Artist Skip Hartzell: Dog’s Best Friend For Skip Hartzell, known locally as “the dog artist,” inspiration comes in the form of a morning walk—accompanied by a furry friend. The act of making art is one of benevolence for Hartzell, and also his dog art sells. He is a longtime supporter of no-kill animal rescues and donates proceeds from the sale of his artworks to animal-rescue, no kill shelters. The artist creates large paintings and works on paper that capture the essence of “dog”. He is best known for his unique sculptures recognized immediately by their distinct form and style that only Hartzell can produce. His painterly expression captures each dog’s own personality with beautiful textures, line and brush strokes using mixed media to bring each dog to life. Whether he’s painting or sculpting, Hartzell’s dogs have a wonderful quality of friendliness

about them, and it’s hard to keep yourself from reaching out to touch. And that’s perfectly okay with Hartzell. He’s never been one to place a rope around his artwork. “The texture is so important because the tactile experience of sculpture is so primal for me,” he says. “You grab with your hands and just start to mush things together and get your fingers on the materials, and there is just such a richness to the feel.” He says whenever he’s doing a show, he is quick to hand his sculptures to the patrons so they can enjoy the feeling, too. And whether it’s paint on canvas or sculpture, the texture is one of the most captivating and inviting parts of experiencing his artwork. Hartzell may not set out to mimic the look of someone’s beloved pet, but he says his sculptures and paintings often evoke a fond memory of a furry family member.

The artist has held numerous solo exhibitions at notable art galleries and prestigious art fairs such as Art Palm Beach, A.E.

Backus Museum, ArtHouse 429, Paul Fisher Gallery, Aqua Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach and many more. For sales,

Could You Outlive Your Retirement Funds? By Alexander Joyce

People are living longer, and as wonderful as that news is to many, there’s a possible downside: outliving your money in retirement. “It’s a very large fear many people have,” says Alexander Joyce, president/CEO of ReJoyce Financial LLC (www.ReJoyceFinancial.co m) and author of ReJoyce In Your Retirement: Everything You Need To Know To Get Everything You Want. “Most retirement plans have not incorporated the longevity risk. And without mitigating that, many middle-class retirees could exhaust their 401(k)s and be left with only Social Security and a little equity in their homes.” The financial worries about retirement and the planning options can be overwhelming. One of the concerns people have is getting appropriate advice and finding a financial advisor who puts the client’s interests above his or her own. That type of retirement planner is defined as a fiduciary, and according to a survey by Financial Engines, 93 percent of Americans think financial advisors who provide retirement advice should be fiduciaries — legally required to put their clients’ best interest first. On the other hand, 53 percent of those respondents mistakenly believe that all financial advisors are fiduciaries. “Trust is imperative, especially where a client’s retirement is concerned,” Joyce says. “An advisor working as a fiduciary is held to a high standard of honesty and full disclosure to the client. And there are three critical aspects of

retirement planning in which a fiduciary can help guide the client to both protect their retirement assets and prosper.” Those three areas are: Reduce sequenceof-return risks. This refers to the order of annual investment returns, and it becomes a concern for retirees who are living off the income and capital of their investments. “The danger comes when an investor receives lower or negative returns due to withdrawals made from their investment,” Joyce says. “The timing of taking those returns impacts wealth. A planner who’s a fiduciary has multiple ways to reduce sequence-of-returns risk by allowing the portfolio to stay ahead of inflation. You utilize other incomeproducing vehicles in the portfolio.” Prioritize a tax plan. “Understand that in retirement you’re creating your own income from qualified money — money that’s never been taxed before,” Joyce says. “It’s vital to have a tax plan that can fit into your portfolio. For example, the Required Minimum Distribution at age 701/2 is something many people are not prepared for in terms of tax impact. The RMDs have never been such a concern in our economy than they are now, because such a large percentage of baby boomers are over 701/2. Having a reallocation plan or a Roth conversion conversation is important to avoid higher tax burdens.” Create an estate plan. Procrastination is an obstacle for many when it comes to estate

planning, Joyce says, and it’s important to differentiate between a will, which goes through probate, and a trust. “Understand how those things fit in the portfolio, and the difference between live-on money and leave-behind money,” he says. “You need to establish goals for the assets. A lot of people want to leave a legacy, but they don’t know how large, or how, or when. A fiduciary can help you leverage technology and look at a realistic rate of return, based on your projected longevity.” “Having all these planning tools under a fullservice fiduciary roof is powerful,” Joyce says, “because the baby boomer generation doesn’t like change. They need a sense of security before reaching retirement; solid options to make their financial fears and uncertainty go away.” About Alexander Joyce: Alexander Joyce is CEO and president of ReJoyce Financial LLC (www.ReJoyceFinancial.co m), a full-service retirement income planning firm in Indianapolis, Ind. Tips for serving and enjoying red wine this summer (BPT) - With the summer season in full swing, entertaining heads outdoors, with leisurely BBQs and picnics forming the backdrop for gatherings of family and friends. Choosing a great wine to pair with the menu is a thoughtful touch, but white wines aren’t the only options during the warmer months. Even as temperatures rise, versatile red wine deserves a place on the table, and these quick tips can enhance your understanding and enjoyment of wines all summer long.

Here are a few tips about red wine:

JULY 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 16

Take a chill. Red wine should not be served warm. One of the first things many people hear about wine is that white wines should be chilled, and red wines should be left at room temperature. However, the wine experts at CK Mondavi and Family explain that people typically over-chill white wines, while people usually serve red wines far too warm. Why does temperature matter? Serving wine at the right temperature allows all of the aromas and flavors to be enjoyed at their best. Take white wines out of the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes, to bring the temperature to 49-55 degrees before serving. Red wines are at their best slightly cooler than room temperature, around 60-65 degrees. Place a bottle in the refrigerator or use a wine cooler to chill before serving, but not for too long. The bottle should not be cold, but cool to the touch. For BBQs and outdoor gatherings, nestle a bottle in an icy cooler for a few minutes before open-

ing. Once poured into a glass, any wine will warm up, so it’s always better to start serving at a cooler temperature to begin with.

fun with this new wine,” says Randy Herron, head winemaker. “It’s juicy and full-bodied, with flavors of strawberry and dark plum.”

Breathe. Red wines benefit from a little air. Red wines typically benefit from some extended time to breathe or be exposed to air. This helps optimize its aromas and flavors. Swirling the wine a little in the glass is also a way to help release its aromas. Letting an open bottle sit for a few minutes will suffice for most wines. Pouring into a decanter not only looks fancy, but serves to further aerate wines, and will prevent pouring any sediment into a glass.

Go bold. Red wines pair well with strong flavors. When pairing wine with food, choose flavors that complemint each other think lighter wines with more delicate flavors, and bolder wines with stronger, spicier foods. For this reason, many red wines pair well with sharp or smoked cheeses, red meat - including cured, salty or smoked meats and grilled vegetables. That’s why red wine can be a great choice for your summer barbecue. Pairing a sweet wine like Sunset Sweet Red Blend with a tangy and spicy barbecue sauce can be a match made in heaven. Even newcomers to wine will appreciate the mouthwatering flavors and exciting pairings you offer your guests at your barbecue or soiree. Plan your summer parties with a good red wine in mind, and you can’t go wrong.

Sweeten up. Not all red wine is dry. For a crowd-pleasing choice, choose a fruity wine. This season, CK Mondavi and Family is introducing a limitedtime-offering of new Sunset Sweet Red Blend, a luscious, smooth wine that complemints a wide variety of fare.”We’re having

PLANT-BASED FESTIVAL TO BE HELD JULY 28 AT GULFSTREAM PARK By Marylynne Newmark • Aventura Digest

JULY 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 18

We all want to live a long and healthier life, right? If you haven’t already started this journey, now is your time. And, if you already are on track, you have an opportunity to enrich your trip. The very first PLANT-BASED FESTIVAL, sponsored by Hallandale Beach City Commissioner Anabelle LimaTaub and The Village at Gulfstream Park might be the game-changer that points you in the right direction. “It will be a day of food, drink and fashion,” says the Commissioner,” that can direct people to live happy, fulfilled lives while making positive contributions to the community.” Alex Schreer, Director of Experiential Marketing for Madison Marquette who represents The Village at Gulfstream Park, informed us that Champion’s Plaza at Gulfstream Park will be transformed into a village of food trucks, consumer goods, and some surprises still in the works. Food vendors will be serving unique delicious vegan and organic food. Ecoproducts and plant-based clothing, as well as oils, soaps, plants, and hemp products will be available. Healthy drinks will be accessible at several sites. Festival pro-

moters recommend that you consider bringing your own reusable water bottles, cups and utensils as an environmental consideration. “All during the day, Main Stage at Gulfstream Park, will be the center point for DJ music, presenters, celebrities and speakers,” says Alyssa Jones-Wood, Green Initiatives Coordinator for the City of Hallandale Beach. Presently confirmed as keynote speakers are Michelle Larea, Nutrition and Diabetes Educator at Aventura Hospital’s Diabetes Outreach program and Commissioner Lima-Taub, initiator of the Plant-based Festival concept. There also will be an “Express Yourself” tent, ongoing workshops, as well as wellness, fitness and sustainability activities for adults and children to liven the day with some interactive fun. Why an emphasis on Plant-based living? According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) International Medicine in 2016, high animal protein intake was positively associated with cardiovascular mortality, whereas high plant-

based protein intake had just the opposite effect, especially among individuals with at least one lifestyle risk factor. Many studies since then have shown that modification in a diet that reduces red meat shows a marked decrease in cardiovascular incidents, resulting in an increase in longevity. As far as the environmental impact of a meat-based society, the Hippocrates Institute, named in honor of the ancient Greek physician who recorded the first medical case studies, printed a report back in 2012 stating that “Greenhouse gases attributed to livestock are more than double that of transportation emissions.” The report also noted that livestock are fed 35% of the world’s grains, while large pockets of the world go hungry. And that was back in 2012. There are countless books and a myriad of literature available online to know more about plant-based living and the positive effects of vegan diets; you can start with the International Vegan Association website. There also are many podcasts and software avenues that educate and assist in resources and competi-

tive pricing for vegan foods and plantbased products. But, as a real starter, you can begin face-to-face with experts, information and resources right at your fingertips on Sunday, July 28th from 11 AM to 3:30 PM

at The Village at Gulfstream Park. Join the City of Hallandale Beach on a day that may impact your life, but most importantly, improve your health. For additional information, visit www.thevillagesatgulfstreampark .com or Alyssa Jones-Wood, Hallandale Beach Green Initiatives Coordinator at 954-457-1617.

7 steps to health care cost savings (BPT) - Health care is more complicated than ever. With rising premiums and different levels of coverage, it can be confusing to know what you can afford when it comes to wellness visits, urgent care and prescriptions.

Here are some simple ideas that could help you save on health care. 1. Get informed. If you have health insurance, make sure you understand what’s covered, especially if you are diagnosed with a chronic condition such as diabetes, high cholesterol or hypertension. If something is not clear or you are unsure about what’s covered, call your insurance carrier and make sure they provide you with the answers you need. 2. Save on your prescriptions. If you are uninsured, or your insurance doesn’t cover

certain prescription medications, an Inside Rx card may be an option for you. The card is not insurance but a free discount prescription card that provides savings off select brand prescription medications and generic medications. There’s even a card for your pet’s prescriptions. Download the card on your phone and show it to your pharmacist to see if you can benefit and how much you could save. Eligibility requirements and a complete list of the medications offered can be found at InsideRx.com. 3. Shop around. You could save money by researching which pharmacy offers the best deal in your area. Inside Rx can also help you find the best deal for your specific medication at a pharmacy close to you if you are using the discount card. Also, discuss with your doctor if switching to a generic medi-

cation is an option for you; this could save you money when purchasing your medications. 4. Utilize your provider’s online platform. If your healthcare provider offers an online medical records system, log in and check to make sure you are up to date on vaccines, boosters, wellness visits and screenings. Check your insurance coverage before scheduling, but don’t delay on any of these, as the cost to your wallet and your health could be greater if issues are left untreated. Identifying problems early keeps you healthy and saves you money down the road. 5. Take advantage of wellness plans. If your employer offers a wellness plan, participate. You may get perks such as partial coverage of gym memberships with some employers’ plans. Talk to your

employer’s human resources office about health savings or other plans that may be available to save you out-of-pocket costs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to make sure you understand how the plans work.

are uninsured or have a high deductible. Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

6. Don’t delay treatment. If you’ve been diagnosed with a condition that requires treatment or medication, don’t put off starting your treatment. Talk with your doctor about any financial concerns. 7. Plan for medical bills. Just as you would ask a mechanic to estimate the cost of service on your car ahead of time, don’t be afraid to ask providers what services will cost. Many providers will work with you to arrange a payment plan when a medical bill is not covered by your insurance, or if you

Rather than waiting for issues to arise, take charge of your health and plan for your health care related costs. While you can’t prepare for everything, you can give yourself every advantage by being informed, using the resources available and asking questions.

of the dates and amounts of future payments to avoid unpleasant surprises.

2. Keep and use longstanding accounts. Don’t cancel an older account in an attempt to stop yourself from overspending, as the length of your credit history matters in traditional scoring methods. Use your accounts with care, and don’t charge more than you can afford. If you haven’t used an account in a long time, make a small purchase or two to keep the account active.

4. Test your credit score know-how. Visit www.CreditScoreQuiz.org, created by VantageScore Solutions along with its partner, Consumer Federation of America, to see what you know and learn ways to improve your credit score. No matter your situation, you can improve your own credit outlook by taking stock and following these tips to boost your score.

3. Use technology to your advantage. Many companies allow you to set up automatic payments of minimum amounts to help you avoid late fees, or will send email or text reminders when a bill is coming due. As long as you have the income to support automatic payments (and/or ready reserve at your bank or credit union just in case), go ahead and sign up. Just make sure to keep a record

1. Assess your report. Get a copy of your report from the three major credit reporting companies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) at www.annualcredit report.com and make sure the information is accurate. Evaluate your issues. Do you have a short credit history? You may need time to build it up. Is your file “thin” (fewer than four credit accounts)? Thicken it up (See No. 2). Are you using too much of your available credit? Pay down what you can on existing accounts to keep your credit utilization at 30 percent or less. Have you missed payments? Use calendar reminders or other tech solutions to help you stay on time. Getting in

the habit of pulling your credit report one every 12 months is a good credit management habit.

Unfortunately, mortgage lenders are not able to use this model and rely on more conventional credit scoring models. Regardless of the model, there are some common things you as a consumer can do to make it easier to get your next loan.

F

(BPT) - In today’s world, lenders use many different types of credit scoring models. There are virtually hundreds of different models out there for lenders to choose from. Many lenders continue to use conventional models that don’t provide a score for millions of consumers. That often puts younger borrowers such as millennials at a disadvantage. Millennials are less likely to have long credit histories, and they may only have one or two credit accounts. Because young adults today carry more student loan debt, they are understandably reluctant to assume more debt. While that’s a prudent approach on the part of millennials, it can cause their score to be lower than those with deeper credit histories. Many lenders are adopting new tools that address this problem. One example is VantageScore 4.0, which scores approximately 40 million more consumers than other conventional models.

(BPT) - If you’re considering a home warranty plan, you are probably doing your due diligence - as you should - on how they work, who the different providers are and what to expect from the experience. This article is meant to help you understand home warranty plans, as well as separate fact from fiction.

Go the extra mile to protect your home Myth: “I don’t need a home warranty plan because I have home insurance.” Investing money, time and love into a place to call home can be scary, especially knowing that things don’t always go as planned. You may have homeowners insurance to protect your home against unexpected disasters, but these plans typically don’t cover the issues that come with the everyday wear-and-tear your home systems and appliances go through. The reality is that unexpected breakdowns will happen, and they can be costly.

Trusted connections and expert service Myth: “It’s hard to know who you can trust these days, and I need someone who knows what they’re doing and is looking out for me.” When an appliance or home system needs repairing, choosing the right person to bring into your home can be a daunting task. If American Home Shield is your home warranty provider and you need service, it’s like getting a recommendation from a trusted neighbor (if that neighbor had facilitated over 65 million in-home service requests in their lifetime). Contractors for American Home Shield must meet certain criteria, including background checks, company training and living up to high customer-service standards. “Our network of over 16,000 local professionals are in homes making quality repairs for our customers over four million times a year,” said Dave Quandt, vice president of field services with American Home Shield. “Along with convenient access to qualified service contractors, we also provide our customers with valuable protection

against costly repairs when major home systems and appliances break down.”

Smart budget protection Myth: “I’m already saving for unexpected breakdowns, so I don’t need extra coverage.” Many home warranty plans offer varying coverage levels so that homeowners can choose the level of protection that’s right for their individual home and budget needs. Considering that 58% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, an unexpected repair cost could cause serious financial strain. American Home Shield plans cover components of up to 21 major home systems and appliances that are most likely to break down over time due to normal wear-andtear. “Every homeowner knows that it’s just a matter of time before something breaks down, and no one likes unexpected repair costs. That’s part of what makes home warranties a smart choice for so many consumers,” said Tim Meenan, executive director of the Service Contract Industry Council. “However, coverage varies by plan and provider, so it’s important to do your homework and ask questions.” Meenan says with most plans, customers pay a predetermined service fee to diagnose and repair a covered item, but there can be non-covered expenses such as permit and disposal costs, refrigerant, necessary code upgrades and more. If you’re in the market for a home warranty, keep in mind that some companies offer additional home-related services and discounts to their customers. Those with American Home Shield, the largest provider in the nation, can also take advantage of services such as seasonal HVAC tune-ups and upgrades, lock re-key services (real estate customers only), appliance discounts and more. Home warranties can help save homeowners from many of the headaches that come with owning a home. The plans are growing in popularity as more and more consumers take advantage of the convenient access to professional service contractors, valuable budget protection, and now, the additional services that providers like American Home Shield offer.
