Health insurance takes center stage - again! With the new administration moving into place, this has become a national priority By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com When the election was held back in November, and the results were not what many had hoped for, many just felt that the impact would not hit locally for quite some time. But, while local politics pretty much dictate your daily life, the one thing that came out of the race for president was the future of healthcare, and that is something that many of us are being affected by.
Are dental implants safe?
President-elect As Donald Trump gets set to be sworn in on Friday, there are many who are worried about high premiums, soaring drugs costs and what will happen if things get out of hand. On Saturday, while having coffee, overlooking Hollywood Beach, Alex Wood, Cathy Moran and Jane Thomaselli from Hallandale Beach and Dania Beach - sat down to talk about the very topic that will soon dominate every conver-
sation. What the three moms worried about the most, was how to maintain the premiums that have gotten out of hand. It has come to a point where many are working just to pay for the insurance. “This is really something that everyone needs to worry about, Wood said. “We are now faced with paying for health insurance that many of us cannot afford.” Insurance, Page 9A
“Being 62 and having to worry about coming up with tremendous premiums and out-of-pocket expenses for the many medications I am taking, this all worries me a lot.” JANE THOMASELI DANIA BEACH

Yes, and they allow you to keep your teeth where they belong – in your mouth Are dental implants safe? Yes, and they allow you to keep your teeth where they belong – in your mouth Proven safe and effective at replacing missing teeth, contemporary dental implants have been in use for more than 30 years. Dental implants are typically made of titanium, a biocompatible material that is accepted by the body and serves as a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Your natural bone locks the implant into place by fusing, or attaching itself, to the implant. This process, known as osseointegration, gives teeth replaced using implants the stability and strength to support replacement teeth, withstand daily use, and function like regular teeth. Dental implant surgery is one of the safest and most predictable procedures in dentistry when performed by a trained and experienced dental implant dentist. A dental implant is the strongest device available to support replacement teeth, and it allows your re-

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. event really hits close to home this year in Hallandale Beach By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale - This past weekend, the Community Civic Association and the City hosted the Annual Scholarship Breakfast and the MLK Parade and Festival. It was an honor to speak at the breakfast to discuss my views on how do we all get through the City, state and national transitions. What would Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. do if he was still alive? We cannot be sure, but in my opinion he would tell everyone to organize peaceful protests. Just like many people are doing around the country this weekend. The Women’s Solidarity March is taking place in DC. There is also one in Bayfront Park and in Palm Beach. I plan on attending the one in Miami. If you would like to join me, let me know and I can send you the link. This is when we need to stand up against our rights that are being stripped away. On Saturday, I shared that these times seem like a bad version of the movie Back to the Future. I also spoke about how Dr. King handled a situation during a rally. His body guards counter a protester who came up to the stage seeming to harm him. Reporters watched as he em-
braced the young man instead. It turned out, he was a young Jewish man only wanting to thank him for standing up against hatred. I have been asked many times how I deal with such turmoil. Well, the short answer is, it is not easy and I pray a lot. When I believe a policy or action is wrong, I do stand up for my opinion and what residents share with me. Discourse and change will happen in a democratic society. There will continue to be plenty of discourse. We all need to look at the realities and the beauty of living in a free society. We all have different views and different ways of doing things. Only time will tell if these changes will be good or detrimental. We need to remember to hold those accountable for their decisions and stand up and get involved. Just like over 50 years ago, the many men and women that stood up in the face of violence. They stood up for what was right. It is like the saying “Bad things happen when good people do nothing.” After the wonderful day, regretfully Hallandale was struck by violence. Not at our City event, but along Foster Road at a private gathering. Our police officers had a large presence and were
monitoring the neighborhoods. It has been a long-standing tradition in many communities that families will BBQ and sell food and snacks during the day. Last year, we had one block where the party went into the evening. Neighborhoods complained and the crowd was dispersed. Our departmental direction was to monitor street gatherings and disperse them at sunset. Around 6:15 police heard shots fired, three people were victims and regretfully, one died at the hospital. The shooter is in custody. A full report has not been issued. In Miami Dade, a similar incident occurred where eight people were shot. It is terrible to think that after recognizing the great work of MLK, that these acts of violence are still occurring. We all need to come together and work harder to stand up against gun violence. For years, the US Conference of Mayors and Mother’s Against Guns have been lobbying for stricter gun laws. It seems, we have gone backwards on this issue. Rather than passing common sense gun laws, our state and national leaders want more guns in more places. Guns, healthcare, women’s rights
and public schools, are just a view of the institutions and laws that are under assault. There are certainly different ways of governing, but we all need to remain involved, so the great laws that have helped so many are not destroyed, but improved. Please remember this month’s meetings; Commission Workshop, CRA Board of directors and the regular meeting will be held the next week. On Monday, the workshop followed by the CRA will begin at 6 PM and the Wednesday meeting will begin at 6:30. ‘Synapse’ by Artist Jose Martinez Vanegas Showing at Hollywood’s ArtsPark at Young Circle Gallery is free. Synapse is inspired by the mythology and architecture influence of other times. By using a theme as old as mythology for inspiration, and adding his special touches, Martinez Vanegas achieves an updated, new vision. He quotes celebrated composer Giuseppe Verdi: "Tornate all'antico e sarà un progresso," which means "Let us turn to the past; that will be progress.” The artist’s fine and delicate drawings and paint-
ings feature great artistic detail and contemporary beauty. The technique of his art is mainly colored pencil on paperboard and acrylic on canvas. Martinez Vanegas seeks to have those who view his art “feel inspirational impulses” while admiring the secret meaning and story transmitted through his works. For more information regarding Synapse, please call the ArtsPark at Young Circle Gallery at 954.921.3500 or email jose_martinez_vanes@hotmail.com.

Bobadilla From Page 1A Strong and stable, a dental implant restores a lost tooth so that it looks, feels, fits and functions like a natural tooth. Other options can lead to bone deterioration, and may interfere with eating, smiling, speaking and other activities of everyday life. • Built to last. Dental implants are a long-term solution. Traditional, tooth-supported dental bridges only last five to seven years, and with proper care often more than 10 years, but at some point they may need to be replaced. While dental implants may need periodic adjustments, they can last a lifetime when properly placed and cared for over time. • Enjoy life without worrying about your teeth! No need to stay home or feel uncomfortable in public, embarrassed because your smile looks different, or worrying that missing teeth will limit your ability to join in the fun or those removable dentures or tooth-supported replacement teeth will loosen or fall out when you talk, eat or laugh. Teeth restored with dental implants are teeth that let you, not your teeth, lead your life. • Retain your natural face shape, and smile. A face without teeth can sag and appear sunken and sad. Dental implants allow you to maintain the natural shape of your face and smile. • Protect healthy bone. Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to additional health issues, such as the loss and dete-
rioration of some of your jawbone. When it is not being used to support a natural tooth, the jawbone deteriorates, losing its strength and firmness. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone, actually helping to stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss. • Keep your teeth in your mouth – not in a cup. Dental implants allow you to keep your teeth where they belong – in your mouth. And no more worrying that your dentures might slip or fall out. Brush, floss and care for teeth that have been replaced using dental implants exactly the way you would natural teeth – in your mouth. • Speak easy. Adjusting to removable dentures can mean struggling to pronounce everyday words. Not so with dental implants, which function like natural teeth. • Eat your favorite foods! Taste and enjoy the foods you love without hesitation. You can bite naturally, eat virtually anything you want and, unlike removable dentures that can feel uncomfortable, you can experience the full taste of the food you eat with dental implants, too. • Look Mom, no cavities! Cavities can’t occur in an implant-restored crown, or replacement tooth; however, you will need to visit your dentist as scheduled and clean and care for it and your gums and mouth every day, the same as you would if it were a natural tooth. • Keep teeth in place – silently. Dentures may slip when you eat, talk, smile, laugh, kiss, yawn or cough, so that you have to
“reposition” them back into place in the mouth. Dental implants are fixed in place and fuse naturally with your jawbone, meaning your replacement teeth won’t move, click or shift. • Protect your healthy teeth. Placing a tooth-supported bridge requires grinding away the teeth on one or both sides of the missing tooth or teeth – thereby damaging healthy teeth to restore those that are missing. The modified healthy teeth are attached to, and support, the bridge. Dental implants go in the jawbone, in the spot where your missing tooth root was, without impacting healthy teeth. They also help prevent healthy, adjacent teeth from shifting as they would if an empty space were left for an extended period of time. How do dental implants work? Teeth restored with dental implants look, feel and function just like natural teeth. You brush, floss and visit your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings, same as you would to care for a natural tooth. After meeting with a dental implant dentist to develop your treatment plan, the placement of a dental implant usually involves several steps: • The dental implant, usually a cylindrical and/or tapered post made of titanium, is placed surgically into the jawbone. • As you heal, your implant will osseointegrate, or fuse with, your natural jawbone, with the two growing together to form a strong and long-lasting foundation for your replacement teeth. This healing process can take
Page 7A
weeks to months while you proceed with your everyday life in between appointments. • Once the implant bonds with the jawbone, a small connector – called an abutment – is placed on top of the dental implant to connect the implant to the replacement tooth or teeth. • An individual tooth, an implant-supported bridge or dentures containing multiple teeth are then attached to the abutment. Why are dental implants often the first choice and a standard of care compared to other options to restore missing or damaged teeth? • Best thing compared to healthy, natural teeth. Strong and stable, a dental implant restores a lost tooth so that it looks, feels, fits and functions like a natural tooth. Other options can lead to bone deterioration, and may interfere with eating, smiling, speaking and other activities of everyday life. • Don’t go through life without worrying about your teeth! • Healthy bone. Greater professionalism could be the key to better hospital care (BPT) - Healthcare reform has been in the headlines for years, and it seems like the only point everyone agrees on is that something needs to be done to improve the system. While politicians debate who should pay for healthcare and how, a group of healthcare professionals, patients and community advocates have set forth new guidelines to help healthcare organizations take better care of patients and communities. At the heart of their proposal is the idea of improving professionalism in healthcare organizations. Funded by the Commonwealth Fund, the ABIM Foundation, The American Hospital Association, the Federation of American Hospitals, and Northwell Health, and published in the Jan. 11 issue of Academic Medicine, the "Charter on Professionalism for Healthcare Organizations" aims to encourage hospitals and healthcare organizations to radically change the way they operate. The authors acknowledge that the kind of sweeping changes they advocate won't be easy. No single healthcare organization can fully embody all of the described behaviors. Rather the Charter is aspirational. "Transitioning to the model hospital described by the Charter will challenge historical roles and assumptions of both leadership and staff," the authors write. Still, they say, making these changes can benefit patients, healthcare providers and organizations. The emphasis on professionalism In the Academic Medicine article, the authors acknowledge that both health care professionals and patients are caught up in a vast, difficult, rapidly changing and ethically challenging system. Professionalism can help providers and organizations with decision-making in such a fluid and challenging system, they say. "Professionalism is based on a specific set of principles and commitments that provide an orientation to the thoughts and actions of a given profession," the authors write. In 2002, a physician charter was published, establishing professionalism ideals for doctors. While physicians largely embraced the charter, they also reported that policies and organizational structures of the healthcare organizations they worked for and with were standing in the way of fully implementing the guidelines. Incorporating professionalism guidelines into organizational structures could help foster more professional, successful and patient-centric care for everyone, the authors say. Five key areas of focus The charter outlines five areas of focus for
healthcare organizations: • Greater involvement and partnership between healthcare organizations and the patients they serve. • Stronger partnerships between healthcare organizations and the communities in which they are located. • Greater attention to the well-being of healthcare workers to help reduce burnout, and make them better equipped to provide superior care for patients. • More collaboration between hospitals, government and community groups to positively affect the social factors that determine health. • Greater emphasis on ethical business practices that will improve patients' access to care, quality of care and hospitals' financial performance. Realigning priorities to patients Movement toward more ethical business practices may require the greatest shift in thinking, the authors admit. While the essential objective of healthcare should be to take care of people, the reality is "opportunities (exist) for healthcare providers and organizations to engage in activities that are not in concordance with the principles of medical professionalism," the Charter authors note. The Charter advocates that when a healthcare organization faces a choice between actions that benefit the organization or those that benefit the patient, the patient's interests should be the priority. "When ethical dilemmas arise from conflicts between an organization's self-interest and those of the community or patient, the community or patient interest takes precedence," the authors write. "While this premise of the Charter may seem controversial, it is central to its content, consistent with the seminal Physician Charter on Medical Profes-
sionalism, and the source of its greatest potential social benefit." Hospitals and healthcare organizations should take patient-centric steps to: • Protect patient privacy and health information, especially when using electronic health records. • Establish systems to identify and address conflicts of interest and, when they affect a patient, put the patient's welfare before that of the organization. • Be transparent about the cost of procedures and care. • Make bill adjustments for uninsured patients so that they don't have to pay substantially more than those with insurance. • Fairly grant "charity status" to patients who can't pay for treatment. • Be flexible in settling patient balances that exceed a patient's ability to pay. To review the full Charter, visit the website of the Foundation for Medical Excellence at www.tfme.org.

Because the insurance companies are on a much different page than the pharmaceutical businesses, the consumer is getting hammered, and frankly, many cannot keep up with it. Moran is a cancer patient, and as many who have to take “specialty medication” - the costs continue to rise - and that has put many in a situation where nobody is standing up and speaking out. “The crazy part of it all,” Moran pointed out, “is the very fact that the drug manufacturers are not on the same page with the insurance companies, and that is indeed a problem for her and the many who are going through the same things. “We all were kind of forced to get the Obamacare, whether it fit us or not,” Moran said. “To tell you the truth, I am scared about what’s going to happen with a new president calling the
shots to make things worse.” Indeed, even though he was elected primarily because of his business sense and skills, and being able to work out deals, President-elect Trump is not trusted by many, especially those who did not vote for him. As we are on the eve of his inauguration, President-elect Trump has conveyed that there is a plan in the works to replace Obamacare with a plan that would envision "insurance for everybody.” Even though Trump did not give specifics about his proposals to President replace Obama's signature health insurance law, the plan was nearly finished and he was ready to unveil it alongside the leaders of the Republican-controlled Congress. “Being 62 and having to worry about coming
up with tremendous premiums and out-of-pocket expenses for the many medications I am taking, this all worries me a lot,” said Thomaselli. “I cannot hang on every whim that the new president is throwing at us. This is my life. It’s reality and things are getting less and less affordable.” As local municipalities search to help lower taxes and make things easier in cities and communities in Northeast Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward, they have no control on health costs. As we are in perhaps the best region of the country for medicine with state-of-the-art hospitals, medical centers and elite physicians, it’s tough to boast when you are barely being able to make payments on premiums and finding out that deductibles are wearing all of us down. The plan, from what
Hall of Famer Nick Zito Saddles 2,000th Winner Nick Zito saddled the 2000th winner of his career Monday at Gulfstream Park, where Forever Plus registered a gate-to-wire victory under Nik Juarez in the second race to help his Hall of Fame trainer reach the milestone. “The way these young trainers win 4000 and 5000, I feel like the oldest guy in Little League,” said the 68year-old trainer following a winner’s circle ceremony marking his career milestone. Forever Plus, sent to post at 3-1, held gamely to prevail by a head in the 1 1/16 mile turf race for $16,000 claiming fillies and mares. “It feels great. It’s been a long journey. Thank God, were probably at the top of the stretch, where we still have a quarter of a mile left. That’s what we’re trying to do, keep it going,” Zito said. Zito’s horses have earned nearly $110 million during a training career that began in 1972, when he saddled Palais for his first victory at Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania after serving as an assistant to John Campo and LeRoy Jolley. Zito’s 2000 career victories include a pair of triumphs in the Kentucky Derby (G1) with Strike the Gold (1991) and Go for Gin (1994), as well as successes in the Preakness Stakes (G1) with Louis Quatorze in 1996 and the Belmont Stakes (G1) with Birdstone in 2004 and Da’Tara in 2008. He also captured the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in 2003 with Bird Town. Zito also enjoyed Breeders’ Cup success with Storm Song (1996 Juvenile Fillies) and War Pass (2007 Juvenile), both of whom were honored with Eclipse Awards. The native New Yorker was inducted into the Hall of Fame in

They do a good job with everything – horsemen, fans – so I appreciate that. This thing happened here, and I’m happy for that,” Zito said.

He also saddled back-to-back winners of the tradition-rich Triple Crown prep in 20102011 with Ice Box and Dialed In, respectively. Stephen Got Even’s victory in the 2000 Donn Handicap (G1) is also among Zito’s many career highlights at Gulfstream. “The Florida Derbys were special, and the Donn isn’t a bad race either,” Zito said. “I’ve had a lot of great memories here and hopefully we’ll keep it going.” Other Zito-trained graded-stakes winners

all of us are being told, include "lower numbers and much lower deductibles.” Trump boasted that: "We're going to have insurance for everybody. There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can't pay for it, you don't get it. That's not going to happen with us." One of the key things that Trump said in the interview over the weekend was that he would target pharmaceutical companies over drug pricing and insist they negotiate
directly with the Medicare and Medicaid government health plans for the elderly and poor. “While everything Mr. Trump is saying is great, what about the millions and millions who have the Obamacare coverage right now,” Eric Brown of Hollywood challenged. “You just can’t all of a sudden switch without a sound backup plan. That would crush a lot of people who bought into the Affordable Care Act.” Since Obamacare
was passed back in 2010, Republicans have called Obamacare federal government overreach and have sought to undermine it in Congress and the courts since it was passed by Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. “No matter what the new administration does, it can’t be a lateral move,” Thomaselli pointed out. “Throwing away something without a cost-cutting to the consumers would be a waste of time.”

Make healthy eating a priority for the year ahead Ingredient substitutions and smart food swaps can make a huge difference (BPT) - Creamy sauces, cookies, casseroles and cakes - as temperatures drop, it's natural to crave favorite comfort foods. However, it's easy to overindulge on rich dishes and decadent desserts, especially if you're hosting a gathering of friends and family. How can you enjoy amazing foods while bumping up the health quotient? "Remember, when you're cooking or baking, you're in control. With a few smart ingredient substitutions and food swaps, you and your guests can enjoy favorite dishes and get more vitamins and nutrients," says Lyssie Lakatos. Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames, both registered dietitians, are known as the "The Nutrition Twins." Together, they share their favorite strategies for cooking healthier, including clever ingredient swaps you won't even detect in the finished dish. Eggs: When baking, eggs are a common ingredient, but not all eggs are created equal. Opt for Eggland's Best eggs, locallysourced eggs that come from hens fed an all-vegetarian diet consisting of healthy grains, canola oil and supplements like alfalfa and vitamin E. As a result,
they have 10 times more vitamin E, five times more vitamin D, three times more vitamin B12, two times more omega-3s, 38 percent more lutein and 25 percent less saturated fat compared to ordinary eggs. Sour cream: Swap fullfat sour cream for plain Greek yogurt in recipes, dips, sauces and garnishes. Plain Greek yogurt tastes surprisingly similar to sour cream but offers higher levels of protein. Butter in cooking: Cooking smart means choosing healthier fats and using them in moderation. Instead of butter, try olive oil. While 1 tablespoon of butter has about 7 grams of saturated fat, olive oil only has 2 grams of saturated fat. Butter in baking: Oil can cause baked goods to
get soggy, so a better butter alternative is applesauce or pumpkin puree for half of the called-for amount. The addition of applesauce or pumpkin puree reduces the fat content while keeping baked goods moist and delicious. Bacon: Bacon adds flavor to any dish, but a ton of fat. To get the flavor-boost of bacon without the excess fat, try using Canadian bacon, lean prosciutto or turkey bacon. Whether it’s beside scrambled eggs for breakfast or crumbled into a casserole, these tasty alternatives will satisfy. Salt: Use less salt and add herbs to recipes to get succulent flavor. Whether fresh or dried, herbs satisfy the palate and add beauty of any dish. Have fun mixing and matching herbs to customize a recipe perfectly
to your taste. Sugar: All those amazing glazes and desserts require sugar, but you need not rely solely on refined white sugar. For baked goods, lessen sugar and add vanilla or cinnamon to intensify sweetness. For glazes, try alternatives like maple syrup or fruit purees. Breading: Classic comfort foods often require breading. For a healthy alternative to traditional white bread crumbs, try wholegrain bread crumbs, rolled oats or crushed bran cereal (or a mixture of them all.) Flour: Rather than using entirely all-purpose refined white flour for recipes, try swapping half of the amount with whole-wheat flour. You'll still get the desired consistency out of baked goods, but you'll be eating more whole grains.
Lettuce: Iceberg lettuce is a popular option for salads and recipes, but to get more important vitamins (and more flavor), use arugula, collard greens, spinach, kale or watercress instead. Insider tip: try buying a bag of mixed greens to enjoy a variety of nutrient-dense alternatives. Want to start your day out with an indulgent, satisfying breakfast that features some of these smart cooking ideas? This recipe serves as a great breakfast and has vitamin-packed Eggland's Best Eggs, sweet potatoes and turkey bacon. For more recipes visit www.egglandsbest.com. Stuffed Sweet Potatoes • 2 Eggland's Best • eggs (large) • 2 sweet potatoes • 2 strips turkey bacon • 1/4 cup shredded • cheddar cheese • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1 tablespoon extra • virgin olive oil Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Wash and scrub your sweet potatoes. Place on a baking sheet, pierce each potato a few times with a fork, and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Place in the oven and roast for 45 min-
utes. When sweet potatoes are finished, slice them in half lengthwise and let them cool. Scoop a bit of 'meat' out from the sweet potatoes to make room for the filling. In a small nonstick skillet over medium heat, place two strips of turkey bacon. Cook until bacon begins to brown and crisp up. Place a napkin on top of a small plate. When bacon is finished, place onto napkin to let grease soak out. Rinse the skillet and place back on the burner over medium heat. Place eggs in skillet and cook on medium-low for just a few minutes; ~3 minutes. Be sure not to overcook these eggs as they will continue cooking after removed from heat, and will be placed into the oven later on. Break eggs into four equal parts. Place each into the hollow parts of the sweet potatoes. Sprinkle each with salt and pepper. Break bacon apart with your hands into small pieces. Sprinkle over the eggs. Sprinkle cheese over top. Set your oven to broil on high. Place potatoes in the oven and broil for three minutes or until cheese is melted.

Martin Hoffman helping to energize the up and down real estate market When it comes to the real estate market, there are many opinions on what the current state happens to be. No matter what side of the fence you sit on buyer or seller - there are some good and bad things to like about what lies ahead. For the past 30 years, Martin Hoffman has been successful in the business because he listens and looks out for his clients every second of the day. The Hollywood resident, who grew up in Montreal, does have a sense for what works in the industry. That comes from being around it all of his life - with his entire family in real estate. As the page turned on
another year, and we head into 2017, there is reason to be optimistic, nobody has and preached that more than Hoffman, who represents the Keyes Company. “Today you have to be progressive and be able to use social media as a huge asset,” Hoffman explained. “My extensive market knowledge and being able to put the client at ease have been vital during some of the tough times we have gone through.” By having a tremendous website: martinhoffmansellssouthflori da.com and by watching and listening - Hoffman has helped to make dreams come true for so many - even during tougher times.
With knowledge in all of South Florida - from Boca Raton to Homestead, ground zero for Hoffman has become Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Dania Beach and surrounding areas. That strong home base gives him the opportunity to stay very busy. Because of his community ties, many knew of his business savvy as an owner and operator (1996-2008) of Leadership Realty in Hollywood, which he sold to The Keyes Company. Another key to his success has been the ability to get repeat customers by being honest, hard working and always telling the truth. That formula has been the reason for the success.
“Customer service has always been the backbone of this business,” Hoffman pointed out. “That was what intrigued me when watching my family do this so well.” If you need to talk about anything when it comes to the real estate market, that dream home or even hockey, give Martin Hoffman a call at The Keyes Company (954-605-4832) or via EMAIL: MartinHoffman@Keyes.com. • SEE MARTIN HOFFMAN’S ADVERTISEMENT TODAY ON PAGE 9B.
