The Torah speaks of burial not as a technical requirement, but as an act of chesed shel emet—a “true kindness.”
A Jewish Perspective On Burial And Cremation By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil
JEWISHCONNECTION.NEWS • JANUARY 2026 • PAGE 4
I write these words after far too many tears shed together with bereaved families—families placed in painful and often avoidable situations simply because the right conversations did not happen earlier. My hope is that this article helps open those conversations with clarity, compassion, and care. When families face end-of-life decisions, they are often doing so in moments filled with emotion, love, and uncertainty. Judaism approaches these moments with deep sensitivity, offering guidance not to judge or criticize, but to bring dignity, comfort, and peace—to the soul of the departed and to those left behind. Jewish tradition teaches that the human body is a precious gift from G-d. Throughout life, it enables a person to perform mitzvot, express kindness, and bring light into the world. For this reason, Judaism asks that the body be treated with profound respect even after life has ended. Burial is understood as a final act of care—gently returning the body to the earth from which it was formed. It is important to say clearly: this article is not a judgment of past decisions. Rather, it is a loving wake-up call for those who may be unsure, undecided, or simply unaware of the significance of proper Jewish burial. Unfortunately, cremation is becoming increasingly common. My intention here is to shed light on this sensitive topic and to offer a Jewish perspective that can help guide thoughtful, informed decisions. Cremation, which involves the active destruction of the body, stands in contrast to the tenderness and guardianship that Judaism encourages at life’s end. The Torah speaks of burial not as a technical requirement, but as an act of chesed shel emet—a “true kindness.” It is kindness because it is done for someone who can never repay it. Through burial, family and community come together to honor a life lived and to escort the soul forward with dignity, reverence,
and love. This sacred process—often including tahara (ritual purification), prayer, and a simple burial—has brought comfort to Jewish families for thousands of years. It provides continuity and quiet meaning at a time when so much can feel overwhelming. Judaism teaches that death is not an end, but a transition. The soul lives on, and one of our core beliefs is Techiyat HaMeitim, the resurrection of the dead. Choosing burial gently affirms this faith and expresses hope in the enduring bond between body and soul. While G-d’s compassion is limitless, Jewish tradition views cremation as inconsistent with this belief, as it symbolizes finality rather than continuity. For many Jewish families, cremation also carries deep emotional weight because of our collective history. The forced cremation of millions of Jews during the Holocaust left an indelible imprint on the Jewish soul. Even generations later, this memory can make cremation especially painful, evoking times when Jewish dignity was brutally stripped away. Jewish teachings explain that the soul remains connected to the body after death. Burial allows for a gentle, natural separation—bringing peace to the soul and comfort to the living. The familiar rhythms of Jewish mourning—burial, shivah, prayer, and remembrance—help families begin the healing process with structure, support, and community. Even for Jews who lived largely secular lives, choosing a Jewish burial can be a powerful final connection—to family, to heritage, and to timeless values. It is a quiet but profound way of saying: I belong. I am part of this story. Judaism’s preference for burial is not meant to pressure or condemn, but to guide families toward a choice rooted in dignity, compassion, and faith. In moments of loss, Jewish tradition seeks to wrap families in care, reminding us that even in goodbye, there can be meaning, holiness, and peace.
If you are navigating these decisions, please know that you are not alone. Rabbis and community leaders are here to listen, to support, and to help you find a path that feels both loving and true. I encourage you to reach out to your local Chabad or Chevra Kadisha—they will guide you through these challenging decisions with sensitivity and respect. We have lots of information gathered at: www.ChabadChayil.org/LifeToLife - And have a list of affordable burial options available in South Florida at: www.ChabadChayil.org/Cemetery. If there is anything we can ever help with, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at: (305) 770-1919. As Rabbis, we are privileged to share in the most meaningful moments of a family’s life. We rejoice with parents at baby namings and circumcisions, welcome children into preschool, laugh with them at Hebrew School, prepare them for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, support them through teen years and young adulthood, counsel couples before marriage, celebrate life’s milestones—and we cry together when loved ones pass on. May we experience less crying and more celebrating. And may we merit the time when G-d will remove death and sadness from the world entirely. May it happen speedily in our days. Miami-Based Coming-Of-Age Comedy ETHAN BLOOM At The Kravis Center’s Rinker Playhouse
JEWISHCONNECTION.NEWS • JANUARY 2026 • PAGE 10
The Donald M. Ephraim Sun & Stars International Film Festival© (SASIFF), presented by MorseLife, returns for a fourth season next month offering hot, new, award-winning movies from all over the world, kicking off with the delightful and heartfelt coming-of-age comedy ETHAN BLOOM. Director Herschel Faber and screenwriter Maylen Dominguez will attend the glittery Opening Night on Sunday, January 25th, 2026, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33401. As part of the Opening Night activities, SASIFF will officially present the inaugural Donald M. Ephraim/Terri Sriberg Award for Cinematic Excellence to Film Commissioner Michelle Hillery, who heads the Palm Beach County TV & Film Commission. The award is named after the festival’s respected co-founders, who are cultural philanthropists and confirmed film buffs. “Over the last three decades, the local TV & Film Commission has made an impressive cultural and financial contribution by ‘rolling out the red carpet’ to welcome productions to the filmmaker’s paradise known as The Palm Beaches,” says SASIFF Co-founder Donald M. Ephraim. “Thanks to their diligent efforts, we have become the backdrop for countless movies, television shows, commercials, photoshoots, web content and more, generating a positive economic impact of more than $200 Million annually and $4 Billion overall. Following in a tradition once exemplified by Burt Reynolds, Michelle Hillery and her talented team have played a significant role in promoting film and television production in Palm Beach County, and we are very proud to honor them at our Opening Night reception and screening.” “I am deeply honored to receive this inaugural award and grateful to the Sun & Stars International Film Festival for recognizing the work of the Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission. This acknowledgment reflects the collective efforts of our team and community in supporting filmmakers and strengthening our local creative economy,” says Michelle Hillery. “The Sun & Stars International Film Festival plays an important role in showcasing exceptional storytelling while elevating Palm Beach County’s cultural profile, and we are proud to be recognized as part of that mission.” SASIFF’s Opening Night will begin with a cinematic cocktail reception with light bites and beverages in the Cohen Pavilion at 6:30 p.m., followed by the North Palm Beach County premiere screening in the Kravis Center’s Rinker Playhouse one hour later. Tickets are $90 and are available for purchase online at: www.sasiff.org. ETHAN BLOOM This heartfelt Opening Night screening paints a revealing portrait of adolescence, humorously exploring the struggles of an awkward teenager navigating the loss of his mother, his search for faith, and the pressures of his father’s expectations. Starring Hank Greenspan from the CBS hit comedy The Neighborhood and movie/TV actress Rachelle Lefevre (White House Down, Proven Innocent, Boston Legal, Big Wolf on Campus), ETHAN BLOOM captures the perils of first love, religion, and speculation about the afterlife as the 13-year-old title character attempts to evade his Bar Mitzvah by converting to Catholicism. Meanwhile, his widowed dad (played by Joshua Malina from The West Wing) has engaged curvaceous redheaded

Talk about complications. Torn in multiple directions, Ethan communes nightly with his mom and dead dog in the heaven he imagines for them, while struggling by day with his enthusiastic discovery of solo pleasures of the flesh. It all comes together in a spectacularly moving finale when faith, sex, love, and family all coalesce in well-deserved harmony. “ETHAN BLOOM has a good-hearted approach to comedy that probes some of life’s big questions with a tender and allencompassing sense of humor,” says SASIFF Artistic Director Barbara Scharres, the Former Director of Programming at the Gene Siskel Film Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A Warning from History: Antisemitic Mayor Mamdani and the Dismantling of Jewish Protections ZOA - Bryan Rigg, PhD (Yale, Cambridge University), American Military and Holocaust Historian
• Rolled back NYPD guidance limiting protests outside synagogues, protections implemented after Jewish institutions were directly targeted.
January 5, 2026 - Dear Friends, I am writing out of serious concern regarding actions taken by Mayor Zohran Mamdani on his first day in office and what they signal for New York City’s Jewish community in particular and the world in general. As a Holocaust historian, I have spent decades studying how antisemitism takes hold—not only through violence, but through policy decisions, legal reversals, and the systematic removal of protections for Jews. History teaches us that danger rarely begins with overt brutality. It begins when leaders normalize hostility and dismantle safeguards, often under ideological pretexts.
• Dissolved NYC–Israel economic cooperation initiatives, severing formal ties between the city and Israeli-American businesses and communities.
On his very first day as mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population in the world, Mayor Mamdani took the following actions: • Revoked New York City’s use of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, eliminating the city’s primary tool for identifying modern antisemitism, including when it targets Jews under the guise of “anti-Zionism.” • Eliminated the city’s anti-BDS executive order, signaling that economic warfare against the world’s only Jewish state is now acceptable city policy. Israel, again, is the only functioning democracy in the Middle East, one that embraces religious freedom, gay rights and women’s rights. No Muslim run state embraces these freedoms. Moreover, Israel is an ally of the United States.
As journalist Amy Albertson noted, when a mayor’s first executive actions dismantle measures specifically designed to protect the Jewish population, it is reasonable to draw conclusions about intent or, at the very least, indifference. History shows that such indifference is never benign. These are not symbolic gestures. They are concrete policy decisions that weaken Jewish protections, legitimize antisemitic activism, and isolate Jewish communities socially and economically. This is how antisemitism is laundered into respectability— through bureaucratic language, ideological framing, and the erosion of safeguards. Europe has seen this pattern before. Jews have seen this pattern before. And history teaches us that when Jewish protections are the first to go, Jews are never the last to suffer. I urge those receiving this message to take these developments seriously, to speak out, and to demand accountability. Silence has never protected Jewish communities. Awareness and action sometimes do. We see Mamdani, a practicing Muslim, once again taking political actions that raise serious concerns about tolerance and respect for minority rights, which the vast majority of Muslims worldwide do not embrace—in other words, his antisemitic and intolerant actions should not be a surprise because he was raised to have them. His recent moves restricting
protections for Jewish communities echo a disturbing historical pattern illustrated dramatically by Adolf Hitler: the Führer began by undermining civil rights of Jews, and then years later, he ended it by killing them in Auschwitz. While Mamdani is not committing violence, the effect of eroding legal protections that can and will lead to violent behavior is reminiscent of the early steps Hitler took upon assuming power—first stripping Jews of their rights, and only later escalating to mass violence. Hitler, like Mamdani, styled himself a socialist and revoked Jewish rights; the lesson is clear: Limiting the rights of any community sets a dangerous precedent. Mamdani would have been far wiser to avoid this path. Time and again, he—and countless other Islamic leaders across the globe—demonstrate that most Muslims are not our allies or friends, particularly toward Jews. It reminds me of two catchphrases that contain a lot of truth: 1) Maybe not all terrorists are Muslims, but the vast majority of terrorists are Muslims. 2) There are two types of Muslims in the world—there is the radical Muslim who wants to cut off your infidel head, and then there is the moderate Muslim who wants the radical Muslim to cut off your head. Mamdani’s actions will make it easier for radical Muslims and antisemites to target and persecute Jews in New York, which could ultimately lead to violence and oppression—an outcome he appears to be enabling through the steps he has taken. He is an antisemite and an immoral and dangerous man. Bryan Rigg, PhD (Yale, Cambridge University), American Military and Holocaust Historian Author, Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers; Japan’s Holocaust

In 2025, ZAKA Search & Rescue Responded To 7,000+ Cases, Saving Lives And Providing Dignity To The Deceased
JEWISHCONNECTION.NEWS • JANUARY 2026 • PAGE 16
In 2025, ZAKA Search & Rescue responded to more than 7,000 cases across Israel and internationally, carrying out its core mission of Kavod Hameit and providing clarity and closure to families facing sudden and traumatic loss. Throughout the year, ZAKA volunteers were deployed to over a dozen terror attacks, more than 2,300 traffic accidents including the recovery of 160 fatalities and over 500 Chesed Shel Emet operations involving work accidents, drownings and other unnatural deaths. Teams were also called to more than 130 cases in which individuals were found deceased after decomposing in their homes, situations that require careful victim identification and sensitive coordination with families and authorities. In addition, ZAKA carried out over 40 search and rescue operations for missing persons and responded to nearly 4,000 rapid response and medical emergency calls. In many of these cases, volunteers arrived first on scene, stabilizing situations and preserving critical information while maintaining dignity for victims. “ZAKA’s responsibility is to the deceased and to their families who need answers,” said ZAKA CEO Dubi Weissenstern. “Our volunteers work quietly and professionally to ensure every person is treated with respect and that families can bury their loved ones with dignity and certainty.” ZAKA’s work in 2025 also included international deployments focused on victim identification and recovery. Following a deadly terror attack in Sydney on the first night of Hanukkah, ZAKA sent an experienced team to assist local authorities and the Jewish community with identification efforts and Kavod Hameit. Additional responders were deployed to Texas after severe flooding along the Guadalupe River to support recovery operations and help return the deceased to their families. “In moments of tragedy, families are searching for answers and for their loved ones to be treated with care,” said ZAKA U.S. Executive Director Moshe Rozenberg. “ZAKA’s role is to support authorities with expertise while ensuring that dignity and family closure remain at the center of the response.” To support its mission, ZAKA operates a range of specialized units, all designed to complement its core Chesed Shel Emet and victim identification work. The Victim Identification Unit leads recovery and identification operations nationwide and serves as the foundation of ZAKA’s activities. Supporting units include the Search and Rescue Unit for missing persons, the Rapid Response Motorcycle Unit for immediate medical assistance and the Resilience and Healing Unit which supports volunteer wellbeing. ZAKA also operates Divers and Jet Ski Units for water recovery, Jeep and ATV Units for difficult terrain and a Drone Unit for aerial search and mapping. ZAKA maintains teams staffed by Muslim, Druze and Christian volunteers who serve their own communities with cultural and religious sensitivity. Its International Rescue Unit, recognized by the United Nations, deploys abroad to natural disasters and mass casualty events. Additional support services include a Legal Unit that assists families with required legal processes and helps prevent unnecessary autopsies and a dedicated unit that provides essential equipment to families during the mourning period. “Every case represents a life and a family,” Weissenstern added. “In 2025, ZAKA remained focused on its responsibility to
ZAKA Team on the Ground in Australia - December 16, 2025 bring dignity, certainty and closure in the most difficult circumstances.” Founded to honor the dead in accordance with religious tradition, ZAKA has evolved into a full-scale emergency response network, with over 4,000 trained volunteers operating 24/7 across Israel to honor the dead, aid the living and bring dignity in
times of devastation. Today, it operates a wide range of units – from rapid medical response and search and rescue to water recovery to culturally sensitive burial teams serving Israel’s Jewish, Bedouin, Arab and Druze communities to international units deploying at a moment’s notice to crises across the globe.
