Drawbacks Of Hiring Your Own Aide

This one is the most frequently asked questions I am asked: Why should I go through an agency when I can hire my own aide and pay less per hour?

Remember the age-old adage “You get what you pay for”? You may pay less for your aide hourly, but when you hire independently, do you really know what you are getting yourself into?

These are just a few of the complaints that I have heard from patients who contacted us: • Things seem to disappear too often • She didn’t listen to what I wanted • She got so bossy that I felt like I was the employee • With her problems, I felt that I needed to help her with extra money • She kept coming late and leaving early • She was on her cell phone all the time • She was nervous driving to unfamiliar addresses, even to the doctor • She did not cook the way I like and would not listen to my suggestions • She didn’t buy the brands or cuts of meat that I wanted • She didn’t dress appropriately and when we went out, I was embarassed.

Many people are unaware of their responsibility to the IRS when hiring a household employee, or of the aide’s legitimate status to work in the US. Our aides are our employees and we report their earnings and our share to the IRS. Protect yourself by preventing problems. An agency is your safest way to go. Even the home health aides know that, and although they accept statewide standard rates that may be lower than what they could get from the client privately, reputable aides know that by working through reputable agencies, they also are protected and can be steadily employed with respect.

CITY NEWS Grand Opening of Greater Jewish Enrichment Center In Hallandale Beach A new Jewish Enrichment Center/ Adult day care is opening on Hallandale Beach Blvd. We would like for the community to know about this new innovative facility.

As the name cites, the center is dedicated to the seniors of the Jewish Community.

The mission of the Jewish Enrichment Center is to provide a warm and nurturing beautiful facility catered for Jewish Seniors where they may come for the day to socialize and at the same time receive health care support.

Are all formulas created equal?

(BPT) - New parents have plenty of concerns when it comes to raising a newborn, and pediatricians have heard them all. While some questions are unusual - “When can I feed my baby fast food?” or “Is it OK for my newborn baby to go kite surfing on my back?” - the most common ones are about the most basic of necessities: food.

Almost all pediatricians (97 percent) say feeding is one of the top three categories of topics that new moms ask about. More than half of pediatricians (52 percent) agree that feeding is the No. 1 category new moms and dads ask about, according to a new nationwide survey conducted by Perrigo Nutritionals in conjunction with SERMO, the largest online network of health care professionals.

Infant feeding options While the American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts agree on the

benefits of breastfeeding, they also agree that infant formula is a safe, sciencesupported, nutritious means to nourish babies.

It comes as no surprise, then, that pediatricians answer many questions about formula, especially since some mothers face challenges when breastfeeding. In fact, 58 percent of pediatricians say new moms are unsure what brand of formula to buy if they choose to switch or supplement.

Understanding the fundamentals of infant formula can help inform mom’s decision.

Infant formula Most parents don’t know that the FDA strictly regulates formula to keep babies safe, so store-brand formulas, such as Walmart’s Parent’s Choice Formula, are nutritionally comparable to and meet the same FDA standards as advertised national brands like Enfamil and Similac.

“Patients often come to me with questions regarding feeding and infant formula equivalency,” says Dr. Lisa Thornton, board certified pediatrician and child expert. “I always assure moms and dads alike that store brand infant formulas are a safe and science-supported alternative to breast feeding and are nutritionally comparable to name brand formula. They also offer great savings and every penny matters when you have a new baby.”

SOL PEARLMAN and his ZEST FOR LIFE

Friendly Sol Pearlman knows a good deal when he sees it whether, buying and restoring antique Indian motorcycles, getting tickets for the theater, or spending time with his family traveling to Cape Cod. Now Sol can enjoy life even more, after having successful eye surgery done by Board Certified Ophthalmologist Dr. Stanley Braverman of Hallandale Beach.

When Sol was a youngster growing up in Brooklyn, New York, he was playing in the street with a ball that bounced into a storm drain on the curb. Eagerly, he tried to retrieve the ball with a wire hanger. Regrettably, the hanger poked the child in the left eye which affected the pupil, cornea and optic nerve. His mother took the child immediately to the hospital where a doctor patched him up, but the eye, to his family’s dismay, would not work normally.

“From the age of six, my left eye was partially closed and I only saw shadows. As a result, I became bored reading, cut classes and had trouble paying attention.

I did not excel in school as

my brothers and sister did and I turned out to be the black sheep of my family. As I became older, I did my best and worked in management and eventually found satisfying work as a caregiver,” Sol said.

During an annual eye exam with optometrist Dr. Norman Hershkovich in Fort Lauderdale, Sol asked the doctor about his eye trauma from childhood.

“The doctor said he knows of an ophthalmologist who might be able to help me. At first, I thought the doctor was kidding because fifteen doctors previously said nothing could be done with my one eye and to just leave it alone.”

Sol followed up and made an appointment with Dr. Stanley Braverman. After a thorough eye examination and evaluation, Dr. Braverman determined that the injury had caused a corneal laceration and Sol had severe corneal astigmatism because of the injury. Sol also had cataracts in both eyes. Dr Braverman explained that by removing the cataract and by implanting a Toric Lens for astigmatism in his left eye, as well as by doing additional astigmatism correcting incisions in the

cornea, this would be able to improve the vision in his eye as well as correct the severe astigmatism from the childhood injury. “When I heard this, it was an emotional moment for me because I’ve been looking at life through one eye since I was six years old.”

“It’s been more than a year since I had the successful cataract operation in both eyes.

My left eye has the Toric Lens implant for my astigmatism and sees 20/30 without any corrective lenses and 20/20 with a mild prescription; and my right eye has the Tecnis Multifocal lens implant and sees 20/20 without any corrective lenses. I can read the smallest print on anything with no reading glasses and now have 20/20 vision even at night. Now when I pick up a book, I can read and enjoy reading and don’t have to use glasses.”

Sol said, “I saw fifteen doctors and Dr. Braverman was the only one to say ‘yes.’ He is a real people person without an attitude. Having the surgery was definitely worth the money and I would do it again!

Dr. Braverman made the comment that “it is the best

feeling in the entire world to be able to help people to this degree. Over the last twenty years, I have seen incredible changes in all of our surgical procedures.

Our surgical technology has moved forward by leaps and bounds. We can do things today that I would not have dreamt that we would have been able to do twenty years ago.”

WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts

also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient.

Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery.

Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper(the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours.

Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. After the surgery, eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. What’s your path to retirement happiness?

(BPT) - Retirees have a message for people still working but wondering what life might be like once they retire: “Come on in, the water’s warm.” But they also say that it pays to plan, the earlier the better, because retirement might come sooner than you expect.

A recent study, sponsored by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), found that approximately eight in 10 retirees are enjoying themselves in retirement, seven in 10 can afford a comfortable lifestyle, and two-thirds feel financially secure. The survey also indicated that few retirees characterize themselves as being bored, lonely or anxious, and nearly half (45 percent) retired sooner than they expected.

The study, Hopes, Fears and Reality What Workers Expect in Retirement and What Steps Help Them Achieve the Retirement They Want, polled more than 900 retirees one to 15 years into retirement and another 900 plus pre-retirees one to 15 years before retirement, all of whom had at least $50,000 in savings and investments.

The research paints a positive picture of retiree lifestyles and adaptability. More

importantly, it provides insights into the most important steps to take in preparing for a happy retirement.

“The study provides Americans with a roadmap for enjoying a happy, secure and fulfilling retirement,” says Elaine Sarsynski, executive vice president of MassMutual Retirement Services. “There was a clear distinction between what steps the happiest retirees took compared to those who were less fulfilled.”

Among the steps taken by the happiest retirees were the following: • Calculated the best time to begin collecting Social Security benefits. The qualifying age for receiving full benefits is gradually moving to age 67, depending on your birthdate. The benefit is reduced for those who take it sooner. For those who wait, the benefit increases each year until age 70.

• Targeted how much money they would need to retire comfortably and estimated their medical and dental expenses in retirement. It was a prudent step as many people said their medical and den-

tal expenses were higher in retirement than anticipated.

• Created a budget for their retirement income and expenses and made an effort to increase their savings at least five years before stopping work. The 2015 contribution limit for 401(k) plans and other employer-sponsored retirement plans is $18,000 plus an additional $6,000 for employees age 50 and older.

• Worked with a financial advisor. The overwhelming majority found their advisor to be helpful in preparing for retirement.

• Made new friends and/or reconnected with old friends before retiring.

While it’s important for everyone to have a social network, it’s especially important for retirees.

• Focused on strengthening the relationship with their spouse or significant other. In many instances, pre-retirees find they need to re-establish their relation-

ship with their significant other when children leave the nest.

• Developed a new hobby or cultivated new interests to make life more fulfilling.

“Whether retirement came as planned, late or early, the majority of today’s retirees will tell you that a happy, comfortable and secure retirement is an attainable goal,” Sarsynski says. “With common sense and planning, all of us can aspire to a fulfilling retirement reality.”

Flowers, chocolates, dinner, perfume and cologne. It’s the same gift every year. We have been trained so much to follow the leader when it comes to this personal and romantic holiday. Valentine’s Day. The very thought of Feb. 14 puts both men and women into a frenzy when thinking of that unique gift for that someone special who is the one and only in your life.

Every year, the intentions are good when you tell yourself that I am not going to buy the same thing again.

But when that day emerges, your grand ideas to make it different this year goes out the window - and while you make that promise to yourself - flowers, candy and perfume end up being the gifts to give.

This year, Valentine’s Day is going to be different, and as you ride through the streets of south Florida over the next week, you will have the chance to break the giftgiving cycle.

Instead of the usual, this year you will give the unusual and make this holiday, if only for this year, something to remember.

While you will still give flowers (for the women), that box of chocolates and some favorite that men receive, this year, we will add something additional. Instead of going out to a fancy restaurant and being with people that you really don’t care about, you are going to prepare the best meal possible - with romantic music playing throughout the evening. Are you ready to spend a night that you can brag to your friends and relatives?

Okay, it’s corny, but sometimes we have to plug into our romantic side, and this is the perfect way to do it.

Okay, here we go.

GREAT MEAL - TOO! While you opened those cards, ripped open that box of chocolates and tried on that new dress shirt and tie it’s time to turn the day up a few notches with a homecooked meal.

While it doesn’t have to be romantic, it can be a favorite dish that makes it a very thoughtful and, well, romantic.

1. Preheat the oven to 400°. In a medium skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil until shimmering. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. Add the lamb to the skillet, fat side down, and cook over moderately high heat until richly browned, about 3 minutes. Turn the lamb fat side up and cook for 2 minutes longer. Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast the rack for about 20 minutes, until an instantread thermometer inserted in the center of the meat registers 125° for medium-rare. Transfer the lamb to a carving board and let rest for 10 minutes.

Discard the fat in the skillet. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons of oil and the shallots to the skillet and cook over moderate heat until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the wine and simmer until reduced by half, about 2 minutes.

Add the stock and bring to a simmer. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the whole grain and Dijon mustards and the thyme. Season the sauce with salt and pepper.

Carve the lamb into chops and arrange on warmed plates. Spoon the sauce over the lamb and serve.

Potatoes Baked in Cream 4 potatoes, boiled 1/2 cups cream 1/2 tablespoons of salt & pepper to taste, some fresh coriander, finely chopped (optional) 6 tablespoons grated cheese Cool the potatoes, and peel them. Make thick slices.

Beat the cream slightly, and mix it with salt, pepper, and coriander. Lightly grease a baking dish with a tablespoon of oil. Rub it all over the base. Put 1/3 of the potatoes into the dish. Put 1/3 of the cream over, and then add 2 tablespoons of the cheese. Repeat the layers, ending with cheese. When you are ready to eat and/or serve, preheat the oven to 180˚ C. Bake the potatoes for about 20 minutes, or till the top is nicely browned.

(BPT) - If you’re feeling overworked and finding it a challenge to juggle the demands of your job and the rest of your life, then you’re not alone.

Achieving the elusive work-life balance may be getting harder with today’s connected lifestyle, but it is still possible.

A better work-life balance doesn’t just happen overnight.

It requires a lot of patience, careful thinking and attention toward understanding what is most important to you and your family. First you must focus on prioritizing your personal and professional life. Consider all the things that compete for your time.

Then decide what to keep and what to discard. Think of it as streamlining your priorities, sorted by the activities that are the most important.

“No matter how hard you try, you can’t squeeze more hours into your day,” says Dr. Nancy Aragon, professor of industrial organizational psychology at Argosy University, Online Programs. “What you can do though is make more efficient use of your time. It takes persistent planning to get a management system started, but keeping a time diary helps you to become more aware of where your time is being spent.”

Aragon recommends a weekly block schedule coupled with a daily to-do list.

The block schedule should be a fairly permanent, regular weekly plan that allows adequate time for necessary, recurring activities such as cooking, exercising, homework, grocery shopping, work, etc. A critical element to include in the block schedule is “flexible time” or free time that is purposely built into your schedule.

Scheduling flexible time is a way to account for unexpected, but inevitable events to be worked into your life with minimal disruption to your regular routine. In effect, you plan for the unexpected.

And although technology has the potential to improve the quality and efficiency of your daily life, it also has the potential to encroach on your work-life balance. “Set boundaries when it comes to technology,” says Aragon. “Schedule time for you and your family when it comes to accepting calls, texts, or emails.

Make sure everyone is on the same page in terms of what acceptable technology use is, and what crosses the line into technology abuse.” In other words, technology

doesn’t have to be eliminated, but its use does need to be purposefully managed and monitored.

Also keep in mind the power of attitude. Learn to monitor your attitude and its impact on your work performance, relationships and everyone around you. A positive attitude can make a big difference in your energy, your focus and your pace toward achieving balance. You can’t always change your circumstances, but you certainly can change how you react to them.

In addition, do not try to live up to other’s expectations. “Work-life balance is a very personal matter. If you seek to find your own balance by emulating the ideals, priorities and expectations of others, you are doomed to miss the mark,” adds Aragon. “It can require some courage to live by your own values and ideals rather than what seems to be the prevailing social norm, but the payoff is worth taking that venture out of your normative comfort zone.” This is an important truth to keep in mind for not only improving your work-life balance, but also finding success.

In the end, you need to find the right balance that works for you. Celebrate your successes and don’t dwell on your failures. Life is a process, and so is striving for balance in your life.

(BPT) - Driving your newborn home from the hospital is when you know your life has changed.

Car safety before kids is relatively simple, but after your first child is born, it becomes more complicated, especially when it comes to proper car seat installation.

More than 50 percent of new fathers and 40 percent of new mothers expressed concern over mastering the proper car seat installation as one of their top fears when bringing home a newborn from the hospital, according to research from Cars.com and Toluna QuickSurveys.

Since the majority of newborns spend multiple hours in the car, knowing how to properly install a car seat is essential, and all too often done incorrectly.

Seventy-five percent of children ride in car seats that aren’t properly installed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although car

seats (and the children in them) are all unique, Cars.com editor and expert mom Jennifer Newman offers these simple steps that are generally applicable to most car seat installations: • Once you purchase a car seat, perform a car seat check in your own vehicle to see if your new car seat and car are compatible. Some stores will even let you try it out in your car before you buy.

• Make sure you’re using a car seat that meets the latest federal safety requirements and the height and weight of your child.

• Read both the car seat’s owner’s manual and your car’s owner’s manual to make sure you’re following the recommendations regarding installation.

• Locate your local child car seat inspection station, offered throughout the country to teach parents, both new and experienced, how to properly install

any car seat.

• Car seats can be installed with either the latch system - the lower latch and tether anchors often found in the backseat - or with the seat belt. Use whichever is easier for you but never use both at the same time - this setup hasn’t been crash-tested and it could put too much stress on the car seat.

• After connecting the seat, using either method, make sure to push down on the seat as you tighten the latch straps or seat belt. The seat shouldn’t move more than an inch at the belt path.

• Register your car seat with the manufacturer and sign up for recall emails to ensure your child is not riding in a defective car seat.

In the Native American Culture, the totem and the spirit it embodies, represents the bond of unity within a tribe or clan. Antonin Dvorák Totems was heavily influenced by the music of Native Americans and the Symphony of the Americas, inspiring him to perform an all Dvorák Concert. Yehuda Hanani will join the Symphony in presenting Dvorák’s only Cello Concerto.

Hanani was brought to the United States by Leonard Bernstein and Issac Stern at the age of 19. He studied with Leonard Rose at Juilliard School of Music. Yehuda Hanani has won wide international acclaim. His solo appearances have been with many Symphony Orchestras in the US and Europe, including the Israel Philharmonic and Jerusalem Symphony. His recording of the monumental “Alkan Cello Sonata, received a grand Prix du Disque nomination. He is now Professor of Cello at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Allow butter, eggs, and buttermilk to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, grease three 8x1-1/ 2-inch or 9x1-1/2-inch round baking pans; line with waxed paper. Grease waxed paper. Lightly dust each pan with a little cocoa powder. Or, grease one 10inch fluted tube pan; coat lightly with cocoa powder. Set pan(s) aside. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Gradually add granulated and brown sugar, about 1/4 cup at a time, beating on medium speed till well combined (3 to 4 minutes).

Scrape sides of bowl. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating after each addition (about 1 minute total). Beat in cooled chocolate and vanilla.

Alternately add flour mixture and

buttermilk to butter mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just till combined. Beat on medium to high speed for 20 seconds more. (Batter will be thick.) Evenly divide batter among prepared pan(s), spread evenly.

Bake in a 350˚ degree F oven for 30 to 35 minutes for 8-inch pans, 25 to 30 minutes for the 9-inch pans, and 55 minutes for fluted tube pan or till a wooden toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool cake layers in pans for 10 minutes or fluted tube pan for 15 minutes on wire rack(s). Using a narrow metal spatula, loosen sides of layers from pans, then invert cakes onto the racks.

Remove waxed paper. Or, loosen cake from fluted tube pan and invert onto cooling rack. Cool cake(s) completely.

Layer cakes may dip slightly in center.

Meanwhile, prepare Chocolate-Sour Cream Frosting. (Omit filling and make a half recipe of the frosting if using tube pan). For the cake filling, in a medium bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups of the frosting and milk chocolate pieces or peanut butter flavor pieces. Set aside.

To assemble cake, place 1 cake layer, upside down, on a serving plate. Using an icing spatula or a wide knife, evenly spread half of the cake filling on the top of this layer. Top with second layer, upside down. Evenly spread remaining cake filling on top. Top with the third layer, right side up. Frost the sides and top with remaining Chocolate-Sour Cream Frosting. Or for the tube pan, spread frosting over the outside of the cake. Serve or store, covered, in the refrigerator.

To serve, garnish cake with Chocolate Hearts or rose petals, if you like. Makes 12 to 16 servings.

(BPT) - Liver cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in the world, causing more than 600,000 deaths each year. The number of Americans with liver cancer has been slowly but steadily rising for several decades with over 33,000 people expected to be diagnosed in 2014. The incidence is increasing due to the silent epidemic of Hepatitis B and C, the rise in the number of people with morbid obesity and Diabetes, and the persistence of alcoholic cirrhosis - all of which are risk factors for the disease. Although the U.S. blood supply is screened for Hepatitis B and C viruses, and an effective vaccine against Hepatitis B is available along with new treatment options for Hepatitis C, liver cancer rates continue to rise.

One reason is that, although the number of new Hepatitis C infections has dropped over the last two decades, approximately 3.2 million Americans are currently infected with chronic Hepatitis C, with most unaware of their infection. About 5 percent of those patients will develop liver cancer over a 10- to 30-year period. Because of that delay, many of the Liver Cancer cases being diagnosed today are in individuals infected with chronic Hepatitis C as early as the 1970s.

Symptoms of Liver Cancer include loss of appetite, weight loss, feeling of fullness, nausea or vomiting, pain in the abdomen or near the right shoulder blade, and yellowing of the skin. Unfortunately, symptoms often do not appear until the disease is an advanced stage, which is why regular screening and surveillance are critically important for patients living with Liver Disease. Regular checkups in those without risk factors are also important as anyone can develop Liver Cancer.

“Patients often do not experience symptoms of liver cancer until it’s already progressed to an advanced stage so it’s important for those at risk to be screened,” says Dr. Ghassan Abou-Alfa, Medical Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, chair of the Hepatobiliary Task Force of the National Cancer Institute, and a member of the American Liver Foundation’s National Medical Advisory Committee.

(BPT) - Comfort foods remind us of home, warmth and family; they are often the creamy, rich and heavy everyday foods we had as children.

Things like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and fried chicken may be soothing to the soul, but not to the waistline.

“I happened to like my comfort foods just the way they are,” jokes chef instructor Terra Ciotta of The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charlotte, a campus of South University. “But this time of year, many are making more mindful and healthier choices.”

If you’re trying to reduce the after holiday bulge, follow chef Ciotta’s equation of substitution equals reduction. For mashed potatoes, Ciotta purees steamed cauliflower, makes half the portion of her freshly mashed potatoes and folds the cauliflower puree into the mashed potatoes. For hearty spaghetti with meatballs, Ciotta reduces the ground beef portion and adds finely chopped sauteed mushrooms.

“If you really want to make your recipes healthier, try to make simple

modifications that won’t change the end product too drastically,” says chef Leslie Eckert of The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham, a campus of South University. “Otherwise, you won’t achieve the comfort in comfort food.”

Here are tips and simple guidelines chefs Eckert and Ciotta recommend.

• Choose whole grains over refined: brown rice, whole grain bread, whole grain pasta instead of white rice, white bread or standard pasta. Whole grains digest more slowly.

• Use small amounts of olive oil instead of butter on grains or vegetables and to saute. A non-aerosol spray bottle can help use oil sparingly.

• Choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products: skim or 1 percent milk, lowfat or fat-free yogurts, sour cream and cheeses - and reduce the amount.

• Choose Canadian bacon or lean ham over bacon, wild-caught, fresh or water-packed tuna or salmon over oilpacked tuna or salmon, chicken and turkey sausage over pork sausage and lean ground turkey and beef over high-fat options.

• Use herbs, flavored powders (like garlic powder), citrus (like lemon juice) and heat (like red pepper or hot sauces) over extra salt.

• Instead of frying, bake, roast or grill using a rub or marinade.

• Use fresh or frozen vegetables over canned. Remember that frozen vegetables are harvested at peak season and usually flash-frozen.

• Remember - using low-fat or fatfree dairy products, olive oil, whole grains or lean meats doesn’t mean unlimited portions.

According to chef Eckert, high-fat, high-sugar foods - such as comfort foods - illicit “feel good” hormones quicker than a plate of raw vegetables.

To make your holidays healthier, you can always add vegetables to a hearty dish. Chef Ciotta cites one of her favorites as creamy risotto with broccoli. You’re still getting the hearty dish, but at the very least, you’re adding something healthy with fiber.

Many experts say that you don’t have to give up your comforting favorites in order avoid weight gain. It just takes planning and portion control, and substitution of course.

More than just annoying: The link between snoring and heart disease (BPT) - Snoring isn’t pleasant for anyone - not the partner who has to sleep beside the snorer, nor the snorer whose breathing may pause repeatedly throughout the night. But did you know that loud, excessive snoring is often a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that if left untreated - can cause you to be five times more likely to die from heart disease?

Along with good nutrition and regular exercise, healthy sleep is essential for a healthy heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S, so treating sleep apnea is good for your sleep and your heart.

According to the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project, obstructive sleep apnea is a chronic disease that afflicts at least 25 million U.S. adults.

“Obstructive sleep apnea is destroying the health of millions of Americans, and the problem has only gotten worse over the last two decades,” says Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a national spokesperson for the Healthy Sleep Project. The project is a collaboration between the AASM, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Sleep Research Society and other partners.

Sleep apnea involves repetitive pauses in breathing during sleep, which can put an enormous strain on the heart. Severe sleep apnea can reduce the amount of oxygen in your blood and cause dangerous surges in your

blood pressure. This stress triggers your body to respond in ways that may promote heart disease.

Sleep apnea may be far more common than you think.

Between 30 percent and 40 percent of adults with high blood pressure also have sleep apnea. The rate of sleep apnea soars to 80 percent among people with high blood pressure that do not respond to treatment with medications. Research even shows that sleep apnea can affect the shape, size and performance of your heart.

“The good news is that detecting and treating sleep apnea can improve your heart health and other clinical outcomes,” Morgenthaler says.

The primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure therapy. CPAP therapy keeps your airway open by providing a stream of air through a mask that you wear during sleep. Treating sleep apnea with CPAP therapy improves blood pressure control and reduces the risk of heart disease. It can even reverse the changes to the shape and size of the heart that can be caused by sleep apnea.

Treat A Skin Tear With Respect

As we age and lose collagen in the subdermal layers of our skin, we notice how the skin’s outer layer becomes crepelike and tears easily when brushing against a sharp edge. This was the recent case with a patient of mine, who had experienced a skin tear in a rehab just before I met her. Through lack of proper treatment at the rehab and minimal wound care ordered at home, her healing and circulation became compromised.

When I became aware of her pain ten days later, and saw the state of her wound for the first time, I referred her to Dr. Charlton Adler, wound care specialist at both Aventura Hospital and the Memorial System, and accompanied her to her appointment.

Dr. Adler pointed out how the edges of the skin tear had rolled under and new subdermal tissue was beginning to fill in the small cavity left by the tear and showed signs of entrapping the borders of the tear by growing over it. After anesthetizing the site, he gently began softening and restretching the rolled over skin, debrided the new dermal tissue that would have been excess, and surgically

placed the original skin flap over its natural area. He secured the flap with steristrips, covered with Tagaderm and left everything in place for a week to heal undisturbed.

“It’s such a shame,” said Dr. Adler, “If the skin flap would have been placed on its site in the very beginning, the patient would not have been subjected to this pain, and it would have healed by now.”

Wounds, even as superficial as a skin tear, should get professional attention when it comes to the elderly or with diabetics who heal poorly. The body’s healing capacity slows down with age and is complicated with diabetes. A simple skin tear can become infected or compromise circulation, as it did with this patient.

Wounds should be cleaned and treated with an antiinfective cream or spray and covered to avoid contamination.

Dressings should be changed daily unless specialty stay-in-place products are used after aseptic conditions are employed.

Busting first-time homebuyer myths (BPT) - When buying a first home, most people are making one of the biggest purchases of their lives. Without home buying experience, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction.

“Buying a first home can be exciting and stressful for most young buyers, especially the financing process,” says Clete Thompson, Vice President at imortgage, a division of loanDepot LLC. “There’s a lot of paperwork, many choices, and sometimes budgets don’t stretch very far. Our licensed loan officers specialize in helping first-time buyers navigate the home finance process, which can be stressful if you’re not working with a seasoned professional.”

To help first-time buyers, the experts at imortgage are uncovering prevalent myths about financing a home purchase: Myth: It takes a 20 percent down payment to buy a home.

Reality: Required down payment amounts vary by type of loan and they are on average much smaller than people think. Last year, the median down

payment for all first-time buyers was 6 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors. One reason is that many first-time buyers use FHA loans, which require down payments as low as 3 to 3.5 percent. VA loans require nothing down for qualified veterans or active military personnel. If you want to take out a conventional loan, many lenders do require 20 percent down, but you can lower that percentage with private mortgage insurance. There are also hundreds of down payment assistance programs that eliminate or reduce down payment requirements for qualified borrowers.

Myth: If you owe a lot of student loan debt, there is no way you can get a mortgage.

Reality: Don’t assume that having a lot of student loan debt automatically disqualifies you from getting a mortgage.

The key factor is not necessarily the size of your loan obligation, but the amount of your total monthly debt payments compared to your monthly income. This is called DTI. imortgage, for example, has approved thousands of loans to first-time buyers whose monthly student loan

payments were as high as $300, and many more could qualify by increasing their monthly income.

Myth: If your credit score is low, you should not even try to get a mortgage.

Reality: Millions of potential buyers assume they will not be approved for a mortgage even though many could qualify, according to a national survey commissioned by loanDepot LLC. Today, median FICO scores for mortgages to buy a home are 683 for FHA loans and 754 for conventional loans. But hundreds of thousands of buyers with scores lower than those are getting mortgages if they have good income and low levels of debt.

Myth: Buying a home isn’t a good investment.

Reality: Real Estate, like other assets, rises and falls based on supply and demand. Over the past two years, home values in most markets have been rising.

While all Real Estate is local, if you bought a home in March 2012, by August 2014 the national median home price as measured by Case-Shiller had risen 29.6 percent.

Myth: The mortgage-interest tax deduction is going away.

Reality: Though the deduction has its critics, most observers believe it is unlikely that Congress will eliminate the mortgage interest deduction any time soon.

Many states also allow homeowners to write off the interest they pay on their mortgages from their state income taxes. Check with your accountant or CPA on if you can qualify for this type of tax deduction.

Myth: I’m about to get married and the wedding is so expensive I won’t be able to buy a home.

Reality: According to TheKnot, the average wedding has 138 guests who typically give a gift valued at $100 each.

That’s $13,800 in spatulas, baking pans and other things. If every guest contributed to a Down Payment Fund, you could have enough saved for a down payment on a $276,000 home in San Diego.

“These are just a few of the myths about home buying that surface frequently in our conversations with firsttime buyers,” says Thompson. “I always advise potential buyers, especially firsttime buyers, to get in touch with one of our local imortgage loan officers if they’re interested in straight answers to specific questions about financing a home. Ambient lighting: Ambient lighting is the main source of illumination and is fundamental to a solid bathroom lighting plan. Recessed lights, wall-mounted fixtures and small chandeliers have become popular options for bathroom ambient lighting.

Many people choose to install dimmers for the main source of lighting so they can adjust the illumination depending on what they are doing; brighter is used for quick showers and softer lighting is used for soaking in the tub.

Task lighting: Task lighting is absolutely necessary for daily grooming activities like putting on makeup and shaving. Typically located by the mirrors, quality task lighting is free of glare and shadows, and it will never strain the eyes.
