most Miamians. Commissioner Jean Monestine, who aspires to be County Mayor in 2020, cast the passing ballot only when discussion was brought to the table to build affordable housing units along the railway path. This was an important issue for Monestine’s constituents in the North Dade area. “There’s a grave affordability housing crisis here in Miami-Dade County, “ he had said. “So many of our hardworking families literally are being priced out of their homes, their communities, and this county. We need these working people to stay. Everybody plays a role, and they fulfill a large number of jobs in our service and construction industries.” Finally, at that meeting, commissioner Rebecca Sosa said, “If we do nothing, nothing will happen. So, now is the time to start.” And it passed. Formerly known as AllAboardFlorida and now as Virgin USA, Brightline’s new Miami-to-West Palm Beach service began running on May 19, 2018, using existing FEC rail lines that run right through Aventura. The trip on Brightline takes 40 minutes from downtown to West Palm Beach, compared to 60 minutes on nearby Tri-Rail commuter trains, as opposed to

two hours driving in rush hour traffic. However, plans do not stop for Virgin Trains USA here in South Florida. This rapidly growing company has an ambitious future in mind. Plans include a Brightline / Virgin expansion for direct service from Miami to Orlando Airport by 2022. Virgin Trains currently is in negotiation with the Florida Department of Transportation to lease right-of-way along the I-4 corridor to extend the line from Orlando International Airport to Downtown Tampa with a stop that includes Walt Disney World, and also is considering an extension to Jacksonville. Think about the possibilities of how this would open up easy transportation to major parts of the state for Aventura residents. Virgin Trains USA also recently acquired XpressWest, a rail corridor that already had Federal approval. With that acquisition, there is a plan in place to begin construction on a commuter line from Las Vegas to California in the first half of 2020. Initial impressions for Brightline service by commuters are very positive. Riders have remarked about how “European” Brightline seems with its

sleek design and comfort features. They report that the trips are relaxing and comfortable. As for safety, Brightline trains operate with locomotives at both ends, so they can simply reverse direction at the end of their run. This avoids the mechanical and electrical problems that can arise from couplings, and eliminates the nuisance and hazards on the vestibules between cars. Brightline operates with high-level platforms by having a bridge plate automatically extend from the car to fill the gap. This removes the need to climb steps, getting passengers on and off the train quickly and safely. It also makes the train universally accessible. All this is Virgin Trains’ mission in order to provide clean and efficient methods of travel locally and farther for commuters and travelers. Projections for completion of the Aventura Station are one year from now. As for the possible near $10 cost of a one-way ticket, Aventura City Manager Ron Wasson was quick to ask “How much does it cost if you ride the Express lane of I-95 in rush hour?” Good thought, and we need to consider how much more is the value of a comfortable stress-free ride to work or on the way for fun?”

Braverman Eye Center Cross Linking Procedure Halts Corneal Damage Caused By Keratoconus by Marylynne Newmark

Eight years ago, when she was only 20, Dene Rorie began to experience pain in her eyes and blurry vision. Her primary care physician sent her to Dr. Dan Llewellyn, optometrist, who diagnosed her with Keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea, the clear tissue in front of the eye, slowly weakens, becomes misshapen, and bulges outward into the shape of a cone. Keratoconus can rarely be very painful and always distorts and reduces vision. Dene had the condition in both eyes. Symptoms of Keratoconus usually first appear in early teen

or young adult years, such as in the case of Dene. Its cause is unknown, but researchers suggest that the weakening of the corneal tissue that leads to Keratoconus may be due to an enzyme imbalance in the cornea that makes it more susceptible to oxidative damage. Since the condition has appeared in families such as Dene’s, susceptibility to having it may be due to an inherited gene, but not necessarily so. Because of the irritation and itching it creates, Keratoconus can also be caused or worsened by increased rubbing of the eyes. It is a chronic condition that slowly worsens and lasts a life-

time. Symptoms can include blurred vision and sensitivity to light and glare. In later stages, scarring can develop in the area of the corneal bulge, which can cause pain and further decreased vision Dr. Llewellyn advised Dene that possibly, she would need surgery to slow progression and help prevent more damage. Meanwhile, he prescribed contact lenses that could help with her vision. However, the pain persisted and her vision worsened. Then one morning last year, Dene woke up unable to see at all out of her left eye. Upon examination, Dr. Llewellyn saw

fluid build-up inside the cornea, medically termed Hydrops. Hydrops can be painful. The pain became so intense and her vision so blurred that Dene was not able to work at her hospitality job. That’s when Dr. Llewellyn sent Dene to Dr. Stanley Braverman. He treated the hydrops conservatively with medication drops, hoping that with time, the fluid buildup in the cornea would resolve, and that she would not need a corneal transplant. Fortunately, after three months, the hydrops resolved. She was offered a newer, much less invasive pro-

cedure to halt the progression of her Keratoconus. The procedure is known as Collagen Cross Linking, and it has been approved by the FDA in the United States for the last two years. She decided to go through with this surgery. In the past, corneal transplants were performed, but they were not always successful for this condition and it is very invasive surgery. Thankfully, in 2016, the FDA approved Corneal Collagen Cross Linking. The USA is the 145th country in the world to approve this procedure. It was initially studied in Dresden, Germany, and was approved there in the late 1990’s Corneal Collagen Crosslinking strengthens the cornea and halts the deteriorating progression of keratoconus. It involves the physician repeatedly instilling a specially formulated riboflavin-based medication into the eye under an ultra-violet (UV) light. The UV assists the collagen fibers in the cornea to chemically bond with each other. The result is a strengthening of the cornea. Corneal Collagen Cross-linking does not 100% correct the condition, but it does arrest progression and improves the condition in at least 50% of the treated patients, which improves quality of life. Contact lenses or prescription glasses may further help to improve the patient’s sight to the best corrected vision. As a leader in ophthalmologic research and new procedures, Dr. Braverman performs Corneal Collagen Cross-linking in a specially outfitted surgical suite in his Hollywood office. His office is the only FDA approved site in all of Broward County! With FDA approval, most insurance companies will provide coverage for a patient with a history of the problem and symptoms of its deteriorating effects. “Dr. Braverman did my right eye in January and my left eye in June,” says Dene. “My vision became so much clearer with the addition of new contacts, and I have no pain! Dr Braverman and his staff have been wonderful, so sensitive and professional,” she added, “which really helped me

What Is New At Fox Vein And Laser Experts?

Dr. Susan B. Fox, DO RPVI, FSVM is board certified in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and has been a vein and laser expert for decades. She and her staff are experts in Laser treatments.

After 20 year of treating veins and using lasers, we are always adding new and cutting edge techniques to our practice. We have been treating veins large and small with lasers, radio frequency, microphlebectomies and liquid and foam sclerosants for years. Now, many insurances are covering the foam sclerotherapy called Varithena. Varithena is a proprietary foam of an FDA approved solution Asclera which is used to close medium to large size varicose veins and venous insufficiency. Usually this is performed under ultrasound guidance with little to no down time and no cuts or incisions. The patient must use compression hose and often local compression over the vein post procedure and stay active but this a great way to treat many problematic veins. How has your practice changed in recent years? Our practice is always changing, evolving and expanding. We strive to be on the cutting edge

of new procedures, techniques and devices. In the past several years, we have been expanding and are now offering new and exciting procedures, lasers and techniques. A few years ago we added the Picoway laser which is the best laser on the market for tattoo and spot removal. It uses vibrational and light energy to break up pigment and ink in the skin and help the body to remove it quicker and with less side effects. We are able to use this on all colors of skin and ink. Our results have been amazing so far. This is especially rewarding to use on people who have a lot of venous stasis changes in their ankles and legs to help them remove some of the unsightly discoloration. We are also able to use the Picoway laser to help refine and lighten scars, rejuvenate the skin and improve fine lines and wrinkles and the signs of aging. This laser is nonablative and most people have little to no down time. As well, we offer the Gentle Max Pro laser to remove unwanted hair, treat

spider veins, help lighten sun spots and discoloration, This laser uses a cooling device so it is not very painful and can be used on most skin colors. What is micro-needling, Vivace and more? We have added an aesthetician who specializes in all kinds of facials. She is an expert in micro-needling and PRP and Stem cells for skin rejuvenation and travels the country teaching other health professionals. We offer the Vivace micro-needling device which combines microneedling with RF to help rebuild your bodies own collagen and elastin and decrease the signs of aging, minimizing enlarged pores and refining lines and wrinkles. We have also had spectacular results with acne scars and surgical scars. Your body is essentially remodeling the skin and rebuilding its own network of collagen and elastin over time. There is little to no down time in most people. This can be combined with proprietary stem cells

to help healing and rejuvenate the skin as well as the patient’s own platelet rich plasma similar to the Vampire Facial. The results are wonderful and often give the patient a more youthful glow. As well, micro-needling can be used to help regrow hair. When hair follicles are still present and the hair is thinning, we have seen fabulous results using microneedling devices and a proprietary stem cell formula or the patients own platelet rich formula to help stimulate hair growth. It usually takes several sessions but can help grow more hair where it is thinning. We offer an at home treatment to use in between the professional micro-needling sessions as well. What about Facials and other aesthetic procedures? Our aesthetician is fabulous and offers all kinds of facials including our amazing hydro facial. This helps suck out the skins impurities, uses alpha and beta hydroxy acids to brighten

the skin and lymphatic massage and electro stimulation to help refine the skins appearance. Celebrities are using it to be runway ready. Your skin will have a refreshed look afterwards. We offer a long list of facials from anti-aging, to teen, back facials, acne and extraction focused to relaxing and moisturizing facials. The aesthetician will work with each person to determine their skin care needs and help develop a treatment plan. What can I do to be ready for the Holiday Season? We offer various packages to help you look “runway ready.” One of our signature packages is to combine the Skinwave Hydrafacial with the Vivace microneedling experience and add on some stem cells to speed healing. We also offer our own proprietary skin care products which uses anti-oxidants to help the skin look and feel amazing. We can combine derma-planing

CITY NEWS Picoway has won laser of the year. It is one of the newest and best lasers for skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, spot removal, collagen building and reducing the signs of aging with no pain or down time.

FOXS Continued From Pg 10 with several of our procedures to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz from the skin to help add a beautiful glow to the complexion. Will any of my procedures be covered by insurance? If you have symptoms due to your veins or venous insufficiency then often insurance will ask the person to try conservative measures and if these don’t work in a reasonable amount of time, then they will often cover vein procedures. What about my spider veins? Usually spider veins are not covered by insurance. We offer a variety of treatments and discounted packages for spider veins. The gold standard to treat spider veins is sclerotherapy where we inject a solution into the vein and the vein gradually scars down and seals shut over several weeks. Other options

Before and 1 week after laser and Phlebectomies. that are used to treat spider veins are laser and radio frequency ablation. We offer the Candela Gentle Max Pro laser that can be used on most skin colors to remove small superficial veins.

What Else Do They Provide? Fox Vein & Laser Experts now has an aesthetician on staff and are one of the first facilities to offer Vivace Microneedling, RF for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, scar reduction, decrease in stretch marks and more. This can be done before an event to make your skin camera ready and give you that extra lift and glow. It can be combined with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). Come try it today and be one of the first to experience this amazing procedure and start looking younger without looking filled or fake. It will rebuild your collagen and elastin and make your skin younger and more beautiful. As well, for tiny veins such as the ones on the face, we offer Vein Gogh. Vein Gogh uses energy to heat the vein and seal it shut. It can be used on all skin colors as well.

HOW CAN WE FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT SPECIAL OR NEW PROCEDURES YOU ARE OFFERING? Like us on social media @foxveinandlaserexperts Or call us at (954) 965-4922 or visit our web page

“Symphony In Lights” Dazzles Shoppers Every Night By Marylynne Newmark

For the fourteenth year in a row, The Village at Gulfstream Park has outdone itself with an annual extravaganza, this year Introducing its” Symphony in Lights”. On Opening Night, November 9th, thousands gathered to enjoy the splendor of the season kickoff. Aside from the spectacle of dancing lights synchronized to fabulous holiday music, there were live performances, warm welcomes… and of course, Santa! Emcee for the evening was Lynn Martinez, news anchor at WSVN-Channel 7, media sponsor for the event. She introduced principal representatives of the other sponsors that include Florida Power & Light, the City of Hallandale Beach and the YMCA of South Florida. At 6:30 on the 9th, triumphant seasonal sounds of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra heralded the flip of the switch for the magnificent “Symphony in

Lights”, a dazzling display of lights in motion choreographed to the music. Holiday music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra was selected because of its powerfully strong tempo, which added to the drama of the lights reflecting off the trees in The Village. During the evening, firstnighters enjoyed Christmas carol renditions from various choral groups, including the 50member Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, the 60-member Hallandale Magnet Marching Band, and a local band called Pulse, who performed a crowdpleasing mixture of music from top 40s to Latin to seasonal. That was then, but “Symphony in Lights” is ongoing. The extravaganza will continue with its synchronized music every night during the holiday season thru December 31st. Gulfstream principals reported that more than 250,000 LED

lights are covering the trees and nearby buildings in The Village. Recognized for their energy efficiency and cost savings, LED lighting has proven to be a safe and efficient way for excellent lighting, and has been encouraged for general and commercial use during the past few decades. “Using energy efficient LED lighting is a good way for homeowners and businesses to lower their costs,” says Juliet Roulhac, Director of External Affairs for FPL, “especially now during the holidays when bills can be higher with all the extra decorative lighting.” So obviously, this was a great choice for Gulfstream with the massive amount of energy that will be required during the next two months. “By using the LED option,” Roulhac says,“ FPL is able to provide billing that is about 30% lower than the national average.” She adds that FPL encourages their customers to save money with LED lighting

all year. As anticipated in previous years, thousands of South Florida residents and visitors are expected to participate and enjoy the spectacular display of lights and music throughout the holiday season, right up thru New Year’s Eve. “Gulfstream is a staple of our vibrant community,” says Greg Chavarria, city manager of Hallandale Beach. “Local festivals like “Symphony in Lights” help promote community unity and local pride. That way, businesses and residents alike are the beneficiaries. Sheryl A. Woods, CEO of YMCA of South Florida, agrees. “This extraordinary event gives organizations such as the “Y” an opportunity to introduce the YMCA as a community partner with the same goals of providing fun-filled activities for the entire family.” Of course, the merchants and restaurateurs at Gulfstream love

events like this. Mary Lee, owner at Christine Lee’s, a very popular Pan-Asian restaurant located in Gulfstream Village, is delighted with this wonderful splash of holiday warmth. She says, “We love being part of the Gulfstream community. Events such as this spotlight Gulfstream Village and generate tremendous traffic for the businesses. It’s a way for people who have never visited Gulfstream before to be introduced to our merchants and restaurants, and for regulars to enjoy the festivities.” This fun holiday happening is a “must” for visiting. Gulfstream Village is a great place to spend the day. There is much to see, shops to visit, activities to explore and a great choice of eating establishments to enjoy. The Village at Gulfstream at this time of year, with all its glamour and glitz, can be described in one phenomenal word… SPECTACULAR! Be sure to get your share of enjoying it.

The Aventura International Film Series continues with Working Woman on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The film is a timely and devastating story expertly told by long time feminist filmmaker Michal Aviad and stars Liron Ben Shlush as Orna. This beautifully performed drama shares the everyday struggles of being a female in the workplace. Life at work becomes unbearable for Orna. Her boss promotes her, while making inappropriate advances. Her rapid rise through the ranks and her increasing financial success seem to parallel a pattern of predatory behavior which ultimately brings her career and marital relationship to the brink. Her husband struggles to keep his new restaurant afloat, and Orna becomes the main breadwinner for their three children. When her world is finally shattered, she must pull herself together to fight, in her own way, for her job and a sense of self-worth. Not rated, this film is from Israel with English subtitles. The Aventura International Film Series presented by the City of Aventura is hosted by Shelly Isaacs who introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Isaacs is founder, programmer and commentator for South Florida’s popular Café Cinematheque International programs. Isaacs holds a master’s degree in Media Ecology Studies from New York University, where he served as an adjunct professor in cultural studies. Presently, he teaches foreign-language film appreciation in the Lifelong Learning Society at

Florida Atlantic University and at Florida International University. He is the film expert for Celebrity Cruise Lines during their annual voyage to the Cannes International Film Festival as well as on

other scheduled film-related cruises throughout the world. Tickets are $12.Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. LIFESTYLE How To Turn Your Midlife Crisis Into A Life-Changing Adventure Some people think of themselves as stuck in the mud at middle age, feeling as though they’re going nowhere after their children have grown up, graduated and moved on. These people could be suffering from a “midlife crisis,” a well-known term for what some health professionals believe is a real psychological affliction, not a cultural myth. Studies show a high percentage of adults over the age of 50 have experienced a period of emotional turmoil in middle age in which they have a strong desire for change. Sandra A. Miller (, author of Trove: A Woman’s Search for Truth and Buried Treasure, thinks those suffering from a midlife crisis can overcome it by

struggling right now with what I call a crisis of the soul,” Miller says. “They might have achieved the many trappings of a successful life, but they still don’t feel fulfilled on a deeper level.” Miller offers three keys to shifting the mindset and taking a midlife adventure:

Determine what you’re looking for and don’t be shy about it. What have you wanted to do for a long time but for various reasons have not? “Many of us think we should be grateful for all that we have and keep quiet,” Miller says. “But in our life journey we also have to explore our desires and what they might be showing us. If not, what’s the alternative? People need to be real about what they feel is missing, and why, in order to get the most out of the rest of their life.”

deductible.” So, with that in mind, here is an inexpensive project that could save you a lot of money in the long run. Inspect plumbing connections, appliance hoses and pipes for leaks. Refrigerators with icemakers or water dispensers, dishwashers and washing machines all have hoses that connect to your water supply. If these hoses wear out, blister or crack, or the connections loosen, they can cause leaks that can cause a lot of damage to your home and appliances. Replace these hoses with steelbraided hoses because they are less likely to fail and can be purchased at your local hardware store for around $20. Consult your owner’s manual for hose specifications and recommended replacement intervals. Periodically inspect the pipes under your kitchen and bathroom sinks for leaks. Also, if there’s a bathroom in your home that’s seldom used, turn the faucets on and off, and

flush the toilet once a week to ensure water continues flowing through the pipes properly. “Oftentimes, people will notice a brown spot on the ceiling, bulge in the wall or swelling cabinets - all indicators of water build-up or leaks and most homeowners policies don’t cover longterm leaks,” said O’Rourke. “It’s important to address these things as soon as possible because they can create extensive damage if left untreated.” If you suspect you may have a leak, but the source isn’t easily accessible, time is of the essence. The average cost to hire a plumber is about $300, which is less than the potential amount of damage an untreated leak might cause. REAL ESTATE Do You Need Flood Insurance? The Answer Is A Resounding “Yes” (NAPS) Floods are the most common and costly natural disasters occurring in the United States today. They can impact anyone, anywhere, at any time. Yet only 15 percent of Americans choose flood insurance, leaving countless properties uninsured. Just one inch of water can cause thousands of dollars in damage. As a homeowner, business owner or renter, your property is one of your most valued assets, so keeping it safe should be a priority. That includes taking preventive action to protect yourself against the risk of flooding. When those preventive actions are not enough, you may turn to insurance. But, did you know that flood-related property damages typically aren’t covered by a traditional property insurance policy?

Flood Insurance 101 A flood policy backed by FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is separate from a homeowner’s, business or renter’s insurance policy, and is serviced by private insurance companies. Flood insurance provides various levels of coverage for both building and contents, depending on the type of policy you purchase and the type of structure being insured. “It is important to discuss individual coverage needs and the coverages offered by the NFIP policy with an insurance agent,” said Cassie Masone, Vice President of Flood Operations for Selective Insurance—one of the top five largest writers of NFIP flood insurance in the country. “We have strong partnerships with independent insurance agents across the country who can help you find the right coverage based on your geographic area and overall flood exposure,” continued Masone. “Selective Insurance offers this valuable coverage to not only help rebuild properties but also to help people rebuild their lives following a flood.”

Flood Insurance Means Peace of Mind In the past six years, all 50 states have experienced some type of flooding event. With proper preparation, you may be able to mitigate the impact of a flooding event. Check with your independent agent to help determine what risks you face and the flood protection you need. You can also visit our-insurance/for-individuals/flood or call (877) 3480552 to find an agent in your area that can help you purchase a flood insurance policy. Flood insurance can mean more peace of mind for you and your family.

Why Flood Insurance Matters More than Ever Due to climate changes, flood events are becoming more prevalent, even in areas that have not typically experienced flooding. Wherever there is rain, there is risk of a flood. But it isn’t just rain—floods can also result from river-flow, tidal-surges, changes to the landscape due to building, development and wildfires, and floodcontrol structures such as dams and levees. For all of these reasons, the number of properties at risk for a devastating flood grows each year. If you don’t think you are at risk, think again: More than 20 percent of flood insurance claims come from properties located in low to moderate flood risk areas.
