4 reasons why you should fill your shopping cart with store brands

store brands tasted as good as, and in some cases better than, national brands, Time magazine and Money Manifesto both reported.

(BPT) - Price isn’t the only reason 97 percent of millennials say they buy store brands. Shoppers age 18-36 say store brand products are also more innovative than brand name ones, deliver better value and are higher quality than ever, according to a report by Mintel. What’s more, millennials aren’t the only group driving the growing demand for store brands. Private label brands now account for nearly 18 percent of all sales - $115.3 billion, according to the Private Label Manufacturer’s Association. In supermarkets, store brands make up 23 percent of all products sold and more than 17 percent of all products sold in drug stores, the PLMA says.

Choice and convenience Today’s store brands are available in virtually every product category. From prepared foods and dry goods, to fresh and deli meats, dairy and eggs, as well as health and beauty items and even baby formula, it’s possible to find alternative options for many popular name-brand products. What’s more, nearly every major department, grocery and pharmacy chain now has its own store brand, meaning you can find innovative and valueoriented alternatives no matter where you prefer to shop.

Performance and innovation Early store brands had a

reputation for mimicking the winning qualities of national brands, but many of today’s private labels are leading the way. In today’s market, it’s not unusual to find store brands launching their own innovations and bringing a new standard of performance to both national and competitive private label brands. For example, some store brand incontinence and feminine care products now incorporate Dri-Fit innovations the same absorbency technology found in the Prevail national brand of adult incontinence products. With a unique blend of natural and synthetic fibers, Dri-Fit innovations provide the comfort of cotton and the protection of synthetics in protective underwear, bladder control pads/liners, ultrathin maxi pads,

thick maxi pads and panty liners. Independent lab testing found that products incorporating Dri-Fit innovations lock in 20 percent more wetness than other leading bladder control brands, based on retention capacity. To learn more, visit MadewithDriFit.com. Quality and value Innovation by store brands could explain why, globally, 71 percent of store brand buyers say the quality of private label brands has improved, according to one Nielsen study. And while this study also found that a quarter of American shoppers describe store brands as an extremely good value, it’s clear that cost is no longer the only benefit of private label products. For food items in particular, one major consumer study found most taste-testers felt

Same sources and standards Food and beverage and consumer products are regulated in the U.S., and store brands are held to the same regulatory standards of quality,

safety and source as national brands. What’s more, some store brands not only offer the same quality as national brands, they come from the same place. Store brands may come from national brand manufacturers who use their excess plant capacity to produce and supply store brands to retail chains. Others are made by specialized producers that concentrate their business on providing products for store brands. Still others, such as retailers and wholesalers, may own their own manufacturing facilities that supply product exclusively to their stores. In a report on private labels, Nielsen noted that “Long gone are the days of no-frills packaging intended only for those on a tight budget - private label, also known as store brands, are no longer viewed simply as low-cost alternatives to name brands; they’re increasingly high-quality products that fulfill consumer needs across a variety of price points.”

(BPT) - Time to reflect back on 2016 and set your sights on 2017. How did the year progress, and what did you accomplish? Maybe your goals included: A new promotion, a new car, a bigger house, better health or more meaningful relationships. Did they happen?

Has that time come to raise the bar and make a fundamental change? At first glance it may seem impossible, but nothing changes unless you take control. Maybe 2017 is the year you start living life more on your own terms - and start today by employing these five tips: • Live a life that is true to you. Wrestle with this one. Dig deep. Is it work? Then make passion for that work front and center. Is it skill building? Then tackle an online class in a skill you need, or just want to explore. Is it where you live, or who you are sharing life with or want to share it with? Stare it down and chart one bold step toward change. The biggest regret at the end of life’s journey is abandoning your dreams. And for most people it’s just pure fear that they weren’t good enough, so they “turtle shell” up. Stop. No retakes. One mantra: Live Life Now. Repeat: This is Your Life. Find what is true to you and take one tangible step. • Measure your time and where it is spent. Time is like the sand in the hourglass of life. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Manage it like money. Every person walking this planet has the same exact number of hours in a day. Think of it as currency. How are you spending it? Seriously, take out the pen, paper and write down for one week how that most precious commodity was spent. Then change the allocation and budget time toward accomplishing

that change you want, and maybe even desperately need. Own your hour glass of life and take control. • Focus on your people. Ask yourself a tough question: Who are the people you care about most? Who do you impact, and who impacts you? These are the people that matter most in your life. Don’t be afraid to shift the balance of your time in their favor. You’ll be a better friend, and you’ll inherently feel stronger and more impactful. Your support network grows stronger, as do you. • Feel good with what you wear. This may seem contrite, but what you toss on that skin of yours not only speaks volumes about you, but also puts you into a certain mindset. If clothes make the man, what do yours say about you? Change some items in your wardrobe and feel good about what you wear. For example, the Madda Fella menswear clothing line projects the chill vibe of Key West, yet works well in the boardroom or out on the boat. • Find your inspiration point. What place inspires you? Where is that one spot in the world that motivates you above all others? For Madda Fella CEO and founder Michael Louden, it is Key West. “When I am there, in the sun, in this gorgeous slice of the world, I change perspectives... see a bigger world.” he says. “You owe it to yourself to do something meaningful with your life, to make a difference.” Find your place. You’ll find it is just what you need to recharge your batteries, revive your spirit and strengthen you. The holidays are a wonderful time to bring into focus the year ahead. Don’t be afraid to think big and to start now. Set the ground work for change today and you’ll make 2017 your most legendary year yet.

CITY NEWS the financial gap until they are eligible for their maximum benefit at age 70. Both experts outlined strategies that incorporate housing wealth early on in retirement instead of using home equity as a last resort option, which has been the conventional wisdom until recently. This can be achieved by either selling the home and downsizing or, if you plan on staying in your current home for many years, using a reverse mortgage to convert part of the home’s value into a liquid asset. “Setting up a reverse mortgage with a term payout that lasts eight years is one idea to consider in this scenario,” Krishnaswamy wrote in an article posted to Forbes.com on Oct. 12. He explained how the loan proceeds can help bridge a homeowner’s finances by replacing all or a portion of the income Social Security would have provided during the interim. A reverse mortgage can also make sense for affluent retirees in high tax brackets seeking to maximize their Social Security benefit. Davison, a wealth manager and researcher in Columbus, Ohio, wrote a 2014 case study, “Delay Social Security: Funding the Income Gap with a Reverse Mortgage” that showed how using a reverse mortgage line of credit to bridge the gap can dramatically improve a retirement financial plan. Instead of spending down an IRA or other investments where withdrawals are taxed, withdrawals from the line of credit, which are not taxable income, can be used to pay expenses. This allows the investment portfolio to grow until the first required minimum distri-

A surprising strategy for getting the most out of your Social Security (BPT) - The temptation to start collecting monthly Social Security checks at age 62 is hard to resist, but claiming the benefit too early can have damaging consequences for your overall retirement funds. According to Kiplinger.com’s October list of “Financial Decisions You Will Regret in Retirement,” taking the money as soon as you are eligible at 62 is actually considered one of the worst mistakes you can make in your lifetime by many advisors. That’s because the longer you wait to claim benefits, the more money you are eligible to receive in your monthly check. The Social Security Administration says the increases from delaying your benefit can be large and explains that a worker would receive $750 a month if she starts her benefit at age 62, but $1,000 a month at her full retirement age of 66. Or, if she delays until age 70, she would receive $1,320 a month. There are obvious advantages to waiting until age 70 to claim Social Security, but for individuals who can’t or don’t want to continue working that long, it might not be so easy to defer the monthly cash benefit. Certified financial planners Neil Krishnaswamy and Tom Davison say older adults do have options for filling

bution at age 70, the same year the retiree can claim the maximum Social Security benefit. Davison emphasized the long-term benefits of the reverse mortgage line of credit if the borrower is able to put money towards voluntarily repaying it over time. The reverse mortgage line of credit will grow at a reliable rate and can be used to support spending later in life when fewer borrowing options are available. A reverse mortgage is a loan that enables homeowners that are generally 62 or older to use part of their homes’ equity to obtain cash proceeds that can be used in many ways, without giving up ownership of the house. Borrowers may choose to draw their funds as a lump sum, as a monthly term or tenure payment, or they may choose to create a line of credit that can be drawn upon on an as-needed basis; borrowers may also choose a combination of a monthly payment and a line of credit. The loan does not have to be repaid until the last surviving borrower or remaining eligible non-borrowing spouse passes away or permanently leaves the home, or fails to meet loan obligations that include paying property taxes and insurance, and keeping the home maintained. There is no penalty for repaying all or some of the loan early, and as Davison stresses, repaying the line of credit when expenses are low will enable it to grow and make funds available later on when you need it. To learn more about reverse mortgage loans and how using home equity can fit into an overall financial plan, visit www.reversemortgage.org/equity, a consumer education website hosted by the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association.

No more glasses after 50 years!

NOVEMBER 2016 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

Helen Dopp has always been someone who has faced things head on; so when she was told that she had cataracts in both eyes, there was never a hesitation. Unlike many of us who suffer from problems with our eyes from our youth, this Dallas, Tx. area resident started to wear glasses in her 20s - instead of having to battle those awkward years in grade school and high school. But things would soon catch up. As a mother who worked much of her adult life, this is a 74-year-old who has never slowed down. She still works, remains active socially and is indeed someone who has made the most of her time on this earth. Because she loves doing and hanging out with friends back in Texas, the time had come this past year to start looking for someone to get her back to seeing the way she had in the past. “I remember nobody would drive with me anymore,” Dopp laughed. “Really, the fact that my eyesight was getting worse, I was not seeing the best. That was a concern.” Because she can joke about it now, it’s really who Helen Dopp is. She is a humorous individual who loves life and can joke about the little things. But when it came to her eyesight, a trip to Florida to visit her daughter, may have been planned all along. While visiting her daughter in Fort Lauderdale, the name Dr. Stanley Braverman came up in conversation. It was just a coincidence, but one that has impacted her life. “We had been talking about me having cataracts, and my daughter’s friend from church immediately said that there was nobody better than Dr. Braverman,” Dopp recalled. “Being from Texas, my optometrist had some people back home in mind, but when we started to look at Dr. Braverman, and how many had talked about his work and their experience, I got excited.” After a consultation, it was evident that both of Dopp’s eyes needed to be worked on, and she was more than fine with it. She also was bowled over by the experience at the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach. “I am the kind of person that tries to look at things in a positive way,” Dopp said. “The very fact that if I wanted to live the quality life that I have always planned to do, my eyesight needed to be better than it was.” From the moment Dopp met Dr. Braverman and his staff, it was an expe-

case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

Patient Helen Dopp, left and Dr. Stanley Braverman after her procedure this summer in Hallandale Beach. rience that she felt was meant to be. Coming to Florida to visit her daughter turned out to be something much more. Something that enhanced her life - in a major way. During her stay in south Florida, Dopp took care of both eyes within a few weeks - and after her second procedure was done, and the day or two it took to recover - things changed. “It was crazy,” Dopp said, emphatically. “I could tell immediately after the two procedures were finished. It was one of those things that is hard to explain. I just know that if anyone has cataracts and you cannot see your best, putting off is delaying living your life to its fullest.” For the first time in over 50 years, Dopp does not have to wear glasses or contacts! “I still find myself reaching across the table to put on my glasses, but they are not there,” she said. “The entire experience with Dr. Braverman and his staff was tremendous, and even though I live in Texas, my daughter will always push his name out to her friends. I am so glad that she refused to let me go anywhere else!” What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing

light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the

Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring. Always Classic Care has offices in three counties and is prepared to meet all your care needs. Feel free to check them out at www.AlwaysClassicCare.com, or call for more detailed information at 305-403-2622. Lic Dade 302-11301 • Lic Broward 302-11508

(BPT) - Your Facebook profile is a representation of you on the Web. It’s where you connect with friends, learn the latest news and find the best reviews of the restaurants and products you enjoy every day. You use your Facebook profile all the time, so you want to make sure the information you display on Facebook remains as safe and secure as possible. Facebook works 24/7 to protect people’s accounts, but there are also simple things you can do to take more control of your security. Here are three easy options:

1. Take a security checkup. Security Checkup is the quickest and easiest way to add extra layers of protection to your Facebook account. With three simple steps you can: • Control where you’re logged in. This makes it easy to log out of devices you haven’t used in a while or may have forgotten about, meaning you’ll only be logged into Facebook on devices and browsers you approve. • Turn on Login Alerts. When this feature is activated, you’ll receive a notification or email alert whenever someone tries to log into your account from a new device or browser. • Review your password security. Only use strong and unique passwords. You should never use your Facebook password anywhere else online and never share it with anyone. You can start your Security Checkup any time by searching for “security checkup” in the Facebook Help Center, or by typing facebook.com/securitycheckup into your browser. 2. Turn on login approvals. If you’re only going to make one change to improve the security of your account, this is it. Otherwise known as two-factor authentication (2FA), login approvals provide an extra security step whenever you log in from a new device. You will get a special code on your phone that you use along with your password to complete the login process. To turn on login approvals, all you have to do is go to “Settings” in the Facebook app on your phone or in your browser. Once you’ve done this, select “Security Settings” and check the box next to “Login Approvals.” If you don’t have login approvals turned on already, you should do it as soon as possible.

3. Use your Facebook login with third-party apps. Your Facebook login allows you to quickly and safely log into many thirdparty apps using your Facebook account. Maintaining a login system is hard, and by using your Facebook account, you don’t need to trust your login to every app you sign into. They never get to see your Facebook password. As an added bonus, using Facebook Login means you don’t need to create and remember lots of new passwords. You can also control what information you share with these apps by clicking “Edit the Info You Provide.” And best of all, you choose whether to let the app post on your behalf. To sign into an app with Facebook,

simply click on the Facebook button on the app’s sign-in page. Improve your Facebook security today In addition to the steps above, you can also visit the Facebook Safety Center, which provides additional tools to help control your experience on Facebook, as well as numerous tips and resources for safe and secure sharing. It also gives you access to the Bullying Prevention Hub, a resource for teens, parents and educators seeking guidance on how to prevent and address bullying on the Internet. Your home comes with locks on the doors. Your car comes with an alarm. Your cell phone comes with a passcode. Yet every day you take additional steps to protect these possessions and the valuable information they hold. Why not do the same for your Facebook account? With just a few simple clicks, you can give your account a tune-up and more safely connect and share on Facebook with the people you care about.

Are Your Kids Up To The Challenge? By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest

NOVEMBER 2016 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 16

When Karen and Owen Milstein moved to Aventura in the summer of 2014, they vowed to make sure that even though their work schedule was hectic, they would always have something for their kids to do. Because they both work in downtown Miami, the schedule is not always convenient for their 13 and 14-year—old boys, who are at the age where they need to have stimulation - mentally and physically. As the holidays are fast approaching and the kids will once again be out of school, the Milstein family came up with a plan this year - where taking advantage of the many programs that the Aventura area has to offer - will be part of their plan to keep the kids active. “We drive around a lot, being new to the community, so we see a lot of things that grab our interest,” Karen Milstein explained. “From soccer to martial arts and gymnastics, we have explored it all right here in our backyard.” Keeping children active is truly impor-

tant. With so many electronic choices/distractions, any youngsters could easily get caught up in the wrong thing and become that couch potato that we all dread. “The important part of any activity for kids is to make sure that they want to do it and enjoy what they are doing,” said Maria LaRose, who lives in Sunny Isles Beach and has continued to keep her two boys and a girl, busy for years. “My kids get bored easily, so whatever we choose to do, it has to have some interest, or we go back to the drawing board.” LaRose admits that she and her husband are always thinking ahead, not wanting their children to have an excuse not stay active. Like so many families in our communities, staying local and having a routine is always positive. Here are a few ideas that may keep your family on the move: Smart Kids Miami Offers 16 unique programs with a positive, active, and challenging learning environment. Their students are always

placed in small classes of less than 12 children, with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio. LIFESTYLES

How To Watch The Market In Uncertain Election Times With the presidential election dominating the news cycles, many investors may be keeping an eye on the stock market as well as the voting booth as they wonder what impact the election of Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump could have on their portfolios. “Presidential elections are almost always a big part of the greater theme of markets, but in this case even more so,” says Benjamin Lupu, a Certified Financial Planner and founder of Kensington AMI (www.KensingtonAMI .com), an asset-management firm. Lupu says it’s important to understand that how voters weigh their Election Day choices and how the market views the candidates aren’t nec-

essarily the same thing. As hard as it might be, he says, investors should lay aside any personal political leanings as they assess what factors might keep the market humming and what factors might upset the market – and affect their investments in the process. “From an investment standpoint, this isn’t about being for one candidate or the other,” Lupu says. “It’s a matter of trying to gauge what the markets might do depending on different scenarios, and trying to plan and respond accordingly.” He says factors to consider include: • The Clinton impact. What ever opinion people may have of Clinton, she

represents status quo, continuity and predictability, which markets prefer, Lupu says. Markets in general have been buoyant in recent months as a decisive win for Clinton had been the consensus expectation and has been priced into the markets. Those expectations could change quickly, though, and investors would need to consider adjustments if they do. “Harsh reality may have something to say about this before the process is over, and any reversal in the polls can greatly upset markets,” he says. • The Trump impact. Trump is extremely popular with his populist base in the U.S., and some people would consider a Trump victory good for business. The wild card,

though, is that he’s immensely unpopular in much of the rest of the world, Lupu says. If the race is seen as close, or if Trump is considered to have a strong chance of winning, global markets could react negatively, at least initially. If the odds of a Trump win appear to be improving, it might be a good idea for investors to reduce exposure, stay partially in cash and see what transpires, Lupu says.

• A general approach. Financial security in the U.S. has traditionally come from three things: sound, long-term process; clear, unemotional thinking; and American optimism, Lupu says. “I like to say keep it clean, be disciplined and have faith in the future,” he says. In this case, that means be aware of market expectations, follow what happens, but stay focused and make prudent decisions based on facts and

not emotions – or personal political preferences. In any other presidential election year, Lupu says, he wouldn’t advocate keeping such a close watch on who’s ahead in the polls and the implications behind the poll numbers. But Clinton vs. Trump is far from the typical race. “I admit this is not the usual playbook for election years,” Lupu says. “But then, this election is not the usual affair.”

llama circunstancias excepcionales o cambiantes.

(BPT) - Most people associate bone density and skeletal concerns with advanced age. However, healthy bones form during childhood with the majority of bone density established before kids reach their 20s. Is it time to shift the focus to the early years rather than the later? Up to 90 percent of peak bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and age 20 in boys, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. What’s more, bone mass peaks by the late 20s for most people, which means at this point bones have reached their maximum strength and density. Bone is a living tissue and childhood is a critical

time to focus on bone health and establish good habits that support skeletal wellness throughout life. Some factors effecting bone mass cannot be controlled, such as gender, race and hormones. Nutrition, on the other hand, can be controlled and is one of the best ways to increase your child’s bone health while teaching them positive eating habits.

Nutrition ideas to boost bone health Studies show an increase in childhood bone fractures over the past four decades. Experts agree adequate levels of vitamin D and calcium decrease the risk of developing fractures by supporting bone strength. Milk is an obvious source of vitamin D and calcium, but for kids with lactose sensitivities or those who don’t like drinking milk, there are other options. In fact, there are many foods that are a good source of both vitamin D and calcium. Eggs: Eggland’s Best

eggs come from hens fed an all-vegetarian diet consisting of healthy grains, canola oil and supplements like alfalfa and vitamin E. As a result, each EB egg has five times more vitamin D, plus three times more vitamin B12, two times more omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E and 38 percent more lutein compared to ordinary eggs. Kale: Just one cup of kale has 10 percent of your daily calcium and 133 percent of both your vitamin A and vitamin C needs for the day. If you struggle to get your kids to eat veggies, simply blend kale in a fruit smoothie, make kale chips by baking with garlic and olive oil, or mix cooked kale into spaghetti sauce or an egg frittata mixture to make it a seamless addition. Figs: Five medium fresh figs have around 90 milligrams of calcium and other bone-healthy nutrients like potassium and magnesium, according to WebMD. Dried figs are a good option also, plus are a great natural sweetener for bakery items like cookies. A half cup of dried figs have 120 milligrams of cal-

cium. Almond butter: Want a bone-boosting alternative to peanut butter for your little one’s toast and PB&Js? Try almond butter! In addition to being a good source of protein, two tablespoons contains an estimated 112 milligrams of calcium and 240 milligrams of potassium. Tofu: Soft enough that even tots can safely eat it, tofu is considered by some to be a modern superfood. Packed with nutrients, calcium-enriched tofu contains more than 400 milligrams of calcium. Cut into small pieces, saute and add to your kids’ favorite dishes such as macaroni and cheese or scrambled eggs. “Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient when it comes to good bone health, but it’s also difficult to get the necessary amount through food,” said Tammy Lakatos, a registered dietitian. “That’s why we love Eggland’s Best eggs - they have five times more Vitamin D than ordinary eggs, plus, they’re easy to integrate into your diet, whether in omelets, salads, wraps, casseroles or desserts.”

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish. It’s kids’ eye exam season: Tips for children’s vision health (BPT) - By now, kids have settled into their school day routine, teachers know each student’s abilities and potential, and you’re feeling like you have a moment to catch a breath before the holidays arrive. Then, an envelope comes home from school with a troubling surprise: your child is having difficulty seeing the white board in class. The school recommends a full eye exam. “It’s not uncommon for parents to be unaware their child is having vision issues, and children themselves may not realize it either,” says Dr. Mark Jacquot, clinical director for LensCrafters Vision Care. “Kids use their eyes constantly in the classroom and on the playground. Problems often come to light during the first months of the school year, when children either have a vision screening in school or their teacher notices them struggling academically.” Between 15 to 20 percent of pre-school-age kids have a vision problem such as nearsightedness, lazy eye (2 to 5 percent), and 3 to 4 percent have a condition that causes the eyes to turn in or out, according to the Vision Council. However, two out of three kids start school without having had a comprehensive eye exam. Undiagnosed vision problems can also lead to behavioral problems in school and difficulty with class work. Some kids may even have their vision issues misdiagnosed as attention deficit disorders, according to the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. Some signs of vision issues - like a short attention span for close work or difficulty reading - mirror ADD symptoms.

The vision care professionals at LensCrafters recommend parents be alert for common signs of vision problems in children, including: • Pupils of different sizes • Red eyes • Swollen eyelids • Excessive blinking, stumbling or daydreaming • Rubbing eyes • Squinting • Headaches, dizziness, nausea or double vision • Holding reading materials very close to the face To help parents understand, first hand, the vision problems children may be experiencing, a new video is available at www.lenscrafters.com/see-how-your-childsees. “In-school vision screenings generally only test for how well a child sees at various distances, so it’s important for children to have the health of their eyes checked by a doctor through a comprehensive exam each year, even if you haven’t noticed signs of a problem,” Jacquot says. “Eye health can be a valuable indicator of overall health, and a comprehensive eye exam can detect or rule out serious health conditions.” While health insurance typically doesn’t cover adult vision care, the Affordable Care Act requires insurance companies to cover pediatric eye care. If your child hasn’t already had a comprehensive eye exam this school

year, now’s the time to get one. New technology makes eye exams easier, more accurate and more kid-friendly than ever. LensCrafters’ new digital exam, Clarifye, measures five times more optical characteristics of the visual system, on both the inside and outside of the eye, to provide the most detailed picture of eye health. The exam pinpoints the smallest changes that occur in eyes over time, allowing eye care professionals to detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma, diabetes and high blood pressure. Visit www.lenscrafters.com/clarifye to learn more about Clarifye. For more information on children’s eye health and vision care, visit eyeonkidshealth.com.

(BPT) - Intrigued by all the braintraining products out there to keep your mind sharp and spirits young? You may want to consider something else: A hearing test. That’s right. Mounting evidence links untreated hearing loss to impaired memory and diminished cognitive function. What that means is, if you keep brushing off that suspected hearing loss of yours, your cognition may pay. Researchers have found that when people with unaddressed hearing loss strain to hear, they tend to do more poorly on memory tests. They may figure out what is being said, but because so much effort goes into just hearing it, their ability to remember what they heard often suffers. Experts believe this has to do with what they call “cognitive load.” That is, in order to compensate for the hearing loss and make out the words, people with untreated hearing loss may draw on cognitive resources they’d normally use to remember what they’ve heard. Experts say that untreated hearing loss may even interfere with the person’s ability to accurately process and make sense of what was said or heard. In fact, research shows that people with poorer hearing have less gray matter in the auditory cortex, a region of the brain needed to support

speech comprehension. Other research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia. One Johns Hopkins study found that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. Another found that hearing loss is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults. And a third revealed a link between hearing loss and accelerated brain tissue loss. Some experts believe that interventions, like professionally fitted hearing aids, could potentially help. The bottom line is we actually “hear” with our brain, not with our ears. So if you think you may have hearing loss, do something about it. Make an appointment with a hearing health care professional, and get a hearing test. After all, research suggests that treating hearing loss may be one of the best things you can actually do to help protect your memory and cognitive function. The Better Hearing Institute (BHI) offers a free, confidential online hearing check where people can determine if they need a more comprehensive hearing test by a hearing health care professional.
