They began by draining the area and creating an intricate canal system, which laid the foundation for the development of a prosperous community.

The National Weather Service has officially announced the start of the 2023 Hurricane Season – which spans from June 1st, 2023 to November 30th, 2023 –which has already casted a shadow on our summer plans. Unlike previous years where South Floridians approached the season with a more casual disposition, Aventura residents are now proactive in preparing themselves for what’s to come while viewing weather forecasts with a more critical – and sometimes ominous –outlook.

Cloudy days have been amiss since the beginning of 2023 and unpredictable storms have been the norm in South Florida for months. On April 12th, Broward County residents experienced an historic downpour of nearly 26 inches, resulting in record breaking flash floods that inundated thousands of homes and businesses while stranding drivers in the middle of major highways in their vehicles, most of which required urgent rescues.To the surprise of many, the impetus of the storm reduced the Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport to a never-ending lake of flood water, closing the facility and grounding all aircraft for days while the government declared a State of Emergency.

While many long-term South Floridians already know how to prepare themselves and their properties during the season, new condo residents from the Northeast - who are more accustomed to maneuvering snow opposed to rain – are acclimating themselves to potential Hurricane threats and commonly overlook necessary steps in the process. Experts recommend assembling enough supplies to last for 14 days. Aventura is primarily dominated by condominiums, so many residents enjoy the benefits of living on an elevated plane above ground level. However, preparing for a potential Hurricane should remain first and foremost on our radar as summer approaches. Beat the last-minute rush by stocking up on all your basic essentials and non-perishable items as early as possible. Along with food and water, flashlights and First-Aid Kits, don’t

forget to store an adequate amount of cash along with significant documents such as insurance policies, passports, and driver licenses in a waterproof box or container.

Make arrangements to clear your balconies and porches. Though many homeowners reside within the neighborhood, others living outside the city purchase units in Aventura as investment properties. In the case of the vacant, yet furnished properties, several steps in the preparation process are overlooked, such as bringing all the outdoor and balcony furniture indoors to prevent them from being tossed around by the wind, causing even more damage to neighboring properties or pedestrians.

Park your car in a safe place.

Parking lots in Aventura vary based on their different propensities to Flood. Plant-Based Asian Dim Sum Concept Expands With Second Location In Midtown Miami

Minty Z, the Plant-Based Restaurant Concept showcasing Asian Fusion Cuisine, has been a Coconut Grove mainstay since opening in 2021. Now, Chef/Owner Alex Falco along with hisWife Huimin Zhu (AKA Minty Z and the restaurant’s muse) and Partner Ignacio LopezMancisdor have opened a second location of the popular Dim Sum Destination in the heart of Midtown Miami at 3451 Northeast First Avenue, Miami, Florida 33137. With an indoor/outdoor seating capacity of 50, the full-service restaurant is now open daily for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, delivering craveable, vibrant cuisine that is wholly Plant-Based but first and foremost, fresh and delicious.

According to Falco, “We consider Minty Z to be an Asian Dim Sum Restaurant that also happens to be Vegan. I think that if they still exist, we are doing a great job of disproving any stereotypes about Plant-Based cooking. Minty Z is a labor of love for Chef/Co-Owner Alex Falco. After more than a decade working in acclaimed restaurants in both the United Kingdom and New York, Falco’s palate began to evolve and he became Vegan in 2018. Minty, also a hospitality professional, embraced a fully Plant-Based Diet as well in 2019 and the two decided to move to Miami to open a business that reflected their twin culinary passions and inspirations: Plant-Based cooking and Asian Cuisine. After a brief foray with a Vegan Food Truck, they began selling their creations at farmers markets, particularly the legendary Coconut Grove Organic Farmers Market where they gained a devoted following for their made-from-scratch Kim Chi, Bao Buns and dumplings.The Pandemic arrived and although it limited their public-facing opportunities at first, it afforded them time for research and development to really perfect their recipes, creating dishes that took Plant-Based Asian Cuisine to the next level. Encouraged by the success of the restaurant and with the support of Lopez-Mancisdor, who had become a Minty Z superfan and ultimately became friends with the couple, the team decided to expand. They found an opportunity in Midtown Miami with the hopes that Minty Z would prove just as popular with the young professionals and families that lived there, as well as the shoppers and diners drawn to the area.

“I love to bring Non-Vegan or Non-Vegetarian friends to Minty Z just to watch their reactions when they realize how delicious the food is,” concurs Lopez-Mancisdor. “Once I discovered the restaurant in Coconut Grove I knew that I wanted to be part of any future plans for the concept. Midtown is such a wonderful spot for our new location. It has a great mix of residents and visitors and is already established as a restaurant Mecca. We’re thrilled to be open and to see folks embrace what Minty Z has to offer.”

The cheerful restaurant has a whimsical vibe, awash with a central mural, bright colors and cheerful Asianaccented decor. Wine, Beer, Sake and Sake Cocktails are served. • 2 Large Eggs

• 1 Cups of Buttermilk

Directions:

1. For the Cake: Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray a rimmed baking sheet about 13 by 18 inches with cooking spray.Whisk together the Cake Flour, the Baking Soda, and the Salt in a medium bowl. Whisk together the Food Coloring, the Cocoa Powder, the Vinegar, and the Vanilla in a small bowl.

2. Combine the Granulated Sugar, the Vegetable Oil, and the Eggs in a large bowl. Beat with a mixer on medium speed until it is smooth for 1 minute. Reduce the speed to low; beat in the Flour Mixture, alternating with the Buttermilk, beginning and ending with the Flour. Add the Food Coloring Mixture; beat on high speed until it is smooth for 20 to 30 seconds.

The Importance of Mental Wellness for a Healthy Heart and Brain

Research shows anxiety, Stress and Depression can have a negative impact on physical health and may even increase the risk for Heart Disease and Stroke.

In fact, the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health, identified a strong interconnection between the mind, heart and body in its scientific statement, “Psychological Health, Well-Being and the Mind-HeartBody Connection.”

“Research has clearly demonstrated negative psychological factors, personality traits and mental health disorders can negatively impact cardiovascular health,” said Volunteer Chair of the statement writing committee Glenn N. Levine, M.D., FAHA, Master Clinician and Profes-

sor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of the Cardiology Section at the Michael E. DeBakeyVA Medical Center. “The body’s biological reaction to Stress, anxiety and other types of poor mental health can manifest physically through an Irregular Heart Rate or rhythm, increased Blood Pressure and inflammation throughout the body. Negative psychological health is also associated with health behaviors that are linked to an increased risk for Heart Disease and Stroke, such as smoking, lower levels of physical activity, unhealthy diet, being overweight and not taking medications as prescribed.”

Studies have found some people, including people of color, may face a greater risk of poor health outcomes due

to chronic Stress, Depression and anxiety linked to psychosocial stressors, particularly those related to social and economic inequality, discrimination, systemic racism and other societal factors. A study published in the “Journal of the American Heart Association” found U.S. adults who reported feeling highly discriminated against at work had an increased risk of developing High Blood Pressure compared to those who reported low discrimination at work.

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing,” Levine said. “It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Practicing mindfulness in all forms allows one to be more aware of

Understanding the connection between Thyroid concerns and Mental Fortitude is the first step to combatting the added Stress of having these Health Issues. First, where is this Thyroid Gland? It is a small Butterfly-Shaped Gland that is right on the front of the Throat midway between the chin and upper chest. Be gentle when feeling it with the thumb and pointer finger. This Gland releases Hormones that are in charge of Metabolism primarily. These Thyroid Hormones can also affect Heart Rate, Body Temperature, Fatigue Levels and Mood. It is no wonder then that these Hormones being out of balance can affect one’s Mental Health. Emerging concerns of Depression, Anxiety, and altered levels of productivity could be signaling a Thyroid concern. Before taking Thyroid Supplements though, monitor Thyroid Function with a Health Professional to ensure that external substances don’t tilt the Thyroid Gland off balance. On the other hand, when underactive and not producing enough Hormones, the Thyroid Gland is sometimes consid ered to be “failing” and in a HypoThyroid state. Rather than think of it as “failing,” I like to believe that the Thyroid Gland has some room for improvement! As such, supplementation and a little help with Synthetic Thyroid Medications can go a long way to supporting an underactive Thyroid. HypoThyroidism—or the condition of having an underactive Thyroid— presents with distinct features. So, what can be done to enhance the quality of life for people who have Thyroid and Mental Health problems? Take a look at some of these suggestions:

• Engage in self-care: Taking care of your Physical and Mental Health is essential when managing Thyroid issues. Practice relaxation-based exercises like Yoga or Meditation for Stress Management.To enhance General Health, consume a balanced diet and engage in frequent exercise.

• Attend a support group: Meeting people who are going through the same things as you can give you a sense of camaraderie and support.Thyroid sufferers and anyone struggling with Mental Health difficulties can find a wide variety of online support groups. One Thyroid support group on Facebook is called, “Thyroid Support Group.”

• Seek Medical Attention: It’s crucial to get help if you think you might have a Thyroid Issue or are having Mental Health issues.Your doctor can do tests to see if you have a Thyroid problem and can suggest appropriate treatments. Careful monitoring of Thyroid Function is essential because there are Complex Autoimmune Conditions that can start as HyperThyroidism and then progress to HypoThyroidism. Catching this early may help with long-term management of these diseases.

• Take Medication as directed: It’s critical to follow directions when taking any Medication, whether for Thyroid or Mental Health.Without contacting your

Seemingly, and without explanation, the Thyroid can change its course and so monitoring Thyroid Function is essential. Moreso, just understanding the nature of Thyroid problems can take the pressure off. Suggestions for improving your Mental Strength to overcome Thyroid changes include practicing selfcare, venting to others in a safe setting (like a support group), taking Medications or Supplements as recommended by a Healthcare Professional, and adhering to follow-up appointments with Health Providers, including a Therapist if that sounds comfortable.
