Tips to keep kids’ minds as active as their bodies (ARA) - As the days get longer and warmer, families can look forward to more outdoor playtime, as well as the promise of road trips and vacations. While the warmer months are a time children look forward to all year, they can also mean interrupted schedules and decreased attention to studying. However, there are plenty of opportunities to keep kids’ minds engaged, even when they want to play the days away. For parents, there are some special concerns when it comes to how their children spend time during the warmer months. Schedules and routines are often changed, which can make it difficult to keep activities and meal times on track. It’s especially important to ensure that everyone has access to fresh, high-quality foods made with real ingredients, which provide energy throughout the day. A few initiatives to keep
everyone satisfied and ready for fun will ensure that your family makes the most of the warmer months. Keep these ideas in mind and make them a part of your family’s schedule to keep kids physically and mentally active. • See the great outdoors on a weekend camping trip or a daylong hiking excursion. Both setting up camp and hiking in the wilderness combine active fun and learning. Bring nature guides that give you detailed information about the trees, plants, animals and insects that live in the area and try to identify the things you see. Children’s museums are a great choice, but it’s also a good idea to check in with art, science and other museums to see if they have special familyoriented programs or exhibits, as many often do. Some museums even waive entry fees during summer or provide discounted
rates. Whether you’re out enjoying the sunshine and natural beauty of the season or inside on one of those occasional rainy days, fun and learning can go hand-in-

Do you know your child could be a target for identity theft? it can be very difficult to discover how the fraud first occurred. How can you help prevent it? Parents can take a number of steps to help prevent their children from becoming identity theft victims: • Store your children’s Social Security cards in a safe place like a safety deposit box. Only give out your children’s Social Security number when it’s absolutely necessary, and provide alternate verification whenever possible. • Teach your children to never reveal personal information to anyone, no matter how trustworthy that person may seem. People close to the family are often found to be perpetrators in child identity theft cases. • If your child receives pre-approved credit card offers in the mail, you may want to check in with a credit reporting agency or Social Security. If you’ve been contacted by a collection agency regarding an account in your child’s name, there’s a possibility your child’s identity was stolen. • Consider signing up your family members for a credit monitoring and identity protection solution such as the Equifax Complete(TM) Family Plan, which can help to protect two adults and up to four minor children. With this product, you will be notified of any changes or suspicious activity on your adult credit files; in addition, you can monitor your minor child’s identifying information for existence of an Equifax credit file and lock it, thereby preventing creditors from accessing this file while the child is enrolled in the plan. Then as he’s getting ready to head off to college and applies for financial aid, he’s unexpectedly rejected for financial aid due to poor credit. Yet he’s never applied for credit in his life. Sounds outrageous, doesn’t it? But this can happen to victims of child identity theft. Most Americans are aware that identity theft is a significant problem, and that it’s important to take measures to protect your identity. What people might not know is their children may also be targets of identity theft before they even become old enough to own a credit card. The Federal Trade Commission has identified child identity theft as a growing problem and encourages parents to do what they can to minimize the risks to their children. How does it happen? The most common way a criminal can steal or misuse the identity of a child is to get access to the child’s Social Security number. The perpetrator then uses the Social Security number to open credit card accounts or loans, rent an apartment, sign up for utilities like cell phone service, or even apply for a job. Credit issuers often don’t have a way to verify the age of the applicant, so if the criminal changes the age of the identity associated with your child, it’s possible that the issuer may approve them for credit, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. Once an account has been established in your child’s name, it’s easier for criminals to establish subsequent accounts until this fraud is discovered. If your child’s identity is stolen at an early age and the theft goes undiscovered until she reaches the age where she begins to establish her own credit,

Exercise for healthy aging (ARA) - Sixty-year-old Ester Kurz does a lot of things, but taking prescribed medicine isn’t one of them. While most people her age take a pill for one thing or another, Kurz, from Baltimore, self-prescribes exercise for healthy aging. On a daily basis Kurz, who will turn 61 in June, goes to the Life Time Fitness in Rockville, Md., to enjoy everything from boot camp to yoga. Her favorite day is Monday, she says, when she goes from kickboxing to indoor cycling class to boot camp. “Each year, I seem to up the number and types of routines,” she boasts. Kurz’s attitude is counter to the majority of her peers. Just 30 percent of people between ages 45 and 64 say they engage in regular leisure-time physical activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2010 National Interview Survey. As people get older, they move even less: 25 percent are active between the ages 65 and 74 and only 11 percent of those 85 and older say they are active. That’s a problem because studies indicate there’s a correlation between activity and a lower death rate in older adults. “Healthy aging is the ability to maintain
your mental, physical and cellular health,” says Jason Stella, a personal trainer at Life Time Fitness, The Healthy Way of Life Company. “The process of aging is inevitable, but the choices you make, good or bad, throughout your lifetime dictate the rate at which you will age and the positive or negative health affects you develop.” In particular, Stella says behaviors that sabotage healthy aging include eating processed foods, taking too many medications, not controlling stress and inactivity. “I have had almost no injuries and very few aches and pains other than when I push myself too hard,” Kurz says. In addition to staying physically active, Kurz is a lobbyist for a grassroots advocacy organization, a wife and mother of two sons, ages 19 and 21, as well as a volunteer with several organizations. “A few years ago, I fell down a flight of stairs and, other than a few bruises and scrapes, did very little damage to my body,” Kurz says. “I have to believe exercise had a great deal to do with that.” Regular exercise and physical activity are critical to helping older adults stay
independent as they age. Strengthening bone and joint health to protect mobility is all the motivation most active older adults need to exercise. Kurz appreciates those benefits, too, but likes the added challenges. In February she competed in the Life Time Fitness Alpha Showdown, a national competition that tests the body’s core energy systems: power, strength and endurance. Most competitors were much younger than Kurz. “I did not win,” she says, “But I don’t think I came in last either, which
was an achievement.” Firmly in the second half of her life, Kurz is certain she has never been healthier or felt stronger. Life Time Fitness is part of her health aging program, but the facilities, programming and events cater to all ages and abilities, from those new to an exercise routine to those who are emphatic believers in exercise as good medicine, like Kurz. “Every checkup, my doctor asks me, ‘Still exercising like crazy?’” she says. “And then he adds, ‘keep it up.’”

FEELING THIRSTY?
