Gloria Ackerman has battled poor eyesight all of her life. Damaged at an early age because of measles, she was relegated to 61 years of adjusting and making sacrifices. Ackerman, a Pembroke Pines resident, was not alone in her battle to see clearly. Her mother and grandmother both had vision altering cataracts. So does her younger sister. It was a matter of time before the damage completely started taking over her life. “I remember telling my sister that since we loved reading so much, and it was just a matter of time before things really went downhill, we needed to start to collect audio books,” Ackerman recalled. “While that was a wakeup, it also was going to be a reality.” Through the years, the options to have any kind of laser vision surgery to correct her eyesight was out of the question. Not enough research had been done to make her feel comfortable about getting it done. With her left eye failing, her Optometrist Stephen Heiden of Hollywood said that something had to be done. If she was going to have any kind of life, cataract surgery was a must. Because she had been a patient of the Dr’s Heiden for years, she listened. It had gotten to the point where she couldn’t see well with glasses or contact lenses and she was frustrated. “My eyes had gotten to 20/600 and 20/ 800,” Ackerman said. “If I wanted to see again, I had to make a decision.” That decision was made after doing research on the two names that were given to her. Even though she was apprehensive, Ackerman also realized that these surgeries were becoming more and more common, and that many advances had been made over the last 10 year period. Her decision to visit Dr. Stanley Braverman and the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach was based on all the success stories and word of mouth that proclaimed this to be the “best around”. It was a decision that completely changed Ackerman’s life. “From the first visit and meeting, I could not have been more comfortable with the decision,” Ackerman recalled. “I came away from that initial visit thinking I really hit the eyesight lottery.” At the age of 67, nearsighted all of her life, Ackerman’s cataract surgery in April
and May of this year with the Tecnis Multifocal lens was a major success. “The surgery was flawless,” she said. “The care and respect offered me by Dr. Braverman and his staff was overwhelming. He is truly a caring person who has a passion for what he does. It was a miracle to me.” Two days after her first surgery, Ackerman was overcome with joy, knowing that as clear as her vision had become (she was a negative 6.25 before surgery, wearing thick glasses, with poor eyesight even with them), it was better and would continue to improve. She is now seeing 20/20 without glasses at both distance and up close! The Tecnis multifocal lenses were a miracle! Because of them, and great surgery by Dr. Braverman, she never has needed glasses since the surgery. “In this day and age of non-personal patient/doctor relationships, Dr. Braverman has exceeded everything I was looking for,” Ackerman pointed out. “Now, my sister is looking forward to having her vision corrected like mine. It’s a great thing. Thank you Dr. Braverman.” Dr. Braverman commented that “ Ms. Ackerman had a very successful result. I was pleased, since she had a very significant amount of myopia, as well as cataracts. When your vision is as bad as Ms. Ackerman’s vision, your surgery may not leave you glasses free 10% of the time. Using my newly trademarked Laser Assisted Cataract Extraction (LACE™ ) surgery, if you are deemed a candidate by me, I can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision; and, no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used.” What Are Cataracts A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dis-
solved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. UNDERSTANDING HOME HEALTH By Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care
Thank you for your great response to this column. These are a few of some recent questions: I’m not able to manage my apartment or drive my car anymore. Will my long term care insurance cover someone to help me? Your long term care insurance covers personal care needed at home only. That means that your policy states that it will cover a home health aide who can help the insured person shower, dress, prepare light meals, do laundry, and straighten up bathroom and kitchen after using them for the care of the patient. The aide can also shop for the insured. Aides are professionals who have been trained with a required amount of state-approved hours in a legitimate training school to provide safe and efficient care with a degree of ethics. They are aware of the services they are allowed to provide under insurance coverage. Services requested other than the aforementioned needs to be agreed upon via a private arrangement between you and your aide. As an agency, we cannot and do not get involved in these arrangements when insurance is involved. But I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I
need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. So, what can I do? Those are considered private services. At Always Classic Care, we can provide them for you at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost, much as you arranged before you qualified for coverage from your long term care insurance. If you explain your needs to me, I can make wonderful recommendations for you. We can provide housecleaners and drivers who provide those services for a living, but are screened as well as our aides prior to our recommending them. Why should I go through an agency if I have to hire someone? I can use someone my neighbor uses. You definitely can hire whomever you like. However, you should consider the following items: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? All of our recommendations have had to be subjected to an FBI investigative screening. • Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? Are you sure? • Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes? We do. Many people are unaware of their responsibility
to IRS when hiring a household employee, or the aide’s legitimate status to work in this country. If you hire privately you are responsible for taxes, checking legal status and overtime pay. They are now your employee and you are legally an employer. REMEMBER… it’s always better to book services through a professional agency. You get top people and avoid a lot of trouble. - Dorothy Roberts wears many hats. She is the manager of Vandor Geriatric Homecare Inc. ALF and Adult Day Care, she is the President of Food Distribution Ministry for Lael Baptist Church, and as part of the Harvest Reapers Mission has dedicated her life to the cause of feeding the hungry. Last year, Vandor Geriatric fed 7,949 families. This past month about 750 families were fed with an average of 200 per week; however, this nonprofit organization has come to the point where they are in desperate need of assistance from the community. This locally owned food pantry requires donations of vans, storage and freezer space to continue making a difference for others. Although seniors and frail adults are the focus of the organization, the need for food assistance and clothing has increased rapidly over the years to include everyone who is in need. “We serve people on a daily basis,” said Vandor Geriatrics Owner and Administrator Dorothy Roberts. “We are available 24/7 for any hungry emergency call, and on Saturdays HOLLYWOOD

between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon, dedicated to people near and far.” Vandor Geriatric also provides access to various rehabilitation and outreach programs in addition to home deliveries to the elderly and disabled from Dania to Miami. Vandor also offers daycare for seniors at $12 per hour providing three meals and snacks. “The majority of young adults who come to us always express their desire to get a job,” Roberts explained. “The seniors have long been the backbone of this great community, and to go to bed without a proper meal to eat, we all ask how is that possible in this great country?,” adding, “no one should go hungry in America.” This raises a lot of questions. Why is hunger such an issue in America, why are seniors being evicted at such an alarming rate, why are so many forced to beg for food in the most affluent country in the world? “I guess there are more questions than answers, so I’ll keep doing my part,” Dorothy explained. “We have been seeking grants or donations, but have not been met with any success at all.” The purpose of the grant
requests is two-fold: the facility, located at 2110 N. 46th Ave, Hollywood is in need of repairs mainly the roof- in the amount of $25,000, and the second grant request is for a Mobile home or structure with refrigerators to preserve the food for the 200 people Lael Baptist Church feeds weekly. The statistics are staggering. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development “the national rate of homelessness was 20 homeless people per 10,000 people in the general population.” The report also stated that “a majority of the homeless population is comprised of individual adults (394,379 people) and 16% (99,894 people) are considered chronically homeless, meaning they are living with a disability and staying in shelters or on the streets for long periods of time or repeatedly.” Hunger is a reality for millions of Americans, and many are able-bodied adults, children, and seniors who simply cannot afford food due to other expenses and have to skip meals
or go days without eating at times. Dorothy also points out that hunger and race are related. “In 1991 46% of African-American children were chronically hungry, and 40% of Latino children were chronically hungry compared to 16% of white children.” Here are more grim statistics regarding food waste. Approximately 40-50% of the food America produces is thrown away. Recent statistics show that every day Americans fill an entire 90,000 seat football stadium, which is between 160 to 295 billion pounds. This is equivalent to each American throwing 400 pounds of food away each year. Furthermore, 1 in 6 children do not know where their next meal will come from. A recent study found that if the amount of food waste was even partially corrected this could save American consumers and manufacturers billions of dollars a year. This is why the work Dorothy does is so important. She has a lot of supporters but needs more help. “I cannot say enough about my husband, Scott Roberts and
the many, many volunteers for what they do to make this all possible,” she explained. One of those supporters is Claire Poole-Stern and her husband Stanley Stern, who also operate a non-profit organization called Treats For Soldiers that sends care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan. Claire has donated nearly 2,000 packages over the last 8 years, and the U.S. Army in turn has awarded her the Freedom Team Salute Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding contributions. The relationship between the two organizations is a close one, as Claire Pool-Stern’s motto is, “one charity helping another.” Some businesses in the community have also been supportive with food donations, especially Lavar Miller, Director of the Winn-Dixie in Hallandale Beach. Local businesses are encouraged to help any way they can, and even members of the community can donate. And since they have 501(c)3 status any donations to Vandor Geriatric Homecare are taxdeductible. USA SELF STORAGE at 500 State Rd 7 Hollywood has been an integral part of their success, giving one year storage space for clothing, canned goods, and various sundries to make sure those in need have the things vital to survival. “We have two old vehicles 15 and 18 years old that we use to pick up food from Feeding South Florida and Crossroads Food Bank,” said Roberts. “To keep them running has been costing a fortune. What we would really like is a used U-Haul truck, which would ensure we would do no further damage to the only vehicles we have.” This Thanksgiving they will receive 500 Turkeys but need a refrigerator or storage unit by or before that time. Also, they will be giving 450 pre-made turkey dinners to be served on Thursday 11/28 from 1-3pm. There is no such thing as a self-made person, everyone gets to where they are with the assistance of others, and Dorothy Roberts, with over 30 years of experience helping others, now needs your help.

It’s not child’s play: Buying the right video games for kids (BPT) - The upcoming holiday season has parents and family members focused on finding the perfect gift for their loved ones. With this year’s release of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One joining the new Wii U, video games are bound to once again be at the top of wish lists. With a vast selection of titles and genres, there is something for every player. While choosing the right game may be perplexing to some parents, figuring out which games are suitable for your child doesn’t have to be. Remember to ask these important questions before giving video games and other interactive content as a gift: Is it age-appropriate? Don’t judge a game by its cover. While the pictures on the box can sometimes tip parents off, they may not always tell the whole story. It is important for parents to check a game’s age rating as well as its content descriptors, which indicate the
types of content that contributed to the rating. Ratings are assigned by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), which is a nonprofit self-regulatory body that gives parents the tools to make informed decisions about the suitability of video games and mobile apps. In addition to checking the age rating and content descriptors on the game box, shoppers can conveniently use the ESRB mobile app available on Apple, Android and Windows devices - to find a game’s Rating Summary. These offer a more detailed and comprehensive look at the nature of the game, including specific examples of the content parents would want to know about. Are there interactive elements? If an online game or mobile app includes elements such as sharing user-provided personal information, broadcasting a
user’s location or allowing players to interact through chat or share user-generated content, parents may want to know before letting their children play it. Just as parents would monitor whom their children are interacting with in school, it is important that they monitor their children’s online acquaintances and what information they are sharing. That’s why the ESRB recently added a new component to its rating system, called Interactive Elements. These notices - which are accessible at ESRB.org or via ESRB’s mobile app - advise parents when an online game or mobile app has these types of interactive aspects, giving parents a way to make sure their children’s experience is as secure as it is age-appropriate. Virtuoso Misha Dacic opens Miami International Piano Festival on Nov. 17 The Festival kicks off the Sundays at Five series of four salon-style programs at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center AVENTURA - A few weeks before his upcoming performance, the Miami International Piano Festival caught up with Misha Dacic who is back in Miami after several months of concerts in Europe. The Festival kicks off the Sundays at Five series of four salon-style programs at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on November 17. This highly anticipated performance by Misha Dacic will also open the 17th annual Season of the Miami International Piano Festival. This is the Festival’s third year presenting concerts in this beautiful Aventura venue, and the programs have become popular with local classic music lovers. Misha first performed at the Festival 10 years ago and has presented, have been praised across the U.S. as well as in Central and South America, Europe and Japan. His story is unique. It epitomizes the mission of the Festival and its goal to further the careers of exceptional artists.

After graduating from UM, I got my Master’s degree at FIU, where I returned back to those old times once again studying with Kemal, who is FIU’s Artist in Residence. MIPF – Where there any other opportunities that developed from your association with the Festival? MD- Right after my debut in 2003, I met my American parents, Carlton and Andrea Cole, with whom I’ve been living off and on ever since. Giselle recommended me to numerous venues and festivals all around the US such as Ravinia’s Rising Stars series and the Gilmore Festival. She also came up with some great musical collaborations for me with artists like Ida Haendel, Gilles Apap, and many others. MIPF – How do you feel
about opening the Festival’s 17th Season this month and what have you chosen to perform? MD – To play in the Festival is like playing at home. That does not make it comfortable, as it may sound, but is quite the opposite. It is hard to play for friends and for those people who have been coming to all your concerts for the past ten years. My program is somehow built around the idea of adjusting music to the piano which was not originally written for it – Bach did not write his Partita No.2 for the instrument we use today; Tchaikovsky’s Scherzo comes from the sixth Symphony (piano arrangement by Feinberg) and his little Lullaby is a song written for voice (arranged by Volodos); Albeniz may evoke the sound of Spanish flamenco guitars and so on. I fell in love with Mozart lately and particularly with his

operas and his orchestral works. My initial idea was to play Mozart’s well known Symphony No.40, arranged for piano by his pupil Hummel, but Pappageno and his companions will show up on stage instead in my own arrangement of the Overture for The Magic Flute. MIPF – What a great program! We hope you get a great turnout for what promises to be a truly spectacular concert by an incredibly gifted artist. The 2014 Season continues with performances of other extraordinary artists during its three exciting series: Sundays at Five, a classical salon-style series at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, will continue with performances on January 12, February 23 and April 27. The Master Series, “Romantic Spectrum” at the Amaturo Theatre of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts will focus on the works of Chopin, Schumann and Liszt on March 23 – March 25. The Discovery Series our crown jewel at the historic Art Deco Colony Theatre on Miami Beach will present four successive evenings of brilliant piano recitals by recently discovered artists on May 15 – May 18.

MIPF – How did your first performance at the Festival come about? MD – I was living and studying in Italy at the time, but spending a summer at home in Serbia in 2002, when I had the chance to meet my former teacher, Kemal Gekic. Several years had passed since I was out of country, and we reminisced about the past. Maestro asked me to play Medtner’s SonataReminiscenza. At the same time, our mutual friend, pianist and piano teacher, Alan Fraser, offered to record this and several other pieces I had in my fingers back then. Kemal decided to take the recording to the US and share it with someone who was constantly hunting for pianists around the world. It was Giselle Brodsky, the founder and Artistic Director of the Festival. I guess she liked what she heard because the next thing I knew I was booked to perform Medtner, among others, in May of 2003. MIPF - What happened next? MD - Giselle suggested that I

Before he starred in 21 Jump Street, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, Johnny Depp was one of those students who suffered through creative growing pains. Born 50 years ago in Owensboro, K.Y., Depp’s family moved to south Florida - where he would blend into a Miramar landscape that was home to thousands of young men and women, trying to find that niche’ that would propel them to that next level. While Depp’s future was still in the balance as he attended Miramar High School, his father, Johnny Depp, Sr., worked in the city of Hallandale Beach as a Civil Engineer - far removed from the exciting life that his son would one day lead.
The Depp family had made Florida home - and while several teachers and friends always admitted that Depp was creative, he ended up dropping out of school at 16, joining the garage band, The Kids. The group became successful enough to open for the Talking Heads and the B-52s, but they barely made ends meet. It wasn’t until that initial role on 21 Jump Street that started to define his career. Most recall John Depp, Sr. as a hard-working and very quiet person. Many never heard much about his son when he first took the job in Hallandale Beach. But things would soon change. “I remember seeing John Depp, Sr. around City Hall from time to time,” longtime Hallandale Beach resident Tonya Alvarez remembered. “It wasn’t until his son began to
appear on TV that people began to talk and show more and more interest.” For Mike Angulo, who attended middle school and high school with the younger Depp, he always recalled someone who was quiet and remained away from the spotlight. He thought that the move from Kentucky attributed to his rebellion. “From what I remember about Johnny is that he was usually keeping to himself,” Angulo said. “He was never one of those people that you would automatically associate with outgoing.” Almost Passed On A Great Role As much as that first job turned out to be just the thing that would help launch his career, Depp almost didn’t take the role.
“I got a call from my agents, who said, “These people want you to come and read for this TV thing, Depp said. “And I said, “No, no, no, no, no”. I didn’t want to sign some big contract that would bind me for years. So they hired somebody else to do it, and they fired him after about a month, and then they called me again and said, “Would you please come in and do it?” My agent said, “The average span of a TV series is thirteen episodes, if that. One season.” So I said OK.” That decision indeed made this unique and gifted athlete what he is today. A well versed actor who is never afraid to take a challenge, and while many of his films have been grand successes, he has also stumbled upon some roles that were not as popular. “You take chances,” Depp
said. “You get a feeling and sometimes you are right. There are other times that things don’t work out the way you hoped. You just back up and do what you love.” His Character Roles Are Legendary As much as he was applauded for many of his movies, it’s his roles that often takes Depp to that next level. People such as Ed Wood in Ed Wood, Joseph D. Pistone in Donnie Brasco, Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and George Jung in Blow. It was Blow where many started to see this multitalented actor truly immerse himself in a role. He did the same as bank robber John Dillinger in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. Depp also starred in the Tim Burton comedy Dark Shadows in 2012. In the film, he plays Barnabas Collins, a vampire who escapes imprisonment and returns to his family home. Depp was a longtime fan of the film’s source material—the late 1960s gothic soap opera Dark Shadows—and encouraged friend Burton to bring it to the big screen. Music Passion In addition his early years, struggling to make ends meet, Depp’s love for music came after his mother bought him a guitar when he was 12. Depp subsequently collaborated with the band Rock City Angels and co-wrote the song “Mary”, which appeared on their debut for Geffen Records, “Young Man’s Blues”. He has long been a fan of The Rolling Stones and the gypsy musical group Taraf de Haidouks with whom he is friends. Depp remains friends with many in the industry today. While Depp doesn’t come back to south Florida too much these days, his association with the region is something that his local fans will always hold close to their hearts. NORTH MIAMI BEACH - The most common cause of heel pain here in the United States is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Athletes are affected, as well as soldiers, sales people on their feet over long periods of time and those who are overweight. It can affect one foot or both. What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fascia is the flat band of ligament that connects our heel bones to our toes. The plantar fasciia supports the arches of our feet. If it becomes strained by walking, running or standing for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces, it can become weak, swollen and irritated, resulting in severe heel pain. People with flat feet or high arches are prone to this condition. Pronation (rolling of the feet inward when walking) is also a predictor of plantar fasciitis. Those with tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles are at risk for this, as well as people who are
overweight, or wear shoes that don’t fit well or are worn out. Pain is usually felt in the heel and foot with the first step out of bed in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time. It is also likely to be felt after standing for a long period of time or when climbing stairs. How is plantar fasciitis diagnosed? After an indepth assessment of your medical history that would include past injuries and illnesses as well as current conditions under treatment, your podiatrist will assess how you stand and walk, where the pain is, what time of day you experience the most pain, and your level of physical activity. He or she may even xray your foot to rule out a stress fracture.

NSAIDS like Advil or other antiinflammatories such as Tylenol or Aspirin may be prescribed to reduce the painful inflammation, or ice applications may help. A single mom’s million-dollar idea to kill lice with salt (BPT) - For Wendy Langley, a nightmare ordeal with head lice has turned into a multimillion dollar dream. With sheer determination and passion, the Oregon mother has turned the head lice industry on its head with a product that kills lice with, of all things, salt. The trauma of that experience lingered with Langley. “All I could think about was all the parents out there who were facing the same horrible ordeal that I did.” With that, she became a mother on a mission to help her daughter and the millions of parents looking for a nontoxic and safe alternative to killing lice.
