Hall Of Fame Jockeys Have More Than Horses In Common

Donald Brumfield, Hall of Fame Jockey, and his two Hall of Fame Jockey friends have all had their cataract surgery done by Dr. Stanley Braverman. Donald Brumfield will never forget the day he won the Kentucky Derby, riding a horse named Kauai King to victory at Churchill Downs. “It was the thrill of my life,” he recalls about that day in 1966. “I felt on top of the world.” Later that year, Donald and Kauai King also won the Preakness, taking two legs of the Triple Crown. When Donald started riding Kauai King for trainer Henry Forrest in 1965, he knew right away there was something unique about his mount. “I thought he was a special horse with a lot of ability,” he recalls. Bred in Maryland, Kauai King had a history in South Florida well before his run in the Kentucky Derby. As a three-yearold, he was stabled at Hialeah, where he won easily. “I told a

jockey friend, ‘that’s going to be my Derby horse,’” Donald remembers. Next came Gulfstream Park, where Kauai King finished a tantalizing second in the Hutchinson Stakes. “But he came back to win Gulfstream’s Fountain of Youth race,” Donald says. A disappointment followed, however. “He ran in the Florida Derby, and he didn’t do well,” Donald says. “But these things happen. Horses have problems, just like humans. They have aches and pains, and they don’t win every time.” Things were different when the two went to race the Governor’s Gold Cup in Maryland. “He won, and he won very easily,” Donald says. “His confidence got better. When a horse wins a race, it builds his confidence.” Donald thinks that new-found confidence helped Kauai King perform his best at Churchill

Downs. It was an unforgettable day. “I think he knew he won,” Donald says. “I’m sure he was thrilled.” A horse and jockey develop a relationship, Donald says. “There’s a rapport between you. I was very fortunate during my career to have an opportunity to ride some good horses. What makes a good jockey is a good horse.” Now 74, Donald hasn’t left the world of Thoroughbred horses. Instead of riding, however, he works as a racing official at Gulfstream Park. His vision is very important to him, so when he noticed that his ability to see clearly was deteriorating, he went to see Dr. Stanley Braverman at the Braverman Eye Center. At the time, Donald wore glasses, and he thought he needed a new prescription. “But that wasn’t the case,” says the Kentucky native who now lives full time in South Florida. “When

Dr. Braverman tested my eyes, my prescription hadn’t changed. He told me I had cataracts.” To eliminate the cataracts that were causing the trouble, Donald underwent a simple surgical procedure, and today, his vision is excellent. “It took about 10 minutes, and there was no pain whatsoever,” he says. “Dr. Braverman has done surgery on a couple of my jockey friends, too. He is very thorough”. The other jockeys were also both very famous. One won the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby riding CarryBack in 1961 and the other won over 6000 races making him the winningest jockey in the history of horse racing. Because of their jockey excellence, they have all been inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Another thing that they all have in common, is they all have had cataract surgery by Dr. Stanley Braverman. Since he had the procedure, Donald has been able to put away his glasses unless he is reading fine print. “My vision is very good now,” he says. “I drive without glasses, I watch TV without glasses, I do most everything without glasses. I like not having to wear them.” He’s very pleased with the results. “I had a good experience,” he says. “‘I’m glad I went to see Dr. Braverman.” WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two

conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses. CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. Laser Assisted Cataract Extraction (LACE™ ) surgery, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. UNDERSTANDING HOME HEALTH By Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care

Thank you for your great response to this column. These are a few of some recent questions: I’m not able to manage my apartment or drive my car anymore. Will my long term care insurance cover someone to help me? Your long term care insurance covers personal care needed at home only. That means that your policy states that it will cover a home health aide who can help the insured person shower, dress, prepare light meals, do laundry, and straighten up bathroom and kitchen after using them for the care of the patient. The aide can also shop for the insured. Aides are professionals who have been trained with a required amount of state-approved hours in a legitimate training school to provide safe and efficient care with a degree of ethics. They are aware of the services they are allowed to provide under insurance coverage. Services requested other than the aforementioned needs to be agreed upon via a private arrangement between you and your aide. As an agency, we cannot and do not get involved in these arrangements when insurance is involved. But I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I

need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. So, what can I do? Those are considered private services. At Always Classic Care, we can provide them for you at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost, much as you arranged before you qualified for coverage from your long term care insurance. If you explain your needs to me, I can make wonderful recommendations for you. We can provide housecleaners and drivers who provide those services for a living, but are screened as well as our aides prior to our recommending them. Why should I go through an agency if I have to hire someone? I can use someone my neighbor uses. You definitely can hire whomever you like. However, you should consider the following items: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? All of our recommendations have had to be subjected to an FBI investigative screening. • Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? Are you sure? • Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes? We do. Many people are unaware of their responsibility

to IRS when hiring a household employee, or the aide’s legitimate status to work in this country. If you hire privately you are responsible for taxes, checking legal status and overtime pay. They are now your employee and you are legally an employer. REMEMBER… it’s always better to book services through a professional agency. You get top people and avoid a lot of trouble. Nick’s Restaurant is back! A Hallandale Beach landmark since 1969, returns better than ever before

The year was 1962, Nick Gianos opened a Harrison Street eatery in Hollywood that would soon establish itself as one of the best places to eat breakfast and a hearty lunch. With an opportunity to move to Hallandale Beach in 1969, when finding a great meal was nearly impossible, Gianos settled in and began a love affair with a community and a loyal client base that loved great food and being a part of a growing city. For over 40 years, Nick’s Restaurant became that

landmark - serving up some of the best eggs, omelets, french toast and breakfast sandwiches while establishing a solid lunch and dinner crowd with nightly specials that many have been talking about for generations. So popular had Nick’s Restaurant become that Gianos expanded in size twice by 1999, and before his death in 2002, was considered one of the most recognized businesses in Hallandale Beach. With his wife, Lois LovettGianos, left to run things over

the next seven years, in 2009, the landmark that had been so much a part of the south Florida landscape, had been sold. While the quality of the restaurant spiraled downward with the food and products not being what it had once was - the new ownership had taken a product that earned such a solid reputation - and lost plenty of loyal diners. The Return Of Nick’s While Nick’s eventually would close - the one person who really had the largest stake

in the entire future was the building owner Stephen Riemer, who instead of just holding on put his business sense into action - when he purchased the building with the idea of bringing back the original product - with a few major upgrades. Riemer, who owns a number of properties within Hallandale Beach, felt that in the best interest of the community and redeveloping “Schmatta Row”, the landmark was a must to bring back.

“Our idea, from the beginning was to keep the menu intact, but also make this facility a destination rather than just a neighborhood restaurant,” Riemer pointed out. “We have put in over $100,000 and three months into this to make the changes needed to give our customers the experience they deserve.” With a planned grand reopening scheduled for St. Patrick’s Day weekend (Mar. 1416), diners will start to notice the changes as soon as they walk in with new granite counters. What they will be greeted by now are specialty items that you can order in house as well as take home with you. “Jersey Shore Super Hotdogs, Old Monmouth Peanut Brittle, Goshen Farms Vermont Maple Syrup and other items you can only get here at Nick’s will always be featured,” Riemer explained. “You will also be greeted at the door by ‘Arthur’ our wooden manikin and even have the chance to play songs for just .5 cents on our Wurlitzer 750 Jukebox. There are a lot more great changes ahead as well.” The restaurant’s charm also will be enhanced by Riemer’s personal Tin Toy Collection that will bring out the kid in everyone of all ages.

Boomers: 5 daily tactics to defy aging in 10 minutes or less (BPT) - Determined, vivacious, passionate - a lot of words describe America’s estimated 78 million baby boomers. This spirited group is redefining their golden years, staying active by working, traveling and enjoying the great outdoors. They know that in order to live life to the fullest, they must make their health a priority, and many are dramatically affecting their personal well-being with a few key activities that take 10 minutes or less a day to complete. Tavis Piattoly is a sports dietitian, expert nutritionist and cofounder of My Sports Dietitian. He stresses that small daily activities can have a cumulative effect on health, and therefore encourages baby boomers to consistently stay active and eat well.

He suggests five ways boomers can keep their health on track in 10 minutes each day: 1. Quick exercises “Exercise should be enjoyable, so whether it is a brisk walk, strength training or participating in a sport, enjoying what you do will increase your chance of sticking with that activity,” says Piattoly. He recommends boomers incorporate strength training into their workout routine to prevent loss of muscle tissues - a concern that increases with aging. Here are three simple exercises: Chair squats - Use any chair and perform 10 to 12 repetitions standing up and sitting down. To increase difficulty, hold a light dumbbell to add resistance.

Wall push-ups - Place arms against a wall and perform 10 to 12 push-ups. If this is too easy, get into the push-up position on the floor, using your knees for support. Dumbbell curls or soup-can bicep curls - Use a light to moderate weight dumbbell (2 to 10 pounds) and perform 10 to 12 bicep curls. Don’t have dumbbells? Substitute soup cans. 2. Nutrient dense foods It takes only minutes to eat a snack or a meal, and what’s on your plate fuels your overall health. Piattoly recommends starting with an emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables. “As we age, our immune system is not as strong as it once was to fight off infections and ill-

In addition, research shows fish oil supplementation can reduce arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death, improve triglyceride levels, and increase HDL

(good cholesterol). “I recommend taking between 2000 and 3000 mg per day of triglyceride-based fish oil. I personally take and recommend Nordic Naturals. They’re the leading manufacturer of omega-3 supplements and all their products are tested for purity and safety.” Additionally, because between 50 to 75 percent of the population has a vitamin D deficiency, Piattoly recommends a vitamin D supplement. “Optimal levels of vitamin D may reduce your risk for cancer and heart disease, as well as improve bone health. Shoot for 2000 IU per day but be sure to speak with your doctor to determine how much you should take,” he says. 4. Embrace technology Numerous applications

Dr. Charlton Adler Heel Pain From Plantar Faciitis Affects 10% Of US Population By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer

NORTH MIAMI BEACH - The most common cause of heel pain here in the United States is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Athletes are affected, as well as soldiers, sales people on their feet over long periods of time and those who are overweight. It can affect one foot or both. What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fascia is the flat band of ligament that connects our heel bones to our toes. The plantar fasciia supports the arches of our feet. If it becomes strained by walking, running or standing for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces, it can become weak, swollen and irritated, resulting in severe heel pain. People with flat feet or high arches are prone to this condition. Pronation (rolling of the feet inward when walking) is also a predictor of plantar fasciitis. Those with tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles are at risk for this, as well as people who are

overweight, or wear shoes that don’t fit well or are worn out. Pain is usually felt in the heel and foot with the first step out of bed in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time. It is also likely to be felt after standing for a long period of time or when climbing stairs. How is plantar fasciitis diagnosed? After an indepth assessment of your medical history that would include past injuries and illnesses as well as current conditions under treatment, your podiatrist will assess how you stand and walk, where the pain is, what time of day you experience the most pain, and your level of physical activity. He or she may even xray your foot to rule out a stress fracture.

Proper screening can prevent more than half of these deaths. Screening catches the cancer early, when treatment works best. Talk to a doctor about when to start screening for colorectal cancer. Having a conversation with your rheumatologist is a start to getting the care you need. Studies show that early diagnosis and treatment of RA can help slow the progression of joint damage. “We recommend consulting with your doctor and telling them how RA affects your life,” says Ann M. Palmer, president and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation. “Your rheumatologist’s goal is to understand your symptoms and everyday challenges and work with you to develop a plan to help manage your disease.” RA can be difficult to diagnose, which can create a lag between the onset of symptoms and the initiation of treatment. The disease causes chronic inflammation in the lining of the joints, which can lead to decreased range of motion and permanent joint damage. Therefore, the sooner a patient discusses

potential treatment options with their rheumatologist, the better. The Arthritis Foundation suggests RA patients do some homework before visiting their doctor by “Taking P.A.R.T.” Taking P.A.R.T. means a patient should: • Prepare: You should keep a journal of symptoms and compile a list of questions for your doctor. List all of your medications, including prescriptions, over-thecounter remedies and even herbal supplements. • Ask questions: You should ask questions when-

ever something doesn’t seem clear and ask about treatment options that may fit your symptoms and lifestyle. This will help to ensure you understand what’s going on and how to best manage your condition. Keep it simple, specific and direct. • Repeat: Take notes and repeat the instructions and information you receive from your doctor to make sure you heard and understand it. Ask for written handouts and instructions. • Take action: Be part of the solution. Let your doctor know about your lifestyle, concerns and preferences so a treatment plan can be customized to your specific

needs.
