To achieve the title ofYouth of theYear on any level, Club members must embody the values of leadership and service, academic excellence and a healthy lifestyle. They should exemplify the critical impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people. The scoring includes candidate essays, an interview, a speech, letters of recommendation and overall applicationquality.
Garcia, a senior at Miami Beach Senior High School, is a member of the South Beach Club. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Garcia has made a lasting impact at the Club by speaking up for others, fostering a positive environment and stepping up as a leader. He participated in Project Blue Whale, which deepened his commitment to leadership, and took part in Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s annual “Wild About Kid” Gala and Claws forKids.
Beyond the Club, Garcia serves as President of the 5,000 Role Models, is a member of the Student Government Association and the Yearbook Club and was part of the varsity football team. He carries a 3.8 GPA and is set to graduate in June2026.
Garcia has been accepted to Suffolk University, with additional college deci-

sions still pending. He hopes to attend Boston College or Louisiana State University, where he plans to major in business marketing. His long-term goal is to hold a position as Head of Marketing, President or CEO of a Fortune 500 company. “Being involved in Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade means having a place that I can call a second home, a place where I can grow as a leader and be able to support and give back to the community and others,” said Garcia. “I want to continue using my voice to advocate for others and inspire the people around me. My goal is to keep growing as a leader and make a positive impact wherever I go.”
“Sebastian is a shining example of what it means to be a Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade member,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade President Alex Rodriguez-Roig. “He has demonstrated outstanding leadership, a deep commitment to his community and an unwavering drive to succeed. We are incredibly

proud to name him our 2026 Youth of the Year and look forward to watching him represent Boys & Girls Clubs of MiamiDade at the state level.” Garcia and other teens from Florida Boys & Girls Clubs competed for the 2026 Florida Youth of the Year title. The winner of the state title received a $2,500 scholarship, laptop and printer. Every year since 1955, youth from various Boys & Girls Clubs across Florida have competed for the opportunity to represent Florida as the Florida Youth of theYear. The winner of the state title then competes in the regional competition. Five regional winners then move on, and one is named the Boys & Girls Clubs of AmericaNationalYouthoftheYear.
The National Youth of the Year serves as both an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Clubs youth and as a strong voice for all the nation’s young people. He/she receives a new car courtesy of Toyota, as well as scholarships and cash totaling $60,000. The National Youth of the Year, along with the other four

regional runners-up, then travel to Washington, D.C. and speak to members of Congress and meet the President of the UnitedStates.

The Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture just released the 2025 - 2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, resetting the federal nutrition advice that shapes how Americans eat. As a physician, I have seen firsthand how federal recommendations emphasizing low-fat, carbohydrate-heavy diets coincided with skyrocketing rates of obesityanddiet-relateddisease.
Against that record, the updated guidelines represent a much-needed coursecorrection.
By refocusing on whole foods from both plant and animal sources, the guidance centers nutrient density and food quality -- recognizing vegetables and fruits alongside meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy as core components of a healthy diet. That emphasis on real, whole foods is reinforced by a restoration of protein to a central role. Treated for years as secondary to carbohydrate intake, the updated guidelines recognize protein’s importance in preserving lean muscle, supporting metabolic health, improving
satiety,andpromotinghealthyaging.
The guidelines also take a more direct approach to refined carbohydrates and added sugars by more clearly acknowledging the metabolic risks of their excess intake.
In fact, for the first time, the guidelines explicitly acknowledge that Americans with certain chronic diseases may benefit from therapeutic low-carbohydrate dietary approaches. That recognition aligns with decades of evidence demonstrating improvement -- and in many cases reversal -- of conditions such as Obesity,Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Fatty Liver Disease.
This shift is particularly important given today’s health landscape. More than 75% of U.S. adults are overweight or have Obesity. Roughly 93% show signs of metabolic dysfunction, and nearly one in three adolescentshasprediabetes.
With that in mind, the focus now turns to implementation. That work should include clearer guidance on tailoring fat, protein, and carbohydrate intake to individualneeds.
This need for clarity is especially evident when it comes to dietary fat. The guidelines’ emphasis on whole, nutrientdense foods -- including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy -- is welcome. At the same time, the long-standing recommendation to limit saturated fat to 10% of daily calories -- which these guidelines retained -- will require careful interpretation in the context of whole food sources and overall dietarypatterns.
For Americans following lowercarbohydrate approaches, who rely more heavily on protein and fats for energy as they reduce carbohydrate intake, rigid fat caps can make these diets harder to follow.
Other areas would also benefit from continued refinement. The updated guidelines still recommend two to four servings of grains per day. In practice, particularly within federal programs, this can shape implementation choices that favor refined and processed grain products over trulyfiber-richwholefoods.
On the implementation side, a similar opportunity exists with added sugars.
While the new guidelines don’t outright ban added sugars, they clarify that no amount is recommended as part of a healthy diet. Ideally, school lunch programs should respond by further limiting sweetened cereals, sugary yogurts, and flavored milk, especially as childhood obesityandmetabolicdiseaserise.
The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines mark real progress. They recognize the central role of diet quality, acknowledge the importance of metabolic health, and move federal nutrition policy closer to what modern science and clinical experiencesupport.
The task now is to build on that progress through thoughtful implementation and continued refinement. Nutrition policy should help Americans prevent and manage chronic disease -- and these guidelines provide a strong foundation to doso.

The Doral opening signals the cul-

mination of years of hard work by Founders Terry Lee and Adam Flierl, who first partnered up in 2020 and began the process of developing what would become PLAY Sporting Lounge. In fact, though the CityPlace Doral opening is considered the flagship location, it is, in actuality, the second location. In 2019, as he was seeking what would become the Doral space, Lee and his business partner, Adam Flierl, a restaurant industry veteran, would be offered a prime, albeit smaller, space at none other than Hollywood, Florida’siconicSeminoleHardRockHotel & Casino. Here, they would launch a retro-fitted version of PLAY Sporting Lounge, simply called PLA Sports Bar, which would go on to become their wildly successful first location. “The opportunity at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was an unexpected blessing,” says Flierl, who has held executive roles at concepts such asTopgolf and Roy’s Restaurants and is uniquely skilled at balancing high volume sales with top notch food & drink and entertainment. “It was too good an opportunity to pass up and, although our opening and COVID-19 were ill-timed, it ended up being an amazing opportunity for us to develop much of what went into PLAY and helped us double-down on our commitment to community engagement.” Fun fact: the Doral location is more than three times the size of its Hollywoodsibling.
In fact, even before PLAY (or PLA for that matter) was a reality, Lee and Flierl knew that the concept they were imagining would be borne from the philosophy of PLAY, LOVE, ACT. “Our goal was to create a place that would allow us and the team to have fun (PLAY), be respected and give respect (LOVE) and be of service to the community (ACT). Everything came from that.” So much so they
launched the PLA IT FORWARD Foundation, a non-profit/community engagement arm of the F&B concept dedicated to helping underprivileged youth through sports. For more information on the Foundation, please visit: https://plaitforward.org/.
PLAY Sporting Lounge is open Monday through Thursday, 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.; Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, brunch is served 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; closing times are 2:30 a.m. on Saturday and 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. Welcome back to Keller’s Korner. Another thrilling World Baseball Classic has wrapped up, with the semi-finals and finals taking place at loanDepot Park in Miami. In a dramatic championship game, Eugenio Suarez delivered a clutch RBI double in the top of the ninth to lift Venezuela to a 3–2 victory overTeam USA. A lively crowd of 36,490 watched the action, including a two-run homer from Bryce Harper. But as always in Keller’s Korner, I research the Jewish angle and must ask: How did the Jewish players performatthe2026WBC?
Jewish Players Around the Tournament Team USA – Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman of the Chicago Cubs represented Team USA but struggled at the plate, going 2-for-14 for a .143 average. Several other Jewish American Major Leaguers—including Max Fried of the New York Yankees—opted not to participateinthisyear’stournament.
Team Mexico – Rowdy Tellez
Rowdy Tellez, whose mother is Jewish and father is of Mexican descent, played first base for Team Mexico. Now with the Atlanta Braves, Tellez finished the tournament hitting .111 (1-for-9) with two walksandtwostrikeouts.
Team Israel: A Tournament to Be Proud Of Team Israel entered Pool D facing a gauntlet of powerhouse teams— Venezuela and the Dominican Republic— along with Nicaragua and the Netherlands. Despite having fewer Major Leaguers than their opponents, Israel exceeded expectations and finished third in the pool with a 2–2 record, securing automaticqualificationforthe2030WBC.
Brad Ausmus, former All-Star catcher and current New York Yankees bench coach, managed the squad. He told MLB.com that the team felt tremendous supportthroughoutthetournament:
“We see everything up on the scoreboard — people wearing Israeli T-shirts or holding the Israeli flag. The hope is more players become interested in playing for Israel. Every time an Israeli team wins a baseball game in a big tournament like this, ithelps.”
Israel’s roster featured MLB players Dean Kremer, Harrison Bader, Spencer Horwitz, Garrett Stubbs, and Robert Stock, along with a strong supporting cast. Ausmus, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Marquis, and others brought invaluable MajorLeagueexperiencetothedugout.

Randi Salko - COO in Boca Raton
Inspired by her father’s love of the BrooklynDodgers.

Final Thoughts
Every player, coach, and fan I met radiated pride and passion for Team Israel. Their 2–2 finish, their resilience, and their spirit made this WBC a meaningful success. With continued growth and visibility, I expect Jewish players to make an even bigger impact at the 2030 World Baseball Classic.

Welcome back to Keller’s Korner. It was a special night recently at the FIU Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach, where I had the privilege of meeting Olympian Jared Firestone. Jared, a 36 year old Miami native who represented Israel in the 2026 Winter Olympics, was donating the speed suit he wore in the Olympic sport of skeleton — a powerful symbol of identity, perseverance, andJewishpride.
For years, many Jewish boxers wore a “Star of David” on their trunks when they got into the ring. Jared has become well known for competing with a Star of David on his helmet as he wants to bring Jewish pridetotheworld.

At the 2022 Winter Games, Jared came heartbreakingly close to qualifying. Instead of discouraging him, it fueled him. He doubled down, trained harder, and ultimately earned his place at the 2026Olympics.
How does a kid born in Miami end up flying headfirst down an icy track at 80 mphinthesportofskeleton?
“It was my dream to represent Israel,” Jared told me. “I ran track at Tulane after being the Broward County sprint champion. I went to law school at Cardozo in

Jared’s mother, Karen Firestone, sharedheremotions:

A Suit That Represents More Than a Sport
Jared closed his speech with a message thatresonatedwitheveryoneintheroom:
“I wore this suit not just at the World Championships, but at the Olympic Games.”
He did not want to lift only himself — he wanted to lift all Jewish people. And because Miami Beach believed in his dream, he wanted the Jewish Museum of Florida to have the suit that carried him —andIsrael—ontotheworldstage.

“I’m grateful to Miami Beach for awarding me a grant to compete,” Jared said. “I wanted to give back to the community.”
His speech at the museum was heartfelt and deeply moving. He spoke about Miami Beach’s history — once a place that discriminated against Jews — and how meaningful it was to stand there as a proudJewishOlympian.
Then he said a line that silenced the room:
“I was bringing a country with little history in the sport, and no Infrastructure to support it, all the way to the Olympic Games, where I was able to proudly display the Magen David on my helmet, for millionstosee.”
