A Six Hour Adventure Social Citizens Visit Coconut Grove and Coral Gables By Cesar A. Becerra
beer back in 1938. As we meandered down Biscayne Boulevard which Seth reminded all that on early maps it was just written as “Boulevard”. A big theme that day was to heed caution as to the true origins of any story passed down. Such was the case with the iconic Sears Tower - now encased in the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center - had in fact also held a portion of the building for for Burdines – the true Florida Store! At the Miami News Tower which was built in 1925 we learned that it was built on the very spot the Florida East coast railway Miami station was located. The tracks that ran along side the News Tower, later and now known as The Freedom Tower crossed Biscayne and over to the port. “In the original days of the FEC, if you were heading on to Havana you would stay on the train and it would continue onto the port and you would board right on to your awaiting ship.” Part of the charm of heading out on a tour with Seth or any guide that Dennis adopts is that you are sure to rethink all you know and be careful to deduce what would seem on the surface the way they went down rather than to dig a bit more for the facts. Our entry into Coconut Grove began on picturesque South Bayshore Drive and a quick visit to the old Pan American Airlines Ticketing Station and waiting room. The group marveled at the process that Seth explained on how divers literally had to go below the water line and attach cables to tractors who would then bring the mighty
waterplanes up and onto the ramps. Around the corner we got to hear of the stalemate involved in one of Miami greatest theatres – The Coconut Grove Playhouse and a bit about the Peacocks and Munroes both important pioneer families that impacted the
early days on the bay where the water and narrow trails were the only form of transportation. By noon it was time to help digest all these great facts and anecdotes with a tough decision at Fritz& Franz Bierhaus of Coral Gables. The German/ Austrian restaurant

Photographer David Gartner organized a group photo before we left to the University of Miami and a brief visit to Temple Judea before we headed back to Sunny Isles. On a crisp beautiful sunny day with a slight breeze, 37 curious tour participants set off on a six hour bus adventure, copiloted by President: Dennis Stubbolo & Sunny Isles Beach former Mayor: Norman S. Edelcup. The Social Citizens of Southeast Florida is a group of over a hundred members who get together two to four times a month for lunches and trips. The tour guide on that day was historian Seth Bramson with his unlimited facts and figures plus his witty humor and occasional entertaining anecdotes. On the eve of his 32nd book currently at the printers entitled “Lost Restaurants of Greater Miami” Bramson began an intermittent flow of stories to illustrate two mythical and sometimes misunderstood communities of Miami - Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. Bramson began by wasting no time on what could have been a dull commute to Coconut Grove. Seth first appologized for Miami’s infamous traffic “As you know there used to be highways and roads in Miami, now there are just obstacles, so welcome to our modern day obstacle Interstate 95” His point could not have been more timely, as we crawled to a halt he explained why road warriors keep noticing “William Singer Highway” turns out - according to Seth who never quotes hearsay or conjecture – that Singer, aside from being instrumental in his position on the state board of Highways was also a business owner who birthed Royal Castle with its 5 cent burgers and root

GRATEFUL FOR HER ‘NEW’ VISION Braverman Eye Center Patient Tsion ‘CeCe’ Etsubneh Can See Perfectly
MARCH 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8
Hollywood - She may be just 26 years old, but Tsion ‘CeCe’ Etsubneh cannot express how happy she is with her vision. With a recent Lasik Surgery done at the state-of-the-art Braverman Eye Center in Hollywood, “CeCe” wanted to brag a little bit about her life changes. For the past 23 years, she has suffered with poor vision, having to wear glasses and contacts along the way. Because youngsters are subjected to being made fun of by other students, school was never much fun. “When you are a kid, all you know is that a majority of the other children are not wearing glasses and not being made fun of all the time,” she explained. “When you are that young, there is no understanding or compassion. Your first instinct is to make fun of something that is not familiar to you.” Children all over the world, who suffer with vision problems endure a lot of tough times while growing up, and CeCe, who wore contacts for years, was no different. It was always a battle of emotions - and often fighting something she had little control of at the time. From trips to Hawaii to scuba diving - to other things that wearing corrective lenses would hold her back from, CeCe was tired of the restrictions - and decided to do something about it. Years ago, her stepfather had the pleasure of crossing paths with one of the best, Dr. Stanley Braverman, who recommended him for surgery. The experience was such a positive one, that when CeCe’s high myopia (nearsightedness) got worse, there was no other choice. No matter what age, when it has to do with our eyesight, it is always that fear of the unknown. It’s only natural to feel apprehensive when it comes to our eyes. “I cannot tell you how amazing the entire experience was,” CeCe explained. “Everything
Tsion ‘CeCe’ Etsubneh cannot express how happy she is with her vision. Because of Dr. Stanley Braverman and the staff at Braverman Eye Center the 26-year-old is seeing better than ever. about Dr. Braverman and his staff was first class and truly something that changed my life. Many my age do not have this done. Not so early in their life.” From the initial meeting with Dr. Braverman - to a sit-down with Rosemary Hartford (Refractive Surgery Coordinator) going over the entire procedure CeCe became a different person. After watching her stepfather have Lasik done, she was sold. “The procedure was quick and I never felt anything,” she recalled. “The best part of it was a few days later, I was ready to do everything that I had done before - and much more.” Having the surgery done especially at such a young age you tend to notice how things change around you. Something so common as getting out of the house in the morning, reading
signs and billboards and just objects around you. “Anyone who is ever faced with this decision - like I was - do your research and see what is best for you,” she pointed out. “I fully recommend Dr. Braverman and his staff. They are professional all the way. For CeCe Etsubneh, a lifetime of rollercoaster emotions have been put to rest with a visit to Hollywood and the Braverman Eye Center. Z-LASIK SURGERY What To Expect With Z-lasik Surgery All Laser Z-Lasik surgery is performed on a patient’s cornea, which provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer
LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision. About Dr. Stanley Braverman Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of
Miami School of Medicine’s Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/ Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is also an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Nova Southeastern School of Optometry and the official LASIK and Cataract Surgeon for the Florida Panthers. Along with treating patients, Dr. Braverman, a board certified ophthalmologist, has been a medical researcher, and is the inventor of several eye surgical instruments, and author of many articles for medical journals. Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure (Laser Assisted Cataract Extraction) provides the best possible cataract surgical results. He has lectured at professional meetings about upgraded lens implants, advanced cataract surgery and LASIK, both nationally and internationally. He has been recognized by Newsweek Magazine as one of the Fifteen Leaders in Laser Eye Surgery in 2011, and recently co-authored a book on Z-Lasik that is being distributed internationally. You can find it on Amazon.com. An initial cataract, LASIK or Collagen Cross Linking consultation can be scheduled by calling the Braverman Eye Center at: (954) 458-2112 or (305) 374-8694. Memories of Elvis A Breathtaking Tribute To The King of Rock-N-Roll
MARCH 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 12
Anyone who has had the pleasure of watching Chris MacDonald’s highly successful Memories of Elvis in Concert, has left wanting more. One of the best tribute events around, MacDonald and his well attended show has brought memories, tears and smiles from those who have fallen in love with Elvis and what he meant to generations and generations of fans. South Floridians: the wait is over as this show that sold out the last two trips to Miami-Dade and Broward is coming back. On Saturday, March 28th, at 7:30pm at the Aventura Arts & Culture Center. The show will be packed with fans who will see a show that everyone has loved from coast-to-coast. Join Chris MacDonald and his dynamic band and dancers for a full production memorial tribute that will be sure to have you tapping your feet and singing along to those hits that created a buzz all over the world. On August 16, 1977, we lost one of the greatest entertainers and pop culture icons of all time. Gone but never forgotten, his image, music, films and memory live on as a testament to his true effect and influence on his generation and future generations to come. The original American Idol who influenced the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and anyone that has ever picked up a guitar or a microphone since, continues to engage in our love affair with his All American story of a shy poor and humble country boy that became the King of Rock-n-Roll. Keeping the memory alive at countless venues throughout the country, Chris MacDonald lovingly shares the magic of the “King of Rock-n-Roll” with his tribute Memories of Elvis in Concert, Chris’s show is not an overdone impersonation. It is a natural heartfelt tribute to a legendary performer and music icon. With his high energy concert band, Chris MacDonald draws his audience in with the look, sounds, and nuances that made Elvis, the King of Rock-n-Roll! Adding to the authenticity of his tribute, Chris has the honor of being the only tribute artist hired by Elvis Presley Enterprises to perform at Graceland’s Heartbreak Hotel. An energetic and experienced entertainer, MacDonald has also starred in the famous LEGENDS IN
CONCERT stage productions and has performed in Branson, MO, and Las Vegas, NV. He has also performed in Concert with Elvis Presley’s original back up group The Jordanaires and D.J. Fontana. With this always updated multi-media production, the show will include costume changes, songs and video clips telling the story of the different stages of Elvis’s incredible career including the 1950’s, the Movies, the 1968 Comeback and the 1970’s White Fringe Vegas Concerts. It’s all a part of this loving tribute to one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Bring the whole family out to share the music and Memories of Elvis.
Mom Was A Huge Inspiration Chris MacDonald’s love for music came from his mother. She was the one person who had a great understanding and passion for some of the most iconic performers of all time. While growing up and using some of that knowledge his mother shared with him, the legend that was - and still is Elvis Presley - was indeed someone that MacDonald seemed to embrace. His music, style and overall way his entire presence captured audiences - of all ages. That inspiration, and understanding the impact that Presley made, was what motivated MacDonald and drove him to be a performer. Not just someone who
would imitate Presley, but pay tribute to a man who gave so many the best of his talents as a singer, actor and a giving man. Sharing Some Memorable Experiences What makes this show extra special, and has indeed thrilled and entertained so many, is that MacDonald not only sings and performs, but his knowledge and the history of Elvis Presley’s life, gives him a chance to relate stories to the audiences about every song and the meaning behind them. During the concert, MacDonald

He has also headlined with Elvis’ own original back up group, the Jordanaires and D.J Fontana (Presley’s original drummer) at the famous Hard Rock Live Concert Arena.
“When you perform songs such as That’s All Right or Blue Suede Shoes, Don’t Be Cruel and Jailhouse Rock and tell a story or relate something to the audience about each and everyone, it truly brings out the best of everything we are doing,” MacDonald said. A Full Production Show Awaits With a playlist that has everyone dancing in their seats, MacDonald truly puts on a show that can only be described as a full evening of song, history and a tribute to one of the best ever. His full production show sells out venues throughout the country. The show is not a parody or an overdone impersonation. It is a natural, heartfelt tribute to an American Icon and his music. COVID-19 is a new disease and there is more to learn about how it spreads, the severity of illness it causes, and to what extent it may spread in the United States. As of this week Florida has over 30 presumptive positive COVID19 cases. Now is not a time for panic, it is a time for education, and action to protect yourself and to limit the possible spread. Spread From Contact With Infected Surfaces or Objects It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Can Someone Spread The Virus Without Being Sick? People are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest). Some spread might be possible
before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. How Easily Does The Virus Spread? How easily a virus spreads from person-toperson can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (spread easily), like measles, while other viruses do not spread as easily. Another factor is whether the spread is sustained. The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected. Symptoms Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe ill-
navirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
ness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases. Symptoms may appear 214 days after exposure, fever, cough, & shortness of breath. Person-To-Person Spread The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). It is thought to spread mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be

inhaled into the lungs. Follow the CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask: • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility). There is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 should receive supportive care to help relieve symptoms. For severe cases, treatment should include care to support vital organ functions. People who think they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Prevention & Treatment There is currently no vaccine to prevent coro-
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty. CDC Tests for COVID-19 The CDC has developed a new laboratory test kit for use in testing patient specimens for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. The test kit is called the “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time Reverse
Transcriptase (RT)-PCR Diagnostic Panel.” On Monday, February 3, 2020 the CDC submitted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) package to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to expedite the FDA permitted use of the CDC diagnostic panel in the United States. The EUA process enables the FDA to consider and authorize the use of unapproved, but potentially life-saving medical or diagnostic products during a public health emergency. The U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services declared the SARS-CoV-2 virus a U.S. public health emergency on Friday, January 31, 2020. Th FDA issued the EUA on February 4, 2020, and they began distribution of the test kits to states, but shortly thereafter performance issues were identified related to a problem in the manufacturing of one of the reagents which led to laboratories not being able to verify the test performance. The CDC is remanufacturing the reagents with more robust quality control measures. The new tests are being distributed. The CDC continues to perform initial and confirmatory testing in the meantime. Call your healthcare professional if you develop symptoms, and have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or if you have recently traveled from an area with widespread or ongoing community spread of COVID-19. The best protection is to follow the Centers For Disease Control & Prevention guidelines, wash your hands, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

HEALTH
Take the flu seriously: A challenge to older Americans (BPT) - Alice Vaught skipped her flu shot one season. That was the year she got the flu. “I felt like I was dying. Within a couple hours I was unable to move. It came on so quickly, and I wasn’t aware of how severe it was.” Unfortunately, the flu often strikes quickly and without warning, potentially leading to severe and sometimes lifethreatening health problems. It’s an infectious disease that must be taken seriously - especially by those who are most vulnerable.
Flu can take a terrible toll Anyone can get the flu. However, some people have an increased risk of flu and flurelated complications, including young children, pregnant women, adults 50 years of age and older, and people living with chronic health conditions, such as lung or heart disease,
diabetes and cancer. This comprises a significant number of people. In fact, 70 percent of adults ages 50 to 64 have at least one chronic illness according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Brian Pelletier had type 2 diabetes, a severe lung disease and other chronic health conditions when the flu landed him in the hospital at the age of 52. “It was the first time I was really sick in over a decade. My medication that I was taking had been managing everything just fine, and my conditions didn’t slow me down too much,” said Pelletier. “I was active, but that bout with the flu really set me back.” Flu can disrupt everyday life The CDC estimates that the flu virus causes between 9 million and 49 million flu-
related illnesses each year. It can worsen symptoms of respiratory disorders, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Vaught is one of many who have caught the flu while living with asthma. “Everything was worse when I got the flu, especially my asthma. I remember losing 7 or 8 pounds and could barely lift my head,” she said. JoJo O’Neal, a radio personality and fitness advocate who lives with asthma, had to stop everything when she was struck with the flu twice in one season. She took several days off work, rescheduled important meetings and missed out on personal commitments. “It felt like a truck ran over me,” said O’Neal. “It took over 10 days for me to finally feel better. I even had to cancel a meeting with the asthma support group I facilitate!”
It’s not too late to vaccinate Vaccination is the best way to help protect against the flu. Health officials recommend all people ages 6 months and older, with rare exception, get vaccinated each year. This is particularly important for adults 50 years of age and older. That’s why the American Lung Association launched the MyShot campaign in collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur. The initiative empowers older adults to ask their healthcare providers about which flu shot options may help offer a greater level of protection against the flu based on their age and chronic health conditions. It’s not too late to get your shot. Vaccination throughout the fall and winter - and even into the spring - can help protect against the flu while the virus is circulating.
Help protect yourself and loved ones Getting your flu shot doesn’t just help keep you healthy. It also helps protect others around you, including your friends, family, co-workers and people in your community. O’Neal learned this the hard way when she passed the flu to her sister, who has COPD. “I’d never had the flu before, and my eyes are now open,” said O’Neal. “I started to realize that my health decisions impact others around me. I never want to go through that experience again.” For Pelletier, he also now takes extra precautions following his wrenching flu experience. “Anytime someone is in my home, I make sure they have gotten their flu shot.” If you or someone you love is 50 years of age or older, go to GetMyShot.org and speak with your healthcare provider.

REAL ESTATE Are you protecting your digital house from cybercrime? (BPT) - As the pace of technology advances, cybersecurity threats do, too. Data breaches, identity theft, phishing and malware make headlines seemingly every day. Internet-connected devices, social media, digital assistants and mobile apps have become indispensable in our everyday lives, but their connectedness makes us increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks. Recent reports estimate that damages relating to cybercrime are expected to hit $6 trillion annually by 2021. “It’s impossible to predict when you will be affected by cybercrime,” says Bashar Abouseido, chief information security officer for Charles Schwab Corp. “The best defense is to stay informed.” It can be helpful to envision your computer and digital devices as a house where you store your personal data. Now is a good time to make sure your digital house is secure. The first step is to
understand the ways cybercriminals may attempt to access your data. Types of cybercrimes Data breaches occur when there is unauthorized access to sensitive personal information. These incidents often make headline news and can affect large numbers of consumers. Malicious software, also known as malware, spyware, ransomware and viruses, refers to software programs designed with the purpose of gaining unauthorized access to a mobile app, digital device or computer. Phishing is one of the most common forms of online fraud and cybercrime. Cybercriminals try to lure you with a fake email sent from what they have designed to appear to be a trusted source or contact that encourages you to click a link or open an attachment in order to extract personal account information.

3 tips to protect your digital house 1. Remodel your digital house: Installing updates is an essential first step. Think of system updates as basic maintenance to your digital house that is keeping your personal data safe. It can be annoying to see those system update prompts on your computer or mobile device, but software developers are constantly improving their software to repel the latest malware. By keeping your operating system and apps updated, you are making sure that your digital house is as secure as possible. 2. Don’t have a leaky house: Be wary of public Wi-Fi networks Using public - and often free - Wi-Fi networks is convenient, but it is a common entry point for criminals to use malware to infect your devices and apps. Use only networks you trust or use your own personal Wi-Fi hotspot if you have one. Never update your devices when you are connected to a public Wi-Fi network. 3. Don’t open that door: Delete suspicious emails. That knock on your cyber front door is the sound of a cybercriminal sending you a phishing email. Be suspicious of emails that come from unknown senders. Use your cursor to hover over questionable links and email addresses to reveal the true identity of the link or sender. When in doubt, don’t click on any links or open any attachments and delete the email immediately. For more info on more ways to protect yourself from cybercrimes, visit SchwabSafe.
