8 Steps That Can Lead You To A More Fulfilling Life There’s a reason people love the start of a New Year – or the first day of spring, or maybe the first day of school. The idea of a clean slate – of making changes or starting over fresh – can be exhilarating. “It isn’t necessarily that you don’t like the life you live,” says John C. Neyland, author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream (www.johnneyland.com). “It’s just that you suspect there’s something you’re missing – something more fulfilling.” The truth is, those possibilities are always within your reach, Neyland says. “But to have the life you want means you have to change course.” Here are some ways to make that turn in your life, using what Neyland refers to as “pivots”: • Put fear in its place and understand it. Fear has no power unless you lend it power. It doesn’t change the end result, and often it causes more damage than whatever it was you were so worried about. Neyland suggests you think about the biggest fear you’ve ever had. What was

the outcome and did you recover? Chances are you came out the other end just fine. • Courage is not the lack of fear but going forward in the face of it. Courage is like exercise: The more you use it, the easier it becomes – and the more you benefit. We are taught to avoid pain and danger. You have to choose to face life with courage – but in the end, it’s how you handle fear and how you respond to it that can change your course. • Compromise is a dirty word. It can steal your life and dreams. To work for or spend time with someone who doesn’t share your values is a compromise, Neyland says, and compromise robs your energy and affects your momentum. • There is great value in having mentors. It’s less painful and more efficient to learn from the mistakes and successes of others: a family member, teacher or business leader you admire. Learn from them and emulate them in your everyday life. • Dream without restraint. Thinking about what you want to do only in the context of what you know you can do is more of a nightmare than a dream. Pursue

your goals with all you have. Don’t be concerned with failing. “The journey and the struggle can be extremely satisfying,” Neyland says. “It rivals the attainment of a goal. • Be honest with yourself. Many people lie to themselves about whom or what is most important to them. Lying sets off a chain reaction that stalls momentum and makes your life a little less than what it should be. Even small lies chip away at the person you want to be. • Be impatiently focused. We have a limited number of breaths to build the world around us. Focus on a goal and don’t wait for the right moment or perfect conditions to go for it. Time matters. • Control what you can control and forget about the rest. Every moment you spend lamenting a situation you couldn’t control, you’re stealing from yourself. Direct your energy and momentum to something you can manage instead. Before you start over, spend some time

revisiting what matters most to you, Neyland says. What are your values? What are your likes and dislikes? What do you want to do with your life? “Make a list of all these things,” he says. “Then dream boldly and take action.” About John C. Neyland John C. Neyland, president and Investment Advisor Representative at JCN Financial & Tax Planning Group, is the author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream (www.Johnneyland.com), which is part memoir and part blueprint for readers who want to get more out of life and leave a positive mark on the world.

A truly eye-opening experience for patient Deborah Pennington

FEBRUARY 2017 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

For much of her life, Deborah Pennington was resigned to the fact that her eye sight would really never improve. Wearing “thick” glasses since the third grade, this 62-year-old Fort Lauderdale hospice nurse, really never knew anything more than blurry vision in one eye and average vision at best in the other. Spending much of her life on dosages of steroids for an arthritic condition, which had taken a toll on the eyes, it had been a challenge at times, but she learned to live with what she had and prayed for the best. “When you can’t even see the LARGE E on the eye test chart, you know that things are not great,” Pennington recalled. “It was something that I had learned to live with.” Through the years, Pennington would get used to her vision problems, compensating for what she could not see. But with her nightly paperwork, travel schedule and the use of steroids, her problems started to worsen when she developed cataracts. The onset of the cataracts was accelerated by the steroids. As her condition worsened and the need to address cataracts in both eyes, Pennington was looking for someone who could at least take care of her condition before things really got to a point where she couldn’t see at all. When asking around what doctor would be best to treat her condition, Pennington had to look no further than her own office and Dr. Roger Nydick. After all, it was Dr. Nydick who had cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants done not too long ago. “As soon as I mentioned what I needed done, Dr. Nydick immediately told me about the Braverman Eye Center and Dr. Stanley Braverman, who performed his own cataract procedure,” Pennington explained. “He told me that Dr. Braverman was amazing and the surgery

that he chose to correct his cataracts and severe farsightedness, which required Tecnis Multifocal Lenses, was a major success.” Because the popularity of Dr. Braverman and the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach, Pennington admitted that she expected to walk into an assembly line and not have that personal attention that every patient, especially those with an eye condition, love to have. She was surprised! “I cannot say enough about the entire process; from the office staff to the way Dr. Braverman went over the entire procedure with me in our initial visit,” Pennington explained. “Because I had this poor vision for so long and never expected to see perfectly, the only thing I was concerned with was that my good eye would not worsen.” With so many patients going to see Dr. Braverman and coming away with such outstanding results, Pennington was just hoping that her results would be positive and maintain the vision she had. But it got better. Much better! After having surgery in the first eye and noticing a dramatic change this past September, Pennington was simply blown away by the entire experience. Then, in October, when she went back to get her “bad” eye done, it was like her life had been given back to her. “From the first time I met Dr. Braverman and the staff, it was evident that my perception about a large office assembly line was way off base,” Pennington said. “Everyone had time for me - and was there every step of the way to answer and comfort.” And, after the second eye was done, she couldn’t believe what she was actually seeing. For the first time in a long time, she didn’t have to rely on her husband to drive her around at night, and things she never knew were there before, we’ll, let’s just say, miracles do happen.

“In the days after my second procedure, something happened that I never thought would occur,” Pennington explained. “I saw images as clearly as anything I had ever seen before. It was amazing that my eyesight was better than it had ever been. I can honestly say that it was a miracle.” What Are Cataracts? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of

“As soon as I mentioned what I needed done, Dr. Roger Nydick immediately told me about the Braverman Eye Center and Dr. Stanley Braverman, right, who performed his own cataract procedure. He told me that Dr. Braverman was amazing and the surgery that he chose to correct his cataracts and severe farsightedness, which required Tecnis Multifocal Lenses, was a major success.” DEBORAH PENNINGTON the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser compliments your doctor’s skills with today’s latest technology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be.

There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than with a standard basic lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, new upgraded premium lens designs, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, and Dr. Braverman’s newly trademarked LACE™ procedure. The LACE™ procedure, if you are deemed a candidate, can nearly always guarantee that the patient will need no glasses for distance vision, and no glasses for distance or near vision if a multifocal lens implant is used. At the Braverman Eye Center, we are proud to offer the advanced AMO CATALYS® Precision Laser System, for unsurpassed

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands. At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things. Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned. When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida. What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed! Although I had resisted going through

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match. Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry. Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring. Always Classic Care has offices in three counties and is prepared to meet all your care needs. Culture is alive in Aventura City to host 2nd Annual Arts, Crafts, and All That Jazz Festival By Larry Blustein - Aventura Digest

For years, the City of Aventura had been home to one of the most prestigious arts and craft festivals in South Florida, but things changed and the event was no longer held. With a huge need to attract more and more people to the City, and a growing cultural hotspot taking hold, last year, the City of Aventura brought back an arts and crafts event that was also geared to music and attracting an audience that not only loved arts and crafts, but wanted to make this more of an event. As the event now heads toward its second year, this Arts, Crafts, and All That Jazz festival will feature live entertainment by the Nicole Yarling Quartet, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra and the University of Miami Frost School of Music Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, March 11 at Founders Park from noon to 5 PM. Admission is free. “We came last year, Jennifer Frost said. “When we left, we felt that if they added a few things along the way, it could really become a huge event.” With that in mind, things started to take shape and this event began to move forward. Aventura is a community rich in culture and creativity, and this festival aims to showcase what makes this City a “City of Excellence.” Arts and crafts including paintings, quilts, sculpture, photography, and jewelry by local artists will be on dis-

play and for sale. “This is the time of year when being outdoors and enjoying some of the culture and talent that all of South Florida has is outstanding,” Frost said. “Great weather, a lot of people down here on vacation and something new to do. Everyone knows that if you live down here, you are spoiled by great weather and the chance to do something every weekend of the year.” Tapping into that talent is what has made so many MiamiDade and Broward arts & crafts festivals successful. While these events are happening now, by adding music, food and additional attractions, will end up bringing in more and more visitors - as well as residents. Part of bringing in more and more people, is having things such as food trucks and the Aventura Green Market, which will be selling goods and refreshments. “If you have people that are not just interested in arts and crafts, you have to bring something else into the mix - to have that total experience,” Aventura resident Marla Cowan said. “My husband and I love the outdoors, enjoy staying in the community, but because we have hectic schedules, our off time has to be something that we both enjoy.” While the adults will have many things to keep them busy, small children will enjoy creating their own art with chalk, jewelry, foam, crafts, and sand at the

children’s outdoor art studio. In addition, the show highlights the Young Artists Showcase, a special exhibit designed to give young talent an opportunity to present and sell their work. The University of Miami Frost School of Music will provide performances throughout the duration of the festival by a variety of their highly acclaimed musicians including the Nicole Yarling Quartet, the Stamps Jazz Quintet, the Frost School of Music Jazz Sextet, and the South Florida Jazz Orchestra. Nicole Yarling Defies Description her myriad of personal influences have created a product that begs attention across the board. Her chosen instruments are voice, violin and fiddle (in that order). Nicole has a rich velvet voice with technical skill and personality to boot! She is a rising star in the jazz community who, like many others, has been at it for years. Born and raised in and around Brooklyn, New York, a musical household laid groundwork for Nicole’s career. She was inspired very early by her father, who plays jazz organ and piano, and her father’s records, which all made an impact on Nicole’s musical tastes: Artists such as Etta Jones, Miles Davis, Stuff Smith, J.J. Johnson, and Sonny Rollins, to the Beatles and Motown classics were in regular rotation. As early as age nine, Nicole would jam on the violin with her father. It was then that

she caught the bug to perform for a living. Aside from the familial influences, Nicole’s education is extensive, ranging from a B.A. in Music from Baruch College, to a Masters in Music Education at Columbia University. as well as private training in composition, arranging, voice and violin. She uses her various music skills today to conduct master classes and give vocal lessons. Nicole’s musical excursions have brought about stints with Dizzy Gillespie, and three years on tour as a featured soloist with Jimmy Buffet. She also participated on Buffet’s platinumselling CD, Fruit Cakes, and then went on to do eight worldwide tours with her own project, Little Nicky and the Slicks. Nicole’s notable talent has a virtue all its own, but it would be remiss not to mention the late great vocal legend Joe Williams.

Joe “discovered” Nicole through a series of events and adopted her as his very own project. He recognized this diamond in the rough, gleaming through, and began to invest in seeing Nicole rise to the top. Joe Williams Presents Nicole Yarling at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild was born as a result. Please be advised that alcoholic beverages and pets are not permitted at the park. Founders Park is located at 3105 NE 190 Street, and parking will be available at the City of Aventura Government Center parking garage (located just west of Founders Park) as well as at the Harbour Centre located on the corner of NE 188 Street and NE 29 Avenue. Complimentary shuttle service will run to and from the Harbour Centre and Founders Park from noon through 5:30 PM.

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Dr. Charlton Adler is certified by three prestigious Boards: the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and he is a Certified Wound Care Specialist. His main office is located at 1380 NE Miami Gardens Drive, Suite 235 North Miami Beach, FL 33179. Staff is bilingual Spanish. For additional information, feel free to view his website at www.miamifootankle.com, or call for an appointment at 305-935-3999.

HEALTH

4 things you can do today to support your heart health (BPT) - On the path to good health, it pays to follow your heart - literally. A healthy heart is essential to supporting good overall health, yet many people ignore the warning signs that their heart is not as healthy as it could be. A 2016 survey from the American Academy of Family Physicians, conducted by Harris Poll, found that nearly three in 10 men and women reported they had been diagnosed with high blood pressure. This result mirrors the findings of research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The findings translate to an estimated 75 million people with high blood pressure, and just slightly more than half have the condition under control. “This finding is concerning because we know that high blood pressure and heart attacks or chronic heart failure are so closely related,” said John Meigs, Jr., MD, president of the AAFP. “According to the CDC, seven out of 10 people who have a first heart attack have high blood pressure. Seven out of 10 people who develop chronic heart failure have high blood pressure. So it’s important that people know what their blood pressure is.”

To lower your blood pressure and improve your heart health, the American Academy of Family Physicians offers these recommendations. • Be deliberate with your diet. Fruits and vegetables are essential, but pay special attention to their color too. Vegetables and fruits of different colors offer different nutrients, so mix them up. At the same time, avoid heavily processed foods and those high in sodium. You should also make sure you’re drinking plenty of water rather than soda or energy drinks. Aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses every single day. • Balance your BMI. If you don’t know your BMI, a quick Internet search can lead you to several easy-to-use BMI calculators. And once you do know your BMI, you can start taking steps to reduce it, if necessary. According to the American Heart Association, losing just 5-10 percent of your body weight can dramatically reduce your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. And that leads us to ... • Jump start your heart with aerobic exercise. Your heart is a muscle, and like other muscles

in your body, exercise strengthens it. So put your heart through a workout with activities like walking, biking or hiking to increase your heart rate. Exercise can also lower your risk of developing plaque in your arteries, allowing your heart to be more efficient in delivering blood and nutrients to other parts of your body. • Stop the stress. Aside from a poor diet, there may be no larger culprit for high blood pressure

(BPT) - With the increasing number of products in the marketplace containing probiotics, many new parents might be wondering if their babies could benefit from probiotics. To answer that question, it is important to understand the role of the body’s microbiota, the living organisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Humans have trillions of bacteria - good, bad, and neutral - living in their gastrointestinal systems. Research shows that in the same way harmful bacteria in the gastrointestinal system can attack the body, good bacteria, also known as probiotics, can help support it. This relationship leads to a balanced and wellfunctioning gastrointestinal system. For babies, ingesting probiotics may help support the developing digestive tract and immune system. Breastfed babies naturally get probiotics, as research has demonstrated that breastmilk contains probiotics. Mothers unable to breastfeed, or those who choose to

lower your risk factors. offer formula, still have options to ensure their baby is building up adequate amounts of this good bacteria by feeding their baby an infant formula with probiotics. Gerber® Good Start® infant formula is the only formula line with probiotics available in all milk-based powders. While there are thousands of different probiotic strains, Gerber selected probiotics based on the available research and benefit for specific infant needs. For example, Gerber® Good Start® Gentle formula is a routine formula for healthy-term infants that uses Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) because this probiotic has been shown to help support a healthy immune system and is similar to probiotics naturally found in breastmilk. Gerber® Good Start® Soothe formula is for babies experiencing colic, excessive crying and fussiness, so it features the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri). Studies using this probiotic have shown that it reduces the amount of time colicky infants may cry. Both L. reuteri and B. lactis are recognized as safe for use in infant formula by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Keep in mind, all infant formulas are carefully regulated by the FDA. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life offers the ideal nutrition for babies, but whatever leads parents to use infant formula, they now have an option that contains important good bacteria similar to those found in breastmilk.
