CITY NEWS around - seeing everything. “I cannot say enough about the staff at the Braverman Eye Center,” Dr. Cherrick explained. “My wife and I love Dr. Braverman!”
Dr. Stanley Braverman, left, with patient Dr. Henry Cherrick after a successful procedure in his Hollywood office.
A Dramatic Change In Vision For Dr. Henry Cherrick Retired Dean Of UCLA School Of Medicine, Seeing Colors For The First Time In 10 Years!
DECEMBER 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8
Hollywood - You will have to excuse Dr. Henry Cherrick if he spends more time than usual looking at the lake behind his home. For nearly 10 years - both of his eyes had started to develop cataracts - and while he really never noticed that things were going downhill - it took a trip to the DMV to change everything. He then realized that he had been slowly losing his vision “I knew I was having problems with my left eye,” Dr. Cherrick said. “When I failed the eye test to get my license renewed; that was it. Something had to be done - I was not living a quality life, not being able to see very well.” When his own ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Lane suggested he go visit Dr. Stanley Braverman at The Braverman Eye Center’s new state-of-the-art facility in Hollywood, it was indeed a lifechanging decision. “From the first time my wife and I met with Dr. Braverman, it was amazing,” Dr. Cherrick, 78, said. “He not only found that I needed to get my left eye done, but said I had cataracts in both eyes.”
Because of the pre-surgery workup (chest X-ray, EKG, etc.) that is required for cataract procedures, Dr. Cherrick opted to have both surgeries done within three weeks - and the results completely blew this one time dean of dental and medicine at UCLA, completely away. “I really never have had problems with my eyes in the past other than wearing glasses for the past 30 years,” Dr. Cherrick said. “Someone who was a pathologist like myself and constantly putting my eyes to use with a microscope, sharp eyesight has never been an option.” But even though he felt that his eye sight has always been okay, after the left eye, Dr. Cherrick’s opinion changed - in a hurry. “I have to tell you that having that left eye done was amazing,” he recalled. “From watching a video to going over all the scenarios, I was ready and anxious. The results were impressive - to say the least” with the Symphony Extended Depth of Focus lens implant. While it took just over five days to see things starting to
come into “focus” - Dr. Cherrick began noticing improvement immediately. In fact, on the sixth day, he started to see things like never before. “I could not recall ever seeing colors as vivid and sharp,” he said. “I also could read the paper without glasses, which I really had never been able to do. I was ready to get the other eye done.” I didn’t even think I had a cataract in my right eye until I had the left eye done and realized how poorly I was seeing out of the unoperated eye. The second eye surgery came three weeks later and after that surgery, life has never been better. He can now see colors vibrant and bold - and things that he never realized existed before - are indeed a major focal point. “I had worn a shirt for years and never realized it was blue,” he laughed. “I can sit outside all day and look at the colors and everything I never noticed before. I also find myself watching a lot of TV to see those colors pop out like never before.” With both surgeries out of the way, Dr. Cherrick and his wife are living a great life - and this time
What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional
Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up of the cloudy camera lens. This Femtosecond Laser Assisted Surgery reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser System, for unsurpassed

Anyone who knows Charles Calello would think his body is built of notes, instruments and scores, rather than bones, organs and skin. Looking at him you get the sense that he has a song playing in his head, one that fits every moment of the day, one that might be the next big hit. Calello’s passion for music led him to embark on his musical career at the young age of 18, just months after he graduated from Newark’s Arts High School in his home state of New Jersey. He took the first step of his musical Mecca when he began playing in local clubs, leaving the future to unfold quickly. In 1958, Frankie Valli strolled into a nightclub in Newark, New Jersey, and was astounded by a band of young musicians performing live. Already with a hit of his own, with his then group, The Four Lovers, Valli knew the music he witnessed barreling off the stage was anything but ordinary. He asked who wrote the arrangements for the band, and quickly shook hands with Charles Calello. During the next five years, while Calello was working as a musician and attending Manhattan School of Music, he and Valli developed a close relationship, which ultimately led to him becoming the arranger for “The Four Seasons.” In the early Sixties, The Four Seasons helped spawn a chain of hit records that catapulted the group to stardom and assisted in creating a sound that is still unique today (Jersey Boys). During those early years, Calello arranged and/or produced several other top ten hit records included, The Name Game, with Shirley Ellis, Blue Navy Blue, with Diane Renay, A Lover’s Concerto, with The Toys, and Lightning Strikes, with Lou Christie. In 1965-66 Calello replaced Nick Massi as the group’s bassist and became a member of The Four Seasons, and toured throughout that period. After years of success with The Four Seasons, Calello went on to accept a position with Columbia Records (Sony Music) as a staff arranger/producer in late 1966. After producing and arranging the nationally acclaimed record for Laura Nyro, Eli and The Thirteenth Confession, he left Columbia Records and settled into a career as an independent arranger, pro-
ducer and composer. In the late sixties he arranged Frank Sinatra’s Watertown album and the classic song by Neil Diamond, Sweet Caroline. He has worked with such diverse artists as, Al Kooper, Nancy Sinatra, Roberto Carlos, Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, Engelbert Humperdinck, Glen Campbell, Janis Ian, Barry Manilow, Juice Newton, and many others. In 1979 he had his own hit record with a disco version of “Sing, Sing, Sing”. In 1992 he became principal arranger and assistant conductor of the Boca Pops in Boca Raton and later held the same position for the Sunshine Pops Orchestra. Calello’s talent continued to produce Top 10 Hits over the years, earning him international acclaim. His discography includes over 100 Billboard chart records, 30 of which were Top 10 Pop Hits, 8 of which were nominated for Grammys. He has also scored more than 60 television shows, over 250 commercials, and five motion pictures. His creative ability and diversity are exceeded only by the timeless nature and renowned quality portrayed in the rare elements easily witnessed throughout every facet of his work. On Oct. 20, 2000, Calello was honored for his talent and artistic contribution to the music industry with an induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as one of The Four Seasons. Jersey Boys, a Tony award musical currently gracing the stage on Broadway, is about the life of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Since Calello arranged many of original songs that are used in the play he is mentioned and glorified in the Broadway hit. In addition to Calello’s work as an arranger and producer, he actively continues to write stellar musical performances for Pops Orchestras and live shows, conducts Pops orchestras around the country for various artists and performs his own “hit records” in concert with his own show. Charles Calello, a true legend in our time will be holding “An Evening with Jersey Boy Charles Calello and his Big Band” at the Aventura Performing Arts and Cultural Center Saturday, January 25 at 8 p.m. For tickets go to Aventura Center.org or call (305) 466-8002.

“Symphony In Lights” Dazzles Shoppers Every Night By Marylynne Newmark
DECEMBER 2019 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 14
For the fourteenth year in a row, The Village at Gulfstream Park has outdone itself with an annual extravaganza, this year Introducing its” Symphony in Lights”. On Opening Night, November 9th, thousands gathered to enjoy the splendor of the season kickoff. Aside from the spectacle of dancing lights synchronized to fabulous holiday music, there were live performances, warm welcomes… and of course, Santa! Emcee for the evening was Lynn Martinez, news anchor at WSVN-Channel 7, media sponsor for the event. She introduced principal representatives of the other sponsors that include Florida Power & Light, the City of Hallandale Beach and the YMCA of South Florida. At 6:30 on the 9th, triumphant seasonal sounds of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra heralded the flip of the switch for the magnificent “Symphony in
Lights”, a dazzling display of lights in motion choreographed to the music. Holiday music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra was selected because of its powerfully strong tempo, which added to the drama of the lights reflecting off the trees in The Village. During the evening, firstnighters enjoyed Christmas carol renditions from various choral groups, including the 50member Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, the 60-member Hallandale Magnet Marching Band, and a local band called Pulse, who performed a crowdpleasing mixture of music from top 40s to Latin to seasonal. That was then, but “Symphony in Lights” is ongoing. The extravaganza will continue with its synchronized music every night during the holiday season thru December 31st. Gulfstream principals reported that more than 250,000 LED
lights are covering the trees and nearby buildings in The Village. Recognized for their energy efficiency and cost savings, LED lighting has proven to be a safe and efficient way for excellent lighting, and has been encouraged for general and commercial use during the past few decades. “Using energy efficient LED lighting is a good way for homeowners and businesses to lower their costs,” says Juliet Roulhac, Director of External Affairs for FPL, “especially now during the holidays when bills can be higher with all the extra decorative lighting.” So obviously, this was a great choice for Gulfstream with the massive amount of energy that will be required during the next two months. “By using the LED option,” Roulhac says,“ FPL is able to provide billing that is about 30% lower than the national average.” She adds that FPL encourages their customers to save money with LED lighting
all year. As anticipated in previous years, thousands of South Florida residents and visitors are expected to participate and enjoy the spectacular display of lights and music throughout the holiday season, right up thru New Year’s Eve. “Gulfstream is a staple of our vibrant community,” says Greg Chavarria, city manager of Hallandale Beach. “Local festivals like “Symphony in Lights” help promote community unity and local pride. That way, businesses and residents alike are the beneficiaries. Sheryl A. Woods, CEO of YMCA of South Florida, agrees. “This extraordinary event gives organizations such as the “Y” an opportunity to introduce the YMCA as a community partner with the same goals of providing fun-filled activities for the entire family.” Of course, the merchants and restaurateurs at Gulfstream love
events like this. Mary Lee, owner at Christine Lee’s, a very popular Pan-Asian restaurant located in Gulfstream Village, is delighted with this wonderful splash of holiday warmth. She says, “We love being part of the Gulfstream community. Events such as this spotlight Gulfstream Village and generate tremendous traffic for the businesses. It’s a way for people who have never visited Gulfstream before to be introduced to our merchants and restaurants, and for regulars to enjoy the festivities.” This fun holiday happening is a “must” for visiting. Gulfstream Village is a great place to spend the day. There is much to see, shops to visit, activities to explore and a great choice of eating establishments to enjoy. The Village at Gulfstream at this time of year, with all its glamour and glitz, can be described in one phenomenal word… SPECTACULAR! Be sure to get your share of enjoying it.

Ready To Retire?

Get A Good Night’s Sleep After The Paychecks Stop Those early days of retirement can be exciting as you are finally rewarded with a little rest and relaxation after all those years of toil. But it can be a bit unsettling as well when the regular paychecks you counted on stop appearing in your bank account.
That’s why anyone who’s still a few years away from retirement should ask themselves: Am I ready for that moment both financially and emotionally? The answer could come down to whether you have a solid retirement plan – or a plan at all. “Regardless of how much you accumulate for your retirement, poor planning or lack of planning can put you at risk of exhausting your resources,” says Tad Hill, a retirement planner and author of Retire with Freedom: The Five Steps to Getting a Good Night’s Sleep After the Paychecks Stop (www.askfreedomfinancial.com). Hill says people nearing the end of their working years should follow this five-step process for a more secure retirement:
Put your situation to the “stress test.” With the help of a financial professional, give your retirement
Design your plan. Designing a retirement plan, Hill says, is much like creating the blueprint for a house. “These blueprints identify the strategies available to help minimize risk, increase certainty, avoid excess taxes and ensure an adequate retirement income,” he says. Some of the concerns that need to be addressed include income planning, investment planning, health care planning, tax planning and legacy planning. Build the plan. Once the design is agreed upon, it’s time to implement it. “That can mean making changes to your current structure, adding some things and getting rid of others,” Hill says. “Maybe risk-prone aspects of your current approach that we need to eliminate were discovered in the design step. We also often identify new strategies that you aren’t using that can really make a difference.” Seek continued guidance. Even a great retirement plan may need tweaks and adjustments over the years. “Times change, people change and situations change,” Hill says. With his clients, he holds a regular yearly consultation to help ensure they are on the right pathway to retirement success at all times. “You need to look at whether there are things that have changed in your life that need attention,” he says. “Are there decisions you need to make about a pension or Social Security? Is your spending tracking at the amount you thought it would?” “There are no guarantees of anything in life, including how your retirement will work out,” Hill says. “But taking action to create a solid and well-thought-out plan for this important part of your life is a critical first step.”

Create your ideal picture of retirement. What is it you want out of retirement? Do you want to travel? Volunteer with a charity? Spend time with the grandkids? The first step isn’t about your financial portfolio, Hill says, it’s about forming a clear image of the big “why” of your ideal retirement. “Otherwise, even though your money may last the rest of your lives,” Hill says, “you may never achieve your dreams because you’re unclear on your dreams.”
plan a “stress test.” That can include reviewing how to best maximize your Social Security benefits and examining how your portfolio might perform under a variety of market scenarios. “Analyze all the factors that could affect your retirement plan over the next few decades and create a strategy for dealing with those risk factors with as much certainty as possible,” Hill says.

Here Are The Key Points To Consider As many high school students prepare for college, millions of parents are hoping their younger children someday can do the same. With the high costs of college continuing to rise and many students and families saddled with heavy debt, saving for college has become as important as ever. Many people started savings plans early, while others either could not afford to or procrastinated. The bottom line, says financial professional Alexander Joyce, is learning all the options that fit with a family’s financial situation. “It’s never too late, but most people wish they had started sooner, and many don’t know what investment option is best for their college funding needs,” says Joyce, president/CEO of ReJoyce Financial LLC (www.ReJoyceFinancial.co m) and author of ReJoyce In Your Retirement: Everything You Need To Know To Get Everything You Want. “Be honest and realistic about the college part of your family financials, and from there you can decide on ways to get there in discussions with a planner.” Joyce says the following points should be explored and evaluated before going forward with a college savings plan: Your risk tolerance level. Before committing to a college savings plan, it’s important to determine how much you can afford to risk. “Just like anything in life, the higher the risk, the higher the potential reward,” Joyce says. “If you start very early you likely can go higher risk somewhere down the road. At the same time, risk tol-
As many high school students prepare for college, millions of parents are hoping their younger children someday can do the same. erance — and protecting your principal — is very important because college savings is a usually more conservative investment; it’s a targeted investment, meaning you need an amount of money by a specific date. The pros and cons of 529 plans. The 529 plan is an immensely popular college savings tool. Among the benefits are taxdeferred growth and taxfree withdrawals when savings are used for qualified education expenses. And as of 2019, individuals can contribute up to $15,000 per 529 plan, per child annually without triggering a gift tax. However, there are some disadvantages, such as limited investment options and a 10 percent tax penalty applied when money in the investment options and a 10 percent tax penalty applied when money in the account is used for non qualified education expenses. “The 529 has traditionally been the way for many families, because you hear about it the most,” Joyce says. “But if you’re getting a late start on college savings, this may not be the plan for you. You may have to play catch-up by contributing larger amounts, and you
also have a shorter window for seeing your investments recover from market volatility.” Non-traditional college savings plans. “One of the best things some people can do is look outside the box of traditional planning vehicles,” Joyce says. “There’s a big argument for adding an additional level of equities — some say you would be better off buying a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) to fund college. For example, with some funds averaging 10-15% in the market the last 10 years, those who did exceptionally well took more market risk, exposing the principal to loss or gain. On the other hand, perhaps try a Roth IRA — it could double as a college savings account as well as a retirement account. There’s no 10 percent penalty when Roth IRA withdrawals are used for qualified higher education expenses, but ordinary income tax may apply to any earnings withdrawn before the age of 59-1/2.” “When drawing a conclusion on a plan of action, stick to it the best you can,” Joyce says. “Consistency wins the race.”
