How to Best Cope with Summer Heat:

BE WEATHER READY (StatePoint) Summer can be hot, sticky and downright uncomfortable. It can also be dangerous if you are not prepared. Cope with the heat this summer and stay healthy and safe with these helpful tips. • Maintain your air conditioner. The last thing you need is a broken air conditioner on a hot day. Regular maintenance of your unit can help ensure it will work all summer long. The easiest, and perhaps most important, maintenance task you can perform yourself is to clean or change the filter routinely. For more complicated tasks, you may wish to hire a professional technician. Likewise, you’ll want to be sure your car’s air conditioner is in good working order, particularly before a major road trip or heat wave. • Stay informed with accurate weather information. Accurate weather information is one of the best ways to make informed decisions and be prepared for daily outdoor activities, family vacations and travel plans. Consider a source recognized for its

superior accuracy – the AccuWeather app can be a good go-to resource not only this summer, but year-round, to help keep you safe. It features AccuWeather MinuteCast, an exclusive minute-byminute precipitation forecast for the next two hours specific to your exact GPS location. Plus, the app’s AccuWeather RealFeel feature lets you know how it actually feels outside so you can properly plan for outdoor summer activities and the day ahead – from what to pack to what to wear. If you’re constantly on the go, don’t worry, because the app delivers severe weather push alert notifications that can help keep you safe and better prepared for anything that comes your way. The award-winning Accu Weather app is available on all of Android mobile devices, as well as on iOS, for free. • Know what to wear. During the summer, lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can make all the difference to your comfort. The less fabric you have actually touching your body, the

cooler you will be. • Schedule outdoor activities carefully. During periods of intense heat, stay indoors and, if at all possible, remain in an airconditioned location. If your home does not have air conditioning, consider going to a shopping mall or public library for a few hours – spending time in air conditioning will help your body stay cooler once you go back out into the elements. Limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening hours when it’s cooler. • Stay hydrated. Summer fun often means being outdoors, but listen to your body and take breaks to rest, rehydrate and cool off. Bring water or a sports drink with you when you are exercising, at the pool or even just making your way around town. Make sure to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can quickly dehydrate you. With up-to-the-minute knowledge at your fingertips and the right preparation, you will be ready to cope with heat and all weather conditions that the summer season brings every year.

Greatest Wealth Transfer Could Be Costly Blunder For Beneficiaries And Windfall For IRS Anyone who just inherited a deceased parent’s IRA or 401(k) could be about to commit a costly blunder. You can take the money from that retirement account in one big lump sum, no matter how young you are, but that will trigger a tax bill – probably a hefty one. “It’s tempting to take the lump sum, especially if it represents a huge windfall of cash for you,” says wealth management advisor Rebecca Walser of Walser Wealth (www.walserwealth.com). “But you should be aware it’s also a windfall for the IRS.” Walser, a successful tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in working with high net worth clients, says this issue will become an even more common one in the coming years as the aging Baby

Boomers die off, transferring their wealth to their Generation X and Millennial offspring. Some have called it the greatest wealth transfer in history, as over the next few decades the Boomers are expected to leave about $30 trillion in assets to their children and grandchildren. Part of that money is in taxdeferred retirement plans such as a traditional IRA or an employee-sponsored 401(k) that Baby Boomers have been contributing to for decades. They didn’t have to pay taxes on the money they contributed to those plans until they started withdrawing the money in retirement. Just to ensure those taxes aren’t deferred forever, the government requires a minimum withdrawal each year once the holder reaches age 701/2. The IRS also isn’t picky about

who does the paying, Walser says. It’s fine with collecting the taxes from heirs if the retiree dies before spending all the money. A spouse who inherits such an account falls under different rules, but Walser has advice for anyone else who finds themselves in this situation: Consider a tax strategy. If you inherit an IRA, think about your need for these gifted funds. If there is no need for the funds for at least five years, consider repositioning them into a taxadvantaged vehicle over the next five years and save yourself thousands of dollars in taxes over your lifetime. “We always prepare an RMD analysis and find that paying the tax man over the next five years, while we still have the second lowest tax base in U.S. history, is much more appealing than deferring the tax and then being trapped into pay-

ing them in a rising tax rate climate,” Walser says. Taxes must inevitably go up in the future, she says, because of our current federal debt of $20 Trillion combined with the concurrent retirement of the Boomers in mass. Understand what kind of account you inherited. The rules for a Roth IRA are different from the rules for a traditional IRA. Taxes were already paid on the money that was contributed to a Roth. If the Roth was funded more than five years before the person died, you won’t need to pay taxes when you take distributions. Don’t rush into a bad decision. You will face deadlines for when you have to make decisions (the IRS won’t remain patient forever), but there’s no need to be hasty and do something you’ll regret later, Walser says. If you don’t have a financial

advisor, she says, it would be wise to find one who can help you figure out what the best tax strategy will be for your situation. “Maybe you really do need the money, so taking the lump sum makes sense,” Walser says. “But I think most people who do that are going to regret it later, especially if they just blow all the money right away and don’t have anything to show for their inheritance.” About Rebecca Walser: Rebecca Walser is a licensed tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in working with high net worth individuals, families and businesses at Walser Wealth (www.walser wealth.com). She earned her juris doctor degree from the University of Florida and her masters of law degree in taxation from New York University.

Denture Problems?

CITY NEWS please call (305) 947-3525 Thousands of people come to Haulover Beach on a sunny day. Simply put, Haulover Beach is one of the best clothing-optional beaches in the world, as ranked by many online and print publications. As many as 7,000 people visit the beach in a single day. Because clothing is optional, some visitors remained clothed. Although Haulover Nude Beach is only a small portion of the larger Haulover Beach Park, approximately 66% to 85% of visitors use the nude beach area. Therefore, it is quite friendly to people who want to go nude and get an all over tan. Haulover Nude Beach is situated between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean and is part of Haulover Beach Park, the area for nude bathing is clearly marked with signs by the walkways to the beach.

SUMMER IS HERE Find Your Beach Paradise close to Aventura By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest

JUNE 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

While South Florida has great weather year round, it’s the summer that everyone talks about - and looks forward to. Now that many of the snowbirds have gone home and the beaches are less crowded, you can search for your oasis in the sand. This area is covered with public beaches and Aventura has so many options close by. Whether you are looking for fun with the family, time with your pet, alone time to catch up on a good book, or an all over tan, then you are only minutes from breaking out the lotion and sitting on your beach chair. With Memorial Day ushering in the summer, here in South Florida, although the weather has been warm and rain has been in the forecast for weeks; many are starting to make plans for sunny weekends ahead. As Marco Williams found out last year, when his five-year-old son was at the age where going to the beach was a priority, he was amazed at how many people simply love the water. “I have never been a water guy,” he said. “I grew up in Georgia and it was too far inland for the beach – and our community pool was always too crowded.” What Williams inherited when he moved south, got married and started to

have a family, living on the coast almost demands that spare time has to be spent on the beach – or doing something water related. Williams is not alone. The months of May, June, July, August and even into September, many events are centered around the water. Cookouts are all about the beach and the fun that goes along with it. “When we were kids, all of our family went to Haulover Beach,” Manny Simpkins of Aventura said. “Mom would pack the salads and desserts and dad would have everything you need to grill. It seemed like we would stay there all day.” What it’s all about here in South Florida, is getting out to the great beaches of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and living in Aventura you can be to any of them in minutes. LOCAL BEACHES ARE POPULAR There are so many local places to cool off this summer. The following is a listing of beaches that are all close to Aventura: HALLANDALE BEACH South City Beach Park 1870 S. CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring. Always Classic Care has offices in three counties and is prepared to meet all your care needs. Are Women Prepared For Life Alone As They Age?

JUNE 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 18

The trends are clear – as women age the odds are they will be living alone, largely because of either divorce or widowhood. What may be less clear for many of them is whether they are prepared for that life alone – both emotionally and financially, says Susan L. Hickey, a financial professional at Your Own Retirement LLC (www.yourownretirement.com/womansworth). “Although both men and women could live three or four decades in retirement, it’s more likely for women because they have longer life expectancies,” Hickey says. “But they also often have less in savings, and smaller or no pensions, so their longevity can work for them and against them.” Almost half (46 percent) of women who are 75 or older live alone, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living. But women, many of whom are heads of households, don’t always do a good job of planning for their retirements because they spend so much of their time thinking about the needs of others – their children, their spouses, their aging parents, Hickey says. “They need to realize that their happiness and security in their later years can hinge on so many things, and not just their savings,” she says. “So many factors come into play.” Hickey says some mistakes women make in planning for retirement, and what they can do to correct those mistakes, include: Failing to participate in planning. Many women traditionally have left the retirement planning to their husbands and that’s a mistake, Hickey says. Women should be actively involved. They need to understand their financial situation, what would happen if their spouse

dies and where all the important papers are kept. When a meeting happens with a financial professional, they should be part of that and help make the decisions. Underestimating how long they will live. For some reason, many women have trouble imagining just how long retirement might last. Life expectancy for women in the United States is about 81, and that’s an average. Many women will live into their 90s and some will pass 100. When planning and saving, women need to consider that they might still be living 30 or 40 years after they retire. Failing to protect their health. Maintaining your general health and well being is important because medical costs can eat into retirement money, Hickey says. The nest egg that someone thought would be more than sufficient can start disappearing quickly when there are significant medical issues. Women need to make sure they get exercise, eat healthy meals and keep up with those doctor visits. “So much of this is connected,” Hickey says. “When women feel that they have a good financial plan in place, they are more likely to feel secure and that’s good for both their physical health and their emotional health.” About Susan L. Hickey: Susan L. Hickey (www.yourownretirement.com/womansworth) is a

financial professional at Your Own Retirement, LLC. She helps guide clients, many of which are single women or female heads of households, on the many facets of planning for retirement. Because of her advocacy Sue combines numerous elements of retirement income planning through the use of insurance products, which includes strategies for claiming social security benefits, Medicare

costs, long-term care concerns as well as traditional income needs. She holds her life and health insurance licenses, and has earned the distinguished Retirement Income Certified Professional designation.

mother gave her a 1978 Dodge Aspen. Practically Perfect Gift Ideas for Dad

JUNE 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 20

(Family Features) If you’ve heard giving practical gifts is a no-no, scratch that advice because when it comes to dads, functional gifts that show you appreciate their personal interests may actually be the safest bet this Father’s Day. Consider the hobbies and activities that dad treasures most then look for ways you can turn those pastimes into gifts that he can not only appreciate but put to good use. Celebrate His Sports Obsession: No matter his favorite sport or team, you can find countless ways to please an avid sports fan. Obvious options like T-shirts and baseball caps are always winners, but you can find plenty of creative and useful ways to celebrate dad’s favorite team, too. Practical ideas to help trick out his car include new floor mats, headrest covers and even valve stem covers. You could also go more whimsical with stainless steel knives or salt and pepper shakers bearing the team logo. Visit the team store

or search online for the perfect gift. Boost His Golf Game: Help dad improve his score and complete rounds faster with the advanced technology of a rangefinder. An option such as one of Leupold’s GX-1i3, GX-2i3 and GX-5i3 rangefinders provide fast, easy and accurate ranging to give golfers an edge on the course. With the customization features of the GX-2i3 and GX-5i3, you’ll practically be gifting dad a personal caddie. Learn more at leupold.com/golf. Feed His Cravings: For the at-home chef, functional gift ideas are nearly endless. Try narrowing down the options by choosing his favorite cuisine. If Mexican cuisine is his thing, look for less common but highly useful items like taco holders or condiment dishes to hold a serving of freshly made salsa. Or go a more experimental route with a custom kit that lets dad make his own beer, cheese or jerky at home. An online search will reveal a stockpile of ideas, so your

biggest challenge will be narrowing down the menu. Add a Tool to His Belt: If your dad is a handy man, you may think he’s got every tool and gadget imaginable. The truth is, most handymen will agree you can never have too many tools. Think about the projects he tackles most often; those are the items that may be worn and in need of replacing. If there’s a task he struggles to complete, consult with an expert at your local hardware store to determine whether there are devices that could help make it easier. Expand His Artistic Interests: When the arts are more up dad’s alley, you can make it easier for him to appreciate the genre he loves best. A reading lamp or monogrammed bookmark is perfect for

the book worm, while a visit to a gallery showing or performance may be just the ticket for a dad who enjoys exploring artistic talent or experiencing the arts live.

Father’s Day is a time to show dad your gratitude and love, and he’s sure to appreciate knowing that you care enough to give a gift he truly can use and enjoy.

HEALTH

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish. For additional information, feel free to view his website at www.miamifootankle.com, or call for an appointment at 305-935-3999.

HEALTH How to Keep Lips Healthy and Hydrated (StatePoint) Lips can be especially susceptible to the elements, leaving them dry and chapped. To keep your pucker healthy and hydrated, consider the following tips from the makers of Carmex lip balms, and Dr. Neil Sadick, M.D., a New York City-based dermatologist. • Lower humidity can deplete and dehydrate lips. While it can be tempting to lick one’s lips, unfortunately, this approach will only make the problem worse -- as saliva draws moisture out of the lips as it evaporates. Instead, keep lips hydrated from the inside out by drinking plenty of water. • Use moisturizing lip balms with ingredients that will seal in moisture and stay on your lips. If you are not allergic to sunscreen, use a product with SPF 15 or higher, such as the Carmex Lip Balm Stick, to protect from the sun -- not just on sunny days, but every day. Make a habit of applying lip balm three to four times daily, ensuring that one application is before bedtime. • Avoid high gloss lipsticks with littleto-no color. They can be potentially harmful to lips because they can attract UV rays. Avoid these shades entirely or try a triple-layer approach for added protection: first apply a lip balm with SPF, followed by a colored lipstick, then finish it off with some shine. • Cover your face, especially on windy days. Use a scarf to cover your lips when the wind starts blowing. • When indoors, consider using a humidifier in dry environments to help moisturize your skin and lips. More healthy lip tips can be found at mycarmex.com. There is no reason to suffer through chapped, cracked lips. Great habits, such as applying a moisturizing lip balm or lip balm that contains SPF, can help you keep your lips healthy and moisturized.

5 Simple Ways to Naturally Relieve Bloating (StatePoint) Bloating is not only uncomfortable, but it can be particularly inconvenient when you want to look and feel your best in the summer. While symptoms can seem unpredictable, there are simple and natural ways you can prevent and relieve both bloating and gas. • Up your fiber. You’ve probably heard that fiber is essential for your digestive system. What you may not know is that certain types of fiber called prebiotics feed the bacteria in your gut. Without enough of it, your microbial diversity can be limited, negatively impacting your ability to break down and metabolize food. Examine your diet and add whole foods rich in prebiotic fiber, or find a food-based prebiotic supplement to ensure you’re getting enough each day. • Eat mindfully. Overeating, as well as eating too quickly, causes air to get trapped in your digestive tract. Eat mindfully and slowly. It’ll help you feel fuller faster and keep your abdomen in-check. • Know yourself. Follow your gut and understand what works and what doesn’t for your body. From gluten and dairy to nuts and fried foods, and way too much sugar in just about everything made in a factory, it’s important to bring awareness to how your body handles certain ingredients. A holistic-minded, general

medical practitioner can help you identify the food sources that make your gut more likely to swell. • Consider digestive enzymes. The enzymes in your digestive system break down food so it can nourish your body. Sadly, the number of enzymes in your body decreases as you get older or more stressed out, which opens the door for gas, bloating and irregularity. Consider taking an enzyme supplement or eating more enzyme-rich foods such as raw fruits and veggies. Also, be sure to find some time to shake off daily stress. • Support your microbes. Gas and bloating are inevitable if your gut health isn’t in great shape.

Unfortunately, many aspects of modern life can deplete the beneficial bacteria we’re meant to have and create a microbial imbalance. The good news? Taking an effective probiotic supplement is one of the most powerful steps you can take toward achieving a lifestyle free of gas and bloating. you with a pre-approval letter stating how much home you can afford and the maximum amount you are qualified to borrow. Having this letter can help show the seller that you are a committed and qualified buyer. Keep in mind that the amount your lender is willing to lend is not always how much you should borrow. You should borrow only what you feel you can comfortably repay through monthly mortgage payments. Wait to take this step until you are actually on the hunt, as preapprovals are usually good for only a limited time. When determining your budget, consider the length of your loan and the type of loan you want. Do you want to pay back the money that you borrow over 15 years or 30 years? The longer your loan term, the smaller your monthly payments, but you’ll pay more interest over time. The type of mortgage loan is important, too. With a fixed-rate loan, the interest rate stays the same through the life of your

loan, as will your monthly payments. While this can offer some peace of mind, it’s important to know that such loans tend to have higher interest rates because the lender isn’t protected against a rise in its costs over the course of your loan. On an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) however, the interest rate may re-set every one, three or five years based on the movement of a specific index and the terms of the loan. Homebuyers may have low interest rates when they first take out their mortgage loans, but the rates may increase over the loan term. If your rate changes at a reset, then your monthly payment will change too. For a full rundown on all things homebuying, visit myhome.freddiemac. com. One of the most important aspects of homebuying is getting a handle on how much home you can afford. Do your research before you begin househunting, so you can be well-informed throughout the process.

(StatePoint) Shopping for a home? Before you begin your search, it’s important to figure out what you can comfortably afford. “The interesting thing about homebuying is that it isn’t a one-size-fits-all process,” says Mike Dawson, Vice President of Single-Family at Freddie Mac. “After all, it’s your budget and these are your housing needs. Doing your homework to figure out what those needs are is the critical first step.” Before you start shopping, learn how much you can borrow. Free online resources, such as Freddie Mac’s “How Much You Can Afford” calculator, found at calculators.freddiemac. com, can help you get a handle on this figure during the preliminary stages of your search. This estimate is based on income, fixed monthly payments such as auto loans and student loans, and the terms of the loan you plan to take out. You may also consider speaking to a lender at this stage. If you qualify for a loan, he or she will provide

REAL ESTATE Stylish Storage for Renters (Family Features) Just because you rent or live in small quarters doesn’t mean you can’t have ample storage space. It means you just have to be a bit more creative in figuring out where to put things, even when it seems hopeless to get a handle on organization and clutter under control. The first rule is to purge and keep only what you need or simply love. It’s a good idea to review your possessions at least every six months to filter out any items that have lost their luster or accumulated over time. Of course, you can make this chore easier by disciplining yourself to be vigilant about not bringing

unnecessary things into your living space. However, even with the most diligent effort, you’ll still have essentials and other items you can’t or won’t part with. That’s where creativity can make it easier to find ample storage space. Seek inspiration. Search online for solutions to everyday storage problems, as sites like Pinterest and Houzz can be great resources. Pinterest reports that 93 percent of its users shop the platform for new ideas and 87 percent have made purchases based on things they have seen on the site. Organizational issues, especially small or non-

existent closet space, are common and many creative solutions, such as using non-traditional means to store seasonal items like clothes outside of the bedroom, can be found online. Embrace unique ideas. Typical storage places and containers are obvious choices, but you can also maximize your usable space with functional and fashionable furniture that doubles as great storage. For example, ClosetMaid’s Storage Furniture and Bookcases are stylish options that fit virtually any decor. No matter your decorative style or size of your residence, there are plenty of options to make the most of your space so you can find a home for everything. Find more creative storage solutions at ClosetMaid.com.

On-trend design ideas for your kitchen renovation SELLING BUYING RENTALS RELOCATIONS WORKING for YOU considering YOUR desires

For most homes, there’s one room that serves as the hub of all activity. From preparing mouthwatering meals to entertaining a house full of guests to grabbing a few minutes to relax with a mug of steaming coffee, the kitchen is the place where it all happens. That’s why such careful planning is necessary when you set out to redesign this essential living space. (Family Features)

Layout: Arguably the most important decision is the overall layout of the kitchen, defining which appliances will go where and what architectural details such as windows and doors - need to be integrated into the plans. Determining how many and what kind of cabinets you need can be even more complex, and contemporary design can help open up plenty of options. In the past, cabinetry was fairly straightforward. Lower cabinets were topped with a counter, then a backsplash and a matching set of cabinets above. These days, design is far less predictable, and introducing variety through the cabinetry is a savvy designer’s trick to grab attention. The comprehensive product lines from Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. make it easy to mix diverse finishes, door styles and wood species to blend different design techniques while achieving an eclectic but cohesive feel.

Function: While the exterior of the cabinets is what you (and your guests) will

appreciate when they first enter the room, it’s what lies hidden behind doors that makes a good kitchen truly great. After spending so much time creating the perfect look, your kitchen demands the right tools and enhancements to make it functional. The trick is to look for unexpected ways to add practical performance. For example, a shallow drawer is an ideal location for kitchen knives so you can free up counter space from a bulky butcher block. A slotted wood knife drawer is the perfect solution to securely hold each of your knives and help prevent dull blades and cut fingers. If you’re stuck with an awkward space, look for creative ways to make it work for you. For example, a narrow gap could be closed with a unique pull-out cabinet, such as Wellborn Cabinet’s Base Canister Organizer Pullout Cabinet, which holds three small, one medium and three large containers. The quart containers are included with this canister organizer when ordered direct from the company. Storage: Keeping what’s inside your cabinets organized only adds to a newly redesigned kitchen’s enhanced function. One often-overlooked solution is using drawers for pots and pans. The ability to store each pot with its corresponding lid eliminates the jumbled stacks and hardto-reach pieces common in many kitchens. Extra-deep drawers, paired with drawer storage options provide sectioned, adjustable options depending upon size of pots and pans. Another option: an adjustable wood board peg system that lets you customize the peg locations to fit your pots and pans just right. Color: A more eclectic kitchen style brings plenty of character on its own, so a color palette that lets the architectural and structural details really shine is more appropriate than bold splashes of vibrant color. That said, there’s still plenty of room to create visual interest and integrate multiple hues to give the room extra depth and charm. Subtle shades of gray may be just the ticket. Gray cabinetry has grown in popularity in recent years. In fact, more than two-thirds of designers believe gray is the fastest growing color trend in cabinetry, according to data from RICKI Research. The Nature Collection from Wellborn Cabinet is one way to achieve this look. The line of gray paints and stains is available in one stain option and two paint options, allowing for nearly endless possibilities, especially when you consider integrating a standout color to make a feature like an island countertop really pop.
