85 Years Old And No More Glasses By Jana Danger - Aventura Digest

Paulino Perez recently turned 85. Although he needed glasses for 40 years, he doesn’t anymore. In fact, he recently went into the Department of Motor Vehicles and took an eye test, passed with flying colors and had the “corrective lenses” restriction eliminated from his license. Paulino can see without corrective lenses for the first time in decades because he had cataract surgery at the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach, and his near-sightedness was corrected at the same time. He is thrilled with the result. “I can see fine without glasses now,” he says. The correction is amazing. “I

can see fine to drive, I can read most small print and I can work on the computer without glasses,” Paulino says. “Colors are more vivid, too.” The procedure was easy and quick. “It took 15 minutes and there was no pain,” Paulino says. “You’re awake, and an hour or two later, you’re out of there. It’s really not a big deal.” But the result is definitely a big deal, and Paulino is enjoying his freedom from glasses. Paulino first heard he had cataracts seven years ago, when he went in to an optometrist for an emergency visit to be treated for a scratched cornea. The practitioner told him he had cataracts. “But he said they were still

quite small, and I probably wouldn’t have a problem for awhile,” he recalls. But then about 1 1/2 years ago, Paulino ordered a pair of new glasses from an optical chain store. “When I put them on, everything was fuzzy,” he says. He asked for, and got, a refund. A few months later, after having a successful hip replacement, he returned to the place that had treated his scratched cornea to get a different pair of new glasses. But the practitioner told him new glasses wouldn’t help him see better because his cataracts had worsened significantly and needed to be removed. When

• Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that several types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. These include heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke and bacterial endocarditis. Some researchers believe that bacteria from gum disease can enter your bloodstream and travel through your arteries to your heart, effecting your cardiovascular system. Although periodontal disease seems to be associated with heart disease, more studies are needed before the link can be confirmed with certainty. • Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. Some research has shown that disease-causing organisms in a pregnant woman’s mouth can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, possibly causing premature birth. Unfortunately, treating periodontal disease during pregnancy may be too late, because the infection may have already spread in the woman’s body. This is why it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health before you get pregnant. • Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth, and a variety of oral infections. Conversly, poor oral health can make your diabetes more difficult to control. Infections may cause your blood sugar to rise and require more insulin to keep it under control. • HIV/AIDS. In some cases, one of the first signs of AIDS may appear in your mouth, with several gum infections. You may also develop persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth. • Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist may be able to spot this on routine dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers. • Other conditions. Many other conditions may make their presence known in your mouth before you know anything’s wrong. These may include Sjogren’s syndrome, certain cancers, eating disorders, syphillis, gonorrhea and substance abuse. So you can see how very important regular dental visits are and how avoiding the dentist can have severely adverse

effects on your overall health. The truth is that the bacteria in the mouth replicate and double every 30 days reaching destructive levels in just 90 days-so people with gum disease can have bone loss in as little as 3 months! Research keeps finding new links between oral health and the health of your body every day. The latest study was done on pancreatic cancer. Here’s what they found: The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found that periodontal disease was associated with an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas. The study appeared in the January 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Data for the new study came from the Health Professional’s Follow-Up Study, which began in 1986 and includes 51,529 U.S. men working in the health professions. Participants respond to questionnares about their health every two years. After analyzing the data, the researchers confirmed 216 cases of pancreatic cancer between 1986 and 2002; of those 67 reported periodontal disease. The results showed that, after adjusting for a smoking, diabetes, body mass index and a number of other factors, men with periodontal disease had a 63% high risk or developing pancreatic cancer compared to those reporting no periodontal disease. “Most convincing was our finding that never-smokers had a two-fold increase in risk of pancreatic cancer,” said Michaud. So that’s the latest information about your mouth!! I know time slips by and seeking a dentist often gets put off until there is a problem or pain. I just wanted to let you know - we understand and don’t lecture our patients about having not been in for so long. The key thing is to take care of any problems, create a great re-care system for you and make sure you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime which will in turn keep your whole body healthier!!

Enjoy Your Holiday Dinners

CITY NEWS

Goodbye, Loehmann’s Plaza. Hello, Aventura Town Center. New town center construction starts in January By Lisa Overing - Aventura Digest

Aventura’s population keeps growing, but planned city initiatives and smart, private development are instilling an even stronger sense of community with each new landmark. Turnberry Associates has teamed with Prudential Real Estate to give Loehmann’s Plaza on Biscayne and 187th Street a complete facelift, establishing a new town center with different anchor stores for a new, pedestrian-friendly destination. While the new town center is not a City of Aventura project, the city’s stringent zoning ordinances have accommodated its development and other projects while the city of excellence draws more businesses and residents. “The new town center is an indication of what’s happening in Aventura,” says Mayor Susan Gottlieb. “Fresh Market, Bagel Cove…all of the shopping centers are being nicely renovated. As money is invested to upgrade shopping facilities in Aventura, the city is demonstrating that it is user-friendly for business. There is great interest in living in Aventura. People are

looking for commercial and residential properties here and that stimulates business growth.” Loehmann’s Department Store relocated in November within the city limits to nearby Biscayne Retail Plaza at 19915 Biscayne Blvd. The lease for Barnes and Noble’s was not renewed and plans for its relocation are not known at this time. Construction has been underway for several months in the previous Burger King location, and the jury is still out as to whether Publix and the remaining restaurants and businesses will remain in their current locations as time marches on. While the plans for the town center are not completed, one can bet that this will be another stellar development stimulating more traffic in an already congested Aventura. Plans for Town Center Aventura began several years ago with the construction of The Venture Condominium. New tenants include Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th scheduled to open in September, 2013 with a 34,000 square foot store in the old

Loehmann’s store location. Saks will be an anchor store repositioning the 187,000-square-foot development as a lifestyle center encouraging visitors to linger to enjoy shopping, dining and family-friendly entertainment. Three new restaurants, three new national retailers, modern building facades and enhanced landscaping and a gazebo hosting afternoon and evening entertainment events for the public are planned for the renovation of Aventura Town Center. Aventura’s population has boomed over the last 10 years to 36,000 with the city building its first charter school in 2003, a state-of-the-art community recreation center, expansions of Founders and Waterways Parks, the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center and an impressive City Hall, which will soon have a three level parking garage to accommodate police vehicles and spillover parking from events at nearby parks. Construction of the new parking facility begins in January, 2013. “190 units for a new condo have been permitted and Island Estates Village is being reviewed for permitting,” says

Gottlieb. “We have a little bit of everything in Aventura. We’re a little jewel between Miami and Broward County, conveniently located.” Miami-Dade’s passage of the $1.2 billion education bond in the November election will address the school overcapacity impacting Aventura’s students. Bond monies are to be divided between repair, maintenance, technology and new schools. The bond specifically provides for two new elementary schools in Miami-Dade and 1,500 additional high school seats in Northeast Dade County, a critical issue for Aventura’s teenagers clamoring for another high school. Gottlieb says no timeline has been developed for the school projects but that she will be actively involved in the process with Dr. Martin Karp, vice chair of the school board for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

someone he trusted recommended Dr. Braverman, Paulino made an appointment. He’s glad he did. “I was told he’s the best,” Paulino says. “He did a great job.” Every day, Paulino is enjoying the experience of not having to wear glasses anymore. “My sight is 100 percent better,” he says. “And I have a driver’s license that says ‘no restrictions.’” Also as an added benefit, Paulino’s wife Virginia, had cataract surgery by Dr. Braverman the very same day as Paulino! According to Dr. Braverman, she also now enjoys much better vision because of the cataract surgery. What Are Cataracts A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, and new upgraded premium lens designs. Eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure.

If I walk there when I shop, I am limited as to what I can physically carry back ergo I am limited as to what I can spend in my impulsive sprees. I’m certainly going to miss walking to Loehmann’s Back Room and Barnes and Noble’s best seller section after strolling there on foot, off and on for 15 years now. But I realize that the new Saks Fifth Off 5th Store and the entire redevelopment of Loehmann’s Plaza into

Av e n t u r a Town Center will inevitably create some new craze that will justify my jaunts up the block even as my favorite stores relocate or completely disappear. Three new national anchor stores and three new restaurants will begin to reposition Aventura Town Center into a family destination spot starting in January. With the prospect of free concerts and entertainment events at the gazebo, the new plaza ought to be a lot of fun, even if there aren’t jelly donuts within walking distance anymore.

While I am a zealous supporter of the Fresh Market, I believe that Publix makes the best jelly donuts in Aventura and on planet Earth. The confectionary sugar is soft, not a hard glaze as on most donuts. I have a hard time passing the bakery without yearning for a donut and buying a half dozen in a box. Since I am the president of the Publix’s frequent buyer jelly donut club, I have had to develop some obsessivecompulsive theorems to justify my jelly fetish and its impact on my middleaged waistband. On most occasions I walk instead of drive down 190th Street to Loehmann’s Plaza to buy my jelly donuts. It burns the calories in advance of the inevitable consumption that occurs shortly thereafter with a frothy glass of chocolate milk. I have always enjoyed walking down the block to Publix and I have adopted the same weird theory to shopping at Loehmann’s Department

CITY NEWS Mosaic Theatre Presents Award Winning Playwright Conor Mc Pherson’s Play “The Birds” By Eleanor Hannan - Aventura Digest

From the writer of the Award Winning hit, The Seafarer, and other successful plays, comes the Southeastern Premier, “The Birds.” This new play is a chilling psychological portrait inspired by Daphne Du Maurier’s short story ( on which Hitchcock’s famous thriller film was based.) It’s not yet winter and there’s a chill in the air, the sky is darkening and the atmosphere is eerie, as millions of birds swarm overhead, upon an unsuspecting city, while in an isolated abandoned house, in a Cornish seaside town, war veteran, Nat Hocken, living in the town, and working part time on a farm, notices a large number of birds behaving strangely. As the situation worsens and the birds start to attack, he

needs to find shelter. As complete strangers, Nat and Diane, a writer, are both trying to escape, find refuge in the cottage, but experience the pressure of being imprisoned in a farmhouse, by thousands of birds maneuvering outside, and are confined with no electricity and little food, as they seek shelter from the masses of birds that are attacking everyone in the vicinity. Nat and Diane, both survivors of broken relationships, start to form a bond, but the relationship is broken by the arrival of Julia, whose presence appears to see them as one happy family but, eventually feathers are ruffled leading to thoughts of murder. Experience a thriller

like none other as ‘The Birds,” fly to the Mosaic Theatre, now on stage through December 9, 2012. For tickets and other information call the box office at 954-5778243 located at the American Heritage Center 12200 West Broward Boulevard, Plantation.

HOROSCOPES Aries (March 21 - April 19) You must be really excited about emerging career opportunities you have started to see pop up since the middle of November. Mars has recently entered your tenth house, and that rules your professional progress, including honors, awards, achievement, and fame you may be experiencing since mid-November. Taurus (April 20- May 20) Always the prudent, producer sign of the zodiac, you take pride in your ability to make good money and manage it well, so this month you should be especially buoyant. The eclipse of last month, November 28, was especially generous, because a full moon lunar eclipse appeared and triggered some sort of offer, negotiation, or settlement. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) You are in a very lucky phase, for Jupiter, the giver of gifts and luck, is still in Gemini for the first time since mid-2000 to mid-2001. Back in those years, Saturn was not in a friendly angle to Jupiter, and so Saturn severely limited Jupiter’s benefits. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) In December, your partner will be setting the tone. Mars is now in Capricorn, your opposite sign, until December 25, so it might be a relief to know that you won’t have to make all the decisions - you will have help. With many of the planets moving through your western side of your chart, it’s clear that this is a collaborative month and that you may have to make a few concessions.

Libra (September 23 - October 22) Life was hard for you over a very long time - three endless years - that it would be understandable if you simply dream of getting away to a sunny place where cell phones don’t work and no one knows your name. While you couldn’t quite say that things are exactly easy now, you do have to admit a little grudgingly that things are getting better. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Power and money seem to be occupying your thoughts, and you seem determined to make a success out of all you do this month - good, for you can! Others might be thinking about the holiday, but you seem to have a financial goal in mind, and you will see opportunity everywhere you look. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) It’s birthday month, and a fresh new canvas awaits the swirl of your paintbrush. How will you color your new birthday year ahead, dear Sagittarius? It’s an exciting time to be you, and all the other little planets will stand aside to give you the right of way. Everyone will be eager to hear what you hope to happen next, so don’t disappoint them, dear Sagittarius. Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) This will be an exciting, busy time for you, as you still have Mars, the action planet, in Capricorn, giving you enormous favor. We all love having Mars in our sign, because as the ancient astrologers used to say, when you have Mars moving through your own sign, you have energy, drive, and courage.

Leo (July 23- August 22) New friends are pouring into your life as a result of the full moon lunar eclipse in Gemini of last month, November 28. That was a lovely eclipse, and it may even help to boost your love life, which should grow quite vibrant this month.

Aquarius (January 20- February 18) You have a glorious chart this month, especially for finding romance, socializing, and lots of fun, thanks to the tour of Jupiter, giver of gifts and luck, now in Gemini. Last month you had a wonderful eclipse on November 28, sure to ratchet your social life up another notch.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) The month starts out unusually bewitchingly romantic. You’ve been working hard all year, and with Jupiter in your fame sector, if you have not yet seen professional reward, you will in short order, if not now, very soon. The harder and smarter you’ve worked, the bigger the rewards will be.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20) You have just entered the most important career month of 2012, and soon you will see the sky become ablaze with celebratory fireworks for all your work well done. When you hear the thundering applause, you may feel a little overwhelmed because as a Pisces, you are a modest soul.

HEALTH Dry Eye: Dealing With A Common Issue (BPT) - Dry eye affects up to 40 million Americans, has many causes, and a variety of symptoms. Those who suffer from dry eye know one thing: that it can be very uncomfortable. Common dry eye symptoms include scratchiness or grittiness, the feeling of a foreign particle in the eye, redness and even excessive reflex watering. Attacking the cause vs. the symptoms The underlying factor in dry eye syndrome is inflammation. Reducing inflammation on the surface of the eye and regulating the glands that produce tears are essential to effectively managing dry eye. Artificial tears and rewetting drops may offer temporary relief, but this only treats the symptom. How the tear film affects dry eye The tear film has three layers: a water layer, an oil layer and a mucous layer. The mucous layer is located on the eye surface and provides natural lubrication. The next layer is the water layer, produced by a gland under the upper eyelid. Finally, the outermost layer is the oil layer, which is produced by glands along the rim of the eyelid; this layer protects the water layer from evaporating too quickly. When any or all of the layers are not functioning correctly, the tears may become unstable or the tears may evaporate too quickly, resulting in dry eye. Common causes of dry eye During winter months, many experience dry eye as humidity levels drop and home heating systems are activated resulting in drier air. This often causes tears to evaporate more quickly. Other leading causes of dry eye include aqueous gland dysfunction. In this situation, tear-producing glands do not produce enough tear volume, or there is less-than-optimal tear composition. Contact lens wearers are particularly susceptible to dry eye as soft lens materials require additional lubrication and a balanced tear film is vital to successful lens wearing. In many cases, medicated eye drops may exacerbate dry eye in contact lens wearers. It is estimated that up to half of contact lens wearers discontinue use due to discomfort often caused by dry eye.

Relieving dry eye Many doctors and patients reach for an eye drop to provide immediate relief of dry eye. Unfortunately, that immediate relief is temporary. Much has been written about Omega-3s in recent years including its use as an effective treatment of dry eye. As a natural anti-inflammatory, Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that support healthy tear production and keep eyes moisturized. In addition to Omega-3s, other anti-inflammatory ingredients like vitamins A, D3, E, turmeric extract, green tea, and evening primrose oil, can significantly accelerate the time it takes to feel dry eye relief. Many eye care professionals are recommending oral anti-inflammatories as a first step to reduce ocular surface inflammation and regulate gland function without the unwanted side effects noted with topical agents. Managing dry eye Leading eye care professionals agree that dry eye is an ongoing issue that cannot be cured, but can be effectively managed. Oral dry eye vitamins from brands like EyePromise feature all natural ingredients, and provide dry eye relief from the inside by reducing inflammation and regulating healthy tear production. Get a jump on dry eye season this winter Consult with your eye doctor about an exam to determine the type of dry eye you may have, and for more information on oral anti-inflammatory eye vitamins.

HEALTH ‘Modern Family’s’ Julie Bowen shares personal family story of living with life-threatening allergies (BPT) - Pop quiz! Do you know what a peanut butter sandwich in the cafeteria, a latex glove in the science lab and a bumblebee on the playground all have in common? For some students, an encounter with any of these items could cause a lifethreatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Anaphylaxis has many possible triggers, can occur quickly, without warning, and must be treated immediately with epinephrine. Avoidance of allergic triggers is the critical first step in managing lifethreatening allergies. However, allergens are not always obvious and accidental exposure may still happen. In an effort to increase awareness of and preparedness for anaphylaxis, Emmyaward winning actress Julie Bowen, known for her comedic role in “Modern Family,” has joined Mylan Specialty L.P. on the Get Schooled in Anaphylaxis(TM) initiative. Get Schooled in Anaphylaxis offers practical information to educate the school community to help those at risk for life-threatening allergic reactions

avoid their triggers, recognize anaphylaxis signs and symptoms and understand how to quickly get appropriate treatment and immediate medical care when anaphylaxis occurs. Julie, who found out that her son had life-threatening allergies when he experienced anaphylaxis as a toddler, is sharing her family’s experience to help drive a national conversation on this serious health issue. Fortunately, Julie’s son received immediate medical care and recovered quickly. “I know first-hand that anaphylaxis can happen anywhere and at any time, and that people often aren’t ready to respond,” said Bowen. “My son’s reaction was a wake-up call that our family and those who take care of our son when he is in school, need to become more educated about life-threatening allergic reactions, how to best avoid them from happening and what to do in case an accidental exposure occurs.” Children and adolescents are among those most at-risk for anaphylaxis due to increased exposure to potential allergic

triggers. In fact, the prevalence of food allergies among children is on the rise, now affecting approximately one in 13 U.S. children. Anaphylaxis causes an estimated 1,500 deaths each year. The good news: Julie is excited that Get Schooled in Anaphylaxis offers a comprehensive, communityinspired online resource on www.Anaphylaxis101.com to meet the information needs of the extended community impacted by potentially lifethreatening allergies. The website includes a personalized, virtual tour and access to an extensive library of resources from leading patient, professional, and advocacy groups. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, school nurses and other community members can access information specific to their needs and learn how they can contribute to raising anaphylaxis awareness and preparedness. By logging on to www.Anaphylaxis101.com, visitors have the option to enter a virtual experience or find useful resources and materials tailored to the individual role in the school community and where they live.

“Similar to recognizing when someone needs the Heimlich maneuver or CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), we want people to recognize anaphylaxis signs and symptoms, and understand how to quickly get appropriate treatment and immediate medical care when anaphylaxis occurs,” said Hemant Sharma, M.D., Associate Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. “Every person responsible for the health of children in schools should be aware of and prepared for a life-threatening allergic reaction. I encourage everyone to visit www.Anaphylaxis101.com to learn more about anaphylaxis and get information to help them be prepared to respond if it happens.”

HEALTH Women urged to speak up about silent symptom of menopause (BPT) - Mood swings, hot flashes and night sweats are common complaints from women going through menopause. But there is another common menopause symptom that is affecting millions of women, yet only 25 percent of sufferers seek medical help. Vaginal discomfort, which may be caused by a condition called vaginal atrophy (VA), is the “silent” symptom of menopause that women rarely discuss because they think it is a natural part of growing older and that nothing can be done. When in reality, VA is a chronic condition caused by a decline in estrogens and the symptoms can be severe. VA is often characterized by dryness, itching, burning or soreness in the vagina, bleeding during intercourse, pain during urination, or pain in the vagina in connection with touching and/ or intercourse. If left untreated, it could lead to serious complications. Vaginal atrophy impacts many aspects of quality of life, including couples’ relationships. According to a recent survey of 1,010 post-menopausal American women ages 55 to 65 who were living with this

condition, and same-aged male partners of post-menopausal women with VA, both partners in a relationship experienced the negative effects of vaginal discomfort. The survey, conducted by global health care company Novo Nordisk, found more than half of women avoided being intimate with their partner due to vaginal discomfort, while more than three out of 10 women reported they do not feel sexually attractive anymore and had lost confidence in themselves as a sexual partner. Sixty-five percent of the men reported that they were worried sex would be painful for their partner because of her condition, and almost a third of both men and women reported that they have stopped having sex with their partners altogether because of the discomfort. “Beyond the physical symptoms that the woman endures, the sense of intimacy in the relationship, both emotional and physical, declines,” says prominent menopause expert James A. Simon, M.D., C.C.D., N.C.M.P., F.A.C.O.G., clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. “The effects on sexual health and interpersonal

relationships are sizeable. Women should stop suffering in silence, and start speaking up. Women are taking control of most aspects of their health, why not their vaginal health? Women should speak to their doctors. There are treatments available.” How does a woman approach this problem? Don’t be embarrassed. Vaginal atrophy is still considered a taboo subject, and many women are too embarrassed to discuss the condition, even with their health care professionals, because they think it is a private matter. Women should feel comfortable speaking with their partners and health care professionals about their symptoms and potential treatment options. Speaking with a physician is an important first step. Most women with vaginal discomfort do not seek medical treatment. Women should speak with their health care professionals about available therapies approved to treat vaginal atrophy. Treatment options can provide relief. Many women self-treat using over-thecounter lubricants and moisturizers, which provide temporary relief of

HEALTH Practical, protective foot health steps for people with diabetes (BPT) - Healthy feet are essential for overall good health, no matter your age, fitness level or physical challenges. For people with diabetes, however, taking care of their feet is especially vital. More than 60 percent of all non-traumatic lower-limb amputations worldwide are related to complications from the disease, according to the American Diabetes Association. A recent study by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) indicates Hispanics with diabetes are particularly in danger since more than 90 percent of those with the disease or at risk for it have never seen a podiatrist as part of their health care. “Regardless of ethnicity, foot ulcers and infections are the leading cause of hospitalization among people with diabetes, but most of those problems are largely preventable,” says Dr. Joseph Caporusso, a podiatrist and president of the APMA. It’s important for those with the disease to ‘knock their socks off’ and receive regular foot exams by today’s podiatrists.” While ulcers - open sores on the foot - are the most common diabetes-related foot problem, several others are also serious and prevalent, including neuropathy, skin changes, calluses, poor circulation and infection. The nerve damage that diabetes causes may mean a person with an ulcer or injury may be unaware of it until it becomes infected. Infection can lead to partial or full amputation of the foot or lower leg. The good news is, regular care from a podiatrist can help reduce amputation rates between 45 and 85 per-

cent, the APMA says. People with diabetes need to inspect their feet daily and be vigilant for warning signs of ulcers, including irritation, redness, cracked or dry skin (especially around the heels) or drainage on their socks. Although ulcers can occur anywhere on the foot or ankle, they are typically found on pressure points on the foot, like the ball of the foot or bottom of the big toe. If you discover an ulcer or have any symptoms, see a podiatrist immediately. In many cases, the foot can be saved with early treatment. In addition to examining your feet every day, and keeping your blood glucose in your target range, make sure to follow these foot health tips: • Discuss your diabetes and the risks with your family. Diabetes can be hereditary, so talk to your family members about monitoring blood sugar and foot health. • Never go barefoot. Always protect your feet with the proper footwear and make sure both socks and shoes are comfortable and fit well. • Trim toenails straight across, and never cut the cuticles. Seek immediate treatment for ingrown toenails, as they

can lead to serious infection. • Keep your feet elevated while sitting. • Wiggle toes and move your feet and ankles up and down for five minute sessions throughout the day. “Successfully managing diabetes is a team effort, and today’s podiatrist is an integral player on that team,” Caporusso says. To find a podiatrist, or to learn more about foot health and care, visit www.apma.org.
