Unlike stretching or fitness, yoga is more than just physical postures. Yoga is unique because we connect the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind to the
rhythm of our breath. Connecting the mind, body, and breath helps us to direct our attention inward. Through this process of inward attention, we learn to recognize our habitual thought patterns without labeling them, judging them, or trying to change them. We become more aware of our experiences from moment to moment. The awareness that we cultivate is what makes yoga a practice, rather than a task or a goal to be completed. Your body will most likely become much more flexible by doing yoga, and so will your mind.
I’m Not Flexible Can I Do Yoga? Yes! You are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play tennis in order to take tennis lessons. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible. This newfound agility will be balanced by strength, coordination, and enhanced cardiovascular health, as well as a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

DANCE NOW! Miami Makes Broward Debut Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When one of South Florida’s leading dance companies, Dance NOW! Miami, performs for the first time at the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater, both meanings of the word will be invoked. Fresh off the company’s recent tour of Italy, the evening, on Friday, May 17, at 8 pm, includes their signature sinewy and graceful choreography in the Broward premieres of their Bridges NOT Walls, (B)ORGIA: Decadence & Decay and Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre; and the world premiere of The Shifting Weight of Water. Taking as its jumping off point the recent political struggles and turmoil that have divided America, Bridges NOT Walls, choreographed by Dance NOW! Artistic Directors Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten, is an investigation of the human condition. “Differences among people cause us to fear one another, separating us, instead of allowing us to find common ground,” says Baumgarten. Inspired by the Barack Obama quote – We must guard against a tribalism that is built on us against them – the work explores ways to overcome these natural instincts and to find compassion for one another in a diverse society. Bridges NOT Walls includes original video art by South Florida-based Francisco Javier Moraga Escalona, and a compelling musical score. It has evolved over the past two years since its world pre-
miere in Miami, as Dance NOW! traveled to a residency in Mexico and in collaboration with the Mexico City Ballet/ Compañia de Danza Clásica Quintana Roo, and most recently with Italy’s Opus Ballet. The evening also features three other signature works from Dance NOW!, including the world premiere of Salterini’s The Shifting Weight of Water, a poetic ensemble work for six members of the company, built around the music of South African composer Phillip Miller. Two Broward premieres round out the program. Baumgarten and Salterini’s jointly created (B)ORGIA: Decadence & Decay, was inspired by the real life story of the famous Italian Renaissance-era family, with original costumes conceived and created by Haydée Morales, designer for Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Celia Cruz and others. Salterini, who is originally from Italy, says, “It’s so wonderful for me to dive deep into Italian history with this piece, and dig into the complex contradictions that were part of the Borgia family.” Finally, there will be Baumgarten’s Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre a collaboration with composer Federico
Bonacossa who uses the ancient instrument the Viola de Gamba for the score. It is a retelling of the Roman myth, chronicling the tale of a couple’s passionate love and a tragic suicide. Tickets are $35 with $15 student and senior tickets. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center, Parker Playhouse and affiliated venues. Buy tickets online at BrowardCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com; by phone at 954.462.0222 or the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. CITY NEWS 69 Percent of Teens Support “Debt-Free College;” Drops to 33 Percent if it Means “Higher Taxes” A new survey by Junior Achievement (JA) conducted by the research group Engine shows that more than two-thirds (69%) of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 support the idea of “debt-free college.” However, that support drops to a third (33%) if it’s paid for with higher taxes. The survey of 1,004 teens was conducted from April 16 to 21, 2019. “With total student loan debt approaching $1.6 trillion dollars, it’s not surprising today’s teens support proposals like debt-free college,” said Catherine Haga, President of Junior Achievement of Greater Miami, Inc. “This survey shows, however, that while many teens are supportive of these proposals, they may not have a full understanding of the financial aspects involved.” The survey also found that nearly all teens (94%) plan to go to college. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 69.7 percent of U.S. high school graduates enrolled in college in 2016. Just under a third (30%) of survey respondents said they expected to take out student loans to help pay for college, while nearly a fourth (22%) expected to find other ways to pay for college and the rest (41%) were unsure of how they would pay for college. According to The Institute for College Access & Success, 71 percent of U.S. college graduates have student loan debt. “When it comes to paying for college, these results indicate many teens simply haven’t given it much thought. As a result, they are going to be more inclined to borrow when they are in college,”
added Haga. “One way to help better prepare young people to make informed decisions about paying for college is through programs like Junior Achievement.” Junior Achievement delivers programs focused on promoting workreadiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to students in grades K through 12. JA’s programs help teens better understand their options when it comes to paying for higher education and encourages them not to take on more debt than they can pay off in a reasonable amount of time given their expected future income. In 2018, Junior Achievement reached 50,000 students in Greater Miami. Methodology This report presents the findings of a Youth CARAVAN survey conducted by Engine among a sample of 1,004 13-17-year olds, comprising of 502 males and 502 females. This survey was live on April 16-21, 2019. Respondents for this survey are selected from among those who have volunteered to participate in online surveys and
polls. Because the sample is based on those who initially self-selected for participation, no estimates of sampling error can be calculated. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to multiple sources of error, including, but not limited to sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options. About Junior Achievement of Greater Miami Junior Achievement of Greater Miami, Inc. (JA) prepares young people to thrive in the 21st century workplace and global economy by inspiring a passion in free enterprise and entrepreneurship and instilling an understanding of personal financial literacy. During the 2017/ 18 school year, JA will provide programs to more than 34,000 students throughout Miami Dade and Monroe Counties. These programs are always free to schools thanks to 1,300 volunteers and the generous support of donors. For more information, visit www.ja miami.org

It Will Be A Fun Summer To Remember From Summer Camp - To Field Trips, Swimming & So Much More By Larry Blustein • Aventura Digest
MAY 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 14
While the calendar says May, in less than one month, it will be summer - and youngsters and adults will be searching for things to do. Living in such paradise - year round there is really never a shortage of events that we have throughout all of south Florida, and for Kelly Meyers, her husband and three children, living in Aventura, there are many options to get through those long, hot months. “The great thing about living here in Aventura is there is something for every age - and that is perfect for our family,” Meyers said. “Having lived much of my young years in Germany, there was never enough for us - as kids - growing up in the summer. But look at the location of where we are at now, and that is not a problem. The past summers, we have all taken advantage of what the City has.” From summer camps to field trips and tours - to women’s self defense courses, swimming and so much more - many are so much looking forward to this summer and it is coming quicker than you think. As seniors will be graduating in the coming weeks from high school and headed off to college, youngsters are always searching for things to keep them occupied. SUMMER CAMP The City of Aventura’s summer camp
registration continues at three different locations, giving residents an option to get signed up: • Community Recreation Center, • 3375 NE 188 Street. • Founders Park, 3105 NE 190 Street. • Waterways Park, 3301 NE 213 Street. Campers ages 5-14 have the opportunity to spend the summer participating in a variety of fun activities, field trips, playing outdoor/indoor games, and making new friends. Drew Miller’s son took advantage of last year’s Summer Camp (Ages 5-14), where at the age of 10, he enjoyed arts & crafts, games, sports, special events, field trips, and swimming. “Kids love anything when they are kept busy and challenged,” Miller pointed out. “My son loves swimming, and has already signed up for the June 10 - August 16 session. The City of Aventura also offers a challenging Sports Camp (Ages 7-14) that provides sports such as: soccer, basketball, volleyball, or cheerleading/dance. The camp is held from June 10 - August 9. The Art Camp (Ages 5-14) is also a place where campers learn about artists, media and techniques through art history and multicultural appreciation in a fun and educational environment. It runs from June 10 - July 26. In a day where youngsters love technology, the Sci-Tech Camp (Ages 7-12) is
perfect for campers, who explore interconnectedness between science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) - while their creativity and problem-solving skills get challenged. It is held from June 10 - July 26. Because we live in south Florida, being outdoors is always popular - and with the Travel Camp (Ages 10-14), youngsters will participate in daily field trips to local attractions as well as swimming, games, arts & crafts, and special events. That runs from June 10 - August 5. Get all the information at 305-4668910. FOUNDERS PARK SPLASH PAD There is no secret when it comes to the Founders Park SplashPad. The highly acclaimed interactive water playground for children, is located inside Founders Park at 3105 N.E. 190 Street. The SplashPad is closed on Mondays except for the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. For more information, visit cityofaventura.com or contact Founders Park at 305-466-0183.
ADULTS ARE ASLO INCLUDED Because many area adults are also looking for things to do during the summer, there are plenty of things geared toward you as well.
WOMEN’S SELF DEFENSE CLASSES Earlier this year, Julie Templeton took a self defense course after her family back in New York pleaded with her, as a single woman, living in south Florida, to know how to defend herself. She signed up and completed the course. It was the best thing she did. “No matter where you live, and you happen to be a woman, there are some men who think they have the upper-hand against you,” Julie explained. “By taking courses that teach you those little things that you need to know to defend yourself in uncomfortable situations, it makes a huge difference.” Whether she ever has to use anything that was taught to her, Julie knows that now she is going to be ready - and suggests that all women need to take courses for self esteem and confidence as well. After a successful course held earlier this year, the City of Aventura and Aventura Police Department will once again offer another women’s self-defense course in June at the Community Recreation Center. The free course consists of a set of 3 classes aiming to empower women with awareness, reaction training, strikes, and focus of power. Classes are open to ladies ages 15 and over. The classes will be held at the Community Recreation Center from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: June 11, 18 and 25, 2019. Like Julie, upon completion, students should feel confident and in control of their personal safety. For more information, contact the Community Recreation Center at 305-466-3883.

“ROCKTOPIA” Hits Florida This Month
Direct from its smash-hit run on Broadway, the international music sensation Rocktopia comes to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, May 15 at 8 p.m and then off to the rest of the tour. An explosive musical concert event that fuses the most iconic 20th-century rock with worldrenowned classical masterpieces, Rocktopia features the works of musical innovators across centuries—including Journey, Mozart, Queen, Beethoven, Aerosmith, Handel, Led Zeppelin, Tchaikovsky, U2,
Heart, Puccini, The Who, and more. Created through the unique vision of vocalist and recording artist Rob Evan (Broadway: Les Miserables, Jekyll & Hyde; TransSiberian Orchestra) and Maestro Randall Craig Fleischer (San Francisco Symphony), Rocktopia delivers one-of-a-kind, spinetingling musical arrangements with insanely talented lead vocalists, a five-piece rock band, a local choir and live orchestra. The groundbreaking live concert is performed by a celebrated, diverse array of rock, Broadway, and opera vocalists:
Rob Evan; Chloe Lowery (TransSiberian Orchestra, Chris Botti, Yanni’s Voices); Alyson Cambridge (The Merry Widow at the Met Opera, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, Show Boat); James Valenti (Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Roméo and Juliet), Toby Rand (frontman for STADIUM – supergroup with members from INXS, Morrissey, & Dorothy; Toby Rand & The NoMads; Finalist on CBS TV’s “Rockstar: Supernova”), and Kia Ifani Warren (Revel In Dimes). The world-class musicians featured include Grammy and Emmy Award nominated violin-
ist Máiréad Nesbitt (Celtic Woman, Lord of the Dance). An inaugural performance of the show, Rocktopia: Live from Budapest produced by Two Hands Entertainment/Jeff Rowland, was recorded in front of a live audience in June 2016 at the 19th century Hungarian State Opera House for PBS. It was performed with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra with six vocalists, a fivepiece rock band, the Hungarian State Opera Chorus, and the Jazz and More Choir. Rocktopia toured over twenty cities in the United States in 2016, featuring local symphonies and choirs across the country, and rocked Broadway during its spring 2018 limited engagement. Adored by audiences and critics alike, Billboard called Rocktopia, “a thrilling musical fusion,” and Howard Stern praised the show saying, “it’s very cool…really a lot of fun.” “Rocktopia blends classical music with classic rock, a big live orchestra, and an even bigger choir to create an evening that has even the most jaded New Yorkers dancing in their seats,” exclaimed Broadway Box. DC Metro Arts adds, “with rousing peaks and powerful performances, you’ll be rocking and cheering! All of the musicians are impressive - with Tony Bruno’s guitar solos being especially electrifying and Máiréad
Nesbitt’s performances a thrilling highlight.” Rocktopia is produced by ROCKTOPIA Broadway LLC (William Franzblau, Executive Producer and Maggie SeidelLaws, Associate Producer) in association with HUGHES WALL LLC. Tickets are 30-$75 with $115 JetBlue Flight Deck on the Club Level tickets available. HEALTH Poor Planning In Retirement Can Lead To Healthcare Problems Ideally, retirement is a time someone anticipates eagerly – a reward for a lifetime of hard work and solid financial
planning. But nearly half of workers who haven’t reached retirement yet aren’t that excited about the so-called golden years. In fact, they have big concerns. A Gallup poll showed 46 percent of those not yet retired expect they’ll be financially strapped when they do retire. Gallup’s tracking of that metric has
reflected persistent concerns with retirement through the early 21st century. Fifteen years ago, only 36 percent of workers said they wouldn’t have enough money to be comfortable in retirement. “A lack of sufficient retirement savings is a common problem, but there’s a lot more to the pie chart of a comfortable retirement,” says Chris Hobart, (www.hobart financialgroup.com), a financial professional and CEO of Hobart Financial Group. “Even people who have saved and invested wisely don’t factor in enough of the costs in retirement, from health care to single living and taxes.” Hobart notes five common retirement-planning mistakes: Underestimating health-care costs. It’s estimated that the average 65-year-old couple will need $280,000 in today’s dollars for health-care costs, and that
number doesn’t include long-term care. “Typically, we look at longevity as a blessing, but the longer we live, the more likely we are to have health-care issues,” Hobart says. “The No. 1 solution is being intentional about segmenting a portion of money to address long-term health-care issues and studying the applicable insurance products. Many Americans ignore this problem and hope they don’t have to deal with it, and then when they do, it’s too late.” Not having a plan for the surviving spouse. On average, women outlive men. “But for either spouse, the main factors to consider for a surviving spouse plan are the potentially reduced income, taxes as a single filer, where they’ll live, and paying for the deceased spouse’s final expenses,” Hobart says. “Another problem results if the surviving spouse was never engaged much in the couple’s financial planning. It pays for both spouses to have a good working knowledge about it.” Counting on Social Security to cover expenses. The monthly Social Security check usually won’t pay the bills, especially if you still have mortgage payments. “You’ll need to make up the
shortfall with other sources of income,” Hobart says. “The important thing to look at here is, in a world where few people have pensions anymore, the onus on saving is on the individual retiree. It’s more important than it’s ever been.” Thinking you can dictate when you retire. One study showed that 51 percent of retirees retired earlier than they planned – and less than half did so by choice. “You have to expect the unexpected and plan for it well ahead of time,” Hobart says. “Many things can happen – downsizing, health issues, taking care of a family member.” Signing up late for Medicare. The initial enrollment period is three months leading up to your 65th birthday, during the birthday month, or three months later. But if you don’t enroll, your Medicare premiums can increase by 10 percent for each year you were eligible and didn’t enroll. “Whether you like Medicare or not, you don’t want to pay more for something when you didn’t have to,” Hobart says. “There is no reason you should trip over these things that you can avoid early on,” Hobart says.

While it’s about business and getting customers the best real estate deals - it’s also about family for Karla Guadamuz-Davis. Late husband Howard Davis, Jr. and daughter Samiha have been major inspirations in her life. many miss out on, but for Karla, who saw her mother sell sandwiches out of a lunch wagon and then become a Nurse after going to night school for years; it was just the motivation and character-building that has been a trademark in her professional life. “When you see people that you love and care about so much, working their fingers to the bone to make a better life, those are the things that stick with you and have for many years,” Karla pointed out. “For me, graduating from college and working in the media really shaped me for the future.” From media to marketing work and just about everything else in between, Karla shattered that glass ceiling and showed what women can do in a society that males have dominated for generations. THE GREAT HOWARD DAVIS JR. Karla’s life path really changed when she left her journalism career to launch a successful MMA professional fight company: Fight Time Promotions. That was a move that really surprised many, including her mother, who had long been the rock and her support. The company’s popular events were featured on CBS Sports, FoxSportsNet and HBO Plus just to name a few. The company was a true labor of love; as she worked alongside Howard Davis Jr., 1976 Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist. Her association with the legendary boxing champ led to something more. Her passion for life, hard work and challenges brought this TV personality into gyms and
seated at some of the best fights in the world. Karla’s admiration for the sport and for what Davis Jr. had accomplished, brought their relationship to another level - when they married and had a daughter in 2010. Karla and Howard had built the No. 1 MMA show in Florida, and everyone wanted be a part of it - including major sponsors such as JM Lexus and Jack Daniels. With everything going so well, and Karla a happy mother and wife, the first major life obstacle came about when Davis Jr., was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2015. “You talk about news hitting like a ton of bricks,” Karla recalled. “I had noticed that Howard had been getting tired a lot and we needed to find out what it was. I remember this so vividly - because I left him at the doctor’s office for tests and when I came back, I was hit in the face with the news.” With fundraisers to pay for the high cost of non-traditional treatments, Karla prepared herself and her daughter, Samiha, for life without someone who had been such a difference maker in their lives. Tragically, Davis Jr., passed away from lung cancer 10 months later. “If I didn’t have my mother for support and daughter to remind me how special Howard was, I don’t know what would have happened,” Karla said. “We stayed with the MMA business for a while, but it wasn’t the same without him.” As she pondered her future, it was something that she was told that stuck in her head. Because of her passion, zest for
life and embracing new challenges, real estate was thought to be her calling - and they were right. After being a successful agent; she decided to go to the next level as a Broker and launched I Love Mi Casa Realty, LLC in dedication of her late husband’s memory. Like anything that Karla GuadamuzDavis has done in her productive career, real estate was a natural progression. Here love for people, telling the truth and dealing with the positives has given her business a major advantage. “What I have done is fully immerse myself in real estate, knowing the market from top to bottom,” she said. “The one thing that has helped me to raise the bar in anything that I do is having support. When we hire our agents, they have to be on the same page and share the same strong work ethic and commitment to excellence that make I Love Mi Casa Realty a top boutique real estate agency.” In 2018, Karla was the top agent in her office and was launching her own company with a brand that’s establishing her business as one of the best in South Florida. She was happy, surrounded by her family and a great support staff. But that all changed when her mother, Gloria, was diagnosed with Leukemia. She passed three years to the day that her husband died. “That was something that could have easily pushed me over the edge,” Karla recalled. “My rock and someone who had taught me everything, was gone. But the

When you are buying a home, it is often the biggest purchase that you will ever make - and for that reason - Karla Guadamuz-Davis is someone that you want on your side. As a former South Florida Journalist who has built up positive contacts and a network that continues to grow, Guadamuz-Davis understands what we are all dealing with when making that purchase. This full-time professional Broker and single mother of a young daughter, has accomplished so much - and has now channeled her energies into I Love Mi Casa Realty, LLC with offices in Aventura & Hallandale Beach. While her many clients and co-workers see someone every day who brings an “A” game to the office and wants to succeed in everything she does, Karla is an example of going after something and embracing it. Born and raised in Miami, Karla’s parents came from Nicaragua in search of achieving the American dream! In 1995, she graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Communications and Political Science. She then became a successful Journalist as an Assignment Editor, Producer and Reporter at South Florida television networks for 15-years. “I learned this work ethic from both of my parents and it’s something that I have continued to live by,” Karla explained. “My mom came here and cleaned houses, my dad worked at restaurants and I saw this all unfold and that inspired me to be the very best I can.” Work ethic is indeed something that

I LOVE MI CASA REALTY - Love for South Florida Karla’s love for South Florida as a local resident is what makes her passionate about representing realtors in a positive way. “Agents get a bad reputation at times due to bad service or lack of knowledge. When clients call us - especially from out of town - we’re ready with expansive knowledge of our community and extensive research on properties that we conduct before showing. We want to represent our industry in a positive way, since it affects all of us in the South Florida real estate market,” said Karla. In addition, another positive in the business has been being branded by Zillow as a top agent, which has been a vital tool in buying and selling and has helped Karla work toward her goal of expanding her brand. “My home has always been South Florida, and when you meet with any of the members of our team, you will find that they share the same true feelings and want to make your transaction as stressfree as possible,” Karla added.
Because of her many experiences in the past and passion for what she and her beloved husband did - Karla has brought some of the MMA with her into the real estate world when she brought former UFC fighter Rich Attonito aboard. When it comes to real estate, Karla and her team are on top of it. From
