The Piano Music World lost one of its great souls. December 31st was the last day of 2019 and at One Hundred and Three Years Old, Edith did not live to welcome the New Year. Most of her long life was dedicated to nurturing young piano artists. She was a revered member of the faculty of the Julliard School of Music in New York. Numerous students will treasure her memory. After she moved to Florida, Edith continued to help and guide young pianists and in 1997 she cofounded the Miami International Piano Festival with Giselle Brodsky. The Festival is now Twenty-Three Years Old and Twenty – Six concerts are performed each year in Dade and Broward Counties by international performers.
For all those who would like to honor her memory, they may contribute to the Miami International Piano Festival Academy Scholarship Fund, miami pianofestacademy.com/ scholarship-funds/. The Scholarship Fund aids pianists around the world who would otherwise be denied access to a chance to become one of the piano greats. Honoring her memory all concerts at the Aventura Cultural Center will be dedicated to her.

Laser Vision Correction Is Changing Lives Dr. Stanley Braverman Continues To Help Make Vision Dreams Come True

Hollywood - For as long as she can remember, Irina Bashmakova has had problems with her eyes. Wearing glasses since the second grade - and contacts since her early teens, the 30-year-old stay at home mother was very near sighted and was searching for laser surgery that would correct the problem and eliminate the glasses or contacts. While she had the problem, it wasn’t new to her family. Nearsightedness, or Myopia, as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which people can see close objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred. People with Myopia can have difficulty clearly seeing a movie or TV screen or the whiteboard while they are in school. Irina found that Myopia occurs if the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) is too curved. As a result, the light entering the eye isn’t focused correctly, and distant objects look blurred. Because she realized that something needed to be done - Irina began asking around for the best area doctor and eye center. That is how she discovered the Braverman Eye Center and Dr. Stanley Braverman.
When she came in for her consultation, Irina was blown away by the new Hollywood office as well as everyone who was involved. It was something she never expected. “I remember reading about the patients who had different procedures done,” she recalled. “The one thing that I took away from those articles in the Sun Times Newspaper was how Dr. Braverman and his staff were talked about often for the way they handled each patient. That was a huge selling point and also made me feel so much at ease.” So, last October, after consulting with Dr. Braverman, who explained every facet of the procedure, Irina embarked on a journey that would eliminate the blurry vision and replace it with clear eyesight. It truly left her speechless. “All I could remember, after the surgery, when I had no problem seeing, that I started to cry,” she recalled. “It was the first time in my life that I could ever remember seeing so clearly. It was indeed life-changing.” As she recovered from the Laser Vision Correction (PRK) and felt better and better every day, Irina was ready to recommend the procedure, Dr. Braverman,
the professional staff and the state-of-theart facility, to anyone and everyone who would listen. “I can understand how people would be apprehensive about anything to do with their eyes,” she said. “But after everything I experienced, I would tell everyone to check it out. It has really made a difference in my life. What To Expect With Z-lasik Surgery All Laser Z-Lasik surgery is performed on a patient’s cornea, which provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to
moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision. About Dr. Stanley Braverman Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine’s Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is also an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Nova Southeastern School of Optometry and the official LASIK and Cataract Surgeon for the Florida Panthers. Along with treating patients, Dr. Braverman, a board certified ophthalmologist, has been a medical researcher, and is the inventor of several eye surgical instruments, and author of many articles for medical journals. The Aventura International Film Series continues with Cyrano, My Love on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Set in December 1897, Paris, the film follows Edmond Rostand, who is not yet thirty, but already has two children and too much anxiety. He has not written anything for two years. In desperation, he offers the great Constant Coquelin a new play, a heroic comedy, in verse, for the holidays. There’s one problem: it is not yet written. Ignoring the whims of actresses, the demands of his producers, the jealousy of his wife, the stories of his best friend’s heart and the lack of enthusiasm of all those around him, Edmond must focus and put pen to paper. For now, he has only the title: “Cyrano de Bergerac.” Not rated, this film is from France with English subtitles. The Aventura International Film Series presented by the City of Aventura is hosted by Shelly Isaacs who introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Isaacs is founder, programmer and commentator for South Florida’s popular Café Cinematheque International programs. Isaacs holds a master’s degree in Media Ecology Studies from New York University, where he served as an adjunct professor in cultural studies. Presently, he teaches foreign-language film appreciation in the Lifelong Learning Society at Florida Atlantic University and at Florida International University. He is the film expert for Celebrity Cruise Lines during their annual voyage to the Cannes International Film Festival as well as on

With more vendors and more flavor than before, the 2nd Annual Plant-Based Festival will be held at Gulfstream Park Village, South Florida’s premier entertainment destination, on Sunday, Feb. 9 from 11:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. The event will showcase the latest in food, drink and plant-based goods coming to The Village Center. The festival, located in the Gulfstream Park Village shopping area, will feature a main stage for presenters, music, giveaways from merchants, 60+ plant-based vendors, and contests for the kids. The event is family-friendly and free to attend. The 2nd Annual Plant-Based Festival might be the gamechanger that points you in the right direction for your health. “It will be a day of food, drink and fashion that can direct people to live happy, fulfilled lives while making positive contri-
butions to the community,” says Alex Schreer, Director of Experiential Marketing for Madison Marquette who represents Gulfstream Park Village. The Village Center at Gulfstream Park will be transformed into a village of food trucks, consumer goods, and some surprises still in the works. Food vendors will be serving unique, delicious organic food. Eco-products and plant-based clothing, as well as oils, soaps, plants, and hemp products will be available. Healthy drinks will be accessible at several sites. Aventura Hospital’s Nutrition and Diabetes Educator Michelle Larea will be introducing the event and discussing why plantbased diets and lifestyles are positive for human health and the Earth. Attendees should come ready for fun and ready to eat by bringing their own reusable water bottle, cup or cutlery to cut down on waste. Alternatives will be available, but every little bit helps! Inspired by the City’s Plastic Straw Ban, Gulfstream Park Village will be giving away multicolor stainless-steel reusable
straws to the first 500 attendees. Why an emphasis on Plant-based living? According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) International Medicine in 2016, high animal protein intake was positively associated with cardiovascular mortality, whereas high plant-based protein intake had just the opposite effect, especially among individuals with at least one lifestyle risk factor. Many studies since then have shown that modification in a diet that reduces red meat shows a marked decrease in cardiovascular incidents, resulting in an increase in longevity. As far as the environmental impact of a meat-based society, the Hippocrates Institute, named in honor of the ancient Greek physician who recorded the first medical case studies, printed a report back in 2012 stating that “Greenhouse gases attributed to livestock are more than double that of transportation emissions.” The report also noted that livestock are fed 35%
of the world’s grains, while large pockets of the world go hungry. And that was back in 2012. There are countless books and a myriad of literature available online to know more about plant-based living and the positive effects of vegan diets; you can start with the International Vegan Association website. There also are many podcasts and software avenues that educate and assist in resources and competitive pricing for vegan foods and plant-based products. But, as a real starter, you can begin face-to-face with experts, information and resources right at your fingertips on February 9th at Gulfstream Park Village. Here are a few things that will keep you in control of your feminine health (BPT) - The vagina is a delicate ecosystem that must be maintained at a normal pH of 3.8-4.5, the same pH as beer, if you can believe it! Everyday events like blood with your period, sex, soaps, certain medications and the water in a douche can all elevate the natural vaginal balance, because those elements have a pH of 7.5 or 8. When the pH is disrupted, you might experience burning, itching or an unpleasant odor.
What to do? OB/GYN, Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., offers the following tips. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice, as it’s good for the bladder, and the acidity helps balance pH levels to relieve UTI symptoms. Foods high in sugar can increase the risk of yeast infections. So, avoid processed foods, alcohol and sugary drinks, and eat more fruits, veggies, and whole grains
to help prevent yeast issues and UTIs. Most vaginal odor is not the result of poor hygiene. The secret is to keep the vaginal pH balanced, instead of just masking the problem with scented soaps, fragrance sprays, irritating wipes and pads that can be harmful to delicate tissue. Over-the-counter RepHresh Gel does just that. It keeps the pH balanced to the normal pH and eliminates odor for up to three days. Lingering bacteria can cause odor too.
