A truly eye-opening experience for patient Deborah Pennington
Local families coping with travel decisions President Trump’s ban against seven countries hits home to several locals By Larry Blustein @sfsuntimes@aol.com Little did many residents of the United States believe that less than two weeks into his presidency, Donald Trump would do something that would affect the world. For those who live in South Florida, and felt that anything that our new president would do - would never reach any of us for years - would be wrong. His travel ban including Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia and Yemen may have been words to some, but for those who have families and are from any of those countries, it has been a nightmare. Ronnie Morris married a woman from Syria 11 years ago. With business and family in the United States and in Damascus, you can imagine how this family has been coping with a ban that caught everyone by surprise. Morris explained: “The worst thing was that my wife and two children left for a week - and now cannot get back. That is the most heart-wrenching part of this. Innocent and hard working people who are balancing incomes in two countries and depend on those incomes have been stripped.”

“As soon as I mentioned what I needed done, Dr. Roger Nydick immediately told me about the Braverman Eye Center and Dr. Stanley Braverman, right, who performed his own cataract procedure. He told me that Dr. Braverman was amazing and the surgery that he chose to correct his cataracts and severe farsightedness, which required Tecnis Multifocal Lenses, was a major success.” DEBORAH PENNINGTON For much of her life, Deborah Pennington was resigned to the fact that her eye sight would really never improve. Wearing “thick” glasses since the third grade, this 62-year-old Fort Lauderdale hospice nurse, really never knew anything more than blurry vision in one eye - and average vision at best in the other. Spending much of her life on dosages of steroids for an arthritic condition, which had taken a toll on the eyes, it had been a challenge at times, but she learned to live with what she had and prayed for the best. “When you can’t even see the LARGE E on the eye test chart, you know that things are not great,” Pen-
nington recalled. “It was something that I had learned to live with.” Through the years, Pennington would get used to her vision problems, compensating for what she could not see. But with her nightly paperwork, travel schedule and the use of steroids, her problems started to worsen when she developed cataracts. The onset of the cataracts was accelerated by the steroids. As her condition worsened and the need to address cataracts in both eyes, Pennington was looking for someone who could at least take care of her condition before things really got to a point

Atlantic Village puts Hallandale Beach directly in the spotlight This mixed-use shopping, dining and entertainment destination already has major tenants La Estancia Argentina and Doggi’s Arepa Bar among others
You may have noticed the way Hallandale Beach has become more progressive over the past year - and nobody has recognized that more than developer Elias Be-
naim. With a surge in residential construction taking place throughout the area, a state-of-the-art commercial center was needed. That’s where
Benaim, Group Eco and Atlantic Village comes in. This 32,000 squarefoot upscale shopping, dining and entertainment

Developer Elias Benaim stands in the center of what will be one of the most progressive mixed-use shopping, dining and entertainment destinations in Hallandale Beach.

Atlantic Village puts Hallandale Beach directly in the spotlight
Just the look and appeal of the development is enough to stop motorists in a hurry. With 12-foot high windows, two stories and not your average “cookie cutter” layout, this is indeed something that took a lot of planning - to maximize the space.

destination is taking shape along U.S. 1 - right in front of Mardi Gras Casino, and it will be one of those places that could indeed be the start of making a new city center and meeting place. “When we picked out the property and made plans for what was going to be constructed there, it was mutually decided that it had to be special enough to be that destination,” Benaim explained. “We wanted to be different. We wanted people to talk about what we have going on here.” When completed in late 2017, Atlantic Village will be a centerpiece that will not be your average strip shopping center. Located right between Hollywood and the always progressive City of Aventura, this is exactly what Hallandale Beach needed to add to what is already in place. Just the look and appeal of the development is enough to stop motorists in a hurry. With 12-foot high windows, two stories and not your average “cookie cutter” layout, this is indeed something that took a lot of planning - to maximize the space. “We are targeting everyone,” he pointed out. “With what we have planned over the next year, along with some of the other unique properties in our community, this is going to be very special.” There’s Plenty To Love Located right along heavily traveled US 1, Atlantic Village offers something that no other property can provide. Besides being a mixed-use complex that will offer office and commercial space, the architecture and views are amazing and something that will grab the attention of the thousands of motorists who pass by the property. “I am excited because what we all talked about when
coming up with this total concept, is now coming together quickly,” Benaim said. “We have two anchor restaurants already in place - I’m happy to report that we signed the deal with the "well known and exclusive high end cigar lounge & bar" - "Man Cave Cigar Lounge & Bar" - with a large prime selection in humidor; with exceptional inside and outside seating. They also signed a lease for 2,000 plus square feet plus an outdoor space to bring the night life to the plaza.” “In addition, we are under negotiations with a gym, juice bar and nationally-recognized hamburger restaurant,” Benaim added. One of the first to come aboard was La Estancia Argentina. This is a unique Argentinean bistro-style restaurant, where every dish has been designed according to a classic heritage. Since 2001, they redefined the concept of Argentinean grill; passing on their passion for food and drink. La Estancia Argentina has a casual ambience and blends with the regional cuisine, offering an incredible experience. In addition to the great fresh meats, cut the way you like it; house made chimichurri; bread; gourmet cheeses, sandwiches and the perfect wine selection, this 3,000 square-foot dining experience also has an outstanding bakery with homemade sweets & pastries. The other destination will be the now famous Doggi’s Arepa Bar. This former hot dog food truck turned brickand-mortar was so successful in its street days, that it needed a permanent location to cater to more people. Its overwhelming menu features everything from burgers and pepitos, to salads, BBQ and even fresh juices, all in true Venezuelan fashion. There are 23 different kinds of arepas at Doggi’s, which is based on the values that were taught at home, as Love and Respect became a theme on the menu and the way they treated their customers. “This area has never had restaurants like these two,” Benaim said. “Outstanding food, service and the overall
atmosphere at all the places will be worth the drive.” Being Involved In The Community A member of the Greater Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce, Benaim and Atlantic Village wanted to be part of the landscape of the community. They always want to make sure that they do their part to make Hallandale Beach and the surrounding areas special. “We are so excited to have such a progressive and unique development going up in our own City,” said Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper. “This will be a gateway to our community. One that will have the appeal that will attract so many new visitors.” Grupo Eco Already In Hallandale Beach Grupo Eco is not new to Hallandale Beach. The first project was the 7th Avenue Village, a 25,000-square-foot commercial center at 701 West Hallandale Boulevard. The center is already very popular with nationally-recognized tenants such as Wingstop, State Farm, Marco’s Pizza, Wells Fargo and T-Mobile retailer. Into The Future As Phase 1 is taking shape, phase 2 - which will feature an office tower that you will be able to see from blocks away - as well as warehouse and commercial space as well. It is all going up very fast. “Hallandale Beach is the next area for organic growth. I’m a strong believer in this City, pointed out.”

The history of Hallandale (Beach) is rich and has had plenty of pioneers By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - What does history mean to a city? Coming from up north, I was surrounded by history. I was born in Trenton and raised in Levittown, PA. This was minutes from where Washington crossed the Delaware. One of my first full time jobs was in the “City of Brotherly Love,” home to the Liberty Bell and many other national treasures. Every city has history including Hallandale Beach. It may not have the significance of Washington Crossing or the Declaration of Independence, but it is important to the fabric of our community. History can disappear, if it is not preserved and protected. You need to know where you came from, to figure out where you are going. Our City has been focusing on preserving its history over the past years. The push started with former Vice Mayor Bill Julian. He helped to spearhead the preservation of the Curci House. He also pushed to establish our Historical Committee. Commissioner Sanders worked with many residents to ensure that Foster Park included the rich history of our historically segregated black community. The preservation of the accomplishments of residents from the past, sets a proud example for many of our future generations. Hallandale Beach has come a long way from the tomato fields and salt marshes, to what it is
today. We need to preserve what we can of this past. One of the costliest items when it comes preserving history, is saving old buildings and maintaining them. We are fortunate that we have three such buildings here in Hallandale Beach. The Curci House, The Old-School House which happens to be the oldest in Broward County and The Moffitt House. The Curci House was preserved through a public/private partnership with Shanco Construction. Rather than tearing down one of the founding families homes, it was saved and the City granted a land use change. The Old-School House has been used over the years. It was part of our DPW compound and used as a union meeting hall. After years of research, it was found that it is the oldest school house in Broward County. Both sites were fully restored under the supervision of historical experts and brought them back as close to their original condition, as they could have been. The Moffitt House is also the home of one of our founding families. The Moffitt’s were one of Hallandale Beach’s earliest settlers. The family owned and developed a significant portion of Hallandale. J.W. Moffitt was a Broward County Commissioner from 1935-1937and founded Moffitt Realty. The Moffitt family lead the drive to
change Hallandale’s corporate designation from “town to City.” Based on historical data, photos and literature, the Moffitt Family resided in the home located at 134 South Dixie Highway in 1906.The home was built in 1906 and the style of the home is of Florida Vernacular, which is time correct to 1906. The Moffitt family resided in the home for three generations. As a matter of fact, we have a street name after the Moffitt Family. This home was also donated from its original site and moved to the Curci Village by truck, to make way for Shanco’s home office on Dixie Highway. The home was moved and we as a commission, have worked to make sure it remains a part of history. Over the past years, we have been working to evaluate what the costs would be to fully restore the existing building. We have been working to fund this project as well. It was finally included in the Parks Bond, which was approved by our residents. The bond also includes ADA upgrades for access to the Curci House, so everyone can access the second floor. The process to get expert inspections and bids was hit with many delays. After the evaluation of the building came forward, it was found that there were three structural problems and other issues with regard to
restoring the trusses and the windows. We debated whether we should spend over $650,750 to fully rehabilitate the building or spend $482,330 to fully replace it. Due to costs and the final proposed use of the building, we voted to replace the building with an exact replica. Last week, we were ready to approve the final contract to move forward with the replicated building and the interior renovation to create rooms depicting the three generations of the Moffitt family that founded our City and lived here. I was fortunate enough to know one of the Moffitt daughters; Jocelyn Moffitt and Betty Joe Patterson. Neither of these ladies had children and were the last living family members. Regretfully, the item was postponed. If you feel the way I do about preserving our City’s history, please share your thoughts with me via e-mail or letter. I also welcome the opportunity to come to your next meeting to review our budget and other City issues, anytime. Call the above number to schedule an appointment. As President Trump had already warned that this was going to happen, it still caught Mora Hollywood ris, resident and father of three, off guard and has put his wife and children in a very tough position. “My 9-year-old daughter stayed back here because she has work in school - and to try and explain all this to her and why her brother, sister and mother are not home, is hard,” he explained. “She knows about things that happen in Syria from communicating with her grandparents and cousins, but this is something that she never thought would happen to her family here.” The travel ban, while being challenged and lifted, is an indication that all those things that President Trump talked
about before the election, is starting to come true. While many have challenged how the countries were chosen, since none have been thought of as a major threat to the United States, it has put everyone on edge. Ali Miller still has family in Yemen. Even though she has been in the United States for 22 years and married to an American, she feels that this country is treating her and the entire family like trash. “I have been more productive in this country, working and raising a family than just about anyone I know, and because I happen to have been born somewhere else and have family, I am suddenly nothing,” she explained. “But
even though this administration is trying to do their best to tear everyone apart, it won’t happen. Not in my family.” Miller tears up when talking about how this country, once perceived as the land of opportunity, now being hated by everyone across the world, and she is indeed angry. “President Trump is so worried about building walls and stopping everyone from coming in, maybe he should deal with the mental health problem they have in this country,” she pointed out. “Look at those terrible mass murders and they have nothing to do with who is coming into this country - at all.” As the ban was lifted and each side continued to battle, missing in
all of this is the way the rest of world is starting to look at the USA. Even “The Boss,” Bruce Springsteen had to tell an audience in Australia that he was “apologizing for our country - and that he was embarrassed!” South Florida happens to be a place where business is done and relationships are made from all over the world, so when something like this ban happens, or ill feelings are shown toward Muslims, it truly destroys everything this nation has always stood for. Dania Beach business owner Arnie Castro is one of those who simply cannot understand why President Trump would sabotage the relationships with so many countries to come
up with just seven countries - most have not been associated with high-scale terrorism. “I have the kind of business where we work with dozens of countries - in and around the Middle East - to promote Southern Florida as a tourist destination,” Castro said. “Even though we get very few people from these countries banned, other nations that have good relationships with those are standing up against what is being done.” While everyone understands that this ban will be lifted, they also realize that President Trump will not stop until he gets what he wants, and for people like Morris, Miller and Castro, that is only more reason to be concerned and
worried. Federal Judge James Robart, a George W. Bush appointee, who presides in Seattle, halted the enforcement of Trump's order last Friday night, effective nationwide. Robart, ruling in a lawsuit brought by the Attorney General of the Washington and Minnesota, states who sought to stop the order, said the states "have met their burden of demonstrating that they face immediate and irreparable injury as a result of the signing and implementation of the Executive Order. He said the order adversely affects residents in areas of education, employment, education and freedom to travel.

School Football Showcase. This free one-day event will bring together academically qualified seniors from Florida, and football coaches from NCAA Division II, III and NAIA programs across the country. “We had so many young men who got it done in the classroom and on the football field and are still looking,” said Mater Academy head coach Rocco Casullo. “You feel bad for these young men who have done what was asked of them and still have nothing.” The event, which will be held at Nova Southeastern University, will run from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and provide yet another exposure opportunity for the student-athletes. While many of the schools that usually head south for the small college recruiting will be on hand, they will be searching for studentathletes. Those eligible for participation must be graduating high school seniors and have not accepted a scholarship offer from a NCAA Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision) program. “There are very few events such as this one that are available to the kids,” West Broward head coach Monte Dilworth. “By having athletes who have achieved a GPA of 2.3 or higher in

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com As National Signing Day has come and gone for the Class of 2017 and attention has turned to the 2018 class, there are still football prospects – very good football prospects – who are still without a place to go. Athletes who did exactly what was told of them when they first entered high school. If you put the work in on the football field and in the classroom, you would have the chance to get to that next level – and in some cases – have your tuition paid. What has happened, is very good football prospects, are slipping through the cracks. The same cracks that get bigger and bigger every year – with college coaches now getting more looks at some of these postseason allstar games and recruiting fairs. As many are beginning to give up hope of playing college football, the Orange Bowl is coming through with a February 25th showcase event that will give those qualified seniors yet another look – in front of college coaches, scouts and recruiting services. GFWC Hollywood Women’s Club Honors Hermine Vogler 2016 Volunteer of the Year Hermine Vogler came to America, on a visitor’s visa, at the age of 19, planning to stay 3 to 6 months. She sailed from Hamburg, Germany to New York and from there to New Haven, Conn., where she stayed with relatives.
Besides a framed certificate and flowers, Hermine Vogler received a charm bracelet with a bicycle charm for the fabulous bicycle holiday give-away program she initiated. Hollywood - At the Hollywood Women’s Club December Day and Evening Meetings, President Carol Fitzgerald and former President Isabel Wise recognized Hermine Vogler on behalf of the Club for her many years of dedication, commitment, leadership, and service to others. Besides a framed certificate and flowers, Hermine received a charm bracelet with a bicycle charm for the fabulous bicycle holiday give-away program she initiated. Hermine Vogler came to America, on a visitor’s visa, at the age
of 19, planning to stay 3 to 6 months. She sailed from Hamburg, Germany to New York and from there to New Haven, Conn., where she stayed with relatives. She met a friend’s son, who was graduating from Yale University who was looking for a prom date. The totally unexpected happened: they fell in love and changed her 6 months’ visa to permanent status. She married, lived in New York until her husband finished Law School, and then moved to Miami, Florida. She settled into the happy life of a young wife and then
Mother. It was a neighbor who introduced her to the GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) Northeast Junior Women’s Club in Miami. Looking back today, THAT was a lifechanging event for her. Growing up in a small town in Germany, she had been involved in sports, theater, and chorus and Church groups. But what she experienced with the Northeast Juniors Women’s Club was totally new. These young mothers were devoting so much of their little spare time planning and working on projects to raise funds for the improvement of life in their community, and at the same time enjoying the camaraderie and friendship with likeminded women. It was the “Junior’s” where her lifelong friends were made. Her “American social education”, especially about contributing however one can as an individual, in order to accomplish the plans and goals for the entire club.
When her children were grown, she started a new career as a Tour Director, travelling throughout the USA and Canada when she decided to downsize and move to Hollywood. Eventually, she made her way to the Hollywood Women’s Club on 14th Avenue. “I remember driving around and around. When I entered the building, it was packed! It was card playing day, always a good fund raiser and obviously very popular.” She fell in love with the quaint, little building in the middle of a residential neighborhood. She also met an old friend. Somehow she felt right at home and became a member in the year 2001. Her new friends expressed a desire to continue to meet on Thursdays (first Thursday every month at Noon) throughout the year. Hermine took on the leadership of this now called HWC DAY GROUP. Now in its 8th year, the Day Group has over 35 member. Some members attend
the Evening Group (2nd Wednesday of every month, 6pm) meetings as well. Meetings include time to socialize followed by interesting programs with diverse speakers. Members participate and volunteer for HWC’s community service projects and have strongly contributed to the fundraising efforts for the restoration of the National Historic Clubhouse, which was built in 1927. Seven years ago the Day Group started a fund drive they named the “HWC Bicycle Project”. Annually they raise funds in order to purchase bicycles during the holidays for deserving and needy students in the City of Hollywood’s schools. The first year there were three. Sweet treats just in time for Valentine’s Day Chocolate Melting Cake, Strawberries and Syrup - and Chocolate Pudding • 1 pound strawberries (about 20), • washed and patted dry Line a baking sheet with wax paper. In a microwavesafe glass bowl, microwave the chocolate, stopping and stirring every 30 seconds, until melted and smooth. Holding a strawberry by the stem end, dip it in the melted chocolate, letting the excess drip off, then transfer to the prepared baking sheet. As you set the strawberry down, slide it ½ inch to the side to prevent the formation of a chocolate “foot.” Repeat with the remaining berries. Refrigerate the strawberries on the baking sheet until the chocolate is firm, at least 30 minutes
One of greatest food holidays is Valentine’s Day. Romance, good food, the tasty beverage of your choice and a dessert that will make you brag to everyone. As we approach this special day, we are looking at some of the delicious desserts that will take center stage with that someone special. Try some of these tempting recipes.
spoon until well blended. Divide the batter evenly into 8 muffin tins and bake until the cakes have just cooked through, about 15 minutes. The cakes will still look a bit moist on top. Remove from the oven and let cool 5 minutes. Serve warm with the caramel sauce and ice cream.
Chocolate Melting Cakes • 10 ounces semisweet or bittersweet • chocolate, chopped • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter • 5 eggs • 1/2 cup sugar • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/8 teaspoon salt • Caramel sauce • Coffee ice cream
Strawberries and Syrup • 2 pounds strawberries, hulled and halved • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier, • cognac, or fruit brandy • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream • 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar Place the strawberries in a large bowl. Simmer the granulated sugar and 1/3 cup water until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the Grand Marnier. Pour the syrup over the strawberries and toss. Beat the cream and confectioners' sugar in a medium bowl until soft peaks form. Divide the strawberry mixture among individual bowls and top with the whipped cream.
Heat oven to 325° F. Lightly coat a 12-cup muffin tin with vegetable cooking spray. Melt the chocolate and butter in a large bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove from heat. In another large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar at medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Add the flour, baking powder, salt, and melted chocolate. Mix with a
Chocolate-Covered Strawberries • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
Chocolate Pudding • 1/4 cup sugar • 1/4 cup cornstarch • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder • pinch kosher salt • 2 cups whole milk • 4 large egg yolks • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • Whipped cream, for serving Set a fine-mesh sieve over a medium bowl. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, cocoa, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk, then the egg yolks. Cook the milk mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly, until thickened to the consistency of mayonnaise, 7 to 8 minutes. Continue to cook, whisking, for 1 minute more. Remove from heat and pour through the sieve into the bowl, pushing the mixture through gently with a rubber spatula or spoon. Add the butter and chocolate and stir until melted. Mix in the vanilla. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pudding and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 2 days. Before serving, gently stir the pudding to loosen it. Serve with the whipped cream.

Emilio & Gloria Estefan receive ‘Joe DiMaggio American Icon Award’ at a recent fundraiser Hollywood – They have won 26 GRAMMY Awards, sold hundreds of millions of records, and paved the way for some of the most successful Latin musical artists of all time. Now, Emilio and Gloria Estefan can add the Joe DiMaggio American Icon Award to their illustrious resumes. The Estefans were recognized by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation at a recent fundraiser attended by nearly 1,000 people. The award is given annually to those representing the values for which Joe DiMaggio stood and contributions that have influenced American society. Previous winners include former U.S. President Bill Clinton and basketball legends Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Pat Riley, president of the Miami HEAT. “Emilio and Gloria are global treasures that South Florida is fortunate to be able to call our own,” said Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE, president & CEO of the Memorial Healthcare System. “Their body of work, in and out of the music business, has positively impacted more people than can be counted.”The American Icon Award event, held at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, raised more than $750,000 for programs, services, and facilities for kids and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The Estefans, also the first couple ever honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, first rose to international superstardom in the mid-1980s with the Miami Sound Machine. With Emilio managing his wife’s career, chart-topping success as both an English and Spanish-language recording artist followed for Gloria, making her the most successful crossover performer in Latin music history. The duo also influenced a generation of Hispanic superstars that followed, including Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Jon Secada, Marc Anthony, and Ricky Martin. Married since 1978, the Estefans have two children, Nayib
and Emily, and have also enjoyed great success as entrepreneurs and philanthropists. DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Joe (www.jdch.com) -- the largest pediatric hospital serving Broward, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation -- 2 Palm Beach, and northern MiamiDade counties -- has 224 licensed beds, seven operating rooms, and an entire floor dedicated to pediatric oncology. The stand-alone facility, part of
the Memorial Healthcare System, combines advanced technology, the expertise of some of South Florida’s most diverse, board-certified specialists, and a patient and family-centered focus to heal the body, mind, and spirit of those it touches, regardless of their ability to pay. The nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation provides philanthropic funding to support the children’s hospital’s mission.

A truly eye-opening experience for Deborah Pennington Braverman From Page 1A
McKeesport, Pa. where she couldn’t see at all. When asking around what doctor would be best to treat her condition, Pennington had to look no further than her own office and Dr. Roger Nydick. After all, it was Dr. Nydick who had cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants done not too long ago. “As soon as I mentioned what I needed done, Dr. Nydick immediately told me about the Braverman Eye Center and Dr. Stanley Braverman, who performed his own cataract procedure,” Pennington explained. “He told me that Dr. Braverman was amazing and the surgery that he chose to correct his cataracts and severe farsightedness, which required Tecnis Multifocal Lenses, was a major success.” Because the popularity of Dr. Braverman and the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach, Pennington admitted that she expected to walk into an assembly line and not have that personal attention that every patient, especially those with an eye condition, love to have. She was surprised! “I cannot say enough about the entire process; from the office staff to the way Dr. Braverman went over the entire procedure with me in our initial visit,” Pennington explained. “Because I had this poor vision for so long and never expected to see perfectly, the only thing I was concerned with was that my good eye would not worsen.” With so many patients going to see Dr. Braverman and coming away with such outstanding results, Pennington was just hoping that her results would be positive and maintain the vision she had. But it got better. Much better! After having surgery in the first eye and noticing a dramatic change this past September, Pennington was simply blown away by the entire experience. Then, in October, when she went back to get her “bad” eye done, it was like her life had been given back to her. “From the first time I met Dr. Braverman and the staff, it was evident that my perception about a large office assembly line was way off base,” Pennington said. “Everyone had time for me - and was there every step of the way to answer and comfort.” And, after the second eye was done, she couldn’t believe what she was actually seeing. For the first time in a long time, she didn’t have to rely on her husband to drive her around at night, and things she never knew were there before, we’ll, let’s just say, miracles do happen. “In the days after my second procedure, something happened that I never thought would occur,” Pennington explained. “I saw images as clearly as anything I had ever seen before. It was amazing that my eyesight was better than it had ever been. I can honestly say that it was a miracle.” What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser As-
The Braverman Eye Center is located at: 1935 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009. www.bravermaneyecenter.com. sisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman's newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser System, for unsurpassed Femtosecond Laser Assisted cataract surgery performance. About Dr. Stanley Braverman Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is also an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Nova Southeastern School of Optometry. In addition to treating patients, Dr. Braverman, a board certified ophthalmologist, has been a medical researcher, and is the inventor of several eye surgical instruments, and author of many articles for medical journals. Dr. Braverman's newly trademarked LACE™ procedure (Laser Assisted Cataract Extraction) provides the best possible cataract surgical results. He has lectured at professional meetings about upgraded lens implants, advanced cataract surgery and LASIK, both nationally and internationally. Ask Dr. Ron: How to deal with ‘Morning Depression’ Dr. Ron.., I have bouts of depression first thing in the morning. Upon awakening I lament about all the sadness I have known in my life, and worry about all that may come. I usually can shake this off by midday, but waking up has become miserable. I have a strong dislike to drugs, and was wondering if you know of any non medical approaches that might be helpful? Depression can present itself to those it afflicts in many different ways, with various symptoms. For example, some people may feel sad, but not suicidal, some people may feel hopeless, but have no problems in sleep or appetite, while the reverse may be true for others. Depression may be mild, moderate or severe, and episodes may last from weeks to months, or more… One interesting aspect of depression that needs more research, is time of day and depression. Morning depression is something I have seen quite a bit in my practice. It appears that many people suffer from, negative, obtrusive and obsessive thoughts right upon awakening. These thoughts are not necessarily restricted to negative events that are occurring in the present, but also may include repetitive worries of the worst yet to come. It is a miserable way to start off one’s day, and it suggests the inclusion, to some degree, of obsessive-compulsive disorder…. There are: however, some interventions that can help. People suffering from morning depression plagued by catastrophic thinking may want to try the following suggestions. Start off the day with a little prayer.., even if you are not religious.., even if you’re an atheist. Let the prayer contain in it the most positive thoughts and feelings you can think of…, don’t question it…, just do it. If the negative thoughts keep coming, use some imagery.., that has the power to block all negative and unwanted thoughts…, and then, get busy. Do something to occupy your mind. Plan your day.., do a cross-word puzzle, put on some pleasant music and dance if need be, or exercise. Fight back, don’t let negative thinking program your day. Do your best to feel in charge, and get busy. Do the best you can
Tips to make goodbyes better for both parent and child (BPT) - As a parent, you've probably experienced the clinging, clutching and crying that often accompany a goodbye when your child returns to day care or preschool after a long holiday break. Separation can be difficult for both children and their parents. Remember, separation anxiety is perfectly normal and can start at any time during the first three years. The challenge of separation can vary greatly depending on your child's age, developmental stage, temperament and environment. But there is relief. Child development experts agree families can learn how to ease separation anxiety and manage transitions by developing a predictable routine between the parent and/or caregiver and child - a consistent way to say goodbye. Saying goodbye helps your child You may be tempted to sneak out and avoid a scene, but that only tends to make your child more anxious. Creating a con-
sistent and predictable routine will help ease separations that are painful for both of you. The repetition of a goodbye routine will help your child develop a sense of security and facilitate a smoother transition from your presence to your absence and back again. "Neuroscience has shown that the consistency and predictability will help your child learn to anticipate your return," says Dr. Victoria Simms, child development specialist and president of the Simms/Mann Institute. "It's very important for young children to have experiences that promote security. Consistent routines leave a positive imprint on the brain that will help set the stage for easier transitions during times of separation." • Create your own consistent goodbye routines and rituals. • Bring a familiar object from home. •Comfort yourself. When you're comfortable and calm, your child will feel less anxious and

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, RN Health and Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach. “The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.” Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish. Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom
Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring. As we all know, our folks are very precious and we need to put them in the best hands possible. I highly recommend the team at Always Classic Care. They have been extremely accomodating and allow terrific flexibility in schedule as per mom’s changing needs. They were even able to make arrangements for the aide mom loved to return to her after the three months we had mom in Ohio this past summer . Always Classic Care has offices in three counties and is prepared to meet all your care needs.
