143 talent agents representing thousands of performing artists presented 99 previews of shows ready for when the curtain goes up again. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s General Manager, Jeff Kiltie and Scott Gutierrez-Miller Events Services Manager, recently took part in a three-day virtual conference presented by The Florida Professional Presenters’ Consortium, known simply as Florida Presenters which proves entertainers are as eager as audiences are to see a return to live performances. During the conference, 143 talent agents representing thousands of performing artists presented 99 previews of shows ready for when the curtain goes up again. Administrators from 60 venues across Florida attended the on-line cultural trade show presented by the statewide organization that represents nonprofit, publicly owned and operated performing arts facilities. “We were among the first to close when the Pandemic began and it has taken careful planning to reopen,” said Kiltie. “We work closely with the performers and their managers for several months to a year in advance to schedule shows. As the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center prepares to reopen, the health & safety of our guests, artists, staff and volunteers are our top priorities. Our health & safety guidelines have been developed in conjunction with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in collaboration with The Cleveland Clinic and by following the guidance of local, state health officials and the CDC.” The Broward Center for the Performing Arts manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The Broward Center Director of Programming and Florida Presenters’ VP; Jill Kratish instigated a weekly Zoom call for Florida Presenters’ members during the first weeks of the Pandemic to checkin, compare notes and provide moral support. The weekly call was attended by 4050 people, soon talent agents, product

vendors and special guests were being invited as well. The pivot to an on-line virtual conference was a natural outgrowth of those weekly Zoom calls. South Arts and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs sponsored the event enabling Florida Presenters’ to offer the entire program to its members and the invited talent agents, entirely free of charge. The conference utilized the Event Hub, Zoom platforms and three “Virtual Room Managers” were hired from the Miami area to manage the technical aspects of the on-line presentations. Planning for the Summit 2.0 in September 2021 is already underway. Whether it will be a traditional in-person event or a virtual event is unknown at this time, but the organization is pleased with the results of the inaugural Summit. Florida Presenters is committed to strengthening Florida’s quality of life, economy and communities through the business of culture and education. Collectively, the member organizations of Florida Presenters’ serves six million audience members a year, creating a statewide economic impact of $500 million a year, which supports the Full Time Equivalent of over 15,000 jobs, $378 million of household income, $21.8 million of local government fees, tax revenue, $26.1 million of state fees, government fees and tax revenue. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary Season, The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is a 14,864-square-foot, 330-seat waterfront complex that hosts performing arts, cultural and educational programming for all ages. It is located at 3385 Northeast 188th Street, Aventura, Florida 33180. Join the conversation on: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram @aventuracenter or #aventuracenters.

What’s The Difference Between Flu and COVID-19? Getting vaccinated for the flu is more important than ever. Not only will a flu shot help keep you and your family healthy, it can help reduce the strain on the healthcare system and keep hospital beds and other medical resources available for people with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This is no ordinary flu season; it’s a flu season amid a pandemic. With two dangerous viruses going around at once, it’s time for people to protect their communities by getting the vaccine already available: the flu vaccine. Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they’re caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. Because some symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, it may be hard to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone, and testing may be needed to help confirm a diagnosis. It is possible to have flu and COVID-19 at the same time. Health experts are still studying how common this can be. While it’s not possible to say with certainty what will happen in the fall and winter, the CDC believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID19 will both be spreading. The CDC has developed a test that will check for A - and B - type seasonal flu viruses and SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This test will be used by U.S. public health laboratories. Testing for these viruses at the same time will give public health officials important information about how flu and COVID-19 are spreading and what preventive steps should be taken. Get Your Flu Shot People with Medicare are at greater risk for serious complications from flu because of their age. A flu shot is an important preventive tool for individuals with asthma, diabetes, and heart and lung disease - chronic conditions that can increase the risk for serious flu-related health complications or even death. It’s the best protection from getting and spreading this flu virus, and it’s covered by Medicare at no cost. Medicare Part B covers one flu shot per flu season per

beneficiary. You pay nothing for a flu shot if your doctor or other qualified healthcare provider accepts Medicare payment for giving the shot. A flu shot won’t protect you against COVID-19, but it has many other important benefits. Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there’s no evidence that a flu vaccination increases your risk of getting sick from a coronavirus, like the one that causes COVID-19. Those at high risk for flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people 65 years and older, and people with certain chronic health conditions. Anyone who is six months old or older should get a yearly flu vaccine. The CDC recommends getting vaccinated in September or October, but a flu shot anytime during the flu season can help protect you. Flu season in North America rarely begins before early October and usually lasts from December to March. In the past two years, the peak activity has occurred around mid-to-late February. Your body needs two weeks after a shot to develop a protective response to the influenza virus, so your best bet is to get vaccinated before the flu rate begins to climb. Workplaces and other settings that usually provide flu shots may not do so this season because of the challenges of maintaining social distancing. For more information on where you can get a flu vaccine, visit www.vaccinefinder.org. When going to get a flu shot, please practice everyday preventive actions and follow the CDC’s recommendations for running essential errands. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, or health department if they are following CDC’s vaccination pandemic guidance. Any vaccination location following CDC’s guidance should be a safe place for you to get a flu vaccine. If you have a child over six months old who qualifies for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), you may also qualify for a flu vaccination at no cost to you. So please protect yourself, your family, and your community by getting a flu shot. Visit the doctor, pharmacy, or other local providers to get a flu shot today.

Pandemic Depression: Genetic Insight May Help Treatment Social isolation during the Pandemic may pose a mental health threat for those already at risk for COVID-19 and people over the age of 65. As doctors treat more senior patients for depression, an increasingly popular genetic test can inform their treatment decisions. The GeneSight test (www.genesight.com) provides information about how your genes may impact how you metabolize and respond to certain depression medications. Innovative solutions for mental health conditions are important. As the Pandemic and its resulting isolation wears on, many are struggling with their mental health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, loneliness can be associated with higher rates of depression. “When I first experienced depression, it happened all of a sudden,” shared Doreen, a wife, mother of three grown children and a retiree. “It was like a cloud happened in my head.” Symptoms of depression can include changes in sleep or eating patterns, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating or a lack of motivation.

You don’t have to live with depression. An increasingly popular test may help your doctor make a more informed treatment decision. Doreen saw her doctor, who prescribed a depression medication, but it didn’t alleviate her symptoms. “I began to see one doctor, then another, to help deal with my depression,” said Doreen. Her doctors tried many, many different medications

and none seemed to work. Finally, my heart doctor said, “Doreen, I’ve heard about this gene test, I think it might help you.” Her doctor was referring to the GeneSight test. The test is a simple cheek swab,

ordered by a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. A patient can take the test at home or in the doctor’s office. Using a patient’s unique DNA, the GeneSight test informs doctors about potential gene-drug interactions. The report provides information about which depression medications may require dose adjustments, may be less likely to work, or may have an increased risk of side effects based on a patient’s genetic makeup. The GeneSight test helped Doreen’s doctor to make an informed treatment decision and she was prescribed a new medication. “That’s when my life started to change, I got back to smiling, being happy, laughing and I got back to being me again,” Doreen said. Post-Pandemic life will likely never be the same, if depression is one of the unanticipated consequences, treatment is important. People struggling with depression can ask their doctor about the GeneSight test. To learn more, visit: www.GeneSight.com.

Why Is Now The Best Time To Treat Your Varicose Veins?

(L) VenaSeal™ differs from traditional vein treatments in the way it quickly causes occlusion within the vein. Treatments take only 20-30 minutes each. (R) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98 -100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a very thin laser fiber through the affected vein via a needle so there is normally no scar or incision and requires no sutures. By Dr. Susan Fox, DABVLM, D.O., RPVI, FSVM

DECEMBER 2020 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 14

If you are ready to treat your varicose veins, you’re likely tired of their unsightly appearance or, more importantly, want to rid yourself of them for good so that they don’t cause deeper health problems down the line. Why is now the best time to treat your varicose veins or venous insufficiency? Well, with Covid, people are going out less, travelling less, working from home more and more able to wear compression hose and not care about the down time or bruising that though minimal, may interfere with normal life. Life is not normal at the moment and with this slower pace of life, people have more opportunity to take the time to treat themselves. As well, most people have met their deductibles by this point in the year and the vein treatments are often covered by insurance or can be funded through health spending accounts which will be lost if they are not used. Whatever the reason, treating your varicose veins means getting to know the different varicose vein removal procedures at Fox Vein & Laser Experts, South Florida’s best vein removal center. When you’re ready to undergo treatments for vein

removal, it’s likely that you’ve already done your research. You’ve probably looked up the best vein removal treatment centers in south Florida and asked the basics like, “Are laser vein removal treatments effective?” “Wiil they hurt?” “For years now, I’ve come across hundreds of patients who would visit our office feeling apprehensive about their vein removal treatments,” Dr. Susan Fox, owner and founder of Fox Vein & Laser Experts says. “They don’t realize that by treating their veins, they may be opening up their world to a range of benefits and overall improved health.” Providing you relief, both physically and aesthetically, from your varicose veins, has been a passion of ours for as long as we’ve been in business. We know how important feeling and looking good is to your daily routine, which is why we have a multitude of ways to treat your leg veins once and for all. “We want to ensure that no matter your age, skin type, or vascular issues, there is a way for your legs to be restored to good health,” Dr. Susan Fox says. “The reason why we have so many different varicose vein treatments is because there are many different types of veins and we like to be

specific to get you the best results. First, it’s important to know whether the bluish, purplish veins that you see on your legs are in fact, varicose veins. A lot of times, people confuse the more severe varicose veins with the less obvious spider veins that are pretty common as well. Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen or felt through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red and blue vessels that also twist and turn but are tiny. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin, as well but are very small and often fan out in arcs. What most people don’t know, however, is that both spider veins and varicose veins are often connected. Self magazine reports, “Patients who have varicose veins almost always have spider veins, too. However, some people get spider veins and never have a problem with varicose veins.” Whichever the ones you have, both can cause symptoms. Around sixty percent of people with only spider veins have symptoms of burning, aching, itching throbbing or other symptoms. Almost 90 percent of people with varicose veins have symptoms of

swelling, aching, burning, throbbing, skin discoloration or hardening of the skin and even ulcerations on their ankles or legs. Now that we’ve cleared that up (pun intended) let’s take care of those legs! Here are the different varicose vein treatment options available at Fox Vein & Laser Experts: Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) One of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a success rate of 98 100 percent, endovenous laser ablation involves inserting a very thin laser fiber through the affected vein via a needle hole that typically involves no incisions and leaves no scar and requires no sutures. Small pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. During the treatment process, the blood from these veins is redirected to better and more competent veins and the insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. Sounds perfect? Wait, it gets better. These kinds of procedures can be done in just a 30-minute

window of time and there is little to no down time afterwards. In studies, around 50% of people had no pain afterwards and most only described it as a two to four on a scale of 1 to 10. The pain usually is relieved by a little ibuprofen or naproxen for a few days and you can return to most normal activities immediately. Varithena Ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins, foam sclerotherapy is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a medicated solution is injected directly into the affected veins. When injected as a foam rather than a liquid, the solution can target some of the larger, underlying varicose veins that cannot typically be treated with sclerotherapy. The foam irritates the lining of the vessel walls for longer and pushes the blood out of the way, causing them to stick together and close shut, rerouting the blood through healthy veins. While you may feel a sting at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy is not considered a painful technique and is minimally invasive. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct it into the

CITY NEWS person is afraid of needles, laser is an option and we have cutaneous lasers as well, that remove these tiny red veins without much difficulty. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or miniscule red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh which uses microbursts of energy to close shut teeny veins without any down time or scarring. This procedure often seals the tiny veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions often with amazing results.

VARICOSE VEINS? Continued From Pg 14 problematic vein watching everything as we are doing it. The person has no down time, usually no to minimal pain and only needs to stay active and wear compression hose afterwards. VenaSeal This is a great non-surgical approach to removing your varicose veins. VenaSeal™ attempts to treat veins by fostering a clot to form by injecting a crazy gluelike substance into the vein. It causes the vein walls to adhere and seal shut. As long as no one has had an allergic reaction to crazy glue or surgical glues, this is an option for the treatment of veins.

Dr. Susan B. Fox, DO RPVI, FSVM is board certified in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and has been a vein and laser expert for decades. She and her staff are experts in Laser treatments.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy A surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins, ambulatory phlebectomy is an in-office procedure that requires local anesthesic (think lidocaine like at the dentist). The veins are teased out through the small holes without

causing any major scarring or requiring major surgery, which is a significant advancement from the extensive vein stripping procedures of the past. Most often this is done with pinholes that don’t even need to be closed with sutures. Although this procedure

requires small incisions in the skin, most patients return to normal activities immediately afterward without any necessary recovery time. Spider Vein Removal Often, spider vein removal is cosmetic even though they may

cause symptoms. The gold standard is sclerotherapy where a solution is injected into the vein with a teeny-tiny needle and the vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut closing off that tiny vein over several weeks. It often takes several sessions for all of the veins to go away. If a

Why Women Lose Their Hair And Ways They Can Grow It Back While hair thinning and loss is well known as a distressing problem for many men, it’s also an issue for women, who comprise about 40% of American hair-loss sufferers, hair loss is even more worrisome for them, doctors say, because it’s less acceptable in society. “Hair loss is especially devastating for younger women – it can make them

feel less attractive,” says Dr. Patrick Angelos (drpatrickangelos.com), author of The Science and Art of Hair Restoration: A Patient’s Guide. “Women who are losing hair are typically very distraught. Stereotypically, it’s somewhat normal and even accepted for men to lose some of their hair, but for women it can take an emotional toll. But as with

men, there is hope for women in a variety of ways to grow their hair back as well.” Dr. Angelos explains some of the causes for hair loss in women as well as some of the treatments to bring hair back. Causes of Hair Loss in Women • Anemia, or low iron. “When you don’t have

enough iron, your body can’t produce the hemoglobin in your blood,” Dr. Angelos says. “Hemoglobin carries oxygen for the growth and repair of cells in your body, including the cells that stimulate hair growth.” • After pregnancy. “Estrogen levels decline, which shifts her hair cycle from the growing phase to the resting or telogen phase,” Dr. Angelos says. “Full recovery to a normal length of hair may take upward of a year.” • Autoimmune diseases. These diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body, are more common in women than men. “Some of them, because of their systemic nature, can cause hair loss,” Dr. Angelos says. “Autoimmune diseases also affect the gastrointestinal tract, leading to nutritional issues that can then cause hair loss.” • Menopause. “This type of hair loss can affect more than 50 percent of women,” Dr. Angelos says. “Menopause-based hair loss happens because of the significant drop in Estrogen that happens as a woman ages and can put the hairs in a prolonged resting phase.”

Treatments for Hair Loss in Women • Minoxidil. This is also known as a vasodilator, meaning it helps increase blood flow to the scalp. “It helps some of the small

donor area – hair along the back and sides of the scalp – is the key criterion,” Dr. Angelos says. And before women consider transplantation, he says they should try other treat-

hairs to grow stronger and thicker,” Dr. Angelos says. “Minoxidil increases the duration of the growth phase of the hair cycle. It takes at least a couple of months to see results.”

ments for at least a year in order for the doctor to rule out different causes, watch the hair progression and determine if they are a viable transplant candidate.

• Nutrafol. “This is a commercially available product that includes vitamin E, ashwagandha – an Indian ginseng known as a stress and anxiety reducer – curcumin, a powerful antioxidant, and other anti-inflammatories that have been shown to be effective,” Dr. Angelos says.

• Low Laser Light Therapy. “This can be an especially good option when a woman is not a good candidate for hair transplantation,” Dr. Angelos says. “The lasers target the hair follicles, stimulate circulation, oxygenation and causes them to shift into the growing phase.”

• Hair transplantation. According to the American Hair Loss Association, only 2 to 5% of women are considered good candidates for hair transplantation. “Regardless of the cause or degree of hair loss, a stable

“Women don’t like to view hair loss as a natural part of aging and something they can do nothing about,” Dr. Angelos says. “The challenge is to first figure out the culprit and the good news is, you can do something about it.”

(305) 926-3106 Left to Right Kodak (ID A637262) Sassy (ID 637298 Meet Kodak (ID A637262), no not the film company from the past. I am talking about the picture perfect guy who will make everlasting memories with you. This four year old, 82 pound, dapper fellow is very friendly, potty-trained, loves treats, toys and attention, and is good with other dogs…no felines please. Kodak is so good looking we know he’ll find a family in a flash, so visit the Humane Society of Broward County today if you think he is a good match for you. A beautiful bonded pair of felines that would love to go home together are two year olds, Sassy (ID 637298) and Pip (ID 637297). Sassy is more reserved while Pip is a talker and will tell you stories. He also likes to play with toys. These two had a loving, devoted owner, but she is in the military and was called in for service.

Since she doesn’t know how long she will be deployed and had no one take in her pets, she brought them to the Humane Society of Broward County knowing someone will step up and give them the loving home they deserve. Will it be you? Appointments will be required to visit the adoption areas on weekends and select days. Visit www.humane broward.com to learn more or call 954-989-3977 ext. 6. Appointments are not necessary for the vaccine clinic that is open Monday – Friday 9 AM – 4:30 PM credit cards only. The Humane Society of Broward County provides shelter, aid and responsible adoptions to animals entrusted to their care, and educates the community about respect and kindness to all animals. The Humane Society relies on the generosity of

their community and companies to fund their operations and programs budget. They do not get funding from the government, United Way or any other national or local organizations with similar names. Income sources are: adoption fees; services such as dog obedience, vaccination clinics, spay/neuter programs; pet boutique sales; fundraising events; grants; general donations and from those people who leave the shelter in their will. Every dollar is carefully spent to help the unwanted animals. As an independent non-profit organization, they rely on the generosity of the community and companies to fund their operations and programs budget.
