Art evolves with new technology (BPT) - Can you imagine a museum without paintings? Technology has impacted society in countless ways but many overlook its impact on the arts. The very phrase “the arts” might evoke images of oils, watercolors or sculpture but technology is inspiring a whole new generation of artists who are using new mediums to create their masterpieces. This growing movement is commonly known as “new media” art. New media artworks, “are those created by incorporating technology into the creative process,” according to artist Mark Tribe. “They are projects that make use of emerging media technologies and are concerned with the cultural, political and aesthetic possibilities of these tools.” There are unlimited forms of new media art. A traditional painting can still be new media as long as some combination of new technologies does the painting. The most popular type of new media, however, is the creation of still and moving images using picture editing software - essentially digital drawing or manipulated photos. There are new media exhibits and venues popping up around the world including dedicated galleries such as Zhulong Gallery in Dallas and Furtherfield Gallery in London. One question looms - what’s the best way to display these new artworks? Advanced software and new techniques have allowed today’s digital artists to achieve new visual heights but these works are only as powerful as the display. Until recently, there have not been many advances in display technology, which has somewhat limited
the visual experience digital artists can create, but then new technology arrived. In late 2012, LG Electronics introduced the first Ultra HD TV in the United States. These “4K” TVs offer increased resolution - more than 8 million pixels - which means the finer details of artists’ work come to life with incredible clarity and brilliant detail. Soon after, it introduced OLED (short for organic light emitting diode) TVs, which provide increased color accuracy and an infinite contrast ratio for brighter, more vibrant images on a super-thin curved screen. This summer, LG launched “The Art of the Pixel,” challenging students at nine of the nation’s top art schools to create still and motion digital artwork for display on the next-generation video screens. Through this program, LG is providing more than $250,000 in student and university awards as well as Ultra HD and OLED TVs for use and display in the schools’ studios and galleries. Students have been submitting their art since June 1, and throughout the month of July, consumers can view and vote for their favorites by visiting www.lgusa.com/LGSupportsTheArts. “I’m inspired by all kinds of art, and particularly by the advancements in ‘new media’ art made possible by the latest technology,” says award-winning actor and modern art enthusiast Neil Patrick Harris. What’s to become of the 21st century museum? There will always be a place for oils and watercolors, but perhaps everyone will be viewing them on a whole new canvas.

No matter what team you rooted for in this year’s World Cup in Brazil, it turned out to be one of the most exciting months of soccer the world has witnessed in the history of this prestigious event. As we watched two quality teams in Germany and Argentina square off in the finals and saw the impressive outcome, there was probably no other area in south Florida that had more of a cheering interest than Aventura. Whether it was the host team Brazil, powerhouse Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Russia or the United States, the population of this community is home to more than 30 different countries, many who packed local restaurants and bars to root on their teams. While the USA was always a favorite team to cheer for, losing in the Round of 16, there was no doubt that residents of Aventura had a huge stake in the outcome of so many different matches, played for over several weeks in July.
“This was so exciting at so many levels,” said Ricky Rojas, who was born in America, but has family from Colombia and Ecuador. “No matter where you went in this community during the World Cup, the spirit was high and the games were competitive.” Perhaps the advent of social media really put the spotlight on this World Cup. Like no other event in history has the entire world been so involved via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. From Europe to the Middle East and back to this country, the fever pitch from every goal and result to players being kicked out for biting, it was all played out for the entire world to see and react. Whether it was at Colombian hotspots such as El MegaChuzo, Los Perros or Las Delicias in Sunny Isles Beach - our Brazilian hangout Area Code 55 - the passion was certainly higher than ever before as national pride was certainly the order of this year’s event. “The very fact that we had Twitter and all the social media to boast our love for this country
made this so very special,” Marcello Silva explained. “The very fact that very goal was followed by millions and millions across the world was very special. We connected with many friends and relatives back home, which was great.” Aventura resident Candace Duarte was born in Porto Alegre. She came to the United States 12 years ago, but never lost her passion for Brazilian soccer. Gathered at Buffalo Wild Wings in Aventura for the devastating 7-1 loss to Germany, she vowed that her country would be back. “I have too much love for Brazilian soccer to give up on them after losing to a great team,” she said. “We will regroup and be back stronger in four years.” Along with Duarte was Miguel Calderon, who also grew up Forteleza and attended school in Rio de Janeiro. While he was visibly upset by the outcome, he was so proud of his team and also promised things would be different when the world heads to Russia in 2018. “I am not happy,” he said, clutching his yellow and green
jersey and sipping on a cool beverage. “But I have cheered on my country since I was 8 and there is no way that one game will make me feel any different. Look around you, we are a proud country and one that will move on.” As upset as the Brazilians were, Terry Rodriguez was elated that his Costa Rican team, viewed by many as a huge longshot, made it to the quarterfinals before losing in a shootout to the Netherlands. Rodriguez watched every game his country played with plenty of pride. He knows that his team was a huge underdog and that the world had the chance to see a team that exceeded all expectations. “I grew up in San Jose and we have such a huge population here in south Florida and the Aventura area,” he said, wearing No. 10 Bryan Ruiz jersey. “We had great players like (Christian) Bolanos, (Patrick) Pemberton and (David) Myrie who never gave up. Most never heard of this team before this World Cup.” As many of the Central and
South American programs are always well represented in south Florida, Aventura has a huge German, English, French and Russian representation as well. Marco Mueller is the cousin of German soccer star Mario Gotze. He watched every game of the World Cup, including the finals and this North Miami Beach resident never took off his No. 19 jersey. In fact, he has been back to his native country several times to watch many of the individuals play. “I follow all the players on the German team on the internet,” he said. “No matter if they play in Germany, Spain or for professional English teams. I love soccer at its very finest.” Mueller remembers when USA’s head coach Jurgen Klinsmann played for the German national team and was a decent player. “I have followed soccer since I was 5,” he said. I am 53 now, so I guess I can take you back to 1974 when we won it all in Munich. Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breiner and Gerd Mueller, who played here for your Fort Lauderdale Strikers.” Love the sport or not, there was simply no way that you could get around how popular it was for residents of Aventura this year. With so many countries represented, this was indeed “ground zero” for a World Cup that will elevate the sport in so many ways.

This one is the most frequently asked question I am asked: Why should I go through an agency when I can hire my own aide and pay less per hour? Remember the age-old adage “You get what you pay for”? You may pay less for your aide hourly, but when you hire independently, do you really know what you are getting yourself into? These are just a few of the complaints that I have heard from patients who contacted us: • Things seem to disappear too often • She didn’t listen to what I wanted • She got so bossy that I felt like I was the employee • With her problems, I felt that I needed to help her with extra money • She kept coming late and leaving early • She was on her cell phone all the time • She was nervous driving to unfamiliar addresses, even to the doctor • She did not cook the way I like and would not listen to my suggestions • She didn’t buy the brands or cuts of meat that I wanted • She didn’t dress appropriately and when we went out, I was embarassed. With our agency, as with any other legitimate agency, we do not stand for any complaints, NOT ANY.

Summer in the kitchen: Summertime is a great season to begin hosting friends and families, but you don’t need to completely redecorate your home every time you have company. Prepping early, especially in the kitchen, can cut the pressure and allow you to have some fun while hosting a party this summer. “It’s not enough for your guests to show up and have fun - you have to, too!” says Berkus. “Have all items for your meal prepped in advance, so that you can take time to sit, let the meal linger and the conversation flow. Tomorrow you can sleep in.” Berkus recommends stocking up on kitchen essentials in neutral colors, so they are appropriate for any occasion. Linen placemats can work for any party; just add brighter solid napkins and you’re ready for that summer barbecue. The well-appointed kitchen: “More than any other room in the
house, the kitchen works best when it’s in order,” notes Berkus. “It should be intuitive. Having a large-capacity refrigerator with easily-adjustable shelving, like those offered in the LG Studio line, is a great way to keep track of everything you’ve got in there.” If it’s been a while since you’ve gone through your cabinets, take an afternoon to sort through your kitchen necessities while keeping flow in mind. If you have counter space, use a tray or large board to keep the utensils you use every day at arms’ reach from the stove for easy access. Berkus suggests taking advantage of a roll of butcher paper hung on the wall that can function as a place to write notes and reminders while still looking elegant. “The kitchen often becomes the crossroads of the home, a space you pass through a hundred times,” says Berkus. “To keep the piles and stacking to a minimum, I like incorporating trays or baskets on top of a rolling cart, which functions as the command center of the kitchen. It becomes the perfect place for my keys and sunglasses to land at the end of the day, as well as a place to organize mail and accessories for each member of the family.”
Technology: As our world continues to become more centered on technology, people are wondering whether or not it has a place in the kitchen. The kitchen of today not only needs to be seamlessly designed, but also needs to be wired to meet all your technology demands. Berkus recommends incorporating several places to plug in within your kitchen. “If you’ve got a family, then it can escalate to a full on war when there’s limited plugs or USB ports in the wall. Consider a plug that allows for more than one device, or a charge pad that you can toss your device on and it does the rest.” If appliances are outdated and lack the functions you need, an upgrade can help make everyday tasks easier. SUMMER-READY: Feeling good about your GI symptoms suffering from these GI symptoms struggle with feelings of frustration. “Summer is my favorite time of year, but my GI symptoms can make it challenging,” says Julie DeBois, a person living with EPI. Here are a few ideas from Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa - a gastroenterologist at NYU Medical Center/Tisch Hospital in New York City, author and television personality - for living with symptoms possibly related to GI-related conditions such as EPI. “While general tips can be very helpful, you should also speak directly with your physician about your GI symptoms and EPI,” she advises. Dr. Raj recommends: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. If plain water doesn’t satisfy you, flavor it with fresh fruit such as strawberries or mangos. After you finish the water, you have a light, healthy snack to nibble on. Decide on a dietary plan with your doctor and try to stick to it, even when it may be tempting to reach for whatever foods are most convenient. This may be especially difficult when on vacation or involved in outdoor activities, but keep in mind that proper nutrition is an important component of managing your symptoms. Plan ahead and leave the house prepared with snacks that have been approved by your doctor or nutritionist to ensure that you’re always able to keep to your diet, no matter the situation. When traveling to new places, plan
ahead for digestive emergencies. You should pack a “backup plan” bag that includes pre-moistened travel wipes, a travel pack of toilet paper, an extra pair of underwear/bathing suit, your physician’s phone number and/or email address, research on the nearest bathroom to the area you will be occupying, as well as healthy snacks and water. Relieving stress and exercising. Eightythree percent of those surveyed agree that GI symptoms may become more pronounced when a person is under stress, and a healthy, productive way to relieve stress is to exercise. Exercise not only relieves stress, but it also encourages normal contractions of your intestines. Be sure to discuss exercise regimens with your doctor before getting started to find an activity that is appropriate for you. If running or lifting weights isn’t appealing, a fun way to introduce exercise to your summer routine is to bring a soccer ball or Frisbee on your outing and work out with a friend. Most importantly... talk to your doctor. More than half of U.S. adults surveyed have not spoken to their primary care doctor about their GI discomfort because they do not feel that their symptoms warrant medical attention. (BPT) - With summer in full swing, people across the country are hitting the beaches, pools and barbeques, sipping lemonade and sporting shorts. However, for those living with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, summer may present some challenges beyond how to keep cool, like feeling anxious about where the nearest bathrooms are located. What they might not realize, though, is that they don’t have to suffer in silence. These symptoms could be caused by an under-recognized and underdiagnosed condition known as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), which is manageable with the right treatment plan prescribed by a doctor. For those with EPI, the pancreas doesn’t make or secrete enough digestive enzymes for proper digestion to take place. Symptoms associated with EPI can include diarrhea, gas, bloating, stomach pain, frequent bowel movements and unexplained weight loss. Although some of these symptoms may be fairly common, they can be very disruptive to peoples’ lives. Symptoms of EPI can vary, but if you have one or more of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor. So if you are dealing with frustration due to your GI symptoms, you are not alone. In fact, the person next to you right now may be feeling the very same way. According to a national online survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults conducted in 2013 by Harris Interactive, 73 percent of U.S. adults

Building Bonds between Dads and Kids (Family Features) For many adults, the times spent with their fathers are among their most treasured memories. However, today as many as one in three children in America live in a home where a biological father is not present. The reasons for paternal absence can vary. For example, fathers may stay distant from a child out of fear of being inadequate or failing the child. Despite difficult circumstances, in many cases there are solutions that allow fathers to maintain an important presence in their children’s lives. The following are many of the common reasons for fathers’ absences along with guidance on how to help resolve the situation, provided by Dr. Janet Taylor, an author and community psychiatrist. Guilt: Many fathers have guilt for not having the financial means to buy things for their kids. Fathers need to understand their children love them because they are their father and not because of the “things” they give
them. “A father’s time and involvement in a child’s life is a true gift,” Dr. Taylor says. “Give the gift of your time and it will mean the world to them.” Family Conflict: Disputes among family members may also keep a father away. When conflicts arise with a mother, grandparents or other family members, a child should know he or she is not the problem, Dr. Taylor cautions. Doubts about paternity can be an especially trying source of family conflict. A paternity test can help eliminate this uncertainty. sponsored by Identigene found that most Americans who are looking to address a paternity issue understand there are many benefits of having a biological father in a child’s life, including providing the child with a sense of family and self (73%), enhancing the child’s selfesteem (70%) and offering the child with a masculine parental figure (69%). According to Fatherhood.org, children who do not have a father figure in their
life are more likely to endure financial hardship, use drugs, quit school or engage in criminal behavior. “This data serves as a testament that a father’s active participation does make a difference,” Dr. Taylor says. “Hopefully it encourages those fathers who have not had a role in their child’s life to develop a bond that can truly re-shape a young person’s entire childhood.”

Treat A Skin Tear With Respect By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
As we age and lose collagen in the subdermal layers of our skin, we notice how the skin’s outer layer becomes crepelike and tears easily when brushing against a sharp edge. This was the recent case with a patient of mine, who had experienced a skin tear in a rehab just before I met her. Through lack of proper treatment at the rehab and minimal wound care ordered at home, her healing and circulation became compromised. When I became aware of her pain ten days later, and saw the state of her wound for the first time, I referred her to Dr. Charlton Adler, wound care specialist at both Aventura Hospital and the Memorial System, and accompanied her to her appointment. Dr. Adler pointed out how the edges of the skin tear had rolled under and new subdermal tissue was beginning to fill in the small cavity left by the tear and showed signs of entrapping the borders of the tear by growing over it. After anesthetizing the site, he gently began softening and restretching the rolled over skin, debrided the new dermal tissue that would have been excess, and surgically
placed the original skin flap over its natural area. He secured the flap with steristrips, covered with Tagaderm and left everything in place for a week to heal undisturbed. “It’s such a shame,” said Dr. Adler, “If the skin flap would have been placed on its site in the very beginning, the patient would not have been subjected to this pain, and it would have healed by now.” Wounds, even as superficial as a skin tear, should get professional attention when it comes to the elderly or with diabetics who heal poorly. The body’s healing capacity slows down with age and is complicated with diabetes. A simple skin tear can become infected or compromise circulation, as it did with this patient. Wounds should be cleaned and treated with an antiinfective cream or spray and covered to avoid contamination. Dressings should be changed daily unless specialty stay-in-place products are used after aseptic condiitions are employed. And if the wound does not show signs of healing in a few days, please see a wound care specialist like Dr. Adler. Early professional attention can avoid
unnecessary pain, compromised healing, and a threat to one’s health. Dr. Adler performs vascular testing right in his office. He prescribes medications and exercise to improve circulation.
