tive therapy, a less invasive alternative to organ transplantation. This can alleviate waiting time for an organ donor and the stresses that accompany it, as well as less risk for rejection.

Aside from repairing or replacing damaged tissue, stem cell transplants have been used to support the immune system in its battle with some types of cancer and blood-related diseases, such as leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma and multiple myeloma. These transplants can use stem cells from adults or umbilical cord blood.

A stem cell line is a group of cells that descend from one cell and continue to grow in the laboratory, but do not differentiate into specific cell types. These lines are frozen and stored for future use or shared with other researchers.

STEM CELLS: Where They Come From, How They Work And Who Benefits By Them

At the beginning of the millenium here in the United States, government-funded stem cell research was stopped due to the controversial use of discarded embryonic tissue. Other countries, however, continued their research and today, stem cells are being used in amazing ways to generate new cells that repair diseased or damaged tissue.

So, what are stem cells? Where do they come from, and how do they work?

Stem cells generate naturally in our bodies every day. They replace our own living cells that survive only about 120 days. As we grow older, cell death continues, but regeneration to replace those cells slows down, and systems begin to decline.

Dead cells can form scar tissue and without new cells to replace them to bring nutrients and oxygen, an organ’s function declines.

There are many sources in our bodies that generate stem cells. In adults, stem cells can be harvested from bone marrow, blood and body fat. The patient can contribute their own stem cells to be stored until after chemo or a procedure; this is called an autologous donation. Or, stem cells can be donated to the patient by family or a non-relative if there is a blood and tissue match, an allogenic donation.

This has been the procedure for bone marrow transplants that we have heard about for decades..

However, stem cells taken from adults are not as versatile or durable or able to rep-

licate all types of body cells as the highly receptive brand new cells that are found in embryonic or post partum tissue.

For stem cell therapy, embryos that are only a few days old are the best, since they are the newest, cleanest and grow quickly. As per strict National Institute of Health (NIH) guidelines, these newly fertilized embryonic cells, only a few days old, must be nurtured in a Petri dish, frozen and stored in an in-vitro fertilization clinic for possible induction in the future. If the parent choses that these fertiled cells are no longer needed, the parent discontinues the storage and must provide written consent for medical research or use.

Around the same time as the Kyoto research, an Israeli research group teamed with the UK to develop a system utilizing mesenchymal stem cells from discarded placenta to heal wounds, so prevalent with the frequent bombings and military action in the nation. Further development at the Chaim Weitzman Research Center led to using stem cells to treat peripheral vascular disease, preventing limb amputation and improving life expectancy. Mesenchymal cells can also be harvested from body fat, bone marrow and cord blood after the birth of a child.

Stem cells also can be extracted from amniotic fluid when there is an amniocentesis procedure, as well as from postpartum placenta and cord blood, also with signed consent of the mother.

Today, not only are stem cells used to regenerate neurological damage in patients with Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, brain damage and injuries and pain, but orthopedists are injecting stem cells directly into joints and tissue to repair hip, spine, shoulder and knee degradation. iPS has opened doors to the regeneration of heart cells, brain cells and any organ of the body. People who may qualify for stem cell therapy include those with spinal cord injuries, type 1 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, burns, osteoarthritis, as well as cancer and its destructive post-chemo effects.

In 2006, because of the ethical concerns about using embryonic cells, a scientist from Kyoto University in Japan developed a process that took a skin cell, erased its life history and returned it to the clean slate it had as an embryo. He identified the result as an induced pluro-potent cell (iPS), cells that can divide into many more cells and since they are clean, are receptive to transform into any type of cell in the body.

Biotech companies specializing in harvesting stem cells are popping up all over the world. Israel has at least 18 that are harvesting cells to treat difficult conditions like childhood renal cancer. Mortality rate from heart attacks in Israel reduced 50% since 2008 by using stem cell regenerative therapy. Research at the Weitzman Center has been so forward-thinking that the country is advancing into a new industry… stem cell tourism.

This same researcher introduced heart and brain cells into iPS cells which began to regenerate into like cells of those organs. This paved the way for stem cell transplantation, now known as regenera-

Testosterone For Women, Estrogen For Men? Wrong Levels Bring Problems

terol, hardening of the arteries, and weak bones. Low testosterone levels give women many of the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism, which serves as another strong motivator for women to keep their testosterone levels up.

Sadly, most doctors are taught to prescribe only low doses of estradiol (in pill format, which is not good) and no testosterone whatsoever. In fact, doctors usually choose not to address hormone issues at all. They will tell you “normal ranges,” and if you happen to be low, they will usually prescribe you a medication for the symptoms. But that will never get your health back.

A healthy man usually needs to maintain at least a 10-to-1 ratio of testosterone to estrogen. When the ratio is far below 10to-1, estrogen levels are too high, and that brings with it a host of ailments.

Among the symptoms I’ve seen in men who have too much estrogen in their bodies are brain fog, blood clots, gynecomastia (man boobs), lack of erections, lack of sex drive, and low sperm counts.

There’s also a higher risk for prostate cancer and heart disease when estrogen (estradiol) levels in men are too high.

What your body needs is bioidentical hormone therapy. You may need to find another doctor, someone who will treat your low-testosterone symptoms with bioidentical testosterone.

Too little estrogen, and you also have a lack of sexual interest, few erections, and no libido. It’s also not healthy for the brain to have super-low estrogen levels, nor is brain fog a symptom that anyone enjoys.

I have found boosting testosterone levels with pellets to be effective and efficient.

They raise levels quickly, and you don’t need to come back for another treatment for three to four months, and sometimes six months. Testosterone injections are the next-best method if pellets are too pricey, followed by testosterone creams.

Testosterone is considered the manly hormone, yet few women know that they have quite a bit of it in their bodies, primarily when they are young. In their 20s and 30s, their testosterone is in the normal range, but after 40 is when we start to see the decline in levels.

I suggest women in their 40s start monitoring their testosterone levels. The time to start optimizing them is when the hormone levels go below 50-60 percent of upper range or when symptoms develop. When your testosterone levels are optimized, life is great!

There are numerous factors that push testosterone levels lower – menopause, medications, stress, aging, removal of ovaries, and more. And with that drop, a myriad of problems can occur. Blood work is needed to confirm suspicions, but persistent symptoms of low testosterone in women are hard to argue away. Among those symptoms are aching joints, depression, inability to sleep, lack of sex drive, migraines, and weight gain. But the great news is, it’s fixable.

You don’t normally think of women needing testosterone and men needing estrogen. But when those levels drop for women and men, respectively, or are way out of balance, a wide range of symptoms may be suffered. Fortunately, there are ways to correct those levels and restore health.

The hormone health zone for testosterone in women The first hormone women need to optimize is testosterone. It may sound a little strange to recommend testosterone therapy for women, but with it they can benefit enormously. Depression and anxiety usually lift. Yes guys, it’s true: Even men need estrogen. There’s just a delicate balance that needs to be understood.

Estrogen is one of those things that is good for you in the proper amounts but bad if you have too much or too little of it. Just the right amount of estradiol is good for bone strength, sperm count, cholesterol metabolism, healthy libido, and clear thinking, just to name a few of the known values of estrogen in men.

Usually, however, it is too much estrogen in men that is much more common. This occurs when testosterone levels decrease due to aging, obesity, lifestyle, a lack of exercise, stress, endocrine disruptors, and so on. Too much estrogen has been found to promote abnormal clot formation or

They are linked; raise testosterone, and estrogen usually rises; lower testosterone, and estrogen usually lowers. Remember, the goal is for at least a 10-to-1 ratio.

When men start using testosterone cream, shots, or pellets, some of the testosterone aromatizes, or converts, to estrogen. Some men have excessive aromatization, especially older men and men who are obese.

To stay in the estradiol hormone health zone, men will need to take a hormoneregulating supplement called DIM (Diindolylmethane), 150 mg twice a day. It is the safest way to lower estrogen without the fear of going too low.

For men who have never had their estrogen levels checked and believe they might have the symptoms of high or low estrogen, ask for blood work that gives you your estradiol level. Then you and your doctor will know what to do to treat it. Estrogen levels are usually pretty easy to treat in men.

It may be surprising that men need to watch their estrogen levels, but it’s one of those things that they must be aware of.

When we were learning to drive, we were all taught to watch for the “blind spots.”

A Doctor Shares 5 Things Consumers Must Know About Supplements You can’t deny it, supplements are everywhere. One trip down the vitamin aisle at your supermarket can leave even the biggest wellness junkie bewildered. There are so many products on the market - many offering contradicting information or claims - that it’s easy to understand why consumers are confused about selecting a supplement regimen.

Dr. NavNirat Nibber, N.D., co-owner of Crescent Health Clinic and medical advisor for Advanced Orthomolecular Research, explained what consumers should look for and be wary of when selecting a vitamin or supplement.

“Supplements can do so much for us, but ultimately what they’re doing is helping our body heal itself,” Nibber said.

While everyone should ideally get the nutrients they need from the food they eat, Nibber said that not everyone does, either because of restrictions to their diets or health issues that limit the ability to absorb or use the nutrients. And while you may think picking up a bottle of your pharmacy’s generic multivitamin may suffice, she cautioned against that approach.

Instead, she advocated a more personalized and thoughtful regimen with an established start and stop date, supported by a healthy diet, and a doctor recommendation - whenever possible.

For those considering supplements, Nibber recommended keeping in mind: 1) Supplements are just that - extra nutrients.

Health supplements can boost your overall health or compensate for deficiencies in your diet, but they are not a substitute for good nutrition. If you have a diet of high quality nutritious foods and no underlying genetic or physical concerns, you may not need supplements. But most people don’t get enough nutrients from their diets, whether from the decreasing quality of food, limited absorption capabilities due to underlying health conditions, or because of a genetic framework that limits what their body needs or can use. That’s when supplements can help.

2) Supplements are not one-size-fits-all.

To get the most from supplements, it’s best to assess your individual concerns and address a specific process that might not be functioning well by taking only what you need. Nibber explained this as a founding principle of Advanced Orthomolecular Research (AOR), which formulates its supplements to “deliver the right molecule in the right dose, at the right place, at the right time and in the right delivery form.”

Or source your supplements from a country with more stringent regulation, which requires in-depth medical studies for any claims. For example, supplements from AOR are evaluated by more rigorous Canadian standards for safety and effectiveness, ensuring potency, purity and traceability from plant to product. You can glean the quality of supplements by reading the label - do they state what form ingredients are in?

Do they list all non-medicinal ingredients?

4) Supplements have real, medicinal effects.

No supplement is completely benign. Supplements and vitamins can impact processes in your body and interact with medications you take.

Always read the label and consult with a medical practitioner regarding interactions. Too much of a good thing can be harmful, so try to establish a baseline either by having a healthcare provider review clinical signs and symptoms or by running lab work. And remember there are “normal levels” and there are “optimal levels.”

5) Supplements are not a magic cure-all.

While supplements have great healing potential, those that claim to singularly “cure” any condition are bound to be overstating their effectiveness. A supplement is more likely to reduce your risk factors, acting as a preventative. Or when used therapeutically, they work to address a genuine nutritional deficiency or certain aspects of your body’s processes.

Whatever you choose regarding supplements, examine the ingredient labels and verify the product is evaluated by an unbiased third party. Don’t spend money on one-size-fits-all supplements that provide too much or too little of what your body needs. Look for companies offering transparency about their processes and that provide information about the science behind their products. And always consult your doctor before taking supplements that may interact with your medications.

4 Myths About Salt After more than a century of debate over the role of salt in human health, new medical evidence suggests that reducing salt in the U.S. diet may pose a greater risk of harm to the average person. Consider these four common myths about salt: Myth 1: Salt consumption leads to hypertension According to the Mayo Clinic, “For most adults, there’s no identifiable cause of high blood pressure [hypertension].” Dr. Jan Staessen, head of the Research Unit on Hypertension at the University of Leuven in Belgium, has written that, “The evidence relating blood pressure to salt intake does not translate into an increased risk of incident hypertension in people consuming a usual salt diet.”

Having a temporarily elevated blood pressure is not the same thing as having hypertension, as blood pressure varies normally throughout the day depending on a variety of factors.

Myth 2: Americans could massively reduce their salt consumption without any negative health consequences Dr. Andrew Mente, of McMaster University in Canada, and his team conducted the largest ever epidemiologic study of the impact of sodium intake on blood pressure, cardiovascular disease risk and mortality. “We found that regardless of whether people have high blood pressure, low-sodium intake is related to more heart attacks, strokes and deaths compared to average intake,” he said.

Myth 3: The U.S. population would gain significant health benefits from major population-wide salt reduction The FDA recommends a maximum daily limit of 2,300 mg of sodium per day and a maximum of 1,500 mg for people with certain conditions. Salt is 40 percent sodium.

According to Dr. Michael H. Alderman of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine,

“Sodium consumption around the globe has a mean of about 3,600 mg/day, and a range from 2,600-5,000 mg/day. This mid-range describes about 90 percent of the world’s population. ... Optimal survival is realized by those whose intake is between 2,800 and 5,000 mg/day.

Specifically, there is no evidence of a superior health outcome at intakes less than 2,000 mg/day compared with those in the usual range.”

Myth 4: Americans eat more salt than ever Military records from the early 1800s up to WWII show that the average soldier was consuming between 6,000 and 6,800 mg/ day of sodium. We eat about half of that today, and that number has remained consistent since WWII. The advent of refrigeration meant that we could preserve food with less salt, but salt remains a critical ingredient for food safety and preservation.

Sodium chloride (salt) is a nutrient that the body cannot produce, and therefore it must be consumed. The average American eats about 3,400 mg per day of sodium, according to The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, right in the middle of the healthy range. However, patients with hypertension should consult with their physician.

Here Are 6 Ways To Create Good Health Habits It’s said that we become our habits. In some cases that is not a good thing; bad habits prevail among many Americans.

One report found that over 70 percent of US adults have at least one unhealthy behavior associated with chronic health problems.

Breaking bad habits isn’t easy, but sometimes the best answer is replacing them with empowering new habits that bring positive changes and better health to one’s daily life.

“We often have habits that hold us back, like smoking or eating food lacking in nutrition,” says Dr. Rob Carter III, co-author with his wife, Dr. Kirti Salwe Carter, of The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life (www.themorningmind.com).

“A great way to start every day is with a series of empowering habits. Morning, in fact, according to some researchers is the best time to start making these kinds of changes in your life.”

Carter has six ways you can create new, empowering habits and make them stick: Prioritize habits. “For each area in which you want to grow,” Carter says, “take some time to think about what kind of empowering habits you’d like to establish around that topic.” Areas to consider are health, wealth, social, relationships, job, hobbies, self-esteem, interpersonal skills, positive thinking, time management, and life purpose.

Be reasonable with yourself. The time it will take to establish the new habit depends upon how much resistance a person has.

And sometimes developing a new habit represents a long leap from where one currently stands. “That’s too daunting,” Carter says, “so break it down into more achievable steps. Incremental improvements add up to a big transformation and are often more powerful and sustainable.”

Commit specific time toward the goal.

Carter suggests nailing down a detailed timeline and committing a full effort toward formation of the new habit within that time span. “Write down what you hope to achieve, how many times a week you will practice the new habit, and when and where you’ll do it,” Carter says.

“Having a specific goal helps keep you accountable to yourself.

Reward success. Have a reward in place to celebrate performing your new habit.

“It has to be something that will motivate you to complete your habit,” Carter says.

Stack habits. “The neural pathways of your pre-existing habits are well-travelled routes in your brain,” Carter says. “You can take advantage of this by building a new habit and associating it with an old one that is well-established. This is a quicker way to create new habits than if you were to start from scratch. For example, if you want to create a new habit of exercising in the morning, and you have a habit of reading the newspaper every morning, tie these activities together by exercising immediately before you read the paper.

Reading the paper becomes your reward.”

“When you learn for yourself how simple it is to change habits,” Carter says, “you’ll want to make adjustments to your life.”
