PresbyLasik: Correction for two kinds of vision problems New procedure can correct both Distance and Near Vision For years, the miracle of Lasik surgery for vision correction was almost always an either-or procedure. Patients who wanted to throw away their glasses or contact lenses but were old enough to require reading glasses on top of their distance correction, had to choose one kind of correction or the other for each eye. Now, a remarkable new procedure called PresbyLasik allows some patients to eliminate both problems. Jose Berrios, 64, and his wife, Alma Mazar-Berrios, 62, both qualified for the PresbyLasik procedure and are thrilled with the results. Jose, a Miami-Dade transit driver, began to require reading
glasses years ago. Then over time, he started to have trouble seeing at a distance as well, and needed either bifocals or two different pairs of glasses. “I was going for a vision test every two years, and the prescription would always change,” he recalls. “I was really tired of it.” One day, a co-worker told Jose about her daughter, who had had successful Lasik surgery by Dr. Stanley Braverman. Intrigued, he decided to pay a visit to Dr. Braverman at the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach. “I hoped I’d be able to quit wearing my glasses,” he says. As a bus driver, Jose needs to be able to see clearly, because the safety of his passengers can
depend on it. When he’s not working, he enjoys going to the firing range, a hobby that also requires keen distance vision. And when he relaxes at the couple’s home in Hialeah, he likes to surf the Internet, for which he needs clear close vision. He didn’t really expect to be able to have both problems corrected, but he was happily surprised. “Dr. Braverman gave me a complete eye exam,” Jose recalls. “Then he told me about the (PresbyLasik) procedure and said I’d be a good candidate.” Jose had the painless procedure and today, he can see

• Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that serveral types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. These include heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke and bacterial endocarditis. Some researchers believe that bacteria from gum disease can enter your bloodstream and travel through your arteries to your heart, affecting your cardiovascular system. Although periodontal disease seems to be associated with heart disease, more studies are needed before the link can be confirmed with certainty. • Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. Some research has shown that disease-causing organisms in a pregant woman’s mouth can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, possibly causing premature birth. Unfortunately, treating periodontal disease during pregnancy may be too late, because the infection may have already spread in the woman’s body. This is why it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health before you get pregnant. • Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth, and a variety of oral infections. Conversly, poor oral health can make your diabetes more difficult to control. Infections may cause your blood sugar to rise and require more insulin to keep it under control. • HIV/AIDS. In some cases, one of the first signs of AIDS may appear in your mouth, with several gum infections. You may also develop persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth. • Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist may be able to spot this on routine dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers. • Other conditions. Many other conditions may make their presence known in your mouth before you know anything’s wrong. These may include Sjogren’s syndrome, certain cancers, eating disorders, syphillis, gonorrhea and substance abuse. So you can see how very important regular dental visits are and how avoiding the dentist can have severely adverse
effects on your overall health. The truth is that the bacteria in the mouth replicate and double every 30 days reaching destructive levels in just 90 days-so people with gum disease can have bone loss in as little as 3 months! Research keeps finding new links between oral health and the health of your body every day. The latest study was done on pancreatic cancer. Here’s what they found: The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found that periodontal disease was associated with an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas. The study appeared in the January 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Data for the new study came from the Health Professional’s Follow-Up Study, which began in 1986 and includes 51,529 U.S. men working in the health professions. Participants respond to questionnares about their health every two years. After analyzing the data, the researchers confirmed 216 cases of pancreatic cancer between 1986 and 2002; of those 67 reported periodontal disease. The results showed that, after adjusting for a smoking, diabetes, body mass index and a number of other factors, men with periodontal disease had a 63% high risk or developing pancreatic cancer compared to those reporting no periodontal disease. “Most convincing was our finding that never-smokers had a two-fold increase in risk of pancreatic cancer,” said Michaud. So that’s the latest information about your mouth!! I know time slips by and seeking a dentist often gets put off until there is a problem or pain. I just wanted to let you know - we understand and don’t lecture our patients about haveing not been in for so long. The key thing is to take care of any problems, create a great re-care system fo you and make sure you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime which will in turn keep your whole body healthier!!

There are some cities where you don’t know what to do with a child, to keep your kid entertained while amusing yourself, whether you’re merely passing the time of every day or celebrating a very special vacation. But in Aventura, a city with family-oriented values and world-class shopping in the heart of paradise, there are fun, family activities every day of the year. Our family loves going to the Aventura Mall. My son, Jon, is 15 and he marvels at the Aventura Mall, and always stops to daydream at the Ferrari Store after acting all grown up as he stares at the men’s razors and accessories in The Art of Shaving. Browsing the cool stores in the mall is a great way to kill the time between eating at Jonny Rockets and seeing a movie at one of Aventura’s
24 theatres. Some mornings, we start at Starbucks or Flashback Diner, and then enjoy a walk with the dog as Jon rides his rip stick skateboard around the exercise path on the Turnberry Circle. That’s followed by some pool time at the condo, with swimming and horseplay, as well as a long soak in the Jacuzzi while we watch the boats on the ICW. After a little ping pong or foosball at the condominium’s rec center, we’re ready for dinner at Houston’s or American Pie or Burger Fi, followed by something sweet at the Cold Stone Creamery. The condominiums that we live in every day are luxury waterfront resorts, the kind of places that many people wish they could vacation in for just one week during their lifetime. Some resorts aim
to keep kids quiet and out of sight, but most Aventura condos want children to be seen and to be heard, and have their own playgrounds and youth activities. Our condominium has two swimming pools and organized games such as ring toss and underwater checkers take place often. Many children have taken private swimming lessons and with many condos having tennis courts and a chip and put, there are summer golf and tennis academies. Many Aventura condos feature a marina with fishing equipment, kayaks, or paddle boats available to rent; some offer a fishing area. The multitude of parks in Aventura provides safe playgrounds within walking distance. Aventura is a great place to raise a child. Aventura is a great place to be a kid.

When you arrive at your destination, store cash in the hotel safe and only take out what you think you will need for the day’s activities. When using your credit card on the road, never let it out of your sight. Be aware of “shoulder surfers” who may stand behind you in a ticket line and use a smartphone to snap a picture of your card. Carry just one card for use and store a backup in the hotel safe in case of emergencies. Leave unnecessary cards and identification - such as your Social Security card or wholesale club card - at home. Never use a public Wi-Fi connection such as the ones found in airports or hotels - to access your online financial accounts. Enterprising crooks have been known to use special devices to hack account information from unsuspecting travelers. Once you’re back home, take another look at your credit and keep a close eye on financial statements and credit accounts for a few months. Catching fraud early may help mitigate its financial impact.

CITY NEWS Innovations inspire high school girls to become next generation of female innovators, change the world through STEM (BPT) - When the high school class of 2014 graduates from college in five years, more than 8 million jobs will be available in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). For students today, STEM is their future. Innovations driven by STEM are shaping today’s economy. Though STEM accounts for a majority of job growth in the U.S., the number of students enrolling in relevant degree programs in college to fill these positions continues to decline, leaving a gap of skilled professionals. Women, in particular, are underrepresented in STEM. While women account for nearly half of all filled jobs nationwide, only a quarter of STEM-related positions are held by women. Even with the known gap, many women are pioneering the industry, showing young girls they too can be successful in STEM. They are leading the charge in bettering the world by developing innovations and technologies such as global, online crowd-sourcing platforms that allow supporters to give funds from mobile devices. Others are advancing alternative energy products that deliver electricity, water and other basic resources in developing countries. To help bridge the gap and ready the next generation of women innovators, many organizations support initiatives to introduce students, specifically young girls, to the impor-
tance of STEM. DeVry University, for instance, has its annual HerWorld program. “HerWorld was created 16 years ago to educate high school girls about STEM and careers in STEM,” says Donna Loraine, provost/vice president of Academic
inspirational stories from real, female role models working in STEM fields. This year, nearly 7,000 girls from high schools across the country will attend local events during National HerWorld Month in March. Emmy-Award nominated actress Mayim Bialik, renowned for her

HerWorld empowers young women to succeed alongside their male counterparts by participating in confidence-building activities and hands-on workshops. They also hear
roles on television series Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, is partnering with DeVry University to further the mission of HerWorld and inspire these girls by sharing her personal STEM journey - balancing her acting career while earning her Doctorate of Philosophy degree in neuroscience from UCLA. “When I was a teenager, my biology tutor on the set of Blossom inspired me to think about science in a way that showed me that science was made for girls, too,” says Bialik. “It gave me the confidence to pursue a degree in the sciences. I want to motivate and encourage girls to work hard to improve their math and science skills and their perceptions about those fields, regardless of their career goals.”

clearly both for distance and for reading. “It’s nice not to have to wear glasses anymore,” he says. “I enjoy being able to see again.” Jose was so pleased with his results that Alma decided to see if she might qualify for PresbyLasik. A month after her husband had the procedure, she, too, visited the Braverman Eye Center. She was doubtful about her candidacy, however, for a couple of reasons. Her prescription was stronger and more complex than Jose’s. “I wore trifocals,” she says. “I work a lot at the computer and I was having problems. I couldn’t see TV without glasses--everything was a blur -- and I couldn’t see signs when I was driving.” The other reason Alma wondered whether the procedure could be successful for her: “I’d been told I wasn’t a candidate for Lasik,” she says. “I didn’t think I’d ever be able to go without glasses.” But Jose kept urging her to try again. And at a visit to the Braverman Eye Center, Alma discovered that technology had changed since she last inquired about corrective vision surgery. During the consultation, she learned that she was indeed a candidate for PresbyLasik. Alma decided to go ahead. “My husband was so happy with his outcome that he convinced me to have the procedure,” she says. Just as it was for Jose, PresbyLasik was successful for Alma. Now, whether they are at work, out for a drive, watching a movie or walking their dogs, two German shepherds and an Australian sheepdog, they do it without the inconvenience of glasses or contacts. “I’m very happy not to have to wear glasses,” Alma says. “It took me awhile to figure out I didn’t need them anymore. I kept putting my finger on my nose to push them up. I feel very grateful. Both of us have recommended Dr. Braverman to friends.” Dr. Braverman started doing the PresbyLasik procedure around one year ago. It was introduced into the United States approximately six years ago, having originally been done using the Allegretto Wavelight femtosecond laser by an Italian Eye Surgeon, Dr. Roberto Pinelli. This is the same Laser that Dr. Braverman uses. Dr. Braverman said “this technique was developed by taking what Eye Surgeons already knew about how Lasik changes the shape of the front of the eye to eliminate glasses, and just modifying the techniques to be able to reduce or possibly eliminate the need for distance glasses, as well as reading glasses.” What To Expect With Z-lasik Surgery All Laser Lasik surgery is performed on a patient’s cornea, which provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Wavelight Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision. This means that they no longer need glasses or

Aventura’s population has boomed over the last 10 years to 36,000 with an increasing number of school age children driving the city’s vast number of restaurants, attractions and activities that are equally palatable to both adults and children. Aventura splurges on amenities for both parents and young children, and it’s a lot more than just offering kids’ menus in gourmet bistros. With wonderful options for an active lifestyle, indoors and out, for neighbors of all ages, Aventurans nurture friendships as a result of the ample opportunities for socialization provided by the many safe, citysponsored venues. Travel: Cruising 101 (BPT) - If you’re thinking of taking a cruise, there are a lot of options to consider, from the cruise line and style to the destinations, vacation length and types of on-board amenities. Cruising is a fun (and economical) way to see several places in a relatively short amount of time without having to unpack and repack every day. While some “hardcore” travelers may scoff at cruises, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Choose your cruise line This is probably the single most important task when planning a cruise. Choose the wrong cruise line, or even more specifically, the wrong ship, and it can mean the difference between a blissful, relaxing trip or one filled with 18-year-olds getting rowdy on rum punch. To figure out which ship and line suits your preference, do some research online and ask friends who have taken cruises. Find out the
median age onboard; if a ship caters to an older demographic, there’s typically not much to do after 10 p.m. Ask about the quality of food. The food on most vessels is in line with what you get at 4and 5-star restaurants on land, so beware that elastic waistbands might be needed by the end of your trip. Also gather opinions on cruise schedules. Some cruise lines allow for flexibility in your itinerary, others have two dinner seatings and if you’re not on time, you don’t eat. Ask about the activities are onboard. Is there a variety? Are the shows good? For comparison, Royal Caribbean brought “Hairspray” to sea several years ago, and a few ships have Cirque du Soleil spinoffs. There are also specialized cruise ships, like the American Queen Steamboat that runs multi-day cruises up and down the Mississippi River. Choose your destinations After finding the right cruise line, figure out how many days you want to spend on the cruise (remember that depending on where you live, it can take a day to travel to the departure port and a day to travel home). The number of days will then dictate what destination options you have. Some itineraries will feature just one port for visiting, while others will dock at anywhere from three to 10. With all your meals, snacks and beverages (alcohol and specialty restaurants onboard might cost more), your room, and onboard entertainment covered, there’s not much left to plan. You
can choose to research things to do in ports, or you can take advantage of the shore excursions that cruises offer. Pack for your cruise No matter your destinations, it pays to look up the typical weather and pack accordingly. A cruise in July might sound warm,

Preventing medication fraud and abuse starts at home (BPT) - Prescription drug abuse has reached epidemic proportions across the United States. More than 6 million Americans abuse prescription drugs and much of the abuse begins at home, according to a national survey on drug use and health. In fact, more than 70 percent of those who illegally use prescription pain relievers obtained them through friends or family, including surreptitiously raiding the home medicine cabinet. However, a recent study revealed that only 19 percent of parents are concerned about the misuse of narcotic pain medicines in their own families, showing that many do not recognize the severity of the problem. The most commonly abused prescription drugs are opioids or narcotic pain medications. When used along with other prescription medications like benzodiazepines and muscle relaxers, they deliver a cocaine-like high. Abuse accounts for 84 percent of patient-related prescription drug fraud, according to research by Express Scripts, the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit manager. “Narcotic pain killers can be essential in the treatment of a variety of serious
medical conditions; unfortunately they can also ruin lives when used improperly or abused,” says Jo-Ellen Abou Nader, senior director of Express Scripts’ Fraud, Waste and Abuse program. “Ending the national epidemic of prescription drug abuse demands constant vigilance and this includes proper storage and disposal of these medications.” Abou Nader offers some simple do’s and don’ts you can follow at home to reduce the risk of drug fraud and abuse: Do: • Keep drugs out of reach: Be sure to store your medications in a locked area out of children’s reach. Ask your pharmacist if they can provide medication bottles with child-resistant caps. • Keep track of your treatments: Keep a list of the medications in your home, especially those prone to abuse. Periodically count the medications remaining in the container and make sure that it’s the correct amount according to the prescribed dosage. • Dispose properly: If specific disposal instructions are provided on the label, follow them. Otherwise, remove the medi-
cation from their original containers or vials, mix them with an undesirable substance such as used coffee grounds, kitty litter or saw dust and place them in a sealable bag that can be disposed in the trash. Also, people should take advantage of the next DEA Drug Take-Back Day on April 27. Don’t: • Make it easy: Don’t store narcotics or potentially addictive drugs in a medicine cabinet. If that is the only option, add a lock to the cabinet and hide the key. • Save for next time: Once your condition has been treated and your prescription regimen complete, properly dispose of the drugs. Never keep extra medication for potential use in the future. • Share your medicine: The specific drug and dosage was selected specifically for the person it was prescribed for and could lead to dangerous drug interactions and serious side effects if used by someone else.

How to get a discount on expensive health care prescriptions (BPT) - After Carol Vanderploeg’s family experienced a double-job loss last spring; she worried about affording the $1,300 average monthly cost of her husband’s epilepsy prescriptions. The couple only had enough pills to last a few months when they moved to Augusta, Ga., in search of new jobs. Even after finding another job at Delta Air Lines, the potentially high refill cost kept Vanderploeg apprehensive. “The thought of what it was going to cost us was overwhelming,” she says. Vanderploeg is not alone. In this struggling economy, many Americans face the painful choice of filling a prescription or eating or paying for housing. Forty-eight million Americans did not fill a prescription due to cost in 2010, according to a report released by the non-profit Commonwealth Fund. Not taking medication as prescribed leads to negative health consequences for
individuals and higher costs for everyone, says Sharon Galzarano, a Washington, D.C.-based pharmacist of 20 years. “Patients can end up hospitalized, or their medical condition can worsen because they did not take their medication as their health care provider directed,” Galzarano says. “This is especially important for people with chronic medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.” The most cost- effective way to manage your health is to develop a routine of consistently adhering to your medication regimen, Galzarano says. Spending a dollar on high-blood pressure medication saves the community $10 by eliminating the need for additional hospitalizations, tests, operations and other interventions, according to CVS Caremark.
