Drawbacks Of Hiring Your Own Aide By Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care - Aventura Digest
This one is the most frequently asked question I am asked: Why should I go through an agency when I can hire my own aide and pay less per hour? Remember the age-old adage “You get what you pay for”? You may pay less for your aide hourly, but when you hire independently, do you really know what you are getting yourself into? These are just a few of the complaints that I have heard from patients who contacted us: • Things seem to disappear too often • She didn’t listen to what I wanted • She got so bossy that I felt like I was the employee • With her problems, I felt that I needed to help her with extra money • She kept coming late and leaving early • She was on her cell phone all the time • She was nervous driving to unfamiliar addresses, even to the doctor • She did not cook the way I like and would not listen to my suggestions • She didn’t buy the brands or cuts of meat that I wanted • She didn’t dress appropriately and when we went out, I was embarassed. With our agency, as with any other legitimate agency, we do not stand for any complaints, NOT ANY.
• Our aides are professionally trained with documentation and references carefully checked • All aides and nurses have been screened by the FBI with confirmation that they have no criminal records • A registered nurse opens each case to assess the exact needs of the new client • The client and/or family is interviewed for specifications and expectations • Staff carefully matches an aide to the personality and needs of the client • If the match is not perfect, staff will make changes immediately. You definitely can hire whomever you like. However, you should consider the following carefully: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? How do you know? • Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? By hiring through an agency, you can be certain that liability covering the aide is in place. • Does your aide have a legal right to work in this country? That translates to a Green Card, Permanent Residency or actual citizenship. • Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes? Our agency does. We report and we pay, as good citizens should.
Many people are unaware of their responsibility to IRS when hiring a household employee, or of the aide’s legitimate status to work in the US. Our aides are our employees and we report their earnings and our share to the IRS. Protect yourself by preventing problems. An agency is your safest way to go. Even the home health aides know that, and although they accept statewide standard rates that may be lower than what they could get from the client privately, reputable aides know that by working through reputable agencies, they also are protected and can be steadily employed with respect. CITY NEWS Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning has never stopped making a difference By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest
While his skills on the basketball court paved his way for a place in the Hall of Fame on August 8th, Alonzo Mourning’s upbringing and compassion for others has made him an icon in south Florida. Raised in Virginia and educated at prestigious Georgetown University, Mourning has always been at the center of making a difference in the lives of others - as a community activist and champion for children’s services. Recently, he secured a $1 million grant from a healthcare conglomerate and has been implementing plans to use the funds for his Overtown Youth Center. What has made Mourning so special through the years is his willingness to do for others. From education to a greater appreciation for the little things in life, his maturity came at a young age when he was raised by a foster mother, Fannie Threet, who took him and 48 other kids into her home. Nba Career Started In 1992 Mourning was the second pick in the 1992 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets, where he played for three successful seasons. In 1995, he became a member of the Miami Heat, where he played for seven years. Through his leadership, the Miami Heat went on to win several Eastern division titles. His on-court reputation as a highly respected defensive force and offensive threat, lead to his selection to join other elite NBA players on the 2000 United States Olympic basketball team. Mourning’s basketball resumé speaks for itself. He was a seven-time All-Star, two-time defensive player of the year, Olympic Gold medalist and a member of the Heat’s 2006 championship team. He played during an era that featured some of the all-time greatest centers in Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson
and Shaquille O’Neal. He was one of the best big men of the last few decades, combining a strong offensive game with a tenacious defensive presence. He went to the All-Star Game seven times, won Defensive Player of the Year twice, and named to the All-NBA First Team in 1999. Life Changing Kidney Transplant It was 2000 and Mourning was on top of the world. He was the NBA’s defensive player of the year, gold medalist for the USA in the Sydney Olympics, and a proud new father. Following a routine preseason physical, a phone call from his doctor woke Mourning to stunning news. That news was that he had a rare kidney disorder called focul lumeriosclerosis. It’s a disease that scars and deteriorates the filters in the kidney. While the news was indeed daunting and left he and his wife with that uncertain feeling about the future, staying strong and positive and learning everything they could about the disease was important. Armed with knowledge and aided by medication and a positive outlook, Mounring returned to the basketball court five months later. He would go on to play 100 games over the next few seasons. But then while preparing for a team road trip, he got more bad news from his doctor. He could no longer avoid a kidney transplant. The time has come for him to start the process, finding a donor and getting the procedure done. He found a donor, his distant cousin Jason Cooper, and within a few weeks, he was scheduled for surgery. Cooper, who gave Mourning his left kidney in 2003, was among the first people Mourning called to invite to the Hall of Fame ceremony. Threet, his foster mother since he was 12 years old and who passed away, was certainly another that was huge

in his life. Community Has Been Important Mourning is an advocate for youth initiatives and programs that assist youth that are traditionally underserved. He is a sought-after speaker, engaging audiences of all ages and sizes on the importance of education, leadership and perseverance. Mourning has received numerous honors for his charitable efforts including the Urban League of Greater Miami’s Plaque of Appreciation for Outstanding Dedication, Support, & Commitment in 2010; Haitian American Leadership Coalition’s Unsung Hero Award in 2010; Black Health Magazine’s Black Health Spirit Award in 2010; NBA’s Community Assist Award in 2006 and 2008; NBA’s J. Walter Kennedy Sportsmanship Award in 2002; The Children’s Trust Excellence Award for Public Policy in 2007. Many Who Deserve The Credit As he stood on the podium, Mourning, 44, never at a loss for words, knew exactly who made his rise to one of the best ever, possible. Heat president Pat Riley, who showed him how to be a professional and the right way to become a champion - on and off the court - was easily a central figure in his life. His head coach and mentor at Georgetown, John Thompson was a large part in helping him understand that basketball was temporary. He showed him that the life after the sport was over would define you as a person, father and as a
husband. Learning to survive outside the game of basketball because one day was what it’s all about. Also, Cooper and Threet, who stepped up and never hesitated making a difference in his life. People who never questioned, but always put life into perspective. As he said in his always lengthy but never forgetting anyone or anything speech: “I’m not going into the Hall of Fame alone,” he explained. “I’m really taking in so many people that helped contribute to my well-being, not just as a professional athlete but as a person. I’m very thankful for the opportunities, and how each of those individuals gave me a piece of themselves throughout my life.” School Named In His Honor While Mourning’s name has always been popular around the NBA, his work in promoting education was rewarded when the Miami-Dade County School Board voted to name a school in his and wife, Tracy’s honor. Located in North Miami, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High Biscayne Bay Campus is a secondary school which opened August 2009, built two blocks north of Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus. Built to relieve overcrowding at nearby Dr. Michael Krop and North Miami Beach high schools. The school locally serves all or portions of North Miami, North Miami Beach, Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach.

The 30 second skin renewal Whether you just need to wake up, or freshen up your skin, here’s the perfect 30-second skin renewal. Place a fresh hand towel under steaming hot water (not boiling—the hottest you get out of your tap is fine), then cover your entire face with it for 30 seconds. Then use the towel or a warm, wet washcloth to
buff your T-zone area (chin, nose, and forehead). For a finishing touch, splash cold water all over your face to leave your pores tight and tingling. Vitamin C You know that vitamin C is a dream immune booster; however it works great as a facial cleanser too. Get one of those vitamin C powders at any grocery/ drug store. Mix 1 ⁄ package with 1 tablespoon water. Scrub onto your skin, leave to dry, and then rinse. You can also add crushed-up vitamin c directly to your facial moisturizer. Treat A Skin Tear With Respect By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
As we age and lose collagen in the subdermal layers of our skin, we notice how the skin’s outer layer becomes crepelike and tears easily when brushing against a sharp edge. This was the recent case with a patient of mine, who had experienced a skin tear in a rehab just before I met her. Through lack of proper treatment at the rehab and minimal wound care ordered at home, her healing and circulation became compromised. When I became aware of her pain ten days later, and saw the state of her wound for the first time, I referred her to Dr. Charlton Adler, wound care specialist at both Aventura Hospital and the Memorial System, and accompanied her to her appointment. Dr. Adler pointed out how the edges of the skin tear had rolled under and new subdermal tissue was beginning to fill in the small cavity left by the tear and showed signs of entrapping the borders of the tear by growing over it. After anesthetizing the site, he gently began softening and restretching the rolled over skin, debrided the new dermal tissue that would have been excess, and surgically
placed the original skin flap over its natural area. He secured the flap with steristrips, covered with Tagaderm and left everything in place for a week to heal undisturbed. “It’s such a shame,” said Dr. Adler, “If the skin flap would have been placed on its site in the very beginning, the patient would not have been subjected to this pain, and it would have healed by now.” Wounds, even as superficial as a skin tear, should get professional attention when it comes to the elderly or with diabetics who heal poorly. The body’s healing capacity slows down with age and is complicated with diabetes. A simple skin tear can become infected or compromise circulation, as it did with this patient. Wounds should be cleaned and treated with an antiinfective cream or spray and covered to avoid contamination. Dressings should be changed daily unless specialty stay-in-place products are used after aseptic conditions are employed. And if the wound does not show signs of healing in a few days, please see a wound care specialist like Dr. Adler. Early professional attention can avoid
unnecessary pain, compromised healing, and a threat to one’s health. Dr. Adler performs vascular testing right in his office. He prescribes medications and exercise to improve circulation. The 5 nutritional supplements that should be on everyone’s shopping list (BPT) - Most American’s aren’t consuming enough nutrients from their daily diet. Only 1 percent of the population meets minimum standards of a balanced diet, according to a paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A well-chosen supplement can benefit many people, especially those who are dieting, older than age 50, pregnant or following an exercise regimen. “Many Americans are marginally deficient in one or more vitamins,” says Elizabeth Somer, a registered dietitian and the author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness.” “That means they consume enough to prevent the classic deficiency, but not enough to be optimally nourished. Osteoporosis is a good example. Only getting marginal levels of vitamin D over time can lead to a loss of calcium in your bones until they no longer can support your weight. Yet there are no telltale signs of a problem.” According to Somer, these five supplements should be on everyone’s shopping list: 1. Multiple vitamin. Nutrients are
supplied as teams in food, so if your diet is low in one nutrient, it’s a sure bet it’s low in others, too. A multiple is a convenient, inexpensive way to supply a balance of nutrients, while avoiding secondary deficiencies that result when you take too much of one nutrient and crowd out another. For quality sake, stick with the major brands or with a product with the USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia) quality seal that guarantees high standards. 2. Calcium and magnesium. You need calcium to keep your bones, skin, nerves and muscles in shape, while magnesium is critical for coping with stress, maintaining a healthy heartbeat and blood pressure. Unless you include at least three servings daily of calcium-rich milk products or fortified soymilk, and lots of magnesium-rich soybeans, nuts and wheat germ, you should supplement these two minerals. Calcium and magnesium are best absorbed and used when supplied in a 2:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. You get some of these minerals in your diet, so you only need to fill in the gaps by taking
a supplement with 500 milligrams of calcium and 250 milligrams of magnesium, if your multiple is low in these minerals. 3. DHA omega-3. If you don’t consume at least two servings a week of fatty fish (think salmon, mackerel or herring), then take an omega-3 supplement. You need at least 220 milligrams of the omega-3 DHA, and possibly up to 900 milligrams a day to help support brain health. A recent study from the University of Oxford found that supplementation of 600 milligrams of omega-3s, and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in particular, was associated with longer sleep duration - 58 minutes of more sleep per night - in a subset of children, compared to placebo. Omega-3s are important for women who are pregnant or nursing. DHA is a building block of a baby’s brain. In fact, 97 percent of the omega-3s found in the
brain is DHA. A vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA from algae can be found in supplement form. Look for the life’s DHA logo on the packaging to know you’re getting a vegetarian source. 4. Vitamin D. If you are an adult and your multi-vitamin or calcium supplement does not have at least 1000 IU of vitamin D, then consider a separate supplement since you can’t get enough from food. Optimal intake is associated with lowered risk for muscle weakness, gum disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, and certain cancers, including colon, breast, pancreas and prostate cancers. 5. Vitamin E. Vitamin E functions as the main fat-soluble antioxidant, protecting cells, tissues and organs from damage. It also contributes to healthy blood flow by regulating the opening of blood vessels and preventing cholesterol from building up on blood vessel walls. The research continues to show other roles for this essential nutrient, such as a recent study that showed vitamin E may positively impact functional performance among participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
