The students also volunteer in the local Ben Gamla Charter School after school program, as well as with Friendship Circle and CTeen, and have opportunities to teach in Hebrew schools, sharing the beauty of Torah and Chassidus with younger children.
The seminary also offers exciting trips and activities, including visits to Universal Studios, the Everglades, and Key West, as well as programs featuring renowned guest speakers and interactive shiurim.
Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and develop their unique talents in service of their school and community.

ZakaSearch&Rescue OperatingNonstop AmidOperation RoaringLion
[Above] “ZAKA Search & Rescue’s responsibil ity is to the deceased and to the families who depend on us for certainty and dignity,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue CEO Dubi Weissenstern
{Below} “Even in times of war, ZAKA Search & Rescue’s volunteers work tirelessly to ensure every individual is treated with respect and that families can lay their loved ones to rest with clarity and honor,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue’s U.S. Executive Director Moshe Rozenberg.
Since the launch of Operation Roaring Lion, ZAKA Search & Rescue has been operating around the clock, responding to the full spectrum of emergencies across Israel while maintaining its core mission of Kavod HaMeis, honoring the deceased. Beyond routine responses to accidents and fatalities, ZAKA volunteers have been on the front lines of every Iranian and Hezbollah mis sile, rocket and drone strike.
Full time ZAKA Search & Rescue liaisons are embedded with the IDF Homefront Command, mobilizing and directing ZAKA’s units even before the impacts occur. Equipment and personnel are continuously deployed to the field, with temporary trailers strategically deployed across the country to ensure rapid restock ing and immediate return to service, often responding within the very neighborhoods volunteers have lived in for years.
Since the operation began, all special operations teams have been on emergency standby, operating under the guidance of ZAKA Search & Rescue’s national command center.
“Our incredible volunteers in the field are the first to arrive and the last to leave each scene of devastation, helping to extricate those trapped under the rubble so emergency medical services can triage, treat and transport, and helping recover those for whom medical treatment is no longer possible, giving their fami lies as much closure as we can,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue Chief of Operations Chaim Weingarten. “Whether it’s a car acci dent, terror attack, rocket strike or complex recovery, our vol unteers demonstrate extraordinary expertise, compassion and sensitivity on every scene.”
In addition to wartime operations, ZAKA Search & Rescue volunteers continue their broader emergency response work, responding to fatalities, traffic accidents, work accidents, drown ings and other tragedies, as well as search and rescue missions for missing persons.

“ZAKA Search & Rescue’s responsibility is to the deceased and to the families who depend on us for certainty and dignity,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue CEO Dubi Weissenstern. “Our vol unteers are not responding to abstract scenes, they are respond ing to homes they grew up in, to neighbors they saw hours ago. For the first time during this war, we have deployed our Resilience Unit to the scene of every rocket and drone strike scene where volunteers may encounter fatalities, ensuring our holy volunteers receive the support needed, on site, to continue their holy work and return back to their families.”
“Even in times of war, ZAKA Search & Rescue’s volunteers work tirelessly to ensure every individual is treated with respect and that families can lay their loved ones to rest with clarity and honor,” said ZAKA Search & Rescue’s U.S. Executive Director Moshe Rozenberg. “Each volunteer embodies our mission non stop, standing beside families and authorities so dignity, compas sion and closure remain at the center of every response.”
Founded to honor the dead in accordance with religious tra dition, ZAKA has evolved into a full scale emergency response network, with over 4,000 trained volunteers operating 24/7
across Israel to honor the dead, aid the living and bring dignity in times of devastation. Today, it operates a wide range of units –from rapid medical response and search and rescue to water recovery to culturally sensitive burial teams serving Israel’s Jewish, Bedouin, Arab and Druze communities to international units deploying at a moment’s notice to crises across the globe.

This month, acclaimed pianist, composer, and bandleader Emmet Cohen released his ren dition of “Well You Needn’t,” the lead single from his upcoming album Universal Truth (out May 29 via Mack Avenue Records). Emmet brings a swinging take on the Thelonious Monk composition alongside jazz royalty Ron Carter (bass), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet) and Joe Farnsworth (drums). Recorded in celebration of the 2026 centennial year of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Universal Truth honors the pian ist’s forebears by carrying forward their spirit of personal and spiritual discovery in his own dis tinctive style. Solidifying his reputation as the hardest working man in Jazz, Cohen kicks off his 10 month international tour including the Thursday, April 30th 2026 International Jazz Day celebration in Chicago with Herbie Hancock.
Widely regarded as one of the leading pian ists of his generation, Emmet Cohen has built his reputation on bridging Jazz’s storied lineage with a deeply communal, modern approach. From his collection of Masters Legacy Series recordings—featuring icons including Jimmy Cobb, Benny Golson, Albert “Tootie” Heath, and Houston Person—to his widely popular livestream series Live From Emmet’s Place, Cohen has consistently emphasized connection across generations and audiences.
Universal Truth features classic tunes asso ciated with the album’s twin inspirations of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, carefully curated through Cohen’s personal connection with the repertoire.
For the album’s rendition of “My Funny Valentine,” Cohen brought together bassist Ron Carter and tenor saxophonist George Coleman for a poignant reunion, more than sixty years after they performed on the Miles Davis album of the same name at Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall.
The rhythm section for the album is Cohen’s trio with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drum mer Joe Farnsworth, who kick off the proceed ings with a taut reduction of Davis and Bud Powell’s “Budo” from The Birth of the Cool. Carter takes over the bass duties for a brisk dash through Monk’s “Well You Needn’t,” with Jeremy Pelt contributing a blistering trumpet solo. Pelt and Carter are also featured on “Gingerbread Boy,” the classic composition by

Jimmy Heath who also would have celebrated his 100th this year. The album concludes with Coltrane’s “Blue Trane,” with the twin tenors of Coleman and Tivon Pennicott joining Pelt and the trio for a rollicking excursion through the landmark tune. The centerpiece of Universal Truth is Cohen’s titular suite, an ambitious three part composition that is as deeply per sonal and revelatory as anything that he has con jured to date.
“In all my research and study into John Coltrane, one phrase always stuck out,” Cohen explains. “‘Universal Truth.’ When Trane talked about his artistry and his calling, his intention was always to seek that universal truth. I interpret that to mean his higher power, his version of God, his connection to the source that connects and calls to every living thing on Earth.”
With Universal Truth, Emmet Cohen cele brates the great discoveries of past masters by making his own search for the endless reve lations contained within those simple, pro found, vast universal truths.
Tracklisting: 1. Budo
2. Well You Needn’t 3. My Funny Valentine

Keller’sKorner: World Baseball Classic
ByNeilKeller
Welcome back to Keller’s Korner. Another thrilling World Baseball Classic has wrapped up, with the semi finals and finals taking place at loanDepot Park in Miami. In a dramatic champion ship game, Eugenio Suarez delivered a clutch RBI double in the top of the ninth to lift Venezuela to a 3–2 victory over Team USA. A lively crowd of 36,490 watched the action, including a two run homer from Bryce Harper.
But as always in Keller’s Korner, I research the Jewish angle and must ask: How did the Jewish players perform at the 2026 WBC?
Jewish Players Around the Tournament Team USA – Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman of the Chicago Cubs represented Team USA but struggled at the plate, going 2 for 14 for a .143 average. Several other Jewish American Major Leaguers—including Max Fried of the New York Yankees—opted not to participate in this year’s tournament.
Team Mexico – Rowdy Tellez
Rowdy Tellez, whose mother is Jewish and father is of Mexican descent, played first base for Team Mexico. Now with the Atlanta Braves, Tellez finished the tournament hitting .111 (1 for 9) with two walks and two strikeouts.
Team Israel: A Tournament to Be Proud Of
Team Israel entered Pool D facing a gauntlet of powerhouse teams—Venezuela and the Dominican Republic—along with Nicaragua and the Netherlands. Despite having fewer Major Leaguers than their opponents, Israel exceeded expectations and finished third in the pool with a 2–2 record, securing automatic qualification for the 2030 WBC.
Brad Ausmus, former All Star catcher and current New York Yankees bench coach, managed the squad. He told MLB.com that the team felt tremendous support throughout the tournament: “We see everything up on the scoreboard — people wearing Israeli T shirts or holding the Israeli flag. The hope is more play ers become interested in playing for Israel. Every time an Israeli team wins a baseball game in a big tournament like this, it helps.”
Israel’s roster featured MLB players Dean Kremer, Harrison Bader, Spencer Horwitz, Garrett Stubbs, and Robert Stock, along with a strong supporting cast. Ausmus, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Marquis, and others brought invaluable Major League experience to the dugout.
Game by Game Breakdown
Game 1: Venezuela 11, Israel 3
Despite the loss, Israel produced memorable moments. Harrison Bader (SF Giants) launched a ninth inning home run. RJ Schreck (Toronto Blue Jays) added a solo shot in the sixth. Zach Levenson (St. Louis Cardinals) collected two hits.
Game 2: Israel 5, Nicaragua 0
A dominant performance. Dean Kremer (Baltimore Orioles) threw over four scoreless innings to set the tone.
Game 3: Dominican Republic 10, Israel 1
Israel fell to a stacked Dominican lineup.
Spencer Horwitz (Pittsburgh Pirates) provided the lone run

with a fourth inning home run.
Game 4: Israel 6, Netherlands 2
Israel closed the tournament strong.
Jake Gelof (LA Dodgers) drove in three runs.
Matt Mervis (Washington Nationals) added two RBIs.

Noah Mendlinger (St. Louis Cardinals) led the team with a .455 batting average. The roster featured 30 players: 17 pitch ers, two catchers, six infielders, and five outfielders—including a rare brother duo, C.J. Stubbs (Toronto Blue Jays) and Garrett Stubbs (Philadelphia Phillies).

Final Thoughts
Every player, coach, and fan I met radiated pride and passion for Team Israel. Their 2–2 finish, their resilience, and their spirit made this WBC a meaningful success. With continued growth and visibility, I expect Jewish players to make an even bigger impact at the 2030 World Baseball Classic.

Deb El Food Products And Gibber Family Donate 2.1 Million Eggs To Met Council For Passover Distribution
As part of the Great American Egg Drive, Deb El Food Products and the Gibber Family donated 2,100,000 eggs to the Met Council’s distribution efforts, ensuring families received this essential holiday staple.
Just days before Passover began Deb El Food Products and the Gibber Family, partnered with Met Council in the organi zation’s largest Passover food distribution in history, provided more than 3.5 million pounds of Kosher for Passover food that helped families across New York City and Long Island celebrate the holiday with dignity, despite rising food costs.
As part of the Great American Egg Drive, Deb El Food Products and the Gibber Family donated 2,100,000 eggs to the Met Council’s distribution efforts, ensuring families received this essential holiday staple. The distribution reached more than 350,000 people through 250 distribution points, conducted in partnership with 230 community organizations and local food pantries, and supported by over 800 volunteers, including gov ernment officials and community members.
Supporting local communities is a cause close to the heart of America’s egg farmers, who donate eggs to food banks and hun ger relief organizations year round. This spring, the American Egg Board expanded those efforts through the Great American Egg Drive, delivering eggs directly from farms to food banks nationwide so that wholesome, nutritious protein reaches families who need it most.
In the weeks leading up to Passover, the Met Council surged over $6 Million worth of food to its pantries, partners, and special distribution sites. In addition to the eggs, other staples included 61,000 pounds of matzah, over 51,000 gallons of grape juice, Kosher for Passover chicken, gefilte fish, tuna, apple sauce, borscht, cake mix, chopped walnuts, cocoa powder, jam, lemon juice, macaroons, matzah meal, potato starch, sugar, tomato sauce, vinegar, fresh fruits and vegetables.
“We are deeply honored to give back to the communities we serve,” said Deb El Food Products Vice President Michael Gibber. “This year, we are proud to contribute over 2.1 million eggs to help more than 350,000 people celebrate Passover with dignity. Giving back is at the core of who we are, and supporting the Jewish community during this important holiday is one of the most meaningful ways we can make a difference. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.”
“Giving back to our communities is a fundamental value that has been passed down through generations,” said Deb El Food Products President and CEO Elliot Gibber. “We are committed to finding opportunities to support those we serve, and our part nership with the American Egg Board allows us to share the nutri tional value of eggs with families in need. It is rewarding to see how our contributions help bring comfort and joy to so many dur ing the holiday season.”

“The generosity of Deb El Food Products and the Gibber Family in donating 2.1 million eggs was truly remarkable,” said Met Council CEO David G. Greenfield. “Thanks to their support and our partnership with the Great American Egg Drive, families across New York City and Long Island have access to this essen tial Passover staple. This collaboration helped make the holiday brighter for food insecure families and underscores the power of community working together to fight hunger.”

This year’s distribution reflected a significant expansion in both scale and impact. Powered by hundreds of volunteers and a network of community partners, Met Council is reaching deeper into neighborhoods and serving more families than ever before. The organization’s efforts ensure that Jewish families across the region could celebrate Passover with dignity, regardless of eco nomic circumstances. As inflation and economic uncertainty con tinue to affect families year round, the Met Council remains com mitted to fighting food insecurity and expanding its efforts beyond Passover, leveraging partnerships with government agen cies, corporate sponsors, and community organizations to pro
vide emergency food assistance to Jewish families in need.

recently at the FIU Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach, where I had the privilege of meeting Olympian Jared Firestone. Jared, a 36 year old Miami native who represented Israel in the 2026 Winter Olympics, was donating the speed suit he wore in the Olympic sport of skeleton — a powerful symbol of identity, perseverance, and Jewish pride.
For years, many Jewish boxers wore a “Star of David” on their trunks when they got into the ring. Jared has become well known for competing with a Star of David on his helmet as he wants to bring Jewish pride to the world.
A Miami Kid on the Olympic Ice
At the 2022 Winter Games, Jared came heartbreakingly close to qualifying. Instead of discouraging him, it fueled him. He dou bled down, trained harder, and ultimately earned his place at the 2026 Olympics.
How does a kid born in Miami end up flying headfirst down an icy track at 80 mph in the sport of skeleton?
“It was my dream to represent Israel,” Jared told me. “I ran track at Tulane after being the Broward County sprint champion. I went to law school at Cardozo in New York. Then, at 23, I had a mini stroke. I recovered, and while watching the 2014 Olympics, I saw skeleton on TV and decided to go for it.”
With a $10,000 grant from the City of Miami Beach, Jared began his unlikely Olympic journey.
Why Skeleton? “I love the running start,” he said. “I could use my track skills to excel.”

Olympian Jared Firestone
That choice paid off — Jared won eight medals on the Olympic
He also mentioned teammate AJ Edelman, another Jewish ath lete who helped pave the way for Israel in sliding sports. AJ was on the Israel skeleton team at the 2018 and 2026 winter Olympics. Jared added with a smile, “His brother is a comedian you might’ve seen on HBO.”
Training for Winter Olympics in Miami
Where does a Miami athlete train for a winter sport?
“I trained for strength and speed in Deerfield Beach,” Jared said. “And I spent time in Lake Placid, Park City, and Europe.”
Jewish Identity at the Core
Jared had his Bar Mitzvah in North Miami Beach and made Aliyah in 2019. His nickname, “The Jewish Jet,” came not from a Jewish teammate, but from a USA athlete who admired his speed.
His inspirations?
“My dad inspired me to go to law school. AJ Edelman inspired me to get into skeleton.”
He has even raced in St. Moritz — a city in Switzerland and the birthplace of the sport — though not on the historic Cresta Run.
Why Donate the Speed Suit?
“I’m grateful to Miami Beach for awarding me a grant to com pete,” Jared said. “I wanted to give back to the community.”
His speech at the museum was heartfelt and deeply moving. He spoke about Miami Beach’s history — once a place that dis criminated against Jews — and how meaningful it was to stand there as a proud Jewish Olympian.
Then he said a line that silenced the room:
“I was bringing a country with little history in the sport, and no Infrastructure to support it, all the way to the Olympic Games, where I was able to proudly display the Magen David on my hel met, for millions to see.”
He also thanked Samantha and Josh Bratter, whose immigra tion law firm and talent agency in Miami Beach helped “put the right people around me” to chase his dream.
A Mother’s Pride
Jared’s mother, Karen Firestone, shared her emotions:
“After October 7th, Jared’s drive increased. I thought he would make the Olympics. This has been so exciting. I was just happy he walked away in one piece.”
A Father’s Perspective
His father, Mark Firestone, added:
“Most athletes in this sport start at age 6, 7, or 8. Jared began as an adult at 26. We are so proud of him.”
A Suit That Represents More Than a Sport
Jared closed his speech with a message that resonated with everyone in the room:
“I wore this suit not just at the World Championships, but at the Olympic Games.”
He did not want to lift only himself — he wanted to lift all Jewish people. And because Miami Beach believed in his dream, he wanted the Jewish Museum of Florida to have the suit that car ried him — and Israel — onto the world stage.

RememberingRabbiDovidBryn: A South Florida Legend
ByRabbiMoisheKievman-ChabadChayil
Thursday, 6 Iyar April 23, 5786 (2026), marks the 24th Yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing) of South Florida Legend, the beloved Rabbi Dovid Bryn zt”l, Founder of Chabad Chayil & the California Club Shul. Mostly known for his unending acts of kind ness and genuine love for every human being, he is truly missed by all who knew him.
Some rabbis are known for their gigantic shuls and temples, but Rabbi Bryn had a much bigger Shul, one not bound by walls. His shul was in the flea markets, soccer fields of the JCC & in people’s homes. His Sunday afternoon would be spent in a teen ager’s living room with a pair of Teffillin and a group of friends. His Shul was in the community’s hearts.
Rabbi Bryn was a Chabad Rabbi and Shliach emissary of The Rebbe to North Miami Dade, whose life was tragically cut short at age 40 by Marfan Syndrome, a condition that affects the body’s connective tissue. For over a quarter of a century, Rabbi Bryn –the son of Holocaust survivors courageously battled the fatal dis ease that decimated his heart, yet managed to minister to, counsel and inspire tens of thousands of Jews and non Jews alike.
Rabbi Bryn fed the hungry and poor, counseled the sick and the troubled all with great courage, fortitude and self sacrifice. He arranged marriages, taught Torah and ethics to thousands, bridged the interfaith gap by working closely with people and clergymen of all faiths … he was the living embodiment of kind ness and bravery.
Some might be troubled by the precariousness of constantly living on the edge of existence, but the Rabbi’s overflowing con

cern for others left no room for worry over his own well being. He lived the equivalent of 120 years of good in a third of the time.
One friend commented on: RabbiDovidBryn.org, which was created to remember the legendary Chassid, ‘If he could breathe, then he would talk to others about G d’s good, the beauty of a Mitzvah, or life’s bright spots. If he could walk, then he would go to share life with others and show a positive perspective as it should be seen. If he could drink, then he would toast L’Chaim to all things positive and constructive. If he could sing, then he would. If he could do it, then he did. He showed strength not owned by men who appear stronger. He showed love that is only written about. He lived a full life of treating others as one would treat themselves. When I need an example of the unrelenting power of love, I think of him.’
For the past 24 years, we’ve been getting together for an annual Farbrengen, to say a L’Chaim, reminisce about the good times shared together and, most important, to talk about how his chesed his loving kindness for every human being could be emulated.
Please join us Thursday, April 23rd, 2026, at 8:30 p.m., for an hour long Farbrengen & inspiration. There will be Yahrtzeit Services at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Farbrengen both taking place at Chabad Chayil, 2601 Northeast 211 Terrace, Miami, Florida 33180 in the Highland Lakes section of West Aventura. The entrance is on Northeast 26th Avenue, in the temporary loca tion behind the new building. The Farbrengen will also be broad casted on Facebook Live as well as YouTube Live. It will also be shown live at: RabbiDovidBryn.org.
That morning Shacharit Services will be at 9:00 a.m., followed by a quick trip to Mount Sinai Cemetery on Opa Locka to say Tehillim at his resting place.
To view or share photos or experiences of this remarkable man, please visit: RabbiDovidBryn.org. You can also learn about the new Chabad Chayil center being built in his honor, by calling: (305) 770 1919 or visiting the website. To dedicate a part of the new building or even 1 square foot for $180, visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/Build.
Please dedicate this day to doing an extra Mitzvah, by going out of your way to doing someone a favor. You can be his hands and feet, in making this world a better place. Think global, but act local! Don’t push it off for tomorrow, do something today! And you will have a tremendous part of bringing healing to a wounded world; making it a better place for all, one good deed at a time, until the world reaches perfection, with the coming of Moshiach. May that happen today!

Miami’sOliviaOstrow BringsModern KosherCuisine ToNationalSpotlight OnFoodNetwork
Miami based Chef and Restaurateur Olivia Ostrow prepares to compete on the upcom ing season of 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing, premiering on Sunday, April 26th, 2026.
South Florida’s Jewish culinary scene is stepping into the national spotlight as Miami based Chef and Restaurateur Olivia Ostrow prepares to compete on the upcoming season of 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing, premiering on Sunday, April 26th, 2026.
Ostrow, the chef behind Maison Ostrow in North Bay Village, is the only Kosher chef competing in this season’s lineup. The high intensity competition, hosted by Michael Symon and Esther Choi, challenges 24 chefs to complete 24 culinary tasks over 24 consecutive hours, all vying for a $100,000 prize.
For Ostrow, the opportunity represents a chance to showcase her personality and how Kosher dining has evolved. At Maison Ostrow, she has built a reputation for redefining expectations around Kosher cuisine, blending French and Mediterranean influences with a modern, ele vated approach. The restaurant has quickly become a des tination for both observant diners and a broader audience seeking a refined culinary experience without compromise.
Her approach reflects a broader shift within the Jewish food world, where tradition and innovation increasingly coexist. Rather than adhering strictly to classic interpre tations, chefs like Ostrow are expanding the boundaries of Kosher dining by introducing global techniques, seasonal ingredients, and design forward hospitality that resonates with a new generation.
Ostrow’s impact has not gone unnoticed. She was named Best Chef in Miami by Aventura Magazine and included in The Algemeiner’s prestigious J100 list, which recognizes individuals making meaningful contributions to Jewish life around the world.
To celebrate her television debut, Ostrow will host a pre miere watch party at Maison Ostrow, inviting guests from across the community to come together for a shared moment of pride. The evening will feature a champagne toast, live entertainment and a live viewing of the episode, offering attendees the chance to experience both her cuisine and her milestone achievement firsthand.
As South Florida continues to thrive as a hub for Jewish culture and cuisine, Ostrow’s national debut underscores the region’s influence and the evolving story of Kosher din ing today.
Her appearance on 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing is not just a personal milestone but a reflection of a larger move ment: one where Jewish chefs are bringing their heritage, creativity, and vision to the forefront of the global culinary stage.
