Lydia Harris Winning A Lifetime Battle With Her Vision With Help From Dr. Stanley Braverman, Her Life Has Indeed Changed - For The Better

DECEMBER 2018 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 8

While many of us have stories to tell about our vision, Lydia Harris can fill several volumes with what she has gone through since the age of 4. While we can tell you that the 60-yearold south Florida resident had spring time cataract surgery to correct High Myopia and cataracts in both eyes - it’s the road that she climbed to get to the Braverman Eye Center in Hollywood that is something special. Before she got to see Dr. Stanley Braverman and his staff in their state-ofthe-art office - or be referred by her Optometrist Dr. Dan Llewellyn in Fort Lauderdale, who is the official eye doctor for the Florida Panthers - Harris had endured a lifetime of vision problems. “Since I was in pre-school, I wore glasses,” Harris recalled. “My eyesight got progressively worse through the years and even had to wear bifocals that looked like Coke bottles. It was not an easy childhood.” Through the years, there was always a struggle with her vision, and when she moved to Florida and started to see Dr. Llewellyn for her routine visits, there were fewer problems. But that all started to change last year when things began to go downhill. From the time Dr. Llewellyn suggested Dr. Braverman, Harris could see things changing once again. By the time she had both of her eyes done in March and April, this is someone who was indeed sold. “The meeting with Dr. Braverman and his great staff was the beginning of something special,” Harris pointed out. “Every question I had, he had an answer for. I can’t talk enough about the procedure on both eyes and the way I was treated. A very positive experience.” In the months after the eyes were done, Harris is doing very well - seeing those street signs and everything better than ever before. As for Dr. Braverman, he said “Ms. Harris had two problems. She had cataracts, but she also had highly nearsighted eyes since birth. With today’s methods of cataract surgery, we are able to not only correct the cataract, but also, we can change the power of the crystalline lens so that nearsightedness can be eliminated.

What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and

may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultra-

sound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This Femtosecond Laser Assisted Surgery reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made clear lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser System, for unsurpassed Femtosecond Laser Assisted cataract surgery performance. 11-year-old pianist to bring high-energy show to Aventura Piano prodigy Jacob Velazquez, Child Prodigy on the Autism Spectrum, Presents an Evening of Beethoven. Jacob will be performing a solo concert on Jan. 9, 2019 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center in Aventura, FL, to benefit The Victory Center, a resource center that focuses on comprehensive, individualized programs in a classroom setting that provides intensive therapy for those on the autism spectrum. Diagnosed with autism at the age of 4, Velazquez was admitted to the National Musicians Guild just a year later, at age 5. By age 6, Velazquez was in the studio recording his first self-titled album, Jacob. The young prodigy has performed with the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra, the Sugar Pops Orchestra and the Imperial Symphony Orchestra and has appeared on Good Morning

America, The View, The Steve Harvey Show, The Harry Show, CNN, HLN, Telemundo, to name a few. After teaching himself to play drums by watching YouTube, Velazquez was invited to perform live with Harry Connick Jr.; he has toured with popstar Taylor Swift. “Jacob Plays Beethoven” is hosted by The Victory Center in collaboration with The Miami Piano International Festival and the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The Victory Center, which operates on donations, grants and tuition, is based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the science of human behavior. ABA is a scientifically proven, systematic approach to the assessment, treatment and evaluation of behavior, developing functional life skills, nurturing a greater command of language and decreasing maladaptive behavior, such as self-injury and aggression.

“This amazing evening will be an opportunity for guests and sponsor partners to come together to make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students and families affected by autism and other related disabilities,” said Raquel Pancer, chief executive officer. The Center for Disease Control reports one in 59 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the United States each year, a 15 percent increase since 2014. As the prevalence continues to grow, The Victory Center continues to advance a mission that fuels hope, education and opportunities for countless children and families affected by autism. Rated one of the top schools in the nation for autism, The Victory Center combines its highly effective intensive training with facilitated social interactions with the daily goal of helping students and their families reach their highest potential.

“We believe all children, regardless of ability, should have access to an exceptional evidence-based education within a nurturing environment, to thrive at their optimal potential. Jacob is a great example of this. He inspires not only those around him, but those who hear his music,” said Pancer. A unique learning environment in South Florida, The Victory Center offers a small handful of financial assistance for families in need through its Victory Scholarship Program. At times, the school absorbs the total cost of education to help families desperately in need. Sponsorships for the evening are available. Feelin’ Good A Salute to Michael Bublé Multi-talented singer/ dancer/actor/choreographer Rome Saladino will celebrate the stylings of Grammy and Juno Awardwinner Michael Bublé in Feelin’ Good – A Tribute to Michael Bublé at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on December 20th and return to the Boca Black Box Center for the Arts on December 23rd. (The show was a sell-out when it played at the Boca Black Box in April.) Saladino will sing the songs that made the popular singer-songwriter a world-renowned phenomenon. He will be accompanied by a seventeen-piece band at Aventura, and (due to space constraints) a sevenpiece band at the Boca Black Box, talented dancers, and special guest star

Cantor Geniene Shelley. “Many people ask me why I tribute Michael Bublé,” Saladino says. “Well, because, he truly brings ALL GENERATIONS TOGETHER! Other artists do amazing jobs in their individual styles and genres, but he brought back the music of the last 100 years and made it cool again!” Inspired by Bublé’s Jazzy Big Band style, Saladino will perform the hits that put the Canadian superstar on the charts – “Haven’t Met You Yet”, “Everything”, and “Home”, and will channel ‘Frank, Dean, Ray, and Ella’ with classics such as “Feeling Good”, “Come Fly With Me”, “Cry Me a River”, and “Sway. The evening will also include covers of The Beatles, The Eagles, Otis

LIFESTYLES they saw made them cry - daily. “I know why the Levy’s continue to do this - even after the tragic loss of their child,” she said. “When my niece was in the hospital, we saw so many people who could not pay for treatments for a child to at least make their time more comfortable. It tears away at you so bad.”

Ellie Levy. The inspiration for Ellie’s Army Foundation

Ellie’s Army Comes To The Rescue By Larry Blustein . Aventura Digest

With the holiday season upon us, many area families are celebrating and getting ready to ring in the New Year. The thrill of any holiday comes down to giving, and seeing the smiles on faces that will create memories to last a lifetime. For Stacey and Brian Levy, this is the time of year to reflect and bring awareness to their daughter Ellie Levy, who is the inspiration for the January 20th “Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon” - starting at the Aventura Library. Ellie Levy’s life was about teaching everyone about compassion and caring while suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF), a terminal genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs. What Ellie and her family saw, from the beginning, were people hurting - and it affected all of them in a way that many of us could ever understand. During Ellie’s many hospitalizations, Stacey and Brian Levy began to meet far too many parents struggling to keep their children alive due to limited financial resources. This is something that many in this

nation never have the chance to see - and convey it to those who may one day do something about a parent who can’t afford to pay for life-saving medications because they have no money for copayments, or for crucial nutritional supplements or necessary therapies, because they were not covered by insurance. Parents should not have to choose between keeping their child alive and paying their electric or mortgage/rent bills. So, in 2001, in response to what they saw and watch others endure, the Levy’s created the Reach for the Stars Foundation in 2001 to benefit individuals with CF. Fourteen years later, in March of 2014, Ellie was 22 years old and suffering from the end stages of cystic fibrosis. She received a double-lung transplant, but within a week, her new lungs were failing and she was re-listed for another set of lungs. Against all odds, she endured a second transplant on April 15th. During her recovery, Ellie met another young woman who also needed a lung transplant, but was unable to meet the

financial criteria to be accepted into the transplant program. In that moment, Ellie decided that when she was well, she would focus her efforts on providing other young people with the monies necessary to stay alive. Sadly, on November 5th, 2014, Ellie Levy passed away. In her honor, the memory of Ellie Levy indeed lives on - as her foundation name was changed to Ellie’s Army Foundation in 2017. The foundation has expanded its mission to assist not only those afflicted with cystic fibrosis, but children and young adults suffering from all critical illnesses. Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon - January 20 This is an event that many have rallied around. By taking part - as a runner/ walker - or just making a donation - you are helping those who cannot afford treatment that will save lives. Kathy Smith of Sunny Isles Beach fully understands that support that is needed financially and emotionally. Her youngest sister lost a child to CF, and the things

In addition to this fundraiser, Ellie’s Army Foundation assists with: Medical Assistance: They help pay for medical bills and insurance co-pays, therapies (i.e. respiratory, physical, occupational), nutritional supplements, and additional medical costs associated with a child or young adult’s specific needs. Emergency Expenses: Ellie’s Army Foundation also helps pay for mortgage, rent and utility bills in an effort to alleviate financial stress for families and provide a safe place for critically-ill children and young adults. Other items they cover include food, clothing, fund relocation and individual emergency expenses as they arise. Transplants: In order for many patients to be accepted into a transplant program, they are required to show proof that they have thousands of dollars in liquid assets. They provide these funds in order for children to have access to these life-saving transplants. Ellie’s Army Foundation always seeks to be as transparent about what your donations are applied to, and primarily spend their funds directly on helping those who need it the most. Why Dirty Socks? The inspiration behind the “Dirty Socks” event was Ellie’s surgeon (Gustavo), who told her in order to survive her lung transplant, she would have to walk. Despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked, often exceeding her surgeon’s expectations - and to prove her hard work, Gustavo wanted to see the bottom of her socks. If they were dirty, she was doing what was told. “Ellie gave her surgeon a bag with her dirty socks in it. He said that he will keep her socks in his office for the rest of his life. Ellie inspired him with her determination, her desire to live and her fight.” By taking part in the Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon, you are walking for those who fight the fight every day - and paying tribute to Ellie Levy, who helped to bring awareness to a disease that many knew nothing about. Chronic Back Pain Can Ruin Your Holidays The hustle and bustle of the holidays brings all sorts of activities to American households. While some complain about all they need to get done and the stress involved, there is joy in a lot of it, too – giving to others, family time, decorating, dining and sharing special memories. But for many people experiencing back pain, there is little, if any, joy. Lower back pain is the most common type of chronic pain in the U.S., and the holiday season, for many, magnifies how much they can’t do, and how much they are missing out on. “The emotional and psychological costs of back pain hit especially hard during the holidays, when it limits their participation with family and friends and in numerous activities,” says Bradford Butler, a chiropractor and author of The Blueprint For Back Pain Relief: The Essential Guide To Non-Surgical Solutions. “They want to get rid of their pain, but what matters most to

them is what the pain is stopping them from doing – many of the things they love in life.” Butler lists the various mental and physical costs of chronic back pain and how sufferers can limit or prevent them: Depression. “In many patients, according to the Mayo Clinic, it’s chronic pain that leads to a diagnosis of depression,” Butler says. “Sadly, too many patients are misdiagnosed with depression and put on very powerful and dangerous medications because of pain. Doctors are trying to say it’s depression causing the back pain, when in fact the opposite is true.” Time. Chronic, unaddressed back pain robs one of several aspects of life – lost work, lost quality family time, lost recreation time. And then, Butler stresses, there’s the danger of waiting too long to treat it. “The longer you have a back problem,

the more damage it will create and the more it will resist getting better,” Butler says. “There is a point of no return, when there’s nothing anyone can do to overcome the damage you’ve allowed by not dealing with it.” Surgery. “Surgery and prescription drugs are almost always the wrong choice,” Butler says. “Many patients who use these options don’t need them, and in fact regret them. They’ve had their lives ripped apart by back surgery and drugs, leading to divorce, lost jobs, bankruptcy. A combination of therapies boosted by the newest technology – chiropractic care, physical therapy and massage therapy – is often the best approach to their care.” Other organs, tissues. A damaged back or spine can affect multiple other areas. “Problems with the back and spine or nerves can be linked to many disorders – headaches, TMJ, hip pain, knee pain, and many oth-

ers,” Butler says. “Therefore, knowing where the pain is coming from and what best to do about it is paramount.” “Education is the key,” Bradford says. “You are respon-

sible for your choices, not your doctor. Question how the treatment plans he or she recommends will help you and how it will correct what’s causing the pain, not merely mask it.”

REAL ESTATE Why you must insure the ‘little’ things in life (BPT) - The gift-giving season is upon us once again! Whether you’re buying your loved ones a new pet, some fancy jewelry or the latest mobile phone for the holidays, one thing is for sure - these gifts come with costs and complications that can add headaches in the long run. For instance, new pets will inevitably need visits to the vet, electronic devices are often accidentally damaged, and

valuables such as jewelry, art or cameras can get stolen or misplaced frequently. Therefore, this holiday season, investing in pet insurance, device insurance and valuable personal property insurance is the thing to do, so that the “little” things in life do not turn into big problems when things don’t go quite as planned. Here are a few reasons why you should

consider insurance season:

purchasing this holiday

1. Pet insurance: Coverage is flexible and nondiscriminatory. A major bonus of pet insurance is the flexibility associated with it. For example, unlike health insurance policies for humans that often require you to use a specific group of providers, pet insurance policies allow you to choose the veterinarian you prefer. Likewise, pet insurance does not favor certain ages of pets. You can choose to begin insuring your pet at any time, whether that is at the time of adoption/purchase or many years later when your pet reaches maturity. Perhaps most compelling is the fact that many pet insurance policies reimburse owners at least 3/4 of costs after deductibles. This is a significant chunk of change, especially when a seemingly small procedure, such as having a foreign object removed from a pet’s stomach, can

cost nearly $800. 2. Device insurance: Accidental electronic device damage is all too common. Approximately onethird of all users damage their cell phone within the first year of owning it, and as we all know, repairing or replacing these devices can be quite pricey. While a phone warranty typically does not cover loss or theft, many insurance providers offer protection plans that do and save you money to boot. USAA has partnered with ProtectCELL to offer a smartphone protection plan. 3. Valuable personal property insurance: Homeowner’s and renter’s insurance do not always cover valuables. Many homeowner’s coverage policies have a certain limit for valuable items categories. For example, a typical homeowner’s policy may have a limit of $1,500 in coverage for jewelry. A valuable personal property policy provides coverage for higher-ticket items such as jewelry, silverware, fine art, stamps and coins,

This type of policy also provides coverage for damage or loss, which is a major distinction from a homeowner’s or renter’s policy. REAL ESTATE Budget checkup for homeowners and future homeowners (BPT) - Sponsored Ad Content from Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. A budget is an important tool for first-time homebuyers and current homeowners. Throw out any negative feeling you may have toward budgeting. We’re here to tell you that budgeting is a great exercise, and can free your financial mind! A budget is meant to be a guide to where you should spend your monthly income. Budgeting can mean guilt-free fun. By making and sticking to your budget, you can spend money knowing exactly how much you need to set aside for necessities, and how much you can spend on other activities! Budgets are an important tool for the first-time homebuyer because it can help you make your move into a home with a payment that fits your lifestyle and circumstances. For existing homeowners, budgets can help you achieve or maintain financial freedom. Budgeting can be done by anyone - it just takes time initially to set it up correctly. Gather paychecks, bills and bank statements to get started. You can write down all this information or use a budget tool. Start by calculating your monthly income, which includes not only the amount you may get from a regular paycheck, but also any money you get in government aid, child support or pensions. The next step is to look at your bills and bank statements to find out truly what you spend in each category. This accurate information will empower you to take control of your finances. Do you see a surplus?

That is great! You can take that surplus and contribute to your financial goals, whether that be saving for a down payment, taking a family vacation or building a nest egg. Do you see a deficit? If so, you can make the changes needed to balance your budget. You can cut back on nonessential items, like eating dinners out, to get financially fit. Having this knowledge is powerful and can help you take the right steps toward financial stability. A budget is crucial for home ownership, whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or you currently own a home. About Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. REAL ESTATE 4 ways to recreate your entertaining space for Blu-ray and gaming consoles right out of the box. Whatever you want to do or watch, this project enhances your experience. • Install a seating strategy. Every entertaining area has viewing seats that are less than ideal, and while a new projector can expand your viewing options, there’s still no reason to settle for second-class seating. If you’re planning to have a large group over on game day, a simple platform can provide your room with stadium seating and give everyone that at-the-game feel. If stadium seating isn’t for you, strive for an open arrangement and place display tables and other storage solutions behind seating when guests come over. Those items don’t need a good viewing angle anyway. • Add a few extra comforts. It’s time to take customizing your entertaining space up a notch by adding a few elements that are uniquely you. From full bars to mini fridges, humidors and portable air conditioners or dehumidifiers, there are several tiny additions you can make to any entertaining area to make the space more enjoyable. If you’ve ever wished you had something nearby, now’s your time to add it. Think it over and you’ll see that the right additions can have a big impact on how you use the space and how much you enjoy it. Reshape your entertaining space today. With so many big events coming up, every moment you waste in reshaping your entertaining space is another opportunity missed. DECEMBER 2018 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 25

(BPT) - The holidays, the big game, New Year’s and everything in between: At this time of year there are plenty of reasons to invite family and friends to your home to entertain. In addition, there are also plenty of times - particularly on cold winter nights - when you just want to have a place you can go to get cozy, play a video game or watch a movie in peace. Either can be an appealing option, but do you have an entertaining space that fits the bill? One where you want to spend your free time? • Control light. A common design tip for most spaces is to allow for lots of light. You may want that when everyone comes together to watch a game, but for those times when you want to watch a film or play a video game, a darker environment may be more immersive. To keep total control of the light in your entertaining area, invest in roomdarkening blinds or dark curtains that can block out the sun when you crave darkness and let in the light when you don’t. • Redefine your viewing experience. When people come to your home, they will often be there to watch something on the screen. That makes the right technology essential. The 4K UHD Laser Smart Home Theater CineBeam Projector is perfect for binge-watching the hottest shows, enjoying an immersive gaming experience or cheering on your favorite team. The projector itself can be ceiling mounted or set up to reflect onto any screen you want, and because it is empowered with Smart TV, you’ll have access to wireless streaming, Netflix and YouTube. What’s more, HDMI and HDCP input make your projector ready
