SERVICES OF A NURSE REGISTRY By Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care
Thank you for your questions. These are some recent ones : I see that Always Classic Care is a Nurse Registry. Can a Nurse Registry provide home health services? Absolutely. We provide professional nurses to assess your needs and aides who are carefully screened for the home or for private duty while in the hospital. As an example, Always Classic Care was referred a case a few weeks ago. The client had recent falls and the family was asking for 24-hour assistance in the home. We interviewed the family member as to the patient’s personality, medical condition and personal needs. Learning that the patient had long term care insurance, our staff helped the family initiate insurance, and assigned an appropriate aide in record time. Our RN visited the client within 3 hours since there was a safety issue involved (usual RN visit is within 48 hours). Upon assessment, the nurse advised the client to go to the ER and reported the same to her family. The client was admitted. Her aide was able to stay with her in the hospital, assisted with her transfer home, and home care for her is now ongoing. This continuity of care is of utmost importance in situations like this. It is of tremendous benefit for the patient and provides confidence for her family, who live
out of the area and feel assured that their mom is being taken care of under supervision of a professional nurse registry with whom they can communicate. I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. Can you help me with this? These are considered private services. Always Classic Care can provide them for you with carefully screened people at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost. We refer only housecleaners and drivers who have been put through a rigorous interview process with excellent references, prior to our recommending them. Excellent care and safety for our clients is our primary mission. Hope this has been helpful. With my 20+ years of experience as a cardiac and home health nurse, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding home health. Please feel free to email me at terry@alwaysclassiccare.com or call me at 305403-2622. I am here for you.

A Dramatic Change In Vision For Dr. Henry Cherrick Retired Dean of UCLA School of Medicine, Seeing Colors For The First Time In 10 Years!
MARCH 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8
Hollywood - You will have to excuse Dr. Henry Cherrick if he spends more time than usual looking at the lake behind his home. For nearly 10 years - both of his eyes had started to develop cataracts - and while he really never noticed that things were going downhill - it took a trip to the DMV to change everything. He then realized that he had been slowly losing his vision. “I knew I was having problems with my left eye,” Dr. Cherrick said. “When I failed the eye test to get my license renewed; that was it. Something had to be done - I was not living a quality life, not being able to see very well.” When his own ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Lane suggested he go visit Dr. Stanley Braverman at The Braverman Eye Center’s new state-of-the-art facility in Hollywood, it was indeed a life-changing decision. “From the first time my wife and I met with Dr. Braverman, it was amazing,” Dr. Cherrick, 78, said. “He not only found that I needed to get my left eye done, but said I had cataracts in both eyes.” Because of the pre-surgery workup (chest X-ray, EKG, etc.) that is required for cataract procedures, Dr. Cherrick opted to have both surgeries done within three weeks - and the results completely blew this one time dean of dental and medicine at UCLA, completely away. “I really never have had problems with my eyes in the past - other than wearing glasses for the past 30 years,” Dr. Cherrick said. “Someone who was a pathologist like myself and constantly putting my eyes to use with a microscope, sharp eyesight has never been an option.” But even though he felt that his eye sight has always been okay, after the left eye, Dr. Cherrick’s opinion changed - in a hurry. “I have to tell you that having that left eye done was amazing,” he recalled. “From watching a video to going over all the scenarios, I was ready and anxious. The results were impressive - to say the least” with the Symphony Extended Depth of Focus lens implant. While it took just over five days to see things starting to come into “focus” - Dr. Cherrick began noticing improvement immediately. In fact, on the sixth day, he started to see things like never before. “I could not recall ever seeing colors as vivid and sharp,” he said. “I also could read the paper without glasses, which I really had never been able to do. I was
ready to get the other eye done.” I didn’t even think I had a cataract in my right eye until I had the left eye done and realized how poorly I was seeing out of the unoperated eye. The second eye surgery came three weeks later and after that surgery, life has never been better. He can now see colors - vibrant and bold - and things that he never realized existed before - are indeed a major focal point. “I had worn a shirt for years and never realized it was blue,” he laughed. “I can sit outside all day and look at the colors and everything I never noticed before. I also find myself watching a lot of TV to see those colors pop out like never before.” With both surgeries out of the way, Dr. Cherrick and his wife are living a great life and this time around - seeing everything. “I cannot say enough about the staff at the Braverman Eye Center,” Dr. Cherrick explained. “My wife and I love Dr. Braverman!”

Harvest Reapers Outreach Support Ministry Cares A Voice For The Next Generation To Prosper, Learn
MARCH 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10
Hollywood - What Senior Pastor Dorothy Roberts and her husband Scott Roberts have found out in the years of helping so many stay on their feet, it is a never ending process. What they have been able to do from their Harvest Reapers Outreach Support Ministry in Hollywood is dig down deep for finances, helping thousands with everything possible and plenty of prayer for nearly three decades. Dorothy, the president and co-owner of Vandor Geriatric Homecare Inc., as well as Pastor of Harvest Reapers Outreach Support Ministry - and the Harvest Reapers Single Parent Ministry - has been a major advocate where no single parent walks alone (mom/ dad). They are also a food feeding Ministry. The numbers are staggering and the reality of being a single parent in a world filled with many obstacles along the way can be daunting - to even the toughest and most determined. According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau, while the majority of America’s 73.7 million children, under age 18, live in families with two parents, the second most common family arrangement is children living with a single parent, more than 80% of which were headed by single mothers. “You look at those statistics
and they are real - and we face them every day,” Dorothy explained. “We see these single parents that need and we can assist. Many are too proud - and they are the ones we can make their lives much easier.” To understand what makes Dorothy special, is to see where she came from. Born in the parish of Manchester in Jamaican, she comes from a family of nine. With six girls and three boys, education was always a priority in the family - and raising four beautiful children and eight grandchildren, her legacy continues. With her husband, Scott, they have been running Harvest Reapers Ministry, offering some much needed relief to those in need. From grocery assistance, in conjunction with Feeding South Florida, to clothing assistance and counseling, they have been here to make an impact and help those who need it the most. “We’re happy to help others in our community - in any way possible.” Dorothy pointed out. “We are here to make a difference in someone’s life - for the better. We always continue to look for ways to positively impact our brothers and sisters, neighbors and friends.” Dorothy certainly practices what she preaches, especially with her divorce well over three
decades ago. Because of her strong belief in family and the support they can give, it wasn’t until they had graduated college that she told her children that she and their father were divorced. “Children do not need to be in the middle of parents at war,” Dorothy explained. “They need to live a healthy life. We brought them into this world not to traumatize them, but to love and nurture them.” The mission for families, youth and community enrichment is to empower them with resources and information needed to promote a high level of common sense to go along with education for their children. If you don’t have common sense, you cannot apply your education to the real world! “Common sense keeps one out of jail,” Dorothy pointed out. “Common sense doesn’t pump drugs in our bodies. Common sense does not bully, common sense does not kill their brothers and sisters. Of course, to be intelligent is a nice bonus, but it’s not what makes a person. Common sense equals love. Common sense is: good sense and sound judgment in practical matters.” Why should I care about Family and Community involvement in schools? Schools, parents and the
community should work together to promote the health, well-being and learning of all students. When schools actively involve parents and engage community resources, they are able to respond more effectively to the health-related needs of students. Family, youth and community involvements foster partnerships among schools, family and community groups, and individuals. These partnerships result in sharing and maximizing resources. And they help children and youth develop healthy behaviors and promote healthy, vibrant, caring and loving communities. GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM Students who do not earn a high school diploma are more likely to: face unemployment, live in poverty, be incarcerated, earn half as much annual income as a high school graduate, have children at an early age; use illicit drugs, tobacco, or both. “It takes a village to raise a child is a popular proverb with a clear message,” Dorothy pointed out. “The whole community has an essential role to play in the growth and development of its young people. In addition to the vital role that parents and family members play in a child’s education, the broader community
too has a responsibility to assure high-quality education for all students”. Her husband, Scott, cofounder of Harvest Reapers Ministry, has been a huge part of offering grocery assistance for 30 years - and is equally as excited for the single parents program, assisting those who may be quietly struggling. He is also a major part in everything that goes on in the community, In the past, parent involvement was characterized by volunteers, mostly mothers, assisting in the classroom, chaperoning students, and fundraising. Today, the old model has been replaced with a much more inclusive approach: schoolfamily-community partnerships now include mothers and fathers, stepparents, grandparents, foster parents, other relatives and caregivers, business leaders and community groups– all participating in goal-oriented activities, at all grade levels, linked to student achievement and school success. ABOUT HARVEST REAPERS OUTREACH Feeding the hungry, the impoverished, the unemployed and the ill is what Harvest Reapers Outreach has always been about. Their feeding programs help strengthen the faith of their volunteers as well as those who receive the meals they provide.
“Harvest Reapers Ministry allows for a collective effort such as a feeding ministry to encourage hope,” Dorothy explained. “Today, they may be one of those standing in line to get their meals. We hope that tomorrow, they will find the courage to stand up, get their act together and
find work – so that in the future, they will be one of our volunteers. This is how we feed faith, making it stronger for those who are being fed and those who

Love-In Music Festival Takes Center Stage At Historic Greynolds Park, March 31 By Larry Blustein • Aventura Digest
MARCH 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 14
North Miami Beach - If you grew up in North Miami-Dade County back in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, there was a special landmark that you knew very well. Nestled in one of south Florida’s few natural habitats - where animals still roam free with the many, many visitors there is Greynolds Park. What has long been a destination for families and those who share the passion for outdoors and wilderness, Greynolds Park is a destination that people head to from everywhere. On Sunday, March 31st, an annual event will take place when the past becomes the present as the now famous Greynolds Park Love-In, Party in the Park event, will write another chapter in what has brought people like Ernie Anderson and Marcy Phillips back to where they both used to hang out. Anderson, a North Miami High graduate, recalls all the great spots about the park - which plays right in with March 31st and the Love-In. “This was part of our growing up,” Anderson said. “Every year since they started this, we have come back and listened to bands like Steppenwolf, Foghat, Eddie Money, Atlanta Rhythm Section and so many other bands of our generation who are the same age as we are. This is truly an experience.” With performances by Havoc 305, Never Stop Believin’, a Journey tribute band, Keep the Faith, a Bon Jovi tribute band and US Stones, a Rolling Stones tribute band, the day offers much more.
In fact, with several booths and food trucks who attend - along with the classic car show - there is something for everyone of every age. There will also be a special appearance by Miami Country Day School band. Tickets are $15 for two admissions if you buy in advance. If you buy the day of the event, tickets are $15 each. Gates open at 10 a.m. It’s parks, music and nature – so come on out! For more information, call 305-945-3425. “The music is always a great lure, but at the end of the day, it’s everything else that the park has to offer,” Phillips explained. “I am 61 and grew up on the hill, near the boat docks and everywhere else on the property. This was where I grew up and brought my children to - and now the three grandchildren that I have.” The “hill,” which is one of the most notable features at Greynolds Park is actually the “Observation Mound.” Standing at 46 feet above sea-level, it was once the highest land point in Dade County. To many visitors’ surprise, the mound did not occur naturally as it is mostly a large pile of abandoned rockcrushing machinery, railroad ties, and limestone leftover from property owner Mr. A.O. Greynolds’ quarry. A walled lookout platform was eventually built to topoff the structure with spiraling walkways and staircases leading to its summit. Hours of Operation: Sunrise - Sunset Office Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Sunday Boathouse By reservations only. THERE’S MORE TO EXPLORE In addition to the many trails that makes exploring fun, Greynolds Park is also home to a popular golf course that provides a 3,100-yard challenging layout. This par-36 course, designed by Mark Mahannah in 1964, is one of the county’s most popular nine-hole designs for all levels of play. The course offers electric carts, reasonable green fees, and club rentals. A spacious clubhouse welcomes players to relax before and after matches. A friendly Pro Shop staff will assist players with tee times, rental equipment and merchandise. A single-rider golf cart is available for persons with disabilities (with 24 hours’ advance notice). Please call the golf shop to arrange for use of the single-rider golf cart. GOLF COURSE 17530 W Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, FL Hours of operation: 7 a.m. - Sunset 305-949-1741 CAMP GREYNOLDS The ideal location for overnight retreats in a natural setting without having to leave the city, Camp Greynolds is also a popular destination. The park sits on the banks of the Oleta River where
herons, ibis and egrets can be spied on among the majestic mangroves. The parks’ woods are lined with several hiking trails that lead to grand oaks, tropical plants, wild flowers, colorful butterflies, and a host of creatures including owls, bats, and raccoons. Make your stay even more memorable by adding a natural adventure to your experience at Camp Greynolds. Campers can wake up to the sounds of songbirds, scale the observation mound to look over the beauty of the park, hike the historic grounds which were once trekked by Tequesta Indians, take a leisurely canoe trip in the Park’s lagoon or journey into Oleta River. Enjoyment can be felt from the camaraderie of friends and colleagues telling ghost stories around the campfire ring. Saxophonist Gregory LéDon Plays Classics & Originals Acclaimed saxophonist, flautist and composer Gregory LéDon calls for world peace by way of jazz in this performance at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center. LéDon takes his mission seriously: At one time, he was confined to a hospital bed with blood clots in his lungs, and he prayed for healing with the promise that he would use his musical gifts to change the world. And ever since his recovery, that’s what he’s done, performing remarkable renditions of original songs and classic favorites with a group of talented musicians backing him up. Selections like Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue,” Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia” and the magic of John Coltrane’s iconic style with the reggae wonderment of Bob Marley will leave you delighted and entertained -- as will his powerhouse performance of “Hava Nagila.” As a master of music and purveyor of culture the world over, Gregory LéDon truly puts on a show that is not to

Dr. Adler Offers New Service For Diabetics By Marylynne Newmark
Foot ulcers, infections and gangrene are some of the major complications of diabetes. These symptoms can require hospitalization, and if left untreated, can result in amputation. One amputation can lead to another since blood circulation can be impeded. Simple pressure on a toe or other part of a foot enclosed in a shoe can develop into a diabetic ulcer. Other contributing factors that can form ulcers in the diabetic patient include toe deformities (bunions), calluses, edema and peripheral vascular disease. “The first sign of a pressure ulcer is a red spot, such as a corn that does not turn white when pressure is applied,” says Dr. Charlton Adler, wound care specialist in North Miami Beach. “For someone with diabetes, this should be a next-day visit to a podiatrist,” he adds. “By assessing any of these suspicious areas, the podiatrist can prevent the type of symptom that is diagnosed as a Stage One of a diabetic ulcer.” Dr. Charlton Adler has been at the forefront of preventive care for patients
with diabetes for decades. He even goes beyond that as a specialist with an impressive record of healing non-healing wounds in his practice and at Aventura Hospital Wound Care Center. He has even been commended professionally for his work in preventing limb amputation by his methods of healing wounds. “But for the patient’s sake, prevention is a far better option,” says Dr. Adler. “innocent pressure from shoes can lead to neuropathies that create pain or numbness, leading to poor circulation and edema. Lack of feeling when there is pressure can be a fast track to an ulcer,” he added. Aside from therapies and lifestyle changes that Dr. Adler can suggest, he now has advanced his preventive practice to include the professional fitting and support of diabetic shoes and bracing by a licensed Florida pedorthist and orthotic fitter who is qualified to fit all ankle and foot orthotics. Dr. Eric Saltsberg, with 30 years experience as a licensed specialist in prosthetics and orthotics in New York and New Jersey, is licensed in the state of Florida to fit all forms of orthotics and
back, foot and knee braces. He is now available by appointment in Dr. Adler’s office. “Foot care is of utmost importance for someone with diabetes,” says Dr. Adler. “A good starting practice is to wash and dry your toes and feet daily, and carefully inspect them each time. Be certain all of your shoes fit properly with no tightness or pressure and watch for those red spots on your toes, bunion areas and heels. “Also, he adds, “To avoid any breaking of skin while trimming your nails, always clip your nails with a clipper, never use Diplomat of the American Board of scissors.” Dr. Adler says that not all people with Podiatric Medicine, is a Diplomat of The diabetes require specialty shoes, but American Academy of Wound when they do, a professional fitting can Management as a Certified Wound Care be a life-saver. “Assessment by a Specialist Physician, a Diplomat of the podiatrist specializing in wound care American Board of Multiple Specialties in prevention would be the first step to make Podiatry Limb Preservation and Salvage that determination,” he adds. Are your home and your wallet prepared for the inevitable? (BPT) - Nobody bats an eyelash when it comes to buying homeowner’s insurance, but many homeowners don’t apply that same logic to planning for home repairs - not what might happen, but what will happen. Only a fraction of the 120 million U.S. households today are protected by a home services plan, also known as a home warranty. That number is growing, as homeowners recognize the value of coverage when appliances go on the fritz, hot water heaters run cold in the middle of winter or a leaky faucet drives up their water bill. Perhaps one reason more homeowners don’t have home service plans is because they think
they are covered through their homeowner’s insurance policy. Homeowner’s insurance doesn’t protect you from the natural home aging process. Insurance kicks in when damage occurs from an outside force, like a busted sewer line or roof damage due to a major storm. While insurance covers you when Mother Nature strikes, it doesn’t protect you from the natural wear and tear that your home’s major systems and appliances go through during the aging process. Understanding how home service plans work and how they fit into your financial and riskplanning strategy allows you to be prepared for cov-
ered breakdowns, without breaking the bank. Let’s start at the beginning. What is a home service plan? Home service plans typically cover the repair or replacement of major home appliances, including refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens or cooktops, and components of major systems like plumbing, HVAC and electrical. When your air conditioning system breaks, or your washer or dryer stops spinning, you want the confidence of having a home services plan in place that will help protect your budget. This is where the true value of a home service plan comes in. Home service providers such as
American Home Shield accept service requests and assign professionals to diagnose the problem and offer a solution through its vast network of skilled and trusted contractors, which includes more than 15,000 licensed and qualified pros throughout all 50 states. What’s the bottom line? With a home service plan, you won’t pay the full cost of repairing or replacing items covered by your plan. Regardless of age, make or model, your contract helps cover the repair or replacement of items covered in your plan. For example, if your refrigerator malfunctions, your service provider will connect you to a quality contractor to diagnose and
repair the problem. This can help reduce the hassle of repairing it yourself and help protect your budget. Think about your home’s future (and yours). Service plans can come in handy when selling a home. The appeal speaks for itself: When buyers are making that final decision around one of the biggest investments in their lives, having a home service plan in place gives the new homeowner confidence that the home’s systems and appliances are protected, and they won’t bear the entire financial impact of repairing or replacing it if it breaks
down. The choice seems obvious: Don’t fall victim to the financial risks and mental stresses associated with owning a home. Appliances have set lifespans, breakdowns are inevitable and repairs and replacements are costly.
Make sure your home is covered, so you and your wallet can rest assured that your home is taken care of.

3 tips to make your bathroom more inviting and functional (BPT) - We tend to think of the bathroom strictly as a utilitarian space, and therefore not worthy of the same energy and expense put into designing spaces like the living room or kitchen. We spend a lot of time in the bathroom, however. It’s the room where we start and set intentions for our day. In the evening, the bathroom is where we go to unwind some people prefer soaking in a bubble bath while others take a hot shower to relax after a long day.
How a bathroom is designed can dramatically affect your experience. Consider improving your daily ritual with these three upgrading tips. Design with ergonomics in mind Ergonomics is the process of designing and arranging spaces so that they fit with the people who use them. When making upgrades to your bathroom, it’s important to think through how you use the space each day. What a
functional design might look like to someone else could be inconvenient for you. Bathroom storage tends to be treated as onesize-fits-all. Many bathrooms have a vanity that contains deep cabinets. People with this basic storage solution are forced to use small containers to organize their products and often have to rummage through belongings to get what they need. An ergonomic bathroom considers what items you use most frequently, and is

designed to keep those items accessible. Consider adding a medicine cabinet to your bathroom to keep smaller products that get easily misplaced on hand. A vanity that offers a top drawer allows you to store everyday items, like a hair brush or toothpaste, up higher than a storage cabinet would, meaning you wouldn’t have to bend down as often. Find the best solutions through personalized designs The way that your bathroom is set up and how you use your bathroom are unique. It’s often difficult to find an off-the-shelf solution that gives you exactly what you want
from this space. Consider a solution instead that is customizable to your needs. Whether you’re working with a difficult bathroom layout or you feel limited by space constraints, modular designs help ensure you are able to meet your storage needs. Bring technology into the bathroom Technology plays a big role in most people’s lives, so it’s no surprise that it has started to pop up in bathroom designs, too. For example, defogging technology can be built into the vanity mirror to allow one person to shower while another is using the mirror. If you have products that need to be
charged, like an electric toothbrush or razor, consider installing USB ports inside the medicine cabinet to ensure your go-to items are always ready to use. Technology can bring entertainment into the bathroom as well. If you like to start off the day with some energetic music or unwind in the bath listening to your favorite podcast, Bluetooth technology can be the perfect way to add entertainment without sacrificing counter space. The bathroom plays an important role in your day-to-day life. Use these tips to design a functional space that best fits your needs and find more ideas for bathroom upgrades at www.robern.com.
