COOLIDGE PALMS Assisted Living Resort Coolidge Palms, a member of the Timeless Life Care managed locations, is working hard to keep Florida seniors out of nursing homes. Coolidge Palms is a charming community designed to help those who need assistance with activities of daily living. Just like family, we provide the help they need to maintain a rich, full life while remaining as independent as possible. Our single goal is to provide a resort-like environment, filled with beauty, security and loving care. We treat each of our residents as individuals who are entitled to

respect, time and attention. We offer an exclusive and secured environment tailored to each individual, with amenities such as a botanical garden with exterior seating, spa-like restrooms, grand piano lobby, library fully equipped with a resident computer and billiard pool room. Coolidge Palms has exceeded expectations in fulfilling an ever growing need to keep seniors out of nursing homes by providing high levels of assistance with activities of daily life in a beautiful home-like environment. While most assisted living

facilities have a policy requiring residents to be independent in their activities of daily living, Coolidge Palms accepts residents who are low functioning and requiring maximum assistance with activities of daily living. Activities of daily living include: bathing, dressing, grooming, ambulation, continence, eating, as well as dementia. Coolidge Palms is equipped with the most state-of-the-art equipment and systems. The kitchen is designed, built and equipped to include the latest industrial grade convection ovens, steam tables, heating lamps, ice making machines and more. The facility has a 24-hour

emergency response system with nurse call devices located at each bed and in each bathroom. The building has an integrated fire protection system to include fire sprinklers and early warning features, monitored 24 hours each day by a central monitoring station. The individual rooms are completely furnished, including television and telephone. The bathrooms are all substantially in compliance with ADA and feature the latest in design for “roll-in” showers. At Coolidge Palms, it doesn’t take long for you to feel like you are at a resort. Our residents are surrounded by those who truly care. Living here becomes so

much more than simply getting help with a few daily activities. It’s about receiving that person-

money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed.

How Do Leaks Happen? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be

Water Leaks: Damage Happens Quickly It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority Restoration can find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest, state-of-the-art technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition. Working Directly with Your Insurance Company To save the home and business owner time and

A Hollywood Smile Now Affordable At Brighten Dental Care When it comes to dental health, Dr. Chander Gupta and his staff are always ready to answer any question. DANIA BEACH - A visit to Brighten Dental Care can be downright relaxing. And the reward is a beautiful smile. Brighten Dental Care is a multispecialty office, including Endodontist Root Canal Specialist, Periodontist (gum surgery specialist) and Orthodontist, where a patient can take care of all his or her dental needs. “Our goal is to provide each patient with the very best possible treatment in a way that fits his or her individual needs, expectations, and budget,” Dr. Gupta says. “We will inform a patient of what we think is the best course of treatment.” Dr. Gupta and his friendly staff Kiran

PATIENTS PRAISE DR. GUPTA AND STAFF Dr. Gupta’s patients come from as far away as Port St. Lucie, Key West, and even New York. They praise him for both his skills and his compassion. “Brighten Dental Care gave me back my beautiful smile and made my fear of the dentist go away. Everyone there made me feel relaxed and comfortable.” – Megan Nathrgs

“Excellent overall service. I was treated with utmost care, and everyone was extremely friendly. Thank you!” – Heather Stluble “Looks great, no pain” – Amanda Archer Dudek

“Normally I am very scared of the dentist. Hence, I had not been to one in 10 years. But Dr. Gupta was very calming. He assured me that I would not be in pain, and he was right.” – Robyn Almodonai

(Office Manager) Brittney (Patient Coordinator, Elsa (Dental Hygienist), and Marilyn (Senior Dental Assistant) go out of their way to make patients feel at home and their visits enjoyable. Snap-On Smile WHY Snap-On Smile? No shots. No drilling. No adhesives. You can even eat while wearing the Snap-On Smile® appliance. Patients looking for a noninvasive, reversible, affordable approach to restorative and cosmetic dentistry are excellent candidates for Snap-On Smile. It’s an easy, quick and affordable solution for patients who want to feel better, look better, and function better. Patients using Snap-On Smile report an immediate boost to confidence and self esteem. Most are impressed with the natural look and feel of Snap-On Smile and are grateful for the brief time investment - about two weeks - to achieve such life changing results. This revolutionary appliance is the ideal solution for solving a wide variety of short- and long-term clinical challenges, as it serves as both a non-invasive restorative option as well as a diagnostic appliance. Applications include using Snap-On Smile as aesthetic provisionals for implant restorations, as cosmetic removable partial dentures, and even as a long-term smile Laser Dentistry Many people, both adults and children, dread going to the dentist because they fear the Novocain and drilling that have long been the standard treatment for cavities and other tooth repairs. Now, laser dentistry can eliminate the need for both of them. “The laser can cut teeth and gums, fix cavities, do gum and bone surgery,” Dr. Gupta says. Because there is no drilling necessary, the annoying and sometimes frightening sound of the drill is also eliminated. “The dental laser uses water to cut, not the heat of the laser,” Dr. Gupta explains. “It

checks bleeding immediately, making it easy for the doctor to see exactly what he is doing, and it instantly kills any germs it touches, which helps to prevent the possibility of infection. The motto for the laser is, “no shot, no pain, no drilling, no kidding!’ and it’s certainly true.” Electronic Injection, Nitrous Oxide, & Oral Sedation For the times when an injection for anesthesia is necessary, the Midwest Electronic Injection machine makes the process easier and virtually pain-free. The device electronically measures the amount of pressure in tissues so when the liquid anesthesia enters, it is precisely the right amount.” Anxious patients can benefit from nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and a single oral dose of sedation medication before any injection. “Many fearful patients prefer this type of anesthesia,” Dr. Gupta says. Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain Syndrome Another piece of equipment treats TMJ pain syndrome. The removable retainer type device creates space and flexibility in the jaw, allowing more blood to flow and causing pain to lessen. “TMJ can be a debilitating disorder,” Dr. Gupta says. “With this device, we can help the patient get back to normal.” Professional Whitening Professional whitening can be achieved in two ways: bleaching at home, or with an in-office procedure. With at-home bleaching, the dental professional creates a custom-fitted tray molded to the patient’s teeth. A spacer material coating the tray allows exactly the right amount of bleach into the tray, a process that eliminates overflow or waste. The patient uses the trays at home according to instructions given by the dentist. When bleaching is performed in the office, the dental professional can

carefully control the bleaching material. Some of the brand name bleaching systems being used at Brighten Dental Care are Zoom, Sapphire, and the most powerful, Deep Bleaching System K O R whitening. Gone are the days when straightening crooked teeth required unsightly metal bands, brackets, and wires. Instead, Dr. Gupta is certified in the use of Invisalign, braces that are virtually invisible. Implementing the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, the lab creates a series of precisely customized invisible aligners. Now you can have a beautiful smile with invisible braces within six months to a year, without a metal mouth. The invisible braces are a set of aligners which you change every two weeks. Apart from teens, adults are perfect candidates for invisible braces. No messy and awkward metal brackets and wires, less frequent visits, usually 6 to 8 weeks and Brush and floss as usual. Dental Implants Implants are a wonderful alternative to dentures or bridges. They can also be an adjunct to make dentures more comfortable. Once they are put in, they are as strong as real teeth, and can look just as attractive. “You can replace just a single tooth, or all missing teeth with dental implants,” Dr. Gupta says. Veneer Smile Make-Over If teeth have permanent stains or are uneven, broken, misshapen, or have noticeable gaps, laminates or veneers may be the best way to create a beautiful smile. Dr. Gupta uses an amazing product called Lumineer by Denmat.. These thin porcelain laminates bond to the front of the teeth to create a nearly perfect surface. The procedure is permanent and carries a three- to five-year warranty, although many veneers have been shown to last 15 years or longer. A Perfect Smile For Every Budget With interest free or low interest payment plans from Care-Credit and Chase Health Advance, you can have the quality dentistry now and pay it later in small monthly payments (subject to credit approval). So no more excuses, you can have the extraordinary smile you always wanted without any fear of pain or Pesos.

Rosalyn Leventhal cheers for Miami Heat’s LeBron James By Lisa Overing - Aventura Digest

At first glance, it might not seem like LeBron James, superstar power forward of our NBA champion Miami Heat, and Rosalyn Leventhal, arguably one of the Heat’s oldest and most endearing fans, have a lot in common. However, the similarities are just uncanny. For starters, he’s black. She’s white. James is a little over 6’9”. Ms. Rosalyn is a little over 96. He’s from Akron. She’s from Cleveland. Before his controversial move to Miami, James played for the Cleveland

Heat trailed in each game and didn’t rally to the lead until the third or fourth period. “I yell at the TV, ‘Get going. What’s the matter, you bums!’” While fully acknowledging the contributions of teammates Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, James is her favorite. After all, they’ve almost been neighbors now. Twice. “They’re wonderful triplets! I like all three of them,” Ms. Rosalyn says of the Heat’s Towering Three, Bosh, Wade, and James. Her mind remains active playing canasta and scrabble. Ms. Rosalyn also enjoys reading the many books available in Vi’s library and the sports page of the newspaper every day. In her younger days, she played golf. Ms. Rosalyn is over the moon that her team won the championship and attended the party at Vi to celebrate their victory. She met several other women at the party who, unbeknownst to her, were also fans and looks forward to watching next season’s games with her new friends. And, Ms. Rosalyn would love for someone to get her a Heat t—shirt to show her team spirit. “If they want to send me a shirt, I’ll pay for it,” she says. “But I don’t need to have a jersey to know I’m a fan.”

alized care within a very special neighborhood filled with very special people. As people experience Coolidge Palms for the first time, we often hear how comfortable they immediately feel. Of course, one of the main reasons for that feeling is our residents themself. They are quick to reach out to new neighbors and friends. Another reason for this unsurpassed level of comfort is our outstanding staff. At Coolidge Palms, you will be served by an exceptionally dedicated and caring professional staff who genuinely loves what they do, and it shows! The services rendered well surpass the requirements set by law. Timeless Life Care Owner, Greg Anderson commented, “this is a 24 hour 7 day per week schedule, staffed with certified nurse assistants (CNA). Our resident care coordinators have a minimum of a bachelor degree, which will assist with keeping medications in order, follow through with doctors and other health care professionals, including blood work and x-rays. We help to complete any medical testing and get the results back to the doctor and coordinate the follow-up visit.” Variety is the spice of life, and variety is what we offer. Our activities and social program is designed to blend the different interests of all our residents and develop

camaraderie between our residents, families and staff. Caring for the special needs of dementia call for an extraordinary balance of professionalism and sensitivity. With this in mind, Coolidge Palms’ memory care provides residents a home-like atmosphere of warmth, acceptance and understanding. We provide care for residents with dementia, and other related diseases, such as Parkinson’s, post-stroke and others. A full schedule of events includes crafts, games, shopping trips, barber and beauty shop visits, and other regular activities, on campus and off. We pamper our residents with therapy sessions, with the use of hot cloths, hand and facial massages. Don’t forget to ask about our “Spa Day” with a licensed massage therapist and our “Walking Club”. There is weekly entertainment, picnics in the park, Saturday barbecues at Coolidge Palms with family and outside friends invited, and regularly scheduled services with neighborhood religious leaders. Being in our eleventh year of operations, Timeless Life Care locations are always nearly at capacity. This success has been due to the basic principle of servicing and pampering our residents. Our staff-to-resident ratio exceeds any other facility of its type. Shared room rates starts at $1,495.00 per month, and includes all amenities. Private suites start at $1,995.00 per month. “Having funds is always a

causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. Is Mold Making Your Home Toxic? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. What Is Mold? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. A Job for Professionals Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. Goodbye, Mold Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such

as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1st PRIORITY RESTORATION: THE PLACE TO CALL 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. - It’s staggering to think that each year an estimated 5-7 million companion animals find their way into the care of animal shelters across the United States. Despite the best efforts of thousands of shelter workers, keeping up with the care of abandoned animals is a daunting task for even the most well-funded rescue organizations. While you may not be able to donate tons of money or time, supporting animal shelters with small contributions can make a huge difference. Here are some simple ways you can help. 1. Lend Your Expertise Shelters often have limited funds to hire individuals capable of setting up websites, writing articles for newsletters, taking pictures of available pets, landscaping the grounds or providing legal advice. Consider your skill set and how you could be a valuable resource for your local shelter. 2. Get Social Shelter animals come from diverse backgrounds, and socializing them can be key in making them more attractive candidates for adoption. Animal rescue organizations often need volunteers willing to dedicate a little time to playing with a cat or teaching a dog to sit. 3. Foster a Pet Since overcrowding in animal shelters is a constant challenge, many rescue organizations look for foster homes that may help socialize and prepare certain pets for adoption. Contact your local shelter and see if you qualify. 4. Turn Your Trash into Treasure Animal shelters go through lots of food bowls and towels each year. While your old blankets and dinnerware might seem ready for a trip to the dump, they could be put to good

City News Stake your claim as grilling guru with America’s classic:

THE CHEESEBURGER

(ARA) - As Americans fire up their grills and the smell of charcoal pervades the blistering summer air, cheeseburgers claim the spot as the paramount menu item from coast to coast. Since the cheeseburger’s epic debut in the 1930s, the summertime staple has earned its rightful spot as the unequivocally American classic. Deemed the quintessential comfort food, 55 percent of Americans would even forgo French fries to top their burger with cheese. Despite the laundry list of toppings, one ingredient reigns supreme: can you “say cheese?” “Americans have a love affair with the cheeseburger, and Sargento Natural Sliced Cheeses transform ordinary burgers into a savory sizzling experience,”

notes Stephanie Meyer, core marketing manager at Sargento. “The authentic flavor and texture of natural, never processed cheese easily amps up any juicy cookout creation.” As the most preferred topping for a burger, cheese is simply irreplaceable. A burger without cheese is like a sundae without the hot fudge or peanut butter without the jelly. In fact, more than three in four Americans can’t imagine eating a burger without it. Rising to the top of cheeseburger aficionados’ lists are Cheddar, Swiss and Pepper Jack, all offered by Sargento. Looking to raise the bar on your juicy cheeseburger creations? Try the mouthwatering “Drill Sargento Burger” recipe below from Chicago’s iconic burger joint, Butcher & the Burger.

Drill Sargento Burger Prep Time: 10 minutes • Cook Time: 15 minutes • Serves: 1 Ingredients:

• 1 slice Sargento Deli Style Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese • 1 slice Sargento Deli Style Sliced Baby Swiss Cheese • 1 slice (1/4-inch thick) ripe beefsteak or heirloom tomato • 1 split top bun • 2 thick slices bacon, cut in half • 1 heaping tablespoon sauteed onions • Dijon mustard

Directions: Mix beef with onion, parsley, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce and garlic. Shape into pattie. Brush lightly with olive oil and grill until desired doneness. Meanwhile, toast bun and spread mustard on bottom half. Warm onion and cook bacon. Put burger on bottom half of bun, top with onions and Swiss. Melt cheese under a broiler. Top with tomato slice, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. Top with bacon and Sharp Cheddar. Melt cheese under a broiler, top with bun.

Aventura Confidential You can go home. Again. By Lisa Overing Aventura Digest

Rediscovery is a pleasure enjoyed at least twice. There’s the relief of rediscovering the romance and excitement in a stagnant marriage and the joy of rediscovering a tried and true, go-to vacation spot, mental snapshots of warm memories embedded in your head, forever. In my case, I’ve rediscovered my favorite hometown, Aventura, after a long absence. It’s a welcome blessing, certainly one that I never expected. The adage, “You can’t go home again” simply isn’t true, and I’m tickled pink to be back. In January, I relocated part-time to Aventura after nearly four years and retrieved my property from my ex-husband, a wonderful waterfront condo in Hidden Bay. But what I got was more than real estate. As a journalist, I got some gigs back after returning to where I began my writing career. As a human being, I reclaimed my lifestyle, my friends, and the culture of Aventura. I remember when I first moved to Aventura in 1998. After a quick but exhaustive search with my realtor whisking me from South Beach to Weston and Plantation to Pompano, the majestic palm trees on Williams Island Boulevard welcomed me. The palms beckoned me to leave the traf-

fic on Biscayne to explore a narrow strip of land between the congestion of US1 and the Intracoastal, a little paradise called Aventura. I turned the corner, saw the boats on Little Maule Lake, and the rest is history. I rented in Lincoln Point and two years later, I bought a condo in the last stages of construction, around the block, in breathtaking Hidden Bay. By then I’d had the chance to carefully explore upscale areas from Key Biscayne to Jupiter. But I still liked the proximity of Aventura to both Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach and the convenience of having everything I needed within walking distance in a densely populated three mile grid. Entranced with the beauty of Aventura and a motley crew of neighbors, I realized we were united not by nationality, not by religion, but by socio-economic status and a shared love of the luxury waterfront lifestyle. That was 15 years ago. Today, my new husband and stepson are as enamored with Aventura as I am, and I get to see everything through their eyes as they’re new to South Florida. It’s amazing to hear them describe greater Aventura and they “get” what living here is all about. “Everything is perfect,” they say. “All the grass is manicured, the landscaping is luscious. Everything you need is convenient, from great restaurants, groceries, and a truly world

class mall. There’s no crime and no riffraff, and when you spot someone out of place, the police are usually escorting them out of town. There’s an art center across the canal next to a school. The weather and condo amenities are incredible and our dogs are welcome nearly everywhere.” Indeed, it’s quite enjoyable to sit on the balcony and watch the magnificent parade of megayachts on any given Sunday with a cool ocean breeze, even in the middle of summer. During the daytime, the warm Atlantic sun gently balms your skin until the night, which almost requires a sweater on the balcony. It’s wonderfully pleasant, listening to the gentle waves swishing back and forth as the night wind gently blows your hair. Sometimes you’ll spot a magnificent dolphin prancing through the canal, coming up for air before another effortless porpoise splash downward, and up again, a few yards later. The rhythmic repetition of their swim is entrancing under the moonlight. For a treat, we’ll hit Houston’s for a magnificent burger after working up an appetite from either a walk around Turnberry Circle or a day on Hollywood Beach, ritually followed by a dip in the pool and Jacuzzi. Gulfstream Village is my fave new hangout. We stop for a stogie at Royal Cigars, usually followed by pizza at American Pie, chocolate malts at Häagen-Dazs, and lazily browse Crate and Barrel. We’re impressed with Brio’s tantalizing menu and enjoy the amusing troubadour of Karaoke singers at Gamaroff’s. There’s so much to explore here, in Aventura. There’s so much to rediscover when you’re content….being at home. About Lisa Overing: As long as there’s salt, sweat, sea, or swamp involved, journalist Lisa Overing feels buoyant. From a long line of working sailors, Lisa has always gravitated toward a coastline and splits her time between her waterfront residences in Coastal Mississippi and South Florida, where she alternately watches her bayou’s resident alligator or the Intracoastal’s luxurious megayachts. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Lisa pens for yachting and luxury lifestyle magazines and wrote under the byline Lisa Hoogerwerf Knapp from 1986-2011. Contact her at LisaOvering@aol.com.

Four common photography mistakes to avoid

(ARA) - If your photos seem too bright, cluttered or ordinary, you can take simple steps to avoid these and other common photography mistakes. “Photographers know it takes a good eye, practice and patience to make the most out of every moment,” says Bill Robbins, an award-winning advertising photographer, commercial film director and current program chair of professional photography at Brooks Institute, a leading provider of higher education for film, graphic design, and photography. “Whether you’re a professional or amateur photographer, it’s also about trying new techniques and experimenting with everything from lighting to composition.” Robbins offers these tips for overcoming four common photography errors and turning any good photo into a great photo: • No focal point. Ask yourself this simple question before you snap a picture: What are you taking a photo of and why?

Your answer will ensure you capture the right elements for the viewer to easily understand the photograph’s subject and purpose. Less is usually more when it comes to photo composition. For example, if you’re taking a photo of a beautiful landscape, what’s the main focal point - is it the rock formation, sunset or covered bridge? You may need to move in closer to fill the frame with your subject and eliminate any distractions in the background or foreground. In addition, consider turning around to see if there’s a more interesting image or focal point in that direction. • Too much or too little light. Getting the right exposure - the amount of light that passes through your camera lens - is critical to capturing the sharpest photos. If you’re shooting in a dimly lit space or standing too far away from your subject, your photo may be underexposed or appear too dark. Quick fixes: Add extra light if you’re indoors, move closer to your

subject, or manually adjust your camera’s shutter speed to be slower or the aperture to a wider lens opening, thus allowing in more light. When there’s too much natural or indoor light, your photos may look washed out or have unwanted shadows. Consider using a flash to even out the lighting, moving the subject (or yourself ) out of the brighter light, or waiting for a time of day when the lighting is better. For outdoor pictures, overcast days work well. When you get in the habit of focusing on the light, you’ll find the best places and times to use light to your advantage. • Centered subject. The best photos may not be perfectly centered in your frame. When eyeing any photo opportunity, consider the tried-and-true “rule of thirds.” As you’re framing your photo, imagine two vertical and two horizontal lines spaced evenly, creating a grid of nine rectangular boxes. Try placing the main subject near the points along these lines or where the lines intersect. This creates more visual interest than centering the subject. In a landscape shot, for example, it prevents the horizon from appearing to divide the picture in half. Instead, the horizon might appear in the lower third of the photo. You can also consider framing the image from a different position rather than always shooting at eye level. With digital cameras, it’s easy to experiment and be creative with your composition. • Red-eye. This is one of the most common - and annoying - issues with photos. Red-eye is caused by the flash reflecting off the person’s retina, in which blood vessels cause the red glow. The easiest solution is to turn off the flash. You can also activate the red-eye reduction feature on many digital cameras, or, if a flash is necessary, ask the subject to avoid looking directly into the camera lens.

(ARA) - When it comes time to take a vacation, don’t forget to invite your family pet along for the ride. There are also a few things you can do to make sure your pet enjoys your vacation as much as the family. • It’s important to eat well, even on the road. It’s designed to allow pets to pant and drink through soft, yet durable mesh.

How massage therapy can give you an active, healthy summer (ARA) - For many people, summer means fun in the sun that includes outdoor activities like running, hiking, biking and team sports. But an active lifestyle can take a toll on the body and bring about aches and pains from muscles and joints that haven’t been utilized during the fall and winter. “There are a number of ways to keep your body healthy during the summer. However, one often overlooked but beneficial component for a healthy lifestyle is massage therapy,” says Amy Wiltgen, massage therapy instructor at Everest College - Merrionette Park. “Even the simplest relaxation massages will decrease stress and improve circulation, reduce fatigue, and help keep your muscles, bones and connective tissue in good working condition.”

Wiltgen offers some tips for choosing a massage therapist this summer and maximizing the experience: Find a professional. The first step is to find professional therapists who are licensed and insured, and have a certificate of professional training in their specialty or procedure. “Perhaps most helpful is to get a personal recommendation from a friend or look for testimonials or reviews on websites,” says Wiltgen. “Also look for academic credentials, such as a diploma from an accredited program.” Ask questions and describe health issues. When you call for an appointment, have questions ready to get a good sense of your compatibility with and the professionalism and personality of the therapist. Communicate. Upon arriving at the appointment, make sure

to let the therapist know your health history and any preferences for depth of pressure, room temperature, choices in music and allergies to oils or lotions. Don’t be afraid to speak up to ask the therapist to make any adjustments during the massage. Relax. It’s important to relax. Let your mind and body go to enjoy all the benefits of the massage. “Breathing normally helps facilitate relaxation,” says Wiltgen. “People often stop or limit their breathing when they feel anxious or a sensitive area is massaged.” Avoid pain. A common

misconception is that the massage has to hurt to feel good. “Whether it’s a professional giving a massage, or a friend or family member, communicate any discomfort immediately,” says Wiltgen. Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink extra water before and after the massage to help flush toxins from the body and make sure muscles are properly hydrated. “Having a massage on a regular basis can be a powerful ally in your health care regimen, and will help keep you at your optimal best all summer long,” adds Wiltgen.

Will Dairy Boost Your Weight-Loss Resolution?

(NewsUSA) - If weight loss and dieting are on your agenda, an unlikely food group may be the help you need. Consuming dairy products as part of your daily diet can help keep weight down, according to several studies. Findings in the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that higher-protein, high-dairy diets shaved off belly fat and increased lean muscle. “One hundred percent of the weight lost in the higher-protein, high-dairy group was fat. And the participants gained muscle mass, which is a major change in body composition,” says Andrea Josse, lead

author of the study and a graduate student in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. In addition, a Harvard study, which suggests that the food quality is more important than its calorie count, found that eating specific high-quality foods was linked with less weight gain over time. Its data showed that the more daily servings people ate of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and yogurt, the less weight they gained. In fact, the research found that each extra daily serving of yogurt prevented 0.82 of a pound of weight gain. The Nutrition and Metabolism journal reported a study in which participants who consumed three or more servings of dairy a day after weight loss were able to eat more calories without gaining weight than those who didn’t consume dairy. Milk is nutritionally unique in that it is a

great source of nine essential nutrients: calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, riboflavin and niacin. It provides three of the five “nutrients of concern” that children do not get enough of: calcium, magnesium and potassium. By combining a high intake of nutrientrich dairy with regular physical activity, it won’t even feel like you’re trying to lose weight. “However, as with any diet, you must be realistic. Results take time, so first commit to getting through this month to establish a real routine,” says Alyssa Greenstein, a registered dietitian with the Dairy Council of Florida. According to a National Health and Nutrition survey, 86 percent of women and 76 percent of men fail to meet the recommended dairy intake of three servings each day. That means the majority of Americans don’t have satisfactory levels of essential nutrients like potassium, zinc, calcium and folate. These levels plummet when dieters attempt to trim calories by purging dairy.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

LEO

SAGITTARIUS

(March 21 - April 19) As you begin July, you’ve got to hurry. Mercury is nipping at your heels and will go retrograde on July 14 to August 8. Because Mercury is the planet of communication and transportation, this is not exactly the news any of us were hoping to hear, as Mercury’s talents in communications are precisely the ones we require to keep things humming along smoothly.

(July 23- August 22) The start to July brings an important ending to a key project, and you seem to have to get it out the door within four days of either side of the full moon in Capricorn (12 degrees). There may be tension, however, as Uranus will not be supportive of this full moon, and something about this assignment may go off the rails. Keep watching all the details to be sure facts stated are accurate.

TAURUS

VIRGO

(April 20- May 20) As you begin the month, the full moon will light your house of foreign people and places, and because full moons end things, it looks like you may be returning home from a wonderful trip to a foreign country. This full moon will fall in fellow earth sign Capricorn (12 degrees), and you will notice its influence for plus or minus four days. This full moon will conjoin Pluto, so you can, if you like, develop work from the city you visited. There seems to be money to be made, so even if you travel for fun, see if you can combine a little business too.

(August 23 - September 22) When it comes to career, you are holding all aces, dear Virgo. Venus is now moving at a powerful, strong direct speed, and is orbiting very close to Jupiter, giver of gifts and luck. Jupiter will take the lead in helping you get professional opportunities from several unexpected quarters in months ahead.

(November 22 - December 21) Lots of news will be swirling around you in July, and the busy nature of the month will provide you with enough variety to keep you motivated and alert. As the month begins there’s tension due to a feisty full moon, but don’t assume this is how the whole month will go. Keep generating that boundless, contagious optimism that everyone knows and loves about you, dear Sagittarius, because once you get to July’s third week, the mood of the month will turn quite dramatically in your favor.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) This could be a turning point month on several levels. First, it seems your finances are being rearranged and possibly renegotiated. You may not know where you stand until the end of July, or August, but that is OK for now. Go with the flow, and have faith you will be steering things in the right direction.

CANCER

(September 23 - October 22) As you begin the month, the full moon will appear. Instantly it will seem as though almost everyone, in all parts of your life, including those at home and at the office, will need your attention, with your home or family members needing you the most. You may feel a little like you were thrust into the middle of a three-ring circus, charged with the mission of pulling several diverse areas of your life into a unified whole, but doing so will not be easy.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Your time is coming to go on stage and shine, but your curtain won’t rise until August. Be glad you have time to get ready, for August could well become a landmark month for you when everything changes for the better. When opportunities start to arrive, they will come with fanfare and fireworks, so although this year has had a very slow start for you, finally you will start to see the progress you have worked so hard for.

(December 22 - January 19) It’s time to think about your own needs, dear Capricorn. The full moon in your sign, Capricorn (12 degrees), will bring a matter to fullness that is dearly important to you. When a full moon occurs in your own sign, it’s hard for me to see what resides in your heart. You would instantly know what it is - and it is coming to culmination now.

The Adrienne Arsht Center announces the arrival of the renowned hit “The Donkey Show,” a spectacular phenomenon that blends a crazy circus of disco music hits, go-go dancers, roller skaters, feathered divas and a full active bar, resulting in the most ultimate party extravaganza. The show, inspired by William Shakespeare’s classic comedy, “ A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” opens on July 13 through August 12, 2012, for a limited engagement on the Ziff Ballet Opera House stage, which will be transformed into a mirror ball dance floor for guests to live their own fabulous disco fantasy. “The Donkey Club” will take Miami by storm as the cities dreamiest pop-up club, enchanted by a light sprinkling of Shakespearean magic. Come party to all the 70s disco hits you remember. If you love the night life, The Donkey Show will be your midsummer nights dream come true with a cast of twenty best dancers and actors. Performances are Wednesday, through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets start at $45 at the box office located at 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Must be 18 to enter. For a wild Nightclub Experience and information call 305-949-6722.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) At the start of the month, July 3 brings a full moon that will bring jarring events to many, but you seem to be a bystander to others’ crises. This full moon will occur in your twelfth house, ruling confinement and rest, but it also rules hospitals. I should raise the possibility that you may hear that a relative or friend needs medical attention, or that you will check yourself into a facility instead.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) The month starts off on an emotional note. The full moon, in Capricorn, 12 degrees, will receive a barrage of difficult vibrations from other planets, including Saturn and Uranus. You seem better situated than most, because Capricorn is a sign that blends easily with yours. Still, there will be tension in the air, and it will center squarely on money.

Health Experts say the scalp is the foundation for strong, beautiful hair (ARA) - Whether hair is wavy or straight, dry or fine, one thing most women have in common is the desire for strong, beautiful hair. In fact, 80 percent of women say they feel more confident when they have a good hair day, according to a recent survey from KRC Research. What many women may not know, however, is that they’ve been treating the wrong end of their hair instead of focusing on the source - the scalp. Research conducted on behalf of Unilever suggests that 99 percent of hair’s natural strength and beauty comes from the scalp, and a well-nourished scalp is the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. Top celebrity hair and skin experts from the Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy team discuss the importance of caring for the scalp and what it takes to get gorgeous hair. Feed scalp, feed beauty: Nationally renowned dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco advises

her clients to nourish the scalp. “It is essential to give our scalp as much TLC as we give to our skin because after all, scalp is skin,” she says. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, also have a beneficial effect on skin and scalp. Fusco also suggests using nourishing shampoos and conditioners such as new Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy which restore the scalp’s natural moisture balance. The line is infused with Nutrium 10, a rich blend of vitamins and nutrients including vitamins B5, C and E designed to nourish the scalp and hair deeply. Drink up: There’s a new reason to refill your water bottle. Along with a healthy diet and reducing stress, staying hydrated can impact the overall health of your skin (and scalp) and also plays a part in keeping hair looking beautiful. “I recommend drinking at least two liters of water daily to keep skin hydrated,” says Dr. Fusco. Not

only does hydration help with skin health but it can also help reduce frizz. Nourish the foundation: Celebrity stylist Oscar James cautions against sacrificing scalp nourishment for style. “African American women tend to have dryer scalps and many use chemical treatments and relaxers that can dry out the scalp,” says James. “That’s why I like the Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Ultra Shea line because it includes shampoo, conditioner, oil and balm that work together to quench dryness and lock in moisture for longlasting nourishment.” Take a break: Jen Atkin, stylist to some of Hollywood’s leading ladies, advises giving your hair a break from heat styling and lots of products to help improve overall scalp and hair

health. “A great cut that works with your hair’s natural texture makes a huge difference and can reduce styling time,” she says. Letting hair dry naturally can save time and is easier on your strands.

“It’s still in my heart to teach,” she adds, “but I’d rather teach people how to stay healthy.” The nursing profession can offer many qualities that jobseekers and career-changers find attractive, such as job stability, flexibility and career advancement opportunities. Additionally, nursing is a wellrespected field and has been named the most trusted profession for 11 of the last 12 years, according to the annual Gallup Poll survey. “Many job-seekers and career-changers are looking for a profession that is not only ripe with opportunity but also a personally rewarding livelihood,” says Michelle Mercurio, national manager of career services at Chamberlain College of Nursing. “Although

Need A Career Change?

NURSING NEEDS YOU (ARA) - Registered nursing already the largest health care occupation with 2.7 million jobs - is on a massive growth trajectory. Employment of registered nurses (RNs) is expected to increase by 26 percent by 2020 and nursing was recently ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Jobs” list for 2012. Stephanie Augustin, 27, of Miramar, Fla., can attest to the nursing profession’s appeal. After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s

degree in reading education, Augustin worked as a fifth-grade science teacher. But various factors made her question her job stability as a new teacher, including her school’s budget cuts and new salary regulations. Deciding to seek a new career opportunity, Augustin left her position as an elementary teacher to pursue nursing, enrolling in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program at Chamberlain College of Nursing. As a fulltime student, Augustin will take

three years to complete the program, with flexible online classes, which allow her to work as a tutor while enrolled in school. “I’m confident in my decision to transition to a more in-demand career,” says Augustin. “Nursing provides an opportunity for me to renew each patient’s sense of hope and trust in the health care process, allowing me to feel better as an individual by lending a helping hand during my patient’s time of need.

nursing can be challenging, nurses have the opportunity to really make a positive impact in a patient’s life, allowing the nurses to give personally and feel satisfied at the end of the day - knowing they made a difference.” Several different academic paths can lead to a nursing career, but many employers prefer to hire nurses who have a BSN degree rather than an associate degree in nursing. Research shows that more positive patient outcomes occur when nurses are prepared at the baccalaureate level. One group of researchers found that every 10 percent increase in the proportion of BSN nurses on the hospital staff was associated with a 4 percent decrease in the risk of death. Recognizing the increased need for more highly educated nurses, many nursing schools now offer accelerated BSN degree programs. Chamberlain, for example, enables students like Augustin to earn their BSN degree in as few as three years of year-round study, allowing them to enter the workforce sooner than their peers. In addition, students can earn advanced degrees, including a master of science in nursing with a specialization in the in-demand areas of nursing education, executive leadership or the high-tech discipline of nursing informatics. The high level of fulfillment provided by the nursing profession, combined with job stability, flexibility and employment and advancement opportunities, make it a rewarding lifelong career.

(ARA) - Walking on the beach, frolicking in the surf, participating in sports, strolling through a theme park while on vacation - your feet will carry you through a lot of fun this summer. But can paying attention to them help you avoid the most common form of cancer in America? Possibly, experts say. Each year, more than 1 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Yet only 32 percent of Americans use sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun’s damaging rays, NCI says in its Cancer Trends Progress Report. Even when sunscreen is applied, the feet are often neglected. “While skin cancers typically appear on areas of sun-exposed skin like the face, arms and hands, they can also occur on areas that get much less sun, such as the feet,” says Dr. Joseph Caporusso, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “With flip-flops and sandals being common summer foot attire, more Americans than ever are exposing their feet to the sun’s potential harmful rays.” Sun exposure, however, isn’t the whole story when it comes to skin cancers on the feet. More often, skin cancers of the feet can be linked to exposure to viruses or chemicals, chronic inflammation or irritation, or even inherited traits, according to APMA.

“Unfortunately, the skin on our feet is often overlooked during routine medical checkups,” Caporusso notes. “Yet, foot health can be an indicator of overall health. It’s important for everyone to have their feet checked regularly by today’s podiatrist for any signs or symptoms of skin cancer.” APMA offers a few tips for protecting your feet this summer: • Apply the same broadspectrum sunscreen you use on the rest of your body to your feet, including the tops, on and between the toes, and even the soles of your feet. Reapply every two hours when you’re out in the sun and more frequently if you spend a lot of time in and out of the water. • Conduct regular self exams of your feet. Look for signs of problems, such as cracking or sores. Keep in mind that freckles and moles on the soles of the feet are very unusual, and may be a sign you should see a podiatrist. • Be aware of the warning signs for malignant melanoma - the most deadly type of skin cancer. This type of cancer may occur on the skin of the feet and on occasion, beneath a toenail. Learn the ABCDEs of melanoma: Asymmetrical lesions, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving characteristics of any of the ABCD traits. If you notice a mole, freckle or lesion with any of these characteristics, have your health care provider take a look. • Skin cancer of the feet can easily be mistaken for other, less serious problems. For example squamous cell carcinomas, the second-most-common type of skin cancer, may resemble a plantar wart, fungal infection, eczema, an ulcer or other common dermatological condition. • Skin cancers in the lower legs, ankles and feet may look very different from those that occur in the rest of the body. Podiatrists are uniquely qualified among medical professionals to treat lower extremities, so their knowledge and training can help patients detect both benign and malignant skin tumors early.

BUYING A HOME: Prepare by getting your finances in order (ARA) - For those considering buying a home, the current real estate market presents some unique opportunities. One of the side effects of the economic roller coaster ride of the past few years is that home prices have gone down and more homes have gone on the market. For buyers, that means more choices and better deals. However,

- and healthy - to be able to get the best deal on your purchase. There are a number of steps you can take to get ready to buy a home, and you might need to work on them simultaneously. Consider that you’ll need to start saving, if you haven’t already, but you’ll also need to review your credit score and do what you can to either maintain it or work

off your home for years to come, it’s important to get the best rate possible. Start by checking your credit report. You’re entitled to one free check of your report, from TransUnion and other credit reporting agencies every year. As much as you need to check your report to find out what shape your credit is in, it’s also essential to review it for inaccuracies or fraudulent activity, both of which can have a negative impact on your score. If your credit health needs some work, start taking action i m m e d i a t e l y. Paying bills on time, reducing your overall debt and limiting new credit inquiries can all help to build your credit - but be patient as it can take time for your positive actions to take effect. What You Need to Know About Renters Insurance (NewsUSA) - If you are thinking about renting, there are many questions that might be on your mind, such as whether you’ll have a good landlord, what your neighbors will be like and how you’ll come up with the money for your security deposit. With all this to consider, it can be easy to overlook the obvious -- like renters insurance. “Renters insurance satisfies a real need that many renters don’t even realize they have. For example, a small kitchen fire or an unattended candle can easily cause thousands of dollars in damage,” said Kathy McDonald, senior vice president, Assurant Specialty Property. For instance, according to the National Fire Protection Association’s

latest figures, residential structure fires accounted for $7.1 billion in property damage in 2010 -- an average of nearly $18,500 per fire. If you’re looking to rent a house or apartment, here’s what you need to know about renters insurance: • Renters insurance is affordable and easily fits into your budget, no matter how tight it is. Renters can easily protect their belongings and enjoy peace of mind for as little as $4 a week. • As a renter, you are financially responsible for damage to your unit if it’s a result of negligence -such as fire, smoke or water damage (via plumbing or AC issues, not flooding due to excessive rain). • Many property managers now are requiring renters to have liability coverage. And renters insurance includes a liability component in case a mistake or accident of yours causes damage to a neighboring unit. Liability insurance also

can cover injuries if someone is hurt in your home and needs medical attention. • Some renters insurance policies cover burglary, lost or stolen luggage while you’re traveling and even items taken from your car. • If you move, policies can be transferred to new communities and locations without a lapse in coverage. And for those renters who are worried about making their security deposit, there is some help. Many apartment communities offer residents the option of making a one-time bond premium payment instead of putting down an expensive security deposit, with a program such as SureDeposit. Renters insurance is an easy, affordable way for renters to protect what they own. Replacing your belongings after a fire or other disaster can be a costly burden. Why buy the same TV twice? With the right renters insurance program, you don’t have to.

Global Jewelry Buying House By Suzanne Wallace - Sun Times

- You saw an ad for Global Jewelry Buying House and wanted to learn more before you trusted your jewelry to them. You called and they told you to come to their Buying House at 18677 West Dixie Highway in Aventura, FL. Not knowing what to expect, you brought only a couple of pieces of unwanted jewelry and a silver service, no longer in use. Upon arrival, you were buzzed into the store by their private security officer and were met in the lobby by the Director of Buying, Danny. He took you down a warm and inviting hallway to one of several boutique-like rooms. You were asked if you would like coffee or water and was served your bottled water in a crystal stemmed glass. Danny took out a purchase form, wrote your name and date on the form and after opening up his jewelers light, asked to see what you had brought. He examined your two pieces of jewelry and wrote a value on the form next to a description and then looked at your silver and assessed its value. At that point, you had a decision to make...sell it now or take your copy of the purchase form to show your wife. You decided the price was certainly fair and sold your jewelry for cash. You took your silver service back home to make sure your wife agreed with the sale and showed her the purchase form with the price that was offered. Your wife agreed it was a good price so tomorrow you will take it back, along with the purchase order, and be given the price listed. What’s more, you have decided to take some more jewelry that has been lying in a jewelry box for years and cash it in too. That is a typical experience at the Global Jewelry Buying House. They have been doing business in New York for 30 years and are now beginning their rapid expansion. More Planned For South Florida Three new Buying Houses are in the works in the Aventura area and more planned in the South Florida area. One of the things that make this business unique, other than their boutique look, is that they don’t sell jewelry at their locations; they only buy from the public. Because they are a well-known AVENTURA

International Jewelry Buying House, they have customers world-wide who buy from them. They provide a liquid global market for previously owned jewelry and for that reason; they are able to offer the highest prices to you.
