COOLIDGE PALMS Assisted Living Resort Coolidge Palms, a member of the Timeless Life Care managed locations, is working hard to keep Florida seniors out of nursing homes. Coolidge Palms is a charming community designed to help those who need assistance with activities of daily living. Just like family, we provide the help they need to maintain a rich, full life while remaining as independent as possible. Our single goal is to provide a resort-like environment, filled with beauty, security and loving care. We treat each of our residents as individuals who are entitled to

respect, time and attention. We offer an exclusive and secured environment tailored to each individual, with amenities such as a botanical garden with exterior seating, spa-like restrooms, grand piano lobby, library fully equipped with a resident computer and billiard pool room. Coolidge Palms has exceeded expectations in fulfilling an ever growing need to keep seniors out of nursing homes by providing high levels of assistance with activities of daily life in a beautiful home-like environment. While most assisted living

facilities have a policy requiring residents to be independent in their activities of daily living, Coolidge Palms accepts residents who are low functioning and requiring maximum assistance with activities of daily living. Activities of daily living include: bathing, dressing, grooming, ambulation, continence, eating, as well as dementia. Coolidge Palms is equipped with the most state-of-the-art equipment and systems. The kitchen is designed, built and equipped to include the latest industrial grade convection ovens, steam tables, heating lamps, ice making machines and more. The facility has a 24-hour

emergency response system with nurse call devices located at each bed and in each bathroom. The building has an integrated fire protection system to include fire sprinklers and early warning features, monitored 24 hours each day by a central monitoring station. The individual rooms are completely furnished, including television and telephone. The bathrooms are all substantially in compliance with ADA and feature the latest in design for “roll-in” showers. At Coolidge Palms, it doesn’t take long for you to feel like you are at a resort. Our residents are surrounded by those who truly care. Living here becomes so

much more than simply getting help with a few daily activities. It’s about receiving that person-

money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed.

How Do Leaks Happen? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be

Water Leaks: Damage Happens Quickly It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest, state-of-the-art technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition. Working Directly with Your Insurance Company To save the home and business owner time and

DANIA BEACH - A visit to Brighten Dental Care can be downright relaxing. And the reward is a beautiful smile. Brighten Dental Care is a multispecialty office, including Endodontist Root Canal Specialist, Periodontist (gum surgery specialist) and Orthodontist, where a patient can take care of all his or her dental needs. “Our goal is to provide each patient with the very best possible treatment in a way that fits his or her individual needs, expectations, and budget,” Dr. Gupta says. “We will inform a patient of what we think is the best course of treatment.” Dr. Gupta and his friendly staff Kiran

PATIENTS PRAISE DR. GUPTA AND STAFF Dr. Gupta’s patients come from as far away as Port St. Lucie, Key West, and even New York. “Normally I am very scared of the dentist. Hence, I had not been to one in 10 years. But Dr. Gupta was very calming. He assured me that I would not be in pain, and he was right.” – Robyn Almodonai

(Office Manager) Brittney (Patient Coordinator, Elsa (Dental Hygienist), and Marilyn (Senior Dental Assistant) go out of their way to make patients feel at home and their visits enjoyable. Snap-On Smile WHY Snap-On Smile? No shots. No drilling. No adhesives. You can even eat while wearing the Snap-On Smile® appliance. Patients looking for a noninvasive, reversible, affordable approach to restorative and cosmetic dentistry are excellent candidates for Snap-On Smile. It’s an easy, quick and affordable solution for patients who want to feel better, look better, and function better. Patients using Snap-On Smile report an immediate boost to confidence and self esteem. Most are impressed with the natural look and feel of Snap-On Smile and are grateful for the brief time investment - about two weeks - to achieve such life changing results. This revolutionary appliance is the ideal solution for solving a wide variety of short- and long-term clinical challenges, as it serves as both a non-invasive restorative option as well as a diagnostic appliance. Applications include using Snap-On Smile as aesthetic provisionals for implant restorations, as cosmetic removable partial dentures, and even as a long-term smile Laser Dentistry Many people, both adults and children, dread going to the dentist because they fear the Novocain and drilling that have long been the standard treatment for cavities and other tooth repairs. Now, laser dentistry can eliminate the need for both of them. “The laser can cut teeth and gums, fix cavities, do gum and bone surgery,” Dr. Gupta says. Because there is no drilling necessary, the annoying and sometimes frightening sound of the drill is also eliminated. “The dental laser uses water to cut, not the heat of the laser,” Dr. Gupta explains. “It

checks bleeding immediately, making it easy for the doctor to see exactly what he is doing, and it instantly kills any germs it touches, which helps to prevent the possibility of infection. The motto for the laser is, “no shot, no pain, no drilling, no kidding!’ and it’s certainly true.” Electronic Injection, Nitrous Oxide, & Oral Sedation For the times when an injection for anesthesia is necessary, the Midwest Electronic Injection machine makes the process easier and virtually pain-free. The device electronically measures the amount of pressure in tissues so when the liquid anesthesia enters, it is precisely the right amount.” Anxious patients can benefit from nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and a single oral dose of sedation medication before any injection. “Many fearful patients prefer this type of anesthesia,” Dr. Gupta says. Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain Syndrome Another piece of equipment treats TMJ pain syndrome. The removable retainer type device creates space and flexibility in the jaw, allowing more blood to flow and causing pain to lessen. “TMJ can be a debilitating disorder,” Dr. Gupta says. “With this device, we can help the patient get back to normal.” Professional Whitening Professional whitening can be achieved in two ways: bleaching at home, or with an in-office procedure. With at-home bleaching, the dental professional creates a custom-fitted tray molded to the patient’s teeth. A spacer material coating the tray allows exactly the right amount of bleach into the tray, a process that eliminates overflow or waste. The patient uses the trays at home according to instructions given by the dentist. When bleaching is performed in the office, the dental professional can

carefully control the bleaching material. Some of the brand name bleaching systems being used at Brighten Dental Care are Zoom, Sapphire, and the most powerful, Deep Bleaching System K O R whitening. Gone are the days when straightening crooked teeth required unsightly metal bands, brackets, and wires. Instead, Dr. Gupta is certified in the use of Invisalign, braces that are virtually invisible. Implementing the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, the lab creates a series of precisely customized invisible aligners. Now you can have a beautiful smile with invisible braces within six months to a year, without a metal mouth. The invisible braces are a set of aligners which you change every two weeks. Apart from teens, adults are perfect candidates for invisible braces. No messy and awkward metal brackets and wires, less frequent visits, usually 6 to 8 weeks and Brush and floss as usual. Dental Implants Implants are a wonderful alternative to dentures or bridges. They can also be an adjunct to make dentures more comfortable. Once they are put in, they are as strong as real teeth, and can look just as attractive. “You can replace just a single tooth, or all missing teeth with dental implants,” Dr. Gupta says. Veneer Smile Make-Over If teeth have permanent stains or are uneven, broken, misshapen, or have noticeable gaps, laminates or veneers may be the best way to create a beautiful smile. Dr. Gupta uses an amazing product called Lumineer by Denmat.. These thin porcelain laminates bond to the front of the teeth to create a nearly perfect surface. The procedure is permanent and carries a three- to five-year warranty, although many veneers have been shown to last 15 years or longer. A Perfect Smile For Every Budget With interest free or low interest payment plans from Care-Credit and Chase Health Advance, you can have the quality dentistry now and pay it later in small monthly payments (subject to credit approval). So no more excuses, you can have the extraordinary smile you always wanted without any fear of pain or Pesos.

How much does that doggie in the window really cost? (ARA) - If you’ve ever taken in a kitten found on the street or adopted a puppy from an unplanned litter a friends’ dog had, you know there is no such thing as a “free” pet. No matter how you acquire your new best friend, pet ownership comes with significant start-up costs and ongoing maintenance expenses. With regular and emergency health care, food and the occasional impulsive indulgence of a chew toy here or a scratching post there, you learn quickly that being a good pet parent requires more than love, treats and toys - it also requires financial planning. Often, people and pets come together unexpectedly. Maybe you brought home a kitten that was hanging out in your office’s parking lot, or took in an older dog for a friend who was moving and couldn’t take the pooch with them. Sometimes, however, you do have the opportunity to plan ahead for pet ownership. When that opportunity occurs, keep these considerations in mind: • What does your budget allow? Take a

critical look at your finances. Do you have at least $100 a month extra to cover regular pet costs like food and grooming? You need to incorporate pet expenses both regular and emergency ones - into your monthly budget, just as you include utilities, mortgage or rent, and groceries for the rest of your family. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides a great breakdown of pet care costs on its website, www.aspca.org. • How will you fund your pet purchase? While adopting a pet from a shelter can be relatively low cost, purebreds purchased from a breeder can cost hundreds-and in some cases even thousands-of dollars. Paying for your pet purchase with a credit card can provide you with certain consumer protections. But if you won’t be able to pay off the entire purchase cost right away, and will have to carry the expense on your balance, you may want to reconsider the type of pet you wish to buy. After all, what best friend would want you to go into debt -

and possibly impact your credit score - in order to spend time with him? • What kind of pet will fit into your lifestyle? If you adopt a dog but work long hours, neither of you will be happy with the time apart. If you live in a small apartment, you might find a pet bird or some exotic fish will fit your home life better than a St. Bernard. • When a pet needs emergency medical care, loving pet owners may be tempted to reach for their credit cards. But just as you are cautious about credit use for your own needs, you should be careful how you use credit for pet care. Before you adopt, build up a pet care emergency fund that can help ensure you don’t have to go into debt to give Fluffy or Fido the care they need. Research pet insurance to see if it

makes sense for your financial situation. When an emergency arises and you don’t have the cash to cover it, research other options before you reach for the plastic. The Humane Society provides a state-bystate list of pet financial-aid organizations on its website at www.humanesociety.org. Having a pet can be a wonderful experience. Families bond around pets, children learn responsibility, individuals find companionship, and pets can even help improve your health by lowering your blood pressure and improving your mood. With some advanced planning, you can help ensure pet-related money problems don’t detract from all the positives of owning a pet.

alized care within a very special neighborhood filled with very special people. As people experience Coolidge Palms for the first time, we often hear how comfortable they immediately feel. Of course, one of the main reasons for that feeling is our residents themself. They are quick to reach out to new neighbors and friends. Another reason for this unsurpassed level of comfort is our outstanding staff. At Coolidge Palms, you will be served by an exceptionally dedicated and caring professional staff who genuinely loves what they do, and it shows! The services rendered well surpass the requirements set by law. Timeless Life Care Owner, Greg Anderson commented, “this is a 24 hour 7 day per week schedule, staffed with certified nurse assistants (CNA). Our resident care coordinators have a minimum of a bachelor degree, which will assist with keeping medications in order, follow through with doctors and other health care professionals, including blood work and x-rays. We help to complete any medical testing and get the results back to the doctor and coordinate the follow-up visit.” Variety is the spice of life, and variety is what we offer. Our activities and social program is designed to blend the different interests of all our residents and develop

camaraderie between our residents, families and staff. Caring for the special needs of dementia call for an extraordinary balance of professionalism and sensitivity. With this in mind, Coolidge Palms’ memory care provides residents a home-like atmosphere of warmth, acceptance and understanding. We provide care for residents with dementia, and other related diseases, such as Parkinson’s, post-stroke and others. A full schedule of events includes crafts, games, shopping trips, barber and beauty shop visits, and other regular activities, on campus and off. We pamper our residents with therapy sessions, with the use of hot cloths, hand and facial massages. Don’t forget to ask about our “Spa Day” with a licensed massage therapist and our “Walking Club”. There is weekly entertainment, picnics in the park, Saturday barbecues at Coolidge Palms with family and outside friends invited, and regularly scheduled services with neighborhood religious leaders. Being in our eleventh year of operations, Timeless Life Care locations are always nearly at capacity. This success has been due to the basic principle of servicing and pampering our residents. Our staff-to-resident ratio exceeds any other facility of its type. Shared room rates starts at $1,495.00 per month, and includes all amenities. Private suites start at $1,995.00 per month. “Having funds is always a

causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. Is Mold Making Your Home Toxic? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. What Is Mold? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. A Job for Professionals Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. Goodbye, Mold Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such

as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1st PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. Pumped-up ponytail: An effortless ponytail is the perfect style to pair with this season’s hottest colors and prints. This sleek style usually reserved for the gym was all over the runways with a new, modern twist. The trick to giving the classic ponytail new life is adding volume on top. Pull the hair into a high ponytail but leave out the front section. Tease the front pieces by gently backcombing at the root. Then gather together and pin into place so the ends lay over the ponytail. To add shine and prevent frizz, apply a serum like Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smooth & Shine Serum in the palm of your hand, emulsify and run your fingers through the pony. Bohemian braids: The boho trend is all about being relaxed and natural. A loose side braid complements this look and, if you’re up for it, try this season’s hottest new trend: a mermaid tail braid. Divide hair into two sections and braid each. Then line the two braids up side-by-side and use small bobby pins to hold them together. The key to making this look effortless is to keep it casual, don’t over-style the braid. Spray the braid with Suave Professionals Dry Conditioner to lightly condition and renew shine.

Bombshell blowout: To counterbalance the sharp tailoring of the menswear trend, wear your hair in a sexy, feminine style. You can never go wrong with a fullbodied blowout that has volume at the roots, bounce at the ends and is utterly sexy. To get a bouncy smooth style without going to the salon, use a large round brush when blow-drying. The front pieces are the most important so be sure to blow-dry them first. Then work with twoinch sections to completely dry the rest of the hair. To really turn up the volume, wrap warm hair around large rollers and let it set. Once hair has cooled down, remove the rollers for a va-va-voom look. Chic chignons: The great thing about a chignon is that it can work with a casual look or an evening style. For a daytime look, create a low chignon keeping it a little messy and undone with loose pieces to frame your face. For nighttime, take your look up a notch by creating a sleek top knot. The beauty of this hairstyle is that it can be made more or less dressy depending on how tight you pull the knot, sleeker for a more formal look and looser for an understated feel.

City News Aventura Resident Dr. Nikos Michalis Spanakos looks back at his ties to Cassius Clay and the 1960 Olympic Boxing Team By Shelby Nathanson - Aventura Digest

With the Olympics quickly approaching in July, we take a look at one of our own athletes , former USA Olympian boxer Nikos Michalis Spanakos. The youngest of seven sons, he and his twin brother Petros grew up in the rough section of Red Hook in Brooklyn, New York. Born into the aftermath of the Depression era, Nikos (Nick) and Petros (Pete), often referred to as the “Terror Twins,” did not simply take up boxing as a hobby or sport. Red Hook’s situation as a poor neighborhood forced the Spanakos brothers to pursue boxing as means of survival, a self-defense mechanism against antagonistic bullies and a way out of poverty. Children of Greek immigrants, the twins’ genetic Spartan heritage and mentality complemented their pugilistic endeavors and made them successful in their craft. Not only interested in boxing, Nikos and Petros also defied the misconception of the stereotypical boxers as aggressive meatheads. Eloquently stated in his article recalling his experiences on the 1960 Olympic team, Nikos states that: “Society believes in the untrue stereotypical concept of the uneducated, stuttering, punch-drunk fighter. While boxers are not born in middleclass neighborhoods but rather incubated in the slums and ghettos, there is a new generation of boxers coming on line that will forever abolish the punch-drunk boxer so satirized by comedians.” Uneducated by American schools themselves, Mr. Spanakos’s parents made life-long sacrifices to make sure their children were educated and had opportunities they did not have. Instead of dropping out of high school like many other boxers did, the “Terror Twins” graduated and went on to attend college and continue their education. Nikos received an athletic scholarship to the liberal arts College of Idaho in Caldwell and graduated in 1960; Petros completed his degree in law in 1959. Both of their boxing prowess led them to tour throughout the country while still undergraduates, and they earned over 50 medals, including the Golden Gloves title, between them in

Five must-have tech gifts for the college bound (ARA) - Buying a gift for the college-bound student can be a challenge, whether it’s a highschool graduation present or a back-to-university purchase. While most young people would likely welcome a technology gift, it can be difficult to know what they’ll find most usefulespecially if they already have nearly every gadget imaginable. If you’ll be buying for a college kid this summer, here are five tech gift ideas that can help make their college careers easier, more fun and more memorable: 1. Make it a Mac - Chances are, he already has an iPod he treasures and she couldn’t get through the day without her iPhone. And a laptop is an essential tool for everyone in college these days. The MacBook Pro’s durable hardware, appealing design and ability to run Windows make it a great choice for students. It will work seamlessly with other Apple

gadgets, and can even run Windows applications - all on one computer. 2. Making a Mac play nicely with Windows programs Challenges with running Windows software on Mac machines may have caused some users to shy away from Apple products in the past, but those issues can be resolved easily. Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac allows users to run both Mac and Windows apps at the same time on their Mac, without the need to restart the computer. The software allows users to copy, cut and paste between Windows and Mac apps, and run other systems like Google Chrome or Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It also works with the Parallels Mobile app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch so users can access and run everything on their Mac from anywhere. A free trial is available for download at www.parallels.com/

desktop. 3. Mainstream and reliable Even if they have a Mac, your college student can still use Microsoft Office for Home and Student 2010 for Windows. This essential productivity software includes many of the basic software that most businesses depend upon, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and One Note. It includes features such as creating a Pivot Table Chart in Excel that are not in the Mac version of Office, so go for the PC version and pair it with Parallels Desktop for Mac to get all the features students need to succeed at school and work. 4. Storage and backup options - College students create, move, use and save volumes of data every day, whether it’s downloading music, uploading video or submitting

Is your new home safe and secure? alarms may not operate efficiently and often cause nuisance alarms. By the time a smoke alarm is 10 years old, it has a 30 percent chance of not alarming due to age-related factors such as accumulated dust, insects and airborne contaminants, according to a Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center study. If you don’t know how old your smoke alarms are, or if you know they were installed more than 10 years ago, it’s replacement time. Additionally, the survey found that most American families are underprotected when it comes to fire safety. Sixty-seven percent of respondents have four or fewer smoke alarms in their homes, but the average U.S. single-family home should have at least five alarms. When replacing your home’s alarms every 10 years, look for smoke alarms with a 10-year sealed lithium battery that will keep your alarms powered for a decade. The alarm will never need its battery replaced during its useful life. Or, select a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, which offers a voice warning and uses the latest technology to help minimize nuisance alarms that often occur when cooking. As you prioritize your move-in to-do list, remember that an ounce of prevention today could save a life tomorrow.

- Summer brings a full court press for moving season - with June being the busiest month for Americans to relocate. While aesthetics often take precedence when settling into a “new-to-you” home, it’s important for homeowners and renters alike to complete a safety check of their abode to reduce the risk of unintentional injuries. One of the greatest hazards in a home that usually is the furthest from the mind is fire. But, it’s one of the easiest to address. “As we approach Home Safety Month in June, there is an urgent need to educate families about fire safety,” says Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “Fire and burns remain a leading cause of unintentional injury and death for children, particularly those under the age of 5. Replacing older smoke alarms is a simple way for parents to help protect their families.” More than twothirds of residential fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or with non-working alarms according to the National Fire Protection Association. One in four families with homes built prior to 2002 is at risk due to aging (10 or more years old) smoke alarms, according to a recent survey from Kidde. Fire experts recommend replacing alarms every 10 years as older smoke (ARA)

Most Americans don’t have life insurance, but wish they did (ARA) - If you know you need life insurance, but still don’t have individual coverage, you’re not alone. According to the Life Insurance and Market Research Association, most Americans say life insurance is important, yet only one-third of them are covered by an individual policy. That’s the lowest level in 50 years. “Most Americans know life insurance protects their loved ones against financial hardship in the event of an unexpected death,” says Brian Murphy, who heads up The Hartford’s life insurance business. “But 40 percent of consumers get so discouraged by how long it takes to buy a permanent policy that they simply give up without getting the coverage they know they need.”

Applicants who want to buy life insurance are sometimes faced with perplexing forms and an approval process that can take more than a month to complete. Murphy says there are new ways of buying life insurance that take the pain out of the process. He also has some suggestions for how to improve on the old way of doing things. “When today’s consumers are used to buying products online and receiving them at home within 48 hours,” Murphy says, “they have little patience for waiting a month or more to receive a new life insurance policy.” Fortunately, consumers can help streamline the application process. Murphy offers four tips for speeding things up:

• Do your homework first. Find out about your options before you fill out a single application. You should know how much insurance you need, what type of policy you want and the terms and premium you can live with before you submit an application to any insurer. • Check your credit report before you apply. Many insurers take your credit score and habits into account when determining your life insurance premium. Knowing your score in advance can help ensure there are no surprises when you get your approved policy and the bill for your first premium. • Be thorough and honest on the application. Virtually every insurer will ask health-related

questions, and many will also require a health exam. Being less than truthful about weight, lifestyle habits and health conditions can cause your application to be delayed or even rejected. • Allow sufficient time when scheduling your health exam so that neither you nor the examiner feels rushed or pressured. Ask what the exam will entail and if there are any requirements, like fasting or drinking lots of liquids. When making the appointment, also ask if you will need any additional tests - such as an EKG or X-rays - and find out if you can arrange for those to be done quickly. • Consider taking a new approach. Consumers aren’t the only ones who recognize the importance of accelerating the application process; insurers do, too. The Hartford, for example, recently introduced a new

patent-pending application process it calls Issue First. With Issue First, applicants answer eight questions and sign and file application forms their electronically. Issue First trims the time it takes eligible clients to receive a policy down from 48 days (an industry average) to as little as 48 hours. “By creating a new way of assessing a person’s risk factors and accelerating the process, consumers can now get life insurance coverage in a fraction of the time it used to take,” Murphy says. “And that means far more people are getting the coverage they really need to protect their families and loved ones.” In a pilot study conducted by the company, clients who opted for the Issue First process ended up buying a life insurance policy 95 percent of the time, compared to a 65 percent closure rate for clients who took the traditional application route.

Navigating the Learning Curve of College Visits Finding the perfect college is kind of like investigative journalism -- you must do loads of research, ask all the right questions and visit the scene to gather first-hand knowledge and experience. College visits should start percolating in the parental and student lobes toward the end of junior year and the start of senior year. Road trips may be necessary, and several at that. The most comprehensive virtual tours, G-chats and online scouring simply cannot replace the experience of seeing real dorm rooms or eating in actual dining halls. As any tooth-and-nails journalist will tell you about a hot story, parents should have a strategy for visiting

college campuses and getting the most out of each tour. Prepare to be schooled by Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president of education outreach for tutoring authority Sylvan Learning. • Cast a wide net. If your high-schooler hasn’t done so already, help them compile a list of potential universities. Ask what aspects of college life -- sports, extracurriculars, campus/enrollment size, dorm life, religious affiliations, academic strengths and offerings -- are important to them and use those criteria. Mark choices as dream, target and safety schools based on your child’s academic performance and test scores. The initial list can be pared down

to a realistic number of colleges to visit. • Get SAT/ACT prep support. If some of the dream schools seem out of range due to unsatisfactory test scores, get your student SAT help from the local Sylvan Learning (www.sylvanlearning.com) tutoring experts. The level of competition to get into top schools is more intense than ever. “The number of early admission applications has increased dramatically, with some universities seeing double-digit jumps. To begin the college process, most students applying to competitive colleges now take the SAT/ACT more than once,” says Bavaria. • Go while college is in session. Weekends and holidays

can be dead zones for college life, which won’t give your student a real glimpse of the campus. Call ahead to schedule tours, and make sure college is in session and students are attending classes so potential applicants see the whole experience. • Ask smart questions. Encourage your kid to question everyone -- students, professors, advisors, librarians, coaches and more. Ask the same questions of different students and professors to compare answers. Parents, remember to hit key topics that students might forget, like financial aid and safety. You can usually trust them to inquire about food selection and social activities.

Today, as we speak, it is selling for $1,650 an ounce and it has traded as high as $1,900. Gold is the “Sentinel” commodity. You can see what is happening in the world. Adrienne Arsht Center Brings To The Stage Katie Couric’s Childrens Musical “The Brand New Kid” By Eleanor Hannan - Aventura Digest

JUNE • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 18

The Arsht Center is delighted to present this heartwarming new musical, a story about discrimination on a grade school level. “The Brand New Kid,” adapted from Katie Couric’s popular children’s book is a production presentation for young audiences, recommended for ages 4-8. It’s the first day of second grade when a new boy named Lazio Gasky, just moved to the United States, arrives at Brookhaven School. He is a typical seven-year old boy, but because he doesn’t speak quite like the others and because he’s too strange and too different to fit in, the teasing and haunting begin. When popular Ellie McSnelly realizes how tough Lazio has it, she risks being ridiculed and spends an afternoon with him, playing soccer, eating strudel and making new friends, in addition to teaching their classmates a valuable lesson. The obvious message here is to never judge a book by its cover and that everybody needs to be given a chance. This uplifting new musical proves that being yourself is the best way to be. Don’t miss this delightful family musical opening June 9 through June 17, 2012. Performances vary Tuesday through Sunday at either 10 a. m., 11 a.m., or 12:30 noon at the box office, located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Tickets are $20. For more information, call: (305) 949-6722.

The Broward Stage Door Theatre Presents The Most Touching True Story “The Immigrant” In 1909, Haskell Harelik, a young Russian Jewish man, fleeing the pogroms of Czarist Russia, gets off the boat and lands into the port city of Galveston. Speaking no English, he manages to get together a wheelbarrow and a bunch of bananas and heads north entering a rural community of the small Baptist town of Hamilton, deep in the heart of Texas. He is not able to go any further. Exhausted, he lands in the front yard of Milton and Ima Perry. Ima, active with Christian Charities, convinces her husband to give Haskell a room for the night, but when she finds out Haskell is Jewish, she has second thoughts. The play covers the

struggle of an alien to overcome hostility and hardship. As time goes by, Milton and Ima would like to see him go, but are taken by his excitement about being in his new

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 - April 19) The month starts out with a lunar eclipse in Sagittarius, 14 degrees, a full moon, so things may be busier than you anticipated - keep your bags packed. It may be that you will be asked to get on a plane, rapidly. Mars, your ruler, however, will not be cooperative, so you may have to move up the deadline on a work project, or discover other problems concerning a work project that you need to address.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) Dear Virgo, this month has the power to literally change everything! You will find yourself between two major eclipses. They are critical to note because typically we have four in any given year and right now we are experiencing two. Last month we saw the first one, May 20, and this month we have the second, a full moon lunar eclipse, June 4. It is clear that your career and home life are both blazing with developments these days.

AQUARIUS (January 20- February 18) You have an extraordinary chart, with layer upon layer of signals that from now on, life is about to become joyous and softer, and far more romantic than anything you’ve experienced over past years. It really does not matter how old you are, where you live, or what your marital status. The beauty of life is that we can always start fresh or encourage present love to become deeper and closer.

TAURUS (April 20- May 20) As you begin June, you find yourself in your final days of being the celestial favorite, for you will still be the lucky one to have Jupiter in Taurus. Soon you will have to hand over your diamond, ruby, and emerald-encrusted crown to Gemini, dear Taurus, as your reign is coming to an end on June 11. If you hope to see any VIPs, make it a point to do so prior to mid-month.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) This month should bring welcome relief. You’ve been frustrated with many challenges and obstacles lately, but you should start to see heartening signs that you are coming out of the woods. Difficulties cannot last forever, and with an unusual buildup of planets in fellow air sign Gemini - Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, the Sun, and TWO new moons - opportunity to change your circumstances will now begin to appear.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Your career has been setting off brilliant fireworks, a wonderful development, but it looks as though this month you need to tend to home and family, too. How you will tend to both in a month that will be packed with activity is anyone’s guess, but somehow as a Pisces, you instinctively know how to juggle your schedule in masterful ways that confound your onlookers. You can certainly know how to get a lot done, and this month it appears you will prove it, six ways to Sunday.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) June is birthday month, but it’s more than that for it may also mark a complete turning point for the better for you! On June 11 you will be crowned the darling of the zodiac when Jupiter, the good fortune planet, moves into Gemini for the first time in twelve years. Not since June 30, 2000 to July 12, 2001 have you had this level of cosmic help, for that is the last time you had Jupiter at your side.

LEO (July 23- August 22) How is your career going, dear Leo? You are now in the final ten days of having fortunate Jupiter brilliantly lighting your career sector. Once you reach June 11, Jupiter will say his goodbyes and leave, not to return to your fame and honors sector until 2023. Until then, you will have an outstanding edge in all professional matters. If you can think of any top executive you’d like to meet to present an idea or a proposal, consider making that appointment early in the month.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) Years that present eclipses in your own Sun sign, dear Sagittarius, almost always turn out to be watershed years. This is true for you now, as the eclipses in your sign and opposite sign of Gemini are back. The first in this series started in December 21, 2010, and continued last year, June 1 and 15, and in November 25, and December 2011 last year. Think back to those dates - at least one should have brought up important news, either on the date or within one month of the day, plus or minus one week. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) This may turn out to be a very hard-working month for you, but even so, it will be one that will turn out to be highly productive. Four heavenly bodies will crowd your sixth house of work projects, so it does not look as though you will have time to take a vacation in June. Instead, you will get a chance to show off your considerable managerial skills, experience, and special talents.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22) In June, you may want to retreat to think about your next step. Four planets are stacking up in your privacy sector, so if you dream about getting a little rest as you hide under your shell, you will find a way to do it. Rest is a good idea, for most of the month will put a spotlight on your health and well-being. This would be a perfect month to make medical and dental appointments before it gets busy again. If you’d like to enter therapy to change a habit or pattern, it’s the right time to do so.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) It will be all about money, and for a change, almost all the news will be welcome! Your new emphasis on finding new sources of income and managing money differently began to emerge as a major theme last month at the May 20 eclipse, a new moon. That eclipse was both friendly and powerful enough to immediately start the ball rolling. That new moon fell close to Jupiter, giver of gifts and luck, and that was a very fortunate sign of things to come.

Health Delaying treatment for minor health issues could cost more in the long run (ARA) - Many families go through a check and balance process when it comes to their health. They try to determine if avoiding the cost of medical bills as well as time off from work is worth the risk of delaying medical treatment for a problem - especially when they question how serious the problem is for their long term health. Many health experts agree that delaying needed and recommended treatments will end up costing individuals and the country far more in the long run. Some relatively minor problems, including high blood pressure, hearing loss, joint pain and carpal tunnel syndrome tend to escalate if left untreated, putting a patient at risk for more serious (and expensive) health consequences.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a good example of an ailment you might think you can live with rather than pay the cost of treating it. It’s surprisingly common, with up to 5 percent of the workforce affected, according to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal. On average, affected workers lost 27 days of work to recuperate from CTS in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With people spending more time on their computer or online, more people are likely to be exposed to the repetitive motions that can lead to CTS. While severe cases may require surgical treatment, studies have shown that early treatment with splinting and massage can help alleviate this painful condition. Appropriate splinting (or bracing) helps keep

the affected wrist in a neutral position, minimizing pressure on the irritated nerve, according to the Mayo Clinic. Massage can also be effective, researchers have found. A report in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies indicates massage can reduce CTS symptoms. While only your doctor can make an actual diagnosis, once you know you have carpal tunnel syndrome there are simple, low-cost steps you can take to supplement your own treatment, including: • Adjust your posture to mini-

mize strain. Sit up straight and don’t rest your wrists on the edge of your keyboard tray while typing; try to maintain a straight wrist position. • Stay hydrated. Proper hydration is essential to the healthy functioning of all our tissues. • Ask your doctor to recommend appropriate exercises to keep the wrist flexible. • Wear a wrist brace, even when you sleep. A special night brace is best. While you can purchase a low-cost brace in most drugstores, a better option might be one that combines bracing and

massage benefits, such as the IMAK SmartGlove. Made of washable, breathable cotton material, the SmartGlove encourages proper hand and wrist position to help alleviate carpal tunnel symptoms, and an ergoBeads pad cushions your wrist and improves circulation with a massaging effect. It makes sense to save yourself long-term pain and money by addressing the problem early. Consult your doctor if you experience wrist pain that might be carpal tunnel syndrome. Chef Spike Mendelsohn Shares Ingredients for Managing Acid Reflux Disease (ARA) - Nearly 19 million Americans are affected by acid reflux disease (ARD), also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is characterized by heartburn occurring two or more days a week despite treatment and diet changes. Spike Mendelsohn - a well-known celebrity chef and owner of several restaurants in the Washington, DC area - is one of the millions affected by ARD, and he has to manage the uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms of heartburn related to acid reflux disease. “Just like you, I face stressful situations every day - in the kitchen, at work, and at home,” notes Chef Spike, who grew up working in the restaurant business alongside his family. “As someone who has acid reflux disease, I work hard to make sure my heartburn doesn’t heat up. I’m passionate about everything related to food learning new cuisines from my travels, getting creative with my own recipes, and sharing what I’ve learned with others. I’ve tried to instill that same thinking to my health - being proactive helps me manage my acid reflux disease.” Chef Spike has partnered with Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A, Inc., the makers of DEXILANT (dexlansoprazole), on the “Don’t Let it Burn” campaign, to help educate millions of Americans about acid reflux disease and the importance of talking to a doctor for information about managing symptoms, including diet and lifestyle changes. Lifestyle tips, music, heartburn-friendly recipes and more can all be found on DontLetitBurn.com. “To help manage my acid reflux disease, I worked with my doctor to come up with a treatment plan that, for me, includes taking DEXILANT,” explains Chef Spike. “Together with adjustments to

what I eat and my lifestyle, it’s helped turn down the heat on the heartburn I experience because of my ARD. Everyone is different, so it’s important for people to work with their doctor to come up with a management approach that works for them.” “It is very important for patients to be proactive and understand that they can work with their doctor to find an appropriate plan for treating their acid reflux disease,” says David A. Peura, M.D., Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Virginia School of Medicine. “One treatment option I prescribe for my appropriate ARD patients is DEXILANT. DEXILANT can provide up to 24 hours of heartburn relief.” With personal tips and recipes from Mendelsohn, www.DontLetitBurn.com contains helpful information and facts about acid reflux disease, including: Acid reflux disease can occur in both men and women, with varying severity of the disease among patients. Lifestyle modifications are part of a treatment plan to help manage a patient’s acid reflux disease. Some include: Avoid common trigger foods, such as fried or fatty foods, citrus foods, onions, and tomato-based foods as well as alcohol, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, chocolate, peppermint and spearmint. Maintain a healthy body weight. Eat small, frequent meals rather than large amounts of food at one time. Try not to wear tight-fitting clothing around your waist. Bone health is a critical, yet often underrecognized facet of prostate cancer. In early stages of prostate cancer, a man may receive hormone therapy that can cause bone loss and weakening. When prostate cancer advances, the most common place for it to spread is to the bone. This can cause severe pain and lead to bone complications, such as fractures and spinal cord injury, which may require surgery or radiation. In fact, roughly 75 percent of patients with advanced prostate cancer and approximately 90 percent of patients with castrate-resistant prostate cancer will develop bone metastases. Yet, results from a recent survey showed that only seven percent of men with prostate cancer were familiar with the potential for bone complications from cancer spreading. “Cancer can have a serious impact on a man’s bones during his prostate cancer journey. The results can be debilitating and greatly impact a man’s life,” said Fred Mills, former chairman of the board, Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network. “It’s important for all men to educate themselves and become aware of risk factors and ways to help protect their bones from the effects of cancer.” Talk to your doctor for more information. There is also an available resource, the “Bone Health in Focus” report, to help prostate cancer patients and their caregivers learn more about how cancer can affect a man’s bones. The report features valuable information such as personal stories, tips, and survey results - that can assist men in their cancer journey.

More information about bone health and prostate cancer is available in the “Bone Health in Focus” reports available at www.BoneHealthinFocus.com.

(ARA) - Prostate cancer is a serious issue for men, with one in six diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. However, it is especially important for AfricanAmerican men, who have a one in five chance of being diagnosed, which is the highest incident rate than any other group in the U.S. A recent survey of 90 men showed that men with prostate cancer aren’t thinking about a potentially serious health concern that nearly all patients with advanced disease will experience - bone problems. “Prostate cancer is a health concern that all men should be aware of, including African-American men who are at higher risk for this disease,” said Dr. Kris Gaston, urologist and clinical assistant professor of surgery/urology at the University of North Carolina. “I treat many of these men who are unaware of their risk of prostate cancer and are often diagnosed at later stages of the disease.” When an African-American man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, he often has a more advanced level of the disease. In fact, a study looking at how prostate cancer can spread to other parts of the body found that African-American men were more likely than Caucasian men to have widespread disease with pain in their bones and had lower physical activity status. These results may be because African-American men are less likely to get tested for prostate cancer. However, there are ways for AfricanAmerican men to protect themselves. It is important for men to look out for prostate cancer early by speaking with their physicians about the signs and symptoms of the disease.

Big design ideas for small kitchen spaces (ARA) - Bigger isn’t always better in the real estate world, and what’s more, it’s not always possible. With more baby boomers downsizing from McMansions to smaller, more manageable houses, and a growing number of people opting to rent rather than buy, many families are looking for new ways to decorate, design and work with smaller spaces. Kitchens sell homes, but this most-used room in the house hasn’t escaped the “less is more” trend, either. Interior designers, decorators and home product makers are responding to the growing demand for practical, beautiful options that make sense in smaller kitchens. If you’re looking to make a big impact in a small kitchen, here are a few ideas to get you started: Work the walls - You may love your cozy kitchen, but that doesn’t mean you want to make it look or feel any smaller than it already is. Lighter wall colors can help a little kitchen feel more open and airy. One winning decorating technique for small kitchens is to paint the majority of the wall space in a light neutral tone, like a pale cream or taupe and then add a pop of brighter or darker color

to one accent wall or area. You can edge up the excitement of this technique by using a mural for kitchens on the accent wall, rather than just a different paint color. Have an oddly shaped niche in your kitchen? You can turn that problematic space into a design statement with custom, repositionable wallpaper that can be custom-sized and customcolored to fit your specifications. This unique product can be adhered and re-ahered hundreds of times so you can take it with you to your next house if you choose. Smart-size your appliances - Sure that 30-cubicfoot stainless steel refrigerator is beautiful in the showroom, but how much will you love it when you can’t fully open the door in your small kitchen? Refrigerators come in several sizes, so you should be able to find one that will fit

your space. The same is true for stoves, microwaves and dishwashers. Choosing appliances that make size-sense for the space you have not only improves the livability of your petite kitchen, it can improve your efficiency as well. Get creative with storage - One of the biggest challenges of a small kitchen is finding space for everything from pots and pans to flatware, dishes and foodstuffs. Small spaces call for storage creativity. Whether you hang some pots and pans overhead, replace traditional cabinet shelves with pullout drawers or use special racks to store plates vertically, you can find plenty of creative small-kitchen storage solutions. Liven things up with light - Often, a small kitchen will have just one window - or no window at all. Yet light is an important way to make a tight

your windowless kitchen, consider installing a skylight. Tubular skylights can bring sunlight into your ground-floor kitchen even if there’s a second floor above it. Small kitchens are here to stay, whether as part of the trend toward

Five rules for buying a foreclosure or short sale with confidence (ARA) - Buyers are still clamoring for real estate deals in this turbulent market. Foreclosures and short sales offer some of the best bargains, but also have a higher risk level. Still, more than four in five adults think foreclosures and short sales can be good deals, according to a recent American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) survey. Some analysts say the rebound has begun and home prices may rise by the end of 2012. This means now may be buyers’ last chance to take advantage of affordable properties and low interest rates. If you want to score a bargain before the housing market recovers, you’ll need to follow a few rules to invest with certainty.

Make a wise investment by adhering to these five rules while shopping distressed properties: Rule 1: Position yourself for success Before starting your search, get preapproved for a mortgage so when a good deal presents itself, you’re positioned to submit a bid right away to be the first offer on the bank’s desk. Work with an experienced real estate agent who can help guide you through the daunting sea of foreclosures and short sales. Bidding can be complicated and timeconsuming, especially when working with a home sale needing bank approval. A good agent will know how to navigate through the paperwork and red tape. Rule 2: Do your research A real estate agent can help you with research, but it’s wise to do some on your own. Are there any undisclosed liens on the property? Is the seller behind on his property taxes? What permit records does the city have on file? This information will be critical during decision-making. Work with your agent to ensure the contract requires any

delinquent taxes, liens or assessments will be paid prior to you taking ownership of the property. Rule 3: Always get a home inspection Eighty-four percent of adults surveyed by ASHI said they would be more likely to purchase a distressed property after a home inspection has determined its condition. A home inspection gives you the confidence to move forward with your purchase because you’ll have as much knowledge as possible about the condition of the property. An inspector will visually examine the condition of the home’s roof, attic and insulation, foundation, basement and structural components, as well as interior plumbing and

electrical systems. Be sure to find an ASHI-Certified Inspector (ACI) to ensure your inspector is experienced, as many states have minimal licensing requirements. To find a local ACI, use ASHI’s “Find an Inspector” tool on www.ASHI.org. Rule 4: Budget for repairs When looking at short sales and foreclosures, remember price is only one aspect to consider. A home will almost always require some type of repair. After receiving your inspection report, you can estimate costs associated with necessary repairs, maintenance or energyefficient improvements. Rule 5: Assess the neighborhood Location should be a

top consideration when purchasing real estate, and in a tough housing market, it’s even more important. A home has limited worth if it’s located in a less desirable neighborhood. High foreclosure rates can turn a once-desirable neighborhood into one many might likely avoid. These locations are likely to see a slower recovery than more populated or favorable areas less affected by the economy. Make location as important as price when making a purchase decision. Protect yourself with knowledge and expert advice to make a confident, smart decision about your largest investment.
