The Aventura International Film Series continues with Birds of Passage on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. When an indigenous Wayuu family becomes involved in the booming Colombian drug trade of the ‘70s, greed, passion and honor collide. The ensuing fratricidal war will put their lives, their culture and their ancestral traditions at risk. Variety says, “Few films have captured quite so powerfully the tension between the old and new worlds — a feat Birds of Passage accomplishes while simultaneously allowing audiences to channel the Wayuu’s surrealistic view of their surroundings, where spirits walk the earth, and wise women interpret their dreams.” Not rated, this film is from Colombia with English subtitles. The Aventura International Film Series presented by the City of Aventura is hosted by Shelly Isaacs who introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Isaacs is founder, programmer and commentator for South Florida’s popular Café Cinematheque International
programs. Isaacs holds a master’s degree in Media Ecology Studies from New York University, where he served as an adjunct professor in cultural studies. Presently, he teaches foreign-language film appreciation in the Lifelong Learning Society at Florida Atlantic University and at Florida International University. He is the film expert for Celebrity Cruise Lines during their annual voyage to the Cannes International Film Festival as well as on other scheduled film-related cruises throughout the world. This film includes adult subject matter and is not appropriate for children under 12. Tickets are $12. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Getting Her Vision Back - Finally! A Lifetime Battle For Lydia Harris Comes To A Happy End With A Visit To Braverman Eye Center Hollywood - While many of us have stories to tell about our vision, Lydia Harris can fill several volumes with what she has gone through since the age of 4. While we can tell you that the 60-yearold south Florida resident had spring time cataract surgery to correct High Myopia and cataracts in both eyes - it’s the road that she climbed to get to the Braverman Eye Center in Hollywood that is something special. Before she got to see Dr. Stanley Braverman and his staff in their state-ofthe-art office - or be referred by her Optometrist Dr. Dan Llewellyn in Fort Lauderdale, who is the official eye doctor for the Florida Panthers - Harris had endured a lifetime of vision problems. “Since I was in pre-school, I wore glasses,” Harris recalled. “My eyesight got progressively worse through the years and even had to wear bifocals that looked like Coke bottles. It was not an easy childhood.” Through the years, there was always a struggle with her vision, and when she moved to Florida and started to see Dr. Llewellyn for her routine visits, there were fewer problems. But that all started to change last year when things began to go downhill. From the time Dr. Llewellyn suggested Dr. Braverman, Harris could see things

What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. “Since I was in pre-school, I wore Your optometrist or Dr. glasses. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure.
The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. MEET DR. ABRAHAM WAGNER: One of South Florida’s Top Podiatrists & The Master of Minimally Invasive Foot & Ankle Surgery
educated on all the latest technology being used to perform these intricate surgical procedures. Using the most state-ofthe-art surgical equipment and techniques, Dr. Wagner and his team at JAWS podiatry consistently deliver these services and provide patients with staggering outcomes that are rivaled by no other facility in the region. Dr. Wagner’s approach and philosophy to minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery is one which treats the foot with the same delicacy and attention to aesthetics as one would treat any other body part of the body. Just as plastic surgeons offer aesthetic treatments for other parts of the body, Dr. Wagner believes in doing the same for feet. Dr. Wagner’s minimally invasive procedures also provide a plenitude of benefits that traditional foot and ankle surgical procedures do not; such as less injury which results in less trauma, a lower risk of infection, limited discomfort, a faster recovery rate, and less scarring. Several foot and ankle ailments can be treated with minimally invasive techniques such as painful and aesthetically unpleasing bunions, hammer toes, excessively long toes, corns
or calluses, painful bone spurs, ankle and big-toe joint arthritis, heel pain, among many others. The minimally invasive procedures offered at JAWS podiatry significantly reduce the risks that are normally associated with surgery. And with a team as careful, meticulous, and knowledgeable as their own, a favorable outcome is certain. Dr. Wagner also works closely with Dr. Orlando Nunez, another prominent and acclaimed podiatrist and orthopedic surgeon who specializes and continues to pioneer in Minimally Invasive foot and ankle procedures. Dr. Nunez is an expert in the field of podiatry, having completed a three-year Podiatric Medicine and Surgery residence at Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami, Florida following his graduation from Rosalind Franklin University of Medical and Science College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. The City of Aventura and the Aventura Police Department will be hosting Ride with the Aventura Police, a bike safety and ride event to promote safe cycling practices. When and Where: Sunday, February 23, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. at Founders Park located at 3105 NE 190 Street. Various bike safety presentations will be provided and a limited number of helmets, bicycle lights and water bottles will be distributed before the bike ride starts. Participants will have an opportunity to ask the police questions about bike safety, get helmets fitted, learn about basic bike maintenance, join a bike rodeo, enter to win prizes, and speak with representatives of Aventura B-Cycle, the City’s bike-share system. The bike ride starts at 10:00 a.m. where members of the Aventura Police Department will escort the community along a safe bike ride within Aventura. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes for the ride. Riders should be able to demonstrate the ability to ride a bike safely on the road. Bicycle Helmets: Get the Right Fit An unexpected fall from a bike can happen at any time and has the potential to result in serious brain injury. The good news is that a properly-fitting helmet will reduce this risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more children age 5 to 14 go to hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with bicycles than any other sport. A child’s helmet must fit right NOW—do not buy a helmet for them to “grow into.” As a child’s head grows, you will need to replace the helmet. Everyone, including adults, should wear a helmet every time a bicycle is ridden. However, it is NOT enough to just wear a helmet. A helmet needs to fit properly in order to provide the highest level of head protection and
should always be worn with the chin strap fastened. Step 1: Size. Don’t buy a helmet without trying it on for size. Make sure the helmet fits snugly. While it is sitting flat on top of your head, make sure the helmet cannot move side to side. Sizing Pads: Sizing pads come with new helmets; use them if you need a more secure fit. You can remove the extra pads if your child’s head grows. Universal Fit Ring: If the helmet has a universal fit ring instead of pads, adjust the ring size to fit snugly on your head. Step 2: Position. The helmet should sit LOW on your forehead. There should only be one or two finger-widths above your eyebrow. Your child should be able to look upward and see the front rim of your bicycle helmet on your own head. Step 3: Side Straps. The left and right side straps should form a “Y” and meet right below your ear. The side straps may be easier to adjust if you take the helmet off your head. Roll the little rubber band as close to the side straps as possible to prevent slipping. Step 4: Chin Strap (Buckle). Buckle the chin strap. Tighten the chin strap until it is snug. No more than one finger should be able to fit under the strap. Take a look at the first image at the top of the post to see how this should look. Step 5: Final Check • Does the helmet fit right? Open your mouth really wide! The helmet should pull down on the head. If it does not, then refer to Step 4 and re-adjust the strap. • Is your helmet in the right position on your forehead? When looking up, you should be able to see the front of the helmet visor. For more info about the BIKE Ride, contact the Aventura Community Recreation Center at 305-466-3883.

HEALTH
Simple ways to help caregivers focus on their own wellbeing (BPT) - Caring for a loved one with a chronic illness is something millions of Americans do every day. Whether it is a parent, spouse, extended family member or friend, the stress of caring for another adult can take a toll. “I have to do absolutely everything for her,” explains Anthony Cowels, whose 71-year-old wife, Florence, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1986. As he watched her disease progress, his caregiver responsibilities grew. What’s more, for some of the years Cowels also cared for his elderly parents, compounding his responsibilities. “It has been a long journey of caregiving,” says Cowels, 70. “I try not to let it overwhelm me. I always look for ways to do better.” Cowels learned to care for both himself and his wife better through useful tools, education and friendship and by joining a caregiver support group. He says he can “interact with others who identify with my situation.”
Family caregiving: A growing trend Cowels represents a growing number
of Americans who care for older or aging loved ones. About 41 million family caregivers in the United States provided an estimated 34 billion hours of care to an adult with limitations in daily activities in 2017, notes the AARP report Valuing the Invaluable: 2019 Update. What’s more, as the population ages, caregiving demands are increasing while the pool of potential caregivers is decreasing. As the Valuing report states, “Americans will have more older relatives or close friends to potentially care for than children in about 15 years. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that, by the year 2035, adults ages 65 and older will outnumber children under the age of 18 for the first time in U.S. history. This fundamental demographic shift is the result of the aging of the U.S. population, increasing longevity, and a declining birth rate. “ Caring for yourself In addition to helping with self-care activities like bathing, dressing and going to the bathroom, family caregivers today often perform complex medical
tasks, including wound care, giving injections and handling medical equipment. The tasks that were once provided in hospitals and health care clinics are increasingly the responsibility of family and friends, who are often given little training or support. While many family caregivers often report positive feelings in their role such as a sense of purpose or connection with their loved one, it often comes with feelings of being overwhelmed. Exhaustion, worry, loneliness and financial stress are common challenges caregivers face. If you also work a fulltime job, it can be even more difficult to balance your needs and responsibilities. While you may not achieve perfect balance, it is important to prioritize your physical and mental wellbeing, so you can be there for the person you care for. These first steps can help you find some balance as you navigate your caregiver journey: • Join a support group. Ask your health care provider about local options.
Community centers are another good resource. If you live in a remote area or have difficulties commuting, online support groups are another useful way to connect with others in similar situations. • Make time for yourself. When you care for another person and have your own life demands, it can feel as though there is little time left in the day for yourself. Even if it is just 15 minutes, make time to do something you enjoy, such as walking or reading. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one person can do it all. It takes a team to care for someone, especially those with complex medical conditions. You can start by asking your provider about local health care resources and reach out to family and friends for assistance. It is important for family caregivers to stay mentally and physically healthy so they can provide the best care possible to the growing number of people who need support. For helpful tips and caregiver resources, visit www.aarp.org/ caregiving.

REAL ESTATE Self-care re-imagined: Achieve higher quality ‘me time’ in the bathroom (BPT) - The long-overdue self-care movement acknowledges what you’ve known for years: Taking time for yourself gets you in a better state of mind to handle your crazy life and tackle your long to-do list. A day off and a massage appointment are both acts of self-care that can work wonders on your stress. When the pressure builds and you can’t fit some time out into your schedule, incorporating self-care in your routine can also do a lot to restore your equilibrium. The perfect place to start is in the bathroom. If you’re like most people, the bathroom is a place to prepare for the major transitions of the day. So why not rethink the bathroom as a space where you’re performing a ritual to prepare your body and your spirit for the next thing? Introducing a ritualized mindset to your routine infuses positive purpose into your actions. Calibrate it to the right energy level for the next part of your day, so you’ll feel invigorated before heading into work, or soothed and relaxed before bedtime.
To inspire you, the following are ideas and upgrades for your daily self-care ritual. Adorn the space with flowers and candles: For centuries, fresh blooms and a flickering flame have been used to give spaces meaning and sacredness. Seeing the colorful flowers will give you a lift, and it will serve as a special reminder of the purpose of this time and space. As always, the low light of a candle can set a relaxing vibe. Make time for mindfulness: Bringing a meditative element to your get-ready ritual can quiet the chatter of the busy brain. With a little experimentation, you can find something that works for you. During your time, look for opportunities to be mindful and present. That means devoting your headspace to absolutely nothing but the aroma of your favorite body wash or the muscle soothing sensation of the warm water. Or, try pausing for a mindful minute, where you just close your eyes and focus on your breathing for 60 seconds or so. These actions can lower your blood pressure and help you get focused on what’s ahead. Luxuriate in the tub: Yes, a bath takes longer than the usual shower. But if you pay attention to what the research says about the benefits of hydrotherapy, it’s well worth the extra effort. A 2014 report published by the North American Journal of Medical Science shows how a warm water soak results in lower blood pressure and heart rate. Make your bath extra relaxing, lower the lights, play soft music, and add a handful of Epsom salts to the water, to create the ultimate self-care refuge.
