The clinic and website which opened recently, offers screening, testing, and telemedicine for the community with immediate access available to first responders and seniors age 65 and older. In partnership with the City of Aventura, Pivot Concierge Health Clinic and Banyan Medical Systems have joined forces in opening a drive-thru site in Aventura to provide safe, accessible and trusted COVID-19 antibody testing and follow up care to those who need attention (ages 14 and up) during this pandemic. All major insurances accepted, no other out-of-pocket expense. Donations are always welcome. “As we grapple collectively with this crisis, it’s more important than ever to stand together in helping our community stay healthy. The City of Aventura is proud to be able to collaborate with community leaders to deliver a much needed COVID19 testing site.” — Mayor Enid Weisman. Where The clinic is located outdoors at the Aventura Mall (Expansion Parking Garage next to Apple Store). When Testing appointments are required and must be made through an online screening questionnaire at covidaventura.com. First responders and seniors age 65 and older will be given immediate access to testing by completing the online questionnaire

or calling 402-885-8125. Will there be a charge for for going to your drive-thru? No, you will personally not get charged. You will be asked for your insurance information, if accepted, your insurance may be charged under the current emergency rules and regulations. If you don’t have insurance or don’t want to use it, we suggest a $99 donation, but it is not required. Insurance information or payment is collected during the registration process. If follow up care for you is needed, it may be billed under ongoing chronic care/disease management. There will not be a cash payment onsite required and no other payment methods will be collected. Will I get my results right away? While the tests are a rapidresult screening, you will be asked to go home, and a provider will call you with the results by the end of the day or early the next day depending on what time the test was performed. Positive results (meaning, you may have COVID-19) will have priority outreach from the medical professionals. (note: If you are experiencing extreme symptoms, you may be asked to wait at the testing site until test results are given within 20 mins.) What kind of tests are being used? The COVID-19 tests that are being used are rapid-result antibody screenings administered by sampling the blood for the presence of antibodies. The results can show whether you have had an exposure in the past and/or if your body is currently fighting the disease. How accurate is this test? The screening is over 90% accurate. Which means that is possible that you test negative and are already in the early stages of being infected. Any test result, including this one, will be evaluated by the medical provid-

ers in context with your current and past symptoms and interpreted accordingly. If it needs to be repeated and/or complimented with other diagnostic tests or activities, the clinicians will provide this assistance. For additional testing, you may require a nasal swap if you have symptoms. Finally, it is your choice to take this screening. At your preference they will provide you with telecare for your wellbeing whether you do or don’t choose to be screened. In any case, everyone should always be vigilant with a negative test as one can get infected at a later date. Will I need to get out of my car? No. The rules are strict, and you will be required to stay in your car. Lower your window only when a test-site official asks you to. There is no need to hand them anything. They will ask you verbal questions and provide instructions on how you follow to administer the test. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to a virus. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty. Sleep Apnea - Coronavirus - Immune System Connection By Howard J. Hoffman, DDS

The novel coronavirus pandemic has all of us concerned about our health, and rightfully so – it is scary to contemplate getting sick. But it is even more troubling if we have underlying conditions that may or may not be diagnosed. Did you know that respiratory problems place you at greater risk of serious complications from coronavirus?

MAY 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8

COVID-19/ Sleep Apnea Similarities Do you know the signs of respiratory distress? Did you know that poor sleep is one of these signs? Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a respiratory condition that can influence and complicate the effects of the coronavirus on our health. In addition, high blood pressure, heart disease, A-fib, diabetes, stress, pulmonary and lung conditions are all known to increase your risks when contracting this disease. In fact, according to the CDC, patients with these conditions have an increased fatality rate for COVID-19, ranging from 6% to more than 10% compared with JUST .9% for patients without these underlying conditions. Now, more than ever, it is necessary and urgent to diagnose any underlying conditions that effect your health. Many patients reflect on years of poor

866-4SLEEP-0 sleep, snoring, restlessness and being jarred awake at night, not to mention the negative impacts on your partner. 90% of those with sleep apnea have not been diagnosed yet. So, how do you know if you have Sleep Apnea?

• Mood changes • High Blood Pressure • Problems with libido and E.D. All of these are signs that you may be affected by sleep apnea. But a SLEEP TEST is the only way to know for sure.

There are a range of symptoms to watch for: • Snoring • Overtired • Depression • Stress • Frequent naps • Gasping for air • Waking unrefreshed, that • “still tired” feeling

Telemedicine With the restraints on our movement and public gathering, many patients are stressed and concerned about “live” doctor’s visits. We allay those concerns with Telemedicine. The Home Sleep Test, is much more convenient than an “in-lab” study. Support is available to guide you

through the process. This new Telemedicine option has enabled physicians to begin the process of screening and conduct a preliminary examination, allowing the insurance and verification process to begin you down the road of treatment. When a sleep test is scored, a follow-up visit with a sleep specialist occurs to discuss your individual needs, diagnosis and treatment options. A provisional appliance may be prescribed which offers temporary relief and a lessening of symptoms as a patient waits for further results and a subsequent, custom-

tailored treatment plan. Ignoring sleep apnea and the signs of respiratory distress is important to diagnose and treat. Treatment for Sleep Apnea may help improve your overall health and lessen your chance of complications from COVID-19 by diagnosing sleep apnea and the related respiratory problems. Fox Vein & Laser Experts The New Normal

The world is moving forward and we are welcoming a new normal. After two months of quarantine, we are excited to welcome the new normal to our office with the resumption of treating patients and doing elective procedures. We will be expanding services offered over the next month to include more cosmetic procedures as allowed. We have been in business for decades and have always maintained a high level of cleanliness. Our new normal will be the normal for most physicians, hospitals and medical offices and we are doing our best at keeping our patients and our staff safe and healthy, while opening our doors and expanding our services. We are back in the office for vein procedures, ultrasounds and consults. Gradually, we will be expanding to other cosmetic and laser procedures as allowed. These include micro-needling, laser hair removal, PRP, vivace, hydrofacials, peels, laser tattoo removal, scar removal, acne removal and more. We will also continue to offer telemedicine visits and are encouraging those who do not need to be seen in person to take advantage of

these virtual consults and follow ups. Are you tired of the unsightly appearance of your varicose veins or, more importantly, want to rid yourself of them for good so that they don’t cause more health problems down the line? Whichever the reason, treating your varicose veins means getting to know the different varicose vein removal procedures at Fox Vein & Laser Experts, South Florida’s best vein removal center. Providing you relief, both physically and aesthetically, from your varicose veins, has been a passion of ours for as long as we’ve been in business. We know how important feeling and looking good is to your daily routine, which is why we have a multitude of ways to treat your leg veins once and for all. “We want to ensure that no matter your age, skin type, or vascular issues, there is a way for your legs to be restored to good health,” Dr. Susan Fox says. “The reason why we have so many different varicose vein treatments is because there are so many different types of veins, and we like to treat the specific vein with the

correct treatment to get you the best results. What kinds of veins do I have? First, it’s important to know whether the bluish, purplish veins that you see on your legs are in fact, varicose veins. A lot of times, people confuse the more severe varicose veins with the less obvious spider veins that are pretty common, as well. Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen and felt through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red and blue vessels that are tiny superficial veins that branch on the skin like a spider’s web. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin. What most people don’t know, however, is that both spider veins and varicose veins can be connected and can cause symptoms. Varicose veins can bulge out and twist and turn on peoples’ legs. They form ropes that can often be felt and seen through clothing and cause the legs to swell and ache and become more and more discolored over time. Spider veins are the small tiny superficial veins

that have been shown to cause symptoms in almost 60% of people. People deem veins as being cosmetic issues but they can cause many medically necessary symptoms such as leg pain, heaviness, clots, aching, swelling, ulcerations and more. Even people with spider veins can have symptoms. Patients who have varicose veins almost always have spider veins. However, some people get spider veins and never have a problem with varicose veins. Now that we’ve cleared that up (pun intended) let’s take care of those legs! What are the different varicose vein treatment options available at Fox Vein & Laser Experts? VenaSeal This is a great non-surgical approach to removing your varicose veins. VenaSeal™ attempts to treat veins by fostering a clot to form. It does this with a gluelike substance that adheres to the walls of the vein. This substance is injected into the vein blocking the blood flow and shutting down this vein. It is

done in the office and has minimal down time. How Does It Differ from Other Vein Treatments? VenaSeal™ differs from traditional vein treatments in the way it quickly causes occlusion within the vein. Treatments take only 20-30 minutes each. The good news is that it is quick and shuts down many veins. However, there can be some down-side and this may not be the right treatment for you. You should discuss this with your physician. Varithena™ Is a proprietary foam. For decades polidocanol (asclera) has been used as a sclerosant or solution used to irritate the vein lining and close the veins shut. Varithena comes in a canister and is a foamed version of this solution that when injected into the vein, pushes the blood out of the way and irritates the vein lining causing it to scar down and seal shut. It causes larger superficial or perforator veins such as the saphenous veins and their branches to scar down and seal shut. There is no incision, no sutures and no

Compression Stockings In some cases, wearing compression stockings is enough to help lessen the symptoms of your varicose veins. The stockings are tight and have graduated compression over the affected areas. They are very tight in the feet and ankles and then loosen up as they get to the upper part of the leg thus encouraging blood flow towards the heart - a major factor in what causes the varicose veins to begin with! The veins will not go away with compression stockings but the legs often feel better when they are worn daily. Ambulatory Phlebectomy A surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome twisty-turny veins, ambulatory phlebectomy is an

The veins are teased out through very small holes without causing any major scarring or requiring major surgery, which is a significant advancement from the extensive vein stripping procedures of the past. Does this surgical varicose vein removal require a lot of time to heal?

Although this procedure requires small incisions in the skin, most patients return to normal activities immediately afterward without any necessary recovery time. Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98100 percent, endovenous laser

ablation involves inserting a very thin laser fiber through the affected vein via a needle so there is normally no scar or incision and requires no sutures. Small pulses of laser light energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein under ultrasound guidance, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. People can return to normal activities immediately and are encouraged

to walk, stay active and wear compression hose. During the treatment process, the blood from these veins is redirected to better more competent veins and these insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. Sounds perfect? Wait, it gets better. These kinds of procedures can be done in just a 15 to 30minute window of time! As you can see, we have plenty of ways to make sure the veins in your legs are at their healthiest. First Responders For Your Home Water Damage - Leak Detection - Mold Testing - Sanitizing If your home has been damaged by water from a leak or a fire, How are you going to address the problem in your home? A Restoration Company such as 1st Priority Restoration is usually the first responder following significant damage to a home from floods and fires, water damage, sewage backup and other major events. The job of a restoration company is to clean up the mess and to preserve and protect the home and its contents so that further damage will not occur. Flood damage can be found in any geographical area, regardless of elevation. The causes of flooding can range from natural disasters to burst pipes or sewer lines. Regardless of the cause, restoration professionals are called upon to repair water damage and restore flooded properties. The water damage restoration process is highly regulated in order to

ensure that properties damaged by flood or sewer events can be effectively restored to a safe space for a homeowner to remain safe during the cleanup. You need a company such as 1st Priority Restoration who you can trust. The process is simple, when 1st Priority Restoration arrives, they will thoroughly walk through your home and discuss the areas that need to be cleaned & restored. Your insurance company adjuster or claim representative may recommend what and how your home should be cleaned, but in the end it is your decision. In the past month, we have all heard the word “Mitigation” more times than we can count, but with water damage that is exactly what needs to be done. Water damage restoration shouldn’t stop at restoring back your real estate back to proper

functioning. Inspect underlying causes that caused the water damage in the first place and make sure there won’t be a reoccurrence. Repair structures and replace materials to make your property safe for years to come. If your property has been exposed to water damage you may have to do water mitigation. Strict actions are required in water mitigation such as removal of damaged materials such as drywall and flooring. Molds and mildew that have accumulated in areas in your property will be disinfected and deodorized to restore a healthy environment. Further cleaning and deodorizing should be done to make sure your real estate is back in top shape. Water damage mitigation should happen immediately after flooding or water buildup. Take action immediately because letting your property sit

in water causes further damage and expense. Materials soaking in water collect microbes and spread water-borne diseases. Furniture, wood flooring, and walls will crack, sag and collect fungi after prolonged exposure to moisture. If your property is particularly old, it may be time to replace materials such as pipes to prevent a reoccurrence of water damage. If pipes are behind walls, it may require more extensive repair. The water mitigation process will depend on how long your property has been exposed to

water. Air humidifiers and drying equipment must be turned on round the clock in areas with severe water damage. Mold spores are especially dangerous to health and thorough cleaning and disinfecting should be done as part of the water damage mitigation. It is advisable to get the temperature, humidity, and moisture of your property tested to see if it has been restored to normal standards, 1st Priority professionals can handle the entire process. After 1st Priority

REAL ESTATE MOLD Continued From Pg 12 Restoration evaluates the work and equipment needed to clean your home, they will provide you with an estimate or contract for their services.

Mold And Your Home Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air

Never Fool Around With Mold & Mildew When it comes to mold and mildew, we cannot take those potential hazards lightly. A mold problem can cause you to experience dizziness, anxiety and depression, and even hallucinations. If you have been experiencing a diminished attention span or problems with your memory, it might be a good idea to have your home inspected for black mold by a mold remediation crew. For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. At 1st Priority Restoration, this is what they do 365 days a year, and nobody knows how to prevent potential dangers like they do – and by dial-

ing 1-800-617-1112 – you can save financially - as well as with your health! Very Important Information There are some important ways we can prevent the spread of mold, and what you can do to get rid of it. Keep an eye out for hidden leaks: Wet spots on your ceiling, at the baseboards or on the floor are a telltale sign of a leaky pipe or roof. Your homes pipes are behind drywall, which can leave a small leak unnoticed. Mold can grow behind those walls and filter into the air through ducts or pipes. At 1st Priority, they can come in and assess the situation before it gets worse. Did you know that many air conditioners, especially window units, are susceptible to mold growth! They often trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for spores. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms create a lot of excess heat and humidity, especially here in south Florida – whether it be from a shower, stove or even a dryer. All three of these areas should be well ventilated. Education is key to anything – and when our health is at stake – knowing that mold spores can lay dormant for years after they are produced and could begin growing at any time is extremely important to know. Because of this, regular cleaning and having 1st Priority Restoration to depend on, will certainly make our lives much easier. Sanitizing There is no bigger issue for everyone than their health. With viruses on everyone’s mind and in the headlines the uncertainty about how to avoid contracting them has everyone on edge. The best way to combat this fear and anxiety is with knowledge. The knowledge

about the proper steps to protect yourself and your loved ones outside and inside your home. For the near future, sanitizing yourself and your home will be the new norm, so arm yourself with the facts, and that will help decrease your anxiety. Outside of the home we have less control over our environment, but there are ways to lessen your exposure. The CDC (Centers For Disease Control) has recommendations for steps to protect yourself. First, stay home when you are sick, this will help stop the spread. Limit movement in the community, establish ways to communicate with family and friends that don’t require person to person contact. Discuss with your employer the possibility of working from home. Clean your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public

place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Inside your home is where you can really make a difference in the health of your family. Viruses can be scary, but the fact of the matter is the chance of contracting it in your home can be mitigated through sanitizing frequently touched surfaces and air vents. That is where a professional service such as 1st Priority Restoration can help. That nagging cough you may have should make you think twice about your health. That cough can be caused from exposure to damp and moldy environ-

ments or viruses which can lead to a variety of health effects that aren’t related to the Coronavirus, but certainly can affect your health in a negative way. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. People with chronic lung illnesses may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. Ever wonder why you or your children wake up coughing and sneezing on a regular basis? The CDC may have the answer. According to the CDC, in 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper

outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags, and pets can and be carried indoors. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery. With all the rain and storms we have been having these past months you can see a pattern of mold growth that will last. From leaks, flooding, and driving rain, mold growth is a certainty in South Florida. If you are concerned you might have a mold or mildew problem it is best to call professionals for a complete evaluation of your home. REAL ESTATE MOLD Continued From Pg 13 respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, and wheezing in otherwise healthy people and in individuals susceptible with compromised immune conditions. Mold or mold spores may cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold. Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can cause symptoms of irritation in the eyes, skin, and airways. For example, the “black mold” Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produces toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. Sometimes, people may develop severe reactions to mold exposure, but cleaning and sanitizing by professionals can help mitigate the health issues.
