She’s a hometown girl One time star basketball player, Tamara James, brings her passion to Dania Beach as Mayor By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Dania Beach - Mayor Tamara James remembers, like it happened yesterday. It was a series of events that led up to

where she is today. While many have known Dania Beach’s new mayor since she was a child, and a standout athlete that made her a four-time all-state bas-

ketball player at South Broward High; and fouryear standout at the University of Miami, her role is much different these days. The mother of a young

son, and an advocate of so many positive causes in her community, Mayor James had one of those “how did I get here” moJames, Page 6A

ments back on November 8th. She was elected to the Dania Beach City Commission - and as the top vote getter - was named mayor. Never interested in politics in the past, James found out firsthand about the way her city, where she grew up and became what she is today, continued to turn their back on her and acted as if they didn’t care about her foundation or any of the positives she wanted for Dania Beach. “This had nothing to do with politics,” James recalled. “This was just people not doing their job. It got to the point where I went to a few commission meetings and was so crushed by what I was watching, I needed to do something.” That something for James was to stand up for what she felt - and for those progressive people in the community that wanted better for this city.

“I may have lost it for a moment when I told the commission that they were not doing their job and I was going to run to take their place,” James said. “When I got home, I said to myself, what did I do. But what I did was right. We have a great city and it should be embraced by everyone who is associated with it.” That moment may have changed the fortunes of Dania Beach in more ways than anyone would ever imagine. Being a college graduate, who already has had the opportunity to travel the world, James, 32, is progressive, but respectful not to change what is charming and good about Broward’s oldest city. Dania Beach is indeed on the brink of breaking out. For those in real estate who preach “location, location, location” this is what they are talking about. Five minutes

from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport and Atlantic Ocean, is all any developer wants to hear, and James is ready to help open the doors to her community. “To me, this position as mayor and to be a part of the commission, is about giving our residents and businesses reason to be here,” she pointed out. “We will fight to make this a place that everyone wants to be a part of - east and west.” While much of the attention has long been paid to the eastern portion of the city, having James on the commission will truly even things out. She knows all about how the infrastructure of the entire city will be judged from the beaches all the way out west. One of the newest projects that will put this city squarely in the spotlight is Dania Pointe, which is a 102-acre premier mixed-use develop-

ment with almost 1 million square feet of retail and restaurants in addition to Class A offices, hotels, luxury apartments and public event space. With 1,600 linear feet of frontage on 1-95 and immediate proximity to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades Cruise Port, and the DCOTA Design Center, Dania Pointe’s sophisticated mix of shop, work, live, play and stay options will make it this area’s preeminent

lifestyle destination. While I-95 is a tremendous venue to promote the city, U.S. 1 is also where this community will be judged. While improvements have been made - and continue to upgrade Dania Beach, many have been asking about the longtime “Antique District” - where many ideas have been made throughout the years to get all those who have shops north and south of Dania Beach Blvd. on the same page and make it a des-

tination once again. James scored thousands of points in high school, college, the WNBA and in the Israeli league, but this Nike, Gatorade and McDonald’s All-American, who led South Broward to three consecutive state titles and was named 2002 Florida Player of the Year, knows that where she is at these days is an entirely different arena. One that she is looking forward to making a difference in.

Here are some ways your smartphone has been your ultimate holiday helper this season (BPT) - The holidays have always been the elf's time to shine. Decorating, wrapping, toy making-it's what traditional holiday helpers spend all year prepping for. But in a world of online shopping, on-the-go recipe planning and carols, a streaming smartphone and wireless plan actually does the holidays better. Two-thirds of Americans say their cellular data plan works overtime during the holidays, according to research from Straight Talk Wireless, with nearly half of Americans saying they simply couldn't make it through the busy holiday season without their smartphone. As you start to tackle your holiday to-do list, don't go it alone. Use your smartphone to make these four holiday tasks a whole lot merrier. * Make your list and check it twice. Party planning, shopping lists,

holiday calendars -tasks of the holiday season used to require a whole library of materials to record everything. However, with your smartphone, you can catalog holiday to-dos in one simple spot. That way, whenever you need it, your next holiday task is just a click away. * Be the ultimate holiday gifter. In many cases, the hardest part of shopping for loved ones is actually deciding what you're going to get them while sticking to your budget. This is especially true for people who seem to have everything, or those known to be very picky. But have no fear - your smartphone can turn you into a gifting-genius by giving you endless hours of online browsing while helping you find the best prices. In fact, forty-one percent of Americans say they will buy up to 10 gifts on their smart-

phones during the holiday season. * Put your phone plan on the nice list. Switching to a more affordable cellular plan this year can help you spread more holiday cheer. Straight Talk Wireless offers consumers access to the best phones on the best networks at half the cost. For just $45 per month you get unlimited talk, text and data with the first 5GB at high speeds (than 2G). And now you can double your data for only $10 more with Straight Talk Wireless' 10GB plan, with the first 10GB of data at high speeds (than 2G) - all for $55. And switching is easy because you can keep your phone, network and number with Straight Talk's Bring Your Own Phone program (BYOP). Best of all, there are no contracts, credit checks or mystery fees. Leave your old smartphone hassles behind

this year, and replace them with more time for holiday fun. * Get in the holiday spirit with song. Why not use your favorite music app for a little seasonal merriment this year? Whether you import an established holiplaylist of day tried-and-true classics or create one of your own, the right holiday mix can get you into the spirit of the season and turn your holiday to-do list into holiday to-done. To learn more about how Straight Talk Wireless can help you make the most of this holiday season, visit get.straighttalk.com/holiday. *At 2G speeds, the functionality of some data applications, such as streaming audio or video may be affected. Please refer always to the latest Terms and Conditions of Service at StraightTalk.com.

Based on a comparison of the average cost of the $45 Straight Talk Service Plan plus average sales tax and fees and the average total monthly cost on an individual 2-year service contract plan with unlimited talk, text and comparable high speed data on the top two carriers. Plan costs include all taxes,

fees and overage charges. Source: Nationwide survey conducted September 2016. KRC Research conducted this research on behalf of Straight Talk via an online survey of 1,039 U.S. adults ages 18+. The survey was conducted between November 3rd-November 4th, 2016.

ment and meet with training officers, detectives, and crime scene technicians. The goal of the academy is to give residents better insight and understanding of the policies and procedures of the department, as well as the responsibilities and demands placed on police personnel. The academy included presentations and "hands on" instruction showing participants the training officers go through to prepare for various scenarios. They also had the opportunity to do a "ride-along" with a Patrol Officer. "I want to be a Police Officer, so I figured it'd be a nice way to see behind the scenes of the Police Department basically and see how they work,” said Academy participant Brian Rodriguez, “So this whole experience has been great. I mean, I've seen the Motorcycle Unit, I've seen the K9 Unit and I understand so much more about policing.” The 21st Academy class celebrated its graduation last week with a special celebration attended by Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez and other members of the Department’s Command Staff. Some of the activities of the Academy are featured in a video produced by the City of Hollywood’s Office of Public Affairs and Marketing that can be viewed on the City’s YouTube Channel, Hollywood Community Television. "It taught me about my community, I've only lived here for a year and half and I'm learning more and more about police and citizen relationships,” said Academy member Courtney Montiero. “I've heard about task forces, that even as an attorney, I didn't know they existed. So I think it's very helpful to educate yourself about the City in which you live and how police conduct themselves. I think they're doing a lot more community policing which you don't hear about." The Department will host the 22nd Citizens' Police Academy in 2017. Registration will be announced in the summer.

Make Christmas special with delicious appetizers Garlicky Shrimp Cocktail, Meatball Parm Skewers and Queso move them from the skillet and wipe the skillet clean. Return skillet to stovetop over medium heat. Pour marinara into the skillet. Stir in thinly sliced garlic and remaining Parmesan, bring sauce to simmer then add the meatballs back to the pan. Spoon sauce over the meatballs. Cover the pan with a lid and simmer meatballs for another 10-12 minutes, or until cooked through. Top each meatball with mozzarella. Cover pan with lid and cook until the cheese is melted. Turn off heat. Top each meatball with a whole basil leave, folded, and pierce with a toothpick to serve.

No matter how many people you ask, if you celebrate Christmas, the dinner is really something that you look forward to each year. From ham, turkey, prime rib and goose to other not so traditional foods, there is always plenty to eat - and we all seem to get together and spend the day with family and friends. In addition to the delicious main course, there are also appetizers that are always fun to eat. It’s all about food and fun when everyone comes together. Hallandale Beach Chamber making dreams come true with its Annual Holiday Toy Drive It was time to get in the holiday spirit for the Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce on December 13 with the Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Sponsored by Memorial Healthcare Systems & III Forks Restaurant, this event was truly one to remember as there will be joy for so many youngsters during the holiday season. Among those attending the event included (LEFT TO RIGHT IN TOP ROW): Kimberley Russell, America’s Quality Care Services Inc.; Oscar Llorente, Mount Sinai Medical Center; Milin Espino, Memorial Healthcare Sys-

tems; Michael Fucheck, Gulfstream Park; Mayor Joy Cooper, City of Hallandale Beach; Norma Jules, Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce; Lourdes Abikarram, Allstate Insurance Abikarram Agency; Tamara Tretyakova, Russian Miami Service; and Scott Singer, Insider Career Strategies. Golden Isles Tennis Center and Parks & Recreation Staff & Board members set for the holidays It happens every year around the holidays, and once again this year, members of the community stepped up to make this season very special. Coming together for a great cause was the theme of last week’s luncheon at Mardi Gras’ French Quarter in Hallandale Beach as 30 people from the Golden Isles Tennis Center and Parks & Recreation Staff & Board members making a major contribution to the Annual Hope For The Holidays. The event carried over to the next day as Foster Park was the place to be. Any community thrives on organizations who make a difference by coming together during holiday time to help lift spirits with gifts. A very special thanks to those from the City of Hallandale Beach Parks & Recreation - as well as the Golden Isles Tennis Center - which always does it right.

It was a trip back 30 years with Hallandale High’s 1986-87 state champion basketball team

By Larry Blustein Sfsuntimes@aol.com For the past 30 years, every time you walked into Hallandale High, you were reminded that the boys’ basketball program, back in 1986-87, was one of the best in school history. Last Friday night, while the 2016-17 team, under the direction of John Caddle, was playing host to the Flanagan, a little bit of that impressive past took center stage. The 30 year reunion of what many felt was one of the best boys’ basketball programs in Broward County history, was held as 10 of the 13 members of a team finished 31-1, got together or the first time in three decades. They came from Georgia, North Carolina and as close as Hallandale Beach for a reunion that was filled with stories, memories and a time when Hallandale’s Spectrum Gym was the toughest place to play in South Florida. With legendary Hall of

Fame head coach Greg Samuel leading the way as he did for so many years, the former players came out – introduced one by one. It was one of those moments that chills and tears were okay. “This was one of the most athletic teams ever in South Florida,” said Samuel, a former South Broward High and Florida State standout. “Even in today’s basketball, teams like that who had quickness and athleticism, come out on top.” A junior on that team, Brett Lewis was one of the best guards in Broward County. It was his play that advanced the Chargers to a 3A state playoffs that began with Quincy Shanks and ended with an 80-71 win over Orlando Jones for the title. Today, Lewis is a head high school basketball coach in Atlanta. The opportunity to come back to a school where his father was a longtime athletic director and supporter,

and where he had been a ball boy and star player, was something that he had long looked forward to. “This is such a great memory of a time in my life that will always be special,” said Lewis, who attended FIU after graduation from Hallandale. “To see all these guys I went through this with was really something very special.” One of the elite players on that 1987 championship team was Johnny Holmes. Easily one of the nation’s best basketball standouts, the 6-7 center ended up going to play for the University of Southern California. It was Holmes, who scored on a breakaway,

HEMMINGWAY’S

reverse dunk with 15 seconds left in a win over Jones, that has fond memories of his career at Hallandale. “Getting together with the people who were a part of a great time in your life was what this entire reunion was about,” Holmes said. “This team was so talented – everyone made a contribution.” The slam by Holmes in the final seconds punctuated the breakdowns that tormented Jones - a lack of intensity on defense and turnovers. In that championship game, Hallandale's offense scored numerous uncontested layups while a trio of Jones guards

committed for 16 turnovers. Besides Lewis and Holmes, the Chargers had a number of major stars on the team. Athletes such as center Donell Grier, who came up huge in every game that season as a junior, fueled this team that many felt could beat 4A powerhouse Miami High that season. “We had the chance to play Miami High in an AAU game and beat them by 10,” forward Reggie Samuel recalled. “Getting this many athletic basketball players on one team was unusual back then, as it is today.” The guard play on this team, with Lewis, Jeff Corouthers, Tony Williams, Pat Groome and the late Moses Frazier, was simply as good as you get – on offense and defense. As Reggie Samuel led the way from the forward position, he was not alone. Versatile Jonathan Witherspoon, Derrick Wallace and

Jody “Cadillac” Williams were solid on both sides of the court. “This was a team in every sense of the word,” Witherspoon explained. “Not only did we dominate at home – where we won something like 50 straight – but on the road as well. This was a team that would make a huge impact in today’s basketball as well. Too much speed and athleticism to slow down.” As Grier did his part in the middle, he had plenty of help from fellow cenSteve “Turtle” ters Williams and Holmes. As the players of 2016 talked with the stars of the past, there was a unique bond that Coach Caddle and his team had with the stars of the past. “For many years, teams have looked at that photo of the 1986-87 team hanging in the gym,” said Coach Samuel. “Tonight, many of them had the chance to see them in person, and that was a huge thrill for everyone.”

Kicking off the New Year with a heart healthy start

(BPT) - It is almost time to ring in the New Year, which means it is an opportune time to focus on your health and wellness. If you or a loved one is living with cardiovascular disease (CVD), you may be dealing with many burdens, including access to medications - an increasingly common problem. When prescribed a medication by a physician, most individuals expect to receive the medication without jump-

ing through hurdles. However, for many people affected by cardiovascular disease across the country, this is increasingly not always the case. According to Symphony Health Solutions, commercial payers deny up to 90 percent of initial claims submissions for patients with CVD, with the final rejection rate for patients at 73 percent. Many of these patients who are rejected have high cholesterol and/or familial hypercho-

lesterolemia (FH), which is an inherited form of significantly high cholesterol and one of the most common genetic diseases, affecting at least one in every 200 to 500 people. Thus, these patients are exploring new treatment regimens because they have not been able to get their low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or "bad" cholesterol, under control despite treatment with a statin - the current standard of treatment.

Additionally, many patients living with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), which is caused by a build-up cholesterol-rich of plaque in the arteries, are unable to get their LDL-C under control with current treatment options. With CVD being a major public health concern in the U.S, it is imperative to lower bad cholesterol for patients who have already had a cardiovascular event, like a heart attack or stroke, as well as patients with FH who require additional treatment options to lower their LDL-C levels along with their statin. Yet, there is a growing concern that many patients with uncontrolled LDL-C levels continue to face challenges in accessing PCSK9 inhibitors their physicians have prescribed based on the approved indication. PCSK9 (or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) inhibitors are human monoclonal antibodies that

block the protein PCKS9, which prevents the body's natural system from eliminating "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C) from the blood. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration carefully determined which patients would be appropriate for PCSK9 therapy given the clinical trial information, many payers have implemented restrictive prior authorization processes using stringent utilization criteria, management which is resulting in many patients being denied access. This is not unique to PCSK9s though; we have seen these restrictive authorization practices affecting patients seeking Hepatitis C and heart failure treatments as well. Being denied access to the medicine you are prescribed is tremendously frustrating and can leave patients feeling hopeless. However, it is important to know that, as a patient, there are certain things you can do to take action if this hap-

pens to you: • Talk to Your Doctor: If you are denied access to vital treatment, talk with your physician about what you can do to receive the therapy you need. • Share Your Story: Patients and physicians should feel empowered to speak out and engage with their networks, sharing their stories to help drive attention and awareness to the issue. • Engage Advocates: Seek out advocacy groups and patient networks that have resources. Make your health a priority for 2017. If you (or a loved one) suffers from CVD, make sure to talk to your physician - or encourage your friends and family - to ensure you or a loved one are receiving the appropriate medical care. For more information, visit www.advancecardiohealth.org.

6 simple strategies for eliminating holiday stress • Have one holiday drink and then switch to water. • Fill your plate with fresh veggies from the appetizer platter. • Skip the sauces; they are often heavy in salt, fat and calories. • Bring a healthy dish to share with everyone. • Avoid fasting; maintain a regular eating schedule.

(BPT) - The holidays bring a time to celebrate and get together with family and friends, but for many people, it can also come with a lot of stress. Social engagements, giftbuying and a seemingly endless amount of to-do's can bring unwanted emotions that make it hard to enjoy the season. To keep your holiday spirits bright, it's important to maintain a positive perspective and be aware of your feelings. The healthy lifestyle experts at the Mayo Clinic offer six simple strategies for reducing holiday stress so you can feel your best well into the new year. Help others Embrace the true spirit of the holidays by finding ways to give back. By sharing your time and talents with others, you'll get more out of the experi-

ence, and likely find some satisfaction and peace of mind in the process. "Work at a soup kitchen, organize a gift drive, read to a child or help your neighbor with something," suggests Sara Carlson, certified diabetes educator in the Department of Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic. "Reaching out to others makes us feel good about ourselves and reminds us that we aren't alone in facing challenges." Eat well Cookies, casseroles, cakes and cocoa - the holidays are ripe with temptation. Eating too many unhealthy foods can leave you feeling unwell both physically and emotionally. Indulge, but do so in moderation. A few strategies to help:

Say "no" It's difficult to decline an invitation or request for a favor during the holiday season. However, if you overload your schedule, your stress levels are bound to increase. A polite "no" when you're feeling overloaded can be a lifesaver. "We need to protect our spirit, knowing when to draw a line in the sand and say, 'Thank you for the opportunity, but I will not be able to participate,'" says Dr. Edward Creagan of the Mayo Clinic. "If we give and give, there is nothing left to give." Offer forgiveness No family is perfect and the holidays are sometimes reminders of this. Attempting to create the perfect holiday is impossible. Accept that things will go wrong, but learn to let go and forgive others, as well as yourself. "Be realistic," Dr. Creagan says. "If individuals have locked horns for most of the year, it is not reasonable to think that on one day all will be forgiven. We need to be gentle with ourselves. We need to forgive ourselves."

Schedule fun With so many things to cross off the list, it's easy to forget time to actually have fun during the holidays. So make sure to block off time on your schedule for favorite traditions. "Take time to do things you find relaxing or fun," says Carlson. "Watch your favorite comedy, take an evening drive to look at holiday lights or curl up with a good book." Prioritize R&R Stress can make it difficult to sleep, yet when you don't get enough sleep you can feel more anxious. To help your body get the rest it needs, try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule that allows for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

During the day, make space for relaxation as well so you don't get overloaded. Take a gentle yoga class or practice meditation for 20 minutes. This can help bring a sense of peace and calm in an otherwise hectic day. If you have trouble meditating, consider

online guided meditation or research audio options at your local library. For more easy ideas on managing stress and staying well through the holidays and beyond, visit www.mayoclinic.org/healt hy-lifestyle.
