A Family Experience At The Braverman Eye Center By Sheldon Campbell - Aventura Digest
Introduction Many people that I know who need to wear prescription lenses, do so only out of necessity. The fashionable aspect of it is secondary, only because you need to wear them. I was diagnosed with myopia at the age of nine years. Wearing glasses has not been an issue until lately because of constraints within my professional career. I am a petroleum engineer from Trinidad and Tobago, and am required to wear safety glasses as part of daily field operations. Being a contemporary styled young man, I resented the use of those unsightly prescription safety glasses with side-shields, and the use of my regular prescription
glasses with pullover safety glasses was not a comfortable fit; nor was it convenient to wear my contact lenses daily in the field due to all the dust and debris that could get into my eyes and under my contact lenses. For me, the only solution was to have refractive surgery. Referrals – Why Braverman I have been researching the technology of refractive surgery and a reputable centre and surgeon for sometime before making a decision. I was first referred to the Braverman Eye Center in Trinidad through my sister Michelle Campbell, by Barry Davis and then by Alicia Codrington. With Lasik being performed by hundreds of surgeons, I wanted someone who was not only experienced but up
to date with state of the art equipment. Based on the reviews received of the Braverman Eye Center’s staff, equipment and surgeon, I decided to research for myself. “A Library That Will Knock Your Socks Off ” By John Bernardo - Aventura Digest
Aventura residents will once again have access to a new library. The building’s ground breaking ceremony was held on Feb. 29 as dignitaries observed the site of the future facility. The new northeast library branch, which will be operated and maintained by Miami-Dade County, is located at 2930 Aventura Boulevard. The expected opening date for the new building is the fall of 2013. The library’s general contractor, Skyline Construction, Inc., will erect the new building on the same site of the old library. In October 2005, the old library branch’s roof was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma and the County was forced to shut it down. After the old library was demolished, a 37-foot bookmobile bus was parked outside the branch until the fall of 2006 when it relocated to Aventura City Hall on 19200 West Country Club Drive. Once completed, the new Aventura Boulevard branch will be become a 26,482 square-foot complex that will consist of an exterior covered deck, vestibule, two courtyards, a 100-seat auditorium, two conference rooms and a coffee shop. Moreover, when people start to walk around the branch they will see and experience both a reading facility and a nature center as the library will become part of a green and nature-oriented facility. The library will also be seeking a LEED gold certification due to its green features and energy saving components that includes the use of green building materials and photovoltaic panels. Part of the building’s exterior will have a rain screen façade that will help solve waterproofing and energy issues as well as
provide a surface for patrons so they can get and read information about the green movement and the social and cultural role of the library. Victoria Galan, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS), said the future library will also offer Aventura residents some new programs that will focus on green/ environmental issues as well as traditional story times for 0 to 5 year-olds, a teen club for young adults, and book discussion groups. The new branch will also give library cardholders access to about 50 PCs and 30 laptop computers. In addition to new programs and computers, the library’s design will be environmentally friendly and offer the public an educational way to see and experience its natural landscape. The building’s pathways and plaza are located around a retention pond that will contain wildlife and native plants. Signs will also be posted to describe the wildlife, plants and enhanced drainage systems. “Everything in the new library will be modern, open and airy and it will fulfill our mission of becoming the compelling community destination; the building’s green features will be so impressive that that these features are going to knock the socks off of people,” Galan said. “The library will be the first green library that will incorporate green/environmental programming.” The Northeast Branch Library was constructed as a result of the 1972 Decade of Progress bond initiative. Total budgeted costs incurred to open and operate the new library will be about $18 million (includes furniture, fixtures & equipment). The costs are totally funded by Miami-Dade County revenue generated by property taxes.

City News Top online searches show political and social attitude of 2011 (ARA) - Notorious trials, political scandals and social uprisings drew people online, but the death of Osama bin Laden and the dominance of the iPhone - fueled by the passing of Apple founder Steve Jobs topped online searches and news in 2011. For 10 years, Yahoo! has analyzed its aggregate search data to gauge the top stories, compelling newsmakers, and viral fads. The Internet giant, visited every month by some 700 million people worldwide, debuted on Dec. 1 its “Top 10 News” topics, based on searches and top stories. Top 10s include the Arab uprising, political sex scandals led by former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, heroic acts, a chronological review of extreme weather, notable endings that range from the space shuttle program to Oprah Winfrey’s daytime program, and a review of “obsessions” like planking, Charlie Sheen and the Tiger Mom meme. This year, a technological marvel came in at No. 1 - and even that had played a role in protests.
“This year the iPhone became available through other providers,” says Vera Chan, senior editor and a Web trend analyst at Yahoo!, of the Apple product. “It now comes with a talking personal assistant. It comes in white, which for some people was like the elusive unicorn. And don’t forget, even though pundits were disappointed it wasn’t a major upgrade, the iPhone 4s helped Apple become, for a brief moment, the most valuable company in the world. “As if that weren’t enough, the phone facilitated political movements around the world. committed the most classic sin,” Chan says. Other scandals had a more updated spin, such as “sexting” pictures that former New York congressman Anthony Weiner accidentally tweeted to his followers. Other top themes of the year: • Heroic acts. Some heroes were sought out by names. Others are nameless, working under calamitous circumstances. Sheldon Campbell - Petroleum Engineer BSc MSC Trinidad and Tobago What To Expect With Z-LASIK Surgery All Laser LASIK surgery is performed on a patient’s cornea, which provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 vision. This means that they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play most sports, and watch TV. Also, you can participate in careers requiring good unaided vision, such as needed in police

professional and courteous, readily responded to emails in a timely manner, and addressed all of my concerns, while being flexible and sensitive of my schedule as an international resident. Screening (Pre-procedure care) I later scheduled an appointment, a free screening, to determine my suitability as a candidate for Lasik Refractive Surgery. I was happy when informed by Dr. Braverman, whom I met that day, that I was ideal. The screening process was very thorough, examining and reexamining quite a range of data parameters for each eye. I was also impressed by having met with Dr. Braverman at the end of the free screening process and prior to the surgical procedure. He spent time answering my questions. I was verbally walked through the procedure, such that there would be no surprises on the day of the surgery. Refractive Procedure Experiences On the day of the refractive surgery, I was surprised to learn how short the surgical procedure would be. I thought it would take over an hour. Most of the time was spent in preparation, sterilizing around my eyes, applying anesthetic drops, and then calibrating the laser with my prescription data. The entire time in the surgery room for both eyes was only 20 minutes and without complications or major discomfort, which was aided by Dr. Braverman talking and verbally walking me through the process such that no surprises would be experienced. The instrument was inserted to keep my eye lids open throughout the LASIK refractive procedure. Another instrument, the first of two lasers used, was then placed over the eye, and suction was formed, the equivalent of compressing swimming goggles around your eyes. The best thing I could do was to simply focus on the green fixation dot and relax while the corneal flap was being created with a laser cut. I was told that during this eleven second laser procedure that over three million tiny spots were laid down with the laser to gently create the flap necessary to do the rest of the LASIK procedure. The second laser was then used and it took about 20 seconds to reshape the cornea. The eye was then inspected, flap replaced, and the entire procedure was repeated for the other eye. Post procedural care My biggest post-procedural discomfort was the inability to use my cell phone for texting and emailing, and not watching television with my new 20/15 vision immediately after the surgery, since I had to keep my eyes closed for two hours to allow the flaps to settle in. The

(ARA) - Tax time has a reputation for being almost universally stressful. As the looming April deadline closes in, Americans are concerned with getting their taxes done correctly and on time. (ARA) - Even though financial education courses for children are proven to contribute to improved savings rates and other financial measures, only 12 states require a personal finance course for high school graduation, according to the Council for Economic Education’s 2011 Survey of the States. In classrooms, studies show teachers want to provide personal finance instruction, but only 20 percent believe they have the capability to teach the subject, according to a study by the National Endowment for Financial Education. The benefits to students are real: Treasury Department research shows that high school graduates in states that mandate financial education have higher savings rates and a greater net worth than graduates from states without financial education. As a result of the growing awareness about the importance of financial education, more resources are becoming available to teachers and parents. To help with funding for schools, a program called Pathway to Financial Success (www.PathwaytoFinancialSuccess.org), from Discover Financial Services, recently announced thousands of dollars in grants to public high schools to implement financial education curriculum and test students to make sure they are learning the content. Schools can apply for the grants via the website, and Discover will fund the grants up to a total of $2 million annually. Additionally, nonprofits like The Council for Economic Education are training teachers around the country, helping them teach children from kindergarten through high school about personal finance topics, such as saving and investing. At home, parents can help reinforce what children learn about money. Unfortunately, these conversations are often not happening, as experts say parents are often more comfortable talking about sex, drugs and alcohol than they are about money - usually because parents do not trust their own financial acumen. Indeed, it can be an awkward conversation, as the issue of money raises other concerns and priorities. But a number of resources are available to help
parents talk to their children about money, such as the Jump$tart Coalition (www.jumpstart.org). Pathway to Financial Success also offers an online resource center for parents, providing tips on how to talk to their kids about how to manage money effectively. Additionally, through the site parents can identify their school district contacts and find resources to reach out to their school administrators and teachers about bringing financial education into their children’s classrooms. For teachers, PathwaytoFinancial Success.org also provides sample lesson plans and other resources they can use in their classrooms. Parents can start helping ensure their children are financially savvy by talking to their kids about money using a few simple steps at home: • Use everyday experiences to talk about money. City News Explore the Civil War’s 150th anniversary with a unique vacation (ARA) - As filmmaker Ken Burns noted in his award-winning documentary, The Civil War, the conflict “was fought in 10,000 places, from Valverde, N. M., and Tullahoma, Tenn., to St. Albans, Vt., and Fernandina on the Florida coast.” But for
all the war’s far-flung geography, according to Burns, the physical, emotional and political hub of the war was Washington, D.C. It’s no surprise, then, that Burns has chosen Washington, D.C. as the location for a very special travel experience coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Working with the award-winning travel company Tauck, Burns has designed an all-inclusive, five-day “Ken Burns Civil War” event that explores a wide range of Civil War-related sites within and nearby the city. Much to the delight of a packed audience, Don Casino does it again with another outstanding Ship Showcase. How Don does it, year after year, with each show better than the year before, only illustrates his talent to choose the very best performers from all over the world, who will be entertaining passengers on the largest cruise ships. This year, as usual, the show was conducted by one of the greatest Master of Ceremonies and comedians, Bruce Smirnoff, who is always the perfect man for the job. He is a natural born comic who delivers his hilarious humor so naturally, the audience has a good belly laugh every minute he’s on stage at the Littman Theatre in North Miami Beach. The entire show, three and a half hours
long, is the best that can be seen anywhere. It would be impossible to elaborate on each and every act in so short a space, but to name a few, there was “The Unexpected Surfer Boys Band,” with their tribute to the Beach Boys and all their timeless classic hits and choreography. The Hawley Magic Grand Illusion show, a high energy act, leaving the audience in great suspense. Craig Meyer, Almost Elton John, one would swear, was Elton John, in person. His looks, costume, and sound was an exact Elton double. All 12 acts were equally super Last but not least, was a surprise performance by the well known artists “Peaches & Herb, whose career has spanned over four decades singing all their top hits.
