5 reasons you’ll love your next vacation (BPT) - The big skies and open spaces of the American West have captured the imagination for hundreds of years. Whether it’s the beauty of a desert sunset or the cold majesty of snow-capped mountains, there’s something about the landscape and the clean air that reinvigorates the spirit. Seeking relief from the hustle and bustle of modern life, people from all over stay at one of many dude ranches across the country. Here, an intimate blend of adventure and comfort allows visitors to experience the majesty of the west in style and unmatched luxury. Since 1926, members of The Dude Ranchers Association have served as stewards of both the land and the traditions of the

American West. Always eager to share their way of life with guests from the big city or just down the road, they have transformed the rancher’s way of life into one of the most incredible vacation opportunities around. For a taste of the variety offered, here are five reasons all kinds of people return to dude ranches across the country. 1. Roughing it has never been so luxurious. Simply put, it’s hard to find a more relaxing experience. With many ranches offering morning yoga to limber you up before you get in the saddle along with spa services to induce a state of complete relaxation, you’ll think those

cowboys had it easy on their cattle drives! 2. An educational adventure for the whole family. Many dude ranches have an array of kid-friendly activities. Children of all ages can ride horses, play, learn about animals and the wonders of the great outdoors. Parents treasure this direct, hands-on learning, and kids, well,

they hardly know that what they’re doing is educational. 3. A perfect getaway for animal lovers. There is no shortage of people who visit a dude ranch in order to live their childhood dream of having a horse or a pony. Horses are an integral part of the dude ranch experience, and whether you ride them through the mountainside meadows or

learn some grooming techniques, working with these animals is a magical experience. 4. Indulge in a meal like none other. After a day luxuriating in the crisp western air, nothing is better than sitting down with your family for a gourmet meal paired with the perfect wine. Yes, the food is a world-class combination of classic favorites and new flavors, but it’s also a chance to share stories with your loved ones, hear about the things your kids discovered and create lasting memories. 5. Discover something about yourself. Each year, there is no shortage of people who come to relax and let the stress of daily life melt away. While doing this, they also manage to participate in things they

never imagined. Whether it is zooming down a zip line, going whitewater rafting or mountain biking, many people discover new experiences that give them a new perspective on life. Founded in 1926, The Dude Ranchers’ Association was founded to preserve, protect and promote this unique vacation experience. Since then, the core principles of dude ranching remain the same: horses, hats, hospitality, heritage, honesty and heart. With more than 100 accredited members, all of which are required to uphold the highest quality and standards within the dude ranching industry, The Dude Ranchers’ Association can help you find your next dream vacation.

of the Art Deco Weekend Committee and a Miami Design Preservation League Board of Directors Member. “They worked

with the light and the breeze from the ocean and the native vegetation to create Tropical Deco. They used the elements natural to here. The reason it’s fun to sit at a café in Miami Beach is because of all these things. Art Deco Weekend celebrates the preservation of this unique architectural heritage by the Miami Design Preservation League.” The Miami Design Preservation League’s Art Deco Weekend is free and open to the public. The community cultural festival is made possible through the generous support of many corporate, government and community partners. For more information on what to do during Art Deco Weekend, as well as more information on our sponsors and community partners, please visit: Free events/activities and sponsors/partners www.artdeco weekend.com. Preserving Our History: The impetus to preserve South Beach’s Art Deco architecture began in 1976 when Barbara Baer Capitman, John Capitman and Leonard Horowitz founded the Miami Design Preservation League. At the time, many of the buildings in the district were in disrepair and in danger of destruction. The preservation of Art Deco architecture in South Beach was key to the city’s resurgence in the 1980s and ‘90s as a desirable resort destination once again. Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving, protecting, and promoting the cultural, social, economic, environmental and architectural integrity of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District and all other areas of the City of Miami Beach where historic preservation is a concern. Actress Katey Sagal discovered a surprising fact about her family history when she appeared on the “Who Do You Think You Are?” TLC TV show

Actress Katey Sagal discovered a surprising fact about her family history when she appeared on the “Who Do You Think You Are?” TV show, which features celebrities tracing their roots. Some of her distant ancestors were Amish – a bit of information that somehow failed to work its way down through the ages to her generation. Sagal’s experience uncovering such a fascinating, but previously unknown family fact isn’t that far off the mark from what others could expect to find when they start tracing their family lines, says Ceil Lucas, a sociolinguist, amateur genealogist and author of How I Got Here: A Memoir. “The past is chock-full of secrets ready to be revealed,” says Lucas, whose exploration of her own family history provided the stories she includes in her memoir, such as the tale of an ancestor who was involved in the Oklahoma Land Rush. “Each layer can be richer than the last, revealing people you never knew about and, with any luck, your family’s connections to major events in history.” She offers a few pointers to others who want to peel back the mystery and learn more about their ancestors: • Start with what you already know about your family and work back from there. Lucas began investigating her family history three decades ago, about the same time she began making notes on what would become a memoir of her childhood in Guatemala City and Rome, Italy. This expatriate upbringing left her with a sense of “I’m not from here” – “here” being the U.S., where she was

born. But her genealogical research, which revealed her first ancestors coming to the U.S. from Scotland in 1654 and England in 1679, showed her just how “from here” she is. • Take advantage of the many genealogical resources available these days. Community colleges often offer genealogy classes that can help propel you on your journey. When it comes to research or DNA testing that provides revelations about your origins, several websites are invaluable, such as ancestry.com, 23andme.com and myheritage.com. • If you plan to write a memoir, remember that the life story you’re telling will be an even richer narrative if you do your genealogical homework and include those stories of the relatives from your distant past. “Your ancestors are part of who you are,” Lucas says. “So you should weave them into your memoir and let them provide an added texture to your tale.” “Filling in the genealogical picture has thoroughly shaped how I think about myself,” Lucas says. “In a way, genealogy has given me ‘memories’ of those who came before me, even 10 generations before me. I have pictures in my mind of the places they left and pictures of where they ended up. Their stories have become mine.” About Ceil Lucas: Ceil Lucas, author of How I Got Here: A Memoir, is a sociolinguist. She holds a bachelor’s degree in French and Art History, a master’s degree in French and Italian, and a doctorate in Linguistics. She spent 40 years as a university professor and researcher. She began teaching Italian in 1973 and continues to do so. She is the editor and co-author of 22 books.

Artist/teacher is seeing perfect At 61, Elizabeth Vitale is still creating, in and out of the classroom

JANUARY 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

While many will tell you how important their eyesight is to their profession, Elizabeth Vitale is serious when she says it. The longtime school teacher at Nova High in Davie, Vitale, 61, is certainly one of those people you meet, that if she didn’t have her vision, her life would certainly be much, much different. This is a very creative person who not only teaches art, but has been that inspirational source for so many students in her years of dedication. She is also an artist, who continues to elevate her work to the next level. So, when she was told that she had cataracts back in 2010, there was certainly plenty of surprise. In her 50’s and never having any eye problems in the past, Vitale was caught off guard. “I remember my Optometrist, Dr. David Rouse telling me that I needed to have the surgery on my left eye,” she said. “I was really stunned, to say the least. I never had to wear glasses or had any vision problems at all.” Facing the unknown, but also the reality of needing her vision to be as perfect as possible in her everyday life, Vitale talked with Dr. Rouse, who suggested one of the best around. Because she never had any vision problems in her life, this was all new to her, but back seven years ago, there were very few who did Refractive Surgery and other cutting edge procedures. “From the moment I met Dr. (Stanley) Braverman and his staff, it was a no brainer,” she recalled. “Everything about having cataract surgery was new to me, so I asked a million questions and got a million answers.” That positive experience was certainly one, that this talented educator remembered over the past six years. That’s why when she was told that the right eye needed to be done, there was no hesitation. Located in the heart of South Florida, the Braverman Eye Center is centrally located to Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. They have also had patients come for cataract surgery from as far away as New York, Texas and several international destinations such as the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Israel, France and Canada. “Everyone is different, and each person reacts differently when it comes to their eyes, but I can tell you that the expe-

medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

Pictured Here With Dr. Braverman, Elizabeth Vitale is doing great and still making an impact on so many lives rience I had both times was truly unbelievable,” Vitale explained. “Things have even gotten better from the first time. From the time you are called into the office until you leave, it is how a trip to any doctor’s office should be.” On November 22, 2016, Vitale once again headed to the surgical facility to have that right eye done. A week after her surgery, which was done with a top of the line Tecnis Multifocal lens, she was 20/30 days after the surgery, and as we are now in January, she is a perfect 20/20, distance and near, without glasses! “I wear no glasses and can only tell you that the entire experience has been truly a blessing,” Vitale explained. “When you need your vision as much as I do, what has happened over the past seven years is amazing.” As the school year heads down the homestretch, Vitale is doing great and still making an impact on so many lives - and she realizes that Dr. Braverman and his staff have so much to do with that. What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural

lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses,

Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring. Always Classic Care has offices in three counties and is prepared to meet all your care needs. Feel free to check them out at www.AlwaysClassicCare.com, or call for more detailed information at 305-403-2622. Lic Dade 302-11301 • Lic Broward 302-11508

HOLA AVENTURA

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center Is The Place To Be In January By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest

JANUARY 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 18

As we all watched the holiday season pass by so quickly, it left all of us with a sense of wanting more this winter. Well, we are all mighty lucky that there is the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The facility, which opened in 2010, is an impressive, high-tech, 330 seat facility that has enhanced the quality of life for the entire region by providing a variety of performing arts and relevant cultural programming for audiences of all ages. Managed by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (PACA), it continues to bring an extraordinary new world of cultural opportunities to the City and surrounding areas. With its many performances that range from jazz to tributes of the stars of the past, this facility is indeed home to some of the top names and that’s why tickets often disappear within moments of sale. For Aventura residents Colleen Martinez and Nelda Morales, the best part of living in Aventura is the culture that is less than a mile from their doorstep. The opportunity to see some of the top names in entertainment is indeed something that not everyone has the opportunity to experience. “This is an unbelievable chance to see outstanding productions week after week,” Morales said. “Come on, we saw Elvis a few months back and have tickets for the Miami International Piano series as well.” Having the performances take place in Aventura is another positive. Bringing in visitors from throughout Florida and the rest of the country only enhances the exposure of the City - and in the end, the Mall, restaurants and other businesses will benefit in a big way. Even Gulfstream Racing & Casino has been a big winner in having a facility like this. Before and after events make it a perfect time to take in some casinos and thoroughbred racing. The Gulfstream property bumps

Aventura to the south, so in many ways, it is indeed part of the landscape. “When we go to performances, we plan to have dinner early and then head over the ‘theatre’,” Martinez said. “We live in such a great community - one that everyone around South Florida and the world admires - so why not take advantage of everything.” No matter what you have going on throughout January, it will be tough to top what’s going on at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Here are some of the events for January: Jan 13 - 6:30 p.m. Black String Jazz Academy Miami (JAM) Jazz Academy Miami (JAM) presents the U.S. debut of BLACK STRING. Rooted in rich, folkloric traditions of Korea, as well as in modern Jazz, this exciting quartet creates a unique language that is traditional yet unpredictable, composed yet intuitive. As a truly borderless, contemporary ensemble, BLACK STRING offers an experience that broadens the appreciation for world music by presenting an ancient tradition within a modern setting. “This is music fully of the 21st century, in all its global, postmodernist glory.”— The Washington Post. A one hour, pre-show panel discussion and Q&A on cultural topics with artists and community leaders pertaining to the “EAST MEETS WEST” theme will begin at 6:30 with the performance beginning at 8PM. Jan. 14 - 8:00 p.m. My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish, & I’m In Therapy Now, one of the longest running one-man comedy shows in history, We’ll meet: Uncle Willie, Stuttering Cousin Bob, Demented Cousin Kenny, Steve’s new therapist Cousin Sal (and Sal’s parole officer) and a myriad

of astounding characters we know, love and tolerate from our own families; each one brought to life on stage by Steve using his gift for creating voices dialects & wacky sound effects that only add to the hilarity of each story. Variety says “Steve is Alan King, Billy Crystal, a smidgen of Don Rickles and George Carlin all thrown in,” while WOR Radio calls the show “an hour and a half of laughter, hysterically funny!” This is a “don’t miss” evening of hilarious comedy at its very best. Spend an evening with Steve in his quest to defend himself against those people whose sole purpose in life is to add chaos to his. Jan 20 - 8:00 p.m. Side by Side: A Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme Tribute This energetic tribute to the “King & Queen of the Nightclub World” is filled with some of the most recognizable songs of the 20th Century. You’ll enjoy highlights from Steve & Eydie’s most popular tunes & best arrangements while taking in little known facts and stories about the duo. Peppered with witty banter & funny personal stories from Cordone & Kilgore, hits include Blame It on the Bossa Nova, Besame Mucho & Sentimental Journey. Jan. 21 - 8 p.m. Bobby Slayton The Pitbull of Comedy Bobby Slayton, often referred to as “The Pitbull of Comedy,” has been performing his own intense style of stand-up comedy for over 30 years, becoming one of the best known, respected, and energetic comics working today. You may recognize Bobby Slayton from his scene-stealing roles in movies such as “Get Shorty,” “Ed Wood,” “Bandits” and, most recently, “Dreamgirls.” He’s been seen on dozens of television shows including “The Tonight Show”

and “Politically Incorrect.” Bobby’s many appearances on HBO have included “Comic Relief” and his own stand-up special. He was a series regular on the HBO series “Mind of a Married Man,” and played Joey Bishop opposite Ray Liotta and Joe Mantegna in the critically acclaimed film “The Rat Pack.” Slayton’s distinctive gravelly voice has often been heard on animated shows like “Dr. Katz” and “Family Guy,” as well as many popular radio shows across the country including Howard Stern, Kevin & Bean, and Tom Leykis. This event contains adult language or content. Jan. 23 - 8 p.m. Celebrating Antonio Carlos Jobim! The Miami Jazz Cooperative (MJC), a nonprofit organization with a six-year track record of excellence presenting the Jazz in the Gables and Jazz at Jackson concert series, is presenting a world-class Celebration of the 90th Birthday of Brazilian Composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, arguably the greatest international contributor to the Great American Songbook. Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Stan Getz are three of the many artists who devoted entire albums to Jobim’s music. Now, an international cast of jazz luminaries and Grammy Award winning artists, will come together to celebrate Jobim’s music: Brenda Alford, Wendy Pedersen, Antonio Adolfo, Dr. Carlomagno Araya, Dr. Ed Calle, Jim Gasior, Brian Lynch, Rose Max, Hendrik Meurkins, Ramatis Moraes, Dr. Jamie Ousley, Claudio Spiewak. The final cast of musicians is subject to change without notice. Jan. 25 - 8p.m.

Sierra Boggess The original Ariel in Broadway Production of “The Little Mermaid” and Christine Daae in “The Phantom of the Opera” Sings Broadway Classics Sierra Boggess made her Broadway debut in 2007 by originating the role of Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. After a two-year run, she took the starring role as Christine Daae in Love Never Dies, the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, followed by a role in the Broadway revival of Master Class. In 2013, Boggess returned as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera for Broadway production’s 25th anniversary. Boggess is currently performing the role of school principle, Rosalie Mullins in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical adaptation of School of Rock, but she is leaving later this year to resume playing her role as Christine Daae in the Paris production of The Phantom of the Opera for the show’s 30th anniversary. HOROSCOPES Aquarius: After a very social, busy December, you will welcome the quiet softness of January. You won’t have to be ready to move at the speed of light as you return to work after the holiday, for Mercury will be still retrograde until the end of January, giving you time to collect your thoughts and assemble your agenda. Pisces: The confetti has settled, the music has stopped, and everyone is heading back to work – except you. You seem to have worked extra hard in December, so the universe is planning a special January, filled with fun, friends, and lots of fresh starts. This promises to be a very productive month for you. Aries: After the hustle and bustle of December, you’ll appreciate the slow and gentle start that January will offer you. Like tiny white snowflakes falling on a freshly fallen snow, or sunshine glistening on a quiet, pink sand beach, setting up dazzling sparkles, as if the beach were sprinkled with tiny diamonds, the silence of your environment may be beautiful, as well as soothing and rejuvenating. Taurus: The stars are twinkling for you, dear Taurus. January is a good month for you, and thankfully, after a busy, mainly financially oriented December, you will get a chance to broaden your mind though travel, education, or work you are preparing for the media. The new moon that arrived just days prior to the New Year, last month on December 29, will still be exerting lots of energy.

Leo: Work and money will be the two dominant themes of the month for you, but creativity, fitness, love, and commitment could well have a role in your January too. When you go back to work, everyone was a little dizzy or tilted over to one side, because they were a little tired from the holidays. This will be a tremendous year for you - if you play by the rules. Virgo: You are one of the most productive of all signs, but because you’re that way, you often find it hard to relax and let go. Usually when the holidays come by, it takes you a long time to take your mind off work and get into the swing of things, and that by time you do, the holiday season is over, and it is time to start focusing again. Libra: You seem to have been focused on your home for some time, but may have taken a break during the year-end holidays. Things started up again with full force at the new moon of late last month, December 29. That new moon was in Capricorn 8 degrees, lighting your fourth house of home and family. January is where your true heart lies. Scorpio: You will love January. You have lots of opportunities to travel, and with a packed fifth house of true love, you will enjoy romance too – and that is true even if you’ve not been dating. This should be a happy month for you, dear Scorpio, for so many reasons. Be optimistic – finally a month that will have few demands and plenty of pleasures.

Gemini: The start of January will find you thinking about a partner who may have given you pause in recent months. You have Saturn in the house of marriage, a part of your chart that also rules business collaborations and partnerships of all kinds. The recent weeks have been a learning experience, and have put things into perspective.

Sagittarius: As you began January, you were determined to get your finances in order. You may be preparing your receipts to show your bookkeeper or accountant so that she can prepare your taxes and close your ledgers for 2016. Some signs enjoy doing this kind of financial analysis, but you are not one of them – you enjoy making money, but not tracking it.

Cancer: The start of January found you thinking about escaping town and finding a beautiful setting to refresh, reboot, and most importantly, to inspire you. The place to go is clear: with Mars, Venus, and Neptune in your travel house, each touring Pisces, you would love to be in a sumptuous setting that is on the water, such as a stunning warm beach on a paradise island.

Capricorn: It’s birthday time, and although you often wave off questions about how you will spend your birthday, this year you may actually be thinking of letting go and planning special fun for your big day. Capricorns tend to live their life backward with heavy responsibility early in life, and as they get older, Capricorns move into a more carefree, young lifestyle.

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish. HEALTH

When it’s not just the flu: Kids with Type 1 diabetes often misdiagnosed due to the rapid onset of common symptoms - It is a common scenario: your child is nauseous, vomiting and very tired. It could be the flu, and that’s probably all it is. But it could also be Type 1 diabetes, a condition where the body does not produce a hormone, insulin, which it needs to get energy from food. Unfortunately, Type 1 diabetes is often not considered until your child is severely ill. Such was the case for Samantha Willner. Willner, now 26, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was only 18 months old. Her doctors diagnosed her illness after multiple hospitalizations and several misdiagnoses of the flu. “I was very thirsty, urinating all the time and losing weight,” Willner says. “My mom was told it was the flu, but I kept getting worse. She brought me back to the doctor and insisted they re-evaluate me. It took three different visits over a week and a half to discover that I had Type 1 diabetes. My blood sugar was almost 700. It was a miracle I survived as many (BPT)

children die in this situation.” About one in every 600 children in the United States develops Type 1 diabetes. While the disease accounts for only about 10 percent of diabetes cases in the country, it’s one of the most common chronic diseases in children. While Willner’s experience was traumatic, it’s not out of the ordinary. Thus, there are non-profit organizations, such as Beyond Type 1 who make it their mission to drive awareness around this life threatening condition. Too often, children with Type 1 diabetes end up in the emergency room with soaring blood sugar levels. This serious condition is called diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA. It occurs when the cells of a person with diabetes do not receive the glucose they need for energy, and start to burn fat and muscle instead. When this happens, leftover molecules called ketones are produced, and ketones begin to poison the body. This, in combination with extreme dehydration,

can lead to diabetic coma, or even death, if not caught and treated in time. DKA can cause emotional burden on caregivers and family members, as well as a financial burden on the family and healthcare system. And it’s all too common: based on a recent survey performed by the T1D Exchange, 41 percent of people with diabetes were in DKA when they were diagnosed. The good news, however, is that DKA is completely preventable. A simple urine test or finger prick are used to diagnose the condition. That’s why Willner is dedicated to raising awareness about Type 1 diabetes and DKA. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes that most often go undetected can come on quickly, and should be brought to a doctor’s attention as soon as possible. Early symptoms may include increased thirst or a very dry mouth; frequent urination; extreme hunger; and unintended weight loss. Furthermore, a child may be in DKA and should go immediately to the emergency room if he or she is experiencing: • Nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain

• Difficulty breathing • Fruity odor on breath • Extreme fatigue • Dry or flushed skin • Difficulty paying attention, or confusion “I have heard, too many times, about the death of a child who was sent home by medical professionals after being diagnosed with the stomach flu or a virus,” says Tom Karlya, author of the Diabetes Dad Blog. “I have held parents who were crying uncontrollably because their child’s T1D diagnosis was missed, costing their life. Many more end up in hospitals in full blown DKA. It’s not a matter of who is at fault, it is a matter of society joining together to make sure it does not happen again. In just about every case, the result could and should have been avoided.” Like Karlya and many other passionate members of the diabetes community, Willner wants parents to trust their instincts, talk openly with their health care providers and maintain a positive outlook. “I’m so grateful that my mom pushed to find the right diagnosis - she saved my life. If you’re a parent with a child who has diabetes, please know there is no reason he or she can’t live a normal, wonderful, fulfilling life.”

3 ways schools are redefining mealtime (BPT) - What’s the most important part of a child’s school day? Is it math? Reading? History? How about lunch? Research shows that children who eat breakfast

and lunch are more attentive, have a better attendance rate and ultimately do better in school. But getting children to partake in school meal programs is a challenge on its own, and with changes in government regulations, schools, working together with food companies, find themselves working to meet a new set of principles. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 changed regulations around what could and could not be offered for school lunch. Grains are now required to be at least 50 percent whole grain, sodium levels must be reduced, and cafeterias are required to offer an increased number of fruit and vegetable options. All of this supports a healthier lifestyle, but it leaves schools and food companies with a new challenge getting kids to eat what is offered.

JANUARY 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 22

To comply with new federal guidelines and still create meals that students enjoy, schools across the country are employing solutions like the following:

Dr. Ron Schlossberg, Psy.D. Licensed Psychologist 1250 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Suite 905 - Hallandale Beach, FL 33009

• Starting right. Schools understand the importance of healthy breakfast to jump-start learning. Some schools are using to-go items with protein-packed ingredients like Cargill’s Sunny Fresh individually packaged egg and cheese whole-grain wraps. These portable meals are offered to kids as they walk off the bus. For many students, this is their first meal of the day. Secondary schools are finding success appealing to older students by offering new omelet stations to encourage students to

eat a healthy breakfast. • Lowering the sodium. As part of the 2010 act, schools are looking for ways to lower sodium in their menu offerings and still provide meals kids enjoy. For example, many schools are incorporating a new line of turkey deli meats that are lower in sodium, taste great and are grown on family farms without growthpromoting antibiotics and verified by the USDA. This small change ensures a popular cafeteria staple remains on the menu for students in the future, delivering the nutrition they need. • Increased transparency. More focus is being placed on the origins of school lunch ingredients. Because of that, schools and food companies are working to increase transparency for students, parents and community members alike. “We work with schools to share information about the farmers who provide the foods used in school lunches so people get to know the story behind the food they eat,” said Suzanne McCarty, business development director for Cargill Foodservice. “We know kids and parents increasingly want to understand the journey of their food from farm to fork.” Going forward: “It is important to partner with food companies as we work to meet the demands of feeding our students,” says Joanne Kinsey, director of school nutrition services for Chesapeake Public Schools. “We all share in the same mission of providing our students quality, nutritious food that tastes good.” To learn more about how schools and food companies are working to improve school lunches, contact your local school or visit cargill.com/products/foodservice.

REAL ESTATE Simply sleek: How to create today’s top shower design (BPT) - Love the look of sleek, elegant shower spaces featured in popular home-improvement magazines and TV shows? You don’t need to be a design expert to update your favorite bathroom with touches of modern luxury and influences of European simplicity. To create a fashionable, functional and fabulous shower, follow these three rules.

Rule 1: Create clean lines A design aesthetic that embraces clean lines is at the heart of sleek shower designs. Skip complicated patterns and ornate details in favor of polished designs that produce a beautiful, finished look. In shower spaces, consider the surround and flooring transition. Explore joint systems and find one that is seamless and lowmaintenance. Consider flat walls rather than traditional curved varieties. Be aware of the visual impact a shower has when viewed both internally and externally. Clean lines, simple transitions and smart design are keys to creating a timeless sleek shower that you’ll enjoy for years to come. Rule 2: Think beyond tile More homeowners are looking for tile alternatives to create sleek

while providing homeowners with an equally beautiful space.

shower designs, and Kohler’s Choreograph collection is a popular solution. The collection features Serica material, a proprietary composite material that precisely combines crushed stone and fiber reinforcement to create unparalleled durability and beauty. The Serica walls are available in a variety of decorative options - from simple solid colors to fresh textures, as well as stone-like decorative natural options - all with a matte finish to provide a honed look and textured element. Optional accent panels add visual emphasis or contrast to the overall shower design. Additionally, the walls can be trimmed in-field to allow installers to cut to the exact dimension of the shower space. Installation is much simpler than with tile, meaning the job can be completed in less time

Rule 3: Use functional design Today’s shower spaces are too often cluttered, which isn’t just uncomfortable - it’s also unsafe. A sleek shower space is enhanced by thoughtful details that make it easy to stay organized. Start by thinking through your daily routines to help shape the vision of an ultra-functional bathroom space. Keep in mind, sleek design doesn’t necessarily mean minimalist design. The right storage solutions and built-in features will adapt to your routine without overwhelming the space. The Choreograph collection is ideal for creating a sleek, functional space. The collection includes a variety of decorative walls, a joint system, in-wall storage, on-wall storage and seating in different styles, colors and finishes to create traditional, transitional and contemporary spaces that fit both the functionality and aesthetic needs of homeowners. Sleek shower designs may be hot, but experts predict this is one trend that is here to stay. By following these three guidelines, you’ll create a stunning shower space you’ll enjoy every day.
