UNDERSTANDING HOME HEALTH

Thank you for your great response to this column.

These are a few of some recent questions: I’m not able to manage my apartment or drive my car anymore. Will my long term care insurance cover someone to help me?

Your long term care insurance covers personal care needed at home only. That means that your policy states that it will cover a home health aide who can help the insured person shower, dress, prepare light meals, do laundry, and straighten up bathroom and kitchen after using them for the care of the patient. The aide can also shop for the insured. Aides are professionals who have been trained with a required amount of state-approved hours in a legitimate training school to provide safe and efficient care with a degree of ethics. They are aware of the services they are allowed to provide under insurance coverage. Services requested other than the aforementioned needs to be agreed upon via a private arrangement between you and your aide. As an agency, we cannot and do not get involved in these arrangements when insurance is involved.

But I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I

need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. So, what can I do?

Those are considered private services. At Always Classic Care, we can provide them for you at a reasonable out-of-pocket cost, much as you arranged before you qualified for coverage from your long term care insurance. If you explain your needs to me, I can make wonderful recommendations for you. We can provide housecleaners and drivers who provide those services for a living, but are screened as well as our aides prior to our recommending them.

Why should I go through an agency if I have to hire someone? I can use someone my neighbor uses.

You definitely can hire whomever you like. However, you should consider the following items: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? All of our recommendations have had to be subjected to an FBI investigative screening.

• Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? Are you sure?

• Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes?

We do. Many people are unaware of their responsibility

to IRS when hiring a household employee, or the aide’s legitimate status to work in this country. If you hire privately you are responsible for taxes, checking legal status and overtime pay. They are now your employee and you are legally an employer.

REMEMBER… it’s always better to book services through a professional agency. You get top people and avoid a lot of trouble.

Local Teen Becoming You-tube Sensation

Daniel Skye is a 13-year old singer living in Hollywood. He only began singing this year, was encouraged by friends, picked up an old guitar, and performed a few tunes at Aventura Hillel School before teachers and fellow students.

As others heard him, he was urged to do covers (a term in pop music that refers to previously recorded songs by a popular artist) on Instagram. He has been so well received, now with more than 330,000 followers, that he seems destined to become the next YouTube sensation.

Teens and ‘tweens love him. Adults are taken back by his talent, his good looks and his apparent drive to follow this passion.

“I want to be a successful pop singer,” says Daniel.” I would love to meet my growing fan base who motivate me every day.”

His voice is sweet and sensitive. He seems to connect with his fans, and communicates with them daily. In fact, fans have started a ‘Skye Hard Army’, creating their own clothing, posters and web post, promoting Daniel across all social media platforms.

Daniel already has been featured on Instagram’s Popular Page several times, which has increased his fan

base many-fold. A luggage company, Sprayground, discovered Daniel and teamed up with him to promote their line of back packs as their Youth Ambassador.

Sprayground has done promotions with Nickelodean, appealing to a younger market. “Right now, I am the young face of Sprayground appealing to a pop market,” he says.

“Through them, I am holding a contest for my fans. The top three winners will get a free back pack. “ Songs that Daniel sings on his website and Instagram are some of the latest pop hits by Justin Bieber (“One Less Lonely Girl”), Austin Mahone (“Say Something”), Chris Brown (“With You”) and Ed Sheeran’s “Lego House”, but the one he really comes across in is “Who Is Loving You?” by Michael Jackson.

Claire Goedde, who is a recent graduate of Aventura Waterways Elementary School says, “I found him on Instagram and really liked him. He’s talented and has a great voice.”

Umbrella insurance: Are you adequately covered?

(BPT) - If you have auto insurance, you probably think you have all the coverage you need for yourself, your spouse and your teenage drivers. Likewise, your homeowners insurance will take care of repair costs in case the pipes burst or there’s a fire. But what happens if you get sued?

If your 17-year-old son is involved in a car wreck that seriously injures a neighbor, or if a child gets hurt in the backyard swimming pool, you could face a mountain of medical and legal expenses. If those expenses exceed the coverage provided by your insurance policies, you would be responsible for covering the remaining costs.

In these situations, an umbrella policy can be a lifesaver. Umbrella insurance is a supplemental personal liability policy that provides coverage above and beyond the liability coverage provided in your homeowners and auto policies. An umbrella policy shields your existing and future assets including wages, an inheritance or other windfalls. It covers you for accidents on your property or car accidents caused by you or your dependents.

“Many people don’t understand what an umbrella policy can offer,” says Charles Valinotti, a senior vice president with insurer QBE North America. “You don’t have to be wealthy or have a great deal of assets to benefit from umbrella coverage. It can protect you and your

family from many different kinds of hazards.”

After your auto or homeowners liability coverage is exhausted, an umbrella policy is applied to cover outstanding expenses, Valinotti says. For example, if you are liable for $400,000 worth of damage and your auto insurance pays a maximum $300,000 in medical expenses per accident, the umbrella policy would pick up the remaining $100,000.

Umbrella insurance is similar to homeowners insurance, Valinotti says. If a guest winds up hospitalized after dining at your home due to your negligence and sues you for $350,000, though your homeowner’s policy only covers the first $300,000 in losses, the umbrella coverage would take care of the remaining $50,000.

Since it is a form of personal insurance, an umbrella policy will not protect you from lawsuits related to your business. It also will not cover accidents caused by highrisk activities like drag racing.

Umbrella policies typically provide from $1 million to $5 million of additional coverage. To purchase an umbrella policy, you must have insurance that provides a specific amount of maximum payout. So you may need to increase your auto or homeowners coverage to qualify for an

Dr. Charlton Adler Heel Pain From Plantar Faciitis Affects 10% Of US Population

NORTH MIAMI BEACH - The most common cause of heel pain here in the United States is a condition called plantar fasciitis. Athletes are affected, as well as soldiers, sales people on their feet over long periods of time and those who are overweight. It can affect one foot or both.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fascia is the flat band of ligament that connects our heel bones to our toes. The plantar fasciia supports the arches of our feet. If it becomes strained by walking, running or standing for long periods of time, especially on hard surfaces, it can become weak, swollen and irritated, resulting in severe heel pain.

People with flat feet or high arches are prone to this condition. Pronation (rolling of the feet inward when walking) is also a predictor of plantar fasciitis. Those with tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles are at risk for this, as well as people who are

overweight, or wear shoes that don’t fit well or are worn out.

Pain is usually felt in the heel and foot with the first step out of bed in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time. It is also likely to be felt after standing for a long period of time or when climbing stairs.

How is plantar fasciitis diagnosed?

After an indepth assessment of your medical history that would include past injuries and illnesses as well as current conditions under treatment, your podiatrist will assess how you stand and walk, where the pain is, what time of day you experience the most pain, and your level of physical activity. He or she may even xray your foot to rule out a stress fracture.

on activities that are associated with the pain. NSAIDS like Advil or other antiinflammatories such as Tylenol or Aspirin may be prescribed to reduce the painful inflammation, or ice applications may help. We may prescribe toe and calf stretches with a towel several times a day.

Shoes with a good arch support and/or cushioned soles are definitely recommended. If pain continues after these conservative approaches are employed, splints may be customized for the patient, and in extreme conditions where pain continues for more than six months, surgery may be recommended.

The key to a kitchen redesign that is both livable and lovable long after the paint dries is to choose quality, well-designed foundational elements such as premium and aesthetically pleasing kitchen appliances, countertops and flooring, and build on them.

“Pick what you love,” Berkus says.

“Pick things that really represent who you are and what your design personality is all about. Stick with them and don’t waiver.”

First, look at your kitchen and decide what elements would create the most impact through replacement or refurbishment. Maybe your kitchen appliances are white enamel and a decade old, when you prefer stainless steel and models that integrate the newest technology. Once you’ve decided which elements are the most important to you, it’s time to decide your style.

“First, look for inspiration. Pinterest is a great way to start,” Berkus advises. “Start a board of what you love and what you want in your kitchen.

You’ll see the trend of what matters most to you float to the surface. What you gravitate toward the most is where you begin.”

For example, if your board is full of new appliances, chances are your current ones need updating.
