The secret to Mother’s Day gifting success: Give time, not stuff (BPT) - She nursed you through countless cases of childhood sniffles, taught you to tie your shoes and make a mean omelet, and she’s still your go-to source for good advice and your favorite home-baked cookies. Are you really going to just give Mom a pair of socks and some flowers for Mother’s Day? You can do better than that.
In the tradition of a current pop-culture meme, here’s a “give this, not that” list of Mother’s Day ideas: Give: Your time. Last year, 44 percent of mothers surveyed by online deal site PriceGrabber said they wanted quality time with their family for Mother’s Day. Whether your family includes adult children who live and work far from their childhood home (and Mom) or a busy family with young children, it can be hard to find time to spend with each other on a regular basis. On Mother’s Day, make
a point of devoting the day to Mom. Whatever you choose to do together - dine out, visit a botanical garden or just hang out at home - you’ll be giving her the gift she wants most: time with you. Don’t give: Stuff. There’s a difference between a thoughtful gift that has meaning to the recipient, and something clearly bought out of desperation just so the giver has something to hand over on Mother’s Day. Moms know the difference. Things like cowboy boots, sunglasses and even designer purses were among the items mothers said they didn’t want in a survey by Ebates. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy something she may not want. Put some thought into the gift a week or two before the big day so you can be sure you’re giving her something she really wants, like a piece of unique jewelry, her favorite bath products, or an attractive scarf. Moms are more than just the sum of the time they spend in the kitchen. If she really needs and wants those things, why not give them to her at some other time of year, for no other reason than she’s a great mother? Or, if you must give something kitchen-related for Mother’s Day, consider something that’s pretty and fun, too, like decorative serveware. Buy from a store that offers free gift wrapping services - like Cracker Barrel - and it’s even easier to give a good-looking gift. Give: Gift cards. A gift card to her favorite store was another popular selection of moms surveyed by Ebates. But don’t think
giving her a gift card is all you have to do. Research to find just the right card for her, and then offer to accompany her on a shopping excursion to her favorite store. That way, you’ll be giving her two things she wants most - a gift card and time spent with you. Don’t give: Technology. Do you really want to give Mom a smartphone that will be obsolete by next Mother’s Day? Or a tablet so complicated she’ll never figure out how to use it on her own? If your mother’s digitally inclined, chances are she already has the tech she needs and wants. And if she doesn’t, trying to choose it for her can be like trying to pick a pet for someone else - never a good idea. Instead, keep gift items simple, personal and nostalgic. It is never too late to enjoy life! At the age of 99, Irving Sirotkin is seeing better than ever thanks to Dr. Stanley Braverman

When Irving Sirotkin had trouble watching his 60 inch television and seeing the numbers on his new I-Phone 6 Plus earlier this year, he began to worry. With his eyesight already suffering from macular degeneration (“legally blind”) in his right eye, which required cataract surgery back in 2005, this vibrant and busy Hallandale Beach resident was now having trouble with his left eye, and that was alarming. Having spent most of his life, working in the dry cleaning and plastics business in his native New York, Sirotkin had worn glasses since the age of 8, depending on his eyes to see things such as hard to remove stains. While that is nothing new to most, this story doesn’t end there. Proving it’s never too late to worry about seeing clearly, and those little things that many take for granted, Sirotkin is indeed not your average patient. This September, he will turn 100! Sirotkin’s life has been one that truly defines the zest for living and taking full advantage of having the best of all worlds. Moving to south Florida back in 1986, he spent six years commuting back and forth to New York - every weekend. That stopped back in 1992. His wife had fallen in love with everything about South Florida, and while it became tedious to travel back and forth, he did to keep everyone happy. This Army veteran had always battled poor eye sight, but when things began to go downhill in 2005, he discovered Dr. Stanley Braverman, and that’s where things began to change. “I remember attending a seminar that Dr. Braverman had been a part of some 25 years ago when he first started,” Sirotkin recalled. “That was something that really changed my life.” While the sight in his right eye had deteriorated, Sirotkin underwent his first surgery, which helped him continue to live a more productive life. Over the next 10 years, things began to get worse in his left eye, and that’s when he and Dr. Braverman decided that another cataract surgery was needed. It had gotten to the point where his nurse, Stephanie Grobstein, noticed that he was having trouble seeing anything at all. That included the little things that many of us take for granted. “We would sit in front of that large TV and he really couldn’t see very well at all,” Grobstein said. “Having been with him for
10 years and watching how he so much enjoyed life, the procedure was really something that he had to get done.” Because he has maintained a friendship with Dr. Braverman and the staff at Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach through the years, the January surgery was another life changer for a man who has experienced so much over the past 99 years. Remember, this is someone who walks a half hour every day, reads and watches a lot of TV. “The funny thing about the surgery is that when Irving had it done and came home, he looked at my face and said, I can see you,” Grobstein laughed. “He also was extremely happy to once again watch his TV.” The cataract surgery has made a difference, and while turning 100 later this year is important, it’s not as vital as being able to see and living a quality life. That was taken care of a few months ago. Sirotkin’s doctor/patient relationship with Dr. Braverman has been important to him. Having someone you can trust with your life has been one less thing to worry about. “I cannot say enough about Dr. Braverman and his great staff,” Sirotkin said. “They have made every visit an experience to remember, and I believe everyone of his patients feel the same way.” No matter if you are 49 or 99, it is indeed never too late to enjoy life, and that is what Irving Sirotkin tells everyone who will listen! What Are Cataracts A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions

The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range. Cataract Surgery: What To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the
removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. If your eye qualifies, the second option, Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery can now be done using state of the art Femtosecond Laser technology to assist with parts of the cataract surgical procedure, including softening up the cloudy camera lens. This reduces the amount of high frequency ultrasound needed. Laser assisted cataract surgery takes a delicate procedure and refines it even more, so that the surgical precision is unparalleled. The computer-guided accuracy of the laser complements your doctor’s skills with today’s latest techneology. An artificial man made lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. There are several types of high quality premium vision lenses that can be used, giving you potentially better results than

This one is the most frequently asked questions I am asked: Why should I go through an agency when I can hire my own aide and pay less per hour? Remember the age-old adage “You get what you pay for”? You may pay less for your aide hourly, but when you hire independently, do you really know what you are getting yourself into? These are just a few of the complaints that I have heard from patients who contacted us: • Things seem to disappear too often • She didn’t listen to what I wanted • She got so bossy that I felt like I was the employee • With her problems, I felt that I needed to help her with extra money • She kept coming late and leaving early • She was on her cell phone all the time • She was nervous driving to unfamiliar addresses, even to the doctor • She did not cook the way I like and would not listen to my suggestions • She didn’t buy the brands or cuts of meat that I wanted • She didn’t dress appropriately and when we went out, I was embarassed. With our agency, as with any other legitimate agency, we do not stand for any complaints, NOT ANY.

Many people are unaware of their responsibility to the IRS when hiring a household employee, or of the aide’s legitimate status to work in the US. Our aides are our employees and we report their earnings and our share to the IRS. Protect yourself by preventing problems. An agency is your safest way to go. Even the home health aides know that, and although they accept statewide standard rates that may be lower than what they could get from the client privately, reputable aides know that by working through reputable agencies, they also are protected and can be steadily employed with respect. Okay, so you are looking at the calendar and notice that we have moved into April - with May quickly approaching. Did you make plans for the summer, yet? While the news that we are heading into the summer shouldn’t be a surprise since we had hardly any winter at all this year, it is indeed time to start thinking who will be where this summer. It’s time to get ready for June, July and August and even now, the first three weeks of September - so planning is essential. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus By Marylynne Newmark, Medical Writer
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle. Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage. Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.
“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.” Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process. “I have already witnessed many suc-
cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds. “I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

“Dancing with the Stars®*” Finalist Amy Purdy Shares Her Story to Help Protect Teens from Meningococcal Meningitis (BPT) World class snowboarder, Paralympic®** medalist and “Dancing with the Stars” finalist Amy Purdy and her mother, Sheri, have teamed up to launch Take Action Against Meningitis. The campaign encourages parents to take a pledge to talk to their healthcare providers about helping to protect their teens from meningococcal meningitis. One type of invasive meningococcal disease, meningococcal meningitis, is a bacterial infection, which causes inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. There are five common forms of the bacteria that cause meningococcal
disease -- A, C, Y, W and B. “Adolescents and young adults are the primary carriers of the meningococcal bacteria, meaning they may harbor the pathogen in the back of the throat, even if it does not cause them to get sick ,” said Dr. Richard Chung, Director of Adolescent Medicine at Duke University. “It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider for more information about meningococcal disease. There are vaccines available for serogroups A, C, W and Y, and now serogroup B.” Early symptoms of meningococcal meningitis can be misinterpreted as the flu. Invasive meningococcal disease can lead to death within 24 hours and, for those who survive, it can cause permanent disabilities. “I remember the day Amy called to tell me that she wasn’t feeling well,” said Sheri Purdy. “At the time, I didn’t think anything of it and thought it may be the flu. Living a longer healthy life is a joint venture between you, your family and your doctor. Prevention is the key. Regular checkups are critical. Lab studies and diagnostic tests reveal a lot, alerting the doctor to a developing problem that can be controlled at an early stage. When symptoms appear, the problem already has had an effect. Medications play their role. Although they are compounded with certain actions in mind, medications react differently with each patient. The doctor’s decision is based on symptoms, current medications being taken, other conditions, status of the heart and blood pressure, effects other systems, and general lifestyle of the patient. The doctor monitors them carefully and may try a different plan of treatment. I am a cardiologist, and when I prescribe for my patient, it is a careful balance of medications that are suited to the heart problem in conjunction with other medications that the patient is
taking. For example, medications for high blood pressure are not all the same. There are alpha blockers, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, etc. They all have a particular function in controlling the pressure it takes for blood to pump through the heart and then out to the body. Sometimes, we prescribe two or more at the same time. They need to be taken as directed since their interaction has a direct effect on your heart. Supplements. Even though they are over-the-counter, claim to be natural and require no prescription, does not mean that herbals, vitamins and minerals cannot effect your body or medications that you are already taking. As an example, Vitamins A, C and E have anti-coagulant qualities. If you are taking Warfarin, and possibly baby aspirin, think about how you may be intensifying the anticoagulant effects in your blood, putting you at risk for additional bleeding. If an herbal sleep aid helps with your insomnia, it is affecting a level of brain action, which is a chemical reaction. Advise your doctor
of the supplements you are considering or already taking. Diet and hydration. When advised to limit salt, sugar, white flour and fried foods, take that seriously. Taking medication to stabilize your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol is a wake-up call, not a license to continue bad habits. A sufficient amount of fluids, particularly water, provides volume in the blood for proper distribution of oxygen through your red blood cells. It is necessary for digestion and elimination, and provides general hydration throughout your system. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrating. Patient’s role. It is very important for patients to take all medications as directed and for the entire time prescribed. many patients will stop taking their antibiotic when they feel better.
This is the worst thing to do, since your body is not entirely rid of the bacteria, and it can re-flourish and return with a vengeance, now resistant to that particular type of medication. Be sure to take medication with at least a half glass of water for quick delivery to the stomach, where it will begin to break up for proper digestion and absorption. Family support is equally important. However, with their concern for you and best intentions, their guidance and advice should be checked out with the doctor, and that includes all the supplements that they are quick to suggest. Start at the top. “The ceiling is the most overlooked design element in a space, hands down,” said Brian Patrick Flynn, whose interiors are regularly featured on HGTV.com and often showcased by his own company, FlynnsideOut Productions. Consider this: The largest solid surface in a room - besides the floor - is the ceiling. Instead of leaving it bright white or builder beige, convert this blank canvas into a decorative canopy of color and texture. Flynn and other influential designers are forecasting a ceiling “revival” in 2015. Fresh interpretations of vintage styles such as gleaming metal tiles and textural wood beams - are helping inspire that trend, along with new, easy-to-install products that put these ceiling projects well within the reach of today’s DIYers. “Just like people, rooms need different layers to be one-of-a kind,” Flynn said. “That includes a ceiling that makes people look up
and scan the entire space.” Here are some hot ceiling trends to take your rooms to new heights: • Layer on the luster. Stamped metal ceilings have contributed shine and sophistication to American homes since they were introduced in the 1880s. Besides beauty, metal ceilings offer practicality. They resist mold and mildew, offer sag resistance and last longer than plaster or drywall. Metallaire metal ceiling tiles from Armstrong are available in 12 patterns, and a variety of finishes, including chrome, copper, brass, white and lacquered steel. The lacquered steel panels also can be painted to accent or blend with the rest of the room. From rustic timber to sleek teak, wood hues help set the tone in a room. Besides imparting a sense of warmth, the grains and knots in wood panels add a textural layer that contrasts nicely with smooth surfaces like painted walls and granite countertops. • Add architectural depth. Coffered ceilings first appeared in Roman architecture, and their geometric elegance has graced grand buildings ever since. Today, the cost and complexity of building coffered ceilings have been reduced by lightweight materials and easy-toinstall prefabricated systems that boast features like mold, mildew and sag resistance. Flynn recommends homeowners start thinking about their ceiling by exploring websites for ideas.
