LASIK EYE SURGERY Two Generation’s Experience By Abigail Freeman - Aventura Digest
My family has been cursed with terrible eye sight, a frustrating and crippling handicap. I can honestly not remember ever seeing without some sort of glasses or contacts, but all of that changed with Dr. Braverman--for the second generation in my family. I first learned of LASIK eye surgery at the age of twelve when the technology was very new. My father, who also had incredibly bad eyesight, visited Dr. Braverman to learn more about the procedure, and ultimately, underwent Lasik surgery with fantastic results. I remember that
he and my mother went to Dr. Braverman’s office one day, came home later that night, and then when I came downstairs the next morning, my father, who had always worn thick, coke-bottle glasses, was reading the newspaper without anything over his eyes. He went from being handicapped with bad vision to having perfect sight! The results were truly remarkable. From that moment on, I hoped to be a candidate for the procedure that changed my father’s life, and 13 years later, I was. This past November, I made an appointment with Dr. Braverman to explore Lasik. I
figured that my prescription seemed to have stabilized, and I started having some trouble with my contacts; I was getting frustrated with wearing contacts day-in-and-day-out, and found that the more I looked at a computer screen, as is a necessary evil in the workplace, the more my eyes hurt at the end of each day. I had finally decided that this was as a good of a time as any to see if Lasik would be a possibility for me. After a fairly short exam I learned that I qualified for Lasik, and then, after another round of testing, I scheduled a surgery late in December. Dr. Braverman’s

incredibly kind, patient, caring, and beyond professional. I could not have had a better experience at the Braverman Eye Center. I truly felt that I was in the best

The comic rekindles the halcyon days of sitting in Adirondack chairs watching an Indian summer sunset at a Catskill Mountain resort. Roman’s Monticello Memories lights up the stage with comedy and song and dance. Famed for his wellremembered challenge, “If Broadway couldn’t come to the mountains; he would bring the mountains to Broadway.” “The audience here tonight is the audiences from the Catskills,” said Roman who also referred to his own routine as the “angina monologues” Roman teamed up with the personable comedian Vic Arnell and the dynamic dance team, Two On Tap Melissa Giattino and
Ron DeStefano for a triple serving of entertainment for those who still believe comedy is king and tap dancing is hip again. Produced by Mazel Musical Inc. and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Monticello Memories kept audiences laughing with Borscht Belt humor, thirsting for egg creams and corn beef sandwiches on rye. The Aventura show is a revival of Roman’s “Catskills on Broadway” a revue which has been on tour for twenty years. Familiar to audiences through three decades of appearances on television talk shows, Vic Arnell has shared the stage with entertainers; such as, Barry Manilow and Gladys Knight and the Pips and currently appearing with Engelbert Humperdinck on his latest tour. City News Spring’s greatest showcase: the Centennial National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. (ARA) - There’s nothing more beautiful than the coming of spring after a long winter. As grass grows green and the air warms, nature puts on a spectacular show that manages to impress year after year. Nowhere is spring’s beauty more vibrantly on display than at the National Cherry Blossom Festival Celebration in Washington, D.C. This year marks a storied and once-in-a-lifetime event, the 100 year anniversary of the arrival of Japanese flowering cherry trees in D.C.’s West Potomac Park. Why tax time is the perfect time to plan for retirement

Before the big April deadline rolls around, most of us spend time gathering documents, reviewing accounts and meeting with financial advisors, and all of that effort is centered around getting a firm grasp on what you earn, save and invest. Consider this: Many of the same documents, papers and files you go through to complete your taxes are the same documents you need for assessing your retirement preparedness. Whether you’re just starting out or nearing retirement, knowing your level of readiness for retirement is critical to your financial well-being. Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to
moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision. This means that they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play most sports, and watch TV. One of the most celebrated operas, Rigoletto is the story of a court jester who enables the Duke’s philandering and mocks the husbands and fathers of the victims. When he finds his own daughter, Gilda, whom he has kept a well hidden secret, to be the Duke’s newest victim, he tries to repay evil with evil ending in tragic consequences. However, the Duke without being aware of who she is, has seen her, and unknown to her father, has fallen in love with her. Thus the opera has a plot, a central character of vital dramatic importance, and at least two other characters of strong interest. Rigoletto, the hunchback, not only figures in the opera, but has been vividly characterized by Verdi in his music. It is a vital force in the opera, holding the audiences attention. Rigoletto is a very distinguished opera. Composed in forty days in 1851, it still retains its vitality today. Q: Doesn’t my body make all of the omega-3s needed to help maintain a strong heart? Does Lung Cancer Discriminate? Addressing the Lack of Diversity in Lung Cancer Clinical Trials - Research shows that racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to develop cancer and die from it than the general U.S. population, but are historically underrepresented in clinical trials. As part of lung cancer awareness month, Dr. Coleman Obasaju, a frequent speaker on health disparities around the world, provides his take on the issue. Obasaju is a clinical and senior medical director at Lilly Oncology. (ARA)
Q: Why does lung cancer disproportionately impact minority populations? Obasaju: Lung cancer maintains its status as one of the most prevalent and deadly of all cancers. Approximately 200,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. this year globally this figure swells to about one million. This disease takes a particularly heavy toll on
African Americans. Despite their lower smoking rates, African Americans are more likely than Caucasians to develop and die from lung cancer. It is not clear why African Americans have a greater risk for developing lung cancer, but researchers believe it may be in part related to a person’s genetics, environmental and socioeconomic background. Q: Why is it so critical for minorities to participate in clinical trials? Obasaju: One way to get a better understanding of this situation is through increased diversity in clinical trials. Historically, minorities have been underrepresented. Several factors contribute to this, including a lack of awareness about the importance of diversity in cancer research. Economics, language and
cultural barriers, coupled with a historical mistrust of the clinical trial process, also contribute to the low rates of minority participation. Despite these challenges, we must continue to find ways to increase their participation. This change is vital to ensure researchers understand how lung cancer affects all populations and substantiate whether treatments are effective across all ethnic groups.
