Vacation Hangover:

The Financial Stress Travelers Feel After The Trip

Even as travelers look for ways to cut costs, most remain willing to spend more on experiences they view as meaningful.

Weekend getaways and cross-country trips are supposed to offer a break from daily routines and financial stress. Yet for many travelers, the return home comes with an uncomfortable reality: the trip cost far more than expected. From luxurious dinners and spontaneous excursions to airport snacks and daily coffees, vacation spending is becoming increasingly difficult to control in an era of rising prices and experience-driventravel.

According to a survey conducted by TopCashback, a cash back site serving more than 20 million members worldwide to help people save as much money as possible on everyday spending, overspending while traveling is now the norm rather than the exception. Nearly 94% of respondents said they have spent more on vacation than originally planned, with more than 65% reportingtheytypicallyoverspendbyatleast$250.

“Vacations should create memories, not money stress,” said Elisabella Ricca, Personal Finance and Consumer Analyst at TopCashback. “Giving yourself a spending plan before you travel can make it easier to enjoy the experience in the moment and avoid feeling guiltyaboutthecostafterward.”

These findings reflect a growing disconnect between travel budgets and actual spending as vacationers navigate higher costs and pressure to make their trips feelworthwhile.

Inflation’s Impact On Travel Behaviors

Airfare, hotel rates, dining and entertainment costs are all climbing, forcing many households to rethink how often they take trips and what those trips look like. In fact, nearly 78% of respondents said rising travel costs have changed the way they vacation. Meanwhile, nearly 83% said they’re traveling less often altogether due to risingcosts.

Financial Stress After the Fun

For some travelers, that long-term effect is already being felt. More than 58% of survey respondents said they feel guilty at least sometimes about how much they spend on vacation, a feeling that often emerges after returning home and assessing purchases that seemed easiertojustifywhileawayfromnormalroutines.

Small Purchases are Adding Up to Big Overspending

Vacation overspending rarely happens through one large purchase alone. Instead, smaller expenses accumulate steadily throughout the trip. For example, 53% of respondents said they’re most likely to spend more on coffee or drinks while traveling than they would at home, and another 53% said snacks are the common overspending culprit. These purchases may seem insignificant individually, but multiple small transactions eachdaycanquicklyaddup.

Even as travelers look for ways to cut costs, most remain willing to spend on experiences they view as meaningful. The survey found the top vacation splurges respondents are most likely to justify are fancy dinners (56%) and excursions or tours (48%). This suggests travelers are placing greater value on memorable moments rather than luxury, such as high-end accommodations.

Careful planning isn’t enough for most travelers to stay within a budget, as 59% of respondents said they set a vacation budget beforehand, signaling that overspending is often less about a lack of preparation andmoreabouttherealitiesofmoderntravelcosts. Nearly 90% of survey respondents said earning cash back or rewards on travel purchases would influence their spending decisions at least slightly. As people look for a better way to manage expenses and offset costs, many are turning to programs such as TopCashback, which offers travel-related cash back on airfare and lastminute flights, vacation packages, hotels and lodging, transportation and parking, car rentals, travel insurance, cruises, resortsandmore.

Building Brighter Futures: Helping Young People Succeed in a Changing Economy

(Feature Impact) - During a time when the economy is changing rapidly and shifting the landscape of work into uncertain territory, academic success is no longer enough to put young people on a stable path to the future. Once, a high school diploma was enough to land a wellpaying job. Then a college degree became the gold standard. Now the roadmap has changed again, which means that smart students need to start taking steps in new directions. According to Junior Achievement, three key concepts to add to modern teenagers’ knowledge arsenal include financial literacy, economic mobilityandentrepreneurship.

Why Financial Literacy Matters

When young people are equipped with the knowledge they need to earn, manage, save and invest money, it supports their journey through every life milestone ahead, from education and homeownership to retirement and more. Financial

literacy gives people the confidence to make smart decisions while dodging costly mistakes like getting into highinterestdebt.

A recent Junior Achievement survey indicated that although 42% of Americans struggle with money management, 23% feel their income could be sufficient if they understood how to manage it more effectively. Giving students a strong foundation in financial literacy can set them up well to not only earn money but use it wisely to meet their future needs and accomplishtheirgoals.

The Power of Economic Mobility

Economic mobility refers to the idea that each generation can expect to achieve better opportunities and more financial stability than the one before. Today’s youth are growing increasingly skeptical of this possibility, and for good reason: they see that even many college graduates are underemployed and strug-

glingtofindtheirfeet.

There’s no denying the game has changed. However, upward economic mobility is still within reach for students who are willing to learn the new rules, especially if they have parents and educators supporting their journeys. With or without a college degree, students who engage with their communities, believe in their own potential and focus on building transferable personal and entrepreneurial skills can find themselves well-positioned tonavigateachangingworld.

How to Grow Entrepreneurial Skills

Topics like financial literacy and business acumen can be taught in a variety of ways both in and out of the classroom. Other key entrepreneurial skills - like leadership, confidence, work ethic, creativity and critical thinking - are more like muscles that get stronger when they’re trained. While academics are still important, hands-on opportunities and expe-

riences are invaluable parts of the equation to prepare students for economic success. Take programs like Future Bound by Junior Achievement, for example, which is an immersive annual event designed to empower high school students with essential skills and opportunities to innovate. Participants put their intelligence, creativity and ambition to the test during four team competitions where they can showcase and hone realworld business and economic skills. Winners receive national honors, awards, scholarships and prizes from event sponsors, including Pacific Life Foundation and Staples, among others. Plus, all attendees get the chance to network with industry leaders from around the country, participate in workshops and connect withotherfuture-focusedteens.

For summer hosts across the country, few pairings are as timeless and crowdpleasing as wine and cheese. Approachable, easy to find and naturally complementary, these warm-weather favorites are a perfect fit for a variety of occasions.

At the end of the day, summer entertaining is about good food, good wine and creating a space where people feel welcome, according to sommelier Sam Capaldi, whose mission is to make wine funandapproachable.

“My ideal celebration is pretty simple: a few loved ones gathered on the patio, cheese boards in the center of the table, bottles of wine chilling on ice, music playing in the background and a card game that somehow gets way more competitive thananyoneexpected,”Capaldisaid.

Whether it’s a backyard gathering with friends, a solo night watching realityTV or a spontaneous evening, Capaldi wants hosts to remember that the best pairings aren’t just what’s in the glass and on the board - it’s the people, moments and memoriesthatcomewiththem.

In partnership with Cracker Barrel Cheese, Capaldi is sharing simple tips for hosts looking to elevate their summer soireeswithoutthehassle.

Make Entertaining Simple and Fun

The pressure to create the perfect tablescape, prepare an impressive meal and uncork an expensive bottle of wine can feel overwhelming. Instead, a simple text that says “Come over, I have wine and snacks,” can mean the world to a close friendorlovedone.

One of Capaldi’s favorite reminders for hosts is they don’t need five different wines to serve alongside a cheese board. Instead, one or two are often more than enough. The key is choosing versatile wines that pair well with a variety of flavorsandtextures.

Elevate any gathering with some of Capaldi’s favorite approachable wine and Cracker Barrel Cheese pairings such as:

• A refreshing white wine, Sharp White Cheddar drizzled with spicy honey and potato chips. The bright acidity of the wine cuts through the salty chips and rich, savory cheese, creating a fresh and balanced bite.

• A fruity rose, Extra Sharp Yellow and Sharp White Cheddar, garlic naan crackers, slices of prosciutto and a spoonful of strawberry jam. Rose is incredibly versatile and plays well with the different flavors on the board, making it a perfect match for several different cheeses.

• Pinot grigio, pretzels and Vermont Sharp White Cheddar. The citrus notes and the bright acidity of pinot grigio cut through the richness of sharp cheddar, while its crisp finish keeps your palate refreshed between bites. Salty pretzels also help highlight the wine’s fruit notes, making every sip taste a little brighter.

Use Seasonal Additions for a Special Touch

Summer offers an abundance of fresh produce and seasonal flavors that can elevate any gathering without overcomplicating the occasion. Capaldi recommends adding frozen fruit to wine, such as strawberries, peaches or mangos to whites and roses. The fruit helps keep the wine cold without watering it down and adds a subtleburstoffruitflavor.

When it comes to cheese spreads, a jar of spicy honey can quickly become a goto ingredient. For a sweet-and-salty combination, try drizzling spicy honey over cheese then pair with potato chips or pretzels so your snack board offers a little bitofeverything.

Former Navy Officer Brings The American Revolution’s Overlooked Southern Campaign To Life

The American Revolution may have begun in New England, but it was in the violent southern provinces where its outcome was ultimately decided. Former U.S. Naval Officer Ray Deptula shines a light on that often-overlooked chapter of history in Can’t Find My Way Home, the second installmentinDeptula’sThoseDamnedYankeesseries.

Drawing on meticulous historical research and the actual sequence of Revolutionary War events, Deptula follows British deserter Jack Halliday and his companion, Custis, an enslaved man, as they become separated from the Continental Army after the devastating Battle of Camden and struggle to survive the lawless violence of South Carolina, where neighbor turned against neighbor and rival militias wagedsomeoftheugliestfightingoftheRevolution.

“Service in the military is enduring in that the motivation to withstand hardships comes not from political ideology but rather the love of your comrades,” Deptula said. “Can’t Find MyWay Home deals primarily with the relationship between Jack and the slave, Custis, to whom Jack feels a moral obligationtoprotectfornootherreasonthanheisJack’sfriend.”

Can’t Find My Way Home finds Jack Halliday and Custis serving with the Continental Army after enduring the harsh winter of 1780-81 atWashington’s army encampment in New Jersey. When spring arrives, they are swept into the Battle of Camden, where the Continental forces are decimated by the British, and along with it, the American hopes of ridding the southernprovincesofBritain’snewanddangerousfoothold.

Separated from their army and lost in the volatile South, the unlikely pair must survive together in a world where trust is scarce, and Custis’ value as property continually tests Jack’s moral compass. Their desperate struggle to find safety andreturnhomeinspiredthetitleCan’tFindMyWayHome.

With precision and perspective, Deptula taps into timeless concepts such as human nature and moral survival, offering a powerful reminder that yesterday’s conflicts continue to shape today’s world — and that history seems destined to repeatitself.

They Fought for This Country.

They Shouldn’t Have to Leave It to Heal.

Veterans with severe PTSD and depression are increasingly traveling overseas for treatments they cannot legally access in theUnitedStates.

After exhausting medications and conventional treatments, many are traveling to clinics in countries like Mexico to pursue psychedelic-assisted treatments. Others are seeking underground providersoutsideanyregulatedmedicalsystem.

That should concern everyone -- not because these treatments are necessarily unsafe, but because Veterans are being pushed outside the safeguards of the American healthcare system to access

Many of these clinics operate outside the oversight and safeguards of the U.S. medical system. As CBS News has reported, there are no standardized health screenings before treatment, required monitoring protocols, or requirements to track adverse effects. That wouldn’t be the caseonAmericansoil.

It is time to create a safe, regulated pathway for Veterans to access these medicines within the protections of the Americanmedicalsystem.

For decades, skepticism surrounding psychedelic compounds largely shut down research in the United States. But over the past twenty years, that has begun to change. Major academic institutions have restarted carefully controlled clinical studies.

Governments and regulators are beginning to respond. In 2023, Australia became the first country to permit limited clinical use of MDMA and psilocybin under strict psychiatric supervision. U.S. policymakers have recently shown greater openness to expanding psychedelicresearch.

Strong At Every Age: How Women Can Help Combat Muscle Loss

Aging is inevitable, but losing muscle and mobility doesn’t have to be. For many women, maintaining strength, independence, energy and mobility are top priorities as they get older, particularly as they deal with the mental and physical responsibilities that come with working, caregiving, keeping up with friends, hobbies and enjoyinganactivelifestyle.

In fact, 58% of women in the United States are actively focused on staying healthy as they age, according to a recent survey commissioned by Viactiv, a line of award-winning supplements for women known for their unique formats and flavors. However, 73% of respondents weren’t aware of sarcopenia, or agerelated muscle loss. According to the “International Journal of Women’s Health,” age-related muscle loss often begins between ages 30-35, with women losing 3-8% of their muscle mass per decade and increasing to 5-10% loss per decadeafterage60.

Hormonal changes, decreased activity levels, stress, poor sleep and inadequate nutrition can all contribute to the decline in muscle, which can also negatively impact balance, bone health, metabolism, postureandeverydaymobility.

Yet, despite 70% of women reporting

some level of concern about muscle loss, 54% are unsure how to protect their musclehealth.

“Women want to stay strong, active and independent as they age, but many are getting mixed messages about what actually supports long-term muscle health,” said Dr. Tania Elliott, a dual board-certified physician in internal medicine. “A lot of women are already making healthy choices like walking and staying active, which is a great start. However, maintaining muscle health really requires a more complete approach, and one that starts earlier than most womenthink,whichisinyour30s.”

Prioritize Strength Training

Many women report barriers such as lack of time (15%), feeling overwhelmed (23%) or simply not enjoying exercise (23%).The key is finding realistic, sustainable habits. While walking and cardio exercise aid in heart health, which 58% of survey respondents report already engaging in, strength training is one of the most effective ways to preserve and build muscle as you age. Still, just 34% of women report doing strength or resistance training.

You don’t need an intense fitness regimen to support healthy aging. Aiming for

at least two strength-focused workouts a week - lifting weights, using resistance bands, practicing weight-bearing yoga or doing bodyweight exercises like squats and pushups - that target major muscle groups can help maintain muscle health. The goal is to fatigue your muscles during setssotheybuild.

Fuel Muscles with Proper Nutrition

Exercise is only part of the equation. Muscles also need proper nutrition to recover and stay strong. Protein plays a critical role in maintaining muscle mass, especially as women age. Incorporating high-quality protein throughout the day, such as eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, lean meats, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds, may help support muscle repair and overall strength.

Support Healthy Aging with Supplements

In addition to a balanced diet and exercise, some women may consider supplements that support healthy aging and energy production, including CoQ10, which is a naturally occurring antioxidant that helps cells produce energy. According to research published in “The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging,” because muscles require significant energy to function, CoQ10 shows potential for man-

aging sarcopenia by improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress. An option like Viactiv CoQ10 Cardio Complete, available in a tasty fruitflavored chew, can help support heart health, muscles, nerve function and daily energy. Enhanced with vitamins D3 and K2, it provides daily essential nutrition for women without the need to swallow a largepill.

Practice Healthy Habits

Muscle health is influenced by more than workouts. Sleep, stress management and daily movement all play important roles. Adopting some simple habits, including prioritizing quality sleep, stretching regularly, staying properly hydrated, reducing sedentary time throughout the day and practicing stressmanagement techniques, like yoga, meditation or deep breathing, can help aid in healthy aging, including maintaining muscle.

The earlier women begin prioritizing muscle health, the better positioned they may be to maintain strength and mobility as they age. Visit: www.Viactiv.com for more information and resources to help combatmuscleloss.

How To Protect Yourself From A Smartphone Scam

The first sign is unexpectedly losing access to your cell phone. Soon after, when you connect to Wi-Fi, the gravity of the situation sinks in: a criminal has gained access to your cell phone number and is trying to siphon money from your creditcardsandbankaccounts.

The scam is called SIM swapping, or SIM hijacking, and it’s a concern for law enforcement in the United States and abroad as more than 5,000 people have reported SIM swapping scams to the FBI since 2022. Older adults, caregivers and families can benefit from understanding the warning signs of SIM swapping and taking simple security steps to prevent it fromhappening.

How SIM swapping works

A SIM card, or its digital version known as an eSIM, helps connect a phone number to a carrier network. In a SIM swapping scam, a criminal collects basic information about their victim, such as their name, birthdate and address, to try to move the victim’s phone number to a SIM cardoreSIMprofilethecriminalcontrols.

Once complete, the scammer gains access to accounts you may be logged into on your phone, such as bank accounts or credit card apps, without touchingyourphoneorbeingnearyou.

How to protect yourself from SIM swapping scams

Preparation is the best protection against SIM swapping. Cell phone users should use strong, unique passwords for

each online account - password managers are a helpful tool in creating complex and randomized passwords. Use two-factor authentication where it’s offered; this adds an extra layer of security when accessingsensitiveaccounts.

Next, consumers should protect personal information they share online, whether on Social Media or in texts or emails asking for identifying data, such as PIN numbers, birthdates or one-time

security codes. Be wary of anyone pushing you to share personal information, particularly if they’re pushy with their requestormakeitsoundurgent.

Check your mobile carrier to see if it offers SIM protection. For example, Verizon customers can toggle on a protection feature on the carrier’s website or app to lock lines on their account to help preventSIMchanges.

If you get an unprompted notification that your SIM has been changed, or otherwise suspect you’ve been targeted in a SIM swapping scam, contact your banks immediately and have them freeze your accounts, including ones the criminals may not have targeted yet. Next, work with your cell phone provider to help regain access to your mobile device. If you’re able, share as much information as possible with law enforcement so they can investigate, or at least document trends, inhowoftenthisscamoccurs.

Water Worries: The Dangers Of Dehydration In Pets

The summer heat can be unrelenting, sending pets who usually run straight to their owners after being outside in search of their water bowls instead. Rehydrating after playtime is important, so if a pet does not have proper access — or a desire to seek out — water, their owner must step in before their companion’s health is atrisk.

Dr. Sarah Manning, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, provides insight on how to ensure pets maintain the proper level of hydrationasthetemperaturecontinuesto rise.

Why Water Matters

Hydration is a basic necessity for a pet’s daily well-being, with water intake playing an important role in bodily functions such as:

•Digestion

•Jointmobility

•Organfunction

•Regulatingbodytemperature

However, the amount of water needed depends on the species and size of the animal.

“A cat should drink about a cup of waterperday,”Manningsaid.

When considering dogs’ year-round hydration needs, body shapes and sizes arefactorsthatmustbeconsidered.

“For dogs weighing less than 50 pounds, it is advised to intake up to 5 cups of water per day; dogs greater than 50 pounds need upwards of 10 cups per day,” Manning said. “However, when they start to get hot and exercise, they will needmorewater.”

Owners must actively make hydration a priority, as the complications caused by dehydration can become life-threatening overtime.

Pets not properly hydrated, especially in the summer, are at risk for serious complications, including:

•Heatstroke

•Kidneyfailure

•Neurologicalissues

•Hypovolemicshock—atypeofcritical bodystatethatoccurswhenthebody losestoomuchfluidvolume(likein severedehydrationormajorbloodloss), whichcanleadtoorganfailure

Signs of Dehydration

The key to detecting early signs of dehydrationresidesinapet’smouth.

“You can check their mucus membrane — the pink tissue underneath their lips and over their teeth,” Manning said.

“If it feels very sticky to the touch, that’s a sign that they’re getting a little dehydrated. You would hope that their gums would be really slick with saliva, but if it’s dry and sticking to you, that’s going to be aproblem.”

Another way you can check for dehydration is by gently pinching the skin on the back of their neck and lifting it uptocreateatent-likeshape.

“In a well-hydrated animal, that skin tent should drop right back down,” Manning said. “In an animal that’s starting to get dehydrated, it’ll stay in place a little before it slowly starts to return down.”

When dehydration becomes severe, owners may notice a decline intheirpet’soverallwell-being.

“They may appear to not be feeling well,” Manning said. “They won’t be as active and may not wanttoeatordrink.”

Dental Disease, nausea, an unclean water bowl, Arthritis, or more serious illnesses could be additional explanations for a pet’s avoidancetodrinkingwater.

Contacting a veterinarian when concerns arise is important to determine whether the issue is behavioral or related to an underlyingproblem.

Methods To Help

For pets who are picky or avoid daily hydration, Manning says there arestrategiesthatcanhelp.

“Typically, owners choose to flavor the water or make the experienceofdrinkingfuninsomeway,” Manning said. “One technique to flavor water is called ‘water baiting,’ which means adding a supplement to the water to encourage consumption. For example, owners can mix a tablespoon or two of wet food into the watertogettheirpettodrinkmore.”

key.”

Another way to increase hydration is through diet. Wet food contains more moisture and can boost overall water intake, though many animals have set preferences when it comes to a wet or dry fooddiet.

“Dry foods don’t have much moisture

preferences — at least with cats,” Manning said. “Dogs tend to be better drinkers on their own. In the sense of summertime activities and heat, though, we sometimes don’t fully recognize that theymightwanttodrinkmore.”

With hydration — as well as any aspect of care — an owner should carefully

Meeting the basic needs of a furry companion comes from taking the time to understand how they prefer to eat, drink, and play.

When “water baiting” is not feasible, engaging dogs with moving water can encouragethemtodrink.

“Some dogs really like to play with the water hose, and inherently, when you’re playing with the water hose, they’re going to drink some of the water at the same time,”Manningsaid.

Cats, on the other hand, can be more particular.

“Some cats prefer water that’s in a nice big bowl; some cats prefer water that’s moving — such as from a fountain,” Manning said. “So, having different types of water out and available for them is the

to them, whereas a large component of wet foods is water,” Manning said. “With that said, you can always add water to a dry food and that kibble will soak it up. With the cans of wet food, you can add additional water and make it more of a soup-typeconsistency.”

Before choosing a hydration strategy, consult with a veterinarian to determine whichoptionbestservesyourpet.

Pinpointing Preferences

Meeting the basic needs of a furry companion comes from taking the time to understand how they prefer to eat, drink, andplay.

“I think an owner’s mistakes with hydration can come from not recognizing

monitor their pet’s well-being and intervenewhennecessary.

“Some dogs might try to drink a lot of water all at once when they are dealing with heat stress and that can actually make them throw up, which makes them sicker,” Manning said. “Encouraging steady hydration throughout the day and being proactive with hydration measures are what’s most important to prevent dehydrationandfurtherbodilyharm.”
