Diabetes is a very deceptive disease with some surprising statistics. It affects approximately 25.8 million people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and one-third of people with diabetes have severe periodontal (gum) disease. plaque creates toxins that cause inflammation of your gums. Symptoms of this first stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, are red, swollen and bleeding gums. "Although the prevalence of tooth loss has declined over the past few decades, it still is a significant public health problem that will continue to affect the baby boomer generation in the United States," Dr Bobadilla says.
THE DIABETESPERIODONTAL DISEASE CONNECTION If you are diabetic, you know that high blood sugar levels put you at risk for problems with your kidneys, eyes and heart. In addition, diabetes causes your healing process to be slower and compromises your resistance to infections; this increases your susceptibility to developing periodontal disease. These two factors make treating periodontal disease in diabetic patients more difficult and accounts for why gum disease in diabetics may be more severe. Here's some good news, however: According to the American Dental Association, while on the one hand high blood sugar does create a risk for periodontal disease, on the other hand, treating gum disease can help diabetics control their blood sugar levels.
PREVENTING TOOTH LOSS Losing teeth to periodontal disease does not have to be your destiny. Understanding the disease and its risks can motivate you into taking action. Visit your dentist for regular exams and professional cleanings, and make sure to update your dentist on your diabetic status, including your blood sugar levels
and any new medications you may be taking. Call your dentist right away if you have any of the following symptoms: Red, swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath, difficulty chewing, receding gums or sensitive or loose teeth. An impeccable oral care routine can help you prevent periodontal disease. Brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily is a must. Be sure to replace your toothbrush every three to four months, since toothbrushes harbor bacteria. Also, your dentist may recommend a prescription-strength, anti-microbial rinse, such as Colgate® PerioGard®, to help you fight gingivitis and promote gum healing. Work with your dentist to develop a specific plan to keep your mouth healthy. When your periodontal health is good, your blood sugar levels are much easier for you to control, and vice versa. You don't have to be another tooth-loss statistic! For the study, the researchers looked closely at data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2003 and 2004. Information about the oral health exams and the diabetes status of 2,508 survey

participants, 50 years of age and older, were evaluated by the researchers. The results of the study showed that 28 percent of people with diabetes had lost all of their teeth, compared to 14 percent of people who did not have diabetes. The study authors listed longterm gum disease, tooth decay and cavities as the primary reasons for tooth loss in adults. People with low income and less education were more likely to have complete tooth loss, which may have to do with access to proper dental care. Only 19 percent of people who never smoked had total tooth loss, compared to 43 percent of smokers. People with diabetes who had lost some, but not all, teeth were missing
an average of 10 teeth, compared to 7 teeth for people without diabetes. "These study results revealed that adults with diabetes are at higher risk of experiencing tooth loss and edentulism (complete tooth loss) than are adults without diabetes. One of every five cases of edentulism in the United States is linked to diabetes," the authors concluded. The results of this study were consistent with results found in two other large studies that looked at tooth loss among people with and without diabetes. The authors suggested that healthcare providers work to educate patients with diabetes about the importance of oral health care in this high-risk group. This study gives additional support for the

As a result, it is vital for people to go through basic periodontal screening at least once a year so that a thorough inspection of periodontal tissues can be achieved.' An Australian study last year found women with gum disease took an extra two
months to get pregnant compared with women with healthy teeth and gums. It took around seven months on average for women with poor oral hygiene to conceive, but just five months for those who brushed their teeth properly. Other researchers found a link between high levels of dental plaque, or bacteria, and cancer death up to 13 years earlier than expected.

Hallandale Beach Public safety is the most critical function the City of Hallandale Beach provides to our residents. The City Commission is committed, and I look forward to our enhanced planned public safety initiatives. We continue to offer career advancement to our existing public safety staff. As you may already know Chief Sonia Quinones came up through the ranks to become the Police Chief she has devoted her entire 20+year career to our community. The City Commission has advocated and funded innovative methods to ensure
the public safety staff has state-of-the-art training tools and equipment. I am happy to say together with the backing of our City Commission, we are the only city in Broward County to acquire the “Shoot-Don’tShoot� simulator training module. Essentially, public safety staff will have a simulator room that will help personnel train adequately for reallife scenarios, protecting both the public and our officers. Police Officer recruitment is underway. We are looking for 7 outstanding new officers. If

What this “scam” to save lives did was bring out greed in communities who were blinded by the revenue the cameras were bringing in - and paid little attention to what a waste of energy they were. “Any city that has red light cameras is in it for the money,” April Truitt of Miami Beach North pointed out. “You pay your officers to patrol the streets and ticket offenders - like it has been forever. It is a rip-off that any city that has it now should get plenty of opposition from its residents. It’s a money maker that does nothing to curb accidents.” Lance Hollis of Hollywood has researched the very subject in three south Florida area communities - at heavily traveled intersections - and he has his own statistics that will stand behind the facts. In over 30 hours of sitting in a lawn chair at those intersections over 6 months, Hollis came upon
with his own, firsthand information, pointing to red light cameras working just the opposite of what many “proponents” have pushed in all of our faces for a long time. “First of all, the most important thing to this study, or the one done by Harris Myers in northern Florida, is that motorists are so consumed by being stuck in the intersection by a red light, they cause more rear-end crashes than ever before,” Hollis explained. “I saw three happen right in front of me.” Hollis also said that trying to beat the crosswalk countdown clock into the intersection is another huge factor in accidents. “Drivers are not driving anymore,” Hollis said.

Omelettes Have Arrived As A Filling Main Entree
Chicken, steaks, seafood, pork and just about every other kind of entree pretty much takes up our dinner menus each and every week. But what about an alternative - like an omelette? We have some delicious choice for you to try:
MEAT LOVER’S OMELETTE • 1 teaspoon clarified butter • 1 ounce pork sausage • 1 ounce turkey • bacon lardons • 2 large shrimp, • roughly chopped • ¼ cup green • onions, diced • 3 eggs • ¼ cup goat cheese • 1 teaspoon honey • kosher salt and • freshly ground black • pepper, to taste • ¼ cup shredded • cheese (or optional • amount) 1. Bring a non-stick pan up to high heat, add clarified butter and swirl around pan until the sides are
coated. 2. Add shrimp and meats into heated pan, stir using the handle or a spatula and let cook for approximately 2-3 minutes. Add half of the chopped green onions to the pan. 3. Whisk three eggs in a small bowl until the mixture is consistent and aerated. In another small bowl, mix the goat cheese with the honey. 4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and pour the eggs into pan over the meat and let sit. Season with salt and pepper. Once the sides of omelette begin to rise, take a rubber spatula and pull in the sides of the omelette towards the middle allowing the remaining egg mixture to cook. 5. After approximately 45 seconds, flip or turn omelette and cook the other side for another 45 seconds. 6. Turn off heat and sprinkle the cheese and apply 2-3 knobs of honey goat cheese to one half of the omelette. 7. Slowly slide the cheese-covered half of the omelette onto a plate and, using the pan, fold the remaining half onto itself. 8. Garnish with the remaining chopped green onions.
ASPARAGUS AND GOAT CHEESE OMELETTE • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon butter • 3 to 4 asparagus • spears • 3 eggs • 2 tablespoons • crumbled • goat cheese • Salt and pepper Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Rinse and cut the dry ends off the asparagus then place on a baking sheet, drizzle with a small amount of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until just tender. Remove from the oven and cut into 1-inch pieces. Crack eggs into a large bowl and season with salt and pepper, whisk well. Heat a 8 to 10-inch non-stick frying pan to medium low heat. Add the butter and allow to melt until it bubbles. Add the egg mixture and allow to
set for about 10 seconds then use a fork to stir the egg mixture, gently lifting and moving the cooked egg so any liquid mixture goes beneath it. After about 30 seconds, the egg should have formed and be uniformly cooked, but still moist. Add the goat cheese and asparagus. Fold the omelet over onto itself and serve immediately.
SOUTHWESTERN OMELETTE • 2 large eggs • teaspoon coarse salt • 1 teaspoon olive oil or butter, for pan • ½ cup shredded • pepper Jack cheese • 2 tablespoons salsa • 1 tablespoon packed • fresh cilantro leaves In a small bowl, whisk together eggs and salt until frothy. To make omelette, add olive oil or butter to heated pan. Fill with cheese, salsa, and cilantro leaves.
Baked Corned Beef Omelette • 8 large eggs • 1 cup heavy cream • ½ teaspoon • Lawry's • • Seasoned salt • 1 3-ounce package • thinly sliced • corned beef • 1 cup grated • mozzarella cheese • 1 tablespoon green • onion - chopped • Preheat oven to • 325 degrees Beat eggs, cream and seasoned salt together. Tear corned beef into small pieces and add to egg mixture. Stir in cheese and onion. Pour into greased baking dish (8x8x2 inches works great). Bake uncovered 45 minutes or until omelette is set and top is golden brown. This recipe has roughly 5 grams of carbs per serving.

Senator Book is a former classroom teacher, best selling author, venerated child advocate and environment preservationist. Her father, Ronald Book, is a lucrative Florida lobbyist with political influence. In addition to an amazing silent auction and fabulous dinner, the theme of the event is to create awareness about the role of the Lauren's Kids Foundation, a non-profit organization formed by Senator Lauren Book and Ronald Book.
