What Are Mini Dental Implants? The (Mini Dental Implant (MDI) System consists of a miniature titanium implant that acts like the root of your tooth and a retaining fixture that is incorporated into the base of your denture, The head of the implant is shaped like a ball and the retaining fixture acts like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring. The O-ring snaps over the ball when the denture is seated and holds the denture at a predetermined level of force. When seated, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue. The implant fixtures allow for micromobility while withstanding natural lifting forces. Is the Mini Dental Implant FDA approved? Yes, the product is safe for public use and in fact had beneficial attributes, the FDA granted its formal consent to market the Mini Dental Implant device not only as a transitional or temporary dental product, but significantly, as a long-term item. Travel light and don’t let the bed bugs bite this season (BPT) - The remaining warmweather months of the year are perfect for travel. However, travelers who aren’t careful could find their trip leaving them with a few hundred extra - and unwanted - guests. New research from the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky’s biennial Bugs Without Borders survey found that bed bugs are spreading. Compared with numbers from 2013, more surveyed pest professionals reported encountering bed bugs this year across several areas important to travelers, including: train, bus and taxi transportation (up 8 percent); retail stores (up 5 percent); movie theaters (up 6 percent); and outpatient facilities (up 7 percent). For travelers, this means being
vigilant against bed bugs while on the go is more important now than ever. To ensure your vacation is memorable for all the right reasons, NPMA suggests the following tips for avoiding a bed bug infestation: • Look before you sleep. Professionals agree that visual inspections are still the best way to spot a bed-bug infestation. Set any belongings on a luggage rack upon entry in to a hotel room, and then use a flash light to thoroughly inspect your bed. Pull back the headboard to check behind it for bed bugs, and then pull back the sheets to look for blood spots. Don’t forget to check all corners of the mattress and box spring, as well as inside and beneath the night-
stand drawers and the crevices of any upholstered furniture. It is also wise to inspect the sheets again in the morning for blood spots as bed bugs tend to defecate shortly after feeding. • Change rooms wisely. If you find bed bugs in your hotel room and need to change rooms, be sure that you are not moved in to a room that is adjacent to or directly above or below the suspected infestation. Bed bugs can easily hitchhike on housekeeping carts, luggage and even through sockets in the wall. If an infestation is spreading, it will move first to the rooms closest to the origin. • Clean up. After returning home from your trip, inspect suitcases before bringing them in to the house and vacuum luggage thoroughly before moving it in to storage. For additional
protection, use a garment hand steamer to steam your luggage, killing any bed bugs or eggs that may have hitched a ride home. Next, wash all of the clothes you brought on vacation-even those that have not been worn-in the hottest water the fabric can withstand to prevent any stray bed bugs from making their way in to your drawers or closet. • Seek professional help. If you find that your trip has left you stuck with a bed bug infes-
tation, immediately seek the assistance of a pest professional. While he has worn glasses much of his adult life (near-sighted), Dr. Melvin Whitfield has never had any problems with his eyes. He couldn’t afford to. A Neuro Surgeon, who grew up in the small Indiana city of Sullivan, having problems with his eyes would be a disaster and career threatening, at best. Having been immersed in such a thriving and exciting profession over the past 30 plus years, Dr. Whitfield has remained in top condition - which his long hours have often dictated. Living in Fort Lauderdale, but working in Aventura may have changed Dr. Whitfield’s life forever. When he began to have problems with his eyes earlier this year, it brought on concern. After seeing his Optometrist Rebecca Krieger, he found out why his eyesight was changing. “In any profession, your eyes are a huge concern, obviously,” Dr. Whitfield said. “What I do for a living depends on having perfect vision. The news was met with plenty of questions that I wanted to find answers to.” With Dr. Krieger finding cataracts in both eyes, the type of surgery needed to keep this 68-year-old going strong - and doing what he was trained to do - was as close as the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach. The best thing about the entire process is my eyesight is better than ever, and I am still working around the clock with no glasses needed.” While many have different recovery periods, Dr. Whitfield admits that having the surgery done at the end of the week gives you the weekend to fully recover. He has had no issues in the past four months since the last surgery was performed. WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. Risks Of Hiring An Aide Privately By Terry Adler, RN Always Classic Care
Well, it happened again. The family of a former patient of our agency called with a horror story of how the patient was taken advantage of by an aide that the client hired privately. Mrs. R. had been our patient throughout the three years that her long term care insurance paid for aide services, and she was very happy with the aides we had assigned to her. However, once she was faced with paying for the aide out-of-pocket, her friends convinced her that she could pay less money for help that she could hire herself, rather than work through an agency. At first, Mrs. R was very happy. The aide she hired was kind and attentive. She helped shower and dress Mrs R, helping pick out her clothes, accessories, even her jewelry. The aide liked to listen to Mrs. R’s stories about her trips and the lovely momentos she bought back. Mrs. R also
liked to talk about her designer clothes and how much she spent on her wardrobe. The aide drove Mrs R around in her late husband’s Lexus, taking her shopping, to her doctors, and to the beauty salon. And when they returned home and Mrs. R reclined in her lounge chair for a little nap, the aide prepared dinner and straightened up the house. Mrs. R told her daughter that she was very happy with this aide. Then, all of a sudden, small items began to disappear. At first, it was costume jewelry and some twenty dollar bills that Mrs R kept for house cash. Then, it was a diamond ring that Mrs R did not to wear regularly and had put away in a secret place for safe keeping. That upset Mrs. R. She became suspicious. She questioned the aide several times, even saying that if the aide needed money, she should just ask her. The aide became
defensive, even sharp and nasty. That’s when Mrs. R called her daughter. The daughter flew down, helped her mom look for everything and questioned the aide. The aide said she was insulted, and quit. The family could not accuse her without proof, but felt that was a lesson well learned. That’s when the daughter called us. How many times have you looked in the mirror and danced, sang a song or just pictured yourself on stage and entertaining a crowd? Well, you don’t have to dream about it anymore. If you happen to be a resident of Aventura and have talent, there is something happening during the month of October that will bring out the Frank Sinatra or Katie Perry in you. The City’s annual Aventura STAR talent competition will hold open auditions at the Community Recreation Center (3375 NE 188 Street) throughout the month. Lily Espinoza-Young grew up as a gymnast. She attended many competitive events when she was younger, and while this mother of three boys is 39 now, she keeps in good enough shape to send in her application for the STAR competition. “I can dance and have always had the advantage of being able to do more with my gymnastics background,” EspinosaYoung smiled. “I have been really getting myself back in shape - doing cardio and spending the free time that I have working out.” As Espinosa-Young works hard each day in hopes of being able to become a contestant, there are so many others, living in the community that have talent as a magician, acrobat, dancer, actor, musi-
cian or singer. Because the event is open to all ages, high school students such as Mike Mahler and his dancing partner, Daniella Petrocelli, have been practicing for so many competitions, having one in their own backyard is news that both were very optimistic about. “Daniella and I have been doing this for three years,” said Mahler, 17. “We go to different competitions as far as dance all the time, but this is a talent show and there will be more than dancers there.” The event is open to groups of up to five - which is sure to attract plenty of talent from this gifted community. PART OF FOUNDERS DAY To ensure that there will be plenty of exposure, the Aventura STAR finals will be held on Sunday, November 8th at the 20th Annual Founders Day celebration. “Having this along with such a prestigious yearly happening like Founders Day will attract the people,” Espinosa-Young said. “The great thing about it, is that many of the residents will know someone who is competing. My neighbors found out that I was going to try this, and now they want to know every detail.” The competition is open to Aventura residents only. An Aventura STAR application is required for each contestant including each member of a group entry.
Auditions are scheduled on the following dates and times: • Sunday October 11, 2015 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM • Wednesday October 14, 2015 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM • Saturday October 17, 2015 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM THERE ARE THINGS TO KNOW When registering to participate in the Aventura Star Competition, a City of Aventura Waiver Form must be completed. If you are over 18 years of age, you must sign a City of Aventura Adult Waiver Form. If you are under the age of 18, your parent or legal guardian must sign the City of Aventura Minor Waiver Form. As a minor, your parent or legal guardian must be present at the time of the audition. Keeping things in the community, all participants will receive a certificate of participation. First place winners will receive a $75 Gift Certificate to the Aventura Mall. Second Place Winners will receive a $35 Gift Certificate to the Aventura Mall. Aventura Star is open to individual and group performances of up to 5 participants at any level. Groups that participate
will be placed in the appropriate age category according to the oldest member. All of the group members must complete an application; have a City of Aventura Waiver signed and as well as be Aventura residents. Aventura Star is based on an overall performance. Participants are only allowed to perform in one act and not both individual and group. Contestants will be judged on quality of performance by Stage Presence, Talent and Audience Response. All decisions made by judges are final, will be free and open to the public. PERFORMANCE GUIDELINE A sound technician is available, however participants must provide CDs (with backup on hand), marked with name, track number and any stage directions. Performances are limited to 3 minutes. The finals will be live and lip-syncing is not permitted. Finalists will be contacted by phone no later than October 23, 2015 and music for the final performance is due no later than October 26, 2015. Persons with disabilities requiring accommodations in order to participate must contact the Community Services Department at least 48 hours in advance.

At the same time, Halloween generates significant worry in parents and with sound reason. Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for young pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than twice as many children are killed in pedestrian/vehicle incidents on Halloween between 4-10 p.m. compared to the same hours on the other days of the year. Why are Halloween pedestrian fatalities so high? For more than 70 percent of kids who trick-or-treat door to door, it’s due to a dangerous combination of reduced daylight, preoccupied and unaccompanied kids in the streets, and bulky costumes that often make it difficult for oncoming drivers to see them. More than 36 million Americans live with migraines, and up to a third or more (approximately 12 million) of them are not receiving optimal treatment. Medications may cause side-effects, do not always work or work only partially for some patients, react badly with other medications, can be expensive or not covered by insurance. For any or all of these reasons, there remains a significant unmet need in the world of migraine relief - famine for some amid plenty. Pharmaceutical companies are working on medicines that rely on capsaicin pathways to prevent migraines, Bloomberg News reports. A non-prescription, homeopathic remedy, Ausanil, is already commercially available. Formulated using the raw extract of the chili pepper, capsicum annuum, the remedy is used to rapidly relieve migraines and severe headaches such as cluster headaches and tension headaches. Because it acts locally in the nose, Ausanil doesn’t interact with other medications and does not cause stomach or liver issues that are associated with commonly used OTC pain relievers. “When you see a patient time and time again and nothing seems to give them relief, or they’re limited on treatments due to drug-drug interactions or notable side effects,
it can be a very frustrating and heartbreaking process,” says Dr. Maria Alexianu, of the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. “It’s vital to offer new options to patients who are still searching for pain relief and are continuously incapacitated in their daily life.” Weight control: Obesity is also a worldwide issue, making effective weight-control remedies a priority for health advocates around the world. Science Daily reports that University of Wyoming researchers are investigating capsaicin as a weight-control supplement. Researchers believe the chili pepper constituent may help boost metabolism by inhibiting cells that store fat and encouraging the type of cells that turn fat into energy. Cancer treatment: Multiple studies aim at exploring the effect of capsaicin on cancer cells. One notable investigation from Marshall University found evidence that the compound inhibited the growth of lung cancer tumors through an animal-based study, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. In another study, researchers at Nottingham University in the United Kingdom also found that capsaicin killed cancer cells without harming healthy cells in cultures of human lung and pancreatic cancer cells.
Fighting diabetes: About 30 million Americans live with diabetes, and the disease is the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the American Diabetes Association. While multiple medicines are available to treat diabetes, many people still find it difficult to control the disease. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating chili peppers as part of a regular, healthy diet, could help control diabetes. Natural nutrition: Chili peppers also deliver health benefits beyond medicinal ones. The peppers are highly nutritious, delivering a punch of nutrients that are also associated with better health, including vitamins A, C and B-6, iron, copper and potassium. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.
“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-
cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Salt and life expectancy: It is well documented that the Japanese and the Swiss enjoy some of the longest life expectancy rates of anyone in the world. It is less known however, that they also have among the highest rates of salt consumption. A review of peer-reviewed medical research around the world indicates that if people were to actually consume the low levels of salt recommended in the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, they would put their health at risk. Fortunately, most Americans - including the elderly - when left to their own choice, consume salt within the healthy range.
