What Are Mini Dental Implants? The Mini Dental Implant (MDI) System consists of a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth and a retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture, The head of the implant is shaped like a ball and the retaining fixture acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring. The O-ring snaps over the ball when the denture is seated and holds the denture at a predetermined level of force. When seated, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue. The implant fixtures allow for micromobility while withstanding natural lifting forces. Is the Mini Dental Implant FDA approved? Yes, the product is safe for public use and in fact, has beneficial attributes, the FDA granted its formal consent to market the Mini Dental Implant device not only as a transitional or temporary dental product, but significantly, as a long-term item. IMTEC was the first company to receive long-term approval of its MDI implants from the FDA, and for several years, was the only company to have that distinction. When can Mini Dental Implants be used? CITY NEWS Why Job-Hunting Millennials Could Find A Perfect Match With The Federal Government The greying of the federal-government workforce could soon create a hiring crisis as a large swath of older workers retires in the coming years and a new generation declines to fill the breach. Simply put, most young people who are in job-search mode tend to look elsewhere, finding no motivation to vie for federal government positions that may strike them as more dreary than dazzling. “Millennials want to work some place that seems cool, like Google, or at least for a company with a recognizable name,” says Ann Vanderslice (www.annv anderslice.com), president and CEO of Retirement Planning Strategies, which specializes in advising federal workers about their benefits. “Not that the federal government isn’t a recognizable name. But it just seems bureaucratic to them, with lots of rules and structures.” The nonprofit group Partnership for Public Service reports that just 7 percent of federal government jobs are held by
millennials, even though they account for 23 percent of the overall U.S. workforce. In addition to preferring lessbureaucratic employers, millennials also are dissuaded by the online system for applying for federal employment, a website called USAJobs. Vanderslice describes USAJobs as a “hornets nest” of an application system. “It’s very cumbersome,” she says. “They get lost in it. And then, if you do finish the application, it can take six to nine months for the hiring process to play out. Most of them find other jobs in the meantime.” But if they’re willing to persist, millennials could find that employment with the federal government is more desirable than they realize. • Advancement opportunities. Federal jobs come with an enormous potential to move up quickly because about 30 percent of federal employees are eligible to retire right now, and likely will be retiring
in the next three to five years. They are holding higher positions that will suddenly open up, Vanderslice says. That means some young people who start at one of the entry-level positions could be making more than $80,000 in just three to five years. • Benefits. Federal employees enjoy exceptional benefits compared to many other workers. Not only do they have health benefits and paid holidays, they also have both the Thrift Savings Plan, a 401(k)-style plan, and a pension, something few private companies offer anymore. ”Millennials, unfortunately, often don’t understand the value of that,”
Vanderslice says. • Having an impact. Studies have shown that millennials prefer jobs with a purpose beyond making money. Employment with the federal government can provide just the opportunity they are looking for to make a positive difference in people’s lives. “Not only would millennials benefit from joining the federal government labor pool, but the government would benefit, too,” Vanderslice says. “Millennials could bring with them some of that youthful enthusiasm. They also tend to be technologically savvy. This is a potential match that would work well for both the employee and the employer.”

Dr. Dennis Fetch, a well-known optometrist in Broward County, had a lifetime of great vision and tremendous health. But just like anything else in our bodies, time catches up to us with our eyesight. Because he had spent over 35 years of his life dealing with patient’s eyes as a Fort Lauderdale optometrist, Dr. Fetch, who has been retired now for nine years, had a better understanding of what he was facing as he got older. “I have always been blessed to have had very good vision,” Dr. Fetch said. “But just like any of the patients that I had, when you reach a certain age, your eyes change.” Like many of his patients who faced that decision when developing cataracts or any other vision problems that come along with age, Dr. Fetch started to develop problems in his right eye. That is when he started to do his research on who he has sent his patients to in the past. “I thought the best way to find out about a doctor who I would choose would be based on the experiences my own patients had,” Dr. Fetch explained. “All the specialists that I send my patients to are good, but I was looking for one who
was consistent across the board.” The reputation that Dr. Stanley Braverman has had over the past three plus decades in south Florida was the name that came up the most. The decision had been made. “If you lived and worked down here as an optometrist for any length of time, Dr. Braverman was certainly a name that was well respected in the ophthalmic profession, Dr. Fetch pointed out. “His cutting edge approach has been recognized by so many, such as the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/ Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.” While he is retired, Dr. Fetch still remains busy, traveling between his home in south Florida and Albany, Ga. But in between all he had going on, in June, he made the appointment to have his cataract surgery with Dr. Braverman. Even though he knew much of what was going on - and being around the eyes much of his adult life - Dr. Fetch still listened to every word when Dr. Braverman and the staff had their initial consultation. “The entire experience - from the beginning was tremendous,” he said. “This was one of the best run offices I had
What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid
of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. 4 Tips For Making Your Retirement Savings Last Longer Many retirees and those nearing retirement express a common fear. They worry about running out of money; finding their bank account drained with years of life still ahead of them. “The reality is that a large percentage of Americans simply don’t have the kind of savings they need,” says Chuck Price, president of Price Financial Group Wealth Management Inc. (www.pfgwm.com) and author of “Investing Simplified: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You.” “When that’s the case, there are other strategies they’ll need to consider.” His suggestions for stretching retirement dollars as much as possible include: Work longer: Nothing says you have to stop working at a particular age. You can continue in your career, find a new one or just work part-time. Even temporary employment can help keep the cash flowing so you don’t have to tap into your savings too much. Cultivate alternative income streams: You can reduce your reliance on your retirement portfolio by cultivating
income streams. “This could be done through a side business or maybe by making investments outside your retirement portfolio that pay dividends,” Price says. “There are a number of ways you might be able to come up with some extra income.” Cut costs: Are there expenses you can get rid of if money becomes too tight? Maybe you don’t need to play golf every day or dine out so often. Are you paying for insurance on an extra car that you really don’t need anymore or for a motorcycle you rarely ride? “Retirement is supposed to be fun, I know, but in tough economic times you’ll have to make decisions,” Price says. “If your situation improves, you can add some of those luxuries back later.” Reconsider the financial help you give others: Older people often want to help their children and grandchildren financially, but you might need to cut back on your charity. “If your own survival and financial situation is being threatened, you need to pull back a bit,” Price says. “You’re trying to make your
money outlive you, so it might be necessary in times of economic turmoil to reduce how much you provide to others.” On the upside, Price says, it’s worth noting that expenses in retirement might not end up being as much as you think. “Most people spend less money as they get older because they stop driving, traveling and buying clothes,” Price says. “The main exception is, if there’s a need for long-term care, which can be very expensive. “But most of my clients in retirement,

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom
Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who
said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

Celebrating 21 years with the Annual Founders Day Celebration and Green Market Kick-Off By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest
As each year passes, the history of Aventura brings so many stories and stirs memories of the growth that has been part of south Florida’s elite landscape. Still one of the most prestigious addresses in southern Florida, Aventura has been one of those communities that has set standards - while attracting some of the most recognized developers, businesses and entertainment destinations anywhere. From that piece of land that sat east of U.S. 1 with so many plans for development, this is a community that grew and embraced the location and being that destination that many flock to from all over the world. On Sunday, Nov. 13, the City of Aventura celebrates its 21st anniversary of
incorporation - with its annual Founders Day celebration, including the kick-off of the City’s seasonal Green Market. The celebration and market will take place from noon – 5 PM at Founders Park located at 3105 NE 190 Street. “Having lived here for 20 years - and coming from up north, I cannot say how much I have enjoyed raising my family and living here in this beautiful and convenient city,” April Ramos said. “My husband and I embrace everything that has happened here over the years, and that includes this Founders Day event. We are 10 minutes from the beach and right in the heart of everything else.” From those days of the two and three condos that
were constructed in the late 1960s and into the early 70s, where Publix and a few other destinations started to pop up, many who have been around here for a long time, truly embrace what Aventura has become, and that is why this event is so important - to all. Remember, even before Aventura became a city, they had been part of the growth of Northeast Miami-Dade for decades. Kim Triana remembers those days. She grew up in North Miami during the 1960s and 70s - and even though Biscayne Blvd. was barely four lanes, it was still the main road from north to south. “There were those little mom and pop kind of stores all along US 1,” Triana recalled. “We had heard all about Aventura
and what they were planning - like a mall that would one day replace 163rd Street as a favorite spot. There were so many things planned - and as they became a reality becoming a city made a lot of sense.” Founders Day Has It All When you come to help celebrate the City’s 21st anniversary bash, you will see plenty. Recuerda que tu alimentación es más importante que estar a la moda o que verte bien superficialmente. 2. No omitas ningún tiempo de comida, incluso puedes realizar dos meriendas al día para mejorar tu digestión. Una de las excusas más frecuentes que escucho de mis pacientes es: “por mi trabajo no me queda tiempo de desayunar” o “como a la hora que sea, cuando me queda tiempo”, esta es una de las razones por las que a muchas personas les es difícil bajar de peso.
Aunque tu trabajo te demande mucho tiempo, siempre debes tomarte 15 o 20 minutos para comer (debes volver sagrado este tiempo). 3. Debes ser ordenado y establecer un horario de alimentación. Pregúntate ¿Cuánto tiempo te demoras para maquillarte o arreglar tu cabello? Puedes levantarte 25 minutos antes de lo habitual para preparar tu desayuno. Recuerda que respetar cada tiempo de comida es indispensable para lograr un peso saludable. 4. Necesitas dominio propio, disciplina, perseverancia y fuerza de voluntad para cambiar tus hábitos alimentarios. Si has sido capaz de crearte hábitos alimentarios inadecuados, también serás capaz de adoptar hábitos alimentarios saludables.
6. Aléjate de los alimentos que sabes que son tentación para ti. 7. Es indispensable que aumentes tu consumo de agua y que realices actividad física para lograr un peso saludable y mejorar tu salud. Si no puedes ir a un gimnasio, puedes ver o descargar videos sobre diferentes rutinas de ejercicios: aeróbicos, abdominales, glúteos, yoga, y realizarlos en casa por 30 minutos al día y progresivamente aumentar el tiempo, frecuencia y la intensidad.

Facebook es una palabra que en los últimos años acaparó muchos titulares en la prensa, relacionada con algunos eventos lamentables como menores de edad que extorsionan a sus compañeros en el colegio; depravados que captan a sus víctimas vía redes sociales, bullying escolar y hasta se volvió común que alguna conozcas alguna pareja que se haya separado por culpa de alguna foto o comentario desatinado en la red social. Gracias a este espacio, trataremos de utilizar el uso responsable del uso de internet, redes sociales y videojuegos. Son herramientas fundamentales, pasatiempos divertidos y hasta educativos. Pero siempre es bueno recordar que debemos estar atentos a lo que tus hijos hacen y publican cuando se encuentran navegando en la red. Debemos reforzar la idea de que no necesitamos volvernos expertos en tecnología ni “superdotado en computación”. Solo basta con estar convencidos de que nuestra mejor arma es el sentido común, nuestro buen juicio y sobre todo el diálogo familiar. Los cuidados que tuvimos en un mundo sin Internet son los mismos que debemos tener en estos tiempos modernos, en donde la conexión con dispositivos se incrementa día a día. Sería mejor no alcanzar a tus hijos pasatiempos que no están acorde con su edad*. Ya habrá tiempo para que lo disfruten. Facebook y Google solo permiten cuentas a preadolescentes a partir de los 13 años y tal vez, quizás, como muchos, sucumbiste ante la presión de tus niños y tuviste que mentir para ayudarlos a sacar un cuenta. El Programa de Visados de Diversificación de Inmigrantes (DV-2018) entrega al azar cada año 50.000 visas permanentes en un sorteo computarizado. Los permisos de residencia son entregados entre los países con escasa afluencia migratoria hacia los Estados Unidos, según indica el Departamento de Estado. Para esta ‘lotería de visas’, como también es conocido el programa, no podrán participar ciudadanos de países de la región como Brasil, Colombia, República Dominicana, El Salvador, Haití, México, Perú; ni de otros países como Bangladesh, Canadá, China, la India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Pakistán, Filipinas, Corea del Sur, Reino Unido (excepto Irlanda del Norte) y Vietnam. “La ley define como países de alto ingreso a aquellos que en los últimos cinco años han tenido un índice de inmigración de 50.000 personas o más hacia Estados Unidos en las categorías de visas, tanto familiares como de empleo”, dice el Departamento de Estado. Gorgeous Hair And The Search For An Eco-Friendly Dye Consumers determined to make environmentally friendly decisions whenever possible – even with beauty products – usually find that compromises are in order when they want to change the color of their hair. Opt for natural ingredients only and the color is temporary – and may not be the result you’re looking for, especially in terms of grey hair coverage. Choose a permanent dye that’s mass produced for at-home use and you’ll have to accept at least some chemicals, but you’re more likely to get the color you’re after and it will last much longer. “The question often comes down to just how many chemicals will be in the hair dye and what chemicals can be avoided,” says Paolo Tramonti, owner and CEO of Bios Line, an Italian company that manufactures the BioKap Nutricolor Delicato (www.biokapusa.com) brand of at-home hair dyes. One of the more troublesome chemicals commonly found in hair dyes is paraphenylenediamin (PPD), which can cause skin to become swollen, red, blistered, dry and cracked. “Many consumers have become aware
of the hazards of PPD and they prefer to avoid it,” Tramonti says. “That’s why we have created a PPD-free line, the BioKap Nutricolor Delicato line, that contains 18 colors and 1 lightening cream, all PPDfree and fragrance-free.” Katelyn Giffen, a professional hairstylist and blogger at Rynsroost.com, says there’s a big divide when it comes to how concerned people are about natural ingredients. “Some people are conscious of what they put inside and on their body and others couldn’t care less,” she says. “But the number of people interested in natural beauty products is growing, and I am getting more and more clients who wonder if they could buy something with more natural ingredients.” But even the BioKap brand from Tramonti’s company, with 90 percent natural ingredients, can’t eliminate all chemicals and still achieve the permanent hair color that its customers are after. In addition to not using PPD, though, BioKap does avoid ammonia, paraben and resorcin, which many dyes contain, Tramonti says.

So where does this leave environmentally minded consumers determined to change their hair color? A few factors to consider include: • Consider going natural for real. True natural dyes are henna-based and, as previously mentioned, only work as temporary dyes. Henna is a powdered form of the leaves that come from the henna plant. You can also research do-it-yourself hair dying using herbs or other ingredients. In almost all cases with true natural dyes, though, getting the exact color you’re after will be difficult. • Check the ingredients. No boxed dye you buy online or at the local drug store, super market or retail store will be entirely chemical free. But you can check the list of ingredients to make sure some of the more worrisome chemicals, such as PPD and ammonia, aren’t present. • Consider the environmental big picture. What’s the brand’s overall eco-friendly record? There are many ways to be an environmentally aware consumer and one of those is to seek to do business with companies that try to reduce their negative impact on the
natural world. “Many companies are making an effort to lessen their impact on the environment as much as possible,” Tramonti says. “I know that’s important to us. And we’ve been a strong proponent testing that doesn’t involve the use of animals.”

Thanks to massive public awareness campaigns, nearly everyone understands the significance behind a pink ribbon, but how many can say they have breast cancer knowledge beyond pink? The truth is, breast cancer is extremely complex and not a one-size-fits-all disease. It’s classified into different types based on the unique biology of each tumor, including the size, whether and where it’s spread, how it looks under the microscope and what’s causing it to grow at the cellular level, according to the American Cancer Society. Understanding the various biological features is critical, as they help
determine treatment decisions and directly affect patient outcomes. As breast cancer survivor Pamela Cunningham knows all too well, knowledge is power when navigating a breast cancer journey. When diagnosed with Stage II HER2positive early breast cancer, an aggressive type of the disease, Cunningham said that while she understood there were different stages, she was shocked to discover there were so many different types. In fact, her mother had faced breast cancer several years earlier and neither Cunningham nor her father knew what kind her mother had. To better understand her diagnosis, she talked with friends who had faced similar situations and even sought a second opinion. After learning more, Cunningham felt confident in her decision to receive a treatment regimen that helped shrink her tumor prior to undergoing surgery to remove it. “I’m really thankful I went the way I did,” Cunningham said. “I would advise other
women to do their own research, find out the available treatments and don’t be afraid to ask your doctor about all of your options and possible side effects.” Cunningham and her Oncologist, Dr. Karen Tedesco of New York Oncology Hematology, offer the following tips to help patients more fully understand how to approach a breast cancer diagnosis. Strength in Numbers The news of a cancer diagnosis can be incredibly overwhelming to patients and their loved ones. Make the most of the first few doctor appointments by bringing a friend outside of the immediate family to ensure the information is being absorbed and the right questions are being asked. Build a Support Team In addition to family and friends, it’s important to have a strong health care and surrounding support team. Seek out nurse navigators, local breast support groups and financial assistance to ensure
you’re properly informed and have all the resources you need. Do not hesitate to consider a second opinion until you feel 100 percent confident in your health care team and treatment plan. Understand Your Diagnosis Learning about your specific type of breast cancer is essential because the unique biology of your tumor can directly impact your breast cancer journey. Knowing the four S’s stage, size, status and subtype - of your tumor can help you better understand your diagnosis and the treatment options available to you. Ask Questions, Then Ask More Consider asking your doctor the following questions: Are you eligible for clinical trials? Are there special treatments geared toward your specific type of breast cancer? Do I need surgery? Does surgery have to be the first step? Being actively involved can help ensure each patient receives the best treatment option for them.

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.
“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-
cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”
