Hottest hair trend of 2015: Curls are in (BPT) - Pack away that flat iron because curls are making a comeback. Trend watchers are praising curly hair as celebrities, politicians and even business leaders are starting to embrace their curly tresses. From runways and the big screen, to boardrooms and capital buildings, curls are taking center stage.

A third of American women have curly hair, according to Kantar Worldpanel’s Ethnic Hair Analysis. Yet a Dove Hair study found that 70 percent of women with curly hair feel they need to regularly “tame” their curls, and only 10 percent said they were proud of their curly hair.

“I work with many women who love their beautiful curls, but often struggle to manage them, and instead opt for flat irons or chemical straightening,” says celebrity stylist Cynthia Alvarez, a curl expert for Dove Hair. “But curls are having their

moment. The secret to rediscovering a love of your curls is to keep them nourished so they are soft, smooth and defined.”

Spread the love: One of the easiest ways to play with grilled cheese is to add different spreads to the sandwich.

Put a lid on it: Use a quality nonstick pan with a lid. That way, the sandwich gets a golden exterior and the cheese is

sure to melt when on a low heat and covered with a lid. Adding a shot of water can create a steamy environment and encourage the cheese to melt even more.

Think outside the sandwich: Another thing people don’t always think about is putting your cheese on the outside of the sandwich, instead of just on the inside.

Mix grated cheese with butter, garlic and herbs, and spread it on the outside of the sandwich to create a crusty, crunchy but totally delicious bite from the outside in.

Drawbacks Of Hiring Your Own Aide

This one is the most frequently asked questions I am asked: Why should I go through an agency when I can hire my own aide and pay less per hour?

Remember the age-old adage “You get what you pay for”? You may pay less for your aide hourly, but when you hire independently, do you really know what you are getting yourself into?

These are just a few of the complaints that I have heard from patients who contacted us: • Things seem to disappear too often • She didn’t listen to what I wanted • She got so bossy that I felt like I was the employee • With her problems, I felt that I needed to help her with extra money • She kept coming late and leaving early • She was on her cell phone all the time • She was nervous driving to unfamiliar addresses, even to the doctor • She did not cook the way I like and would not listen to my suggestions • She didn’t buy the brands or cuts of meat that I wanted • She didn’t dress appropriately and when we went out, I was embarassed.

Spice Up Mother’s Day This Year!

Did you ever notice that when it comes to Mother’s Day, nobody seems to have a budget?

Mom has always been that one driving force in nearly everyone’s life. She is that person who has made many sacrifices for you and the family. While fathers often have that strong image, it’s mom that we all shared things with and knew she would be there, most of the time, with an encouraging word.

For Allison Meyers of North Miami Beach, the thought of her mother and what she represented - until her passing five years ago - brought out some strong feelings about Mother’s Day. “While Easter, Christmas, Hannukah or any other holiday may surpass Mother’s Day in actual sales, what we do for our mothers every year on this day is a little over the top,” Meyers explained. “I think that what a mother stands for in just about every household is certainly something that one day wouldn’t allow you to give back.”

Indeed, what we will spend on mom this May 10th is going to be more than we did last year - and statistics back that up strongly. From breakfast, lunch and a dinner - to flowers, candy, clothing, jewelry and just about anything else that will go over the top, we all pull out the stops when it comes to what we do for mom.

Mother’s Day is the second-biggest holiday in terms of consumer spending and this year Americans are expected to spend between $18 billion and $19.8 billion to show mom how much they care, according to two new surveys that were recently taken.

The Key To Mom’s Heart We know by now that everyone is different, and while jewelry, candy, gift cards and flowers are the norm for some others love for their special day to have someone else in the kitchen and making that one-of-a-kind dinner that mom doesn’t usually have the time to prepare.

Richard Walker, who lives and works in Aventura, found that cooking dinner for his mother - with other siblings - is certainly the key to what makes her happy.

“Mom would love if we did this all the time,” Walker said. “But she fed seven people for many, many years, so we felt that this was the perfect gift, although my sisters spoil her with other great things, too.”

Who doesn’t love that home-cooked meal in the comfort of your home,

surrounded by family? That is really the perfect gift - as we give you some recipes that you may want to try at home, for this always popular day.

Something Good Is Cooking This year, you can spice up mom’s day with a Mexican dinner that includes Spicy Quesadillas with Remoulade Dipping Sauce, Mexican Rice, Spicy Cheesy Refried Beans and a very sweet and delicious Flan to end a great meal.

Spicy Quesadillas With Remoulade Dipping Sauce Ingredients Cooking spray 3/4 pound shrimp, peeled, deveined and cooked* 2 green onions, thinly sliced 2-3 teaspoons Cajun seasoning 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack or Pepper Jack Cheese 6-8 6-inch flour tortillas Remoulade Dipping Sauce (recipe below) *Tip: Remove the tails and leave the shrimp whole, or roughly chop into smaller pieces. Also, feel free to substitute shredded chicken or diced, cooked Andouille sausage.

Instructions Preheat oven to 400 F. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Toss shrimp with green onions, Cajun seasoning and cheese. Spread 1/2 cup of filling over half of the tortillas, then top each with remaining tortillas. Press down lightly, and spray each side with cooking spray.

Bake 5 minutes on one side, flip and bake 5 minutes on the other side until cheese melts and it’s a crisp, golden brown.

Let stand a few minutes, then cut into wedges. Serve with Remoulade Sauce for dipping.

Remoulade Sauce Makes: 1 cup Ingredients Juice of 1/2 lemon 1/2 cup onion, roughly chopped 2 green onions, roughly chopped 1/4 cup celery, roughly chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish 2 tablespoons mustard 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 tablespoon fresh Italian parsley 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/8 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper Black pepper, to taste Instructions Combine ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix until almost

smooth.

Season with black pepper and chill until ready to serve.

Assembly & Cooking Tips Use a biscuit or cookie cutter to make mini tortilla rounds, perfect as appetizers.

Instead of sandwiching ingredients between two tortillas, fill and fold one tortilla in half, then cook and cut into wedges.

To pan-fry: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium-hot skillet, then cook 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crisp.

To grill: Spray grill grates with cooking spray before lighting, then grill quesadillas on medium-high heat, about 2 minutes per side or until lightly charred and crisp.

Tip: Be careful not to overfill tortillas if you plan on grilling them.

Mexican Rice Ingredients 1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes 1 medium onion, peeled and roughly chopped 2 cups chicken stock 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/3 cup neutral cooking oil, such as canola or safflower (or rendered lard) 2 cups long-grain white rice 1 to 2 Chile Peppers, such as Jalapeño or Serrano, seeded and minced 4 to 5 garlic cloves, pressed 1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro Juice from 2 limes, plus additional wedges for serving Instructions Place the tomatoes and onion in a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Transfer 2 cups of the tomato mixture to a medium saucepan. Stir in the chicken stock, salt, and cumin and bring liquid to a boil over medium heat.

(Reserve excess for another use, like Tomato Sauce.)

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a heavy Dutch oven over medium to mediumhigh heat. When the oil is sizzling, add the rice and sauté, stirring frequently until lightly toasted and golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the Jalapeños and cook until they have softened, about 2 minutes, lowering the heat if necessary. Add garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.

Pour the boiling tomato mixture over the rice and stir to combine. Turn heat to low and cook, covered, until liquid has evaporated and rice is done, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and gently

stir the rice. Re-cover the pot and allow to rest undisturbed for an additional 10 minutes. Add cilantro and lime juice; fluff gently with a fork. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired. Serve with additional lime wedges.

Spicy Cheesy Refried Beans Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 1/4 cup chopped onion 1 tablespoon chopped garlic 1 (16 ounce) can spicy fat-free refried beans 1 (4 ounce) package cream cheese 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; cook and stir onion and garlic until onion becomes translucent, 2 to 3 minutes.

Cook and stir refried beans into onion mixture until heated through, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir cream cheese into bean mixture. Spread mixture into a pie plate; top with Cheddar cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted and bubbling, about 20 minutes.

Flan Makes 4 servings Ingredients 1/2 cup white sugar 2 cups milk 2 eggs, beaten 2 egg yolks, beaten 3/8 cup white sugar Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a heavy bottomed saucepan over medium heat, melt 1/2 cup sugar until golden. Carefully pour hot sugar evenly into four oven-proof ramekins or custard cups, tilting cups to coat bottoms evenly.

In another saucepan, bring milk just to boiling over medium heat. Stir hot milk, a little at a time, into beaten eggs and egg yolks, until well combined. Stir in sugar.

Pour milk mixture evenly into ramekins.

Line a roasting pan with a damp kitchen towel. Place ramekins on towel, inside roasting pan, and place roasting pan on oven rack. Fill roasting pan with boiling water to reach halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

Bake in preheated oven 40 minutes, until set. Let cool, invert and serve.

5 tips to slash prescription drug costs (BPT) - Today’s rising health care costs can feel out of control. Fortunately, prescription drugs are an exception.

Consider these five simple ways to save money on your prescriptions so you can stay healthy and maintain your budget.

1. Ask about generic or lower-cost equivalents. Your health plan has a list of covered prescription drugs, called a formulary. Within that list are preferred drugs, which have a lower copayment cost for the patient. These are clinical or therapeutic equivalents to higher-priced brand drugs.

Always ask your prescriber or pharmacist, “Is there a generic for that?”

It’s a fair question. Many physicians write for the familiar brands, the “tried and true,” or the newest, most highly marketed drug in the therapy class. Until you ask, they may not be well acquainted with lower-cost equivalents on your particular plan’s formulary.

2. Don’t be duped by drug coupons.

Hundreds of high-priced brand drugs offer coupons that apply to the consumer’s share of the drug’s cost. But

beware: A temporary discount may end up costing you more in the long run. A recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that 62 percent of coupons were for brand-name drugs for which lower-cost alternatives were available.

“Despite the short-term savings achievable with coupons, they do not offset higher, long-term costs because they’re nearly always time-delimited,” the study states. “Some coupons can be used once and others more than once. But we found that few offered savings for more than a year. Once a coupon program ends, patients with chronic disease face copayments for these brand-name medications that are higher than for those generic alternatives.”

3. Use preferred retail pharmacies for acute medications. Many prescription plans offer a preferred network of retail pharmacies within a wider network.

These plans allow you to save between $5 and $10 on copayments just by choosing a preferred pharmacy. Chances are good that a preferred pharmacy is conveniently

located near you.

Before you fill a prescription for an acute medication, such as an antibiotic or painkiller, use your plan’s pharmacy locater to find a preferred option. And inform your doctor, as he or she may now send electronic prescriptions directly to the pharmacy.

Medicare patients choosing a prescription plan should look for one that offers preferred networks. Savings at the pharmacy window can easily exceed any small difference in premium amount.

4. Use home delivery for chronic or maintenance medications. With home delivery, many patients can save up to 33 percent on their copayment costs and have the medication delivered right to their door.

Home delivery is a safe and convenient way to obtain medications that you use long term. Many pharmacy plans will provide you with a 90-day supply for a lower copayment. Be sure to tell your doctor that you use home delivery so your

prescription can be written for a 90-day supply.

There’s an important bonus that can save you even more: Patients using home delivery are more likely to take their medication as prescribed (see No. 5).

5. Take your medications as prescribed. While it might be tempting to stretch your medication dollar by skipping daily doses, this can be harmful to your health and end up costing you significantly more money to treat the health complications that could have been avoided.

Adherence to your prescribed therapy is the best way to make sure you get the most from your pharmacy benefit. Take your medication at the proper time and frequency as indicated by your doctor, and refill and renew prescriptions as early as possible so you are never emptyhanded. Living a longer healthy life is a joint venture between you, your family and your doctor.

Prevention is the key. Regular checkups are critical. Lab studies and diagnostic tests reveal a lot, alerting the doctor to a developing problem that can be controlled at an early stage.

When symptoms appear, the problem already has had an effect.

Medications play their role.

Although they are compounded with certain actions in mind, medications react differently with each patient. The doctor’s decision is based on symptoms, current medications being taken, other conditions, status of the heart and blood pressure, effects other systems, and general lifestyle of the patient. The doctor monitors them carefully and may try a different plan of treatment.

I am a cardiologist, and when I prescribe for my patient, it is a careful balance of medications that are suited to the heart problem in conjunction with other medications that the patient is

taking. For example, medications for high blood pressure are not all the same. There are alpha blockers, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, etc. They all have a particular function in controlling the pressure it takes for blood to pump through the heart and then out to the body.

Sometimes, we prescribe two or more at the same time. They need to be taken as directed since their interaction has a direct effect on your heart.

Supplements. Even though they are over-the-counter, claim to be natural and require no prescription, does not mean that herbals, vitamins and minerals cannot effect your body or medications that you are already taking. As an example, Vitamins A, C and E have anti-coagulant qualities. If you are taking Warfarin, and possibly baby aspirin, think about how you may be intensifying the anticoagulant effects in your blood, putting you at risk for additional bleeding. If an herbal sleep aid helps with your insomnia, it is affecting a level of brain action, which is a chemical reaction. Advise your doctor

of the supplements you are considering or already taking.

Diet and hydration. When advised to limit salt, sugar, white flour and fried foods, take that seriously.

Taking medication to stabilize your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol is a wake-up call, not a license to continue bad habits. A sufficient amount of fluids, particularly water, provides volume in the blood for proper distribution of oxygen through your red blood cells. It is necessary for digestion and elimination, and provides general hydration throughout your system. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrating.

Patient’s role. It is very important for patients to take all medications as directed and for the entire time prescribed. many patients will stop taking their antibiotic when they feel better.

This is the worst thing to do, since your body is not entirely rid of the bacteria, and it can re-flourish and return with a vengeance, now resistant to that particular type of medication. Be sure to take medication with at least a half glass of water for quick delivery to the stomach, where it will begin to break up for proper digestion and absorption.

Family support is equally important. However, with their concern for you and best intentions, their guidance and advice should be checked out with the doctor, and that includes all the supplements that they are quick to suggest.

Remember. Good health and living a healthier, longer life is a team effort, and each player has his or her very important role to play. How is your team doing?

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain.

“When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon.

“Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”
